Wastewater network maintenance continues across the district

Following on from the cleaning and inspecting of underground wastewater pipes in Tuakau, Te Kauwhata and Huntly, contractors have moved on to areas in Ngaruawahia, Raglan and Meremere.

Cleaning the pipes will remove blockages caused by objects like nappies, pieces of cloth and wetwipes. These blockages can lead to wastewater spills, which is something Council is trying to avoid.

Once clean, the pipes can be inspected via Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras. The inspection provides valuable information about the condition of the pipes which helps Council plan what maintenance is needed.

Smoke testing is another tool Council is using to identify irregular connections to the wastewater network. Smoke is put into the network to see where smoke comes out. This identifies where the leaks are.

In wet weather these leaks provide a pathway for rainwater to get into the wastewater network.

Council’s contractors HydroTech are due to start the smoke testing in

Acting General Manager Service Delivery Jacki Remihana says this work forms an important part of a district-wide assessment into the condition of Council’s underground pipes.

“It is part of Council’s ongoing commitment to improving wastewater infrastructure so that we can minimise any wastewater overflows or leaks,” she says.

Residents who have cleaning, inspections and smoke testing in their area will receive letters before work starts.

For those who have cleaning and inspections, the letter will advise residents to keep toilet lids closed when not in use while contractors are working in their areas. It also recommends adding a weighted object to the top of the toilet lid while cleaning is being carried out in the rare event that it causes a surge in flow in the wastewater pipes.

If there are manholes or access chambers on private property, the owner will be contacted and arrangements will be made.

Council thanks these communities for their support of this important work.

Putting the brakes on at Te Uku

Bobo and Crowie are tired of watching near-misses and accidents along the Te Uku stretch of state highway.

e Uku residents not only think the main road is an accident waiting to happen, it is an accident that already has happened.

Crowhurst and Te Uku Roast Office coowner Bobo Ten Broek say they witness dozens of near misses daily and both know

of two deaths and many other accidents along the notorious busy strip into Raglan.

“A lady crashed here just the other day and smashed her face in,” Bo says.

The pair say there are several factors impacting on the safety of the stretch of highway, including speed, blind spots along the road, cars pulling in and out for petrol and coffee, and school runs to and from Te Uku School.

“One of the biggest issues here is NZTA is very hard to negotiate with,” Crowie says. “It will probably take somebody in an accident for it to be a priority.”

They believe the easiest and most cost affective fix to Te Uku’s road safety issues is to reduce the speed limit to 50k.

“You are not going to change people’s attitudes and to cover everybody, you need to make the situation safe,” Crowie says.

“For the price of some 50k signs and spraying some paint on the road, that’s it,” Bo says.

NZTA Waikato Transport System Manager Karen Boyt says there is support to review speed limits in some parts of SH23, but in other parts the community is divided.

Changing the speed limit requires following a legal process and Karen says input from the local community is important.

“We’re reviewing the speed limit along the entire route from Hamilton to Raglan.

This includes the section of road that runs through Te Uku. There is currently a 60km/h variable speed limit that operates at the school arrival and departure times,” she says.

“Meanwhile, we’re looking at other ways the road through Te Uku could be made safer. One option being considered is to put the power lines underground on the southern side of SH23 through Te Uku. This would provide space for the road to be widened to allow for a painted area in the middle of the road for turning vehicles.”

Although he has never considered selling, Graeme has offered his section on the corner of Okete Road and the state highway to Waitomo to try and address some of the issues caused by the location of the pumps. So far, he hasn’t heard back from them.

Waitomo has been in negotiations with NZTA and Te Uku store to remedy some of the issues caused by the pumps by resurfacing the area outside the pumps and adding another fuel storage tank to decrease the amount of tanker refills required.

eaver Marianne Aschenbrenner “fell in love” with Raglan 16 years ago – and though it was only a fleeting visit always held on to the hope that one day she’d live here.

That day came just over a month ago when, her work nannying for immediate family at an end after their decision to relocate, the 62 year old shifted down from Auckland and into a Cliff St cottage and studio she’d spied for rent in the Chronicle classifieds.

And Marianne – who admits to having been so excited by the move here that she “unpacked like a crazy woman” – certainly hasn’t wasted any time putting down roots.

Soon after shifting in she planted five flaxes from Auckland Botanic Gardens in the earth at her new water’s-edge home, and just four days later she was harvesting the plants for her first local workshop in flax weaving.

There have been some amazing ideas,

projects and initiatives in local communities proud to help get off the ground, not least of all in Raglan.

four hours anyone can be taught to harvest, prepare and weave flax into a small basket.

Marianne started weaving back in 2010 while living up north in Ruakaka – and reckons she “couldn’t stop”. Her master teacher was Elke Radewald who, coincidentally, dropped in at her market stall on Sunday.

For the past five years Marianne’s been based at Swanson in West Auckland where she’s sold her work at Titirangi Village Market. She has also exhibited at Arataki Visitor Centre in the Waitakere Ranges.

She says her passion for flax-weaving has taught her much about herself and Maori culture. And the art form itself is like therapy, she adds, because it concentrates the mind.

It goes hand in hand with her love of reiki – a healing technique through touch – in which Marianne is also trained. “It’s all about channelling the life force … the energy that’s so important when it comes to animals, plants and humans,” she says in a soft German accent.

“And through weaving I can feel that spiritual connection to plants.”

The Munich-born artist’s new studio is now overflowing with her hand-dyed flax work – kete, hats and intricately woven blooms, fairy wands and wall hangings.

The familiar smell of freshly woven flax helps make her feel at home.

Last Sunday’s monthly Raglan Creative Market at the Old School marked another milestone for Marianne in her first month here.

Although she missed the Raglan artists’ open studio weekend by a whisker at the end of January, she was organised enough by last weekend to showcase her work – for which she has a thriving online business under the name ‘Woven’ – at her own stall in Stewart Street.

Having a presence there also allowed Marianne to promote her weaving workshops, which she stresses support an age-old art that remains true to Maori cultural practices or tikanga.

She says that while not everyone is able to afford to buy weaving like hers, in just

communities, and Matty McLean from TVNZ One’s Breakfast show will be talking live with people at the breakfast to share with the rest of New Zealand a little bit about what happens with community groups in Raglan.

The Young Ones: An occasional column with youth in Raglan

his week we sat down with young local surfer Indi Ratima.

Tell us about your surfing comps this summer. How did you go?

So far this year I've entered the Mount Maunganui Grom comp and was placed second. There's a couple of comps coming up in the next few months that I'm really looking forward to, especially the ones held at home.

You were recently interviewed in Surfing NZ Magazine. Is it out yet?

The magazine will be out this month Surfing NZ photographer, Cory Scott, called me for a phone interview. We talked about my last Indonesia trip and my passion for big wave surfing.

When did you first start surfing?

I actually can't remember. It feels like I've been surfing all my life.

How did you learn and develop your surfing?

I was brought up in Raglan, surrounded by some of the best surfers in the country, and all my family, friends and teachers have been a huge influence on developing my surfing.

How did the RAS Surf Academy prepare you for comps?

It was amazing - best three years to date! Lazza and Dean are experienced contest surfers. They have a lot of knowledge to pass on to us students to help us be prepared for comps.

The teachers go above and beyond their normal duties as teachers and become friends. It's insane to think you have the chance to surf during school hours while getting an education. I've made some of my best friends through the academy who are from all over the country.

Do you have a goal with your competitive surfing?

It would be cool to win a national title and the Rip Curl Pro held at home.

Where is your favourite place to surf?

Definitely Indicators - there's no place like home!

Have you travelled overseas to surf?

Surfing has taken me to Indonesia, Australia, New Caledonia, Hawai’i and all through Europe.

I've been super blessed to be only 19 and have travelled to all these places and I'm looking forward to where else it takes me.

When did you decide to become a vet?

Apparently, I first said I wanted to be a vet when I was three years old, and that never changed!

Where did you study? What was involved?

I studied at Massey University, Palmerston North, which is currently the only Veterinary school in New Zealand. It is a five-year degree including a competitive selection semester in order to get in to vet school.

Did you come from a farm or a family who owned lots of pets?

I grew up on a 10-acre lifestyle block, so I was introduced to a wide variety of animals from an early age.

What do you find the most rewarding?

This is a very satisfying job.

There is a two-fold reward in being able to help animals, which in turn helps people. It is lovely to see a happy animal go home with a happy owner.

What is the most challenging aspect of your job?

just like us, so sometimes despite our best efforts things do not go according to plan, which can be very frustrating.

What does a typical day on the job look like?

Everyday is different in this career! You can never tell what is going to walk/waddle/hop through the door. There is always companion animal consults to be done (routine surgeries such as speys and neuters) and getting on farm to examine cattle and sheep.

What is it like working in the Whaingaroa area? Does it differ from other areas?

Raglan is a truly mixed area, which means we get to work with a variety of animals including companion animals, cattle, sheep and horses as well as the odd pig, alpaca and goat. It is also special because we get wildlife brought into the clinic and I have seen harriers, seabirds and even a seal pup!

What would you say to someone who has the goal of a veterinary career?

Do your homework to make sure it is a career that will really be want you want and then just persevere. There are different pathways you can follow once you become a vet, so there are always doors open for you.

She explained the 2001 Community Plan was being updated. Last year Focus groups were formed to deal with topics such as tourism, roading, well being, industry, youth etc., and they have been meeting over the last few months to see what improvements could be made in specific areas. There was lots of discussion and ideas from the Support Group, and one member who was on the committee 17 years ago gave us an insight into the challenges which faced the original plan.

We had a full house at the Senior Technology Group which meets every Thursday at 2pm. More and more older citizens are becoming competent in computer skills. While Jake dealt with more serious issues, the members helped each other to get connected.

us did not get our Census forms with the code to be of much help to those elderly people without access to the internet. Consequently, many are still waiting for hard copies so they could fill out the 2018 census by hand.

Easter is early this year and Good Friday is on March 30. Easter Sunday is on April Fools Day and the final day of Daylight Savings. So, if you turn up at the bowling club for the Crop Swap and no one is there, it’s not a joke, you have forgotten to turn back your clock!

Light exercise group celebrate 20 years of fun and fitness

fter 20 years in the fitness game, the Raglan Light Exercise Group has done many kilometres on the exercycles, treadmills and rowing machines.

Renee Doig, Virginia Gallagher and Barbara Iti have been attending

from the beginning when the classes were run out of the bowling club.

Renee says enjoying the company of her fellow workout buddies is an added bonus to the regular fitness sessions.

“We’re always joking and laughing.”

And although she won’t reveal her exact age, Renee says the hospital staff couldn’t believe she was over 80 when she was in for a hip replacement.

“The nurses couldn’t believe it when I lifted myself up. I’ve only got to this because of the exercise.”

“For those of us who have had to spend time in hospital our recovery has been a lot faster and it’s great for our basic fitness,” Virginia says.

Barbara fondly remembers taking IHC clients to the classes when they were in the bowling club and then in the church at Taipari Ave. “They would come to every session.”

Secretary/treasurer, Graham Hubert, says the group provides more than just exercise, and spending time in the company of others is great for older adults feeling isolated. They stay behind for a cuppa after Thursday’s workout to mix and mingle without the huff and puff.

“We are making a real difference in the community.”

Possibly one of the longest continuously running fitness groups in the Waikato, Graham says the group were formed under the guidance of Sports Waikato, Green Prescription, Raglan medical professionals and other interested parties in order to

cater for the health and wellbeing of older adults.

Graham says they are lucky to have Krishna Gotty as an instructor and the yoga tutor takes the time to cater for the individual needs of the group.

The session starts with half an hour on various machines and the last half hour with light weights and stretching bands.

Ranging in age from 50 to 80 plus, the group meet every Monday and Thursday from 10-11am at the St Peter’s Hall, Main Road, Raglan.

New members are always welcome.

Beach clean up finds plastic in abundance

round five cubic metres of rubbish collected during a community beach clean last Sunday highlights the impact single-use plastic is having on the environment.

The event was pulled together by Tim Duff, Mark Frost, Ian Hardie and Phil Knight with support from Whaingaroa Environment Centre and Xtreme Zero Waste. Tim, a keen kayaker, highlighted the issue of plastic accumulating on a

stretch of remote beach following a paddle up the coast north of Te Kaha/Mussel Rock.

“We thought it was a nice way to end Seaweek,” Whaingaroa Environment Centre coordinator Stacey Hill says. “Whaingaroa started Seaweek with Maui Dolphin Day and ended it with a beach clean.”

A group of 25 people of all ages and from as far as Waitetuna spent several hours gathering the debris, and Stacey says they found a shocking collection of rubbish ranging from car tyres and polystyrene to shotgun casings and plastic in all

shapes and sizes, washed up along this stretch of coast.

Xtreme Zero Waste education and communications coordinator Nenya Chapman says this stretch of coast and one south of Ruapuke are notorious collection points for debris, and the ocean currents shift the rubbish to these spots constantly.

Much of the plastic was unrecognisable and made pinpointing where it originated from difficult, but the group believe it’s a combination of local rubbish alongside rubbish washed up from outside of Raglan, and possibly outside of New Zealand.

Stacey says micro-plastics are an increasing issue in our oceans and the group found many nurdles – the microsized beads of plastic used in plastic production - which would have come from other parts of New Zealand where manufacturing occurs.

Overseas studies showed nurdles resemblance to fish eggs, a food source for a variety of sea creatures, posed a threat to marine life. According to recent

media reports New Zealand imported nearly 210,000 tonnes of nurdles last year and 61 per cent of plastics made in New Zealand are used for packaging.

Stacey says consumers’ choice around plastic products is important but the direction local and central government takes with policy-making is vital.

“There are many things individuals can do to minimise single-use plastics in their lives but the government support is really important. We also need the producers of this plastic to start taking responsibility” It is important for people to keep in mind the 5 Rs - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, Recycle - Nenya says, and container deposit schemes would help immensely.

They say the event also highlighted the need to organise at least threemonthly beach clean ups and hope to hold the next one in July.

beautiful day dawned on Saturday, March 10 for us to challenge other teams to become our Club’s Pairs Champions. We selected our own teams for this event. The system of play was the Two Wins to Qualify system.

There were four women’s teams and eight men’s teams.

After the two rounds had been played in the women’s event, Ann Bouzaid and Sue Russell qualified with two straight wins.

Heather Dalbeth and Eileen Stephens had one win and one loss, as did Maureen Wahanga and Pim Blair, so they played each other to find the other qualifier. Heather and Eileen won that match, so played Ann and Sue in the final. The winners of the final were Ann and Sue. Congratulations to you both.

In the men’s section, four teams have qualified for Post Section. Colin Bouzaid and

Murray Eddy, Ross Turner and Tim Ryan, Bill Bond and Jack Peel, and Terry Green and Alan Price.

Because Tim had been selected into the Waikato 5 Years and Under Squad to play in the North Harbour Quadrangular event on Sunday 11, our Post Section day had to be postponed and so will now be played on Sunday, March 25. Good luck to you all.

In the Quadrangular event, Waikato Men came third overall.

Our Mixed Pairs Championships will be held this coming weekend. Best of luck to you all.

Twilight Bowls will be finishing up soon, but it has been a close competition. More on this after it finishes.

Roll ups are on Wednesdays and Saturdays (unless championships are on) at 12.45pm, so come along and join in (fees apply). All welcome.

The next golf Fun Day will be a St Patrick's Day ambrose hit out, on Saturday, March 17.
