Providing swimming lessons locally fulfils our mission statement of helping our community to learn to swim and be safe in the water, to keep fit and to have fun.

We keep our fees low to ensure there are no barriers to participating for many families. However, we also know that there are many families within our community where our costs are still a barrier.

We are asking for assistance with sponsorship to provide lessons to those children and families who are unable to stretch their budgets to include swimming lessons for their child or children.

The Raglan Swim Club work closely with health professionals, local schools and iwi members identifying and approaching those families we think may want their children involved with our Club.

Each year the Raglan Swimming Club have had sponsorship from individuals, health providers and businesses and we wish to thank

them for their continued support and generosity.

Hayley Varnam of Heavenly, Mike and Joan Loten, West Coast Health Clinic and more recently Satnam Bains of Raglan Four Square and Sian Beattie.

The swim programme usually runs for seven weeks per school, term 1 and again in term 4. Each lesson is 25 minutes at a cost of $12 per lesson for our LTS - Learn to Swim participants or, it is $16 per lesson for squad swimmers - those students who have come through the ranks and wish to train and compete in endurance or competitive swimming meets.

Our sponsors donate money to the club to sponsor a child for one or two lessons a week. It is totally at the discretion of our sponsors how much they wish to contribute and the club directs this money to a child or children requiring sponsorship.

Daniel Whittington has a few ideas up his sleeve to help out the financially-stricken Raglan Club.

aniel Whittington is a problem solver and he’s put his mind to creating a plan for the financially-stricken Raglan Club.

The 26-year-old club member may hold the key to increasing the membership for the club as it battles to stay in business.

As with many clubs around the country, the Raglan Club is on the decline and Daniel says his generation are looking for something a bit different.

But, he doesn’t want to side-line the hardcore members in his plans and wants a facility that caters for the whole community.

“The club is part of the community and it’s a place that holds everybody together,” he says.

“People have done so much here it would be sad to walk away from it.”

His plan would mean demolishing the existing building and creating a facility with road frontage, featuring a large area for members, a travellers’ bar for non-members, a restaurant and zones for pool, darts, live entertainment and an outside deck.

“I felt there needed to be more connection to the street,” he says. “People don’t know what the building is when they look at it from the road.”

He’s realistic about the expense and as with other plans that have been on the table it would mean selling some of the club’s prime property.

“If they move it (the club) forward it will open up a huge amount of space out the back that they could sell off.”

Daniel met with the club executive on Sunday and was told the club would not subdivide and were looking for a quick fix

solution in the short term to increase cash flow.

“They really liked the drive way idea, and then in future building out to the front of the club and making a garden bar at the front.”

Daniel says they also discussed changes to the inside of the club to make it more welcoming.

He is now working on a layout design to transform the dancefloor and make it more accommodating for live gigs.

Living in Aotea, Daniel has put his problem-solving to good use in transforming the family farm into a self-sustainable offgrid retreat.

He’s a third-generation Raglanite and his father Dave is also a long-standing member of the club.

Tarot Talk

H

ello again from Tarot Talk - a weekly column in which I introduce a tarot card for the week and provide a little information about it. I hope you continue to enjoy this space.

This week's card is the Seven of Cups. This card can show the need to make a decision.

You could be faced with many possibilities and now is the time to make a choice and turn the possibilities into something more concrete.

The card indicates a state of dreaming - someone who is able to see beauty and excitement as well as difficulties in the future. However if we are constantly caught up in our own dreams, fantasies, and/or fears, we can never move forward and make those dreams a reality or overcome those fears. Now is the time to toss away the “castles in the air" and build something solid.

A choice must be made even though the apparent multiple options seems to be causing some kind of paralysis - either fear or anticipation. It may be that your thinking is muddled and you need to seek some kind of clarity about your options or future direction.

If you are unable to make a decision because of too many options, it may be time to carefully evaluate the pros and cons of each and make a considered choice.

When the Seven of Cups appears, it is important to look carefully at how disorganised your situation has become. It may be that things are a bit chaotic and some reordering or reorganisation is necessary. It is easy to wish for something, but not so easy to make that wish come true. So if this could apply to you, make sure that you are backing up your plans with work and effort. Commit to doing whatever it takes to reach your goals.

Park volunteers stumped their efforts often wasted

riends of Wainui Bush Park say they are frustrated Waikato District Council work in the idyllic reserve is often leaving them out on a limb.

But the Friends – a volunteer group who have tended the 10-hectare park now for a quarter of a century – insist all that’s really needed in most cases is better communication to ensure neither party barks up the wrong tree.

The weed-spraying of native vegetation around a mound of slowly mulching bamboo and the felling of a tree the Friends had just pruned are two recent incidents cited in an exchange of emails with council staff.

The Friends say the incidents occurred despite their repeated emails to the council asking for consultation before any action was taken in the park.

“How can liaison be strengthened to allow us to improve the park without wasting our effort?” longtime group member John Lawson asked of parks and facilities team leader Duncan MacDougall in an email late last year.

He complained the spraying of the poroporo – which was shading out the mulching bamboo – “has wasted that effort and set us back two years”. “Will the native vegetation be sprayed again if we try to encourage it to take over from the bamboo?” he asked.

The felling of a large tree occurred just weeks after the Friends had removed a broken branch. “Had we known the whole tree was to be felled, we could have saved ourselves that wasted work,” the Friends emailed the council.

They’d decided earlier the tree overall looked safe, and John said the logs left over from the chainsawing backed up that assessment as they were free from rot.

In another case, John said he got a call from a contractor who’d been asked by council to strengthen a bridge rail but could not find it. None of the bridges John described to the contractor fitted with what he’d been asked to do.

“If the instruction had been copied to us (the Friends) we could’ve saved some time by identifying the bridge,” John pointed out to the council.

On the plus side, the Friends are pleased the council has for some time now taken responsibility for organising the mowing of the park, as this frees them up for other gardening projects.

And they believe council staff are trying to be a little more communicative.

They’re also chuffed at the results of a major upgrade by the council last winter of two stream bridges and several bush tracks. They say the paths and bridges are now wider and more user-friendly, with no more “slipping and sliding in winter mud”.

and says they’re “beautifully drained all-weather paths now and much more accessible”.

However the Friends were less happy at the lack of notice over the timing of the upgrade. Twice they arrived at the park as usual every second Monday only to find the contractors had closed the reserve.

They say the timing of the work also flew in the face of a council assurance any work would be done when the ground wasn’t so wet, so as to minimise damage.

The emails provided to the Chronicle reveal that while the council apologised for the inconvenience and conceded the Friends should’ve been informed, it explained the contractors had a “window of opportunity” so had not waited till spring as planned.

Meanwhile, there’s no sign of signage the Friends have requested to make clear overnight camping in the carpark is banned. And five years on, the Friends are still waiting on signs directing the public through the maze of tracks.

A list of “do’s and dont’s” for park users also seems on the slow burner, apparently waiting for council policy to be finalised.

“It’s all about to happen,” says John, “but hasn’t.”

Parenting courses starting soon in Raglan

here is so much to parenting - it's one of the toughest, challenging and rewarding roles in our life - and sometimes it can seem overwhelming.

In this seven week course we will look at how we can regulate ourselves when

things get tough, how we can help our tamariki with emotional literacy and how we can support each other as a nonviolent parenting community in Whaingaroa, Raglan.

The classes are on Thursday mornings, 9.30am - 12pm at the Old School Arts Centre, from March 1 April 12.

Attendance at one of the first two classes is required to do the rest of the course.

he 17th annual Maui Dolphin Day is back on March 3 this year to celebrate our local taonga, Popoto or Maui Dolphin.

Working together to celebrate and protect our unique environment, Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC) and Xtreme Zero Waste have teamed up with the Department of Conservation to bring you this event featuring the infamous X-man on stage all day.

All rafts must be made of at least 80% recyclable materials (you can get 50% off all raft-building materials at Xtreme) use only paddle power and be sturdy enough not to leave any bits in our moana. Registrations open at 10am with racing starting at 11.45am. This race is always a lot of fun. Why not get creative, and get on the water.

The D4 are one of New Zealand’s top rock bands that toured during the 2000s, releasing two albums and relentlessly touring the globe while establishing a reputation as one of the most exciting bands to see live. The D4 have reformed to headline Auckland City Limits and have put together a warm up tour that kicks off with its first gig in Raglan.
