T h e manufacturers, Dow AgroSciences, claim Tordon has “moderate toxicity to eyes and [is] mildly toxic to skin.”

M o n s a n t o , manufacturer of Roundup, has recently been successfully sued for deliberately withholding from the public scientific knowledge that glyphosate was a cancer danger.

What concerns me greatly is the unnecessary use of glyphosate to control grass around Raglan’s playgrounds and our schools, and as a concerned grandparent and member of the public I would like to see Raglan at the forefront of a movement away from the use of toxic chemicals that are creating more consequences for the long term than they are solving now.

N

ew Zealand celebrates Te Wiki o te Reo Māori this week with the theme kia kaha te reo Māori (let’s make the Māori language strong).

For many in Whaingaroa, the te reo Māori journey starts at the Māori language immersion programme led by kaiako Neria Mataira at Poihakena Marae.

Hata Puriri is part Māori, Samoan, German, English and French, there’s a definite American twang to his accent and for the past three years he has been strengthening his te reo Māori at the marae.

It’s been a journey for self-discovery for the 54-year-old, who was born in New Zealand but spent most of his life in the United States when his Mormon parents relocated the family to California in 1973 when Hata was eight.

“At first, learning te reo was a way I could connect with my ancestors. I was hunting down my whakapapa,” he says.

Through his father, Hata’s tribal links are to Ngāti Kahungunu in the Hawkes Bay, and having lived away from Aotearoa for so long he had lost touch with his Māori roots.

To his surprise, he discovered a connection to the place he now calls home through his ancestor Mahinarangi from the Hawkes Bay and Turongo from Kawhia, whose love affair has special meaning to Tainui people.

“My cousins were always saying ‘why are you there (Whaingaroa), you’re meant to be in Wairoa’,” he laughs.

Of course, the surf is better here, he says, but the discovery gave greater meaning to his move to Raglan.

Hata likes the technique (Te Ataarangi) used at the classes and says it suits his visual style of learning. “The rakau method is great. I’m not academically strong but I have a good memory for images. They (the tutors) create a really a nice space to learn in.”

Developed in the late 1970s by Neria’s mother Dame Kāterina Te Heikōkō Mataira and Ngoingoi Pewhairangi, Te Ataarangi uses coloured Cuisenaire rods as a learning tool.

Learning te reo is also a way for Hata to take advantage of opportunities not afforded his own father, who grew up in a time when the language was actively suppressed.

Like many of Hata’s father’s generation,

to kōrero pākehā (speak English) was seen as essential for Māori to assimilate to the pākehā way of life.

The language is still considered in crisis with only around150,000 people (3.7 percent of the total New Zealand population) conversational in Māori and of those 84.5 percent identified as Māori.

The classes offered at Poihakena Marae run Monday nights, 6.30-8pm and offer the fundamental basics of learning te reo, while students who take the day classes (twice a week, from 9.30am to 2.30pm, Mondays and Tuesdays) are fast-tracked in their language acquisition.

Neria says intermediate and beginners learn together and the levels working side by side is the embodiment of the Māori tuakana/teina philosophy (older person helping younger person). Classes are total immersion and the focus is on speaking with no writing or reading in te reo.

Classes will begin again in February 2019 when the school year starts and beginners are welcome to join at this stage.

Raglan duo ensure latest title a stand-out on the bookshelves

I

t may be the fifth book of the awardwinning Tales from the Farm series but ‘Uncle Allan’s Stinky Leg’ – which publishes early next month – will have a “completely different” look and feel about it thanks in no small measure to the talents of a Raglan mother and daughter.

The makeover comes after local graphic designer Ezra Andre and her illustrator mother Margery Fern, together with Margery’s author sister Jennifer Somervell from Christchurch, decided their children’s books now looked outdated and weren’t among “the best” on the bookshelves.

“I’m pretty excited to see what comes back (from the Singapore printers),” Ezra told the Chronicle this week. “There was a clear market for a higher standard.”

Ezra – who has a one year old and now works from home – changed not only the font but also opted for thicker paper stock and softer colour for the illustrations to complement Margery’s use of watercolours. The drawings also have greater white spaces around them.

Meanwhile the shape of the latest book has gone from landscape or rectangular to a more “modern” square, adds Margery, so it stands out better rather than get lost on a bookshelf.

The self-published series has won accolades over the years in the US-based Purple Dragonfly Book Awards.

The books are based on Margery and Jennifer’s real-life adventures

growing up on a Hawke’s Bay farm in the 1960s and 70s, The latest colourful tale recounts the misadventures of their Uncle Allan, who broke his leg playing rugby then unwisely travelled to the farm to recuperate.

His plaster cast comes to grief while riding motorbikes and milking cows – finally disintegrating altogether in the bathtub – which results in two trips back to Wellington to have it replaced.

“He was hilarious around the farm,” recalls Margery, whose day job is as principal of Waitetuna School. She’s looking forward to meeting up again with her character of an uncle at October’s book launch in Christchurch.

“He was free and happy … maybe it was a 70s thing,” she reflects.

Raglan Area School students Shave for a Cure

A group of brave students and teachers from Raglan Area School fundraised for the Shave for a Cure event held last Wednesday in support of leaukemia and blood cancer.

S

tudents at Raglan Area School decided to make a stand against Leukemia and Blood Cancer by organising a sponsored Shave for a Cure event.

On September 5, Deputy Head Girl Ngaramai ElliottRooney stood alongside Mickey Brajkovic and several other students in front of the whole school and were shaved by Ray Bailey and Joel Rankine from Raglan Barbers.

The event was organised

by Ngaramai Elliott-Rooney

in collaboration with Angela Massey. Along the way, Angela was approached by 10-yearold student Mickey, asking to be involved in the fundraising efforts. When Mickey’s mother Mala was young, she lost her brother Anton to Leukemia.

Sadly, Anton passed away at 15 from complications during treatment. This is the reason that Mickey felt passionate about being involved.

Mala, Mickey’s Mum said, “I’m really proud that she was brave enough to do this for Anton and other kids with Leukemia, but I wanted to make sure it was worth it, that it would make an impact.”

It certainly made an impact, one that led Mickey to raise over $4000 for Leukemia and blood cancer. Ngaramai raised $400 for this amazing cause.

Raglan Area School is so proud of the shavees, and hope that the money donated really does make an impact.

The hair from Ngaramai, Mickey, and fellow student Jaime Witters will be sent to award-winning hairdresser Danny Pato to be made into wigs for patients with Alopecia and hair loss due to chemo.

What does a celebrant do?

Celebrant Robyn Riddle is available to officiate significant life events.

T

his week the Chronicle sat down for a chat with local celebrant Robyn Riddle to see what is involved with the services she provides.

Describe the role of a celebrant?

A celebrant usually officiates at a wedding or funeral, but is also available to help commemorate any other significant life events eg. Naming ceremonies, commitments in relationships, renewal of vows etc.

I am a civil celebrant which means I am not affiliated to any religious organization (although this does not mean my ceremonies won’t sometimes contain spiritual or religious elements).

Gather information from couples and families to gain clarity on the sort of ceremony they would like. It is all about hearing what is most important to them and weaving this information into a

meaningful event. Couples/families take the lead but celebrant creates a ceremony that flows and incorporates all the legal aspects. The celebrant ‘holds the space’, ensuring all the practical and emotional sides of a ceremony go smoothly.

I work with my clients to create a vibrant, authentic, loving portrait of the couple for a wedding, or of the person who has died for a funeral. After a few meetings, I spend time designing something that resonates with my clients, feeding this back to them for their input, this is their story, not the celebrants!

Training/qualifications: Celebrant training is available through the Celebrant School in Auckland and Christchurch-part-time and four papers over a year. Endorsed and encouraged by the Celebrants' Association of NZ, and by the Department of Births, Deaths and Marriages, as an effort to ensure high standards of celebrancy. However, it is

not compulsory for a celebrant to do any training. To perform wedding ceremonies, it is necessary to register with BDM, and be accepted as a celebrant by them.

Anyone can perform a funeral service as there are no legal requirements for this.

What is your background? What lead you on this path?

I am a social worker and enjoy communicating and working with people.

Supporting people to commemorate and celebrate important life events is rewarding for me.

Ritual is hugely important in our lives, and rituals have always been followed at times of change, whether it is the beginning of a life, a commitment between two people or a time of goodbye. It is a real privilege to be involved with people during these times, either celebrating at a wedding or honouring someone who has died- for me, to capture the loved one’s essence, and to be the catalyst for the tiniest bit of healing to be set in motion in such sad circumstances is why I 'love' doing this work.

What do you like about the role?

Meeting a big cross-section of people, hearing their stories and helping create meaningful ceremonies for them.

Flexibility –ceremonies can be held anywhere and at any time.

The longer-term planning for weddings and being involved in all the excitement, is special. Funerals are more immediate and the challenge is in speaking to family and creating a special tribute, with them, in a short time frame, for the deceased. I always feel this is real privilege.

In Raglan I am mainly asked to officiate at weddings, but there is plenty of potential for funerals to be held here too. It is good if people’s lives can be honoured in the place that they lived, and which has special meaning for them.

It also makes it easier for their friends to attend the funeral.

Bamboo boys return from a trip of a lifetime

A

bout a year or so ago, the Chronicle reported on some Raglan youths jetting off to the United States for a trip of a lifetime. The Chronicle sat down with the two boys, Te Ata and Herewini Barlow to hear about their experience.

Tell us a bit about where you two have been and what you have been doing.

We've been in Portugal for the past two months building and designing our own wharenui (marae) as a stage for the artists of BOOM Festival.

How did this opportunity come up?

Gerald Minakawa, a master bamboo architect, came to New Zealand in 2015 to help Bri and Nai with the ‘Soundsplash’ build. He taught us how to erect standard H frames to replace the massive marques so it was a bit more eco-friendly. I guess he was impressed with our work ethic and the Maori culture and wanted to portray that on the other side of the world.

Tell us about the festival you were involved in (music/food/people).

Boom festival is an eco-friendly, sacred geometry inspired, psychedelic trance festival that goes for seven days and happens every two years. 40,000 people from all corners of the earth come to celebrate it.

There’s no age barrier, so anyone is welcome.

The food is amazing. The people are loving and the atmosphere is crazy!

How many people/nationalities were you working with?

We had the biggest crew and most nationalities out of all the crews that were working at ‘Boom’. We had Americans, Russians, Chinese, Romanians, Poles, Indians, Portuguese, Mexicans, South Africans and of course Maori. All up, there were at least 16-17 of us.

How did you cope with language or cultural barriers, if any?

It was kinda hard at first, you kinda get the gist of everything after a while, just like any other place I guess. Mostly everyone spoke English, so we were safe What things have inspired you or changed your look on life from this experience?

It was definitely a life-changing experience. It’s inspired me to travel the world more and get out of my comfort zone and live life to the fullest.

You worked with amazing mentors in the form of Gerald (Bamboo DNA) and Pai. How was that learning?

It was a great learning experience working with Gerard and Pai. They’re awesome to work with - really easy going and overall just legends at what they do.

What was your favourite memory from your trip?

My favourite memories would be just experiencing the whole thing, seeing what we created from start to finish, seeing how it all works, all the amazing people we met on the way, all the amazing places we got to see when not at the festival. The whole two months was my favourite memory.

You bring home some amazing skills.

Will we get to see them?

You’re gonna have to wait and find out.

A fun day at the bowling green

I

f you want to have a go at lawn bowls here’s your chance.

The Raglan Bowling Club is hosting a Fun Day this weekend and everyone is welcome.

Starting at 1pm this Sunday, September 16, it will be a relaxed introduction to the sport for those who haven’t tried bowling or a chance to refresh for those who have.

Just turn up at the James Street complex in your mufti gear, wear a pair of flat soled shoes and be

prepared to give it your best shot.

Members of the club will give you a few tips on the game and will answer any questions you have.

There will be a chance to socialize after rolling a few bowls up to get to know how the club works and meet some of the members.

The Raglan Bowling Club has around 30 active players who participate regularly. They take part in weekly roll-ups on Wednesdays and most Saturdays.

Roll-ups are informal club gettogethers which usually start at

1pm and run for a couple of hours.

The club has annual championship events and some members travel to tournaments for extra competition.

“Bowls can be as relaxed or as competitive as you want to make it,” said the Fun Day organiser Alan Price.

“I started playing last season and I love the game. It’s a great game and we have plenty of good times.

“The club is really lucky to have a great coach who has helped improve the skill level of us newcomers.

“His coaching has certainly gone a long way to helping us get the maximum enjoyment out of the sport.

“Bowls is actually more challenging than it might appear to the casual observer, but it’s a buzz when you get it right.”

One man who gets it right more often than not is club stalwart Ross Turner.

Ross is about to launch into his 40th season at the Raglan Bowling Club and his name appears season after season on the club’s championship honours board.

Ross still loves the game he first tried all those years ago.

“It’s a game I would encourage anyone to give a go,” he said. “It’s made me a lot of friends and I’ve got to know many people over the

The Arts An occasional Q and A with artists in our community.

T

his week the Chronicle had a quick chat to artist Brodie Reynolds.

When did you first start painting?

I think it must have been discovering that I was way better at art than maths at school, so I thought I better stick to what I’m good at! I was always trying to find a garage or a corner of the house to paint in. I just love it.

How did you learn art? Did you go to art school?

I was very lucky to be given the opportunity to study art in Florence straight out of college. It was really there that I cultivated a deep learning for classical painting and drawing techniques. I went on to study at AUT and later in London.

How would you describe your paintings?

I guess I like to explore light and the abstract conversations that occur within nature’s elements.

I will usually work on several paintings at once, coming back to each one repeatedly to continue the layers, this gives a real depth and helps the light dance around on the canvas. I try to concentrate on the atmospheric essence of the landscapes, real or imagined.

Why did you choose oil as your medium?

I love the richness of oil paint, it also allows me a lot more freedom to move the paint around on the canvas.

What is your creative process

like? What brings on a painting?

Living here in Raglan is a constant reminder of how inspiring nature is. I find the mist breathtaking.

When it’s rolling in, it is like a great unveiling of our precious Earth and the magical pockets of time that will never ever happen again. Finding stillness is key.

How has your style changed over the years?

I’ve been very expressive and abstract in the past, but learning about the delicate art of using brushes properly in London gave me a real change of direction. I’ve worked on a few movie sets doing marbling and faux work, so I guess that reined in my brushwork and made me a lot more aware of how important every movement can be.

Are there any particular artists whose work you admire and are therefore inspired by?

Where do I start?! There are so many inspiring artists both past and present. I’m always studying Tim Wilson’s paintings, though, for his amazing light work.

Do you exhibit? And where do you display your work?

I have mainly been working on commission pieces, but I’ve had several exhibitions both in New Zealand and overseas.

I haven’t had one in Raglan yet, though, so watch this space!

Laughter the key to Raglan Golf Club’s night with Dave Upfold

T

he Raglan Golf Club’s fundraising efforts takes a new twist this month.

Following huge recent success with the Tim Shadbolt and Gary McCormick show and then a casino night, this month the club presents worldrenowned comedy hypnotist Dave Upfold.

Upfold is one of the busiest hypnotists, one of

the most copied and one of the biggest crowd pullers in the game.

He has entertained in resorts, casinos, theatres and of course, golf clubs, around the world.

On stage with his subjects (all volunteers from the audience) Upfold will have the crowd in fits of laughter for hours.

“All the participants are volunteers,” he said.

“Nobody gets involved unless it is their choice.

“Some people love the involvement while others prefer to sit back and be entertained – it’s a whole lot of fun and suitable for all ages.

“Laughter is the best medicine and I guarantee there will be plenty of that.”

The fact all participants are volunteers means there’s no worries about being coerced from the crowd.

Fun is the name of the game and the $50 price for a ticket to the show also includes one of the Raglan Golf Club’s “world famous” meals to set you up before the show begins.

Upfold has taken his show to the Cambridge Golf Club on a couple of occasions.

“He was here earlier this year,” said the club’s manager. “It was a great show. The crowd loved it and had a fantastic night. It’s one of the funniest nights you could imagine.”

Tickets for the Raglan show on Friday, September 28 are selling fast and are available to the public.

Waikato District Council Consenting of moorings about people and vessel safety – WRC funding available

A

pplications are now open for the final 2018 rounds of funding from the Waikato District Council Heritage Project Fund and from the Council’s Discretionary Grants Fund to support projects and events in the district.

Waikato District Council’s Chief Operating Officer Tony Whittaker says, “These funds support a range of heritage and other community projects and events that enable community groups to meet local needs and aspirations – so we look forward to hearing from local groups as to how we might assist them with appropriate Council funding.”

Upcoming events that have recently won support through the Discretionary Grants Fund include: • The Ngaruawahia United Associated Football Club 50th anniversary celebrations in October including a commemorative game featuring players from the past five decades (allocated $7,624), • Te Kauwhata’s A&P Show expected to attract people from around the district in December (allocated $6,293), and • The free Raglan Music and Dance Festival run by Waikato Rocks Trust in December to

showcase local bands and dance groups and expected to attract about 3,000 people (allocated $3,000).

Projects that have recently won support through the Discretionary Grants Fund and the Heritage Project Fund include: • a ‘Paper4trees’ waste minimisation and native tree planting programme for schools and preschools in Waikato district run by the Environmental Education for Resource Sustainability Trust (allocated $1,748.60), • an extension to the heritage train carriage shelter at Pukemiro Junction operated by the Bush Tramway Club on regular public open days and bycharter arrangements (allocated $3,104.35), and • the production of a local history book and educational resource, ‘Wāhia Ngā Rua’

by Mai Uenuku ki te Whenua Marae, which tells the story of the prominent Waikato chief Ngaere and how Ngaruawahia and the Hakarimata Ranges were named in the late 1600s (allocated $5,000).

The Discretionary Grants Fund is now open for application until 5 October and the Heritage Project Fund is open for application until 26 October.

Waikato District Council

W

aikato Regional Council is concerned about the risks of vessels breaking off moorings in Raglan and going adrift.

Raglan Harbourmaster Toby Kemp said the council had placed 30 letters on unauthorised moorings in Lorenzen Bay, Te Akau and Moonlight Bay, asking the owners to make contact with the council about their intentions with the moorings and to make them compliant and safe.

“Vessels are breaking off moorings and going adrift. No one knows the state of the moorings, and we need this knowledge and to know who owns them.

“We had a swimming platform break free and that could have done some serious damage to a boat on its mooring. And there is a yacht sunk in the water on rocks up past Moonlight Bay.” Mr Kemp said there had been a misunderstanding about the council’s intentions to get the moorings safe.

A column in the Raglan Chronicle on August 16 by Ross Henderson criticised the council for telling the owners of the moorings that they

were unlawfully occupying the coastal marine area and that there was no evidence the moorings were legal.

Mr Henderson wrote that the council’s actions raised a number of issues, mainly that the moorings preceded the Waikato Coastal Plan 2005, therefore “the use of them was not unlawful until the council made them so”.

He said compliance would make the Raglan Sailing Club, based in Lorenzen Bay, no longer “viable”, and there was nowhere else for the boats to go aside from the Zoned Mooring Area (ZMA) adjacent to the wharf, which was impractical.

In response to the column, Mr Kemp clarified why the council was requesting compliance.

“It’s about people safety, and the safety of other vessels in the harbour.

“Moorings have to be up to specific standards so the public knows they are not going to drift away.”

Regional council Coasts and Inland Waters team leader Suzanne O’Rourke said the Resource Management Act informed the coastal plan, and the plan required moorings to have resource consent “so we can all have confidence that the mooring is safe”.

“We are currently working with mooring users and have asked them to make contact and let us know their intent. If those users wish to continue to use these moorings then we will be asking that they apply for a resource consent as this is what the plan requires. Alternatively, the mooring will need to be removed.”

Mrs O’Rourke said the council oversaw 800 moorings in ZMAs in the region, and worked with those mooring owners to ensure they were compliant and had resource consent.

Authorising moorings ensured navigational and public safety.

She said the council was currently reviewing its coastal plan.

“We encourage the community to have their say on matters in the coastal plan, including the use of coastal space and the location of ZMAs.” Raglan Coastguard president Wally Hawken said moorings needed to be safe and “the way to have that authenticated is to have it consented”.

“We live in a world where we are increasingly having to be accountable, and compliance is a big part of that.”
