An opportunity for all members of the community to gain an indepth understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi.

The all-day workshop was taught by national coordinator of the Tangata Tiriti-Treaty People project, Dr. Ingrid Huygens, who brought the Treaty to life for attendees, sharing information many had not heard before.

“How can we understand where we are going, if we don’t know where we have been,” said Councillor Thomson, who was also in attendance.

There will be a follow-up to the workshop on Saturday 28 October 2017, in acknowledgement of the 182nd anniversary of the signing of He Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga

o Nu Tireni, the Declaration of Independence of the United Tribes of New Zealand.

The aim of the follow-up workshop is to explore how this new understanding of Te Tiriti o te Waitangi can be further acknowledged within the community to influence and inspire how the town grows.

Join the next community kōrero, 28 October from 10am to 12pm in the Supper Room at the Town Hall. Bring a plate to share for lunch.

New harbourside pump track pulls in crowds over holidays

here’s been no stopping young BMXers, skateboarders and scooter-riders these school holidays after Raglan’s newly built pump track bordering Kopua domain was declared all go for use.

Riders converged upon the challenging new circuit with a vengeance, taking pressure off the adjacent skatepark which has been a magnet for generations of local kids wanting to practise their ollies, fakies and other manoeuvres.

“The whole plan was to offload crowds from the skate park,” reveals local cycling promoter Dirk De Ruysscher who introduced the idea of a Raglan pump track at the time the mountain bike trail under the pine plantation overlooking Ocean Beach was being built.

He told the Chronicle the existing BMX track – which the pump track replaces – had become not only unsafe but also “too expensive” to maintain because of the prohibitive cost of carting lime from Te Kuiti every year.

raised asphalt surface that’s a first for New Zealand, he says.

“There’s calls from other councils now to build something similar, so we won’t be exclusive for long,” he adds.

Raglan ward councillor Lisa Thomson says the $120,000 track – which was only two months in the making – is a “fantastic” facility for Raglan to have in its backyard.

Her own teenage son, Karewa, has been among the throngs getting the most out of it every fine day of the holidays.

While the track is perhaps better suited to older children and teens, says Lisa, it’s been “awesome” to see little ones and adults also enjoying the new facility.

Funded by Raglan Kopua Holiday Park Board, the pump track is “bigger than anticipated” because its designers and builders – Chris Martin and Adam King – saw an opportunity to improve on their original plans while on site, Lisa explains.

The Rotorua-based pair – who established their own company ‘Empire of Dirt’ in 2012 – also built Raglan’s new MTB trail. They’ve earned a reputation as worldclass track builders since successfully completing the trails for New Zealand’s

round of Crankworx – the world’s largest MTB festival.

“They’re both riders and they know what they’re doing,” Lisa adds. “It’s definitely a first for them, this level of (pump) track … I think we’ve got really good value.”

The key feature of a pump track is that it allows riders to “pump” more and pedal less to maintain speed over a series of rollers, berms and jumps. The 30 by 20 metre Raglan track also takes up a smaller space than the old BMX circuit, which in turn leaves plenty of room for landscaping.

That work is still to be completed, says Lisa, but meantime an official opening with a free barbecue is being planned to “celebrate the track as a community facility”.

“We’re calling it Te Raenga o Rokikore Pump Track,” Lisa reveals, te raenga meaning ‘point of land’ and Rokikore the original name of that area including the sandspit. The land there is actually not part of Te Kopua Domain, as people commonly think.

Master the Surf with the DK Surf School

An occasional column featuring young achievers in our community.

Daniel and Renee are firm believers of looking after the children in New Zealand.

fter running the DK Surf School for three years at Auckland’s Orewa Beach, Daniel Kereopa and his partner Renee Davenport are bringing their skills and knowledge to the shores of Whaingaroa.

This week we spoke to talented swimmer and surfer, Joseph, who is training to compete for the Special Olympics regionals.

How old are you and what school do you go to?

I'm 16 years old in year 11 and now go to Rototuna Senior High School.

How often do you Where do you train?

swim?

I train at Waterworld every week with the Special Olympics squad. Stuart is my coach. I am learning how to do tumbleturns for backstroke!

Tell me about how you got noticed to train for the Special Olympics?

I was placed first in intermediate boys 25m AWD freestyle and breaststroke for Waikato Secondary Schools and first in 50m AWD freestyle. Wendy Smith a Swimming NZ Education Adviser, spotted me and gave Mike Smith from Raglan Area School her business card saying get Joseph to call me if he's interested!

What does training involve for you now?

Doing lengths of freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and practising tumble turns. Getting coaching ftom Stuart to improve my technique.

Do you have a goal with your swimming?

I'm preparing for my first Special Olympics Regional competition in Te Awamutu on 29 October 2017.

I hear you are also a good surfer. Tell me about how you learnt.

I learnt by spending time out

in the surf. Doing Sea Dogs every week was fun and it was good to spend time with friends. Mr C and Matua Pete were really good surfers and teachers. I also surf in my own time with my own Dad, winter and summer.

How often do you go surfing and who do you go with?

I go out surfing with whoever is passionate about surfing too, usually once a week.

How do you think young people get really good at something?

They use their own time to actually get better and improve to get really good at sonething. I do sometimes watch stuff about things I'm passionate about because then I learn what I could do and then I go and do it in my own time.

What other things do you like doing?

I like anything to do with nature.

I like caving and am interested in underwater caves. I also like to bike places, see friends to do stuff for fun with them like watching movies and playing games with them, and try to create time to do fun things with my family like playing pool or going bowling.

What do you like about living in Raglan?

I like the people and making friends with them. I also like the surf and going to different view spots. I like going out to the beach to watch the sunset and people surfing.

For Daniel, it’s not so much the time he has spent winning competitions and representing Whaingaroa on a National or International level, but in how he uses what he has learned moving forward.

Growing up in the waters of Whaingaroa, Daniel was tasked with learning how to interact with the ocean, which has since become the foundation of the DK Surf School.

The pair will continue to run their business in Auckland a few days a week, but their time there has helped them to solidify what sets them apart as both a business and as instructors.

They’re ready now to return to the roots of the DK journey.

Daniel and Renee believe in taking care of New Zealand’s children. Through the DK Surf School, they utilise their experience with the surf and their passion for the water, and channel it into providing a new experience for kids who might not have the opportunity to try surfing otherwise.

A big part of Daniel’s vision in bringing the DK Surf School home, is to someday see more of the local kids of Whaingaroa out on Ngarunui Beach, working for Surf Life Saving, volunteering for the Coastguard, navigating the coastline and protecting the visitors.

As a beachside town known around the world for its surf, you don’t see a lot of the local kids out in the water – Daniel and Renee are setting out to change that.

While their aim is to teach kids how to surf, they also teach skills and knowledge that can be used in other life situations.

“There are jobs available for them if they are confident in navigating the water. We want to bridge that gap for them. Making surf lessons more accessible is just one way of doing that.”

Daniel stated.

“The local kids need the opportunity to learn about their coastline, to understand how the currents work and how to make smarter choices while in the water.”

“When you know what you’re doing, the ocean is something you can enjoy on your own or you can enjoy with friends. But most importantly it’s something you can enjoy your whole life,” said Renee.

DK Surf School provides lessons, after-school and holiday programmes, week long surf camps, and starting next Thursday the 19th, they’ll try out their first Raglan based 8-week surf programme, open to all ages, 7 years and up.

Lessons are taught using kaupapa Māori and Daniel shares the stories of his people to bring inspiration into the learning environment.

And they run their camps as a total immersion experience, meaning the kids become a whānau.

They eat together, sleep marae style, learn together and surf together.

“They have to learn to work as a team. It’s less telling and more doing, leading by example.

We’re right there with them through every step of the camp.” said Daniel. “By challenging them, we empower them.”

Torpedo 7 believes in the vision and kaupapa of the DK Surf School and has come on to support them, making it possible for the DK Surf School to have access to all the equipment one might need to learn how to surf.

“We have a chance to really focus on the local kids. All it took was a small shift in the mentality and the structure of what we were doing.”

Combating the waters of the wild west coast is no easy task, but when you’re connected with the elements and you have the education of the environment, you’ll feel more resilient and safe out in the surf.

Generous donations get community van on the road

urfside Church recently replaced one of its van used to transport youth to and from the popular youth group held in Te Uku.

Replacing a 1987 van which was donated to a local community group, the 2013 Toyota Hiace, although second hand, feels like brand new says pastor Rodger Peart.

The $36,000 vehicle was made possible due to generous donations by local organisations Raglan Lions Club, Raglan Community Charitable Trust and WEL Trust.

“We are really grateful and want to thank them for their kind donations,” Rodger says.

Young people who attend the youth group

contributed by holding fundraising competitions and donations were also made by people all across the Raglan community.

The van is used to ferry young people from the pick-up point outside the Raglan Library at 6.45pm to Te Uku and at the end of the evening drop them off at their various homes in Raglan, Te Mata, Te Uku, Waitetuna and Waingaro.

Around 40 to 60 young people aged between 13 and 18 attend the group which runs throughout the year during the school term.

Raglan Community Christmas Dinner

At home with Frank and Jane Lorenzen T his week the Chronicle in collaboration with The Raglan Project is launching a monthly column called Home Sweet Home that features locals in their humble abodes. This week we sat down with Frank and Jane Lorenzen.

A

nother year has rolled around fast and Colin Chung and his team of helpers are organising another midday Christmas dinner at the Raglan Town Hall, on Christmas Day.

“If you are finding yourself alone; or without extended family; or for some reason you may not be able to afford Christmas dinner this year - then come on down as it’ll be like any other family Christmas dinner, the family just happens to be the Raglan community, and the home happens to be the town hall” says Colin who extends an open invitation to the community.

Around 200 people have attended in the past, and Colin, Rhonda Chung & their team will once again prepare a delicious feast including turkey, ham, lamb, pork, sushi, chicken, loads of salads and vegetables - they do however need extra desserts, so if anybody is making desert for your own dinner, make another for us, let us know and we’ll collect it.

Santa will be on hand to make this annual

occasion a day to remember with presents for the children and adults alike, and there will also be local musicians providing music.

To make this special event happen, the organising team makes a request to the community as they need donated inexpensive gifts to go under the tree, in particular ‘small gifts’ for adults.

On Christmas Eve they would appreciate helpers to come and decorate the hall. “We would like it if children could be encouraged to make their own decorations and come and hang them up so we can beautify the hall and the tree” says Colin.

The Raglan Hospital Trust, plus the local Raglan Lions have kindly donated funding to help with the expenses through their initiatives that support local community groups.

Frank: We have lived in this house for five years but I've lived in Raglan 83 years. I was born down at the homestead called The Oaks on Lorenzen Bay Road but its not there anymore. It was on a knoll overlooking the harbour, nothing there just paddocks and a dirt road leading to it. My father owned the farm from inside Greenslade road and back to Lorenzen and he subdivided it up. That's why the road was named Lorenzen.

Where we live now used to be the hay paddock.

Jane: I came to Raglan 64 years ago when I was 12. We have lived in three houses on Lorenzen Bay road over the

years. We had to downsize because of health problems so we came here. We tried Hamilton to be closer to medical facilities but we only lasted 3 months.

I didn't like it and felt lost so we came home.

Frank: We've seen so many changes over the years. So many more houses and less paddocks. It's progress I suppose.

Jane: I worked in the Raglan Post office when I was sixteen delivering telegrams and sorting mail. Frank happened to walk past the window and winked at me.

Frank: No it was the other way round. She winked first. She was a flirt!

Jane: When we went out we used to know everybody but not now. I guess every bodies at work.

We are lucky to have our daughter Anne in town who looks after us. She gave me this super-star-mum statue when she was 12.
