Waikato District Council supports re-establishment of waters governance group Waikato District Council has voted in favour of re-establishing a Governance Group to continue discussions around a Council Controlled Organisation which would manage the district’s water in future.

It will work through a variety of issues to reach agreement and establish the essential elements that determine how a ratepayer-owned Council Controlled Organisation (CCO) would function if established to manage waters operations across three councils.

A CCO could not be established before extensive consultation with the public which is unlikely to occur before 2017.

Are we expected to believe that kiwi can be released on the mountain while 1080 is dropped into their habitat? That will never happen, because it is well documented that they die at the hands of aerial 1080.

Karioi maunga (mountain) has been a 1080 maunga for the past 21 years, not a kiwi maunga.

The community should do more. The community should take ownership.

I applaud the work done by the Karioi Maunga Ki Te Moana Project. Every community needs dedicated volunteers. But in the absence of any comprehensive policy of support from DOC on the subject, how can the objectives be met.

Finally to those people who think 1080 is the best thing since sliced bread, go tell it to the kiwi, or tell it to the weta’s in your garden.

Kiwi on Karioi? Or 1080 drops? You choose, but you can’t have both. .

arry Woods, the bloke who rides in Raglan’s Christmas parade on a Harley Davidson motorcycle with a giant kunekune pig on the back, is attempting to break into the United States market with his quirky Kiwi shearing show.

Barry, a “natural fibre severer technician” by trade (a professional sheep shearer) and who is known to most people as his stage show character, Billy Black, is the master of creative marketing when it comes to business, which for him is all about promoting the “eco qualities of wool”. And he sure can spin a good yarn.

Barry wants to break into the country fair circuit in the US, which he says is huge. “The LA State Fair, a million people go there.”

In January, Barry is taking his Billy Black Woolman Show to the Western Fairs Association’s convention in Los Angeles, where he will put himself forward among hundreds of other acts to try and stand out in the crowd.

Barry’s show captures the heart of the pioneer farmer clearing the land with a cross cut saw, the dangerous job of jigger climbing, blowing up a log to make fence posts and shearing sheep. During his act he hypnotises a sheep and even gets audience members to try and set him on fire with a gas torch to demonstrate the fire-resistant qualities of wool.

“There will be the same old, same old there: clowns, hypnotists, sword swallowers, and then there is me, Crocodile

Dundee”, as he is often called because of the bushman’s hat that he wears. “I can put a sheep to sleep, get a lady on stage to set me on fire … and they will be going ‘what, what?’

“To them I am like a martian!”

But there lies the problem with the US market, Barry says. “We take a chance a bit more in New Zealand.

“When you are doing something outside the square everyone looks sideways at you.

You really have to work hard to get it over the line.”

But Barry isn’t new to trying to get his unusual ideas over the line.

He owns Woodlyn Park, a motel complex in Waitomo, which has a plane from the Vietnam War, a train carriage, a World War II anti-submarine patrol boat and two Hobbit holes as accommodation. Barry alternates his time between his property in Waitomo and a 15-acre farm block in Te Mata, on which he runs steer and sheep.

“A lot of people rubbished my ideas when I started,” he says, of his unique accommodation venture. But he has had the last laugh because Woodlyn Park, which is currently on the market, went on to win most innovative hotel concept prize at the Worldwide Hospitality Awards in Paris in 2012.

Barry began Billy Black Woolman and Kiwi Culture shows at Woodlyn Park, performing every day for tourists, but now takes only bookings, and performs at schools, conferences and other functions.

Along the way he has dreamed up many ways of capturing his audience’s – and

the media’s – attention: Jonah isn’t just a Harley-riding pig – he has his own rugby act where he tackles dummies of English rugby players and scores a try; in 2004, Barry rounded up a trio of hermit sheep to outdo the South Island’s Shrek and held the record for heaviest fleece for about two minutes until a piece of wood was found on the scales; and he had The Hobbit actor James Nesbitt, who explored New Zealand for documentary River Deep, Mountain High: James Nesbitt in New Zealand, set him on fire during one of his shows.

The crazy ideas don’t always pan out as planned, however.

In order to get his foot in the US market, Barry came up with an idea to create a world record for veteran shearers, which he was going to break in America amid mass publicity.

“No-one has done an official one (world record for veteran shearers) because a lot of shearers are out of the game by then, it’s too hard,” says Barry, who in an earlier life took part in a winning world record where 8500 sheep were shorn in one day, his contribution being 675.

“I was thinking of ways to get in the US market … that if at 60 I was shearing a good number of sheep I could use it as a way of marketing my show.”

So recently he went to Australia to get fit for a bid at creating such a record.

“When I got there the contractor asked ‘how many sheep can you shear’; I said ‘I’m not sure I haven’t shorn in 26 years’ … not every day, just in the shows, and he said ‘what?’ I said ‘yeah, but I should be

able to do the average’; he said what, 140, 160? I said ‘yeah!’

“First day, a sheep kicked the hand piece in my arm and I had to get it fixed up, six stitches … he was going to replace me and I said ‘no, no, take me back down to the shed’.”

Long story short, Barry worked through a bad infection resulting from the cut and over eight weeks sheared an average of 180-190 merino sheep a day, with his record being 300 two days after his 60th birthday – enough to tick a veteran’s world record off the bucket list at a later try. But then, just before returning to New Zealand, he was knocked over by a sheep and has done “some pretty serious damage” to his knee.

The idea of a veteran’s record is on hold, but he’s still up to the light duties of his Woolman show, and set to make an impression at the fairs convention in the US in January.

“It’s just something I am very passionate about.

I grew up on a sheep farm … we did it rough.”

ahuru Robb loves her job as a researcher specialising in freshwater ecology – not only because it’s “really relevant” to today, she says, but because it also includes the concept of mātauranga Māori in its programmes.

That’s working with Māori communities and using their traditional knowledge to help Māori communities manage their natural resources and environments, explains this 30-year-old Masters graduate who shifted nine years ago to Raglan where her mother Allison Green lives.

Mahuru’s one of only half a dozen Māori researchers at Landcare Research or Manaaki Whenua in Hamilton. “We do work all over the country,” she says, “and spend a lot of time travelling.”

But at the moment she’s fully occupied close to home on the ‘Living Water’ project which – in collaboration with DOC and Fonterra – aims to increase the health of lowland lakes Ruatuna and Rotomanuka in Ohaupo, and Areare in Taupiri.

It involves working with three hapū groups, Mahuru says, to improve water quality and biodiversity while developing the approach appropriate to mana whenua.

Taking Māori values into consideration to manage and increase the health of New Zealand’s fresh water is really relevant work, she insists. There’s been lots of pressure over the years on the country’s waterways through human impact, waste disposal, urban development, agricultural intensification, invasive pests and loss of habitat such as wetlands and streams.

Mahuru told the Chronicle she feels “so happy I am living here and doing this work”, which fits with the Master of Science degree she completed at Waikato University two years ago.

“I feel like I’m contributing to something wider than myself,” she adds referring to both working with the environment and mana whenua groups who get an opportunity through various collaborative projects to co-manage local resources.

Mahuru in fact first came to the job

Researcher Mahuru Robb approaches freshwater ecology through a Maori perspective. at Landcare Research through the thesis she did for her Masters, which involved working closely with Mōtakotako Marae – Ngāti Whakamarurangi, Tuirirangi, Ngāti Haua, Ngāti Whare, Ngāti Hourua, Ngāti Naho – in Phillips Road.

Her thesis was around the way mātauranga Māori and science work together to assess the health of wetlands.

“I needed a supervisor and contacted Landcare Research … who put me in

contact with Shaun Awatere and Garth Harmsworth who developed the wetland cultural health index,” says Mahuru. From that connection Mahuru all but stepped into the job at Landcare once she’d finished her studies.

“It was perfect timing,” she says.

Mahuru had worked previously, for five years, as a consultant with Kessels Ecology in Hamilton. “I loved working with the environment but for me personally there was something missing.”

And that, she can see now, was the “lack of opportunity for Māori participation in environmental decision-making … and the wairua or spiritual connection in my work.”

At Landcare Research – one of New Zealand’s Crown Research Institutes – the development of monitoring and decisionmaking tools that help Maori communities manage their environment fits with her own ethos and ancestry.

“I whakapapa to Ngāti Awa and Ngāti Ranginui,” she says.

Outside of the job Mahuru is still very interested in contributing to the Mōtakotako Marae area she tackled for her thesis, and is looking at developing a collaborative restoration project – co-led by the marae – at the Toreparu wetland.

“I want to contribute to our community,” she explains, “and (ultimately) to my own iwi in Whakatane and Tauranga.”

Workers dig up ancient human bones T spokesperson ainui

hapū environmental Angeline Greensill says there should be no more development of Māori land in Raglan following the unearthing of old human bones in Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive on Thursday last week.

The bones were discovered by contractors working with a digger on the grassy flat used for car parking next to the Kokiri Centre.

A new wastewater pump station was being installed by Te Kopua 2B3, a Raglanbased Māori land incorporation which is working on the nearby papakainga housing development, a project to help resettle Māori people back upon their ancestral lands.

Police and an archaeologist were called in, as is standard procedure, with the archaeologist determining that the bones were 400-500 years old.

Angeline says work has stopped on that site, and Raglan iwi will be talking to the Waikato District Council regarding any development of Māori land in the area, which is classified as Pa Zone.

She says the find was “definitely a burial”, and it was common that bodies were once buried in the sand.

“It’s not surprising, there were five to six pa sites in this area.

“It’s part of the Tainui history of this place.

“A lot of our ancestors were living here.

It’s common to find bones of ancestors.

“He is not the only one who is there and better we leave them alone.”

She says the human bones, which had been removed from the site, were reinterred on Monday morning, back where they were found.

“We had an appropriate ceremony, it was fitting: appropriate people, appropriate karakia to put him back to rest to be guardian there.

“People won’t be parking there any more.

“We will plant a few trees to commemorate the space and talk to the council.

“There is a history here and the road to the beach is only recent history. It’s time to re-educate the people about that.”

Waikato District Council customer support general manager Sue Duignan says the new wastewater pump station was being built by Te Kopua 2B3 to accommodate the growth in the area.

She says there are conditions within the subdivision consent that manage the protocols around archaeological findings and an archaeological report for the site had been prepared upon application.

Due care has been taken, she says.

“We understand local iwi and the development group have met to discuss the issues regarding the area and a decision has been made by the developer to relocate the pump station.”

The Raglan artist has just taken part in Hamilton’s first street art festival, Boon, which was held to transform grey walls into stunning artwork.

Last year, her artwork helped beautify Huntly as part of Project Harmony, a community initiative designed to build a positive environment in and around the town.

(None of her work has been tagged so far, she says.)

more pride in the street Denise was one of 11 artists selected for Boon, which got funding from the Creative Communities Scheme, Wel Energy and Resene, among others.

Nine large murals were painted on empty walls in the city centre over three days, from October 30 to November 1.

In Hamilton, her “very rough” wall in Collingwood St is now resplendent in her distinctive linear, cartoonish, architectural style, “drawn from the library in my head”.

“A few plants and some rocks, and a little house with a magnifying glass, and a helicopter flying towards the magnifying glass, very curious ... there are three kinds of trees, could be inspired by the, what do you call them? Pohutukawa?”

Denise, who has lived in Raglan for nearly seven years and has opened a small shop at back of Frocking Gorgeous, was born in Germany but her family is from the Czech Republic. She never felt at home in either country.

An industrial designer and illustrator by trade, her travels took her to Raglan and she stayed “because the people were very kind to me and allowed me to draw things”.

Working then as a freelance graphic designer, it was the first time she had ever considered that she could call herself an artist.

“Being an artist is something very scary in Germany, but it is not so much here.”

Her signature style is drawing straight onto any surface with a black line. “I just go for it.” She draws buildings, helicopters, robots and plants, inspired by architecture and nature.

The helicopters first appeared in her travels around Australia and New Zealand, she says, and represent the freedom that she loves: “They fly around and can go anywhere they like … come into the country and intrude

“I like the robot effect because it is like a product but with a personality.”

Boon coordinator Paul Bradley says Denise was chosen as one of the artists for the project because she has a “really distinct style” that “works really well in an urban environment”.

Denise, who is no stranger to drawing large-scale, says the mural in Hamilton is the biggest artwork she has done, and she had to use rollers to paint on her black lines.

The texture of the wall was too rough to allow for intricate, detailed work, she says, and she only had three days to complete the project.

“I got spontaneous helpers. They came from the streets,” she says.

“The second day they were kind of

hanging out and said ‘if you need any help just let us know’.”

So Denise got them to fill in her lines, colouring-in on a grand scale.

“They couldn’t believe we weren’t using spray cans,” she laughs, and says she suspects that their artwork is likely to be found under some of the city’s bridges.

“One of the them was a very young guy and he was very grateful to work on my mural.”

She’s taken him to Te Kuiti to help work on her Empty Spaces wall.

She says getting young people involved in public art projects is a good way of getting them off the streets and taking pride in their environment.

“It’s something the councils could look at doing more.”

Funding needed to keep Maui ¯ Dolphin Day Whaingaroa Environment Centre, TZeroheRaglan Community House and Xtreme Waste have all participated over the

years in organising the annual Māui Dolphin Day, which has run for the last 13 years. Last year was a real struggle to get the necessary funds required to organise the event which often draws a crowd of over 1000 people.

The annually held Maui ¯ Dolphin Day is under threat due to lack of funding.

The event, which focuses on the plight of Māui dolphin, is an end of summer celebration for locals.

It is also an opportunity for local organisations to show what they have to offer our community and potentially raise funds for their charitable purposes.

The day is always remembered for the recycled raft race, the stage backed with local performers and kids games on the beach.

To date we have not been able to find the funds necessary for next March’s event. We are in need of $12,000 to pay for the activities and co-ordination of the event. We are asking if there is anyone within the community who can help us keep this iconic event going.

Soundsplash announces full lineup for 2016 festival S

oundsplash 2016 is set to return to Wainui Reserve 8-10 January 2016. Soundsplash has transformed itself to become a multi-genre festival with an array of performers, highlighting world-class music across four stages, for three days. The return of Soundsplash will mark Raglan as the home of the only multi-day, outdoor festival in the Waikato.

The full lineup for Soundsplash 2016 has been released and the final additions to the bill will bring over 40 artists to Wainui Reserve. With all early-bird and advance tickets having sold out, Soundsplash 2016 is set to be one of the the biggest events of the summer.

The lineup features some of Raglan’s very own beat makers: Cornerstone Roots, Jamin-I, B-Rex,

Mighty Mighty, Brown Brothers, Dubsonic, DJ Atmosphere, Jinja Cat, King Macka, Drulox, Dealt Fairly, Table Suede and Strangely Arousing.

They’ll be joined by National and International acts who will provide the perfect soundtrack of summertime vibes for all.
