nature makes us feel good, decreases feelings of depression and anxiety, improves concentration, buffers against stress, makes lives meaningful, speeds recovery from tough times and reduces health inequalities related to poverty.

The year’s MHAW has woven together the Five Ways to Wellbeing with the nights of the Maramataka/ Māori lunar calendar to maximise energy with the natural world and boost wellbeing.

The MHF has partnered with Hāpai Te Hauora to help communities connect with Mātauranga Māori and uplift their wairua through nature.

“Māori creation traditions and whakapapa are core to New Zealand’s strong relationship with nature – and knowing and understanding these relationships strengthens our identity as a nation,” MHF Māori development manager Ellen Norman says.

Community workshops on waka ama, māra kai, Māori movement and the Maramataka are being held in North, South, West and Central Auckland this week.

The week involves events, challenges, resources and workplace activities to help New Zealanders let nature in to strengthen their wellbeing.

“Mental Health Awareness Week is a chance for all Kiwis to consider placing a greater priority on their mental health and look at the tools and opportunities available to ensure their mental wellbeing is the best it can be,” Mental Health Foundation (MHF) chief executive Shaun Robinson says.

“A record number of people, workplaces, organisations and schools have registered for updates on MHAW this year, and this shows us that New Zealanders really are prioritising their wellbeing. They’re wanting to learn more about how nature can uplift their spirit and are placing their mental health and wellbeing front and centre more regularly,” Mr Robinson says.

“We’ve seen so much enthusiasm already around Aotearoa. From an interactive mural painting in Dunedin, to a kaumātua-led hikoi to the summit of Matukutureia and a nation-wide Wellbeing Photo Challenge supported

by Nikon and Shakti Mat, people are putting their own spin on how they get out into nature.”

Raglan Naturally kicks off community engagement phase

aglan locals were out in full force at the Raglan Naturally community engagement event on the weekend at the town hall.

Hundreds turned up during the two-day event to check out the work of the 11 focus groups and to have their say about what’s important to them.

Kicking off on Friday evening, Waikato District Council representatives including Mayor Allan Sanson, chief operating officer Tony Whittaker and general manager community growth Clive Morgan attended

and agree the event demonstrated the hard work put in by the Raglan Naturally group over a number of years.

"We can't wait to work together as we move through this blueprinting project, which of course will encompass the incredible work put into Raglan Naturally.

Together we'll be able to demonstrate what the Raglan community want for their town in the future," Morgan says.

On the Saturday, the town hall was set up with a kids’ zone, table tennis table, focus group snapshots, food, music and story-telling.

Throughout the day the supper room

was used for guest speakers including Timebank’s Meredith Youngson, Raglan community board member Tony Oosten discussing Raglan’s infrastructure, Xtreme Zero Waste’s Rick Thorpe, Bexie Towle from Karioi Maunga ki te Moana, Karamea Puriri discussing business and tourism, Whāingaroa Environment Centre’s Anna Cunningham and transport focus group member John Lawson.

Raglan Naturally coordinator Gabrielle Parsons says the event is the start of the Raglan Naturally’s community engagement phase and there were still more opportunities for locals to contribute.

“Community engagement is the most important part of this phase of the Raglan Naturally process and we want to hear from everyone who has something to share. It was great to have such a large turnout over the weekend, everybody was keen to contribute and we received some really positive feedback.”

Ludicrous at the Old School

L

udicrous, a combined art show from October 20 to November 2, features the work of 13 artists and all sorts of crazy. It is the brainchild of Jodi Collins, local arts ninja and coordinator of Ahoy Studios.

Jodi has been scheming up this arts project since 2017.

Her own work, clay figures and Skully-wags, will be featured. Each artist has been given the title of the show but no other direction, so the work will be represented by a wide range of media and variable compositions. The show opens on October 20 with wine and nibbles and good music from Halcyon Birds and Justine Francis coming all the way from Okato. Some of the 13 featured artists include: Jodi Collins.

Wanda Barker. Artist/ writer, MFA. Paints fabric, destroys canvas, makes poems and stitches old tapestries, embroideries, aprons, tea towels and any old shabby things she can get her hands on. Distorts and wrecks dolls in sculptures with building foam. Wrote a book, All Her Dark Pretty Thoughts in 2017.

Artist, musician, writer, actor. “And into the forest I go to lose my mind and find my soul” - John Muir. Based in Kirikiriroa/ Hamilton, works with nature, explores a sense of mystery and self-reflection. She has a desire to contribute to her creative communities fuelled by study in Tikanga Maaori and Te Reo Maaori and Uni of Waikato.

Pearl has worked on a series of poetry zines called ‘Take me to bed’ and ‘XOXO’, started song writing and formed Halcyon Birds, with partner Tonamu Namioka. “It was necessity that got me drawing, it got me painting too… I believe in doing what you love so here we are.”

Sees herself as a creative woman rather than an artist. Takes a creative and loving approach.

A self-taught clay worker she devotes time to organising the Raglan Community Clay Shed. Work for Ludicrous is created to make the viewer smile and interact with the clay. Clay is a great teacher in accepting failures and moments of serendipity. All of my work is created at the Raglan Community Clay Shed.

The show will be an eclectic mix of paint, sculpture, clay pieces and Ludicrous whimsy.

It will be playful, theatrical, inspiring, quirky...something to engage with and remember.

programme aims to show visitors and locals behind-thescenes at some of Raglan’s top environmental enterprises.

Aimed at connecting people to some of the inspiring sustainablyminded people and organisations in Whaingaroa, the first Raglanite tour of Kaiwhenua Organics, Xtreme Zero Waste and the Whāingaroa Environment Centre on Saturday, October 13 is for locals only at a reduced price of $40 instead of $65.

So far, Karioi Maunga kit e Moana, Plastic Bag Free Raglan, Xtreme Zero Waste, Taunga Kereru permaculture farm, Kaiwhenua Organics, Solscape and the environment centre will take part in the tours, and project managers Valerie Bianchi and Anna Cunningham hope to grow the

project and offer tours to visitors, corporates, local government and tertiary education groups.

Another three tours as part of the pilot will follow with a one-day community and environment tour to Taunga Kereru and workshops with Plastic Bag Free Raglan/Bag

It Raglan and Karioi Maunga ki Te Moana.

On Saturday, November 10, a sustainable Raglan tour starts with presentation by the WEC and a small beach clean, followed by workshops by Plastic Bag Free Raglan/Bag It Raglan and Karioi Maunga ki te Moana.

The final tour is a weekend retreat of sustainability and yoga at Solscape on December 1 and 2.

Having consulted with the organisations involved, Raglan ECOllective Tours Valerie and Anna say the project will not only help WEC become more sustainable and less reliant on funding, they will also take off some of the pressure of these organisations to provide educational opportunities for the general public.

“We asked ourselves what does WEC do well. We know we are good at admin and environmental education.

We want to share the good news stories about the environment and we are really fortunate in Raglan to have so many experts in this field,” Valerie says.

“There so many negative stories in the news about the environment and they are not very inspiring or motivating. We hope these tours will provide motivation for people to make little changes in their lives,” Anna says.

The tours will be led by Tiaki Coates, who Valerie says is a great at connecting with people and telling the stories of Whaingaora.

Raglan Rally features local Jack Williamson in a Subaru R4

Jack Williamson will be racing in the final round of the NZ Rally Championship.

T

he final round for the NZ Rally Championship will take place in Raglan and Te Akau on Saturday 14 October.

Many of you will know the Williamson family who live on Cone Hill Farm at Waitetuna,

and Steve, Brenda and Jack would love the locals to get behind their rally team.

While Jack has been rallying in the NZRC and moving up the ranks for the last three seasons, this is his first season driving the Subaru

Waitetuna's Jack Williamson will be racing in the Subaru R4.

R4. “We have been improving with each and every rally and the team are really looking forward to this one”.

On the night before the rally (Friday 13 October) there will be a special ceremonial start down in the heart of Raglan starting at

around 5pm. Every rally car will be parked up and on display for the public to view This gives everyone a chance to mix and mingle with the drivers and view all the rally cars up close. Drivers will include NZ’s own WRC driver Hayden Paddon.

Two pieces of work have been completed after the group received funding from the WEL Energy Vital Impact (Housing) Fund in March this year.

A housing audit drawn from various databases tells us about the number of houses in Raglan, how many are occupied or used as holiday homes, rented out on AirBnB or other nightly accommodation sites and the trends over the last few years in changing rent and purchase prices. It also draws some conclusions about local income based on adjustments from the 2013 census, which enables some calculations about affordability.

The householder survey, which was available for local residents within the Raglan ward to complete during August and September, explored the type of housing people are using to accommodate themselves, what that is costing them and how much stress people are under in relation to housing affordability.

Nathan Orr from Landshare NZ, an online platform that connects those wanting to lease or share land with those wanting to rent a space will explain how Landshare works and later in the day talk us through his own experience of building a tiny house within all the ‘rules’. Nic Greene from Habitat for Humanity will update us on the latest project for H4H and the kind of services they offer.

Danica Lidmila, who, with her partner Tom, designed and built a tiny home, will share their experience of the build and how to live in a tiny space with two kids under 3 and Fiona McNabb will present on how to get the most out of a 10m2 building.

Other speakers are still being confirmed, but the day will end with a panel discussion about the housing affordability issue and WRAP will map out the next steps for the project and plans for 2019.

We will be serving Mamazing Kombucha on tap (which you already know about), but what you may not know is that we are going to be selling Kowhai Creamery Ice Cream by the scoop over summer too, kicking off Labour weekend.

This is so exciting for us at the Herbal Dispensary, as we have found another fantastic business that puts its ethical practices first! Kowhai Creamery believe in ‘real food, real flavour and real simple’.

They source their milk fresh from their Jersey herd on their home farm in Waharoa, a family farm established in 1923, which practices ethical, eco-friendly, biological and sustainable farming methods.

Kowhai Creamery started in 2015 with a 3-litre churn, milk from their Jersey herd, berries they grew in their orchard and a concoction of secrets. With very little ice cream knowledge, they embarked on a journey into the unknown, which has ultimately paid off.

Reminiscing on their childhood (selling lemonade in roadside stands), the team at Kowhai Creamery came up with the idea of

an ice cream trailer, which is parked most days down the road in their local Waharoa village.

Within six months of making their first small batch of ice cream, the Kowhai Creamery were award winners, taking home two silvers for their Blueberry and Salted Caramel Gelato. Now with 11 awards under their belt and being awarded the best gelato of the land 2017, their approach and business ethics haven’t changed.

Maureen wears the pants at shed where masses of clothes recycled

Maureen put in 191 hours of volunteer time last month, some of those hours were spent helping to sort masses of second hand clothes.

For that and much more she’s recently become a recipient of the club’s international Melvin Jones Fellowship – her name forever inscribed alongside other fellows on a plaque at its Chicago headquarters.

Hers is the highest possible Lions award, local club president Bob MacLeod told the Chronicle.

“And she deserves it.”

Maureen – who’s been a Lions volunteer for years and is often behind the counter of the op shop – was overwhelmed to receive the honour at this year’s district 202L convention in Hamilton, and has her own engraved plaque to show for it.

“It was really nice,” she says while cursing lightheartedly the duplicity of fellow volunteers who got her to the ceremony without revealing a hint of the award to come.

Says Bob, known as the big chief: “They were reading out about this distinguished Lion and Maureen still had no idea it was her.”

Volunteers who meet at the Coastguard shed – temporarily, while the Old School shed in Stewart St is rebuilt – say it’s a bit like a Lions marae down there with dog-walkers and other passersby calling in for a cuppa, courtesy

of the neighbouring backpackers’ power supply.

Maureen took over as shed convenor a few years ago from the late Kaye Ardern and reckons that if ever riled she simply remembers the Lions motto ‘We Serve’.

Kaye and Wendy Coxhead were both awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship five years ago in recognition of their commitment in the operations and management of the op shop, and in the running of the local Lions club which has now served the community for 45 years.

The award was established in 1973 in honour of Melvin Jones, the founder of Lions Clubs International.

The 101-year old foundation is now headed for the first time by a woman president, Gudrun Yngvadottir of Iceland, who aims to encourage more women participation in the club.

Junior surf life saving rookie programme

I

t’s that time of year again, the weather is heating up, the days are getting longer and Raglan Surf Lifesaving Club is getting prepared to open the doors to another season of Junior Surf.

There are many reasons why children may benefit from coming along to Junior Surf sessions. Raglan revolves around the ocean, a wonderful yet powerful force which provides both immense fun but in turn, is at times strong and dangerous. Teaching our children how to read the beach enables them to understand the forces in action within the water and how to have fun in a safe way. Having an active involvement in managing risk around the water provides opportunities to make choices which will keep both them and their friends safe long after they have left home.

Junior Surf encourages children who have an active competitive streak and at the same time those with a more relaxed personality.

There are opportunities for Carnival and competition participation throughout the year, we enter the raft race, attend the Anzac parade and have a float at the New Year’s Eve parade.

There are fun overnight stays at the club where movies and marshmallows will be up for grabs.

The Junior Surf programme works through a framework to allow students to progress both within the season and over the years with the ultimate goal of being Surf Lifeguards themselves. Once you reach 13 years old, you can join the Rookies programme which

fine tunes your Lifeguard skills, allows you to spend time on patrol and prepares you for your Surf lifesaving award. You will also have the opportunity to take part in the annual Northern Region Rookie challenge.

Junior Surf is supported by a committed and experienced team of coaches. This year we fortunate enough to include a number of lifeguards within the coaching team. Anne Snowden is the convener of Junior Surf and has supported the growth of Junior Surf within the club for many years. Together with the coaches, Anne is aiming to make Junior Surf a key element within the club and wider community.

We are always looking for new coaches and full training is provided to anyone who feels they would like to volunteer their services.

Families are actively encouraged to participate and to support the children both in the sea and on the beach.

The club always welcomes new members and as part of Junior Surf, families become club members. If you have always wondered what the view looks like from the clubrooms, here’s your opportunity!

Junior Surf registration is on 28th October 10am -12pm at the Surf Lifesaving Club at Ngarunui Beach. This will be for 7 to 13 year olds. The first session at the beach will be November 4th November. Under 7’s will start in January 2019 when the weather and water warms up.

enevieve Cheesman is a Raglan resident who is planning on setting up Raglan Softball at Papahua Domain in Term 4 and Term 1.

With a long history in the sport, Gen is passionate about getting youth involved in this team game. It will be a free community club for kids of most ages to come along, learn the game and have lots of fun every Tuesday afternoon down at the Domain. Sessions will run from 4pm to 6.30pm.

come for all or part of the time. There will be no need to organise teams as the children will be split into groups when they turn up on the day. The sessions are open to 8 -14-year-olds. A $5 koha is requested at the start of each term

She is also making a plea to the community for help and asks, “Do you have any softball mitts, bats, batting helmets, a game tee or facemasks in your garage collecting dust? Do you have time between 4pm and 6.30pm to come down and teach, play, score or cheer them on?

to the children of Raglan, Te Uku, Te Mata, Waitetuna and Kawhia, but we need support in the way of gear, time or donations for new gear.” Gen says she and fellow organiser, Nikki Abrams have set up a Facebook page that will keep everyone updated.

“We'll be kicking this off the first Tuesday after the holidays on October 16 and we’ll be circulating posters around Raglan and Whaingaroa to start this great initiative with a big bang. So, if you can help in any way, please PM myself or Nikki Abrams, or better still, jump on our FB page (Raglan Softball), like it and leave us a post.

amaritan's Purse is an international humanitarian organisation that sends a shoe-box containing a variety of small items to thousands of children who would seldom have ever received a gift at Christmas.
