Dear Editor Thank you for publicising the new buses. The bike rack works fine, though the bike sways around disconcertingly.

I look forward to seeing surfboards on the new racks.

It looks like they should work well too.

What doesn’t work well is having a gap of over 4 hours in the timetable and going back to a Sunday bus with only 2hrs 30mins in Hamilton, rather than the current 6hrs 15mins. How can NZ Transport Agency describe that as “a high quality transport option”?

Although the consultation earlier in the year showed the bus as going out to Manu Bay at weekends throughout the year, the timetable now shows

that it ended at Easter. A pity surfers won’t get a chance to try out those racks until October. The $4.50 fare may put them off too. Hamilton fares are expensive at $3.80, but we have to pay even more.

It was also unfortunate that the publicity didn’t include mention that the 11.20 has been retimed to run at 1.40; hope there weren’t many passengers left waiting.

Despite global warming concerns and the fuel efficiency of buses, local and national politicians seem to show little interest in getting our bus use up from the current 2% or so to the 20% or more found in most other OECD countries. Why? Regards John Lawson.

inning the Rip Curl Pro on home surf has given Billy Stairmand a confidence boost in his bid to qualify for the World Surf League Men’s Championship Tour.

Stairmand, who has been back in Raglan for a couple of months since competing in the Australian Open in Manly and New Castle’s Surfest, beat two-times defending champ Maz Quinn (Gisborne) at Manu Bay on Saturday.

He says his win in Raglan, which has put $3000 into the kitty for his international campaign, was “good” for his confidence after not doing too well in Australia.

He’s “gunning” to be in the top 10 of the qualifying series by the end of the year to compete in the Championship Tour.

That means upcoming trips to Japan, South Africa, the United States, Europe and Hawaii and being at his surfing best.

“I’ve got to save up some money.

I’m pretty much funding myself at the moment,” says Stairmand, on the phone from Auckland where he is doing a bit of work to top up his bank balance.

Saturday’s $3000 win has been gratefully received and “gets to pay for my next flight”, which will be on May 20 to Japan.

“Hopefully every contest I go to I make some money to get to the next competition,” says Stairmand, who won his sixth national championship title in January in Piha.

Of his win on Saturday, he says: “I was feeling super comfortable here, obviously it is my hometown. I have been surfing so

much here recently and training, my board was feeling good all day and so was my surfing.”

The last day of the two-day Rip Curl Pro was played out in clean 1m-1.5m waves.

Stairmand posted 16.73 points in total, leaving his opponents requiring near excellent scores to catch him.

This was the third title the Raglan local has won in this event (2008, 09 and 11).

Local surfer Taylor Hutchison finished fourth in the final with a performance that will also build his confidence as he heads to France for the World Surfing Games that start on May 20.

In the open women’s division, Raglan’s Jess Santorik, who has won the event on four occasions (2007, 09, 10 and 12), came second to Whangamata’s Ella Williams.

“Coming so close to winning is disappointing,” admits Jess, who has a baby, Katja, 15 months old.

However: “I am so stoked because it is such a huge achievement, having a baby and not having as much time as I used to go surfing.

“It was so close. I had a seven and all I needed was a six. I could have got the score but I couldn’t get the waves. That’s competitions for you.”

Jess scored 12.13, with the winning points total being 13.43.

Raglan surfer and the youngest finalist Indica Ratima, 19, finished in fourth place.

in the first season of a new online doit-yourself series.

UK architect George Clarke, perhaps best known here for his programme ‘Amazing Spaces’, offers guidance on “thinking big in a tiny house” to a young Auckland couple as they balance having to trim the size of their new beach retreat against the needs of a growing family.

While the Mitre 10 Tiny House series has only a very specific target audience – digital-age DIYers – Raglan has been getting national exposure in recent days courtesy of television advertising of the new on-demand programme.

George Clarke himself has been seen around town on and off too since last year when the DIY project kicked off with Jacson and Dominique Kluts welcoming him to their elevated Kaitoke Bay site up a long, shared driveway.

But locals themselves have been largely oblivious to what was afoot in their own back yard. Retired WDC area office manager Steve Soanes – whose driveway is only a stone’s throw from the Kluts’ – was away at the time and had no idea the 35sq m house was being moved on site until well after the event.

Another near neighbour saw the sudden addition to the skyline only the next day when he looked out his kitchen window while making breakfast.

One of the few in the know was longtime local Chrissy Cox, who sold part of her back section to the young couple about five years ago when they were just engaged. She was delighted to see their bach arrive and told the Chronicle Jacson and Dominique – who have camped many times on site, first in a tent and then a caravan – were “great neighbours”.

The six-part DIY series follows Jacson, a firefighter, and Dominique, a primary school teacher with a new baby on the way and two-year-old daughter Lilia, on a whirlwind journey to build their tiny house in an Ardmore Airport hangar – avoiding the pitfalls of a wet winter – from the ground up.

With a long wish list and a small space it took some innovative thinking, clever

design and good old-fashioned Kiwi ingenuity to pull the build off.

Viewers can follow their journey from the first episode in which the couple are figuring out just how big a tiny house really is through to seeing George Clarke’s reaction at their finished product on site in the last episode.

Of course there are hiccups all along the way, with an unexpected surprise in episode two demanding a massive rethink and a hold-up in episode four when the couple worry their build won’t fit through the hangar door come moving day.

But ultimately the tiny house looks “fantastic”, George Clarke enthuses on his final visit to the Raglan site. “Obviously Jaco and Dom set out to create themselves a very lovely house but in fact they’ve gone way beyond to create a place they’ve only ever dreamt of.”

Dominique says: “It still seems like a dream. I love coming here (to Raglan).”

The family’s finished 4.2m-high contemporary beach house on the 559sq m section comes complete with a lounge, bench seating with storage, kitchen, full bathroom with a generous walk-in shower and a bunk bedroom for the children. The master bedroom is up an indoor ladder and has a deck overlooking the water.

“It is luxurious,” says Dominique. “The design choices we’ve made don’t make it feel like a tiny house.”

The Chronicle found some small builds in town and around including Solscape’s earth domes and eco-baches, and a few other quirky options – including a treehouse – on Facebook’s ‘Tiny Houses Raglan’ site.

Raglan ‘engaged’ in wastewater talks Space needed aglan’s representatives to for new Raglan R Waikato District Council are confident that the community Playcentre building has had good engagement regarding Annual Plan changes to wastewater services that will see a targeted rates increase of between $124 and $180 for residents from July 1.

Last week, Waikato Mayor Allan Sanson said he was “surprised and disappointed” by the low turnout of ratepayers to council drop-in sessions to learn about three options of proposed works to mitigate the risk of sewage overflows in the district.

Council decided to consult ratepayers about an expanded programme of wastewater works after it was criticised last year for three sewage spills in four months into the Raglan Harbour.

Fewer than 200 of 11,000 affected ratepayers had turned up to the sessions about the options that will see targeted wastewater rates increase by between $47 and $254 across the district, depending on location.

However, Raglan Community Board chairman Bob MacLeod said while only five people turned up to a council drop-in session at the Town Hall Supper Room on April 27, he

and Raglan Ward councillor Lisa Thomson had had great engagement with the public regarding proposed plans for wastewater system upgrades.

Bob said education programmes about the wastewater system had been held at Raglan Creative Markets and he and Lisa had been out on the street, outside the SuperValue, informing people about the options outlined in the Annual Plan consultation document.

“Society has changed somewhat.

Now you have to go out and meet them,” said Bob. “Because we had those spills, we have been engaged the whole time, we’ve been at the forefront of it all.

“Here, a sewage spills shuts down Raglan.

“It’s been quite interesting. People have certainly read the (Annual Plan consultation) document.”

Councillor Lisa Thomson agreed the Raglan public were well informed and engaged with the process.

She said she would probably be outside the library this week with information about the Annual Plan options, and would likely do a mail box drop to remind people to get their submissions in by May 15.

“People need to let the council know the course of action it should

take. Here, in Raglan, we have to do something – we can’t not invest in our wastewater infrastructure.”

Lisa said while education was key – the Annual Plan consultation states that blockages caused more than 80 per cent of the wastewater overflows in the district in the past three years – the last two spills in Raglan were due to a broken pipe and failed telemetry after a power outage.

“Education is a big component in alleviating problems we have, certainly, but ultimately we do need to spend some money on our infrastructure.”

Of 259 submissions the council has already received, 51 per cent are in favour of option two, which concentrates on improving wastewater infrastructure near waterways and environmentally sensitive areas.

Lisa said the highest number of submissions from Raglan had so far supported option three, which would see an overhaul of the entire wastewater system across the district.

Waka ama regatta a ‘great spectacle’

The 2017 Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka regatta is set to be a big event.

aglan’s annual waka ama regatta promises to be a “great spectacle” this weekend with over a thousand paddlers taking part in races.

Whaingaroa Whanau Hoe Waka club chairperson Amber Hartstone says what used to be a whanau gathering of waka clubs has turned into a huge event, and if it continues to grow in popularity every year “I don’t know what we will do!”

“It’s almost doubled what it was last year and that was a big regatta,” says Amber.

She cautions Raglan residents and visitors that there will be over 100 canoes coming into town for the event on Saturday, and State Highway 23 and Marine Parade will be busiest between 6am and 11am.

“There has to be 77 boats here at seven in the morning for the first race,” she says, “so be careful on the road”.

Last year there were 58 waka on the start line of the first race, the 8km for novice and junior paddlers,

and, lined up side by side, the canoes stretched all the way across the harbour.

Collisions are inevitable when the starting gun goes off.

Amber says with 19 more boats in this year’s 8km race at 9am “we are just going to have to think about how we will manage that. It will be quite a great spectacle”.

Entries are also up for 24km races.

Altogether, 169 teams from 49 clubs across New Zealand are competing in Whaingaroa’s 23rd regatta. The youngest paddlers are aged 11-13 and the oldest are over 70.

Amber says the numbers are not unexpected but “amazing”.

“I would have been expecting anywhere from 600 to 800 paddlers.”

She says Raglan’s regatta is popular because the harbour is nice to paddle in and there are not too many long-standing, long-distance races on the waka ama calendar.

“If people know it’s a good event they want to come.

“Particularly for the junior and

novice teams, unless they go overseas they won’t get to start on a start line that big.”

Regatta organiser Haidee Rangiawha says she has had some sleepless nights worrying that she may have missed something in the planning stages of the event.

“The big, obvious jobs are easy.

It’s the little things that will determine if the day runs smoothly or not.

“I’m looking forward to the race and seeing all the waka out on the Raglan Harbour.

“The Whaingaroa hoe is one of the biggest races in New Zealand. I think people just love the opportunity to paddle here and Raglan is central for the paddling community.”

Traffic management at Te Kopua Domain will be in place from 5.30am.

Parking for the event will be around the boat ramp area and the airfield.

Spectator viewing of the races will be best at the race start times of 9am, 10.30am and 1pm from the footbridge and then along Cliff St and at the wharf.

Raglan Playcentre is asking the community for help to find a site for their build.

Raglan Playcentre needs the community’s help to find a site for a purposebuilt, fully equipped facility after plans to lease land at Raglan Area School has fallen through.

“We really need help to find a site. We had a site and it was glorious,” said Raglan Playcentre president Bridget Bull.

But while the school is still the preferred site for the new Playcentre, issues with parking, roading and congestion got in the way and there seems to be no way around it.

Bridget gave a presentation on the need for a new Playcentre building to the Raglan Community Board on Tuesday.

The Playcentre currently runs once a week from the Scout Hall in Cliff St. “We have outgrown the space,” said Bridget, who also described the trials that came with not having your own facility.

“We have to unpack a shed to set up in the morning. That’s not a big deal unless you are pregnant or have a toddler hanging off you, screaming at you.”

Also the toilets are outside and they can’t hang the kids’ artwork up on the walls.

“We will get more Ministry

of Education funding if we have our own premises … and we will be able to deliver a bigger and better service to the community.”

The group has plans for the ministry-approved new purposebuilt building that is three times the size of the Scout Hall.

“It will be fully equipped with modern wonders like indoor toilets,” said Bridget, and the plans also include rooms for changing tables and places where babies can sleep.

About 15-20 families use Raglan Playcentre but the new building will be able to cater for mpore than twice as many families and operate five days a week.

Raglan Playcentre has already raised nearly half of the money for the building with commitments from Playcentre ($300,000), Wel Energy Trust funding ($125,000) and Raglan Lions ($1500).

“We really want ideas for a suitable site,” said Bridget.

Raglan Area School principal Malcolm Cox said the district council could not approve the site for building because there was insufficient car parking.

“The whole thing with car parking put the kaibosh” on the plans, he said.

“It’s a great personal blow to me.”

Calling all Raglanites, We would like to invite the Raglan community to participate in a special event on Wednesday, May 17. This will be a unique night to fundraise for a special organization in our town - The Raglan Community House.

As most of you know, the Raglan Community House offers a place for individuals and families to get advice and support on many different levels. They are reliant solely on government grants and charitable contributions, which, at times, can stretch resources and prevent them from doing works that are so vital to the health and well being of our beautiful community.

To be more sustainable they are looking at developing new, and strengthening existing, income streams to fund the organisation and continue to provide valuable services to this community.

They are hoping to renovate the basement of the House to become a large meeting/training room for workshops, projects and courses, as well as continuing to offer services such as counseling & other essential support structures.

Rock-it Kitchen is holding a one night only, fresh 3-course menu,

complimentary arrival drink and auction to fundraise for this very important cause. We are asking businesses within the community to donate something that can be auctioned off on the night, all proceeds from which will go directly to the Community House.

The event will be advertised in the Raglan Chronicle and everyone’s support and donations will be mentioned. Anything big or small is worthy of this cause and we would love you to be a part of this community spirit.

If you cannot make this event but have something you would like to offer for the auction, please let us know via email as soon as possible, before May the 14th, and we can put your name and donation up for support.

ella is an 11-year-old student at Maeroa Intermediate and has been working towards receiving her Koru Flash badge— one of the tasks she took on to earn her badge was the ‘join a community group and give service to the community’ task.

To tick this task off the list, Bella joined Plastic Bag Free Raglan’s Bag It sewing group

during the school holidays. She attended one Bag It Raglan sewing session and afterwards organiser Vicki gave her some extra fabric to take home. Over the rest of school holiday’s Bella was able to sew 97 reusable bags.

She even sewed an extra bag to gift her teacher. Bella shared with her teacher why Raglan is working towards becoming a plastic bag free town, highlighting that Raglan is a seaside community and is aware that there is a major pollution issue. She says, “By

making these reusable bags, we are helping people become more aware of pollution and the dangers plastic bags pose to our environment.”

The general nature of the business conducted under the licence is Motel and Conference Centre. The days on which and the hours during which alcohol is sold under the licence are: MOnday to Sunday 8:00am to 1:00am the following day.
