I suggest that the council needs to be punished for doing this. At the end of the day, they must supply good pot-able water. If they don’t then they are not entitled to charge. If every water consumer deducts what they think is a fair amount from their water account, taking into account the costs of cleaning this black residue out of their system, there is nothing a council can do about it. I would suggest that the costs of sorting this out could easily run to $75 per hour and more for the consultation that must go on by residents who need advice.

It may be that the WDC owes consumers for the polluted water they sent out. There are no excuses and they cannot charge the cost of purging the system.

Dear Editor THINK OUR BEACHES ARE CLEAN? THINK AGAIN! Recently a friend and I decided we would pick up rubbish that had been noticed at the high tide mark below the museum/information office windows.

We went down the steps at Joyce Petchell park, turned right and what awaited us was overwhelming. In less than 30 metres we picked up as much as we could carry in a large garden

sack (see attached pic). This is what was lying in this small area, imagine how much is in the rest of our inner harbour?

What we left behind is an unmeasurable amount of tiny particles visible in the mud and sand, breaking down, about to enter the food chain.

Don’t drop your rubbish and when you see some, please pick it up. Whose responsibility is it?

Raglan teen builds hutches for happy bunnies

T

Amelia Penfold has been making rabbit hutches for the rabbits housed at the Waikato SPCA.

hey may not be in a completely natural environment but the Waikato SPCA rabbits have Raglan teenager Amelia Penfold to thank for feeling the grass beneath their feet and being able to hop about.

The 18-year-old animal lover who volunteers once a week for the SPCA was concerned that many of the rabbits up for adoption were kept in cages because the cash-strapped animal welfare agency didn’t have enough hutches – so she built some.

“None of those rabbits were getting to go outside and hop about and eat grass and that made me really sad,” says Amelia, who put out a plea on social media for old hutches and cages to do up and got some donation boxes going in Raglan shops and cafes to help cover the expense of materials.

After spending about 100 hours in labour – thorough cleaning, making frames sturdy, waterproofing sleeping areas, replacing mesh, staining, sometimes a total rebuild – she has completed four hutches and has another two on the go.

“I am pretty pleased with them, they’re really structurally sound. I think I have become obsessed with it – any time I have I am in the garage working on them,” says Amelia.

And the rabbits like them, too.

“They’re very happy rabbits who like being outdoors. They just used to sit in one spot, very boring, nothing interesting going on. Now they’re whizzing back and forward and they love stretching out, up on their hind legs, and nibbling on grass.

“They’re really happy bunnies.”

Amelia, who is moving to England next month to study for a Bachelor in Animal Behaviour at the University of Exeter, Cornwall, started volunteering for the SPCA in Hamilton in June after returning from overseas travel.

It was a four-day trip to Chitwan National Park in Nepal that opened her

eyes to what she wanted to do with her life – become a field ethologist studying the behaviour of animals in their natural environment.

In the park, she saw a tiger in the wild, along with elephants, rhinos, gharials, turtles, monitor lizards, monkeys and many species of birds.

“It was absolutely incredible. There we were out in the jungle observing it. I came to the realisation that’s what I wanted to do.”

Amelia’s volunteer work at the SPCA is to give her some experience with animal behaviour ahead of her studies.

“You have all sorts of animals that come in and you get to see their behaviour, if they have been traumatised, if they have become very protective of themselves because of what they have experienced … but they can also be really loving as well.”

There is one such “big and super soft” rabbit under Amelia’s care at the SPCA. “He has quite a character about him.”

He would lunge at people from inside his cage but “when you start stroking him he melts into this giant ball of fluff in rabbit heaven”.

Amelia says having more space means the rabbits can behave more naturally.

She’s built shelves in her hutches for them to hop up and down from, and windows from the sleeping areas so they can see what is going on outside.

“I’ve given them a more interesting environment. Rabbits need to be stimulated through toys and hutch design.

“The SPCA has no spare money to do any of this and no time. I think it was a really important thing to do.”

The Te Whaanga 2B3B2 & 2B1 Ahu Whenua Trust (AWT) was highly commended in the Maori category of the awards for expanding the trapping network of the Karioi Maunga Ki Te Moana (Mountain to Sea) project in 2015, cutting 30 kilometres of trap lines with loppers and machetes across 2000 hectares of steep coastal forest.

Raglan biodiversity heroes recognised at national awards W ork to help restore biodiversity on Mt Karioi has been recognised by the New Zealand Biosecurity Awards.

were ecstatic that their work was recognised at the awards ceremony at Parliament, Wellington, on August 2.

“It came as a complete surprise, actually,” says Sandy, because “the boys” are still right in the thick of predator control on the mountain.

AWT is currently contracted to help the Department of Conservation and Waikato Regional Council with possum control on Mt Karioi.

He says the team has “increased their knowledge one-hundredfold” working with all the various organisations on such work.

The Karioi Maunga project is a community-led project committed to restoring healthy functioning ecosytems to the mountain by building thriving populations of birds and restoring their habitats, particularly focusing on greyfaced petrel.

It has over 120 volunteers.

Karioi Maunga project co-ordinator Kristel Van Houte, employed by A Rocha Aotearoa NZ, nominated AWT in the New Zealand Biosecurity Awards.

She says the Karioi Maunga project wouldn’t be possible without the partnership of AWT. “It’s really important to recognise all the hard work that they do.”

In her application, she wrote: “Working together, A Rocha and AWT have achieved more than either partner may have thought possible and we aim to see an increase in large-scale rat control, feral cat control and intensive protection of seabird breeding habitat over the next few years, with a commitment to building on the support and cooperation the project partners have already achieved.”

treme Zero Waste and Waikato District Council are pleased to announce that later this month all Raglan urban households who currently receive recycling and prepaid bag collections will also receive a foodwaste collection.

The equipment for the foodwaste collection service is free of charge and will be delivered this month to your property during the week prior to collections commencing. The equipment will be left inside the property boundary (over the fence or inside the gate) and consists of a kerbside collection bin (green), a kitchen caddy (grey), a pack of 40 compostable foodwaste bags and a care and use brochure.

Like your recycling crates, the equipment belongs with the property. If you move house

please leave the equipment at the property.

Please write your address clearly on the side of your green kerbside collection bin.

The equipment will be delivered to all urban households between Thursday, August 17, and Saturday, August 19. The kerbside foodwaste collections begin for Raglan West on Monday, August 21, and for Raglan East on Tuesday, August 22.

Foodwaste collections will be every week and on the same day as your usual collection day and you can start using the service as soon as you get the equipment.

Place your kerbside collection bin alongside your two recycling crates, cardboard, paper and pre-paid bag (if you need one) by 8.30am on your collection day.

The compostable bags for the foodwaste collection are provided free of charge. When you run low, a reminder slip near the end

of the pack should be placed on top of your full foodwaste bags inside your kerbside bin on collection day so that the driver can leave you out some more. Please only use the compostable bags provided by the service in your kitchen caddy; compostable bags from other sources are not suitable for our composting process at the moment.

Remember to put your glass in one crate, plastics and cans in the other. Keep paper and cardboard separate and well secured (tied or in a bag) and the food waste bin needs to be put out with the handle in the locked position.

By using all these recycling services you should be able to use less pre-paid rubbish bags, thereby saving you money.

Future gigs also include: The return of local funk outfit Mighty Mighty on Saturday, September 9, Hamilton punk band Contenders hosting a night on September 16, while the weekend of September 22 and 23 brings two of Raglan’s favourite bands to town. The Nudge are playing on Friday while The Knights of the Dub Table perform on Saturday. September is rounded off by Racing, an offshoot of The Mighty Checks, playing Saturday, September 30. All other nights we have resident DJs with either free entry or a small cover charge.

hey’ll be making their own bed – and lying things on and over it – at Raglan’s biennial Spring Flower Show early next month.

The ‘Let’s Make a Garden Bed’ themed multi-media category, along with spring blooms and floral art, will be a focus of the September 2 show.

Raglan Horticultural Society president Geoff Pownall says a bed will be built in the church hall at Stewart St, where the show is traditionally staged, and entrants can be as creative as they like with the theme.

He’s expecting entries could range from silverbeet slippers to a calendula coverlet, a

pansy pillow or maybe even a broccoli bedside lamp.

It’s all about letting your imagination run wild, Geoff says. Creations using anything from paint, metal, clay and wire to flowers, fabric, cardboard and wool are eligible for this multi-media category, which he adds was a real success last time round.

The long-running society hopes to break recent records and attract upwards of 100 entrants in the show, which alternates every second year with a garden ramble.

There are various interesting categories for people to enter, Geoff says, including a children’s section for which youngsters can get busy making sand saucers, aqua jars and miniature gardens on dinner plates. “We’ve visited all the local schools and have really pushed for the younger ones to be involved … with a prize for the best school.”

As well as flower and vegetable categories there’s the popular floral art section which will be judged on colour, creativity, balance and quality of the creation. This is where entrants get to make the likes of posies, table decorations, native plant decorations – and can even dream up a ‘Raglan Fantasy’.

A small slice of local history will also be included in this year’s event, says Geoff. Some documents relating to the now 115-year-old society were recently discovered hidden away in a cupboard of the hall, so flower show schedules from the 1970s and certificates and prizes dating back to the 1920s will be on display.

All categories at the show are free to enter, but there’s a limit of one item per class, per person. Entries will be accepted on the day from 9am through to 11.30am, when judging is set to begin.

New classrooms address rising school roll

T

he youngest students at Raglan Area School are excited to start the third term in a new classroom after the refurbishment of the junior block.

The old block, which opened in 1962 and had not much done to it over the years, has had a dramatic overhaul, which meant the students worked in the library for the first two terms of the year.

Now they are all back where they belong, in larger spaces with interlinking breakout rooms and wet rooms for painting and messy work. And there’s a giant 30-plus-metre deck – all under cover for extra space – along the length of the block with basins and taps for washing hands and feet.

Principal Malcolm Cox says the teachers and the students love the refurbished space.

“The rooms are warm, double glazed windows … the lighting is better and the rooms are carpeted.”

The new entrants classroom is twice the size now, to accommodate a growing number of students throughout the year.

Meanwhile, three “roll growth classrooms” were craned into place during the school holidays to provide relief for the numbers of students in the senior school.

The new classrooms are sited on the old basketball court.

Mr Cox says he hopes they will be ready for the year 9 students to move into in four to six weeks, “by the end of the term”.

Given the roll numbers, the school is already due even more classrooms by the Ministry of Education, he says.

“They told us when we hit 500 they would do another review. We are over 500.”

Skate school for kids

ear 7 and 8 students from Raglan Area School have been attending a skating school run by Htown Skate Project at the local skate bowl during their sports slot on Fridays.

Htown Skate Project has been able to provide these sessions to kids thanks to funding from Sport Waikato, allowing them to give lessons at low cost and they can also provide skateboards to kids that don’t own their own.

“We have a lot of kids interested in skateboarding so we thought we'd jump in and secure our spot for term 3. With support from Pete Maloney and Lee Copson we got the programme off the ground and had a magic day at the bowl that everybody enjoyed,” said RAS sport coordinator Sam Cowley.

“At this stage we're offering the sessions to year 7and 8 students as they showed the most interest and we had the support of the teachers.

“Htown Skate have been super easy to deal with, they relate well to the kids and bring a lot of knowledge and skill with them.”

The sessions will run until the end of term and the school hopes to increase the number of sessions and students involved.

Surf Life Saving celebrates Northern Region excellence

ifeguards from Surf Life Saving Northern Region’s (SLSNR) 17 clubs will gather on August 12 to celebrate the best of the 2016-17 season.

The region’s annual Excellence Awards will take place at Shed 10 on Auckland’s waterfront. More than 30 awards will be given out on the night in three categories: lifesaving, sports and regional awards, along with service and distinguished service awards and life memberships.

Major awards include Lifeguard of the Year, Volunteer of the Year, Administrator of the Year, Club of the Year and Rescue of the Year.

SLSNR chief executive Matt Williams says the number of drownings at the Northern Region beaches sadly was up on the 2015-16 season – 18, compared with 14. Almost a third of those resulted from being caught in rips.

But beachgoers were generally getting the message. “We had a lot more people at the beaches, though there were comparatively fewer interventions per person on the beach.”

Due to safety concerns brought to the Councils attention, a reserved area will be introduced 100m either side of opotoru causeway in Raglan. It is prohibited to swim, dive, play or fish; or use any vessel or to be in the area unless you are a certified worker or have express permission signed off by appointed Fulton Hogan personal. This reservation will take effect on 31st July 2017 and shall remain in place until the 30th Sept 2018 and only extended upon request to Waikato Regional Council.
