Dear Editor, I want to congratulate Brian Scrafton for taking concern to the Waikato District Council about the use by its contractors of the poison glyphosate, commonly known as Roundup. He is correct that many parts of the world do not permit its use because of its harmful consequences.

Recently, the Californian State Environmental Protection Agency has placed glyphosate on the toxic chemical list as cancer causing.

A neighbour recently ate ripe blackberries found along the stream. She was later ill. In North America blackberry festivals in some towns are held and the fruit is celebrated.

Blackberries can be safely picked along road sides and in empty lots and on council land because they are not sprayed. I fear many of our visitors do not know

that poisonous spray is used in "clean, green, New Zealand!"

I expressed my own concern in the Chronicle (17 December 2015) after returning to my home to discover that despite having "No Spray" signs on my berm, the road side had been sprayed and the grass and plants I had growing were brown and dead. I see that your journalist has been told that this is the only solution that the council offers to those of us concerned about poisoning and destroying the biodiversity of our environment.

This is not good enough. Despite the "No Spray" signs I have had my berm sprayed at least three times that I am aware of. The council are our employees--we pay their salaries from our rates. It is time they worked for us.

Daniel Kereopa ready to defend Waterman title

R

aglan champion waterman Daniel Kereopa is feeling pretty relaxed ahead of The Ultimate Waterman 2016 challenge where he is defending his title.

Daniel, who won the inaugural event last year, will compete against seven other elite watermen from across the world over eight disciplines from March 12 to 20 in order to find The Ultimate Waterman (TUW) 2016.

Hawaiian’s Connor Baxter and Kala Alexander are returning for the event, along with Mark Visser (Australia), Danny Ching (USA) and Manoa Drollet (Tahiti), with newcomers Caio Vaz (Brazil), current SUP world champion, and Zane Schweitzer (Hawaii).

“I’m really excited to have these great watermen back in the country. With my name in the mix, it shows that we are, and can be, some of the best watermen in the world,” Daniel says.

Just a few days out from the start of competition, Daniel is feeling good, well prepared and “keen to get into it” with a rigorous daily training schedule behind him.

“It’s more for everyone else [TUW competitors] to prove they’re better than me.

So it’s up to them to see what they can bring, coz I’m bringing heaps!”

Last year there were six disciplines: the short and longboard; stand-up paddle and endurance; outrigger canoe (waka ama) and the big wave paddle in surfing.

This year there are two additional disciplines for the athletes - the underwater strength run and swim and the prone paddle board.

“It’s an exciting part of who we are [as watermen] – how flexible, adaptable and capable of picking up new sports we are and doing well at them,” Daniel says.

The competition starts at Takapuna Beach this Saturday, March 12, with The Ultimate Paddle Day. Athletes will compete in the 16km outrigger canoe race and the public will take part in waka ama, prone paddle board and SUP events.

The previous day, the TUW athletes will take part in a Mauli Ola Foundation surf experience at Orewa for kids with cystic fibrosis, after the official welcome and blessing.

While Auckland-based, TUW is a mobile event whereby the disciplines will be held in different locations, depending on the surf conditions, and may include a visit to the South Island.

The Ultimate Waterman 2016 culminates on Sunday, March 20 with the SUP Endurance Race at Waterman Central, Auckland Viaduct, where the 2016 winner will be crowned.

Hawaiian Laird Hamilton, arguably the ultimate waterman himself, will visit New Zealand from March 18-20 to support the competition and do some media and public events around The Ultimate Waterman.

Red Bull Media House is stepping up its coverage of the event this year, planning to produce and heavily promote a three-part

Laird Hamilton and 2015 Ultimate Waterman Daniel Kereopa at the 2015 prize giving exchanging a hongi. series from TUW 2016 that will screen first during a “Waterman Week” on Red Bull TV in September.

The media company has boosted its production investment in TUW this year, including increasing its production crew to 25 people, demonstrating the potential RBMH sees in the NZ-owned event.

“They are the key to this event, taking it to the masses via social media and freeto-air digital television that will be available in 37 countries with a potential audience of 1.3 billion people,” says TUW creator and Raglan-based Surfing NZ chief executive Greg Townsend.

“That’s unheard of in New Zealand until now,” Greg says.

Three young women from Raglan, with the help of artist Paul Bradley, painted a bright mural on two sides of the changing shed during the weekend.

The project was part of the digital online Raglan Creative Series, by freelance film-maker Maryann Tuao. She is creating six 15-minute documentary episodes showcasing workshops by six established artists teaching their skills and knowledge to youth, which will be put online later this year. Other artists who will mentor youth in the digital series include ta moko artist Simon Te Wheoro and carver Aaron Kereopa.

Tatum Kingi, 20, Pania StanwayThorpe, 18 and Kaea Ruawai, 17, who all took art in high school, brainstormed their ideas for the mural in workshops with Paul in January, and presented their proposed

groups to create murals, says the project has been an “awesome experience”.

“They put really cool ideas together.

“They have all worked really hard and hopefully they have learned loads.”

Maryann says the main focus of her digital series is on youth.

“To give youth support in the (art) work they are doing. It’s a bit of mentorship, to build their leadership skills, and to give them guidance.”

By teaching the three the fundamental skills of mural painting, they can then go on to create more pieces for the community and engage other youth in similar projects.

“We had a lot of fun together and I felt privileged to experience the girls sharing their passion and creative talents during the project. It was an opportunity for the youth to express their creative talents in a public space based on what is significant to them today and their connection to Whaingaroa/ Raglan.”

The mural depicts a girl, who represents the women of Raglan and the female form of Mt Karioi, and her hair becomes the waves of the sea, which is a significant recreation area in Raglan.

“Then we have Karioi, and Maui’s dolphins because they are an endangered species and come into our ocean, and we wanted the stingray because it’s out there, it’s like a protection, a kaitiaki, a taniwha,” says Kaea.

The three also have painted the sun in memory of their friend Raa Ngaru Smith, 18, who died after being thrown from the back of a ute when it crashed into the harbour on Wainui Rd on Boxing Day, 2014.

They say they got a lot of good feedback while painting the mural, that it was great to have something bright and beautiful on the walls of the changing shed.

Williams used to let houses Jtheane around Raglan but nowadays only renting out she does is of a

charming country cottage in Binna Burra, NSW, on the farm she and husband Ken share with 75,000 chickens.

“I’m totally at home (here) in the Byron Bay hinterland,” the former Ray White Raglan Real Estate property manager told the Chronicle last week between ironing sheets and stocking the cupboard for guests arriving at her Airbnb accommodation – a converted milking shed on the property.

The farm’s gone from dairy to pigs to chickens, which are “really lucrative”, says Jane. But now she’s nervously excited about her and Ken’s plans to slowly convert the property over to hemp farming following the passing of a medical marijuana bill through Australia’s House of Representatives and Senate.

“I’ve just been talking to the hemp licensing agency and we’ve got our application for growing hemp ready to go,” she told the Chronicle last week of the shift in Australian law to allow cultivation of cannabis for medical or scientific purposes.

“We are in a prime position to grow plants

commercially for extraction of tincture … but it’s early days yet.”

Jane’s been happily married across the ditch for a few years now, and is clearly enamoured with what she describes as a busy but productive farm life in the hills just 15 minutes’ drive inland from the bustling coastal town of Byron Bay. It’s a bit like going from Raglan to Te Uku, she says, though the small inland town of Bangalow’s only a few kilometres away in the other direction from their farm.

“I adore my life here,” Jane enthuses.

But at the same time she feels privileged to be able to come and go between her old home town and the Byron Bay hinterland, admitting “a big chunk of my heart’s in Raglan”.

Jane reckons she had a dream job as Ray White property manager for her last three years in town. “It was career-focused and very socially responsible, lots of fun and well paid.”

But then love stole her away. In fact her colleague Julie Hanna was to “blame” for the romance which became a marriage, Jane jokes. She met Ken through Julie at an auction in Hamilton and “kaboom – that was it”, she says.

Ken, an ex pilot, had the farm in Australia while Jane had her own home at the time in

Upper Wainui Road. That meant a series of romantic trips across the Tasman for both Ken and Jane until a year in Hong Kong together sealed the deal.

“I think I got married in 2012,” Jane tries to recall. “Yes, we were engaged while living in Hong Kong in 2011 then eloped up to far north Queensland to get married, much to the chagrin of my mother in New Zealand.”

Jane spent more than a couple of decades in Raglan all up, much of it “happily unmarried” to former partner and builder Paul Geraets. She and Paul were surfing their way around the world, bought land in Whale Bay, lived there in a caravan and then built their rammed-earth home.

While in Whale Bay they launched a business specialising in the eco-housing for which Paul is well known and which he still operates from Auckland.

Those early years in Raglan were an “idyllic lifestyle”, Jane reminisces. The pair are still mates and have a now 24-year-old son, Micah, who – like his dad – lives in Auckland. “But Micah and his partner visit me at least once a year,” Jane adds.

Jane admits she misses favourite places like the lagoon and Indicators, with its lilies growing wild and the paua she used to dive for. “But hey, Raglan comes to me now,” she says of the frequent visits to Binna Burra by friends and family.

Just last month Jane was back in town fleetingly – modelling at the Te Ao Marama Festival fashion show. She once modelled professionally in the States, Australia and New Zealand but confesses that at the age of 53 her career in the fashion world now “seems like a lifetime ago”.

Locals may have more recent recollections of a bikini-clad Jane sitting atop the odd Raglan Community Radio or Green Party float – she once stood as the Greens’ candidate for Port Waikato – at the Lions New Year’s Eve Parades. And she laughs at the memory of those appearances.

The farm and Airbnb aside, Jane’s latest passion is to become a travel writer and she’s almost completed a “very user-friendly” online course. It’s given her the confidence and skills to write for publication, she says.

“Ken and I are planning a trip to Italy and Greece this July for a family wedding, and I’m going to launch a blog called Jane Will Travel (a play of words on her last name).”

Meantime Jane keeps in touch with the goings-on in her old home town through the online Raglan Notice Board and by googling the Chronicle.

And while she feels she’s definitely put down a “taproot” in the Byron Bay hinterland, she reckons there’s no way you can ever fully “escape” Raglan.

Not that really she wants to, of course.

Blackfish documentary screening highlights plight of orca in captivity

E

nvironmental activist Peggy Oki is hosting the screening of the film Blackfish as part of her awareness campaign for Lolita, a lone orca that is held in a small aquarium at the Miami Seaquarium in the United States.

Peggy, who is from Santa Barbara in the US but lives in Raglan during the summer, is campaigning for the freedom of Lolita in a project called 16,425 Days a Slave.

Lolita has spent 45 years in captivity, and Peggy’s aim is to get 16,425 letters – the number of days in 45 years that Lolita has been held captive – from the public, pressuring Lolita’s owners for her release.

documentary film directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite. It focuses on the captivity of Tilikum, an orca, held by Seaworld, who was involved in the deaths of three people, and the consequences of keeping orcas in captivity.

Peggy, who is also behind a campaign to save Maui’s dolphins from extinction, will present her Lolita campaign to viewers and hold a Q&A after the screening.

The screening will be held at Solscape on Wednesday night at 7.45pm, and afterwards Peggy will hold a Q&A session.

She will be asking for a koha for the screening, and viewers will also be able to buy a curry at Solscape’s curry night (6pm-9pm).

New 'Plastic Bag Free' project seeks feedback from community hen you hear the phrase ‘no more plastic W shopping bags’, what’s the first thought that comes to mind?

That’s what the Raglan Chamber of Commerce, Xtreme Zero Waste and the Whaingaroa Enviroment Centre (WEC) want to know.

These three local organisations have teamed up to embark on a project to brand Whaingaroa-Raglan as a ‘Plastic Shopping Bag Free’ community. Plastic is a dangerous form of environmental pollution, and their aim is for our community to do our part in stemming the huge amount of plastic entering our oceans; which also strengthens our reputation as an environmentally conscious town to live in and visit.

The goal is to have 80% of the businesses in WhaingaroaRaglan plastic bag free by 2017, and 100% of the businesses plastic bag free as soon as possible thereafter.

There is a sub-committee working diligently to collect feedback from businesses and the community, so that research can be done for viable, affordable solutions for everyone.

‘Raglan by the Sea’ is a familiar tune and phrase. But what does it mean to be ‘by the sea’? By becoming a ‘plastic shopping bag free’ community, we have the opportunity to make a difference and to be an example for visitors near and far–taking conscious steps to do what we can to create a sustainable environment for everyone.

There will be a community survey available online via the Plastic Bag Free Raglan Facebook page from Friday 11 March, as well as hard copy surveys available at WEC. Surveys will also be available at the WEC Booth at Maui 's Dolphin Day this Saturday.

The sub-committee hopes to hear feedback from as many as possible over the coming weeks.

Rachel Benn – a journalist and mother, who also has a popular food stall in the back kitchen at the Whaingaroa Creative Market.

How did you become interested in food and cooking?

I grew up in a family where everything was homemade and homegrown. My mum was an amazing recycler, gardener, dressmaker and adventurer but she worked fulltime and was not well organised in the kitchen. In the interests of eating well, my brothers, sister and I started cooking and baking from an early age.

Who are you inspired by? A foodie relative, a famous chef, a blogger?

My sister Elizabeth, who created amazing things from the very limited range of ingredients in our cupboard at home. She cooks for a living now, is still making amazing food from not much and is still giving me lots of good advice on cooking.

What’s your attitude towards food? Do you have a certain eating philosophy i.e. Vegan, Paleo or sugar free?

It has to taste good, look food, and preferably be good for you. Food made from scratch and uses local or homegrown products just tastes better and achieves all these ideals. I like to know what is in my food, (so am often found reading the labels at the supermarket) and I hate wastage. I buy in bulk, hunt for bargains and cook around what is in my cupboards at the time.

Do you follow recipes or do you wing it most of the time?

I don’t follow many recipes. If I do, it’s mostly from Annabel Langbein’s Great Food For Busy Lives cookbook.

She has great recipes using ingredients people generally have in their cupboards. This is the mark of a truly good cook – anyone can cook something tasty with expensive ingredients.

Do you have many failures in the kitchen?

Occasionally I make something awful – usually when I add too many things to the pot or lose concentration. But I have a little “kitchen witch” charm that watches over me.

Do you eat out often? If you do what do you usually go for?

No – except for Jo’s (wonderful) Takeaways! If I do go out, I order something I can’t or don’t make at home.

What is your kitchen tool you could not live without?

My food processor – I use it for so many things.

What ingredients would you bring on a desert island with you - you can only choose 3:

Lemons, garlic and salt – three wonderfully versatile ingredients that can make any desert island dish taste good!

If you had to go on Masterchef who would you partner up with?

Annabel Langbein or my sister. And wouldn’t it be great if they had a Masterchef programme with a focus on healthy and affordable meals for a change.

What’s your go-to meal when the cupboards are not well stocked? The something out of nothing meal.

A simple pasta (spaghetti or penne) with garlic, olives, some oregano from the garden and a tin of tomatoes. Quick and easy, and everyone loves it.

What do you usually take to a pot luck?

Nibbles and homemade chutneys are my specialty.

Can you share a simple recipe with our readers: Garlic and Cabbage Stir-Fry (cheap, nutritious and delicious): • Cut half a cabbage into ½-1cm slices.

• Finely chop two or three cloves of garlic.

• In a large frying pan or wok, melt a chunk of butter on a medium heat.

• Add garlic and fry for 30-60 seconds, then add the cabbage.

• Cook for about 10 minutes, turning regularly so the cabbage doesn’t burn.

• Add a dash of water if it gets too dry and put a lid on pan for the last couple of minutes to cook through.

• Add salt and pepper.

Goes well with meat or vegetarian dishes. Serves 6 or more as a side.

Registrations are now open for the Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Water Sports Day taking place on Sunday 20 March in Raglan for physically disabled New Zealanders to try surfing, waka ama and paddle boarding.

The day is hosted by the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation, as part of the Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Water Sports Programme which gives physically disabled New Zealanders the opportunity to enjoy a range of water sports at a series of events around the country this summer.

The Raglan day will take place from 9.00am – 1.00pm at two locations; surfing will be at Ngarunui Beach, Raglan while stand up paddle boarding and waka ama will be held at Kopua Domain, Marine Parade, Raglan.

The Halberg Disability Sport Foundation is working in partnership with Tokerau Beachboys, SUP Bros Paddle Boarding, Red

Paddle Co, Raglan Water Sports, Waka Ama New Zealand and the Trust Waikato Raglan Surf Life Saving Club to deliver the day.

Volunteers from those organisations, Flight Centre staff and local community members will all receive ‘Halberg No Exceptions Training’ from the Foundation. The training will give them the skills and confidence to support the participants at the event.

On the day the Flight Centre Foundation will also donate modified equipment to a local group to ensure they can continue to offer support and events for physically disabled Kiwis interested in water sports.
