While most kitesurfers are well trained and safety conscious, as in any water-sport, occasionally things go wrong and the Coastguard has been called to assist on a number of occasions. Special training sessions are even carried out by the unit to make sure that crews can safely and effectively rescue kiters in distress.

Kitesurfing design has radically changed in the past three years making it a far safer sport as the industry has matured and boomed. The growth of kiting in the past year or two can easily be seen on most days here in Raglan with 12 to 65 year olds loving Raglan’s world class spot.

Sunny Raglan attracts the crowds – but not trouble With its historic hotel lacking only a hitching post Raglan may look a little like the set of a lawless frontier town, but for the police all’s been quiet on the western front these summer holidays.

Though good weather this ChristmasNew Year has brought out big crowds, police say “calls for service” have been fewer than expected and that they made only two arrests over the peak period.

While east coast resort towns still had their troublemakers and drunken youths, police here say their only major concerns have been drinkdriving – they nabbed half a dozen motorists during the day, which they say is a worry – and drivers flouting the rules on parking about town or out at the Ngarunui Beach carpark.

Acting Sergeant Andrew Mortimore says even though Raglan’s been very busy the crowds have been generally well behaved.

The ban on liquor in public places has also worked well and holidaymakers have been “obliging” if asked to remove alcohol, he says.

And about all that’s been taking up space at the police station – apart from the 16 staff who were on duty for New Year’s Eve – is a pile of lost and found property.

It’s a similar story from other emergency services, with the fire service describing things from Christmas Day on as “very quiet” – though warning the area’s starting to dry out and that people need to be very wary of the fire danger – and Raglan St John saying their 30 medical or accident callouts since mid-December represent nothing out of the ordinary.

Raglan Coastguard president Wally Hawken similarly says there have been “no majors”.

“It’s how we like it – the education message is getting through,” he says of boaties’ vigilance.

Against that Raglan has had an extraordinarily busy few weeks, with the town and beaches regularly packed with holidaymakers and day trippers, shops and cafes reporting excellent trading and accommodation around town very hard to find.

Chamber of Commerce president Stephanie Philp says from what she’s heard businesses have had a “very busy” time of it. “The better weather this year has had a huge impact and of course the forecast is for a long, hot summer,” she says.

Information Centre manager Anthea Jackson says it was a late start to a busy season but now it’s “here with a vengeance” and it’s good to see the businesses benefitting from this summer’s fine weather. The centre makes a lot of late accommodation placements and has been stretched some days to find everyone a bed.

The busiest by far of the accommodation providers has been the Kopua Holiday Park, where co-manager Mary Clark says business has been fantastic. By last Sunday the park – which can take a whopping 1200 holidaymakers – had been “fully booked for seven or eight nights now”, though the pressure eased slightly early this week.

Meanwhile the Te Kopua whanau camping ground off Riria Kereopa Memorial Drive is describing its third summer of operation as “a great year helped by the weather” and is expecting its spacious DOC-style setup to continue to attract a steady stream of backpackers, campervanners and whanau through until April.

Further out the coast, Solscape Eco Retreat at Manu Bay – which can accommodate about 80 – was still full when the Chronicle checked on Monday but expecting its “high pressure period” to be over this week.

Xtreme ways of saving money Comedy duo coming to Raglan Happy New Year Whaingaroa. At a time when you’re probably trying to stem the cash haemorrhage from Xmas, you may like to know a few ways to organise your recycling and rubbish to save you money.

Can this item be recycled or re-used at no cost? In many cases, the answer is yes. Does this item need to go to landfill at a cost of $45 per cu/m to me? In many cases the answer is no.

If you carefully sort your load, separating recyclable and re-useable goods from rubbish (ideally recycling on top and rubbish on the bottom) BEFORE you come up to the Recycling Centre you’ll pay less. Sorting takes time and only marginal sorting can take place in the middle of a busy yard with customers waiting.

For example, wood that’s free of nails, windows and door fittings in good condition are free to drop off. Because of the time involved in de-nailing and repairing damaged products, we charge $10 per cu/m to receive low-grade stock.

Separating your wood into waste and reusable will minimise your drop off costs, saving you money.

The pair take their comedy show on a series of seven dates, from Whangamata to the Hokianga and back to Raglan in the second week of January. “ I think we might stand out in the crowd of young rock bands doing the circuit,”says Mayor Tim, “ but I don’t see why young people should have all the fun!”

McCormick and Shadbolt were veterans of the early days of summer rock festivals, McCormick having MC’ed Sweetwaters Rock festivals for three years in a row. “ Tim and I used to meet up at the various stages around the site and read poems and tell stories, “ says McCormick. “Nothing much has changed except there are lots more stories and better jokes !”

The duo are very active on the Corporate speaking circuit during the year but admit to the thrill of doing a daily show on the road at the height of summer.

“This year we are doing shows at two Golf Clubs - Omaha beach and The Peninsular at Orewa.

That’s a first and who knows it may lead to a whole circuit of Golf Clubs in the same way that bands have started a circuit of churches.”

It Probably Won’t Heal In Time

The Junior Division was a battle of three predominantly shortboard surfers versus 2012 Tour Champion local Sam Poulter and it was Mount Maunganui surfer Josh Taylor that took the honours with some exemplary footwork to score 15.67 out of 20 points. Defending Tour champion Sam placed third after incurring an interference and Caleb Braithwaite (Whaka) finished in fourth place.

The light foot-work of Mischa Davis (Piha) saw her become the third surfer of the event to defend their title. Davis finished with a 12.53 point heat total in a close battle with runner up Belinda Goodwin from Raglan who scored 11.13 points.

Michael Thomson from Raglan defended his title in the Over 50 Longboard defeating David Storck in a close final.

Daniel Kereopa was another local surfer to defend his title in the Stand Up Paddleboard Division. He was too sharp for his opponents in the small conditions, racking up turn after turn on the best waves of the final. In challenging conditions he managed to score 14.67 out of 20 to beat Shayne Baxter (Chch) who placed runner up. The second local of the final, Armie Armstrong (Rag) placed third ahead of Karl Arsene (WGM).

Christmas in the park a long-time family affair Tucked down a lane at the back of Kopua Holiday Park – with tables set beneath gazebos – more than 50 members of one big, happy family ranging in age from 10 months to 70-something met last month for Christmas dinner.

Half of them were visiting from Auckland, Whakatane and Rotorua. The others were already there, camping – in for the long haul.

It was a large gathering this year even by their standards, admit Ian and Thais Butler, but they wouldn’t have it any other way. In fact the Auckland family’s celebrated Christmas at Kopua for 46 years now.

“Everybody comes here – this is (like) our home,” Thais told the Chronicle last week before some of their extended family packed up camp and headed home after the holiday break. She and Ian were staying on awhile, as they do.

And come Auckland Anniversary Weekend at the end of the month, they’ll be back to their caravan parked on site yearround. They’ll be there again at Easter, Labour Weekend and lots of the weekends in between, continuing the long family tradition of camping at Kopua.

Thais’s brother Doug Green and his wife Doreen – whose Christmas cake is, by unanimous decision, the family specialty – camp there too. Like those of Ian and Thais,

They’re squeezed in all over the large campground and get together whenever they can.

It’s not uncommon for Ian – the patriarch at 73 – to make 30-plus slices of toast for nieces and nephews, happily sent in his direction for breakfast by grateful parents.

And one thing’s for sure – he’s had plenty of practice.

His daughter Shellee, who was camped in her caravan a stone’s throw from theirs and was minding her own grandchildren when the Chronicle called, remembers “when we were young” and there was no power on site.

Those were the days of four big tins of baked beans and a loaf of bread for breakfast, she says, all made over at the cookhouse by Dad for their family of five.

“And we’d go to the cookhouse to get our milk,” she remembers.

“The milkman was there morning and night and brought in nice, fresh juice too.”

There were lots of families here like this though, Shellee adds. She’s grown up since babyhood with a neighbouring camper who’s also been coming to Kopua year in, year out over generations.

But the memories go back much further for Shellee’s mum Thais, who says the divvy was a dirt road when she first came

to Raglan to camp with her own parents and grandparents.

A grader pulled vehicles up and over the divvy when it was raining, she recalls, and haybales were brought out for beds.

Lupins had to be cleared from the chosen camping spot before the big army tent could even be erected.

“We’ve seen a lot of changes,” says Thais, remembering old photos showing tents and caravans scattered haphazardly over what is now the campground’s tarseal roads.

As her brother Doug says, six generations of them – the Green family from Frankton – have been camping at Kopua since just after the war when they progressed here

from Whale Bay where longtime locals’, the late Sam Kereopa and Eva Rickard, charged a small fee for campers to set up tents on their whanau land.

“And there’s four generations here now (this year),” Doug adds proudly, remembering some great singing by the Kereopas and Rickards back in the day. “They were beautiful singers.”

He reckons the Green and Butler families will all be back again next Christmas. Ian agrees.

“It’s a proper family camp,” he says, “safe for kids and with security around.”

“It’s lovely,” adds Shellee, cherishing a lifetime of camping memories at Kopua.

Japanese Pranksters bring Space Rock to the Yotty With a penchant for everything colourful and quirky, Japanese exports usually seem to lean toward the brighter side of life. So it comes as no surprise that Japanese space-rock band Marble Sheep have been described as “ Merry Pranksters of the 21st Century.”

Founded in 1987 by Ken Matsutani (vocals), the four-piece band originally called Marble Sheep & The Run Down Sun’s Children passed through many styles of psychadelia like minimal music, heavy rock and S.F. jam psych.

After several years of rest they’ve now been reborn as Marble Sheep, transformed into a straighter and stronger group with their sound developing into space-rock.

A fixture on the Japanese rock scene since their early days, the name Marble Sheep is highly esteemed overseas as well. With record company deals in Germany, UK and Finland, they have also played live shows in the US and Europe.

Visiting NZ for the first time, Marble Sheep will be bringing their special blend of merry and energetic live performances to the YOT Club next Thursday 19th

January so don’t miss out!

This Friday 11th at the YOT Club will also see the return of the Julian Temple Band. Once described as “like the loudest blues band in the world whispering,” this will

Scooters are a go It seems two wheelers are the way to go this summer, with tourists spoilt for choice between two motor scooter hire businesses now operating from Raglan West within a stone’s throw of each other.

Not that there’s any animosity, though. Both Dave Rawley of Scooter Rentals and Helen Rowling of Scooter Hire – who have just six 50cc scooters between them – reckon there’s plenty of room for their competing businesses in town, and personally attest to the fact that the simple mode of transport puts a smile on people’s faces.

Feedback’s been “tremendous”, says Helen. “People are all over town (on their scooters) like a rash!”

Helen also works on the reception desk at Kopua Holiday Park, and told the Chronicle of a woman and her seven-year-old daughter from the campground having had a fantastic time happily zipping between the beach, the circus and everywhere else during their recent Raglan stay.

“It’s an inexpensive option to have some fun and (provides) another level of activities here,” she insists.

Holidaymakers have been happy to go as far afield as Bridal Veil Falls on their mean machines, adds Robbie Duthie who owns the other scooter business managed day-to-day from friend Dave’s place on Karekare Avenue.

Business was “just taking off” through word of mouth, Robbie told the Chronicle before Christmas, while Dave’s since confirmed the scooters are out every day.

And everyone reiterates what a great time they’ve had, says Dave. “They get a smile out of it.”

It’s been a few summers since former local Loretta Laxon, who about the same time also ran Raglan West Store, first operated a scooter hire business in town with a trendy pastel-coloured fleet.

Helen, who coincidentally also served time more recently running Raglan West Store, liked Loretta’s idea of a scooter hire business and in fact set out last June to start one up again in town. The initial plan, she says, was to buy an $18,000, 10-scooter business from down country – but then she decided against investing so much in a venture without proven profitability.

But Helen’s now keen to invest a little more and maybe increase her fleet by one or two scooters.

The snapper are all in close. The charter boat was anchored north of Mussel Rock in 20m and binning up.

We were, on one of those days, at the 29m mark off Carters Beach, top snapper was 14lbs. Renee caught two 10lb fish and the rest were of size. We caught only a few gurnard - but other boats in closer caught few snapper but heaps of gurnard. That’s life.

Tuna, north of the Bar, skippies were popping at the 20m mark off shore, with a local catching club record Albacore at the 50m. Also the first Marlin of the season was hooked up and dropped further out. There were huge schools of bait fish these tuna were working through. Mass bridges swim will help heat pool

The Raglan community is being urged to take the plunge en masse in a “bridge to bridge” swim event in autumn – so the newly constituted Raglan Swimming Club can in turn splash out on a heater for the Area school pool.

The novel fundraiser is scheduled for Saturday April 14 and there’ll be swims over distances varying from 300 metres up to two kilometres as the club, which became “official” only last month when it registered as an incorporated society, sets out to raise the $25,000 it estimates will be needed to heat the 22-metre pool.

Participants in Raglan’s own “bridge to bridge” event, which comes the weekend after the Maui Dolphin Day also at Kopua Domain, will pay an entry fee of between $5 and $15 depending on their age and the length of the swim.

Current plans are for five events over 300m, 500m, 1, 1.5 and 2 km distances in the Kopua estuary, between the new Kopua footbridge and the Raglan West traffic bridge.

The event is being promoted as a “fun water day” and

fundraising committee member Lisa Thomson says Sports Waikato is also coming on board with various activities.

Lisa – who’s well known about town as co-organiser of multisport or endurance events such as the Karioi Classic – says the club has a really strong committee now “and this is their big fundraiser” as they pursue their immediate goal of getting the pool heated so it can be used all year round.

She herself is well aware of the pool’s limitations as during the winter months she takes her 11-year-old daughter three times a week over the divvy to the heated St Paul’s Collegiate facilities.

Lisa emphasises that Raglan Area School and principal Malcolm Cox are very supportive of getting the pool heated and used more as a public amenity.

While the project is being spearheaded by club president Megan Wood – who among other things is looking into various funding sources – there’s also strong backing from the likes of area school staff Gabrielle Williams and Hinemoa Rossi, surf lifesaving stalwart Anne Snowden and Steve Threadgold of Swim

Support, who’s again been running a holiday programme at the pool teaching local youngsters how to swim.

Lisa adds the next focus, after installing a pool heater, will be to have a shed built over the pool to keep out the wild west coast winds.

The ultimate aim is to have the pool used as a public swimming pool, though this brings public liability issues that will have to be worked through with the school. With a school pool there are also limitations on what external funding can be accessed, and it may be that the pool comes under the umbrella of the swimming club.

Lisa says the Waikato District Council meantime is doing a feasibility study on the school pool becoming a public one and describes ward councillor Clint Baddeley as also “very supportive” of the moves.

Raglan smoked fish challenge The Fishing Section of The Raglan Club Inc has announced that Easter Sunday 31st March will be the Raglan Smoked Fish Challenge. Smokem Raglan.

Basically and to be confirmed, smoked fish will be entered, coded, placed for judging from 3.00pm till 5.30pm on that day. The celebrity judges will commence judging after 6.00pm, comment on each piece entered as they go, then they will go into recess

to evaluate each entry and to nominate the winner.

The winner will be announced, judges decision will be final, as sparks could fly. Then those attending will be able to taste pieces as submitted.

A large trophy is already being locally designed and after approval being made for this contest. All fish smoked must be local, ie: kahawai, mullet, snapper, trevally, kingfish, porae etc and therefore salmon will be excluded.

A contestant is already

making their chutney for their entry. If you are prepared to push the boundaries in the preparation for this contest, not only could you win this fine trophy for one year, but we could put on the Bow Street Ticker Tape Parade just for you.
