Celebrated Maori author makes surprise Word Café appearance

magine your surprise when the “dream” guest who’s declined an invitation to your event turns up after all – and from miles away.

Organisers’ jaws dropped last weekend at Raglan’s biennial Word Cafe when pioneering Māori novelist Witi Ihimaera paid an unexpected visit to the Saturday morning sessions at Raglan Town Hall.

“I just came along for the ride,” he told an intrigued audience at the start of the second session as he made an impromptu introduction of one of the guest speakers – his cousin, Haare Williams, a poet, painter, scriptwriter and lyricist whose collaborative book with photographer Michael Krzanich has made waves overseas.

“I had nothing to do at five o’clock this morning,” Witi elaborated on his aboutturn. “Also my daughter and her child, my mokopuna, are considering living here so I thought I’d suss you all out and see if it (Raglan) is okay.”

The 73 year old said he was delighted to be in the company of writers, acknowledging the three local authors – Bernadette Gavin, Jacqui McRae and Stephanie Philp – who featured in the morning’s first session about books in the making.

“I wrote my first short story at 11 … when it was raining and we had to stay inside and write,” he reminisced of his school days.

He praised the new photo book, ‘Someone’s Mana’, revealing he’d put Haare and Michael in touch with each other early last year for the collaboration. “Haare is the physical embodiment of mana,” he said.

Witi Ihimaera has many short stories or novels to his name, among them ‘Tangi’, ‘Pounamu, Pounamu’ and ‘The Whale Rider’, the book which spawned the film.

Ironically, even without the drawcard of a household name, Raglan’s third readers and writers festival was bound to be a success in terms of numbers well before the town hall doors opened.

Pre-sales of 60-odd weekend passes were more than triple those at the last event two years ago, revealed local writer Sarah Johnson who was one of seven organisers behind the event. Added to that were the many tickets sold singly for the dozen or so Word Café sessions.

The town hall – the sole Word Café venue – was decorated with bunting made from old book pages, with couches, cushions, throws and beanbags adding an air of intimacy. More formal seating was arranged in a semicircle in front of guest speakers, while drinks and nibbles were provided next door in the supper room.

Iconic Hamilton bookstore Browsers also manned a sales table throughout the event, and noted that people showed renewed interest in buying titles after they had heard “the story behind the story”.

Friday night’s official welcome was followed by a spoken poetry showcase which had some in the audience clicking their fingers in appreciation, then it was

back-to-back book talk sessions from Saturday morning through to Sunday afternoon with the announcement of and readings by winners of the writing competition.

Saturday’s daytime sessions included talks from graphic novelist Sarah Laing, internationally bestselling author Nalini Singh and children’s authors Tina Matthews and Maria Gill.

Then about 100 packed into the hall for the evening extravaganza with media personality and author Karyn Hay, and poet and short story writer Tracey Slaughter, who entertained and read excerpts from their latest works.

Sunday’s schedule featured a sellout writing workshop with author Jacqui McRae, poetry readings by Paula Green and two book launches by local authors.

The first saw Latesha Randall and Sebastian Walter – the couple behind Raglan Coconut Yoghurt – answering questions about Latesha’s inspirational guide, ‘The To-Be List’, while the other launch showcased poet and artist Wanda Barker’s novella, ‘All Her Dark Pretty Thoughts’.

“Writing for me is therapeutic,” concluded Wanda after delivering some impassioned readings from her work. At 66, she reckoned a few grey hairs and grumpiness were a small price to pay for the satisfaction of now having her book published.

“It feels like it (the book) has been with me a long time and now it’s done,” she told her audience.

Facebook posts to Raglan Notice Board were also testimony to the event’s success with Charlotte Pearsall describing the opening night as “epic” and Richard Gemmell impressed at the “fabulous” speakers.

The presenter of the awards commented on the very high standard of writing in the children’s section.

Margery Fern O’Connell, Waitetuna School principal, attended the award ceremony at the Raglan Word Café over the weekend. She said she was incredibly proud of the students.

on’t ask singer-songwriter Parabola West to explain her lyrics.

The Raglan-based musician has just released a new single, Disappear, ahead of an upcoming EP of seven songs of a “few stories I wanted to tell”, ones that “fit together in terms of my life”.

Parabola says all her songs are borne from a feeling, but she finds it incredibly hard to explain what they are about.

“You get to the point where you have to explain it and I think, man, I don’t even know what I am trying to say! None of the process makes sense, it’s not just about one thing.”

Disappear is the story of walking with someone through their addiction, and “that whole process of coming to terms that there is a problem, and getting through it is harder than the problem itself”.

Parabola borrows and steals from moments in her and others’ lives to “fit in wherever” in her song storytelling.

It’s okay if people make assumptions about the stories she’s telling, she says, or if they wonder what or whom they are about.

“It's more awkward when they want it to be about them and it’s not – I've had that. But often it’s about a bunch of feelings and stories mixed into one song.”

The EP, call Purity of Weakness, is due to be released in September after a successful crowdfunding campaign in 2016.

Parabola says she’s really pleased with how the album has turned out.

“I know a song is ready when listening to it makes me feel like I did when writing it, and I believe I have achieved that with every song on this EP.” Purity of Weakness includes Parabola’s acclaimed single, Fire, which was released in October 2015 after she won a NZ on Air wildcard $10,000 recording grant based on a public vote.

The video to the song was shot on her and husband David’s 8-acre block in Maungatawhiri Rd where they live in “off-grid glam”.

Parabola, who will be playing some of her new songs at a gig at Nivara Lounge in Hamilton on Friday next week, says her style of music draws inspiration from Nordic folk roots, electronica, and organic sounds.

Her songs are not what she would call commercial radio fodder.

Rather than trying to become a household name, being something for everyone, Parabola says she concentrating on “finding my people” and focusing on them.

“I wouldn’t suit someone who likes bubblegum pop.

“I think my demographic is 28 and up, people who have loved a little bit and who aren’t relating to musicians on the radio about who is hooking up in the club or the size of your butt.”

The songs run much deeper and have more feeling – such as “how do you cope when someone you love is losing their shit”, or coming to terms with abuse, or wondering “the final destination of your soul”.

But there is also levity in her new EP, says the lover of shoes and French bulldogs, and the mix is deliberate.

“I don’t want too many sad songs or to sound really schizophrenic.”

In the end, for her, it’s about creating beautiful music to be heard, and yes, she does want everyone – even if it doesn’t turn out to be their thing – to buy her album or download the single.

“It can’t be overstated that now in the music industry that if you want independent voices to create music you have to support them. To download the single is like two dollars … it’s taking that extra step to support the craft of independent music.”

Parabola is looking forward to taking her new music on the road, including a gig in Raglan, when she releases her EP. Her new show will be unlike her previous live performances, which was “on the piano doing singersongwriter stuff”, and include the live mixing of audios and visuals.

“I want to present my songs in a way that is thoughtful and beautiful … I want to make it something I would like to go to.”

Of the 29 drink-drivers he picked up, 17 were convicted and the rest got a $200 fine and 50 demerit points.

Drink drivers get a conviction if their breath test measures greater than 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath. The limit to drive is 250mcg.

Mr Ryburn says the most inebriated driver he stopped was in Ohautira Rd on a Sunday afternoon.

“He had drunk 12 stubbies of Steinlager and blew 1162 – that’s the highest I have ever processed.”

Many of the drink drivers were in the medium to high range over the limit, he says.

“I have had three to four people blow over 1000 which is pretty intoxicated.”

Mr Ryburn has been targeting rural Raglan areas for drink drivers.

“It’s the old cliché – rural people die on rural roads.”

He says he visited the Te Mata Club after the rugby on Saturday night and the first person he stopped was drunk.

He took him to the police station for processing, by which time the club had been alerted “there was a cop KNOW HOW MUCH ALCOHOL out there”, thenDRINKING pulled up a car on Ruapuke Rd “and he YOU’RE REALLY was pissed as well”.

Mr Ryburn says he has attended a few serious car accidents in rural Raglan due to drink driving.

In Wainui Rd, a “young fellow” had flipped his car on its roof.

“Things like that, there is no need for it.

Mr Ryburn says one of the worst jobs he has had was dealing with the fallout from the Boxing Day crash in Raglan in 2015 that killed Raglan teen Ra Smith.

“That really affected this community.

“The time will come when there is another fatality.

“No one wants a member of their family to die as a result of a drink-driver or having been a drink-driver themselves.”

Prosecuting Sergeant Mark Frost says there is no excuse to drink drive.

“The old saying goes if don’t plan then you fail to plan.”

“Use the shuttles provided by the bars, use the Raglan shuttle, arrange a ride. Raglan is a small so why not walk?”

aglan police will be increasing the number of check points in town and rural areas, with the community being told to buck up its ideas regarding drink-driving.

Constable Gary Ryburn says a huge number of drinkdriving files are hitting the police prosecutor’s desk in Hamilton and they have had enough.

“There is an issue here and the community needs to buck up its ideas. Prosecution wants it to be brought to the community’s attention that this behaviour is not good enough. We are going to be policing drink-driving harder and have more check points.”

In the seven months that Mr Ryburn has worked in Raglan, he says he has picked up 29 people for drink driving.

“And that is just me. How many people are drinkdriving? Friggin’ heaps.”

Plastic Bag Free Raglan

The plastic bottles, bags and takeaway containers that we use just for a few minutes use a material that is designed to last forever.

These plastics: • break up, not break down – becoming permanent pollution • are mostly downcycled (made into low grade product for just one more use) or sent to landfill • ‘escape’ from bins, trucks, events etc. to become ‘accidental litter’ • end up in waterways and the ocean – where scientists predict there will be more tonnes of plastic than tonnes of fish by 2050 • transfer to the food chain – carrying pollutants with them • increase our eco-footprint – plastic manufacturing consumes 6% of the world’s fossil fuels

Plastic Packaging Facts Let’s have a think about our packaging: • Each New Zealander consumes approximately 31kg of plastic packaging per year and recycles just 5.58kg • 25 – 30% of PET (used soft drink bottles) and HDPE (used in milk bottles) packaging produced in New Zealand is recovered • New Zealand’s plastic package recycling rate is 18% • Recycling PET bottles saves 84% of the energy it takes to make PET bottles from raw materials • XZW recycles around 2.5 tonnes of plastic per month!

• Black milk bottles are recycled into farm irrigation piping at Astron Plastics in Auckland • PET coloured plastics often get recycled into household insulation • Other plastics are exported to Asia where they are then recycled However, packaged water is now seen as an essential by many, and one million plastic bottles are produced every minute worldwide.

More than 480 billion plastic drinking bottles were sold in 2016 across the world, up from about 300 billion a decade ago. If placed end to end, they would extend more than halfway to the sun.

By 2021 this number will increase to 583.3 billion, according to the most up-to-date estimates from Euromonitor International’s global packaging trends report.

One way we can help to lower this number is by using a reusable drink bottle!
