Fatbergs in Waikato district pipes too I ts size has sent shockwaves around the world and while the Waikato district can’t claim anything quite as large, fatbergs have also been plaguing our pipes for years.

International media coverage of a 250-metre long, 130-tonne ‘fatberg’ blocking a London sewer pipe went viral on social media last month, but general manager service delivery Tim Harty says pipes are often blocked by fatbergs across the Waikato district too. “With the huge fatberg in the news last month it’s timely to remind our residents that in 2016/17, 81 per cent of wastewater overflows across the district were caused by things like wipes, sanitary hygiene products such has pads and tampons, fats, oils and grease, cotton buds, nappies and rags. “Waikato district residents have told us the number of wastewater overflows that have occurred in recent times is unacceptable. In response to this Council is undertaking a range of

work, including a district-wide public education programme which is aimed to let people know what can and can’t be put down the loo and kitchen sink,” Mr Harty says. The message we need to get across to our residents is easy - pee, poo and (toilet) paper, or the three P’s, are the only things that should go down the loo. Everyone also needs to think while at the sink, Mr Harty says. Note: A ‘fatberg’ is a word used to describe a build-up of hard fats and oils which bind with other problem items in the wastewater system like wet wipes, sanitary pads and nappies and then create a solid mass. This build-up can block the pipe system which then causes overflows and damage to pumping equipment. Fats, oils and grease should be left to cool and disposed of, not tipped down the kitchen sink hot to then cool in the pipes. WDC

Raglan surfer turned ‘funny guy’ says on-screen wedding no joke

F

Luke Cederman features in TV Three's Married At First Sight.

ormer Raglan pro surfer Luke Cederman may be better known around town these days for posting hilarious online clips but insists he’s deadly serious about giving his marriage – which screened on primetime television last weekend – a good go. And despite joking his way through his wedding to Lacey Swanepoel on the first episode of TV Three’s ‘Married at First Sight NZ’ series last Sunday night, the 34 year old reckons it all went pretty well. Sure it was “different”, he told the Chronicle of meeting his bride for the first time at the altar. “But that’s an understatement I guess.” The wedding – at a venue in Bombay, South Auckland – was also a lot of fun, he added. “I felt like I handled it pretty well and enjoyed myself.” Luke is one of 12 singles, chosen from more than 4000 applicants looking to find

true love, who are matched up in the new series. He and Lacey were the first pairing to get legally hitched on screen during the six-week social experiment in which psychology expert Dr Pani Farvid and relationship counsellor Tony Jones “guide the journey that is marriage”. Luke told the Chronicle that, having experienced a few failed relationships, he saw his participation in the reality series as an opportunity to be matched successfully by qualified experts. “I realise I am making a massive commitment,” he said. He genuinely wanted to find someone to spend the rest of his life with, and was just hoping his match would want to do the same. So far so good. Quizzed on TVNZ 1’s ‘Breakfast’ programme on Monday morning – just 12 or so hours after his wedding was screened, but in reality several weeks after the big event – Luke confirmed “we got each other, we understood each other”.

Not that he was divulging anything more. “I am a gentleman,” insisted the bearded, beanie-wearing Luke with an impish grin. And the beard “doesn’t matter”, he added – which is just as well as 30-year-old Lacey, a business consultant in Wellington, had made clear before meeting Luke at the altar she wasn’t keen on her ideal man having one but that it “can always be shaved (off)”. Luke – who lives in Auckland but returns to his hometown whenever possible – told the Chronicle he definitely had no regrets about his very public wedding on a show which bares all the highs and lows as couples progress from wedding to honeymoon to visiting the in-laws and married life. “It’s been amazing,” he said of the experience. “Surreal is the best way to describe it.” Although obviously a bit nervous on his wedding day the laid-back Luke reckoned he generally didn’t believe in stress. He revealed that, before filming for the show began, he’d quit his job as a warehouse manager in Auckland to go walking 650 kilometres through the south of France with his father Brent. “That sorted me out,” he said of the hum-drum state he’d been stuck in at the time. Luke – who’s variously described in programme publicity material as something of a funny guy and comedian – has earned quite a reputation in Raglan for his offthe-wall surf reports and other clips posted online. That includes a fake application for ‘The Bachelor’ television series which perhaps predetermined the real thing for ‘Marriage at First Sight’. He passed ‘The Bachelor’ clip off as just an entertaining Saturday activity, whereas with ‘The Raglan Surf Report’ he simply liked to inform people of surf culture in a light-hearted kind of way. Then what about the recent piece on a supposedly deadly ocean-dwelling creature that was actually a plastic bag washed ashore on the rocks? ”I like to dabble in a few social issues,” he laughed. But Luke made clear nothing matched getting hitched on television. “Honestly this is one of the craziest things I’ve ever done!” Edith Symes

School van creates new opportunities

W

aitetuna School has recently purchased its own school van.

“The van is very useful for outdoor

education trips, sports events and day trips related to our core focus learning” says Principal Margery O’Connell. “It has been great to use for the recent inter-school

speech competition, our Raglan netball tournament and rehearsals for our upcoming school production at Raglan Town Hall this term. With both parents often at work, finding enough cars to transport children can be very challenging. Having our own school van creates opportunities and provides more versatility for student learning.” The van seats up to eleven students and also provides transport from Raglan to Waitetuna School on a daily basis. The Principal explains, “this is a nice bonding time for students going to and from school each day and often students sing waiata,” Sofia says, “I get to talk to my friends about the day,” and Miia adds, “I like playing games like I Spy.” There are three seats currently available for Raglan children, if you are interested in enrolling your child at Waitetuna School. Nearly 50 years combined service for local Trade Aid volunteers

Trade Aid volunteers Jaime Witters, Ann Kingsbury and Len Swann combine nearly 50 years volunteering between them.

of love has turned into nearly 50 years’ Alabour service for three volunteers at Trade Aid Whāingaroa/ Raglan.

Ann Kingsbury, Len Swann and Jaime Witters come from both ends of the age spectrum – Ann and Len are both in their 70s and Jaime at 10 is the youngest volunteer.

TeKohaoHealth

With around 22 years at the fair trade helm, Ann and Len still work at the shop and are both trustees. Ann - who first started volunteering in 1995 - shoulder-

tapped her cousin Len to do the same not long after she began. The shop was half it’s current size and one of Ann’s first jobs was repainting the interior. Having given up physical work due to a farm accident, Len was pleased to find a role for himself at the shop and by 2000 he also took on the treasurer’s job at a time when the shop was in financial strife. “I wasn’t sure the shop was going to survive,” he says. But under Len’s strict fiscal management the shop was making a healthy turnover two year’s on. Raglan Area School student Jaime Witters started volunteering when she first moved to Raglan as an eight-year-old under the guidance of relative and former Trade Aid manager Lisa Thomson. She comes in for a couple of hours a week and vacuums, dusts, stocks shelves and prices goods. “I wanted to do something to help and it was a good way to meet people,” Jaime says. The shop itself sprang to life in 1989 and Ann says Māori land rights activist Eva Rickard was the first in the area to dabble in Trade

Aid products, selling the fair trade coffee from her Māori arts shop Waka Huia in Wainui Rd. “They (Trade Aid NZ) would be very unlikely to start up a shop nowadays in a small town like Raglan,” she says. Shop manager Judy Sutherland says Trade Aid is a social enterprise and the contribution voulunteers make helps to support Trade Aid’s work with the many talented producers around the world. “We would love to hear from people who are interested in volunteering in the shop,” she says. “Especially with the busy summer period coming up we have plenty of interesting jobs for volunteers to do.” Ann, Len and Jaime all say the best thing about volunteering in the shop is meeting new people from all around the world. “And, it’s lovely to be surrounded by such wonderful products,” Ann adds. For more information about volunteering at Trade Aid pop into the shop on Bow St or phone 07 825 7105. Janine Jackson

Te Mata School welcomes life-saving device. Back from left - Peter Storey, Cooper Woolston, 13, Ava Duthie, 5, Poppy Campbell-Briant, 13, acting principal Linda Holmes and front Harlow Bird and Mila Duthie, both 5.

A

lucky break for a truck driver who had a heart attack outside Te Mata School has led to three new defibrillators being donated to Te Mata, Te Uku and Waitetuna. Thankfully, one of the first responders to the incident was a local resident who had recently updated her first aid certificate and the second to arrive at the scene was a Meridian Energy employee with a portable defibrillator in his company vehicle. The pair were able to save the truck driver’s life while waiting for an ambulance and the Westpac Helicopter to arrive. Without this timely assistance and lifesaving equipment, this incident may have had a different ending.

It was this incident that led the Raglan Community Charitable Trust to purchase the portable Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) located at Te Mata, Te Uku and Waitetuna schools. Raglan Community Charitable Trust chairman Peter Storey says it was an easy funding decision for the trust (formerly the Raglan Hospital Trust). “It was a no brainer to fund this life saving equipment. The local schools have agreed to locate the AEDs on school grounds and they will be in specialised cabinets for easy access. The AEDs are easy to use, you just turn them on and follow the instructions.” The location of the community AEDs will be shared on a free AED app that can

easily be downloaded to a smartphone. “The app is really easy to use, just type in a location and it will show you where all the AEDs are located in that area,” Peter says. In addition to the three new defibrillator sites there are eight located in Raglan at Camp Raglan, 578 Wainui Road, Raglan Surf Life Saving Club, Ngarunui Beach Rd, Raglan Kopua Holiday Park - Office/ Barrier Arm, 61 Marine Parade, St John Ambulance Raglan, 11 Wainui Rd, Raglan Police, 3 Wi Neera St, Raglan Club Inc By bar above fire hose cabinet, 22 Bow Street, Raglan West Coast Health Centre, 12 Wallis St and Raglan Coastguard Gallagher Base, Raglan Wharf, 100 Wallis St. Janine Jackson

Irma in Peru pictured holding the maca that grows in the area.

E

ver wanted to know more about maca? Maca is one of the world’s most unique and powerful medicinal superfoods. It only grows above 3800m in the small region of Junin, Peru.

As a medicine, it has been at the centre of Inca culture, history and spirituality for over 2000 years. Its traditional uses have been for the treatment of mental health, hormone balance, menopause, PMS, fatigue, fertility, sexual dysfunction, libido, pain, chronic fatigue and

cancer. Maca is ideal for hormonal, endocrine, mental health, stress and fatigue related conditions. Hosted by local Raglan wellness coach Irma Schutte - The A-Z of Maca event will cover important topics with guest speakers. Speakers Dr Corin Storkey and Sally Huapaya are a young New Zealand and Peruvian couple who live and work part-time in Peru with their maca farmer and community and run a volunteer program that brings kiwis to Peru to experience life in a remote Andean community. Their maca research program studies the bioactive chemicals in maca and recent findings have begun to unlock the secrets behind it's mode of action. Hear about the use of maca as a medicine, the exploitation of the people who produce it, the realities of the superfood trade and real life stories of the amazing healing power it possesses. Topics Discussed: • The history and anthropology of Incan maca farming • Farm to Table maca – from the soil to your plate • The biochemistry of maca – relating the tradition with the scientific research • The application of maca as a therapeutic • Irma's story with maca • The reality of superfood farming and farmer • The impact of global consumerism on the community • Seleno Health’s social responsibility programs • Volunteering opportunities in Peru • What you can do to make a difference WHEN: TUESDAY 10 OCTOBER 2017 WHERE: RAGLAN OLD SCHOOL ART CENTRE TIME: 5:30PM ENTRANCE: FREE For more details contact Irma Schutte 0278902040 hello@irmaschutte.com

t’s been a busy few months for Justine Quarrell and Keith Jarmey. The couple behind Raglan Watersports, Raglan Scenic Tours and Raglan Shuttle Service recently moved from 5a Bankart Street to 7a Main Road, on the corner of East Street. Perfectly positioned to catch the eye of visitors arriving in town, the new location offers easy access and plenty of parking. Give us a recap of the different services you provide. We bought Raglan Scenic Tours and Raglan Shuttle Service back in 2009. These businesses have been running since 2002, making them the longest established shuttle businesses in Raglan. We run sightseeing tours around Raglan and further afield, while Raglan Shuttle Service provides stress-free transportation to and from airports, bus and train stations.

What does Raglan Watersports offer? Fun on and off the water. We can set you up with paddleboard and kayak hire, take you on a guided tour around the harbour, introduce you to kiteboarding, or provide bikes and transport to a variety of biking routes. Schools, corporates and groups hire us for activity days and teambuilding events (our super-sized XLRide paddleboard is especially popular with groups), and we also run paddleboard and kayak tours along the Waikato River. How can people get in touch? You’ll find full details about our tours, activities and shuttle services on our websites: www.raglanwatersports. co.nz & www.raglanscenictours.co.nz. Alternatively, give us a call on 07 825 0507, email admin@raglanwatersports. co.nz, or stop by 7a Main Road. We are a WorkSafe accredited watersports operator, and our paddleboarding school is approved by Surfing New Zealand.

t’s a long way from Northern Ireland, but Dawn and Victor Macfarlane are making Raglan their home and workplace.

Exchanging lough life for surf and sand, the couple from Killinchy, a small village nestled on the Stranford Lough - a lake where portions of the Game of Thrones was filmed – have bought the former Raglan Social Club. Now named The Pantry, Dawn says changes are afoot but they are eager to find out the locals’ favourites and introduce a slice of Ireland into the menu. “We’ll not break what’s not broken,” she says. The vegan salads lovingly crafted by Ang Sowerby are a given and the couple say Ang

Over the next few months the couple will introduce some specials to test the waters and are looking forward to sharing their favourite Irish bread recipes. “We want people to come in and say hello,” Dawn says. “You’ll get a nice friendly welcome.” Janine Jackson

If you have been waiting for a lifestyle block with the convenience of NO land or building covenants to restrict your plans, then this really is a fantastic option! Why not relocate a character villa or classic bungalow, build an earthship or container home. With a total area of 15985m2 (3.95 acres), this elevated property has flat to gently rolling ‘hay country’ contour and is awaiting your home development ideas and plantings. For those that work in Hamilton it’s an approx. 25 min. drive to the city fringe with the beaches and cafes of seaside Raglan only a short 5 min. drive away giving you the best of both worlds..
