Further, on page 20 of the consultation document the Auditor General has signed off on WDC’s proposals, meaning the checks and balances are in place. So, I will happily pay my new rates.

Having said that, I recognise that not everyone holds this view or can afford the increase. If you are such a person or household can I urge you to a) read the consultation document that you will have received in the mail and b) make a submission by Monday 16th April. After all, if 33% of ratepayers, say, complained about the rate increase WDC might have to re-consider their proposals.

Rangitahi Peninsula update

T

he Rangitahi Team has put together the following progress update for the Raglan community with regards to the project at present.

The Rangitahi Peninsula is a five-minute drive from the Raglan township. Just look left as you drive over the one-way bridge and you will see the construction of the new bridge and subdivision taking place.

The first stage of the development consists of 88 residential lots and 4 ‘mixeduse’ lots zoned for commercial, community and residential development. There will be a small community hub developed here to provide some basic services such as a café and boutique shop and office spaces. The community hub will adjoin a public park and access to Rangitahi walking tracks around the peninsula. It will essentially be the heart of the Rangitahi peninsula community. The vision for this area is to become another character place outside of the Raglan township, just like the Raglan

wharf is, providing community vibrancy.

The over-arching vision for Rangitahi is to encompass various architectural elements while also encouraging bio-diversity in our growing community. We have put together a design guideline for this purpose and will be approving all house and landscaping plans on the peninsula.

Construction of the subdivision has an anticipated completed date of November 2018, with titles expected for issue in February 2019. This is when purchasers in Stage One will be able to start building their homes. Pemberton Civil are responsible for the construction of roads and services within the peninsula. The sections on the peninsula are serviced with power, water, fiber optic cable and wastewater to the boundary. The infrastructure has been designed and engineered with special consideration given to the materials used, as well as a strong focus on environmental factors. i.e. the wastewater from Rangitahi will be pumped from the peninsula straight to the Raglan treatment facility on Wainui

Road via new standalone pipes, which will be installed this year. The power on the peninsula will be underground. Any power lines you see currently will be removed during construction.

The Rangitahi Peninsula will be accessible to all in 2019 via the Rangitahi bridge at the end of Opotoru Road. The bridge construction is on track to be complete in September this year. It is a two-lane bridge with a footpath and parking at one end, with community access to the water for swimmers, kayakers and paddleboarders.

Opotoru Road is also going to be upgraded to a two-lane road with a footpath and street lighting. These works are due to begin shortly. The intersection between Opotoru Road and Wainui Road has been re-designed with a median strip for turning vehicles and a road crossing by the Raglan West store. The parking directly in front of the Raglan west store will be re-designed into parallel parks and additional on-street parking will be added to Tahuna Avenue.

In addition, Stage Two of the development was released in February this year. Stage Two comprises 28 residential lots, including a number of waterfront lots.

Tarot Talk

Big Raglan motel up for sale after 12 years as dual-family business

Brent outside the motel thats been the couples' primary livlihood the past 12 years.

R

aglan’s largest and most central motel in town is on the market for $4.7 million, signalling the end of an era for longtime locals and business partners Brent Cederman and Andy White.

But 68-year-old Brent, who like Andy describes himself as a very private person, sees the impending sale as no big news and says simply that it’s time to do “different things”.

The 24-unit complex – which also has a well-used conference room, a fully licensed bar and a kitchen for motel breakfasts – was purchased jointly 12 years ago by Brent and wife Diane together with Andy and his late wife Maryann.

The two-storey motel was built on the 2579m2 Bankart Street site by then Huntly farmers Ray and Sheryl Ker. They lived on site and ran the motel for three years, selling to the Cedermans and Whites in 2006.

Brent and Andy, then in their 50s, were two friends both wanting a change from corporate work; Brent was in international marketing with Greens Industries and Andy with Perry Developments.

Brent says increased technology has brought about the biggest changes during

their time in the accommodation industry.

“We used to write room numbers on a notepad,” he says by way of example.

“Now of course it’s all done electronically.”

He also cites how the advent of booking portals on the web has boosted traveller numbers, pointing as he speaks to a New Zealand-owned ‘Stray’ bus leaving the motel with a Chinese tour group who’ve enjoyed a stay in Raglan.

Toronto-based G Adventures is another travel company whose buses regularly visit the motel, Brent says.

“We have a lot more international tourists now … also a lot more olderaged Kiwis (on bus tours), especially offseason.”

And the shoulder season – the period between the high and low seasons – has got better for bookings, he adds, thanks in large part to promotion by Tourism New Zealand.

Brent rates meeting a great range of people from all over the world as a highlight of their period in the industry. “We’ve had a lot of good times.”

He mentions one overseas tourist – Robert Ward, now 86 – who came for a six or seven-week stay at the Sunset Motel for about six successive years recently to escape the harsh Canadian winters.

Robert became quite well known around town, Brent adds, and he and Diane have reciprocated the friendship by visiting him in Alberta.

Also on a personal level, two of Brent and Diane’s four children have had wedding functions at the motel.

But there has also been one particularly poignant reunion there: the hosting of Samoan families who lost loved ones in the devastating tsunami of 2009. That came about as both Raglan couples had been on holiday in Samoa when disaster struck and Andy’s wife, Maryann, tragically was herself one of the victims.

Andy has since remarried and his new wife, Annette, helps in the business.

Brent says the motel was refurbished last year so all rooms are up to date and the facility – which includes a spa pool – is well maintained. He believes there is potential for continued growth.

The central downtown location and quality of accommodation have been paramount to the success of the business, Brent says.

Shingles vaccine available at West Coast Health

Z

ostavax, the vaccination for the prevention of shingles is now available at West Coast Health Clinic and fully funded for people aged 65 – 80 years inclusive.

Zostavax is a single vaccine indicated for prevention of shingles and related neuralgia and pain.

If given by itself the vaccine is free of charge, if given on the same day as the Influenza vaccine a $10 fee will apply.

West Coast Health Clinic has not yet received their supply of Influenza vaccines.

However, we are expecting them in the next week or so.

Mt Karioi tracks closed following myrtle rust find Myrtle Rust facts

Myrtle Rust has been discovered on Mt Karioi and all summit tracks are now closed.

T

he Department of Conservation (DOC) is closing the Mt Karioi summit tracks, near Raglan, following a confirmed finding of myrtle rust. It will be closed to the public until further notice.

The fungus was discovered on a vine rātā (Metrosideros diffusa), by DOC staff performing surveillance while undertaking seed collection work. DOC is closing the affected area while a surveillance team determines the scale of this infestation.

"We are investigating the extent of the outbreak and exploring options to manage the risk of spread,” says Phil Hancock, who is leading DOC’s response.

Since it was first discovered on mainland New Zealand in May 2017, myrtle rust has become widespread

through much of the North Island.

This is the second finding on public conservation land, following confirmation of myrtle rust on Mt Messenger in Taranaki a month ago.

"It’s disheartening that myrtle rust has been detected on conservation land again, however it’s not unexpected,” says Mr Hancock.

The recent warm weather has been optimal for myrtle rust and, with the yellow powdery spots appearing on leaves and new plant shoots, new detections have increased in a number of regions.

People are encouraged to check myrtle plants – particularly ramarama, pohutukawa, lily pilly, manuka and rata.

Look for any sign of a bright yellow,

powdery eruption, or leaves that are buckled or twisted, or with dry grey or brown pustules.

It's really important not to touch the plants or brush against them, as this can disrupt the spores and speed up its spread.

Any suspected cases of myrtle rust can be reported to the biosecurity freephone number – 0800 80 99 66. MPI will investigate suspected cases, track and monitor its spread, and collect information to help understand the disease's impact on New Zealand.

• Myrtle rust (Austropuccinia psidii) is a fungi that attacks plants belonging to the Myrtaceae family, also known as the myrtle family. This includes some of our most iconic indigenous plants - pohutukawa, rata, manuka, kanuka, and ramarama, as well as exotic myrtles like guava, bottlebrush and lily pilly.

• It is found in many parts of the world including New Caledonia and all along Australia's eastern seaboard and in the Kermadec group north of New Zealand.

• Myrtle rust spores are microscopic and can easily spread across large distances by wind, or via insects, birds, people, or machinery.

• It was first discovered on mainland New Zealand in May 2017. Evidence suggests the fungus arrived in New Zealand carried by strong winds from Australia where it is well established all down the eastern coast.

• The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and the Department of Conservation (DOC) are working to try to contain it and protect New Zealand’s unique native species. This includes a seed-banking programme.

• A large operation is underway to determine where myrtle rust is and how it should be managed in the future.

• As it becomes widespread, myrtle rust will impact many of NZ’s Myrtaceae.

The Karioi Maunga ki te Moana project is working closely with DOC - and has closed all mountain trap lines temporarily until further notice. Traps on the coastline - surrounding oi / Grey Faced Petrel breeding sites will still be checked on a regular basis. All in a day's work

An occasional column featuring residents and their professions.

T

his week the Chronicle had a chat to Yvette Hulena-Leslie - who you may recognise from the Raglan Roast in Te Uku - currently also working part-time as a social worker in Hamilton assisting young people.

How did you decide to train as a social worker?

Although I’ve always wanted to work with people, I initially had no intentions of ever being a social worker. Instead, I left school part way through year thirteen with aspirations of entering into the police force, then in my early twenties I moved to Auckland to pursue psychology and criminology. Two years into my degree I decided I needed something more handson and after some further research, I felt social work was where I needed to be.

What did that involve for you? How long did the process take?

I chose to do my degree through Wintec, graduating with a Bachelor of Applied Social Science– (Social Work). The degree offered at Wintec is four years and very hands-on, which suited my learning style the best.

Can you describe the role of a social worker?

The scope of social work is remarkably wide which makes answering this question quite difficult. Personally, social work provides me with opportunities to promote social change and development, social cohesion, and the empowerment and liberation of people to enhance wellbeing. I believe strongly in social justice, human rights, collective responsibility, and

respect for diversities. These principles are also central to social work.

Did you work in other jobs while you studied?

For me, working has been essential to making this study journey possible.

Although I have worked in a number of jobs, I have been working at Raglan Roast for the past four and a bit years now. This place has become a second home and everyone there has been a massive source of support. Coffee has this way of bringing people together and I absolutely love that.

What position do you currently have and what does this involve?

I've recently accepted a part-time position in Hamilton working amongst a multidisciplinary team of drug and alcohol professionals. Part of my role is to assist young people to draw from their own experiences and strengths so they are able to make informed and educated choices when faced with making decisions surrounding drugs and alcohol.

What is your goal in terms of your career?

At the moment, my goal is to continue this knowledge gathering journey, while supporting others in their own journeys to wellness through family, emotional, physical, and spiritual wellbeing. I have always been passionate about community development and how this impacts our young people and families within them.

You grew up in Raglan and you continue to live here. Do you see yourself here long term?

Raglan has always felt like home to me, and this was made very clear to me while

studying in Auckland and Hamilton. The ocean is my happy place and where I feel most at peace, being able to come back to our family home and land makes this even more special.

What would you say to someone who is interested in pursuing Social Work?

Do your research as there are many different institutes that offer Social Work programmes; we all learn differently so select something that works for you.

Also get involved in school leadership roles, your local communities and holiday programmes. Volunteer work is always a good place to start.

t’s St John Heart of Gold Annual Appeal this week with street collections nationwide on Friday and an online campaign running for the month of April.

Dig in to your pockets to help out Raglan St John and crews around the country.

They’ll be shaking buckets during the week to raise money for command units and specialist equipment to be used when responding to major emergencies.

Made up of a mix of full-time paid employees and volunteer staff, the hardworking crews around the country treated and/or transported 469,850 patients in the last year.

Specialist emergency response equipment and training makes it easier for St John crews to treat

people more effectively in major emergencies.

Costing $180,000, the command units contain state of the art satellite, radio and cellular technology. They operate as mobile command and control centres and ensure St John can maintain communications and data capability to manage a major emergency.

Donations can be made online at www. heartofgold.org.nz or to St John collectors throughout New Zealand during the appeal week and at any ASB branch.

When an animal becomes obese and lives at an unhealthy weight, their whole body is under stress. A body under stress is more prone to getting sick, run down and lacking a well functioning immune system.

Overweight animals can start producing more oils than they require, meaning the coat becomes very oily and greasy. This can cause a lot of damage to the skin and coat of your pet, and can impact your pet’s natural skin barrier, causing any number of resulting issues.

Cats especially are known to groom and lick themselves, removing loose fur and excess oils. Once they become overweight though, they struggle to get themselves into all the crazy gymnastic positions to do this.

This leads to matted fur, creating tight clumps of dirty fur, not to mention the issue of excess oils building up in these areas. This can lead to ‘Hot Spots’ and bacterial infections which can become a real issue for these overweight pets. Big sweet dreams for Raglan Chocolate

Golfers enjoy a much deserved drink after playing in the annual St.Patrick's Golf Tourney. The competition was played over eight challenging Irish holes and in an ambrose format. Fun and laughter were the winners on the day!!

amiliar faces at the Raglan Creative Market, Raglan Chocolate owners and makers, Mike Renfree and Simone Downey, are taking small steps towards chocolate domination.

As they grow their small-scale business operating out of their Raglan home, gaining a Food Safety Certificate means the they can now supply to retail, with WOK, Raglan Roast Café and Raglan Roast Te Rapa selling the craft chocolate bars.

Mike’s always enjoyed working with chocolate and after being introduced to the idea of the 'Bean-to-Bar' concept cacao beans direct from grower to maker - he was sold on the idea of making good honest, ethically sourced, organic chocolate.

The chocolate is all made by hand with three different tastes and levels of cacao available. Mike, a food technologist in Hamilton, spends his evenings and weekends making, experimenting, molding and packaging the bars.

Experimentation is ongoing and Mike says recent new beans mean a new bar is coming shortly.

“Moving to Raglan two years ago was a big push to get going with the chocolate making and to gain our food certification,” Simone says. “Raglan people are supportive and receptive to new endeavours. And it's the place itself it is inspiring.”

The chocolate is more than just a sweet treat, the couple are passionate about the cacao story and say consumers are more aware of ethical and organic trade than ever before.

“People really want to talk about chocolate and hear about the story behind the bar,” Mike says.

Much like milk, corn and other massproduced foodstuffs from around the world, large proportions of cacao beans have also been modified in order to gain a high yield at the expense of the quality and taste of the chocolate.

Mike says the heirloom cacao beans are in danger of becoming extinct with some farmers opting to farm the modified beans due to pressure from large companies for volume or they are getting out of the business altogether.

“The farmers earn so little, the next generation aren’t going to be in the business,” he says.

Simone says craft chocolate makers care about the farmers being paid and the continuation to grow this incredible plant.

Raglan Chocolate cacao beans are organic, ethically-sourced from the Solomon Islands and the couple are also looking at suppliers from Central and South America as well.

Cacao has many different varieties and the country of origin, climate and soil influence the beans’ flavour, much like grapes and hops.

A worldwide craft chocolate movement means makers like Mike and Simone are helping to promote heirloom and existing quality cacao beans, as they hone their craft in order to develop the unique cacao flavours in their chocolate.

Head to the Raglan Creative Markets the second Sunday of each month to taste test and talk chocolate with Mike and Simone.

e’re blessed to call Raglan home. There is much to love about this town. The strong sense of community is something many of us value the most. When the chips are down there’s bound to be someone who will look after your kids, cook you a meal, take out your recycling, grab you some groceries or pick you a few lemons from their tree.

We cannot thrive in isolation and Raglan’s community spirit demonstrates first-hand the healing power of connection.

When the Chronicle connected with me a few weeks ago and offered me this space to be of service to you, I graciously accepted.

Who am I to talk?

I’m just a little girl in a grown up’s body learning to not feel so afraid of life and all its unknowns and uncertainties. I write, speak, teach and learn about holistic addiction recovery, how to create habits that serve us, ways to enjoy a sober life, mental health and natural medicine.

In a previous chapter of my life I had the experience of addiction.

Today, I choose sobriety because I want to expand my experience of my true self and my party girl identity got in the way.

I believe we recover from drug addiction, alcoholism, codependency, workaholism and perfectionism. We recover from depression, burnout, anxiety, stress, trauma, grief and chronic illness. We recover from having our hearts broken, from losing our marriages, our homes, or our jobs.

And there are many pathways to recovery. For a small town, we are fortunate to have access to a wide variety of professional individuals

and support groups. I would not be where I am today if it weren’t for Raglan’s wellness and medical providers.

If you’re reading this and you’re feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, lonely, sad, stuck, afraid or hurt, may I remind you that these people and groups are waiting to wrap you with love, understanding and kindness. Recovery happens when we give ourselves permission to go to that scary place called vulnerability, drop our facades and receive support from those we trust.

I’m grateful that I’ll be able to connect with you more in the weeks to follow. Your road to recovery need not be a lonely one.
