Someone has burnt cans and other rubbish as well as leaving rubbish bags here (see images below). A man has been living in a tent on this beach for several years and while I don't know if it is him that has caused this damage, I believe council should investigate as this kind of damage is completely unacceptable.

Oi chicks are often left to survive for sevral weeks alone in their burrows.

i are once again taking flight in Whaingaroa thanks to the work of A Rocha Aotearoa led project 1500+ traps Also known as grey faced petrel, there are currently 23 nesting burrows being monitored, which is double the amount from last year.

Trapping and monitoring are the first line of defence for the regeneration of Karioi's forest and seabirds says Karioi Maunga ki te Moana project manager Kristel van Houte.

More than 1500 traps across 2300 hectares of Karioi have been set and are regularly checked by volunteers in order to protect Karioi's forest and seabirds.

“Karioi is unique. It’s this beautiful mountain that flows into the ocean and when you think about what it might have been like and now it’s coming back to life,” she says.

A seabird, oi only come to land for breeding purposes, with prospecting young birds and mature breeding birds visiting Karioi around April to meet their mate and establish successful nesting sites.

Adults then head back to sea and won't return until June or July to lay an egg.

The very modern oi parents share the care of their offspring, returning to take turns sitting on the egg and feeding the chick once it is hatched.

The chicks have to survive for up to several weeks, in the burrow, alone and unprotected while the parents are

at sea feeding until the chicks fledge in December.

Kristel says the eggs, chicks and adults are vulnerable to stoats, possums, feral cats and rats, and 24-hour observation cameras allow the volunteers to look after the burrows with minimal interference and respond to predator intrusions.

“We’ve trapped a stoat several metres from a burrow.”

Oi are important ecosystem engineers in Karioi’s regeneration as they deposit rich ocean nutrients in guano and are excellent excavators – aerating the soil, which aids plant and root growth.

Every year Raglan has the pleasure of seeing a handful of fur seal pups and adults visit our shore.

It is an offence under the Marine Mammals Protection Act 1978 to disturb, harass, harm, injure or kill a seal. A dog owner whose dog attacks a seal could face prosecution.

s many of you will be aware, after almost 17 years at West Coast Health Clinic Dr

Fiona Bolden will be leaving Raglan at the end of November.

She is not going to another practice, though she will be working for the benefit of rural communities throughout the country in her new role with the New Zealand Rural General Practice Network. She has loved being a part of the Raglan community and wishes you all the best for the future.

We would like to publicly acknowledge all the hard work, dedication and care that she has provided to the patients and staff at West Coast Health Clinic over the years. Her knowledge, wisdom, sense of humour and very loud sneezes will be greatly missed.

While Fiona herself is irreplaceable, she has helped ensure that you will be in good hands through employing Dr Melody Macleod and Dr Roimata Herman, who will be our long-term female GPs. Dr Melody will join the team in December and Dr Roimata will join permanently in April next year, as Dr Ilias will be returning to the Netherlands.

We hope you will have the opportunity to say farewell to Fiona at some point over the next two months.

She began in a non-competitive recreational class, but then advanced quickly to the competitive team. After great results she will have moved up two grades to be competing in Step 3 next season.

She practises 2-3 times a week in Hamilton and

travels around the North Island for competitions.

Miko's Mum Chi says Miko enjoys learning new tricks and meeting new friends, but also has some big goals and dreams as she would like to compete at national level some day. The Chronicle team wishes Miko all the best and we look forward to reporting her achievements.

“I thought it (the twister) was the end of the world,” says longtime local Jo Bloomer who for years now has farmed Ratanui, part of the old Kauroa block in Pond Rd, with partner and former Raglan vet Ross Loveridge.

“Gums were picked up and thrown at the stable … our shearing shed roof was blown clean off ... there was debris up to my knees and all the (live) power lines were down,” she told the Chronicle. “I was terrified.”

Getting arborists in to clear the acres of fallen gum, macrocarpa and pine then truck it to the house cost a small fortune, Jo recalls.

And investing in a wood splitter from the South Island wasn’t cheap either.

But Jo and Ross reckoned, rightly, their 40-year-old timber had a future. So while it may be a labour-intensive operation The Woody’s premium firewood, as it’s called, is finally seasoned and selling without their having to fell a single tree.

“We’ve built a business from a disaster,” says Jo proudly. The couple admit they’d been overwhelmed by the mess in the aftermath of the tornado.

With enough tornado firewood to last years, they are now focused on regenerating the native bush on their 600-odd acre property, which at its highest points has spectacular vistas over Whaingaroa’s waterways and harbour.

This historic farm is a “garden of Eden” to Jo who’s passionate about providing a natural setting of fertile grass and native trees for grazing quality sheep and beef.

Conversely she sees a neighbouring

block of pines on Pond Rd, which is being commercially processed and sold offshore, as a disaster of another sort that threatens all of Raglan.

Jo says she knows firsthand the damage being caused, having recently bought part of the next-door block – with “toxic” pines felled and strewn over it – in a bid to save or rehabilitate the land.

“Pines take the guts out of the soil,” Jo insists. “Farmers have to be careful about clear-felling their paddocks.”

Once clear-felled, pines not only leave hillsides exposed to erosion but will ultimately clog up Raglan’s waterways with forestry “slash” as occurred at Tolaga Bay on the East Coast recently, she says.

Jo and Ross insist both their land and livestock are treated with respect. Jo’s also looking to open another sideline business – already dubbed The Little Kauroa Farm Shop – just as soon as she’s “nailed” her builder down to when he’s available to help take her rustic vision forward.

Selling “stuff” off the farm is the simple goal, she says, due in large part to the efforts of on site farm worker Sez Fitzpatrick and her friend Sass who take care of the planting and nurturing.

Jo’s optimistic environmentally aware locals and visitors will like what they’ll have to offer separately to their “premium” firewood (currently available at $180 a cubic metre delivered).

“We’re planting out trees, raising crops from seeds, caring for a very old organic orchard … all using sheep manure from under the shearing shed and the pure Ratanui water sourced from an underground river.” ● The Kauroa block was developed by one of Raglan’s pioneering European families, the Gibbisons, only three years after the Rev James Wallis set the ball rolling by buying several sections at the first Government land sale locally in mid-1852.

Invasive plants that threaten our lifestyle Part 3 - Wattle

I

t’s gratifying to be stopped in the street, given feedback on this series and reminded that other are plenty of invasive plants to look out for besides privet and woolly nightshade (refer Chronicle issues of September 20 and 27, available on line).

It has also been upsetting to hear over the last few days, the stories of Raglan children who have suffered terrifying asthma attacks as a result of neighbourhood privet.

These are not just weeds. A weed is just a plant in the wrong place. These are the invasive colonists of the plant world infiltrating the greater Raglan landscape. If we carry the kaitiaki torch, the one that says we care about and care for the environment that cares for us, we need to be more vigilant.

And this beautiful place does care for us in a thousand ways, sustaining our physical and spiritual wellbeing if we are open to it.

Part of being open to it is being prepared to embrace the custodial role that has become

The event is the final round of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship and will see a number of champions crowned across various categories, including international star Hayden Paddon winning his fourth national title.

The rally begins with a ceremonial start at 5pm Friday October 12 on Wainui Street and will feature an autograph signing session with the leading drivers.

The action begins early on Saturday with cars leaving the service park at Raglan Airfield at 7.30am to tackle four high speed special stages, each run twice. Cars head north of Raglan to the Te Akau region for the morning loop, including a refuel at Te Akau. They then head south of Raglan for the famous Te Hutewai and Whaanga Coast tests that were iconic stages

when the World Rally Championship visited these shores.

The Hyundai + Hella spectator spot on the corner of Ruapuke and Tuturimu Roads on the Whaanga Coast stage from 1pm onwards is sure to be a popular addition to this year’s rally with activities including racing simulators, wheel change challenge, virtual reality headsets, face painting and more. Not only is there plenty to do but the vantage point gives a close up view of the cars as well as allowing them to viewed way off into the distance as the road winds down the spectacular countryside to the Tasman Sea coast below.

Food and drink will be available at the Raglan Airfield service park where teams will be based. The prize-giving (which will include the New Zealand Rally Championship Prizegiving for 2018) will take place at the Raglan Club at approximately 6.30pm.

Tackling the Issues An occasional opinion column with long term Raglan resident, Ross Henderson.

a necessary part of living in harmony with the natural world.

Wattle (aka acacia mearnsii, Australian acacia or black wattle) I was surprised that when I went on the Waikato Regional Council invasive species web page, I struggled to find any reference to wattle. I was even more surprised when I did a search of the website for “invasive plants, wattle” and it took me to Acacia Bay. Now that’s bloody clever by anyone’s standards, wattle being a member of the acacia family, but I didn’t need to be reminded that local issues are competing with monitoring algal blooms in Lake Taupo when it comes to the allocation of my rates.

Wattle features along with privet and cane toads in the worst 100 invasive species on the planet. Like woolly nightshade, wattle has become a serious issue in Whale Bay and it’s spreading. I’ve been informed that there are worse infestations on Te Hutewai Road and there are many places around the harbour where it’s spreading.

Wattle has a major impact on biodiversity being highly competitive and eventually reducing or eliminating indigenous vegetation. This invasiveness is partly due to its ability to produce large amounts of long-lived seeds and partly due, also, to the allelopathic properties of its leaves and branches which inhibit seed germination of native species (allelopathy - chemical inhibition of one plant species by another, by the release of germination or growth inhibitors into the environment).

Wattle, with its tannin rich bark and sap, has had it’s uses for dyes and for tanning leather. It also makes good firewood and

was the wood of choice for Aussie bakers back in the day, so it’s worth hanging onto the wood for next winter.

But whatever you do with the wood, get rid of the wattle. The longer we leave it, the more harm it will do and the harder it will be to eradicate.

So, thank you for all the feedback.

Coming up; there are definitely a few other invasive species that deserve a mention including wild ginger, pampas, freedom campers, etc. The next instalment will look at some of these and will red flag a couple of emergent issues that threaten to cause serious problems in the future.

Recommended approaches for physical control Wattle 1. Hand pull seedlings minimising soil disturbance.

2. Make cuts at 100ml spacings around the base of tree & fill each cut herbicide.

3. Ringbark trees; ensure danger to public from falling branches is minimised. Paint ringbarked area immediately with herbicide 4. Where trees have been felled, paint stump with herbicide

hat crazy time of year is almost upon us - Labour weekend - and the unofficial start of the busy time for our community. It seems to creep up faster every year and with it the challenges of coping with the influx of visitors to our shores.

I often have conversations with community members about the pressures on our infrastructure: overflowing bins, increased rubbish, parking, the condition of our high use gravel roads and the general worry about how our little town can cope with the evergrowing popularity of this place we call home.

There are no easy, quick-fix solutions to managing these challenges, but there are organisations and individuals out on the street doing good things: Xtreme Zero Waste, Plastic Bag Free Raglan, coastal beach clean ups, Whaingaroa Habourcare, Karioi Maunga Project, dune restoration work and the people who tirelessly pick up rubbish on their daily walks - thanks and keep up the great work!

It will take a lot more work to help facilitate change. Meanwhile, over the busy summer period Xtreme Zero Waste will be emptying our rubbish bins throughout Raglan three times a day, including all our bins on our parks and reserves. This can take up to 11 hours per day. They also service the recycling containers at Te Mata, Te Uku and Waitetuna.

Please remember to wrap well any broken glass before it goes into our rubbish to ensure no one gets cut. If you have any rubbish issues please call the Xtreme office 078256509.

I recently attended a site tour of Raglan infrastructure with a number of key stakeholders. We visited the Lorenzen Bay pump station where Roger and Mikee showed us how they cleaned the stations and talked about how things work. We also visited our wastewater treatment ponds and our fresh water treatment plant, followed by a sit-down shared lunch and discussion on what the future might look like for our wastewater plant and discharge.

It was a really productive day out and we hope to host more community visits to our treatment plants and infrastructure.

extile artist Anita Seddon is exhibiting at the Raglan Old School Arts Centre from Monday, October 1 to Friday, October 12. The exhibition is showing during ROSAC’s opening hours of 10am-2pm.

Anita has created textile art for the past 20 years, mainly wall hangings depicting Whaingaroa harbour and surrounds.

She finds inspiration from the beauty surrounding her and says it is not difficult to get inspired from this place.

“When I see the orca in the harbour, the sea birds, Māui dolphin and all the waders around the shore, I just have to get it out of my head.”

Caring for our coastal environment

What an amazing turn out we had for the Coastal Clean Up last Saturday! Over 60 locals hit the beaches across the harbour to collect trash thrown up by the sea, as part of the International Coastal Clean Up Day on the 15th of September. Together we covered 5.5 kilometres and collected approx 1 cubic metre of rubbish from this isolated and beautiful coastline.

Although the volume of rubbish we found was less than previous cleanups, the number of pieces collected was shocking. The beach sweepers recorded the trash as they collected it - and found a staggering 3046 tiny pieces of plastic, 46 plastic shotgun waddings, 9 balls, 10 jandals/shoes, 6 intact lightbulbs, 9 lollipop sticks, 2 tarps, 190 plastic bottle lids, 36 food wrappers, 32 plastic takeaway containers, 41 plastic bottles, 7 lighters and 54 plastic bags amongst a range of other trash. We’ll be sending all the data from this clean up, to the Ocean Conservancy to add to their international database - this work is putting Raglan on the map for taking care of our ocean environment! Continuing this data analysis approach, Ella van Gool & the Karioi team will be leading a citizen science project using transects to look at accumulation of microplastics along our coast. Not surprisingly, plastic was a common find. As we all know, sunlight and waves cause floating plastics to break into increasingly smaller particles, which can end up in the food chain causing death and illness in our marine life. Our oceans need our help - together we can work to clean up what’s already out there and stop more plastic reaching our seas. The Whaingaroa Environment Centre plans to continue coordinating beach cleans with you, our community and supporting organisations - watch our facebook page, newsletter and this paper for details of the next one in summer. In the meantime, keep up the great work Whaingaroa! All you dog-walkers, beach strollers and ocean lovers are doing such as awesome job every time you pick up a couple of pieces of rubbish on your way along the beach. Be the ripple in your network....this is how we do things here: we care for our coast.

Citizen Science can Save our Seas

Picking up rubbish is good as it removes harmful items from our beaches. Picking up rubbish, and recording it, is even better! We aim to better understand the causes of the pollution impacting our beautiful environment right here in Raglan by collecting data at our community beach cleans.

Armed with pollution data collected by citizen scientists, we have the power to influence consumers, legislators and manufacturers to make better decisions. The International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) data collected over several decades around the world has been instrumental in developing plastic pollution policy. Retailers, like Starbucks (US) and McDonald’s (UK) have announced they will no longer provide plastic straws, mainly as a result of consumer activism based on citizen science. We can also compare the data with other beaches in the country and the world. By carefully looking at the composition of microplastics, we can determine whether the source is the plastics industry (pellets), or from larger plastics, that have broken down. Microplastics can be ingested and also transported by birds, insects or wind. Seals, whales, dolphins, fish and seabirds such as our taonga species, Oi / Grey-Faced Petrel, all found around our beautiful coastline, are just some of the impacted species.

The best way to protect our beaches from plastic pollution is by preventing litter and plastic usage anywhere.

The second Aggregate event, The Harbourview Cup, was played Saturday, September 29, playing Pairs. It had a very good attendance with a number of our new bowlers joining in. Winners were Maureen Wahanga and Queenie Tukiri, second were Les Schlager and Murray Eddy, and third place went to Bill Bond and Brenda Waters.

TWILIGHT BOWLS advanced notice

ur second round of Fun Day Sunday bowls proved very popular again on Sunday, September 23. Some players had a wee refresher from last week, while the newcomers had the basics explained and had a go.

After learning the basics of how to place the mat, hold a bowl and deliver it, we moved on to learn how to play a game. It didn’t take long for this group to grasp how it all comes together There was plenty of natural talent among these players, which wasgreat to see.

Keep it going.

This venture was so popular that we have decided to run another ‘Fun Day Sunday’ for Beginner Bowlers….so WATCH THIS SPACE for details.

From these two Fun Day Sundays, players have been encouraged to come along to our roll-up days on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 12.45pm (small fee applies).

We extend a friendly ‘Welcome’ to those who have joined up as Bowling Club members and we wish you well in your bowling careers.

Temporary Road Closures – Raglan/Te Akau Notice is hereby given that Waikato District Council, for the purpose of allowing Rally New Zealand to hold a motorsport event in the Raglan/Te Akau area, will close the following roads for the period set out below.
