At this session, we’ll also provide you with some more information about the charter process, and share some of our recent school successes. We know that the ERO report is of interest to many in our community so we‘ll provide some further information on it as well as the actions we’re undertaking to meet the recommendations outlined by the ERO. Please join us on Saturday, November 4, at the Raglan Town Hall. Feel free to drop in anytime between 10am-12noon.

aving your say about Whaingaroa's future just got very comfortable.

Raglan Naturally coordinator Gabrielle Parsons is hitting the streets of Raglan with her couch in tow to find out the community’s aspirations and she’s happy to talk the hard stuff too.

Gabrielle has a genuine interest in listening to others views and ideas and feels we have much to learn from each other.

“As well as inviting people along to our meetings we thought it would be a nice idea to get out and about in the community and introduce them to Raglan Naturally.”

Started by the community in 2001 as a shared vision and guide for the future of Whaingaroa, Raglan Naturally is currently reviewing the original community plan, in order to update it with what locals want for their town and surrounding areas today and into the future.

“It’s nice to have an informal space

to talk about what people want, how they might want to be involved and how they can stay informed,” she says.

And, just like the squeaky wheel, Gabrielle believes Raglan Naturally can provide a cohesive voice for the community at the council table and other organisations involved in Whaingaroa's future development that they will find hard to ignore.

“If we speak as a community we have a much stronger voice.”

Several years ago, Gabrielle worked with Devonport Transition Towns, which works on community resilience and sustainability projects and she hopes that this sort of approach can help with Raglan Naturally.

“We will spend time building the Raglan Naturally foundations by looking closely at key threads such as the Treaty of Waitangi, whole and inclusive community engagement and a stronger future focus, including climate change,” she says.

“Part of what we hope to do is coordinate the aspirations of the community and through Raglan Naturally empower the community to take action on the issues that matter to them without having to wait for council to take action.”

This may mean, under the Raglan Naturally banner, the community can apply for funding for the projects that matter to them, Gabrielle says.

She is looking to invite other interested community groups to share the couch with her in an effort to represent a wider voice as well as finding out what matters to them.

“We are just as interested in the views of our local groups as we are in the views of individuals.”

Students to edit school feature S

tudents from the four schools in Whaingaroa will now have a voice in their local newspaper.

Margery (principal) and the student editors from Waitetuna School discussing their first issue.

The Chronicle, thanks to Meridian sponsorship will be publishing a school feature that runs twice during the school term. Each school has selected a group of student editors from year 7 and 8 that will produce content to share with the wider community.

Each school will have the opportunity to share their recent news, celebrate success and publicize important dates ahead.

The Chronicle is working closely with each of the schools to educate the students on the role of a student editor and different aspects of working in the media. As part of the initiative all the students involved are meeting together at Raglan Area School for informative sessions facilitated by the Chronicle team.

Look out for the first edition that will run next week on the Thursday, Novemer 9.

Whāingaroa Aroha is the work of local Dwayne Henshilwood who first came across the initiative to share excess produce with the local community in Te Awamutu.

Dwayne is the type of guy who hates to see things go to waste, especially when it comes to food and his pallet and beer crate shed provides a space for people to share their surplus stock.

“It just fits in really nicely with what’s already happening in the community and any way we can minimise waste is a good thing,” he says.

“Plenty of us grow things and they all seem to come on at once. It feels really good sharing something that you have grown.”

Dwayne says the church is supportive of his initiative and having it in such a central location makes it easily accessible.

“It (Whāingaroa Aroha) went through the committee and they were really keen. It fits in with their kaupapa.”

The philosophy of sharing food that might ordinarily go to waste inspires Dwayne and he’s pleased to see the shelves full and then empty again the next day.

He’s heard really great stories of local kids on the way to school helping themselves to a morning snack.

Xtreme Zero Waste have kindly supplied books and Dwayne says the generous people of Raglan have dropped off plants, bulbs, myriad of fruit and vegetables and someone even left a stack of handmade fabric bags.

The Olive Tree charity movie night for KASM fter the disappointing decision to allow seabed mining to take place A on our beautiful west coast, KASM needs all the support it can to appeal this decision.

An independent group supporting this cause will host a Spanish night featuring the movie The Olive Tree. This Spanish movie (with English subtitles) is about a 2000 year old olive tree from a family farm uprooted and sold to an energy company in Germany for their foyer. With an award winning performance from lead actress Anna Castillo, she attempts to bring it back to its rightful place.

It seemed like an appropriate movie with a theme of a spiritual and emotional connection to nature versus a large corporate company.

Join us at 6.30pm for tapas and nibbles, which is included in the ticket price of $25, (alcohol can be purchased) with the movie viewing at 7pm on Friday, November 10 at Old Arts Centre. very year our clinic and other vet clinics have a large amount of stray animals through their doors, most of which are cats and dogs.

ana Tangata Boxing West Coast (MTBWC) made their debut on Saturday night, with four corporate fighters taking the ring for the very first time.

With one win and three losses and positive feedback on the quality of fighters produced for their first corporate fight, MTBWC has been renewed with the fresh drive to continue doing what they love.

MBTWC opened their doors in April this year, with open invitation for people in the community of Raglan and west coast to come and train. Trainer, Damion Scarlett is open up to five nights per week Monday to Friday, from 6–7.30pm from his home in Te Mata.

The low cost makes it affordable with flat rate of $10 per week for unlimited training nights. On Monday afternoons from 4.30-5.30pm he also provides free training for children aged 10 -14 years old.

MTBWC would like to thank the fighters that put their hand up to take the ring, they have all shown growth and development in their skills over the past few months

of training and Damion is very proud of each of them.

Nicole Wiley fought hard and through three rounds only to lose in a closely scored fight. Chochise Tukiri matched his opponent blow for blow until the very last round only to lose to a knock out.

Mason Tukiri also showed skill and poise through to the end of the fight and lost to a slightly more experienced fighter, however knew exactly what he needed to work on the minute he stepped out of the ring.

Holly Kereopa has shown commitment to finishing what she started, despite having difficulty making regular trainings, this determination saw her win her fight in a split decision.

MTBWC would also like to thank Stephen O’Byrne from LJ Hooker, who has been a keen supporter from the beginning and sponsored our club shirts. Also a massive shout out to the community of Raglan who came across to support the fighters, it was a great entertaining night of boxing.

When a stray or lost animal is presented to a vet clinic or similar organisation, our first goal is to locate the animal’s owners. If that animal is not microchipped or council registered, it is near impossible for most clinics to locate the owners.

At three months of age all dogs are legally required to be microchipped and registered.

Farm working dogs are exempt from microchipping.

Dog registration is dealt with by the local council, and microchipping can either be done at the council or at your local vet clinic.

When a dog is microchipped by a vet clinic, the microchip number is entered into that clinic’s database only. For example, only an Anexa FVC clinic can access your details through searching the microchip on their system. No other vet clinic will have your details.

If your dog is registered with the council, any council office can locate your details through the microchip number.

However, this can only be done within business hours and

databases must be searched individually based on region, making the process much more tedious.

For a small one-off cost, you can join your pet up to the NZ Companion Animal Register (NZCAR), with or without council registration.

This is accessible by any vet clinic, council, SPCA or other organisation on a 24/7 basis via the internet. This makes it much easier to reunite pets with owners. The companion animal register will also accept registration for other species, such as horses, birds, cats, rabbits etc.

Year upon year, we have a massive amount of strays handed in to our clinic, some of which we are able to reunite with their owners, others of which we are not able to find the owners of due to no identification.

We strongly recommend all pets be microchipped and registered with the NZCAR and or the council, so that if they find themselves in a vet clinic/SPCA as a stray or injured, they can be reunited with their owners.

Microchipping is quick and easy, and the benefits greatly outweigh the small one-off cost.

he Yot Club has a hearing next Wednesday, November 8, in regards to their liquor license and if they do not have their license reinstated, this will mean the immediate closure of the venue.

Support in the way of letters submissions is asked to be sent to backtheyotclub@gmail.com.

We know it may make people uncomfortable to blindly back the Yot Club, so Andy Meek the owner is keen to address anyone interested to hear about the relevant issues around his liquor licensing at an open information evening next Monday.

The event venue is currently being organised but it is most likely to be held at around 7pm on Monday, November 6th. Please keep an eye on the Raglan

For those hundreds of you who have sent through letters of support so far, thank you so much.

The effect that the closure of the Yot Club will have on the community is one of the criteria that has to be looked at during the hearing and the many heartfelt letters and messages of support show how much of an impact the loss of the Yot Club would have on the wider community.

In the meantime, we will be closed this coming Friday.

Digging in for Raglan’s community gardens Maori seats to be

The initial community gardens event was attended by about 20 keen locals.

lip on your gardening gloves and dig out your shovels for Raglan’s community garden working bee on Saturday, November 4 at 9.30am.

Located behind the police station in Wi Neera St, the community garden, originally started by Solscape yoga instructor Venu Krsna Das, is once again getting cultivating after a few quiet years.

Whaingaroa Environment Centre team kickstarted the project with a community meeting several weeks ago and the working bee at the plot will make headway into getting the once-loved

community space ready for sowing.

Not just a space for growing food, the vision is for the community-owned project is to provide a sustainable gardening model, support a heritage seed bank, share and learn new skills and provide a gathering place for the community – to name a few.

The initial meeting was met with enthusiasm with around 20 keen locals having input into the project.

The ‘Garden Guardians’ working group led by Stacey and Juliana Albertonia will oversee the project and continue the groundswell for the garden.

Juliana is excited about the shared learning that will happen in this space.

“There is a lot of knowledge in our community,” she says.

Not a massive site, the community garden will be manageable and functional, says WEC coordinator Stacey Hill.

“This will be a model of what can be done in someone’s own backyard.”

The initial plan by permaculture experts, WEC founding member Liz Stanaway and Solscape head gardener Shai Brod, will be a six- month concept to get the garden growing.

“Then it will be over to what the community wants from there,” Stacey says.

Initial thought on how the crop will be divvied include free pickings for the community garden workers, and Stacey insists the garden’s ethos is based on affordability.

“Growing food shouldn’t be expensive,” she says. “The community gardens will be a place where everyone can learn how to grow healthy organic food themselves” A local seedbank is also being revived at WEC - they are keen to hear from any keen gardeners who have a source of heritage seeds they could share with the project.

Stacey and Juliana would also love to hear from volunteers willing to spend some time at the garden in any capacity.

Head to the community garden behind the police station on Wi Neera St for a working bee on Saturday, November 4 at 9.30am - bring tools and gloves if you have them, a water bottle and wear closed shoes.

he two Māori seats on Waikato Regional Council will be retained following a vote by councillors.

The current Māori constituencies are Nga Hau e Wha and Nga Tai ki Uta and have been in effect for almost four years.

Today a majority of seven to three councillors reconfirmed the status quo of having two Māori constituencies for electoral purposes.

Those voting for the status quo were chair Alan Livingston, Jenni Hayman, Stu Kneebone, Fred Lichtwark, Dal Minogue, Barry Quayle and Bob Simcock. Councillors Jane Hennebry, Stu Husband and Russ Rimminton voted against, while Hugh Vercoe abstained.

Earlier, councillors Hennebry, Husband and Rimminton had voted for a motion calling for electors to be polled on the issue at a cost of up to $450,000 with the outcome of the poll applicable at the 2019 election. All other councillors present voted against holding a poll.

In moving the motion for a poll, Cr Hennebry said she personally did not like “race-based seats”. She wanted the public to have a say through a poll rather than councillors having a “closed mind” and making the choice. Supporting her, Cr Husband believed Māori no longer needed “tokenism” pointing out the current Parliament had many Māori MPs. But Cr Simcock said he had heard no community discomfit about the seats, while Cr Lichtwark supported them remaining, noting a copy of the Treaty of Waitangi on the wall.

Cr Livingston said Māori seats had proven their effectiveness, particularly given the council’s Resource Management Act and Treaty settlement obligations towards Māori. He believed councillors had a solid understanding of how the seats were working and were therefore in a position to make a wellinformed choice.

After the meeting, Cr Livingston said the two Māori councillors, deputy chair Tipa Mahuta and Kataraina Hodge, are both making very valuable contributions to the running of council, in their individual right as councillors and as representatives of the Māori community.

“They are both very effective in particular at helping ensure Māori perspectives are taken into account, something which helps the council fulfil its legal obligations under various legislation, such as the RMA and Treaty settlements.”

Sharp jump in values across Waikato District reported Waikato District Councillors received a detailed report from Quotable Value (QV) this week on the district’s Rating Revaluation for 2017.

The rating revaluation figures compiled by QV show the total rateable value of the 31,271 properties within Waikato District Council is now $27.69 billion with the land value of those properties now valued at $17.12 billion.

The Council reported last week that Waikato district property values had risen by an average of 33.7 per cent overall in the past three years.

Waikato District Council’s General Manager Strategy and Support Tony Whittaker said, “A change in your rateable value does not mean rates for your property will change by a similar percentage. The Council does not collect more rating income as a result of increased property values or less rating income if values decrease.”

Rating valuations are carried out on all properties in New Zealand, usually once every three years to specifically help local councils set rates for the following three year period. Rating values are just one of a number of factors councils use to allocate rates. Council rates will not be updated based on the new 2017 rating valuations until 1 July 2018.

The updated rating valuations should reflect the likely selling price of a property at the effective revaluation date, which was 1 July, 2017, but do not include chattels.

The updated rating valuations are independently audited by the Office of the Valuer General, and need to meet rigorous quality standards before the new rating valuations are certified.

New rating values were posted to property owners from the end of last week [week ending 20 October, 2017]. If owners do not agree with the rating value they have the right to object. The objection close-off date is 24 November, 2017.
