Dear Editor, Raglan is still a very small community.

Old information used to confirm that a reasonably satisfactory supermarket needed to be backed by about 12 to 15000 people. With respect to Alan Vink and his thoughts on free trade one has to remember, winters in Raglan are very tough on all businesses.

It is doubtful that chain concerns companies like KFC McDonalds, The Warehouse, etc would quite probably change Raglan but not be really of benefit.

Raglan could become the unique cottage industry centre for the greater part of the North Island, a cooperative drive centred on the Chamber of Commerce could well

advance and make this happen. The following could well be set up and trading with a bit of lateral thinking.

Stone carving, glass blowing, various liquor developments, cheese making. A Raglan ice cream, cabbage tree weaving and fine flax.

There could be a place for planning of weddings, etc, and finally the development of a school for all marine activities. I think we have the right kind of people to set something like a cottage industry town going. Get them talking and making a start.

Wastewater smoke testing to start

I

f you see smoke coming from Raglan’s drainage system in the coming weeks, it should not be cause for alarm.

Waikato District Council will soon be smoke testing Raglan’s underground wastewater drainage system in the northeast section of town.

General manager service delivery, Tim Harty says this work forms an important part of a districtwide assessment into the condition of Council’s underground pipes, especially in Raglan.

“It is also part of council’s ongoing commitment to improving wastewater infrastructure so that negative impacts associated with overflows or leaks can be minimised,” he says.

By doing this work, council is looking for faults within the system such as stormwater downpipes being connected to the wastewater network.

Wastewater systems should only be taking water from your toilets, shower,

laundry and kitchen. If water from roofs or land is going into the wastewater network it can cause problems such as overflows of wastewater.

Smoke testing will be completed in stages from mid-February and the contractor carrying out the work for council will need external access to each property for approximately 10-15 minutes. The contractors will not need to enter houses.

Raglan residents in the affected area will have already received a letter about the work and can expect to receive another letter a week prior to the work happening in their neighborhood, along with some information on what the smoke testing will look like.

Further work via a closed circuit television (CCTV) pipe inspection programme is also planned to start in February as part of the district-wide assessment of council’s underground pipes.

Anniversary weekend brings crowds and sunshine

A

uckland Anniversary Weeekend bought one of the warmest days of the new year so far, perfect timing for all the visitors in town for the annual Raglan Arts Weekend and Little Food Fest.

“We had a very successful weekend with the wonderful weather doing its bit to attract 350 visitors from Hamilton and further afield. The days picked up slowly as I’m sure everyone was enjoying leisurely breakfasts around town first,” said Jane Galloway from Palm Prints.

“It was very rewarding for us to talk to people who knew our work but hadn’t met us. With my latest New Zealand Flora print series being popular I even had a couple of botanists visit to say how much they appreciated my work.

“A very successful weekend! Now we need a lie down!" Said Jane.

The annual arts and food event is getting increasingly popular every year with over 33 artists taking part in this year’s weekend.

Topping up Raglan reservoir after quake a $140,000 operation

S

upplying Raglan residents with water after November’s 7.5 magnitude earthquake affected the town’s supply has cost Waikato District Council about $140,000.

WDC service delivery general manager Tim Harty said the total cost was difficult to estimate but was in the order of about $140,000, including about $120,000 spent trucking in drinking water for residents, night and day, over the four-day operation.

Staff estimated that more than 200 tanker trips were made, delivering more than 3 million litres of water to the community.

The earthquake, which struck near Hanmer Springs, had shook up the mountain spring that supplies the town water, making it murky and causing the pump to turn off.

The council had to top up the reservoir until the water treatment plant could be turned back on again, once tests came back clear.

Residents were told to limit their water use to only necessary drinking, which meant

forgoing washing, showering and flushing the toilet.

“Ensuring Raglan had enough drinking water after the incident was a big job, but council appreciated everything locals did to conserve water during this time. From the event, we learnt that we all need to be prepared for an emergency, no matter where we live in the country,” said Mr Harty.

Staff is investigating whether council’s insurance will cover the cost of the operation.

If not, it will seek approval to cover the cost with disaster recovery funds held by council.

Blaize Harth is working as a diving instructor on board the 20-metre catamaran ‘Ocean Freedom’.

laize Harth used to get his kicks B out on the water -- now he gets them under it.

Eight months into his job as a diving instructor on Queensland's Great Barrier Reef, the former Raglan Surfing Academy student is having a blast.

"It's amazing," the 21 year old surfer from Whale Bay says of the undersea world he now explores with tourists just about every day. Together they marvel at the abundant fish and coral life which makes up the 2300 kilometre-long ecosystem.

"Everything [underwater] overwhelms you," he says.

Each working day Blaize travels an hour from the Cairns flat he shares with five others --including his old mate Zac Hunwick who’s also from the bay -- to board the 20-metre catamaran ‘Ocean Freedom’, which takes up to 75 tourists at a time out to what is the world’s largest coral reef.

As one of three or four instructors aboard, Blaize takes introductory scuba divers for their first dive ever and says it’s a rewarding experience. “I get to see a lot of happiness,” he told the Chronicle recently on a rare day off.

He’s part of a 12-strong crew which includes deckhands, a coxman who heads a complimentary glass-bottom boat tour operating in tandem with the daylong dive tour, a mechanic and a “hostie” who runs the food and drinks bar on board.

Both young and old, he reckons, go either snorkelling or scuba diving in this tropical island paradise. A man around 70 for instance recently had his first dive, says Blaize, “but we mainly cater to the 20-somethings”.

There are also whole families, he adds, especially at this time of year with the summer holidays. Anyone including children under five can snorkel but divers need to be at least 14.

Blaize completed dive training up to instructor level the year after he left Raglan Area School. He was inspired to do so by a young graduate from Dive

Zone Whitianga, Ashe Lambert, who talked to the surfing academy students about diving as a career option.

Not long after graduating from Dive Zone himself -- and wanting to get on with the big OE -- Blaize headed to Cairns with “no job, no nothing, just a bit of money" but managed to land this first diving instructor position through an ad and a “good contact”.

“It's a very nice lifestyle, and Cairns is a beautiful place,” says the larger-thanlife Blaize, whose mass of sun-bleached curls -- seen escaping from beneath his cap on his Facebook page -- has grown back after he had his head shaved seven months ago in a fundraiser for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Blaize is in awe of the humpback whales he sees from ‘Ocean Freedom’ as they frolic in the waves on their annual migration from the Antarctic to the warmer waters of the Great Barrier Reef.

But he's sobered too by the well-

documented changes to the reef. “The coral is slowly, slowly getting bleached; it’s losing colour,” he says.

The changes are a result not only of global warming, he explains, but also of tourism – the fuel and oil from boats, and litter from human activity in a oncepristine environment.

Blaize sees himself continuing his current lifestyle for a while but had his appetite whetted for more adventures on a recent two-week New Year's trip to Bali with Zac and two other Raglanders they met up with there.

"Cairns is a really good place to start travelling," he's decided.

Zac -- who's also trained as a diving instructor -- wants to travel too and is set on snowboarding in Japan. Meantime he's working hard as a prep cook in a couple of Cairns' cafes, having done a similar job not so long ago at Vinnies/Valentes in Raglan.

Health in Your Hands A column connecting with senior citizens in our community

Introducing Pauline Abrahams who retired to Raglan four years ago to be near her daughter and grandchildren. She quickly joined with the local senior groups, teaching crafts to Care and Craft and tutoring encaustic art to children's groups. As secretary for the Community Support Group she became involved with The Raglan Connect festivals.

Pauline is a volunteer for the Raglan Lions and a member of the Senior Techology group and the Writer's Group.

Age concern: Free Nutrition and Wellness Course e have a busy year ahead and W now have the full support of Age Concern from Hamilton.

For the month of March they have organised a Free Nutrition and Wellness Course for people over 65, to be held every Wednesday morning at the Stewart St Church Hall. Clive Anderson, a professional chef, will be demonstrating how to prepare simple meals suitable for elderly people, particularly those living on their own.

The Raglan Community Support Group monthly meetings start on Wednesday, February 4. Care and Craft begin weekly meetings on Monday, February 9, at 9.30am. Contact Phyllis, ph 8258716, or Pauline, ph 8250232, for more details.

Sadly, the Little Gem Opportunity Shop has finished at the Stewart St hall but hopefully

the Saturday Morning Drop-in Centre will continue. The Lions Opportunity Shop has had a busy summer but needs volunteers to continue to keep open everyday. The Raglan Community Bargain Basement is also open again after the summer break and also requires volunteers.

The senior citizens meet on the second Thursday of each month at the Fire Station, while The Knitting Circle gathers at Orca Restaurant every Wednesday at 9.30am.

Senior Technology offers free help with your computer and cellphone problems, available at 2pm every Thursday at The Raglan Community House. For more details of support for senior citizens contact The Raglan Community House. An update of the Senior Connect Directory will be available shortly. Thank you to all those volunteers that have worked to make a difference for the elderly community in Raglan.

Sundaise Ball a theme party like no other

“Curious Carnival Tales” will be the theme for the Sundaise Ball on Saturday, 11th March at the extraordinary Sundaise Festival.

The theme brings to life the vision of Creative Director, Rachael Stanway who says “Curious Carnival Tales was chosen to evoke and inspire peoples imagination and a sense nostalgia and celebration”. It gives the Sundaise Family (as attendees have been coined) a broad spectrum to interpret for their festival costumes.

“Think glitter, bright colours and carnival,” Stanway explains. “You could dress up as some character from your favourite childhood story, draw ideas from movies like The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and The Labyrinth or take inspiration from old school or modern circus’ and traditional European carnivals.”.

Regular attendees to the biennial Sundaise Festival have waited with anticipation for the Saturday night ball theme announcement so they can start creating costumes and glamping out their campsites to coordinate with the overall festival theme.

“The look and feel of the event this year will be very carnival,” continues Stanway.

“We really encourage people just to let their imagination go with this theme and interpret it however they want.”

“Our face painters will be back again so if you’ve got an idea that includes some face painting then you can go and discuss it with them. You will need to book though as they are always super busy,” she advises.

The Sundaise Ball theme ties in with the overall styling of the festival which, for 2017, will include a new forest walk with mirrors and light installations, brightly coloured art, sculptures, light installations and an overall feeling of exploring a curious carnival.

Stanway, a collector of all things - from carnival-like to French vintage - is excited to bring her own personal style to this year’s event, “Everything will be very bright and eclectic.

There will be lots of interesting things to look at as well as chill-out areas where people can enjoy drinks and nibbles with friends like our lounge suite in the forest which will be surrounded by beautiful lamps and lighting to create a special chill-out zone.”

Held on private farmland deep in the heart of the Waikino Valley, Sundaise is a three-day festival of music, arts and sustainability, with 60+ acts, free camping, free workshops and a awesome kidszone, this community-based event offers a unique atmosphere where families, friends, young and old, collide into a big melting pot of fun and creativity.

With sales limited to one thousand people, tickets are expected to sell out soon.

This week the Chronicle spoke to Jodie Sharples (left) and Zoe Oliver Dowling (right) who have returned from a Trans-Tasman athletics tour.

Tell us about the process of being selected for the tour?

Jodie: We went to a trial at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland in November.

What part of Australia did you go to?

Zoe: We stayed at St Gregory College in Campelltown, Sydney.

What did the tour involve?

Zoe: Every day we would wake up ready for the next adventure, either going to the movies, going to a ribbon day or going to a water park. One day there was a big competition and you competed in your specialties. The day before that we went off with an Australian family who had a child competing in the Trans-Tasman and they took us sightseeing.

Jodie: We had an athletics ribbon day and the main competition day. The rest of the time we went sightseeing and one day one of the Australian athletes took us each out on a ‘Take a Kiwi Out Day’. We also went to Jamberoo water park and had a massive shopping day at McArthur Mall.

How did you go in the events?

Jodie: I completed in 100m, long jump and shotput and my 100m relay team got a silver medal.

Zoe: I got a siver medal in the 4 x 100m

relay. I got into the final for 100m and 200m sprints. I also competed in discus.

What was the highlight of the experience for you?

Zoe: Meeting friends who are now friends for life. Going on the big rides at Jambaroo water park.

Jodie: Getting a medal was a definite highlight and going to Jamberoo water park.

How did it feel to be so far away from home for eight days?

Zoe: It was awesome because it was like a sleepover except you had eight sleepovers in a row!

Jodie: Fun because we were with fr¬iends.

What athletics are you involved with back at home?

Jodie: I go to Frankton Athletics Club, Ribbon Days in the Waikato, and before the trip we went to Porritt Stadium and had sprint training with Barrie Jennings for Youthfit.

Zoe: I go to Hinemoa Athletics Club on Thursdays and I do training with Barrie Jennings at Porritt Stadium on Wednesdays.

What are your preferred events?

Zoe: I love sprinting 100m and 200m.

Jodie: 100m and long jump.

Smoke testing wastewater pipes in Raglan

Working in conjunction with Waikato District Council, contractors will be smoke testing Raglan’s underground wastewater drainage system in the northeast section of town in the coming three months.

Council is looking for faults within the system, such as stormwater downpipes being connected to the wastewater network.

The contractor carrying out the work for Council will need external access to properties for approximately 10-15 minutes each. In most cases you will not need to be home during the smoke testing inspection, however if you do not consent to the inspection or there are any issues with accessing your property such as locked gates or dogs present, then you should contact the contractors Mott MacDonald by email or phone to make alternative arrangements.
