A Raglan West husband and wife have narrowly missed out on making it a double for first locals home in their respective events in this year’s Karioi Classic.

West Coast Health GP Mike Loten finished just out of a top-three finish with a close fourth in the new double buster – a 90 kilometre race twice around the mountain – but his wife Joan missed out by 13 seconds on being first Raglan woman to cross the line in the traditional one-lapper.

That honour instead went to local district nurse Liz Murphy. Her 2 hrs 28 mins 6 secs placed her third in the women’s 17-29 category, while Joan’s 2 hrs 28 mins 23 secs put her fourth in the women’s 40-49 age group.

The first Raglan male home in the 44km one-lapper was Dave Wright. His 32nd placing also put him fourth in the men’s 4049 age group.

A triumph for age and a triumph for youth – that was the long and short of it at the third annual Karioi Classic on Sunday as another large turnout of cyclists took on the gruelling round-themountain challenge, this year in the face of stiff and swirling winds.

Most of the 270-odd mountainbikers, many from out of town and one or two from overseas, competed in the 44km one-lapper where 16-year-old Cambridge lad Sam Gaze put the disappointment of pulling out in the same event two years ago behind him as he headed off two first-timers from Rotorua, 23-year-old Carl Jones and 19-year-old Nigel McDowell.

“The way up was mean,” said Sam in reference to the strong early tailwind up Te Hutewai Road.

But the other placegetters had a different take on the conditions. “The wind was right in your face, it was so hard,” said Carl, who was just a second behind the winner. His Rotorua teammate, who finished another 10 seconds back, also rued the savage northeaster.

“Maybe I’ll do it again next year, it depends on how the wind is.” He had a lone struggle against the elements towards the end and “just caught up with them (the leaders) right at the end on the grass”.

Meantime it was a different story age-wise in the new 90km two-lapper – named the double buster because, perhaps, like a giant hamburger, it was really tough to get through – where two older competitors with a little luck on their side came to the fore.

The long morning’s slog, which began at 7.30 and took the 20 entrants twice around the base of the Karioi, was expected to result in another victory for young Hamilton rider Sheldon Gorter.

But the 22-year-old winner of the past two Karioi Classics suffered a double puncture and pulled out, leaving it to 40-year-old Ben Knight and 35-year-old Carl Van Den Heuvel to fight it out right to the finish line at Raglan airfield.

Ben – who’d travelled up from Masterton for a cyclocross event, part of a national series, at Pukete the previous day – was “absolutely rapt” with a first placing at Raglan to go with his fifth at Pukete. “Carl seemed quite fresh towards the end and I was a little bit worried. But I thought I’d give a sprint a bit of a go.”

The narrower tyres of Ben’s cyclocross bike gave him an advantage on the airfield – a surface which event co-organiser Dirk De Ruysscher warned about in his pre-race briefing – and he pulled out a seven-second winning margin.

“He got me on the grass,” conceded Carl. “It was like riding through mud, the sand base was so soft and springy.”

As he’d caught up with Ben after puncturing 10 kilometres out from the finish, the Te Aroha rider was disappointed not to win. But Carl was still “stoked” with his performance on what he described as an awesome circuit, and said he’d definitely be back next year “to knock the bastard off”.

Raglan’s Mike Loten finished close behind third placegetter Andrew Sudfieldt in the double buster. He was “really happy” with his time of 3 hrs 44 mins – about 20 minutes slower than the winner – in conditions where “you got blown up the first bit, had a struggle with gusts and then it was hell from Te Toto Gorge”. He promised he’d be back again next year but maybe on a singlespeed.

Ironically a single-speeder, Matthew Peploe from Hamilton, took out fifth just behind him. The 37-year-old also graduated to the longer event after a fifth placing last year. Further back in 13th was the only woman to take on the double buster, 34-year-old Aucklander Louise Mark, who was second woman home in the one-lapper last year.

“It’s all been so wonderful, so cool, well organised and with great prizes,” she enthused.

First woman home in the traditional one-lapper this year was teen Amber Johnston in 26th place.

Elephant man flies around mountain Dumbo the elephant supposedly used his ears to fly and Rombo the elephant, aka Raglan man Gareth Jones, had a similar experience in last Sunday’s Karioi Classic.

Gareth says he was almost blown up the hills early on as strong tailwinds filled his giant ears like sails. “It was funny, quite barbaric,” he says.

But he then had to “get low and just keep pedalling” as he faced the strong northeaster head-on along the Whaanga Coast Road on the return journey.

Despite wearing a full elephant suit he was still able to better his last year’s time by exactly a minute, finishing in 52nd place.

The rest of Gareth’s team of 19 had red T-shirts proclaiming “Wearing it for elephants”. Their marathon effort was part of fundraising for the David Sheldick Trust and a real-life Rombo, a two-yearold orphaned elephant now in a Nairobi nursery.

Most pieces are from Otago, including Wakatipu’s Pig and Pigeon Islands along with the magnificent Hawkdun and Dunstan Ranges.

Strong emotional connections to the alpine

Two large wall panels capturing Canterbury’s dramatic mountain landscape from above dominate the tiny home studio of Whale Bay artist Miranda Caird, who hopes the work will win for her an award in this weekend’s NZ Art Show – a three-day “visual feast” of new, emerging and established artists.

Billed as the country’s biggest art exhibition showcasing thousands of works from hundreds of selected Kiwi artists, it’s given Miranda – for several years a general exhibitor – her first shot in the show’s solo panel category

with the Canterbury diptych, entitled ‘Alps Down Under’, up for the $5000 Signature Piece Art Award.

Being a solo panel artist this time around gives Miranda a space where she can hang 15 artworks in all and she hopes to sell every piece. To date the annual exhibition, which is governed

by NZ Affordable Art Trust and is now in its eighth year, has sold about $6 million worth of art and returned most of that to the artists.

To have so many paintings in an exhibition frequented by buyer collectors, as well as a sellout gala evening before the show opens, makes for good exposure, she says.

Miranda, 47, is set to exhibit at the NZ Art Show in Wellington more paintings than she’s had in one place since her exhibitions several years ago at Te Uku Gallery – now Te Uku Roast Office – at a time when local resident Vera van der Voorden provided exposure for emerging artists.

She is grateful for that early support in a painting career which spans almost a decade and has seen many portrayals too of Raglan and Mount Karioi in its different moods. She’s also appreciative of the investment of other locals like the Cravens and friend and neighbour Sandra Ellmers, who have bought much of her work.

Miranda – who sells her work worldwide through NZ galleries and online – recently had her first foray into exhibiting overseas, as a featured artist in two group exhibitions in Camden near Sydney, where she sold seven pieces of art.

Raglan Wharf building to open The new Raglan wharf building

on Wallis Street, will be officially opened on Monday 6 August 2012,

by Waikato District Mayor, Allan Sanson, followed by a public open day.

The public open day organised by Waikato District Council, with support from local Raglan businesses and

community organisations, will be held at the wharf from 1pm to 4pm.

Mayor Sanson said the Raglan wharf building had been missed by the Raglan and wider community since the former 1920s building was destroyed by fire on 13 April 2010.

“Raglan has always been a key destination within our district and the wharf an important focal point for the

community, with all the usual activity associated with a busy working wharf, including fishing, charter and tour boats, as a base for the Raglan Coastguard and the home to a variety of recreational activities,” he said.

Mayor Sanson said he would like to encourage people to come along and see the new Raglan wharf building, which he described as a community asset.

Trail temporarily closes Art for Art’s sake The 18 kilometre long Pipiwharauroa Trail on the Wharauroa Plateau will be temporarily closed to the public during lambing season.

To support stock welfare, the walking and cycling trail which winds over the Te Uku wind farm site and privately-owned farmland will be closed during August and September.

Waikato District Council general manager of Water & Facilities, Richard Bax, said the trail will be temporarily closed to the public to keep the area as quiet as possible during the lambing season.

“This is a very important time in the farming calendar and minimal activity around the stock will help reduce potential stress on ewes and lambs and allow them to better bond.”

He said the formation of the Pipiwharauroa Trail, which takes approximately four hours to walk or two hours to cycle, was only made possible with the co-operation and goodwill of the landowners and that its temporary closure would also benefit the area by allowing a period of plant regeneration for the trail.

Since opening in August 2011 the trail has been popular with walkers and cyclists, particularly over the summer months.

“Whether walking or cycling, people get to experience an outstanding 360 degree view across the greater Waikato when they follow the Pipiwharauroa Trail.

They can also visit the historic site Te Tiho o Tonganui (treasured by local iwi, Ngaati Maahanga) and get close to a number of the 137 metre high turbines in operation on the wind farm.”

Raglan’s Art for Art’s Sake group meets every month to make art for pleasure.

Art for Art’s Sake was formed six months ago with the aim to enjoy, improve and encourage others to discover the enjoyment of artwork. Group coordinator Ro Fawcett has been involved with local Arts and Cultural Groups for many years.

Paintings of two local teens – Zac Hunwick and Indie Ratima – carving up the waves are testimony to his latest interest, and both pieces feature among 10 of Bruce’s artworks on display at Blacksand Cafe this month.

“I didn’t think I could paint water,” admits the one-time signwriter turned fulltime artist whose paintings of classic cars and portraiture have earned him a living for the past 10 years. But now that he’s found he can, he’s keen to explore whether there’s a market for commissioned works in a surfing mecca like Raglan.

Bruce – a former Raglan resident with two children living locally – is no stranger to capturing the mood of the town. One of his local works, a painting of the old Kopua footbridge shortly before its demolition, was quick to sell in Show Off Gallery’s collection a couple of years back.

He’s included in his latest exhibition at Blacksand two Whale Bay scenes and one of Mt Karioi, along with both Marokopa and Tauranga estuaries to vary the interest.

Bruce exhibits in both solo and group shows, and also this month is among 60 featured artists at Rotorua’s Wearable Creationz event.

Fuel pumps outside Te Uku Store could be up and running again within the week in a round-the-clock service aimed at providing an “added level of convenience” to the small rural community – and to late-night or early morning Raglan travellers.

Both Waitomo Petroleum – a Hamilton-based boutique oil company making the investment – and the Four Square store on the same site believe the development can only be a good thing for locals and even the likes of Raglan-bound fishermen needing an early morning fill-up.

The two existing pumps are being replaced and an outdoor payment terminal will be installed, turning the petrol and diesel stop into an unmanned site which can be accessed 24/7 in a similar way to that of Gull stations.

Not that Waitomo Petroleum is in the same playing field as Gull, points out business development manager Jimmy Ormsby who lived in Okete until late last year and saw a need for petrol to be supplied locally.

He believes the service will be complementary to the Te Uku store – which is about to become the only remaining Four Square-branded outlet in the Raglan area – and the adjacent Te Uku Roast Office. “It’ll give that added level of convenience.”

Jimmy says the small second-tier oil company – started by his grandfather back in 1947 and now owned by his father – supports real communities and caters for rural customers. With a dozen or so unmanned diesel truck stops to its credit, the

company is now covering new ground by adding petrol to the mix.

“It’s a bit of a pilot for Waitomo,” he admits, explaining a second company’s been set up to run the unmanned sites and it is this separate entity operating at Te Uku. “Hopefully we’re doing a good thing.”

Upgrading the site’s pumps and adding a payment terminal – which will operate independently of the store – represents a “significant” investment in the future of Waitomo, says Jimmy, which prides itself on being one of the longest-serving privately owned oil companies in the country.

The business does not import or refine oil.

It purchases fuel from Mobil and sells it on to commercial clients and service stations, and now direct to the public at Te Uku. Motorists will be able to access the fuel with eftpos or credit cards, Mobilcard and Waitomo Card.

With the technology already on site it’s been a “convenient” move for the company, adds Jimmy.

It requires only a licence fee to operate the pumps on the property owned by sisters Colleen Finlay and Sandra Kent, who run the store.

Colleen agrees reactivating the pumps “can only be a good thing”. She says the store got them back working about five years ago when Shell pulled out. “We did it for the locals,” she confesses.

But it was uneconomic and the pumps have been idle for about a year now. With “no cashflow” for them in petrol, the pair are now happy to lease their tanks to Waitomo. Edith Symes

Raglan Kindergarten Disco a hit A wonderful time was had at the annual Raglan Kindergarten Disco last Friday night.

Everyone boogied on down to their favourite songs – with Dave Maybee’s expertise in providing the sound system. Lots of people were in fancy dress which really contributed to the fun atmosphere. This was a fundraiser for Raglan Kindergarten and there was delicious food and drinks to buy.

The Kindergarten made $700 which will go towards new plastic deck curtains to extend their

all –weather play area. Thanks to everyone who donated their time, expertise and food as well as all those who helped make the night such a great success – including the clean-up team – ka rawe!

The ‘twin threats’ of strip mining the seabed and deep sea oil in New Zealand waters have never been closer to a reality than right now.

In March this year, when 200 people joined KASM in a silent protest on the Raglan west bridge directed at mining company TTR’s spokesperson, we were told that they planned to submit their application to mine an area off South Taranaki in August.

August is here and we know that TTR, who has exclusive rights to minerals in an area covering 10,000 sq kms of our seabed, has been working hard attracting international money to fund their project, gathering the necessary information for the consent process and equipping themselves with personnel to turn their seabed mining proposal into a seabed mining reality.

The scale of TTR’s overall proposal is nothing less than massive with a target of over 4 billion tonnes of concentrated iron ore and stretching from South Taranaki to the Kaipara Harbour.

This first application may not be directly off the coast here in Raglan but it is a ‘precedent setting’ case. If granted it would clear many obstacles and make it much easier for subsequent applications from TTR and several other foreign owned companies who have rights to mine huge areas within New Zealand waters. They are all waiting for the green light from this first application.

KASM is going to need your help in the coming months.

In addition, Greenpeace has warned that Texan oil company Anadarko is expected to put down its first exploratory well in waters between 230m and 1800m deep in the Taranaki Basin off the coast of Raglan this summer. We haven’t drilled NZ’s seabed in depths more than 200m before.

KASM knows that the vast majority of New Zealanders who are aware of these issues do not want the seabed around our coast mined or drilled.

We know that New Zealanders are a coastal people who dearly love and rely upon our healthy, functioning marine environments for sustaining the kiwi way of life.

Whangamata Sports Exchange

Whangamata Area School and Raglan Area School have been doing a sports exchange every year for the last twenty-six years. We play various sports such as Rugby, Touch, Soccer, Netball, Basketball, Volleyball and Badminton.

This year, Whangamata came to Raglan.

For such a big exchange with so many people, billeting is a huge factor. Going to live with someone unknown for three days is extremely scary and a nerve wracking experience. Taking people in and giving them a bed for a couple of nights is just as scary. Lucky for me, I had two amazing and kind billets!

The sports is really important but I think that meeting new people and making new friends is just as important. I met so many new people and made heaps of new friends.

This year we took out the shield and I hope we can keep it next year as well!

Oh, and did I forget to mention, at the end of the exchange there’s a huge social for all the participants? That was also so much fun!

WEC developments afoot There are important developments at Whaingaroa Environment Centre (WEC), as Bexie and new recruit, Anna, take stock of what is needed to support the people and the environment in Raglan.

Timebank Raglan is now well established, with around 30 members, who offer their particular skills in exchange for the support from others with the skills they need. This is a simple exchange, one hour of your time, for one hour of someone else’s, whether it is fixing your sick gadgets, cutting your lawn, cooking, teaching, babysitting, or giving people lifts.

The Timebank is also looking at ways to

support the Community House, West Coast Health and other community organisations. If you’re keen to be involved as an individual or group, or to find out more, stop into WEC. Anna can also tell you about Warm Curtains for Cold Raglan Homes, which the Environment Centre has taken over from Whaingaroa Affordable Housing Trust. WEC has plenty of free curtains for those who can’t afford them, and would welcome volunteers to sew curtains and put them up. Also - have you seen the door snakes? They’re a great colourful way to stop up nasty draughts from under doors.

WEC is currently taking names for lessons in Practical Sewing; namely mending, alterations and sewing your own curtains.

Sewing machines are available at the centre too. This is a great opportunity to save money: hem coming down, missing buttons or

broken zip? Want to hand down a favourite dress from big sister to little sister? You can get great clothes for next to nothing at Xtreme Waste, and these lessons will teach you how to alter them or make them fit better.

“It’s difficult to make a living out there,” Warren told the Chronicle from the other side of the divvy where he now lives.

But the 28-year-old, who grew up in Raglan, decided a few years ago to “give it a bit of a shot” anyway in the hope of creating a job for himself here after returning from a trip to America – and now he’s selling his second honey harvest, most of which has gone in bulk, destined for the export market.

But some is left for local distribution, and that’s where Bow Street Gallery comes in.

Warren’s father David – a glazier by trade but known downtown for his glass art and his gift and nursery business of more than 20 years – says he’s happy to see a second generation offering product for sale.

The ‘Sweet As Honey’ that’s now in his shop window has been gathered from pasture flowers and kanuka. And it’s good to keep the business in the family, reckons David or Daffy as most locals know him.

There’s a bigger range of honey and bee-related products to come before long, promise the pair. Warren was busy last Sunday working on a more spectacular display – possibly including the workings of a hive – for his summertime launch of the honey at Bow Street Gallery.

Meanwhile he has someone local working on a “Raglan-type” label for him, he revealed.

Warren started out with just 30 hives bought from a retired commercial beekeeper he worked with about four years ago, and then purchased about 50 more from which to breed bees on deciding it was what he really wanted to do. Now things are fair buzzing with 150 hives scattered around the wider Raglan district from Waingaro and Waitetuna to Te Mata and Te Uku. Beekeeping keeps both him and partner Kelsey Bruns very busy tending hives, he says, not only most weekends but often during the week as well when the couple can get to Raglan outside their fulltime jobs.

Warren has developed skills as a beekeeper through his scientifically based job with a Government research company that focuses on pollination for New Zealand’s horticultural industries, of which bees are the biggest component.

And while Kelsey is involved in commercial beekeeping for a living, Warren’s brother Terry who works locally in flooring is now also keen to get in on the act, joining Kelsey at work whenever he can.

Warren reckons their project is a good one and definitely worth pursuing.

But it’s still very “low key”, he adds.

Keeping bees on private property needs to be negotiated with landowners, and sites registered. There’s plenty of other compliances too which mean turning the business into something even sweeter – and fulfilling the dream of work in Raglan – is “a way off yet”, he admits. Edith Symes
