hey say there are health benefits to be had from eating an Indian curry, and that was certainly true in Raglan on Friday night last week.

About 600 people from all walks of life turned up to Raglan Four Square’s curry and culture night, to stand in a long queue for some great food and then sit down across from strangers to enjoy their meal.

The shared dinner was a real event in community building and lifted the spirits of all who attended.

About 200 people queued up for curry at any one time, the line snaking around three long tables that stretched the length of car park.

Diners also sat side by side on the grass bank, enjoying a curry and a chat with new friends.

Four Square owner-operator Satnam Bains said there were people coming and going all night, from 7.30pm to about 10pm.

“It went really well. There was a good turnout,” said Satnam, who took over the Four Square in July last year.

He and his family hosted the curry evening to give back to the community, “who have made us feel welcome”, and to share a bit of their culture.

Satnam’s mum, Shaminder Kaur, spent the day cooking enough curry – chickpea and chicken, Satnam’s favourite – and naan for 700 people, so many took home a doggy bag as well.

Shaminder was noticeably absent at the dinner, with Satnam saying she had gone home because she was tired.

But his father, Tara Singh, welcomed the many guests and helped with the serving up, while Satnan’s wife, Harshi Bains, gave henna tattoos.

“What an extraordinary thing,” said Raglan resident Richard Gemmell, who stopped for a chat in the queue after finishing his meal.

He shook his head in disbelief at the number of people flowing in and out of the car park to share a meal.

Emma Galloway said the evening restored her faith in humanity. “It was a truly generous and delicious gesture.”

Claire Bayley said the dinner was a great way to get the community together and meet new people.

“It was really well organised and really relaxed. It was the perfect time to do it, in winter.

“This family has been so supportive of the community – they support sports teams and now they have done this. It would be good to show our support back to them.”

Dave Hanna, from Ray White, said Satnam was an inspiration to the whole business community.

Ray White Raglan donated six $30 gift vouchers to the best-dressed Indian outfits on the night.

Satnam said he wanted to thank Ray White for the vouchers, Sunset Motel for giving his father a bed for the night, and the 30-40 people who stayed behind to help pack up at the end of the night.

“Next year will be bigger and better,” he promised.

Competition teaches kids hunting and gathering skills

A

competition to encourage kids to learn about hunting and food gathering is being held in Raglan for Queen’s Birthday weekend.

The Ohautira-Waingaro Cannon Ridge Hunters and Gathers Club is holding the second Kids’ Hunting and Fishing Competition, with the weigh-in happening on Sunday at the Raglan Rugby Club in Park Drive on Sunday.

Club chairman Rob Maniapoto said there would be cash prizes for heaviest pig, possum, hare, magpie, rabbit, snapper kahawai and herring, and plenty activities for the kids on weigh day.

Games include kids’ possum, rabbit and pig-carrying races, and Raglan Rock’s Gareth Jones will be teaching kids the art of archery.

“It’s all about the kids,” says Rob, who stresses it is a non-alcohol and drug-free event.

“It’s just based on encouraging kids to learn about hunting and food gathering.

“And we are aiming to give prizes to all of the kids that take part.”

The first hunting and fishing competition held by the club was in 2015, and about 80 kids took part.

“It was a great success,” says Rob. Maori Television show Kai Time on the Road turned up on the day with a Shortland Street actor.

“He had his 10 cents worth and that made the kids happy.”

Rob says for the kids, the competition is all about the prizes.

But there is also the hunting aspect of it.

“Going out with family and friends, being part of that environment, how to prepare that meat after it has been caught.”

Rob says hunting and gathering is “a growing world in New Zealand”.

Its increase in popularity is evident in growing club memberships, “the amount of hunting stores in New Zealand, the amount of trucks with dog boxes, and wherever you go there are kids and adults wearing Ridgeline hunting clothes”.

It is hoped that the competition will become an annual event.

Myrtle rust, which can kill native plants pohutukawa, kanuka, manuka and rata, has been detected in Northland, Taranaki and Te Kuiti nurseries, and Mr Lichtwark says the council has potentially put all of the Waikato at risk by importing 100,000 native trees from Northland for distribution around the region.

The Department of Conservation is urging all growers and planters not to source Myrtaceae species from Northland, Taranaki or the Waikato.

“If it got into Raglan you can imagine what the coast would look like around the mountain – dead. It would be devastating, totally, and change the ecology of the coastal land.

“One of the most likely places it will end up is the divvy, where Comvita planted a load of manuka from Northland.

Of course, with the regional council also bringing in 100,0000 trees from Northland and dispersing them around the Waikato, chances that myrtle rust will spread through the region are very high.”

Mr Lichtwark says myrtle rust, which is being treated as a major biodiversity threat by the Ministry for Primary Industries and has massive repercussions for the kanuka and manuka honey industries, was blown to New Zealand from the Kermadec Islands.

“A third of pohutukawa on Raoul Island in the Kermadecs have died,” says Mr Lictwark.

He says the disease possibly reached the islands from Australia.

Myrtle rust spores are microscopic and can easily spread across large distances by wind, or via insects, birds, people, or machinery.

The spores are thought to be capable of crossing the Tasman Sea from Australia to New Zealand on wind currents.

Severe infestations can kill affected plants and have long-term impacts on the regeneration of young plants and seedlings.

Leaves with myrtle rust in Hawaii Image: Forest and Kim Starr. buds, flowers, and fruit. Bright yellow powdery eruptions appear on young leaves, turning to brown-grey rust pustules. Leaves may become buckled or twisted and die off.

Mr Lichtwark says plants in nurseries are more susceptible to myrtle rust because the plants are generally “weaker stock” that “can’t resist these diseases”.

Seeds germinated in tunnel houses under high humidity might not necessarily survive naturally in the wild, he says.

The nurseries where myrtle rust has been found are under quarantine, and fungicide is being used as a treatment.

Work is being done to trace where materials and products from the nurseries have gone.

About 23 sites, including gardens, have been identified as having myrtle rust, says Mr Lichtwark, but the disease has not yet been found in the wild.

“Eco-sourcing is so paramount,” says Mr Lichtwark, who is the manager of Whaingaroa Harbour Care, which grows native seedlings for riparian planting.

“By having locally sourced plants you are less likely to spread disease.

“There are plenty of local nurseries that are finding it hard to survive because they haven’t got the work.”

The council will consider the sourcing of plants at its next Strategy and Policy Committee meeting on June 27.

Take clear photos. Don’t touch it or try to collect samples as this may increase the spread of the disease. Avoid planting any myrtle species, particularly plants from the regions known to be affected by myrtle rust – Northland, Taranaki and Waikato.

he Raglan men’s championship pennants golf team made it through to the finals in Cambridge on Sunday May 21.

Every second Sunday for the past 12 weeks, a team of six, chosen from a roster of 10 players, have been travelling around

the Waikato playing golf against teams from Morrinsville, Matamata, Te Kowhai, Taumarunui and Horsham Downs.

The Raglan team remained undefeated in pool play and consequently won the Round Robin Trophy with top points.

Unfortunately the men couldn’t maintain the momentum and were beaten in the final.

The following people dedicated their time and effort in representing the Raglan Golf Club: Ken Shea, Steve Hall, Silas Toornstra, Peter Hogg, Scott Klaver, Stuart Mackenzie, Joel Dunstan, Steve Hanham, Glenn Rangitonga and Kevin Klenner.

In other golf news, the Raglan Golf Club is having a Queen’s Birthday tournament on Saturday, June 3, for both 9 and 18-hole players.

The 18-hole event will kick off at 10.30am and the 9-hole at midday.

The tournament is a two person ambrose event and prizes and food are included in the entry fee. Everyone is welcome.

‘Plenty of time’ for school band to be major players

e Major may not have made it to the national finals yet but the band’s seven young musicians, who played at Smokefreerockquest’s Waikato regional finals last Saturday, reckon there’s plenty of time for that.

“Some of us have still got three more years (to compete),” points out Dughall Eadie, who plays lead guitar and keyboard in the Raglan Area School band.

Be Major’s made up entirely of Year 10 and 11 students, and all were still 14 or 15 years old when they performed in Hamilton at the weekend.

Other band members are Sven Seddon on bass, Jack Kirkwood on drums, his twin sister Sasha on vocals and rhythm guitar, lead singer Emily Wiki, Kate Perry on saxophone and Joel Newport on banjo.

A dozen school bands competed all up, from the 30odd that had played in the heats the weekend before.

The local septet were proud to be not only younger than most at the Waikato regional finals but to have one of the biggest bands and – with their sax and banjo players – the most original line-up of instruments.

They all agreed they loved the experience at Clarence St Theatre on the night, with family and friends in the audience rooting for them. The atmosphere was “crazy”, they say, especially in the mosh pit.

Everyone was really supportive and congratulatory, adds Sasha.

For Kate it was a one-off experience. She’s an American exchange student who’s in an instrumental band back home but says she’s never seen or played in a competition like Smokefreerockquest, which is now approaching its 30th year.

It’s New Zealand’s only nationwide, live, original music, youth event and aims to motivate young musicians while also encouraging Kiwis to support original New Zealand music.

Dughall, Emily and Sasha each wrote a song for the event – one of which they say was reggae, another loosely-interpreted as alt-rock and the third was a pop piece. “We don’t really have a (particular) genre,” Dughall admits.

“We like all sorts,” the others chime in. “No preferences … variety.”

Be Major has morphed from the Majestic Unicorns, which also made it through to the regional finals last year. Five of the current line-up were also in the Majestic Unicorns.

“Our rhythm guitarist left, so our singer started playing rhythm,” Dughall explains. “Then we gained a banjo and a sax player.”

The new name came while “thinking of horrible puns”, adds Jack.

The band practise in the music room at school twice a week for three hours all up, and sometimes set up a PA system in one of the school’s courtyards for a gig.

“We get heaps of encouragement at school … so yeah, it’s pretty good,” says Dughall.

The seven-piece also plays “every so often” at the Raglan Musicians Club’s open mic nights downtown at Orca Restaurant & Bar. With this year’s Rockquest behind them, Be Major are now “exploring” ideas for a tour of three local schools – Te Uku, Whatawhata and Te Kowhai.

Their itinerant guitar teacher, Rob Wilson – who is filling in for two terms for longtime area school music teacher Peter Skandera – says they’ll do a few covers and at the same time get their young audiences up and dancing and maybe experimenting with the instruments.

Rob praises Be Major as both dedicated band members and well developed musicians. “They’re as good as you get,” he reckons.

Young golfer selected for Waitetuna School Police comp and PWS awareness national schools tournament

Top image: Congratulations to the senior team from Waitetuna School for their huge effort at the Waikato District Police Competency competition in Hamilton this week. The event involved pushing a police car, finger print analysis as well as water and swimming challenges. Up against 37 teams, Kahu Brunton, Stella Kaiser, Georgie Benseman and Hudson Bidois excelled by coming 1st and won the Trophy, beating Peachgrove Intermediate, reigning champions of the last four years. The winning team will be travelling down to Wellington later in the year, to challenge other North Island winning teams.

aglan Area School student Tommy-Ford Kearns-Westrupp appears to take life in full swing.

The 15-year-old, who has been selected to represent the Central North Island in golf at the National Area Schools Sports Tournament, is bold in his ability with a club.

“Yeah, I’m a natural,” says Tommy, with an infectious, cheeky grin.

He competed at the Central North Island Tournament in Te Awamutu last term and came second, “lost by 10 shots”.

Last year he won the Raglan Area School competition, which is coming up again next week, scoring 47 from nine holes.

“That’s pretty good for someone my age,” he reckons.

About 30 kids will compete in the Raglan competition on Wednesday.

“I might as well leave the trophy at home,” says Tommy, quite confident of his chances of defending his title.

The rangy youngster, who also enjoys rugby, has been playing golf for nearly three years, encouraged by teachers Glenn Rangitonga and Peter Aim. “Yeah, he’s pretty good. He is left-handed but plays a steady game, he’s reasonably accurate,” says Peter Aim, who is also president of the Raglan Golf Club.

Tommy has been part of the club’s junior coaching programme.

“We’re trying to be innovative around junior coaching and free women’s coaching, trying to get people participating and encourage more people up there by having fun events,” says Peter.

He tells Tommy he’d better get out there and practise ahead of the national competition.

Tommy says he started playing golf after his mum took him to the golf course to have a go.

He reckons his mum wants him to get good so he can make a lot of money, and is always at him to “train, train, train”.

“She wants a house! A big one,” he says. “She doesn’t want to work.”

There have been talks about him going to a golf school in California when he’s 18, he says, but that’s a long way down the track for him.

As for the golf, he loves the sport because it is fun and he loves the impact of club hitting the ball, and “being able to get it straight-straight”.

While golf isn’t part of the curriculum at school “we get to focus on a sport if we want to improve in it”.

Tommy keeps a golf club at the school and practices hitting the ball between the posts on the rugby field.

Ten other students from Raglan Area School will also compete at the National Sports Tournament in Whangarei in July.

As chairman of the West Coast Catchments committee I would like to respond to Waikato Regional councillor Fred Lichtwark’s article published on May 4, 2017, in the Chronicle.

I have been chairperson since November 2015 and a member of the West Coast Catchments Committee since 2014. During my time, our committee has operated in as practical a manner as possible, with the resources and information provided to them – we have made decisions based on the costs/ benefits to the entire West Coast Zone, not just particular catchments.

This is why when an opportunity became available to access funding for improving soil conservation in the hill country catchments, the committee was in full support. The photo taken recently, below, illustrates why we need to be working with landowners in these catchments to improve land management.

Sediment plume resulting from the Awakino and Mokau River outlets (Awakino River pictured) The rating increase associated with the Hill Country Erosion Fund project is actually 23%, with the remaining related to an increase in operational spend throughout the West Coast Catchment. All rate payers in the West Coast Zone contribute to the targeted rate. Farmers will receive the greatest rate increase, as the West Coast Zone targeted rate is calculated as a percentage of capital land value. The 52% rate increase translates to $24 for properties with a CV up to $250,000 and $71 for those up to $2 million.

The Waikato Regional Council (WRC) staff presented the committee with three options to consider for meeting the funding requirements for the Hill County Erosion Fund project - they did not make a recommendation, as stated by Cr Lichtwark.

Cr Lichtwark also states that some committee members have voted, despite conflict of interest, to support the project that will allocate funds to their own farms. The projects

I am aware of, that farmer committee members have engaged in, have contracts that have already been entered into with WRC, with terms and conditions no different to that of non-committee land owners (35% WRC funded). Therefore, there would be no personal financial gain to partake in voting on the HCEF funding. The difference in the priority hill catchments of Awakino, Lower Mokau and Mangaotaki is that MPI matches the council funding with another 35%.

I am disappointed to see Cr Lichtwark criticise the West Coast committee in the media this way, considering the democratic process the committee engaged in to make the final recommendation.

He is a member of the committee and was thus able to vote at the workshop. He did not exercise this right and chose to leave early. He was also therefore, unable to observe other committee members voting (as he has stated in his article).

Furthermore, the West Coast Catchment committee is an advisory committee to the Waikato Regional Council. The committee provides advice to the Integrated Catchment Committee (a statutory committee of council), who in turn make recommendations to the Waikato Regional Council. Councillor Lichtwark and his fellow elected councillors are responsible for the final decision as to whether any of these work programmes proceed.

Understanding his role as a councillor and the terms of references of the committees that he sits on would be very beneficial to him becoming an effective councillor for the region.

As members of west coast local communities, we are willing to stand on the committee (in our own free time) because we are passionate about our communities, catchments, district and region.

Intention to review Reserve Management Plan

Waikato District Council is intending to review the Reserve Management Plan for The Point Reserve in Ngaruawahia. Management Plans are produced to outline the future use, management and development (as funding becomes available) of reserves. Council, under s4I of the Reserves Act 1977, wishes to invite written suggestions on the plan. All suggestions received will be considered for inclusion when the reserve management plan is reviewed. A draft reserve management plan will be made available for public submission later in the year.
