THE GOVERNMENT has pledged an extra £15 billion in defence funding to boost Britain’s Armed Forces and secure the future for the Global Combat Air Programme. The programme to build the RAF's sixth-generation fighter is to receive £8 billion over the next four years, while the UK’s drone programme will receive £5 billion in funding. Defence chiefs have pledged to raise spending on munitions and weapons to £11 billion, including longrange strike weapons, lowcost cruise missiles and oneway UAVs. The announcement will see an increase in defence funding from £54 billion a year under the previous government to almost £80 billion a year by 2029, with the UK’s defence spending increasing to 2.7 per cent of GDP. The uplift will also create nearly 60,000 extra direct and indirect UK industry jobs by the end of the decade, taking forecasted defence spendingrelated jobs supported in the UK to more than half a million, the government said. ● Continued on page 2
