TECHNOLOGY CORNER Billy O Meara (HRI Services)

Billy simplifies and explains Todays Technology Question:

How can I get free TV channels?

There are different ways to get free TV channels, they are free to air channels which are been transmitted from satellite so if you have an existing Sky satellite dish and you cancel your subscription you will still receive channels although limited. Some of the older boxes can give you more if you take out your viewing card and plug it out from the wall and plug it in after 30 seconds you should see a change in your guide. Another way Is install software on your laptop or an android box called Kodi, if configured correctly you can get free TV channels. Question:

What is the difference between Freesat and Free to Air?

T: 087 – 9449446 www.maureenschildcarecentre.com

All channels that are available for freesat are also available on free to air. The main advantage is with freesat is you have a 7-day guide and the channels will automatic update for example when a free to air receiver loses a channel you have to find the new frequency and then tune it in again but with a freesat box you don’t. If new channels become available, you will get them automatically There is a freesat recorder also available which can record one channel and watch another and it also have a series link feature. You will have more channels in a free to air but it will need to keep it up to date.

Leading forecourt convenience retailer, Maxol, has announced it has secured a contract with the Munster based Garvey Group to become the fuel supply partner to their three service station outlets, located in Castleisland, Co Kerry, Newcastle West, Co Limerick and Dungarvan in Waterford. Speaking about the latest announcement, Brian Donaldson, incoming L-R: Kevin McCarthy, Managing Director, the Garvey Group & CEO of Maxol commented, “We are extremely pleased to have won Dermot Cogan, Regional Manager, Maxol. the contract to be the fuel supply partner to The Garvey Group and warmly welcome Kevin McCarthy Managing Director, Jim Garvey Finance Director and their team to the Maxol network. “The Garvey Group is a very successful and admirable family business, and is one of the most innovative retail groups in the Munster region. This new supply partnership strongly endorses the investment that Maxol has been making in repositioning our brand in recent years and adds three new high quality forecourts to our expanding network. We look forward to growing together and continuing to go above and beyond when it comes to providing a quality offering to our customers.” Kevin McCarthy, Managing Director, the Garvey Group, commented, “Maxol has been investing heavily in its business in recent years and we feel it is the best fit in terms of fuel brand for The Garvey Group, as we too continue to invest in our business. IMPROVED HEARING ENHANCES QUALITY OF LIFE IN MODERATE DEMENTIA It has been reported that early findings in a new study suggest that the quality of life is improved in impaired listeners diagnosed with moderate dementia by treating hearing loss with hearing aids, as well as the quality of life of the caregiver. The study by the University of North Texas and Unitron, a global manufacturer of advanced hearing solutions, is being conducted by Amyn M. Amlani, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of North Texas, in partnership with Brian Taylor, Au.D., Director of Practice Development and Clinical Affairs at Unitron.

Improvement In Cognitive Ability Using Hearing Aids

The researchers have already been able to show some improvement in cognitive ability among participants using hearing aids. This is certainly suggestive that there may be new therapeutic potential for hearing aids in cases of dementia. If the early results are found to be conclusive, the findings could enhance the role of hearing healthcare professionals in the rehabilitation of patients diagnosed with cognitive decline in relation to his or her hearing. Dr. Amlani said, “This study looks at whether improved hearing can improve cognitive functioning for people who have already been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia, In particular, we want to understand whether better hearing can play a role in helping people with dementia lead more active and engaged lives, particularly if hearing loss is identified and treated early.”

Previous studies have found that people with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time in comparison to those with normal hearing. There are currently many studies ongoing in relation to hearing loss and neuro degenerative disease, but no data yet exists showing that the effects of dementia can actually be lessened through the use of hearing aids. Brian Taylor said, “Given the expected sharp increase in dementia cases over the next few decades, our findings could have significant implications for aging individuals as they begin experiencing hearing loss, Unitron is focused on providing solutions for healthcare providers so they can better serve their patients, and get them the treatment they need.” The study includes adults 50-90 years’ of age with moderate dementia who are inexperienced with amplification devices. It measures speech-recognition performance in noise, cognition and self-reported improvements in quality of life. HEALTHY RECIPES for 2016

RED AS A BEETROOT!

Beetroots ,a delicious and earthy vegetable with their bright colour....they are often overlooked! Absolutely fantastic in salads and as a vegetable on its own. So here are two dishes with these delightful veggies .Don’t forget you can get all the recipes and much more on www.traleeculinarygangsters.wordpress.com

LEMONY BEET AND BEET GREEN SALAD

BEET-AND-APPLE SALAD

Buying beets with the beet greens still attached is like getting two ingredients in one. To turn them into this fabulous salad, roast the beets until they’re sweet, blanch the greens until they’re tender, then toss both with olive oil, lemon and anchovies

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

3 pounds baby beets with their greens, 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest, plus more for garnish Salt Freshly ground black pepper 12 marinated white anchovies

METHOD 1.

2.

3.

Preheat the oven to 160°. Cut the greens from the beets and discard the stems. Put the beets in a small roasting pan and add 1/2 cup of water. Cover the roasting pan with foil and bake for about 45 minutes, until the beets are tender. Let cool, then peel the beets and slice them crosswise ¹/3 inch thick. In a large saucepan of salted boiling water, cook the beet greens until they are bright green and just tender, about 2 minutes. Drain the greens and let them cool. Lightly squeeze out the excess water from the greens and coarsely chop them. In a large bowl, combine the olive oil with the lemon juice and the 1/2 teaspoon of lemon zest; season with salt and pepper. Stir in the sliced beets. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the beets to plates. Add the greens to the bowl, season with salt and pepper and toss with the remaining dressing in the bowl. Transfer the greens to the plates along with the white anchovies. Garnish with lemon zest and serve.

• • • • • • • • •

4 large beets (2 1/2 pounds) 5 thyme sprigs 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling Salt and freshly ground pepper 1/4 cup apple-cider vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 3 tablespoons prepared horseradish 1/3 cup salted pistachios, chopped 1 green apple, thinly sliced

METHOD 1.

2.

Preheat the oven to 160°. In a baking dish, lightly drizzle the beets and thyme with olive oil. Season with salt and pepper. Cover with foil and roast until the beets are tender, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. Let cool, then peel the beets and cut them into 3/4-inch dice. In a large bowl, whisk the vinegar with the mustard. Whisk in the remaining 1/2 cup of oil until emulsified. Add the horseradish and season with salt and pepper; toss with the beets and pistachios. Transfer the beets to a platter, top with the apple and serve.

Bexblah Beauty

This page is sponsored by Munster Robes & Kitchens Hello my beautiful friends! I hope you’re all having a fabulous week! I don’t know if I mentioned this, but I am in the process of getting my ITEC qualification, this means in June, I will be a fully qualified Makeup Artist and I can work anywhere in the world! So I thought this week I’d do a little backstory all about my ‘education’ etc. Because I know the Leaving Cert is around the corner and god knows I didn’t have any idea what I wanted to do. So this week’s column is a little different but still relatable. Rewind to 2012, I was in sixth year, no idea what I wanted to do, told by many different people I should do ‘A broad course’ just to have the degree. So I did a BA in European Studies in UL, it was my first choice, I got it, went to UL, quickly figured the only part of the course I enjoyed was the languages part, which was small, so I left UL. I know not everyone loves their college course, but 19 year old didn’t want to not love it. So I took a year out, a year in which my love for all things beauty and makeup started. September 2013 came around, I went to the IT Tralee to do Computer Science with Mobile App Technology. I was always good at computers, why not! It was in that course where I thrived in the Web Design and Photoshop aspects, Java and writing code… not so much! For anyone who can write code, I applaud you. It’s not easy. During the first year of that course I started BexblahBeauty and writing for the Tralee Advertiser, finally, something I loved! I applied what I had learned to create and design my blog myself and edit all my photos etc. I finished the year in that course but decided not to continue. This brings us to May 2014. I decided to go to California on a J1 with my friends(well I was on a Holiday Visa) and had the most amazing summer whilst still writing for my blog and The Tralee Advertiser! We lived in San Diego for 3 months and I honestly would go back

there in the morning if I could. If you’re in college and considering going on a J1, GO TO SAN DIEGO. You will not be disappointed. For the rest of 2014 & some of 2015 I worked at home, with the view of moving to Dublin in September 2015. I didn’t fully know what I wanted to do, but I knew moving was a good idea. I didn’t want to be stuck.

2016. I finally had an epiphany. I spend most of my time and money on makeup and beauty, why not get a qualification in it! I taught myself how to do makeup, I watched endless YouTube videos and still do. But I feel like it’s always good to have a qualification in whatever you want to do. In the course I am doing now, we are learning so much more than just how to apply makeup. We’re learning about the importance of hygiene in Makeup Artistry, different makeup for different face and eye shapes and so much more. I feel like if I’m a Makeup Artist charging clients I should have the utmost knowledge about what I am doing.

So in hindsight, what would I have done if I was back in Sixth Year? Obviously I wouldn’t change anything because it’s my own personal journey, not the most straightforward or conventional but still, I learned a lot and I’m still only 22. If you don’t know what you want to do, I 100% recommend taking a year out. Personally I think there is too much focus on just going to college to get a degree as fast as possible. I know people who rushed into any course just because and most have either changed courses or stayed in it for the sake of it and then went on to do what they actually wanted. Listen to your gut. I’m not saying I’m a success story(yet). But I am saying that if you really have a passion for something and you’re good at it, make a career out of that. Success is infinite; anyone can have it if they work hard enough. Also a little side note, I will be in Tralee on Friday 27th of May and Saturday the 18th of June and I am taking makeup appointments for those two dates. If you have any enquiries, message me on my Facebook page ‘Bexblah’ or email me at bexblahbeauty@gmail.com. If you have any other date you would like to book me for, email me saying the date etc and I will let you know if I will be available!

Stay Gorge,

Bexblah. Attention BexBlah Readers!

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO MY STRONG FRIENDS! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK! For me, this week has a strong significance, why, because May last year was… a great month really, but it’s also when I completely disregarded all the hard work I did for my 21st. I had a lot of celebrations last year between friends’ birthday s, going out in general, and just not even thinking about the gym or my goals. So, this May I am making a conscious effort to do better. As I said last week, I have goals that I want to stick to. So that means for May, I’m going to make an effort to make 90% of my own meals and not consume much, if any alcohol. With alcohol, I notice that I feel SO bloated and sluggish and tired and just not good afterwards, so why even bother? I’m not saying I won’t have a night out or two, but I’ll just be more conscious. For anyone wondering, yes I eat carbs, and fats and protein. The only food I have eliminated from my diet is cow’s milk which I’ve replaced with unsweetened almond milk. I also don’t eat much red meat, but that’s not for any particular reason, I just love turkey burgers at the moment! So this is what a typical day looks like…. Kind of… No I don’t eat a set amount of meals per day, I don’t have 6 small ones or three big ones. I eat according to my schedule and when I feel hungry. What’s really important is the total amount of calories, carbs, fats and protein you consume in a day. If you want to get leaner and lose some body fat, don’t be stressing over meal times and how many times you have to eat. Just focus on eating enough of the right foods and drinking lots of water and the rest will fall into place. BREAKFAST – So my breakfast is only small if it happens before my gym session. I have started working out in the morning and I really enjoy it. If I am doing fasted cardio, it will happen after. So for this day I’m going to have something small as my ‘Breakfast’ before the gym. 2 egg omelette with 1 turkey rasher , 1 baby potato and a spinach rocket mix on top. POST WORKOUT MEAL – 1 Scoop of MyProtein Vanilla Whey mixed with 200ml of Unsweetened Almond Milk. LUNCH – Bagel slim with lightest Philadelphia, avocado, smoked salmon and an egg. (MY FAVOURITE MEAL) SNACK – Depending on the day, if I find myself hungry between lunch and dinner I’ll have a snack, maybe a fulfil protein bar because they’re fab! Fulfil Protein Bar. DINNER – Turkey burger, white baby potatoes or sweet potatoes(depending on what I feel like), laughing cow light and spinach & rocket mix. SNACK – Again depending on the day, if I feel like something sweet after dinner I’ll have another snack. Glenisk Vanilla 0% fat yoghurt with strawberries, raspberries and dark chocolate. I am not telling you that you should eat what I eat, this is just what works for me. You need to eat according to your weight, height, gender and goals. So if you’re unsure what to eat, go to someone who knows, either a personal trainer or a nutritionist.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL KERRY WELCOME’S THE “LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER” PROGRAMME

The Oncology Unit in University Hospital Kerry has been open since 2001. It is a satellite unit of Cork University Hospital. The Oncology service in Kerry is evolving and is reflective of international trends with activity increasing yearly due to an aging population and the impact of improved treatments. In 2015 alone there were over 6,700 patients seen and treated by both the Oncology Outpatients and the Oncology Day Units. The Oncology Unit is run by a very dedicated nursing staff who have extensive clinical knowledge and expertise in this very specialised area. Kerry has a unique model of care whereby the same cohort of nurses run the Oncology Day Unit and also the Oncology Outpatients Clinics. This provides patients and their families with continuity of care and is very reassuring as staff will be extremely familiar with all aspects of their care. Due to the increasing demand for Oncology services in Kerry we have outgrown the current unit facilities and are in the process of looking to relocate within the hospital in order to provide a purpose built facility where patients can be treated with compassion, respect and dignity at all stages of the treatment process. The unit is delighted to be involved with “Look Good Feel Better”. Patients that attend the Oncology services are going through what can be one of the most traumatic times in their lives and the Look Good Feel Better Programme is providing an escape from reality. It allows the ladies to leave their illness behind for a short time and relax in the company of other women and be pampered by a team of beauty professionals. Look Good Feel Better also provides the women with practical tips on how to manage their changed appearance following the side effects of their treatments. It is a positive, friendly and relaxed atmosphere which can help women regain their identity and self esteem. The Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) Programme is an international charity operating in 26 countries. The aim is to help women combat the visible side effects of cancer treatment. LGFB is supported by companies in the cosmetics industry who provide donations in the form of products and of course the expertise of their volunteer beauty consultants. It is because of their generosity that LGFB is able to help over 1,000 Irish women each year through workshops. This unique programme of free skincare and makeup workshops is now available at University Hospital Kerry thanks to mother and daughter team Clair McEvoy and Leonie Flaherty who were instrumental in bringing forward the proposal of having this service available to the women of Kerry. We spoke with Leonie who says “Our first workshop took place on Monday 18th of April where we had 10 ladies attend. It was both an emotional and proud moment to see the months of meetings and preparations finally pay off and to see how much enjoyment our ladies got from their session. The basic thinking behind LGFB is that if you look good, it can help you to feel better and this is recognised by the different medical professions involved in patient care and treatment’’. Clair would like to thank the support they have received to date and says “We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic team of volunteers willing to give their time and expertise to this project every month, and also a huge thank you to Tara O’Halloran from FAS for coming on board and helping with fundraising”

One of them says, “ We are trying to determine the height of the pole.” So the blonde quickly opens her purse, removes a spanner, unscrews the bolts and lays the pole flat on the ground. She then pulls out a measuring tape, measures the distance between the two ends, AND YOU THOUGHT BLONDES WERE DUMB... tells it to the two men and walks away. A blonde and a lawyer are seated next to each other on After hearing this one man tells the other, a flight from LA to NY. “What an idiot! We ask for the height and she The lawyer asks if she would like to play a fun game? gives us the length!”

TWO MEN ARE OUT IN THE WOODS WHEN ONE OF THEM SUDDENLY COLLAPSES.

His eyes are foggy and he doesn’t seem to be breathing. The other guy whips out his phone and dials 911. He screams into the phone, “Help! Help! My friend is dead! What do I do?” The operator says, “Sir, please calm down. I can help. First, make sure your friend is actually dead.” There is a brief pause, and then a loud bang. “OK, now what

KING OF THE JUNGLE.

A lion woke up one morning feeling really rowdy and mean. He went out and cornered a small monkey and roared, “Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?” The trembling monkey says, “You are, mighty lion! Later, the lion confronts a ox and fiercely bellows, “Who is the mightiest of all jungle animals?” The terrified ox stammers, “Oh great lion, you are the mightiest animal in the jungle!” On a roll now, the lion swaggers up to an elephant and roars, “Who is mightiest of all jungle animals?” Fast as lightning, the elephant snatches up the lion with his trunk, slams him against a tree half a dozen times leaving the lion feeling like it’d been run over by a safari wagon. The elephant then stomps on the lion till it looks like a corn tortilla and ambles away. The lion lets out a moan of pain, lifts his head weakly and hollers after the elephant - “Just because you don’t know the answer, you don’t have to get so upset about it!”

The blonde, tired, just wants to take a nap, politely declines and rolls over to the window to catch a few winks. The lawyer persists and explains that the game is easy and a lot of fun. He explains, “I ask you a question, and if you don’t know the answer, you pay me $5.00, and vice versa.” Again, she declines and tries to get some sleep. The lawyer, now agitated, says, “Okay, if you don’t know the answer you pay me $5.00, and if I don’t know the answer, I will pay you $500.00.” This catches the blonde’s attention and, figuring there will be no end to this torment unless she plays, agrees to the game. The lawyer asks the first question. “What’s the distance from the earth to the moon?” The blonde doesn’t say a word, reaches into her purse, pulls out a $5.00 bill and hands it to the lawyer. “Okay” says the lawyer, “your turn.” She asks the lawyer, “What goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four legs?” The lawyer, puzzled, takes out his laptop computer and searches all his references, no answer. He taps into the air phone with his modem and searches the net and the library of congress, no answer. Frustrated, he sends e-mails to all his friends and coworkers, to no avail. After an hour, he wakes the blonde, and hands her $500.00. The blonde says, “Thank you,” and turns back to get some more sleep. The lawyer, who is more than a little miffed, wakes the blonde and asks, “Well, what’s the answer?” Without a word, the blonde reaches into her purse, hands the lawyer $5.00, and goes back to sleep. And you thought blondes were dumb.

TORQUING CARS! DRIVER CRASHES NEW £215,000 MCLAREN JUST 10 MINUTES AFTER TAKING DELIVERY

It was tree 1, supercar 0, as one of the most exclusive British supercars just became a little less common after the new owner of a McLaren 650S managed to crash it 10 minutes after taking delivery of it. The accident happened in Essex last week. Neighbours reported seeing the man celebrating with a bottle of champagne as the new car arrived at his house. But within minutes the sleek lines of the £215,000 supercar had been reduced to a mangled lump of carbon-fibre and metal after the driver lost control and ploughed into a tree. The 650S features a twin-turbocharged V8 engine and can hit 60mph in less than 3sec. Acceleration is so fierce that it will reach 100mph in the time most family cars take to reach 30mph (5.7sec) and can continue all the way up to a top speed of 204mph. No-one was injured in the crash last Wednesday, but police have appealed for information from anyone who may have witnessed the McLaren being driven before the crash. They say enquiries are on-going to determine who was driving the car at the time.

WHY YOU SHOULDN’T USE WASHING-UP LIQUID TO WASH YOUR CAR

Bank holidays and weekends in general are traditional times to wash your car, and although 43 per cent of UK & Irish drivers still prefer to do it themselves rather than use a car wash, almost half still use washing-up liquid - with potentially damaging effects to paintwork. The bleach and ammonia contained in washing-up liquid break down the wax that is applied to the paintwork to protect it. Once that protective layer is damaged, modern water-based paints can turn dull and, in extreme cases, start to crack. Car cleaning products purveyor Simoniz has revealed the results of its research into the UK’s car washing habits. It says that despite the ever increasing number of hand car wash and valet operations, 43 per cent of the 1,012 car owners surveyed still prefer to wash their own car. However, the survey also revealed that 41 per cent of those who clean their own car use washing-up liquid rather than a specific car shampoo - and in so doing could be doing just as much damage as neglecting to wash their car at all. It may sound like a plausible argument: “If it cleans my dishes, it must be able to clean my car.” The fact is washing up liquid contains all kinds of chemicals that are capable of harming a car’s paintwork. Simoniz warns that continued use of washing-up liquid could damage the resale value of your car if the paintwork is faded or contains fine scratches and swirls. “Those using washing up liquid to clean their car’s exterior should understand that it will contain a grease-removing agent which removes the wax and could make a real mess of the bodywork.”

MINDER CARS SOLD AT AUCTION

Cars driven by TV’s most famous second-hand car dealer, Arthur Daley, and his sidekick Terry McCann in the TV series Minder fetched £32,000 and £52,000 respectively at auction on April 20. Daley’s 1981 Daimler Sovereign and McCann’s Ford Capri Mk2 were sold by H&H Classics at its sale at the Imperial War Museum, Duxford. Play!01:35 The Daimler has recently been refinished in its original livery as part of a recent bodywork restoration and also received £5,000 worth of mechanical fettling by a marque specialist. Its odometer displays just 43,990 miles. The Daimler Sovereign, complete with suitably cheesy cardboard cut-out of Arthur Daley According to H&H Classics, actor George Cole who portrayed the loveable rogue Arthur Daley in the series, wanted to buy the car himself, and came close to doing so before it was given away in a TV Times competition. It was estimated to sell for £35,000 to £45,000 so just scraped towards the lower end of its perceived value. The interior of Arthur Daley’s 1981 Daimler Sovereign Alongside the Daimler was its automotive partner, a 2.0-litre Ford Capri Mk2 driven by the ‘minder’ of the show’s title, Terry McCann, played by Dennis Waterman. The Ford was not only driven by Terry in the opening sequence but also at various times during the series. The Capri is believed to have come close to being crushed but escaped and, now rejuvenated, shows 88,700 miles on the clock. It was estimated at £65,000 to £85,000 and was potentially a new world record for a 2.0-litre Capri, a clear indication of the power of celebrity and provenance as well as solid values for Ford Capris in general. A Mk3 3.0-litre Capri driven by Lewis Collins as Bodie in The Professionals fetched £55,000 at the same auction - a world record for the model - against an estimate of £35,000 to £45,000. 36

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR THE UNDERDOG IS THE TOP DOG: For those of us involved in sport we will all have at some staged experienced the thrill of winning. I say most because there are some life long suffering supporters who don’t get that chance to feel that thrill.

This week Leicester City players, officials and supporters are beginning to understand exactly what the club has achieved. From 5000/1 to win the Premier League and favourites to be relegated to getting the better of the Manchester City’s, United’s, Arsenal, Liverpool etc and to win it with two games to spare is even more impressive. So how did they do it? Well I believe what the Kerry Schoolboys League achieved last June at the Kennedy Cup gives us an insight into how Leicester City achieved what they did. Now of course the Kennedy Cup is 6 games over a week while the Premiership is over 38 games. But Kerry went into the Kennedy Cup last June as a mid-table team that people would probably have said would finish in the group between 9th and 16th with the possibility of taking a top 8 slot. But the DDSL were the Manchester City or United of the Kennedy Cup having won 11 of the last 12 competitions. But Kerry put together a squad of very good players, without probably the one or two outstanding players that sometimes garner the spotlight. Leicester City might have Vardy or Mares but in truth it was all about the squad rather than the individual. Kerry had a backroom set up that the players bought into as so did the Leicester players this year. Raneiri spent most of the season taking the pressure of his players. First it was can we get to 40 points, then it was a Top 6 and European football, then a Champions League spot and it was only in the last weeks that the talk about winning the title came up. This is a lesson than many coaches can learn. Set realistic goals and work towards them and when they look like being achieved move up to the next goal.

then winning the quarter final and only on Wednesday evening once we had qualified for the semi-final was there talk about being two games from the ultimate reward. And yes we needed a rub of the green during the tournament and so did Leicester. Games that looked like they were getting away from them turned on a substitution or a breakaway goal or an opposition miss. In Kerry’s campaign we went to 26 penalties against the Desmond League and we were behind a few times but things were written in the stars somewhere and we got the win! Finally the big day came and the might of the DDSL were on the opposite side of the field. But at this stage we had the momentum. Leicester came into the season with momentum having had a great finish to last season taking 27 from 29 points to just avoid relegation. They took this into the new season. At the Kennedy Cup we got the goal we needed and defended with huge heart and determination to take the trophy. That feeling at the final whistle is one that those of us involved will never forget. I can imagine in some small way how the Leicester players were feeling last Monday night. It must have been a long 90 minutes as they were not involved and therefore could not do anything to influence the outcome. They did have the fall back of knowing there were two more game. It is only after the euphoria dies down and players are on their own that the true magnitude of what they has achieved will only begin to sink in. I remember walking back to the team house in UL after doing some post Kennedy Cup media and it was then that I really realised that we had won the Kennedy Cup for the first time in its 40 year history and became the first rural League to do so. The Leicester players will all have their own moments when they are alone and that smile of satisfaction and achievement will break out. That is something they will never forget. The public celebrations are great but those private moments will never be forgotten. I hope many more players and officials both locally, nationally and internationally will get to experience that feeling.

At the Kennedy Cup Brendan Hogan and the coaches never talked about winning the tournament, It was about winning the group,

STAR ON THE HARDWOOD: I am sure Rus Bradburd will forgive me for reworking the title of his excellent book ‘Paddy on the Hardwood’. His excellent book tells the coaches story of moving from the US to take over Frosties Tralee Tigers. If you haven’t read it I would recommend you get a copy. Bradburd spent two years in Tralee and the book looks at the clubs characters on and off the court from Junior Collins to William Main and onto to the players who he said on the court were tough vigorous players who “would play with their ears bleeding”. But getting them on the court was another matter as “they might miss a game because their cousin’s brother-in-law’s baby was being christened”! The book was written in 2006 so why write about it now? Well those times were amongst the halcyon days of basketball in Tralee and indeed in Kerry when the Tralee /Killarney SuperLeague battles were something that were pencilled into diaries at the start of the season. Now it looks like those days could be coming around again – at least in Tralee. Kieran Donaghy and Terry O’Brien certainly know the game from on and off the court and are amongst those behind the Warriors that plan to bring SuperLeague basketball back to Tralee. They will use Imperials and St Brendan’s as feeder clubs and this will give the best players a pathway to the top without leaving home. American coach Mark Bernsen will be back in Tralee as coach of the side. He was working with Imperials but had to leave midseason due to flooding in his home in the US. Donaghy summed up the feelings of all basketball fans when he said that “this is not just about a top basketball team but it’s about creating an atmosphere and bringing the sports complex to live again at the weekends.” And so say all basketball fans. Now the search is on to find a sponsor and with Tralee doing well hopefully that will happen too. ST BRENDAN’S AGM: The St Brendan’s Basketball AGM takes place tonight, May 6th, in Moyderwell at 7.30pm. All are welcome and the club would especially love to welcome any new parents who would like to get involved. There are also plenty of positions open for anyone wishing to volunteer. CAPTAIN DAIRE: Well done to Daire Kennelly who became the first player from Mounthawk to captain Ireland in basketball. He did so against Scotland during the week. JIMMY IN HALL OF FAME: Well done to Jimmy Diggins who has been inducted into the Basketball Coaches Hall of Fame. ST BRENDAN’S OAKPARK COMMUNITY GAMES: Athletics: The area athletics evening is being held this week, on Thursday, at Na Gaeil with races from everyone one from tiny tots to u16 boys and girls. Those that qualify will go forward to the County Finals which goes ahead this year on June 11th and 12th at An Riocht. Gymnastics: Anyone interested in gymnastics should contact 087 2474684 or 0878568887 immediately and please note the venue has been changed to Currow on May 15th starting at 11am.

In the U16 Limerick League it was Causeway 4.0 to Granagh/ Ballingarry’s 2-06 and Cillard 1.09 Ballyagran 6.06. In the Limerick Minor League B final Causeway defeated Kilmallock 6.09 to 5.06 after extra time. Clanmaurice won the Senior Relegation Final defeating Cluain Deary 3.11 to 1.09. In the u14 Round 2 Cillard came out on top against Causeway. This was a reversal of the first round result the week before so it will go to a 3rd round decider in order to see who comes out on top and goes forward to represent Kerry at Feile nan Gael 2106. In the Limerick U16 League semi-final Causeway play Monaleen this Friday with the venue not known yet.

STACKS AND BALLYMAC WIN IN CENTRAL LEAGUE: There were two finals in the Kelliher’s Toyota Central Region u16 football competition with Austin Stacks defeating Castleisland Desmonds 2-14 to 1-10 in the Division 1 final and Ballymac winning 1-12 to 0-14 over Ardfert. In the Division 1 final Stacks played with the aid of a strong breeze and used to conditions to open a gap. Castleisland rallied but Stacks defence were excellent and they help out to take the win. Sean Quilter was awarded Man of the Match and Gearoid Sheehan accepted the winner’s trophy on behalf of his team. The Division 3 final was a cracker with Ballymac just beating Ardfert by 1 point. Ardfert dominated the first half and were ahead by 4 points at the break. However Ballymac hit an early goal and two points to seize the advantage and they just got over the line. Daire Keane of Ballymac was the Man of the Match and captain Barry Lyons accepted the trophy. PARNELLS NEWS: Tralee Parnells will launch their Healthy Club and Strategic Plan in Caherslee This Friday May 6th at 7.30pm and all are welcome. Parnells u14’s/u15 camogie travelled to Killarney to take on the home side and after a very enjoyable encounter the Tralee side took the win. The two teams will have to battle it out again to see who will be crowned Feile na nGael B winners. The club was delighted have members on hand to cheer on the Kerry hurlers in their great win. 14’s bow out of Feile but with pride: The u14’s put in two very good performances against Crotta (going down 2-1 to 1-2) and Lixnaw (2-4 to 2-1) in two very tight games. With qualification not possible the third game was used to give fringe players game time and they performed well. While it’s a pity not to qualify this side has come a long way in a few weeks. On that occasion they were unable to field a team but now they had 19 players on duty. Parnells u16: They 16’s travelled to Balyheigue and were a little behind their hosts despite some good individual performances. There are some players to come back into the squad that will strengthen it. ST PAT’S NEWS: There was no winner from the Lotto numbers drawn 1,9,15 and 19 and the next jackpot will be e5,9000 with the draw in O’Dwyer’s Bar on Sunday night. Dingle Way Challenge: Bookings are now open for the Dingle Way Challenge that takes place on Sunday, June 5th. Juvenile Academy: There will be no Academy this week as the club hosts its Annual Mass. The Mass will take place at St Brendan’s Church, Curraheen this Sunday at 11am and will be followed by a Bake Sale. This is an important date in the clubs calendar. The u8’s, 10’s and u12’s all trained this week and the u8’s hosted a Blitz this week. The u10’s had a busy week and played against Ardfert, Churchill and Ballyheigue in the Go Games. The u12’s played against Laune Rangers and Annascaul / Lispole and both games showed the boys and girls continued improvement. The u14’s played against Finuge at home and put in a great display. There was nothing between the sides in the first half but Finuge took over in the second period. The Girls train on Friday’s at 2.30pm which is a new date and time. The Seniors played a challenge game against Naomh Aban from Cork and it was a great workout before the Junior Premier Club Championship when they take on Glenbeigh/

Glencar this Sunday at 2.30pm KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NOTES: The Seniors had an important win in the Senior Club Championship Relegation Play Off when they defeated Milltown/Castlemaine 4-11 to 2-12. The game was played in Farranfore and it was an explosive start to the second half that swung the game in Rahilly’s favour. Rahilly’s got off to the perfect start when Kevin Walshe goaled after only a minute. However their opponents replied with 6 unanswered points to leave the half time score of Rahillys 1-02 to Milltown/ Castlemaines 0-07. A Barry John Keane goal in the second half set the Tralee side on the way to victory. This win secures Championship status for 2017. Underage: Underage training continues at the normal times this weekend as do the underage and Girls and Ladies teams. Lotto: There was no winner of the jackpot from the numbers drawn 9,13,16 and 19. The next jackpot will be e2,100. STACKS STORIES: The underage players are really looking forward to the summer and train as usual this week. Two Camps: The club will host the Bord na nOg Cul Camp in Connolly Park on the week of July 4th to 8th and the clubs own summer camp will take place from August 2nd to 6th. The u14’s needed only a draw from their away game at Legion to progress to the League semifinal. The team went down the previous week and so were determined to get the required result. By half time they were 9 points ahead 5-5 to 2-5. The Legion hit back in the second half and went ahead with a late late goal. However the Tralee boys showed great maturity and from a good passing move they won a free. Despite a goal line full of Legion players Cian Purcell found a way through to see the thrilling game end 6-07 apiece. The draw sees the Stacks finish 3rd in the table and into the semis. The minors gave everything in a see saw battle with Dr Crokes, just going down in extra time. RADIO KERRY / RANDLES BROS KERRY SPORT STAR FOR APRIL: The Nominees for the Radio Kerry / Randles Bros Kerry Sport Star Awards are: Monika Dukarska who won her 4th Women’s University Senior Single Sculls title, Jack Kennedy from Dingle at 17 has been named as the Irish Champion Conditional Champion with over 45 wins this season and St Brendan’s College Hogan Cup winners are the nomination. MIRACLE PRAYERS PRAY TO ST. EXPEDITE

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: CARER’S SUPPORT GRANT Question What are the changes to the grant for respite care this year? How do I apply for the grant? Answer The name of the Respite Care Grant was changed in 2016 and it is now called the Carer’s Support Grant. The grant is an annual payment made to carers by the Department of Social Protection. Carers can use the grant in whatever way they wish. You can use the grant to pay for respite care if you wish, but you do not have to do so. In 2016 the grant will be €1,700 (increased from €1,300). You do not qualify if you are working more than 15 hours a week outside the home, if you are taking part in an education or training course for more than 15 hours a week, if you are getting a jobseeker’s payment or if you are signing on for jobseeker credits. You also do not qualify if you are living in a hospital, convalescent home or similar institution. If you are caring for more than one person, a grant is paid for each of them. In June of each year (usually on the first Thursday of the month), the Department of Social Protection pays the grant automatically to carers getting Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, Domiciliary Care Allowance or Prescribed Relative’s Allowance. If you are not getting one of these payments and you did not get the grant last year, you should fill in an application form. You can apply for this year’s grant from 7 April 2016 (8 weeks before the grant is payable). If you got the grant last year you do not need to reapply. You will get a letter at the end of April from the Carer’s Support Grant section in the Department of Social Protection with a short questionnaire. You must answer the questions on the back and return the letter to the Carer’s Support Grant section. A freepost envelope will be included with your letter. After you return the letter, the Department will use this and the information on file to reassess you for the Carer’s Support Grant. You can apply for a Carer’s Support Grant for any given year until 31 December of the following year. So, for example, you can apply for a grant for 2015 up until 31 December 2016.
