GOOD SUMMER HEALTH
Taking a Thiamine (B1) Supplement a couple of weeks prior to holiday may help to reduce the severity of the dreaded midget bits
The holiday is booked, you have started planning your summer wardrobe and want to look and feel your best. Don’t forget to give some thought to your holiday health kit, something we should all be thinking about in advance of jetting off. Thankfully most holidays go smoothly without any problems, but it is a good idea to be prepared and ensure you pack some essential remedies in case of any minor injuries or illnesses while you are away from home. We all love some sunshine, and it is good for our overall health, allows us to top up our Vitamin D levels and generally feel more energized. However, it is important to be sensible when exposing our skin to the sun. The best way to prevent premature ageing and skin damage which may lead to skin cancer is to stay out of the sun from midday to early afternoon, wear protective clothing , hats and most important of all, wear sunscreen. Conventional sun protection may contain potentially harmful synthetic chemicals including oxybenzone, which may be linked to hormone disruption and potential cell damage. The use of these synthetic ingredients mixed with mineral oils often cause skin irritation like prickly heat. Look in your local health store for sunscreens which are free of parabens and harmful chemicals, some of the better brands are GREEN PEOPLE, JASON OR ALOE PURA. Always pack a tube of Aloe Vera Gel, to help soothe skin after a day in the sun. The last thing you want while on holiday is an upset tummy, so top up your good gut bacteria prior to travelling and continue taking them while you are away, a good multi-strain probiotic such as BIO-KULT, UDO’S SUPER 8 or OPTIBAC. You should also consider taking PHYSILLIUM HUSK fibre with you to maintain regular bowel movements, as well as ZINC and VITAMIN C to ensure your immune system is fighting fit. HOMEOPATHIC REMEDIES ARE ESPECIALLY USEFUL FOR HOLIDAY FIRST AID KITS AND SHOULD ALWAYS INCLUDE:
ARNICA: bruises, sprains, strains and jet lag. ARSENCIUM: To ease diarrhea/vomiting as a result of food poisoning BELLADONNA: To help soothe sunburn and sunstroke. NUX VOMICA: useful for sickness or nausea caused by overindulgence. COCCULUS: Ideal for travel sickness. Until next time, stay healthy.

Clelia Murphy talks life after Fair City By Marisa Reidy FOR 22 years, renowned actor Clelia Murphy has been a household name on our TV screens, playing Fair City’s Niamh Cassidy. Most recently, she danced her way into the hearts of viewers as a favourite on RTE’s Dancing With The Stars. But as the bubbly Dubliner takes a break from the small screen to concentrate on other projects, she tells Connect that she is excited about life after Fair City and is looking forward to the challenges that brings. Clelia (43) laughs when she recalls wanting to be a pilot in her late teens, and remembers the sudden realisation that she had made a very big mistake in her subject choices when it came to CAO time.
“It came to fifth year and I had all my subjects picked and then it hit me one day - I bloody hate physics. I just thought what the hell am I doing,” she laughs. “I was lucky though that I had an amazing drama teacher, Margaret King, whose son I was dating at the time actually, and she was the one who encouraged me to go into acting.” Funnily enough, Clelia says she was remarkably shy as a teen and would never put herself forward for auditions at schools, but decided to take her teachers advice and go for it. Alas, her route to the acting world wasn’t as straight forward as she would have liked – having been turned down 4 | Connect Kerry | May 2019
twice for the a degree course in Drama and Theatre Studies in Trinity College, despite repeating her Leaving Cert to get in! “Trinity didn’t want me to do theatre studies but offered me a diploma course in acting, but I didn’t want to be an ‘actor’ per say – I wanted to go down the more creative route with the degree in theatre studies. They said no to the degree a second time and I just said to hell with this .” While repeating her Leaving Cert, Clelia wrote to the former director of the Gate Theatre, Michael Colgan asking for work experience, and while there a number of people suggested she would apply for a place at the Dublin Youth Theatre. Clelia was successful, and while there she says she learned ‘everything she needed to know’. It was also during a big production for the school that she was spotted by a talent scout and got the call for her now famous role as Niamh on Fair City. “I was supposed to play four scenes as Niamh – not even episodes, four scenes,” she recalls. “After that, I happened to be in RTE on another job and I remember a producer shouting at me from across the room saying: ‘You there, Murphy isn’t it? I need you back in September, but I’m not talking to you – get an agent’. This was August and I was 19 at the time and remember having to go in and get myself an agent like I knew what I was doing.” The rest, as they say is history, and Clelia enjoyed a staggering 22 years playing Niamh, featuring in some of the soap’s most explosive storylines. While impossible to pick a favourite, she did have a great laugh as she recalled Niamh’s illicit affair with her then teacher, Barry O’Hanlon! While she loved her time there and speaks with nothing but love and fondness for the cast and crew – including her best friend, but on screen foe Claudia Carroll (Nicola Prendergast). Clelia says that a few years ago she felt it was time to move on. “Don’t get me wrong, I will never, ever talk down Fair city – it was a very special place and allowed me to be the person I am, but I have no plans to go back. Never say never
of course, but there came a point when I thought ‘this is my only trip round the sun’ and I have to branch out. So if you ask me was it a difficult decision to leave, then the honest answer is no, because I knew it was right for me.” Skip forward to late 2018 when Clelia accepted her third invitation to appear on Dancing With the Stars – an experience she describes as terrifying and the greatest challenge of her career. It was her aforementioned best friend Claudia Caroll who convinced her to take the plunge, Clelia says.

“She just said, Clelia cop on and do it, and I love her for that. She’s always been that kind of friend – my motivator, my educator. She’s my rock,” Clelia said. Describing the preparation for the show as ‘full on’ since Christmas, seven days a week, Clelia said that while her fun personality may have come across in interviews and VTs, she took it very seriously. “I made the decision to have the craic and just be myself, but saying that, I really took it very seriously at the same time. It wasn’t just about the dancing, it was an entertainment show and I thought if I don’t take it seriously, I can’t entertain the audience and that’s the essence of what we do. That is why we need an entertainment industry.” She says it was an experience she will never forget and made several great friends during the show, in particular former rugby star Peter Stringer, who she says she hopes to work with in some capacity again in the future. Her participation in DWTS saw Clelia catapulted into the limelight far more than she would have been used to, and during one interview she talked about her battle with anorexia as a teen. Telling Connect that she in no way considers herself a spokesperson for the disease, the mum of one says it created an opportunity for people to talk about the issue and that can only be a good thing. “I never spoke about it before now because I suppose I was embarrassed. I look back and realise that I had a moment in my life when I wasn’t well, but I don’t want it to define me. I mean, if you get the flu it doesn’t define you, does it?” Clelia said. “I simply went on a diet and obviously didn’t intend on being so sick and certainly had no intention of putting my family through it all. Since I spoke about it, so many people have been messaging me and while I am in no way a spokesperson for the disease, I’m glad they’re talking to someone. What I would say is that there is absolutely no shame in this and I think when people start speaking honestly there’s a comfort in that.” Although Clelia has got used to the limelight, starring as one of Ireland’s most familiar soap stars for over 20 years, she says
6 | Connect Kerry | May 2019
she insists on keeping her private life private. Asked how she does it, she laughs and says: ‘I just don’t talk about anything personal, but to be honest I’m not that bloody interesting anyway,” she says. Her top priority, she says, is protecting her daughter Clarabelle, who she descries as the most important person in her life. Clelia raised Clarabelle as a single mum, and says their bond is amazing: “It’s me and Clarabelle against the world,” she says. “Being a parent is the hardest thing anyone can do and being a good parent is almost impossible. We are only human and kids don’t come with a manual, so it’s all about navigating and trusting yourself, because you don’t have all the answers. But listen, Clarabelle has taught me as much as I’ve taught her.” Describing her daughter as hugely creative, Clelia says Clarabelle is planning to return to college to study model making, adding that ‘she has more talent in her cuticle than I have in my entire body.” When talking to Connect, Clelia was mid-way through the Cork run of her latest stage performance of Maeve Binchy’s ‘Light A Penny Candle’ and said she is revelling in the live theatre experience. The buzz of the stage, as well as getting to work with an extremely talented young cast is something Clelia says makes her glad to be in the job she’s in. “These young actors are an inspiration and are not sitting around waiting for work, they’re getting out there and doing it. I am loving the stage and am very lucky to get a chance to do this as my job. People must realise that being an actor is very hard and you don’t do this to get famous..you do this to be the best you can be, and the more I do this the better I become,” Clelia said. Asked if there was anything new and exciting in the pipeline, Clelia - who has an MA in screen writing from IADT - said she would love to write more. In the meantime, however, she is set to star in a new Gavin Kostick stage production this summer, which she says will feature a dance piece and performance piece, culminating in a play! There are also a number of projects in the planning stages which she can’t speak about just yet, but says she is excited for what the future holds as she embraces life post Fair City. “Don’t feel the fear, find the joy,” she said.

Hello Summer ...
Catherine’s Fashion Fix .... By Catherine Keane The summer countdown has officially begun and that means it’s time for a new swimsuit or bikini or a few. Whether you're jetting off on a spring break or simply counting down the days until summer, swimwear season is officially upon us. A classic one-piece or bikini never goes out of style, but summer 2019 is bringing forth a fresh batch of trends to try. Instead of waiting until summer to dive into the freshly released swimwear trends, now is the time to start planning. Like everything else in fashion, every year you find designers releasing new bikinis and one pieces, likely around a certain theme. For spring/summer 2019, animal print reigns supreme, from your leopard spots to tiger stripes. However, there are a few other trends you're sure to see lining the lounge chairs this summer too. Cutouts, metallics, ruffles, high-waisted and bows have come to the forefront for the season ahead to name but a few. While animal prints are generally associated with that "look-at-me" vibe, anyone can rock them. From your classic River Island cut out leopard to variations animal print on zebra and tiger stripes and even python you'll find these designs splashed onto one-pieces and bikinis in a variety of colours from neon pinks to a more subdue whiteand-black combination. However this year snakeskin is having a moment. For 2019, almost every swimwear brand has released its own version of a "sexy cutout" suit, whether it's a bikini that resembles bandage wraps or a one-
piece that has a whole side missing. However, there is an unexpected style twist this year with more romantic and feminine pieces. Shine extra bright in swimwear that pack a shimmery punch but, metallics are definitely not a trend for the faint hearted. The latest pieces for the season of sparkly, shiny suits are surprisingly subtle. Instead of full-on sequins, try a version with lurex for a low-key glittery effect, or something with a shimmery sheen fabric in a simple silhouette in classic gold and silver. This shiny material might get blindly bright when the sunlight hits it, so have your sunglasses ready!
H & M Metallic
Debenhams Frill
With ruffle necklines and puffy sleeves so popular for spring and summer, it’s no surprise that swimwear is also adopting this trend. River Island Bow Some off-the-shoulder pieces feature one giant ruffle that covers the entire top, while other pieces will feature smaller fabric ripples along waistlines and straps. Return of the '80s and '90s has been making an appearance on the runways for the past few seasons. So it’s no surprise then that retailers are hopping on that highwaisted bikini Debenhams high waisted

bandwagon. The high-waisted might be a retro look, but the latest fresh prints and designs keep it feeling contemporary. If you're looking for a bikini that will flatter your body and make you feel confident then high-waisted is for you. The cut smooths out your torso and highlights the smallest point of your waist, so it's a great option for all body types. So start the hunt now for the perfect swimwear that will leave you feeling gorgeous all summer long!

Hi Lovely Readers, By now every possible use of chocolate must surely have been thought up, I have to admit I got lots of Eggs but I was very good I shared them all with the “ Smallies”! I know (sorry moms when your kids go back home hyper it’s my fault ). Communion season has started and my beautiful niece Amelie is celebrating on Saturday 4th May, lets hope the sun will shine for all communions this month. Paul is just back from a trip and he certainly out did himself with his choice. I know from dealing with ladies that have an event coming up they say finding outfit is relatively easy, and to be honest most of us know what suits our shape and size but they tend to have a problem accessorizing and wondering what colour will put the finishing touches to dress/suit/jumpsuit. There is no hard and fast rule but less is more. I wouldn’t recommend any one wearing a very patterened shawl with an outfit that has a lot going on in it, i.e if you have a stripped dress steer away from patterned shawls, and if outfit is plain avoid same coloured wrap but a contrasting shawl will give it the lift it needs. I hope this makes sense but I know I am like a broken record please please please call in with your outfit and Mary and I will only be delighted to give ye suggestions and make it as easy as possible. Before I sign off just a quick word of thanks to all my lovely customers who were so concerned for my wellbeing I was off sick for 3 weeks in total since January and to be honest I don’t think I have been off for that long in total since we opened 8 years ago. Mary and Paul did an incredible job keeping the show on the road so I am so grateful to ye all. Hopefull I have used up my “sick days” for the next 8 years, I am back to as near normal as possible whatever normal is and hope to see ye all in the next few weeks to get ye event ready. Please be kind to everyone ye meet, no one knows what is going on in anybodys life in any given day. Until next month, Keep smiling
Carmel xx

Exercise and Wellness Hi all, Áine of AfitBody Gym here again to tackle all your questions in regards to exercise and wellness.
LIFESTYLE CHANGES
“The Difference between wanting & achieving is Discipline” In any health & Fitness programme consistency and discipline is key to achieving results. This doesn’t mean that eating the right food & exercising needs to become another chore on our already packed daily task lists, but that by making small lifestyle changes daily we can achieve staggering long term results. Most people fail because they don’t take a realistic look at their schedules and don’t schedule their workouts, choosing a more fly by the seat of their pants approach.. “what days will I do this week”.. So firstly look at your week, Pick 2-3 days and times that you can carve out for you time, and choose an activity to do in that time. Plan your week and your month. Let people know that this is your time to exercise. If those around you know the times you are unavailable they are less likely to call on you for other chores/tasks making you miss out on training times. We need to make good food choices and exercising a way of life, something that just simply comes naturally to us. Daily tweaks to out diet, reducing sugars and processed foods, introducing new fruits and vegetables as well as new grain sources. Along with food we have a huge variety in exercise styles available to us. By finding the type of exercise you enjoy it can become a huge break from the strains of daily life and a excellent source of stress relief. As the saying goes.. “YOUR ONLY ONE WORKOUT AWAY FROM A GOOD MOOD” So this Month’s Homework is to try a new form exercise you have not done before , whether that is Zumba, Spin, Yoga, Barre, kayaking or booking a Personal Training session because you never lifted a Kettlebell before. Take yourself out of your comfort zone. You never know you might actually like it!

Although the weather outside was rather gloomy we had no desire to stay cooped up indoors on a weekend. Looking to spend time somewhere less familiar, we decided to head out to Castleisland for the day. As we journeyed by car over the old mountain road, we were eager to enjoy the day despite the cloudy skies. We arrived in Castleisland in the late afternoon and with the car parked up, we immediately went in search of our first caffeine fix of the day. On a friend’s recommendation, we headed for Nana Bea’s Café, located on the Killarney Road. In contrast to the conditions outside, Nana Bea’s was bright and colourful inside, the large space decorated with bright paintings, chairs and tablecloths. Doubling as a boutique gift shop, customers have the opportunity to purchase a variety of cards, glassware and decorations as well as order the drinks and nourishment of their choice. Having had our breakfast only an hour or so previously, my friend and I ordered a simple scone each to accompany our drinks, all of which a friendly staff member soon brought to our table. I enjoyed a latte served in a tall glass while my friend happily sipped on his freshly poured tea as we both gobbled up our delicious scones spread with butter and jam. Our short stay in Nana Bea’s was the perfect beginning to our day out and about in Castleisland. After finishing our brunch, we took the five-minute drive out to one of Castleisland’s main attractions, Crag Caves. We took a guided tour of the caves and although we had both been before, we received some well needed refresher lessons in geology. Getting our heads around the differences between stalagmites and stalactites was a tiresome affair for both mind and body, and we headed back into town, eager to retire somewhere for spot of lunch. After a brief recon on foot, The Country Market Restaurant looked to be the perfect place to have a splendid meal. Located at 47 Main Street, the Country Market Restaurant had an old-time, family-friendly feel, busy with lunch-goers of all ages enjoying their meals. After being greeted by a welcoming staff member we sat in a quiet corner of the premises and set about inspecting our menus. A range of mouth-watering options were available on the menu but upon hearing of the soups of the day, Vegetable or Tomato & Basil, we quickly made up our minds. We were served by an extremely helpful staff member throughout our meal who brought our soups to the table in a timely fashion and ensured everything was to our liking. Accompanied with a generously served basket of mixed bread, and a side of parmesan cheese, our soups arrived hot and aromatic. My tomato & basil soup was simply delicious, tasty with just a hint of spice, 26 | Connect Kerry | May 2019
while my friend gave an equally rave-review to his vegetable broth. Our excellent experience at The Country Market Restaurant made for a truly wholesome lunch. Upon concluding our lunch, we noted that the weather had cleared up considerably and the dreary afternoon drizzle had been replaced by a gentle dry breeze. We saw this a sign that we should take in some of the surrounding natural beauty and headed for Castleisland River Walk. The walk offered a peaceful escape into nature and we encountered only a handful of like-minded trail-walkers along the way. We admired Castleisland’s beautiful flora and fauna as we followed the walk along the River Maine, the highlight of which was the ruin of Desmond Castle, appealing to the inner-historian in both of us. The end of the walk took us back into town where we were more than ready to find somewhere to dine for the evening. We wandered back on to Main Street, and as we made our way down town we came across Con’s Bar & Grill. An extension of the River Island Hotel on Lower Main Street, the premise’ warmth and atmospheric lighting made for a comfortable setting in which to feast. A welcoming hostess promptly brought menus to our table and after ordering, we relaxed into our seats in anticipation of our final meal of the day. A unique aspect of the bar was the open grill behind the bar where we could watch our meals being prepared. Our dishes arrived shortly and we tucked in immediately. I chose the Angus Steak Sandwich, served in a panini with fries and salad on the side, while my companion selected the Chicken Caesar Salad. Our meals were delightful. My steak, cooked rare, was juicy and full of flavour between crunchy slices of the panini bread while my friend described his dish as perfectly light and refreshing, which he washed down with a crisp glass of Chardonnay. Our dishes were served generously, and our appetites were completely satisfied, we treated ourselves to two americanos before we went on our way. Our dinner at Con’s Bar & Grill capped off a wonderful day in Castleisland. As we headed for home, we reflected on a brilliant day out, vowing to return after our fantastic Taste of Castleisland.

Scorching Summer Bedding Colours NOW AVAILABLE FROM YOUR LOCAL GARDEN CENTRE
First things first: your growing medium. If you're replacing bedding in pots, I'd recommend replacing at least half of the compost, if not all, with fresh multipurpose compost. Old compost is tired and lacks nutrients but is perfect for throwing on beds and borders as a mulch so won't go to waste. I like to use Bord Na Mona multi-purpose compost with added John Innes. It is great for all your flowers, has slow release fertiliser and it is Irish! Next, choosing your plants. There is an incredible amount of summer bedding plants now available in the market through Irish grown nurseries and the Dutch market. This year at Ballyseedy we have one of the biggest ranges we have carried in years and I must say it’s wonderful to have so many colours and scents around the centre again. I just love this time of year! Hot petunias, fresh & vibrant Geraniums, lobelia, bacopa, bidens, begonias and marigolds are all the old reliables that will offer good, strong shows of colour and work well in our mixed summer climates. This year why not be somewhat adventurous and try some delightful Oesteosperumums, gazanias and even some foliage plants such as grasses or ivy. These will add great structure to your pots, boxes and baskets. I’m recommending this year to use 3 to 4 strong colours and stick to that as a maximum. Some of the best shows I’ve seen from baskets and window boxes are in fact 1 hot colour such as all

red, purple or yellow which can give a magnificent show. A basket full of purple petunias is a delight to see, or red trailing geraniums can give a wonderful show for the summer. Finally, the maintenance, watering is essential throughout the summer on almost a daily basis. It does not matter if it is raining! it is so important to keep the plants well hydrated as this will stop them getting dried out and looking tired and lifeless. Deadheading flowers is great to encourage new growth and thereafter feeding with a liquid feed works wonders to prolong summer colours. Again, I like to use a local product called Brandon Seaweed which we sell here at Ballyseedy. Happy planting and do pop by if you need any help! Until next month

TAXATION ON AIRBNB INCOME BY: John Canty In recent years Airbnb has become hugely popular in Ireland. It offers an easy source of income from properties around the country for all property owners. There are some important issues to be aware of, when letting you property using Airbnb. IS INCOME TAXABLE Yes, income is taxable. Under normal circumstances Airbnb is considered a trade, being a short term letting of property. Therefore as you have trading income you must complete a tax return each year. WHAT EXPENSES ARE DEDUCTIBLE Direct expenses such as commissions, food, cleaning and advertising are fully tax deductible. Other property expenses such as insurance, repairs, or similar expenses should be apportioned based on level of trading.
NB: CAPITAL GAIN TAX Normally, a private house is fully exempt from Capital Gains Tax. However, as Airbnb is considered a trade, it means that Capital Gains would apply to the future sale of the property. The most likely scenario is that a portion of the sale would be liable to Capital Gains Tax.

Music in the Kingdom LISA MEETS OWEN RUA
Owen Rua is a local musical force to be reckoned with at the moment. I caught up with him to find out what drives him in his field. Hi Owen! It’s always a pleasure to speak with you. For those that don’t know about you tell us all! Hi Lisa! Thanks for chatting to me! I’m a singer/ songwriter from Tralee, Co. Kerry. I perform regularly in different hotels, venues and pubs around Kerry and Cork. How did you start off in music? I grew up in a very musical household and my mom would always play music on her old vinyl player form the 70s all day around our house. Through this, I got exposed to a lot of different styles of music. Also my two older brothers are both guitar
players so there was always guitars and other instruments lying around my house. When I was about 12 I taught myself the Ukulele from Youtube and eventually I started to sing along while playing it. At that age I didn’t take it seriously at all. That developed to me taking guitar lessons and I eventually improved my singing as a product of learning these instruments and starting to sing along with them. When I was about 16 in my final year of secondary school in The Green, my passion for music grew and I started signing up for every musical activity in the school and performing at every opportunity that I could. I loved it so much that I decided to study music as a subject for the leaving cert. For a long time I had no idea what I wanted to do after school but when I heard there was a new Bachelor Of Arts Hons Degree in Popular Music for Vocalists in the Cork School Of Music I became really excited with the idea. It was a very new course when I auditioned for it but I always knew I wasn’t interested in performing classical music so this degree was just what I was looking for. I ended up studying there for 4 years and graduated in October 2017. Do you remember was there a specific moment where you knew you wanted to pursue this as a career? I think I always knew I was a creative person 36 | Connect Kerry | May 2019

but I realised as a teenager that music was what fitted me more than anything else. I love being able to express myself when I sing whether it’s at a concert or writing my own music. Songwriting became an outlet to express whatever challenges I was going through in my own life as a teenager also. You went on to study in the wonderful cork school of music, how important was that musically and career wise for you? It gave me some great opportunities and I came out of it with a lot more knowledge and as a more developed musician. I got to meet a wide network of talented musicians and creative people. I was given the opportunity to perform in brilliant venues such as the Pavilion, The Cork Opera House, City hall etc. Studying a music degree isn’t for everyone, it’s a lot of work and it isn’t always necessary for every musician depending on what route they want to take with their music but i couldn’t have imagined doing anything else after school for myself. Being back in Kerry how have you found the music scene back home? There’s a lot of talented musicians in Kerry and I love collaborating with several of the artists here. I think we take it for granted that music is such a part of our culture. I love that in Kerry we have music in almost every pub and buskers out every weekend. You don’t find music very easily in most other countries. I especially felt this when I lived in Barcelona last year. There was very few buskers and the only place I heard live music other than at concerts venues was at Irish pubs.
Who are your biggest influences past and present to your own personal style in writing? I listen to so many different genres of music that finding my own style is still a struggle. I love Pop more than anything so I listen to a lot of what’s popular at the moment such as Billie Eilish, Lewis Capaldi, Hozier and so many more. But I also love Jazz and I grew up listening to Frank Sinatra, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald. Some of my favourite singers would be Mariah Carey,
Bruno Mars, Barbra Streisand and Sam Smith. My brothers were really into Heavy metal growing up so that also had an influence on me. I mostly like to write songs that suit my voice and that express a message that means something to me. What has been the highlight so far in your solo career? A few months ago I was the opening act for Declan O’Rourke in Beners Hotel Tralee and also performing several times at the Cork Jazz festival have been some of the biggest highlights so far but hopefully the best is yet to come haha Where can people hear your music and see you live? I post my music on my Facebook, Youtube, Instagram and Soundcloud pages: Owen Rua Music. I also post where I will be performing usually either on Instagram or Facebook every week. I often perform at weddings, Christenings and private events also. Any advice to those starting off in their music journey? Music is a wonderful thing to do even if it isn’t what you end up pursuing, you will always have it as a hobby and a way of connecting with people. Most of my friends have been made through music. Having a music career is a difficult journey and you have to be persistent and never give up on yourself until you get somewhere. I’m still in the beginning of my music career but if anyone wants to query me about their musical journey I’d be happy to help so feel free to message me on Facebook or Instagram! @OwenRuaMusic I think everyone is different but you have to do music because you love it and because you’e passionate about it more than anything. Music isn’t an easy career so you’re passion is what will drive you to continue through whatever challenges you face in this career. KERRY COLLEGE OF FURTHER EDUCATION (KCFE) DENNY STREET CAMPUS
OFFICIALLY OPENED!
Kerry ETB’s Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) Denny Street Campus was officially opened on Thursday May 2nd by the Minister for Education and Skills, Joe McHugh TD, with hundreds of guests, staff and students in attendance The official opening is very significant as it firmly embeds Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) in Tralee Town Centre. From the College’s perspective, the introduction of a second campus was necessary as student numbers were substantially increasing, year on year and the Clash Campus could not facilitate the student numbers. This new location means Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) is in a position to offer as many students as possible the opportunity to remain in Kerry to study a programme of their choice.
The Campus encompasses 5, 6, 7 and 8 Denny Street and the refurbishment of the existing buildings and introduction of volumes of students has helped to reenergise and rejuvenate the town centre. The Campus has 11 lecture rooms; 2 high spec computer rooms; 4 dedicated medical stations; offices; a canteen and more. Tremendous effort went in to maintaining the authenticity of the buildings built in Georgian times and the wonderful workmanship remains evident throughout all of the rooms. The new building is currently dedicated to the Health and Social Sciences

Departments and will facilitate the delivery of the Nursing Studies, Nursing with Maternity Care Skills, Carers, Youth Work, Applied Social Studies with Psychology, Emergency Care Services, Medicine Counter Pharmacy Assistant, Surgical Operative Care Assistant, Advanced Social Care with Counselling Studies and Health Services Supervisory Management. The focus on the Health and Social Sciences programmes is particularly relevant as the additional new premises have purpose built dedicated medical stations and facilitates the introduction of additional new courses from this September on. Through continued developments and engagement with the Health and Social Care Providers in the county, Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) continues to establish itself as a major provider of highly skilled work ready graduates for both the workplace and for progression to third level education. The town centre was an obvious choice as it not only enhances the atmosphere
positively but also the local businesses can feel the benefit. Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) has received huge support from all of the Tralee business community and they have helped in every way possible according to Principal Mary Lucey. The ideal positioning of the Denny Street Campus facilitates Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) collaborating easily with other businesses and organisations in the provision of work placements, guest lectures and workshops etc. It also places the College in an ideal position to offer up-skilling and courses for employers and employees. If you have any further queries please do not hesitate in contacting Mary Lucey at MaryLucey@Kerryfe.ie.
