ORAL HEALTH... NATURALLY! Taking good care of your mouth, teeth and gums is a vital step towards good overall health. Good oral hygiene includes visiting your dentist for regular check-ups and the hygienist every 6 months for cleaning. Ensure you are taking the time to brush and floss properly. There are also some other steps which you need to consider to maintain good oral health such as looking at your dietary habits. Replace sugar with a natural alternative such as XYLITOL. This is a natural sweetener extracted from the bark of birch trees and it may help reduce the ability of bacteria to multiply in the mouth and keep your teeth and gums healthy. Chewing helps to stimulate saliva build-up which also helps to fight tooth damage. Go for whole fruit rather than juice and chew on crunchy vegetables. Stress can of course have a negative effect on your immune system and as a result may, in some people, cause a breakout of mouth ulcers. Burning the candle at both ends may also affect your gums and oral health. If you experience reoccurring mouth ulcers, bad breath, sore gums or oral thrush it may be a sign that you are run down or simply not absorbing enough of the vital nutrients needed for good overall health. As well as maintaining good oral hygiene practices there are also some natural products and essential nutrients available in store, some of which include: B-VITAMINS: If stress is a factor, these will help support the central nervous system. VITAMIN C: may help to kill of bad bacteria in the mouth. VITAMIN D: helps you to absorb vitamin C and keep teeth strong. CALCIUM: essential mineral to help keep teeth strong and healthy. PROBIOTICS: UDO’S super 5 is a lozenge probiotic which will help build the good bacteria needed for a healthy mouth. CO Q 10: research has shown it may help with bleeding and inflamed gums (always discuss these symptoms with your dentist).. Remember your oral health and your general health and wellbeing have an effect on each other so it is important to keep your immune system strong and stress levels under control. If you need help and support with this some products which may help include: GARLIC CAPSULES, BLACK ELDERBERY, DR WOLZ IMMUNEKOMPLEX AND ECHINACEA. Don’t forget to top up your gut bacteria regularly with a good quality probiotic. Some probiotics contain different strains of bacteria so always ask us in-store and we will ensure you are getting the most effective one for your needs. You will also find a large selection of natural, paraben free toothpastes in store. With or without fluoride, sensitive or whitening, so check these out also. Until next time, stay healthy.

KARL HENRY
No-Nonsense Health and Fitness Expert By Marisa Reidy HE’S probably best known as the nononsense health and fitness expert on RTE’s hugely successful show, Operation Transformation, but personal trainer Karl Henry has worked extremely hard to get to where he is today. Chatting to Connect as the new series kicks off for its 12th season, Karl assures us that it’s never too late to take control of your health. While he admits that achieving a healthier lifestyle is not easy and takes determination and plenty of hard work, it is very much achievable no matter what age (or size) you are! Now very much a household name and go-to man for health and fitness expertise, Karl’s journey to success began with his dad’s business, where, despite being one of the family, he didn’t necessarily get an easy ride! “My dad had a gym, and still has, and when I wasn’t in school I was there - mostly, scrubbing toilets, cleaning machines, washing mirrors and learning the foundations for what would become my career, getting pushed out of my comfort zones into doing classes and working with people,” he told Connect. “I suppose I loved the environment. I would describe myself as a people person,
I love being around people and my job gives me that in spades.” While he considered himself an active teen, playing rugby, exercising regularly and eating well, he too – like so many of us – has always had to watch his weight. That, he believes, is what helps him work so well to get the best from his clients. “Though I was always heavy set, I still am, and have to watch what I eat and how much I exercise to keep my weight in check. I think that’s one of the reasons I can relate to my clients. I know where they are coming from,” he said. While he is probably best known for his TV work, Karl owns his own personal training company, Karl Henry Health, doing 35-40 sessions a week with clients. He also writes for the Irish Independent and records a weekly podcast called the RealHealthPodcast. And if that wasn’t enough, Karl also does a lot of corporate work around Ireland and Europe, working with companies on their employee wellness programs. “I did my personal training diploma before I went to college to study my BSC degree in UCD, then I started training people in their homes, driving from client to client. This built up to a fully fledged business by the end of the first year of college and I did both from there,” Karl explained. “As it built, I did a business plan, giving myself five years of work being my priority to see if I could create a brand for what I saw as a gap in the market.” So how did he make the break to TV, and subsequently becoming one of the nation’s best known and well-regarded personal trainers. “I suppose I got lucky in a way, but I also believe that working hard and prioritising work for many years created that,” he admits. “I got a lucky break being asked to go on a radio show with Gerry Ryan called Operation Transformation. This went so

well that it was turned into a TV show. I went for the audition and managed to get onto the panel. That was 12 years ago and I have very much grown up with the show, starting when I was 25.” His passion for Operation Transformation is clear to see, so what is it about the show that draws him back year after year?

“It’s addictive,” he says. “Having such a large platform to tell people about health is incredible. The community response to the program is amazing and the leaders’ doing so well is an addictive process to be involved in.” As for the critics who don’t agree with the Operation Transformation format? He’s genuinely not bothered. “You can’t please everyone. Of course there will be cynics, but just look at the numbers from what we have achieved each year in terms of viewers, participants, applicants and nationwide health initiatives. They speak for themselves.” So, as a new year dawns and people are once again deciding that this is ‘their year’ to get healthy, we asked Karl for his best advice to help people stick to it, given that so many give up within a few months. His answer…be realistic and make it fun. You’re aiming for a lifestyle change and not a quick fix! “What I would say is to set realistic goals, find exercise that is fun, eat sensibly and apply a balanced approach so that you are aiming for long term, life-long health and not the usual quick fix. Remember that real health takes time, it takes hard work and it’s not easy,” he said. “People want easy and fast ways to lose weight and they fall for the same trick every single time, that being the fact that it’s packaged to be easy, but it’s not. So save your hard earned money and do it properly this year.” Part of doing it ‘properly,’ he explained, is making sure you devise a plan that you enjoy and makes you happy – and most importantly one you will stick to. “Extreme exercise is in fashion at the moment, and that’s fine for some people, but not all. Healthy is finding what works for you, for life, that’s enjoyable, fun and challenging too,” he said. Diet is key too, Karl says, affirming the old adage that you simply can’t out exercise a bad diet. “Food is at least 60 per cent of the results a person will achieve, so you need to eat healthy, cook more, drink more water and exercise too. You can’t out-train a bad diet so it’s definitely a combination of both.” Karl also believes that parents have a huge part to play in promoting a healthy lifestyle in their children and need to take responsibility now. “The stats are there for all to see. Children and teens are simply not getting enough exercise, so I think parents need to lead by example,” he said. “Don’t preach, but show your families the way. We are expanding, becoming more unhealthy than ever before, with a bigger gap between the healthy and unhealthy, so we also need policies but 6 | Connect Kerry | February 2019
more importantly better ways to tell people about these policies too.” When asked how he would react to someone feeling that it was too late to change their lifestyle, or that too much damage had been done through years of neglect, Karl was having none of it. “It’s never too late. You’re never too old and you’re never too unfit. Just start small and go from there,” he said. And he should know, having seen some wonderful transformations over the years – not only on TV, but in his day to day working life. “Seeing people change their life for the better is the reason I work as hard as I do,” he said. “I am undeniably addicted to my job. I love it, really love it. I don’t see it as work to be honest and that feeling of watching someone change their lives with my help is just epic” Karl is also keen to share his expertise with the wider public through his podcast and on social media, offering invaluable tips and advice to his thousands of followers. He has also written numerous books, including the recent, number one best-selling ‘Karl Henry’s Healthy Living Handbook – an encouraging, practical guide to a sustainable plan that will help you achieve lasting changes in your well being. “Sharing my knowledge and expertise is something I always wanted to do,” he explained. “I love writing and the platforms it provides to get people healthy. The podcast is another version for this, another platform to improve someone’s health.”

NEW YEAR , NEW YOU,
NEW CONTRIBUTORS TO CONNECT Welcome to the first spring edition of Connect. With the new season arriving, I wonder how many of us are still persevering with our New Year’s resolutions. In the hope that you are, we have some fantastic advice from health and fitness experts to help you along. Anyone planning on tying the knot this year will also find great advice on how to make your special day truly memorable; two new contributors join us this year Dr Deirdre Fanning Consultant Urologist at the Bons Secours Hospital Tralee and Aine Fitzgerald personal trainer and owner of Killorglin Based Fitness Business - A fit Body. We asked them to tell us their top tip for staying fit and healthy for 2019 and also a little memory from their own respective wedding days, first up Dr Deirdre. Dr. Fanning: Personally I like to adopt the attitude of slowly and surely when it comes to diet and exercise. Sudden enthusiastic Dr Deirdre Fanning splurges of activity tend to fade into feelings of failure, with the potential of finding comfort on your cosy couch with tasty snacks in place of low-calorie fat-free sugarfree vegan bites. Setting realistic goals and enlisting the help of family and friends is important as they can offer an empathetic support network. My Wedding - Having celebrated my fifth wedding Anniversary last September, I can still clearly remember my wedding ceremony and reception in the Mustard Seed, Ballingarry. My husband and I decided to break tradition and spent the night before our wedding together in our home, both bridal and groom parties got ready together and we took nearly all our professional photos before the ceremony. These decisions, unpopular with some traditionalists at the time, ended up really enhancing the day. So my advice to brides would be to please yourself and go with your instincts. While Aine tells us ...... On Health and Fitness .... I think it is important to think in terms of fueling & training your Body not diet and exercise, think about it positively. Take a base line of where you are at and train & fuel to get to where you want to be, everybody’s journey and desired Aine Fitzgerald destination is different, so be realistic and patient with yourself, allow the time for changes to happen. Most importantly track your progress so on days you feel bad you can look back at where you started and feel encouraged by even the smallest of progress My Wedding .... My partner and I split our day having a small intimate church wedding and a small lunch with close Family & Friends, that evening we had a big party with extended family & friends and we literally had a ball! There is no wrong or right way to celebrate. So just celebrate it your way and have fun! Weddings are so personal so make it personal to you, don’t feel forced into traditions you don’t care for and also don’t feel conscious of including any you love. Soak up the time with friends and family and each other, it goes so quickly, small things like favor’s , decorations, flowers etc. don’t really matter once the day is underway, so whatever happens roll with it, smile, laugh and capture every moment. Throughout the year both ladies will be bringing you some health information which hopefully will help to keep us all healthy and happy. Enjoy,

MINDING YOUR MIND in the year ahead - FINDING THAT HOUR IN THE DAY Everyone has had days where we wished there were more than 24 hours and we have also had days when we look at the clock and calculate how many more hours until bed time! With 24 hours a day you need to make one of those hours for you. Try having a lunch break on your own – this may seem strange at first but it will end up being one of the hours you look forward to most. Buy a book or magazine and head to your local café. Grab a quiet corner, order something nice and while away the hour in your own company...no kids, no work colleagues, no phone. Enjoy it. Go for a walk on the beach, burn essential oils and relax on the couch for an hour, have a long bath when everyone else is in bed, put on your favourite CD and sing along to it. Whatever floats your boat, do it for an hour a day because you owe it to you. - IT’S OK TO SAY NOIf you agree to every demand on you whether it’s overtime at work, another night out with friends, coffee with a colleague, walking the neighbour’s dog or babysitting for a family member as well as looking after your family, your relationship and your job, then something has to give – and it is usually your health. Learning to say NO can be difficult at the start but you need to start. Be honest and let people know that you need some ‘me’ time. It’s not being selfish; it is called SELF CARE. When you put yourself last you are giving everyone else permission to put you at the bottom of the pecking order too! You will feel much better meeting up for that coffee when you are rested and can be fully present. - BE YOUR BEST SELF Get enough sleep, have that long shower, eat your breakfast and put on clothes that you feel good in. Show up being the best version of yourself. All of the above will help you have a positive mindset and you will be able to face whatever the day throws at you. Whether you are self-employed, unemployed, a full-time caregiver or working for someone else having time in the day to look after your mental health is every bit as important as your physical health. If you have a physical illness you go to your doctor but if you have a mental illness, like anxiety, then why suffer in silence? Make this the year that you take care of ALL of you. Reach out, ask for support and find your happier self. On a final note...have a mantra to get you through the tough days Today I will not stress over things I cannot control One day at the time I have already decided that today is going to be ridiculously amazing PS. Before the month is over buy yourself some flowers!

Your Healthy Year
Happy New year to all Connect readers, I’m Áine of AfitBody Gym and will be here to tackle all your questions in regards to exercise and wellness. I am delighted to join the connect team to bring you advice and tips for health and wellbeing.
January can be such a time of doom and gloom, placing restrictions and limitations on us. How about we change our mindset, look at February as a time of renewal and change, a type of caterpillar to butterfly scenario. Think not in terms of what you can’t have but what you can, and what we can all have with a bit of consistency and structure is TONED ARMS! Who is with me? Who want’s it?
Workout of the Month So here it is from me to you PROJECT: BANISH THE BINGO 4 Minutes 4 Times a week, As Many Rounds as Possible - Kickstart your Fitness with this little arm workout or add this after your walk or run. - Remember consistency is key - If you want it work for it - 8 Press Ups - 8 Triceps Dips - 8 High Plank to Low Plank - 8 Burpees - Plank 30 Secs
Hungry this JANUARY??!! NOT ME! We all feel that little bit wobbly after the festive season, overindulgence, late nights, too many treats all adds up to make us feel a little bloated and well crappy. We don’t need to be hungry to see changes. STARVATION IS NOT THE ANSWER. Cleaning up the diet a little, making little tweaks, introducing clean nutritious food into our diets is. Again don’t think about all the foods you can’t have think about all the foods we can discover. Adding Protein to the diet will help you feel 10 | Connect Kerry | February 2019
fuller for longer, helping to avoid the temptation to snack. Plant based proteins are packed with flavour not to mention vitamins and minerals and are easy to bulk up our lunch and dinner. Check these out you might already be using a few! ** Plant based Protein Poster
Who said you can’t have treats??!! That’s it for this month we are easing you in gradually!
If you have any questions for Aine email us info@connectpublications.ie and we will have her include the answers in the next issue.

Weddings Can Be Stressful
Getting married can be a stressful business. We’re all familiar with the “bridezilla” – the bride who is so tense and anxious that her wedding should be perfect that she becomes a different person, bossy, demanding and ready to fly off the handle at a moment’s notice. It’s understandable; if you think that you have only one chance to achieve perfection, you will naturally be keyed up about it. But it’s important to remember that your wedding is just one step in a process of building a relationship. It’s not magic, it’s not perfect, it’s not the happy-ever-after ending of the fairy tales. It’s much more a beginning. A wedding is a public expression of a private commitment. You and your spouse make that commitment to each other, and to make it more meaningful, you do that before your friends and families, and undertake a civil contract as well. This commitment and contract should last the rest of your lives, and strengthen your partnership. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter what the dress is like, how many attend the wedding, if the flowers are perfect or that everybody enjoys the meal. If you end the day married to the one you love, ready and excited to face the rest of your lives together, then the wedding is a success. Keep this in mind. Don’t let others pressure you into doing something you don’t want to, because you can’t please everybody. Don’t aim for perfection, because something will surely go wrong. Aim to have fun and get married, and you won’t be disappointed.

PEARLY WHITES AN DR MARCAS MAC DOMHNAILL
NITROUS OXIDE SEDATION There are two main forms of sedation available in general dental practice in Ireland. The first is intravenous sedation where a sedative drug is given through a vein in the arm or hand. The second type of sedation is nitrous oxide sedation. Other sedative techniques such as oral or nasal are often used in a hospital setting. Nitrous Oxide Sedation, also known as laughing gas, is a pain relieving and sedative gas that is combined with oxygen to make patients more comfortable during dental care. A light tingling feeling is often experienced by patients as well as an altered sense of time. Patients often listen to relaxing music during nitrous oxide sedation. Some patients love the feeling and feel very comfortable. This gas is delivered through a small hood that rests on your nose. The dentist will first try the small hood on your nose and introduce the nitrous oxide gas to you, explaining how it will make you feel. Sometimes, it is better to have an introduction to nitrous oxide without dental treatment. In certain medical conditions it can make dental treatment safer. It also helps to control gagging problems also. After inhalation sedation you should make a full recovery within 30 minutes. It is very helpful for both adults and children who are nervous about dental treatment. Beir Bua. Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill. Move more ... lose more ...
starting out with simple steps... Advances in technology and labour saving devices have now given us inactivity as a lifestyle choice these days and unfortunately for some of us we are seeing our waistlines expanding because of it....this is one consequence of not moving more!! Who doesn’t dream of a duvet day? Lounging around all day in your pjs, binge watching our favourite shows or netflix series....I know I do anyway!! Having a rest day is a good thing absolutely but when it becomes a routine and its affecting your health and well being then it’s is time to consider some small changes we can make to incorporate activity into our lifestyles. Building activity into your life can be simple and doesn’t have to be a daunting process. Simple wins are: taking the stairs instead of the escalator (free exercise machine!) parking your car at the end of the car park. Taking the dog for a walk, cycle to work, taking up a zumba or fitness class. Sitting for long periods of time can be a risk to your health. Being sedentary can affect your metabolism which can lead to weigh gain No need to despair because essentially you can act straight away to reverse this again with simple wins. Breaking up long periods of sitting by stretching and standing. Set a reminder of your phone to help. Walk around the room when talking on the phone. Search out that colleague on the other side of the building and talk to them in person instead of sending an email, remember that old wii fit that works perfectly finelanguishing in the back of a tv cabinet destined to become a museum piece .... how about relocating it to a place of prominence maybe in your lounge again and get it going. How about getting out of bed earlier and doing a workout at home or at a class if you need company and accountability? At home unstacking the dishwasher, or folding the laundry during the ad breaks? When was the last time you came off of your ipad/tablet and played with your kids? If Sitting for long periods of time can be a risk to your health. Being sedentary can affect your metabolism which can lead to weigh gain No need to despair because e Move more often together the benefits of moving more if applicable to all ages, its a wonderful habit for the whole family to get into. There are a mountain of benefits in store for you when you become more active. Feeling firmer, feeling younger, improving your mindset, strengthen your bones, joints and muscles. Reducing your risk of type 2 diabetes and some cancers. Spending more quality time as a family can improve family dynamics and encourage children to become active. Activity can assist you in maintaining your dream weight too.
14 | Connect Kerry | February 2019
The important thing to remember here too is that it really doesn’t matter how fast you move its how long you move for! Great news if you are at the start of your weight loss journey. So to start out, aim to do a bit more activity than you usually do, 5-10 mins per day, and build active habits into your day for example taking the stairs really does count. Increase your activity levels in small steady steps over time. Fit activity into most days of the week make it a part of your daily life. 10 mins activity carried out over three days per week is more beneficial than doing it for 30 mins. When comfortable at that level and you find that you are now fitting it into your daily routine aim to gradually increase the activity that you do. Your long term goal is at least 30 mins activity five times per week. To help you start off...find a friend of family member to join you if practical. This buddy system can be used to motivate and support each other. Early morning workout leave your clothes by your bed so you can easily slip into them. Late evening walkers leaving your runners by the front door can be a good prompt. Using canned goods or bottled water as simple arm weights to do a home work out. Check social media for local walking groups at the moment there are loads of Couch to 5K groups available in towns and villages throughout the county. Incorporating of activity can’t be saved up and stored away so the key to success is to keep doing it. Soon the feelings of wellness, pleasure and enjoyment will be worth it. Once you have gradually built up your activity levels you may want to try more vigorous activities like running, fitness class, swimming, aerobics, zumba or soccer to improve your strength and stamina. Slimming World groups encourage and actively support members to increase their activity atTo help you start off...find a friend of family member to join you if practical. for Winter Weddings Thinking of a Winter Wedding? This time of the year is fast becoming one of the most popular seasons to tie the knot. It will be guaranteed to make an impression as it will be a wonderful change from the typical spring and summer weddings. Sunshine can never be relied upon in Ireland, but a stunning location can guarantee the perfect setting for a magical winter wedding day.
Here are a few top tips to make your Winter Wedding extra special: 1. Location – having a location with a dramatic backdrop will ensure the perfect day in all weather. A beautiful location with panoramic views of the sea and mountains and not to mention a stunning winter sunset will guarantee some beautiful photos. 2. Add some magic! Winter weddings ooze romance and creating that romantic glow and warmth for your wedding will be so simple. Candles, lanterns and fairy lights will create a magical scene from the moment the sun starts to set. Light your outside walkways and dress up any exterior. 3. Décor – from nature themes, winter wonderland to rustic pine cones or
pumpkins. Winters warm rich colour palette allows you to be bold when creating your wintery centrepieces with reds, purples, plums, dark greens and more. Add a snow globe or pine cones for your cake topper! 4. The Menu – Winter is the perfect season for indulgence and the perfect excuse to add delicious wintery comfort foods your guests will adore. Add some mulled wine or hot apple cider to create that warm cosy feeling. 5. The Honeymoon – Jetting off from the cold to enjoy a sunny honeymoon adventure will be all the sweeter! Wedding Financial Advice Firstly, many congratulations on getting engaged, while this can be a very exciting time for any couple, it can also cause a major financial strain on both partners. The average cost of a wedding (including a honeymoon) in Ireland costs €24,427 (Source: WeddingsOnline, Jan 2017). Here are some top tips from your local credit union to help get prepared for your big day and avoid some financial pitfalls. Top tip #1 Prepared a wedding budget (and stick to it!) The first thing you should do to prepare for your wedding is to discuss the wedding budget with your partner. A useful tool is the wedding budget planner on the Competition and Consumer Protection’s consumer website (ccpc.ie). It will help you calculate all costs, big and small. It will help you to prioritise your spending, helping you decide what is really important for you on the big day and what can be cut. Top tip # 2 Keep saving (even after the wedding!) Identify any current savings and decide on a regular amount that you can afford to put aside on a regular basis until your big day. Why not open a joint account in the credit union (if available in your credit union) and start saving. You should try and save as much of the wedding costs as you can in advance and minimise the amount you need to borrow. If you are lucky enough to receive cash gifts for your wedding, why not lodge them into the credit union also, a safe place your money, where you can access when you want. Top tip #3 Clear debts Try and clear as many debts as you can such as credit cards, overdrafts, personal loans etc before you start saving. Starting married life with debt can create a headache for both partners as additional costs such as mortgages, education or childcare may occur in the future. Top tip #4 Keeping account of your wedding spending Once you have set your budget and start to purchase items for your wedding, it is a good idea to keep track of your spending to ensure you stick with your budget. There are several wedding budget apps available online or alternatively use an Excel spreadsheet to keep a record. Top tip #5 Borrow wisely If you are borrowing for your wedding, compare rates from all the financial providers. Many credit unions offer specific wedding loan products with competitive rates. They may also offer short term bridging finance to cover costs until wedding cash gifts are received. Borrow as little as possible and don’t be tempted to spread the payments too far into the future. This will cost you more in interest and could have an impact on your future plans. Avoid putting wedding expenses on credit cards and overdrafts as the APR on this type of finance can be high. By borrowing from the credit union you benefit from free loan protection, no hidden fees or charges and flexible repayment terms. Your local credit union has your best interests at heart, so try and support them as much as possible. For information on credit unions locally see www.creditunion.ie. Top tip #6: Insurance (of all types!) Consider taking out wedding insurance as it offers you more security if something does go wrong -such as cancellation, or a trader failing to deliver a service. Many insurance providers offer wedding insurance so make sure you know what the policy covers and compare costs before you buy. If you are planning a honeymoon of a lifetime, ensure that you have all the cover you need when it comes to travel insurance. The credit union in partnership with Coveru.ie can offer competitive travel insurance rates that are exclusive to our members and will make sure you have the right level of cover for your honeymoon. Top tip #7: After the wedding If you are changing address or moving house after the wedding, make sure to bring your new address identification into the credit union (a utility bill, bank statement, revenue document etc). If you wish to change the name on the account from maiden name to married name (bring in marriage certificate also) and photographic ID such as a passport or drivers licence. For more information on your local credit union visit www.creditunion.ie 26 | Connect Kerry | February 2019
Hi Lovely Readers, Happy New Year to you all seems a little stale saying it now but we have a very nice editor Margaret and she gave us all a month off so as this is my first piece for 2019 it would be rude not to send the good wishes. In retail the year is broken up into events rather than seasons, mind you that is how it works with us in That's Perfect. At the moment we are preparing for the confirmations, communions, and weddings. The confirmations are a little more of a casual affair so ladies if you have a dress in the wardrobe that you wore to a wedding last year bring it on in an we will spruce it up, add a pop of colour and voila a brand new look. You may have to invest in new outfit for communion as it is a more dressy day, (I will have to get dressed up my self in May as my adorable Grand niece Amelie has her big day). The golden rule here with us is, bring in the outfit and then leave the rest to us, and ladies remember it is never too early to go looking for the perfect outfit for any occasion, a week doesnt go by that I wouldn't have a lady in wondering when she should start looking for shoes, bag and fasinator for a wedding in 6 months time. There is never a wrong time and let me assure you call in as often as you want to us, we get a a great sense of satisfaction when a customer leaves with a stress free smile. New stock is arriving daily so please call in and have a look and sure if all you need is a hug or a smile to get you through your day we always have a stock of those. Until next time keep smiling I am off now to open all the Valentine Cards ..... I wish

Choosing that perfect tipple for your wedding guests A very important part of your wedding menu is when you have to decide which wine to serve to your guests. Traditionally every couple were offered a limited choice of wines by the hotel or wedding venue at their standard price or with a symbolic discount. But in recent years couples are paying more attention to their wine choice and they demand better quality and value in their wines, so they are asking us to bring their own chosen wine to the venue (where you might be charged just a small “corkage” fee) but by buying your own wine, you are availing of many advantages: - Saves money: Even taking into consideration the “corkage” fee by your venue, you will end up paying less for your wine (average savings of €500) - Personalised wine: Make your wine unique and original by personalising the label with a customised design, your names and wedding date, at no extra cost* - Hassle free: Once you have decided your
30 | Connect Kerry | February 2019
favourite wine and label, we will take care of everything else and have it ready and delivered to the reception venue. - Massive range of choices: at Terra, you will be able to choose from a wide variety of wine varieties and styles and always guided by one of our team members that will be happy to assist you. Here are also a few tips to keep on mind that will help you when choosing your wine: - Wine style: There are always a few safer choices like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Tempranillo that will please most of your guests because they are easier to drink with lower alcohol level, medium bodied and fruitier choices. Other varieties like Chardonnay, Shiraz, Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon tend to be full bodied, oaky, spicy and higher in alcohol content and they won’t suit most of your guests at your party. - Seasonality: It is also important to consider the weather conditions as, generally
speaking, summer months with warmer weather and sunny skies tend to consume more white wine than red as they will be a more refreshing and lighter choice. - Your guest’s “profile”: As an average, your guests will drink ¾ of a bottle per guest, but you need to keep on mind too of how many of them will be underage, non-drinkers or more of a Guinness drinker style guest. To be safe always go a bit higher than the average to ensure no one at your reception will be left unhappy. - Sparkling choice: for your cocktail reception or toast you have a wide selection of sparkling choices, from sparkling white wines and Prosecco to Cava or Champagne they all vary in styles, quality and prices and they can be that extra touch to your special day. New Year, New Skincare from Clinique @CH Tralee By Breda
Can great skin be created? Yes it can! This is a great time of the year to start thinking about starting new routines or getting back into them after the busy festive period just gone …. Starting or restarting a good skincare routine is the best thing you can do for your skin. From my own experience you will only stick to it if you tailor it to suit your lifestyle. I treat my routine as my “me time” where I am focusing on myself even if it is just 5 minutes. Start each day by cleansing the skin to wake it up and prepare it for serum, eye cream and day time moisturiser. Cleanse at night time to clean away make –up, dirt or pollution from the day. Then apply your serum, eye cream and night moisturiser. Clinique are now giving you the power to truly personalise your skincare routine. They have just launched Clinique ID. This new moisturising system is made up of two parts. You start by picking your base moisturiser. You have a choice of 3 to choose from: 1) Silky lotion for dry skin 2) Oil – Control Gel for oily skin 3) Lightweight oil-free water Jelly for all skin types Then you pick your treatment cartridge which you choose to cater for your personal skin concern – there are 5 to choose from 1)lines and wrinkles 2) Fatigue 3) Uneven skin tone for pigmentation 4) Uneven skin texture for pores 5)Irritation Once you are happy with your choice you pop the cartridge into the base moisturiser and away you go. The moisturiser and booster from the cartridge mix together and can be applied in one easy step. The total cost is €45. Just call in and I will help you pick the one for you!

As guests arrive at your wedding reception, it is important that they experience a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Having the right live music at your drinks reception is very important. It will set the tone for the rest of your special day and create the right ambience for you and your guests. Having a musician who can respond to your guests and deliver music to suit their needs rather than sticking to a routine set of tunes will make the day special for everyone. The music at your drinks reception should have something for everyone - regardless of age. This will break the ice and help guests feel relaxed and included. When you arrive, your guests will be mingling and chatting and ready to celebrate your big day. Why not make your pre-dinner drinks reception stylishly different and wow your guests with the beautiful sound of the saxophone. John Collins is a saxophonist with a modern rich tone and high quality sound. Tralee born John is an experienced, trained musician. He played in London for wedding receptions and social events for many years. He now plays regularly at Ballyroe Heights and other venues throughout Kerry. John is passionate about making your day really special. He is flexible on music choices and has over 1500 tunes to suit all tastes, including contemporary, jazz and classic songs. John will create the perfect atmosphere on your wedding day and will include a special tune for the bride and groom to make the day more personal for them. Add a touch of class to your pre-dinner drinks reception and give your guests a unique and memorable experience. Music in the Kingdom MEETS GEMMA SUGRUE
Gemma Sugrue is a name we all recognise here in Kerry, she has come a long way from her classical singing days in Killarney and is only going from strength to strength with her many adventures in the world of music from travelling the world giving and attending masterclasses with some of the industry’s greatest names, becoming culture night kerry ambassador all while continuing to grow her own vocal studios ‘voiceworks studios’ in cork city, Bandon and her home town of Killarney, Gemma has been the standout at the ‘jenny greene and the rte concert orchestra’ sets and at the end of last year decided to release her first very own Album of original music with the Julian Colarassi quartet titled ‘in my nature’. This March she is coming home to give a vocal masterclass and workshop in voiceworks studio Killarney in March so we caught up with her to hear more about what she’s been up to. Gemma, firstly for those that might not know, tell us about your time in Kerry before jetting off to music college, what and who were your influences in Kerry? I was never short of an amazing role model in my growing up in Kerry. My first music teacher was Mrs. Eileen O’Shea who ignited the spark of musical creativity in me when I was only 9 or 10 by giving me compositional assignments for solo piano. My homework might be to write a piece for solo piano entitled “An Evening by the Lake”. My next musical role model was my singing teacher Audrey O’Carroll who taught me voice from the age of 15. She too encouraged my compositional creativity helping me assemble a small orchestra in my school, Colaiste Ide for which I composed a piece for. I also fell in love with art songs, oratorio and opera under Audrey’s tutelage. How did your career as a vocalist after college really take off? How did the pop performer bug bite you? Before I started college I got a call to tour with various small Irish dance shows. A week after completing the Leaving Cert. I was on a plane to Australia and I continued touring with these productions for 2 years. Then it was time for me to “get my act together” and complete my BMus degree. I joined a soul band when I was in Cork, that’s what you do when you’re in Cork, they’re all about the soul and funk bands! We covered lot’s of Motown, Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, it was so much fun and a step away from my more classical path. I was always into gospel-influenced music growing up, putting that passion together with a great band was magic. You have had an amazing time with ‘jenny greene and the concert orchestra’ how did it come about and what have you learned from doing those gigs as a vocalist? I got a call from the coordinator of the RTE Concert Orchestra, Mary Sexton a few weeks out from Electric Picnic 2016 wondering if I’d 44 | Connect Kerry | February 2019

be up for singing 90s bangers with Jenny Greene and the RTE Concert Orchestra. I pretended for a moment to be chill, said I’d check the diary then responded with a hell ya! That gig turned in to the epic the concert series that it is now! I had no expectations on the first gig, I didn’t know if anyone would show up and I didn’t really experience singing with the orchestra until the soundcheck that day so it was all a euphoric blur. It wasn’t until we were booked to play the 3 Arena the following November that I started to panic and knew I needed to grow as a performer. I had seen so many international superstars perform in this venue, I needed to up my game! So I locked myself away in my home office practicing every day, visualising the worst case scenarios that could happen on the night and planned and prepared to offset those possible outcomes that would be in my control with preparation. I took skype lessons with some of my favourite voice coaches too. In my opinion, it was the best show I’ve ever sung to date and I owe that to my fear of it. I was so intimidated by this performance opportunity, the terror gave me incredible focus in preparation and on stage. You recently launched your very first original album, congratulations! Tell us about that journey, the style and how has it gone down so far. It’s a jazz album. I recorded it with four amazing musicians I started singing with whilst living in Dublin last year. The guitarist and bandleader, Julien Colarossi invited me to sing with his jazz quartet one Tuesday night in the International Bar and we had a lot of fun, I was blown away by their musicianship, their soundness and their good looks! So we continued this gig once a month which led to us recording an album last July which I’m so incredibly proud of. It’s available online on all the usual platforms; iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp. Back to your world of teaching, You opened ‘Voiceworks studio’ in cork in 2011 and it has grown to be a renowned school for vocalists to go to. What makes Voiceworks different in your opinion? It’s a specialised school for singers but welcomes singers of all ages, levels and styles. All of the classes, lessons, events, workshops and masterclasses are designed for singers. We’re also not attached to a particular musical genre, so we explore contemporary music from jazz to trad to musical theatre to pop with the students as well as classical music. We see the merit in allowing students to sing what they want to sing and then it’s our job to design the musical and performance related learning outcomes within their chosen repertoire. I’m very pro-active as a vocal coach myself in the area of upskilling. I obsessively attend voice conferences and events around the world to ensure I’ve always got the most cutting edge insight and knowledge on best teaching practices. I then invite my favourite experts from around the world to train my teachers in Ireland. I’ve gone one better this year and I will be welcoming my favourite 3-day voice conference, Vocology in Practice, to Cork April 4th-7th.
You’ve given and attended workshops all over the world, how do they benefit vocalists and performers? It’s an opportunity to be truly inspired by someone who is incredibly passionate about their topic. Their passion usually means they have a lot to offer by the way of advice and expertise too. I think everyone who leaves a good workshop or masterclass will have a changed perspective or deeper understanding of some aspect of singing and will feel more fired up about pursuing it as a hobby or career. Who has been the most influential and informative in your own personal experience? That is such a tough one. Superstar backing vocalist and performance coach from L.A, KJ Rose. I think she has magic communication powers. She’s such an engaging speaker. After her workshop in Voiceworks last year I got so many messages, some said wow, thank you that workshop was amazing etc. and almost all of the messages included an important question like; who designed your website? Have you a contact number for that photographer? Do you know a good music manager? She inspired everyone in the room to start taking some action in their music careers and that’s golden! You are giving a workshop and masterclass in Voiceworks studio Kerry on March 14th, What should vocalists and performers expect in a workshop from you? I sure am. I need to deposit some of my overflowing enthusiasm and excitement for singing and vocal coaching into our singing community here in Kerry! I want to share some of the light bulb moments I’ve had with vocal technique, I want to prove to everyone that there are unlimited possibilities with the human voice and that you just need to know how to unlock them! I want everyone leaving the workshop thinking; “wow, I didn’t think my voice could do that!” All in all 2018 was another well deserved successful year for you. In your own words what have been the standout achievements for you this year? And what are the plans for 2019 so we can keep an eye out. I’m so proud that I finally released my first album. Childhood Gemma would be really pleased about this, to write and record my own music has always been my biggest dream. I plan on writing and recording more and I will continue to do all of the things that I love with the people I love and I will try to always make time to be grateful for everything! Make their Special Day Even More Special First Holy Communion is a very special day in our little ones lives, more so than confirmation I think because they are a little more mature and have their own thoughts whereas the innocence of the day and the sheer excitement in the buildup is such a wonderful time. I think personally the schools do a fantastic job preparing our children for this day and we should all respect the work that goes into it all, and this needs to be remembered as the real reason and cannot get lost in the planning of the day, but having said that it’s a day to gather family and friends and have a good day. So with that in mind how do you plan the perfect day- firstly the dress/suit is most important. We asked Denise at Divas and Dudes for some advice.....
Divas Dudes is the place to go for the best choice in First Holy Communion Dresses and Boys Suiting. It’s a very special event in any Girls or Boys life and requires a lot of help and advice. At Divas&Dudes we have years of experience to help you choose the perfect Holy Communion Dress or Suit. We cherry pick our styles from the best designers to ensure we provide the best styles and the most elegant looks. Don’t forget the all-important photos PHOTOGRAPHS are also very important to ensure that memories last a lifetime, John Walsh Photography have been creating family memories for many years now so we ask them to remind parents what are the most important things when getting the correct photos of the special day. John is based in Ballybeggan and can create your memories in your own home or at their studio whichever suits you best, so book your appointment today. Communions are normally the first important event in your child’s life and capturing the innocent look that is still clearly visible at that age is priceless. We would always advise that the formal pictures required be taken as early as possible to ensure the best attention from the happy child. Always remember to include rosary beads, prayer books and accessories that are part of the outfit. We would also advise to ensure grandparents, godparents and any other relevant relations are included for shots with the child as these can become wonderful memories to have in years to come. Our best tip for the day is to try and relax, if a parent is stressed about the day it will become evident in the faces of all the family and in turn will be captured on camera, so please relax and enjoy the day. Planning the party to celebrate is a personal thing some opt for large and lavish others small and intimate but the main thing is to enjoy and ensure it’s what your little one wants, after all its their day.

The National Live Life Film Competition for 2019 was officially launched on Thursday 10th January 2019 in Kerry College of Further Education. This is the 6th year of this hugely popular competition in memory of Tralee teenager Donal Walsh. The Competition aims to continue to spread Donal's positive message as he began an anti-suicide conversation before he lost his cancer battle in 2013. Groups and individuals of all ages and abilities are invited to submit a two min film clip on a theme linked to positive thinking/living. This year's theme is "It All Works Out!" The fully-sponsored competition, now in its 6th year, culminates in the highly acclaimed annual awards ceremony attended by over 800 people with celebrity guests and bands. This year only the primary school awards will be presented at the Live Life Awards Ceremony. A new element is being introduced for the secondary school and adult entries as the shortlisted and winning entries will be screened on the big cinema screens at a separate Award Ceremony. The competition is fully sponsored and supported by local businesses and organisations and the event manager for the competition, Mary Lucey Principal of Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) stated that without this ongoing sponsorship and support, the competition would not continue and could not have grown from strength to strength as it has. This year will also see the assistance from Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) teachers and student groups in the organisation and management of the competition. Well known film and creative experts will judge the competition including Maurice Galway, Director of Dingle International Film Festival and Dingle Animation, Award Winning Producer Lisa Fingleton, Award Winning Creative Designer Paul Ruane; TV Producer Brian Hurley; Award Winning Author and Screenwriter Ailbhe Keogan; Actress, Writer and Producer Maeve McGrath and more.
