Welcome to April, hopefully it will bring some nice weather as we have the Easter Break nearly upon us.

It’s been a busy March, we had a wonderful day on March 12th at the Rose Hotel for our Connect Kerry Hair and Beauty Awards, recognising the industry in the county it was great fun and we are delighted to bring you a taste of the day here this issue.

We also chat to Claudia Carroll (Nicola from Fair city) she tells us about her new book, life and her real friendship with Niamh.

The Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards are really heating up now for its third year, with lots of wonderful nominations coming in, we are still taking nominations and invite you to nominate yourself or a lady you feel worthy of nomination, we have received a lot of ladies nominating themselves this year which we are truly delighted with as it shows the pride you have in yourself and your business to take that next step, its always wonderful and is already proving very popular with tickets to the gala ball being reserved already.

We have all the usual contributors with lots of advice and Lizzie Lyons is in the Kitchen cooking up a storm for Easter, and speaking of Easter make sure to spend some all-important time with family and friends, it’s a celebration so enjoy.

Claudia’s Little Secrets

By Marisa Reidy FAIR City fans will know her best as snotty-faced snob, Nicola Prendergast, but in reality, actor and author Claudia Carroll is a million miles from her on-screen character. Bubbly, witty and remarkably open and friendly, the Dublin-born star is the polar opposite of the cold-hearted Nicola we’ve loved to hate for decades.

Speaking to Connect ahead of the release of her latest novel, Our Little Secret, Claudia Carroll was charm personified and was more than willing to give her Kerry fans an insight into the woman behind that TV face!

While currently taking a break from Fair City after an explosive comeback just weeks ago, Claudia is now concentrating on promoting her new book – her 14th in as many years. Despite being heralded as a bestselling author here at home and reaching the top 10 best seller list in the UK, the stunning author says she takes nothing for granted.

“I pinch myself every day that I’m still here, 14 books later, doing what I love,” she said. “Never in my wildest dreams, when I wrote my first book all those years ago, did I ever think I’d still be doing this. As the saying goes, ‘you’re only as good as your last book’, so I never take anything for granted.”

Like all of her books, Claudia’s first novel was influenced by real life events and everyday occurrences – but like many wanna–be authors, she sat on the idea for years. It wasn’t until she was working on Fair City that a former colleague convinced her to show her work to a publisher. The rest, as they say, is history.

“My first book was based on an idea I had many, many years ago while working on a film. Of course I thought this film would be my fast track to Hollywood but it turned out it wasn’t anything of note in the end,” Claudia laughed.

“But I remember while we were filming in Castle Leslie I met so many insane characters off camera. There was a cross dresser and a man in his 90s who went to raves and I just thought how wonderful it would be to turn the cameras around.

Then I thought wouldn’t it be interesting to have this stately home and have its eccentric owner, who’s down on his luck, rent it out for money.”

Claudia admits that the draft of her book stayed in a drawer for almost 10 years until a director on Fair City – who had just recently published her first book - convinced her to show it to her publisher.

“I remember her telling me that there will never be a good time to do this so I gave her the first three chapters, she gave it to her agent, and thankfully it went from there,” Claudia explained. “I got my first book deal back in 2003 and it’s been a book a year every year since, which is still incredible.”

When asked if she believed in the popular theory that there’s a good book in everyone, Claudia said absolutely – but warned that anyone hoping to see their story become a reality must be made of strong stuff.

“I absolutely believe there is a book in everyone, but what I would say is that you cannot be precious,” she said. “You’re going to get criticism from publishers so you have to have a thick skin. People often put up barriers. They say ‘oh if only I had more time’ or ‘I don’t think the idea is good enough’ - but now is the time. And for those out there who, like me, have that book in the drawer, I say that drawer is your best friend so take it out and go for it.”

beginning, middle and end. If you can’t do it in 1,000 words and feel you have so much more to write and so many characters to develop, then you’re onto something.”

While admitting that getting the book published is the biggest challenge, Claudia said that there are so many other routes available now instead of going directly to a publisher – from self publishing, to agents who know exactly what publishers are looking for, to professional readers who give constructive and useful feedback.

Claudia’s latest book, while loosely based on the old Bette Davis film, All About Eve, is again very much influenced by real events and real people. The main character, Sarah Keyes, has the perfect life – a high flying job, a beautiful daughter and a house to die for.

Yet after taking pity on a struggling graduate who can’t get a job, her life is turned upside down - and she is left peering in through her own kitchen window while this other woman enjoys it all.

“This is a lot darker than my usual books but when I was researching it, so many people said ‘oh don’t talk to me about users’. This young girl is an arch manipulator and user who calculates what she can get out of Sarah to advance her own agenda,” Claudia explained.

But for all the fame and fortune that has come with being a best-selling author , the most rewarding aspect for Claudia is having time to spend with her elderly parents – who she cares for. She revealed that her mom has just recently undergone cancer treatment, while her dad, who turns 80 this year, has gone blind.

“I live right beside my parents and I care for them, as I don’t have kids of my own,” Claudia explained. “I am so, so privileged that my job allows me to do it because they are getting old and it’s my aim t keep them well. We spend so much time together and I am genuinely so happy that I can do it.

“Dad is blind now, so getting him out socially is getting harder, but we love to go to the National Theatre of Ireland events in the cinema, for example, and experience something beautiful coming to us live from London.”

Of course no conversation with Claudia Carroll would be complete without mentioning her on-screen character, Nicola, who Fair City fans have loved to hate since she first burst onto our screens.

to-be ruined ex, Paul Brennan – and Claudia loved every second of it.

“Nicola is a great character to play. She’s so awful and patronising and superior and really gets up peoples noses but she would kill for her son. He walks on water as far as she is concerned and she is there to ensure that he gets exactly what he is entitled to,” Claudia explained. “She’s definitely the type of person you’d want on your side in a situation like that.”

Claudia also revealed that despite their hateful onscreen relationship, she and actress Clelia Murphy (who plays Paul’s new wife Niamh Cassidy) are the best of friends in real life and hang out together regularly – a situation that often causes many a raised eyebrow when out and about.

“We’ve been in airports and people see us together and can’t figure out what’s going on. People have even warned me that she’s around. It’s hilarious,” Claudia joked. “Clelia and I are the best of friends and in fact we’re heading off to London soon with Clelia’s daughter for a few days together. She’s a fabulous person.”

As for a return to Carrigstown for Nicola and Oisín any time soon - all Claudia could advise was to ‘watch this space.’

Skin Sense The past few months of exposing our skin to central heating and harsh cold air may well have left our skin feeling de-hydrated. Drinking plenty of water is vital to moisturise the skin from the inside and it also helps to flush toxins away. Suffers of exceptionally dry skin may benefit from taking a daily supplement of HYALURONIC ACID during the winter months. It is naturally found in the body as part of the connective tissue. Kerins O Rahillys take to the Dancefloor

Kerins O Rahillys hosted their inaugural Strictly Come Dancing on March 25th at the Brandon Hotel, the hall was packed with supporters and the dancers didn’t disappoint. Overall public vote winner was Ogie Moran and Eileen O Shea, while Rosie McGrath and Dominic Walker wooed the judges with their performance. A wonderful night was had by all, Main Sponsor of the event Bernie Falvey of Ballyseedy Home and Garden said she was delighted to be able to support such a great club and has wonderful memories herself from family times spent there.

The Committee would like to thank all who supported in anyway and look forward to more events through the year.

Easter Dining with Lizzie

Slow roast shoulder of Ring of Kerry lamb ------------------------1.5kg of Ring of Kerry lamb shoulder off the bone 4-5 cloves of garlic 2 tablespoons of olive oil Juice of 1 lemon 4 slivers of anchovy in oil 2 sprigs of rosemary with leaves removed 2 red onions cut into chunks 1 cup of white wine 1 cup of water ------------------------1. Preheat the oven to 160C/320FH/Gas Mark 3.

2. In a food processor, blitz together the anchovies, olive oil, garlic cloves, juice of lemon and rosemary leaves to make a paste.

3. Rub the paste all over the lamb shoulder until it is well coated.

4. Roll the shoulder into a cylinder shape with the skin side on the outside.

5. Scatter the red onion chunks and lemon portions left over from juicing over the base of roasting tin. Place the shoulder on top.

6. Roast for one hour.

7. Add cup of wine and cup of water to base of roasting tin.

Continue to roast for a further 2.5 to 3 hours.

8. Remove from oven and allow to rest for 10 minutes.

9. Cut into portions and serve with juice from roasting tin, veg of choice and some mint sauce.

Pros: Lamb shoulder is a cheap cut, it’s really tender when slow cooked, great coming into spring, exceptionally easy, great for entertaining a big crowd.

Lizzie Lyons is a North Kerry based chef and also has a regular slot on TV3 Sunday mornings.

Sweet potato, feta cheese and sundried tomato gratin ---------------------------2 large sweet potatoes, peeled and cut into thin rounds 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped 1 teaspoon of thyme leaves 25g of sundried tomato finely chopped 50g parmesan cheese grated + extra to grate on top of gratin 50g feta cheese 2 cups of cream or alternatively 1 cup cream + 1 cup milk Salt & pepper Olive oil ------------------------1. Preheat the oven to 160C/320FH/Gas Mark 3.

2. Use a little olive oil to grease the base of an ovenproof dish.

3. Layer the bottom with the thin rounds of sweet potato, scatter some thyme leaves, parmesan, sundried tomato, feta and garlic on top and season with salt and pepper. Repeat the process until all ingredients are used. You should be aiming for 3-4 layers.

4. Pour the cream on top and cover with foil.

5. Place in the oven.

6. After 40 minutes remove the foil and place gratin back in the oven for a further 25-30 minutes.

7. Remove from oven and let it rest for 10 mins before serving.

Coconut rice pudding with fresh raspberries and mint --------------------------250g of pearl rice 400ml can of coconut milk 600ml of water 4 tablespoons of coconut palm sugar 225g of raspberry (usually what’s in a punnet) 4 sprigs of mint A little desiccated coconut for serving ------------------------1. Place rice in a heavy bottomed saucepan, add the 600ml of water and slowly simmer until water has evaporated.

2. Add can of coconut milk and slowly simmer for a further 1015 minutes until the rice has thickened up and is plump.

3. Add the coconut palm sugar, reserving a little for serving.

4. Divide into bowls. Top with fresh raspberries, the mint , a sprinkle of coconut palm sugar and desiccated coconut.

Pros: Easy, tasty, suitable for vegans, no refined sugar, great for this cold weather, kids love it.

Beauty Corner

It was great to meet so many of you recently at the Connect Hair and Beauty Awards in the Rose Hotel. I really enjoyed the afternoon so much and it was great to have such positive feedback on this monthly column.

After the busy month of March I took a much needed long weekend break where I did nothing more than light exercise and catch up on precious beauty sleep. This got me to thinking about the benefits of sleep on our mind, body, soul and of course our skin. We all know that we need our sleep to function at our best but what can we do to disguise the signs of tiredness when we just can’t manage to catch the zzzzzz train?

One the most obvious signs of lack of sleep is the dreaded dark circles under the eyes. Fret not my beauties as I have a simple technique tried and tested to help you disguise them!

First try to neutralise the blue tones under the eyes by applying a peachy coloured colour corrector and patting into the dark circle. Next, add some light to the area by using a luminescent eye brightener. Anything lightly pearlised will detract the signs of tiredness and bring a pop of light to the area.

The next step is to conceal. To get the best result and the brightest effect use a concealer ever so slightly lighter than your foundation and make a ‘V’ shape under the eye with the point of the V on top of the cheekbone. Blend the colour into the V shape to bring light to the eye area and give a really well rested look (I love this trick!). Finally, you can set the area with a fine loose powder. Try not over-powder the area as you do not want the powder sinking into fine lines around the eyes.

The key is to blend each step well and be light handed with the powder, using a fluffy brush instead of a powder puff or sponge.

All that’s left is to sit back and accept the compliments that come your way while planning to get a good nights sleep!

Hi Readers, Everyone has something they won’t leave the house without, be it lipstick, mascara, full make up, spray of perfume the list goes on; for me it’s all of the above and more I add heels and jewellery to that (how very vain am I).

This month I am going to concentrate on jewellery to enhance any outfit. At the moment we have a vast range of beautiful and affordable necklaces, lots of colours and styles as you can see from photos included.

As with everything to do with accessorising no rule is written in stone but I usually recommend a drop necklace with V neckline and a flat necklace with round neckline.

Pearls never date and can make a simple black or navy dress very elegant after all Audrey Hepburn seemed to think so.

Earrings are a very personal thing do you wear stud earrings, drop earrings, hoops clip ons decisions decisions all you need to do is call in to us and choose as we Always have an ever expanding range of both clip ons and pierced.

I am going to sign off now and mark off the days until Easter Sunday as I have given up chocolate for Lent.

Panadol & Ibuprofen use in children Panadol has analgesic and moderate antipyretic properties.

Oral Panadol is used in children for mild to moderate pain and fever. Rectal preparations or suppositories are also available.

With oral formulations most of the drug is absorbed, less so with rectal preparations, thus higher doses are needed for the latter. Panadol is not absorbed through the lining of the stomach. Food delays the absorption but the overall extent of absorption is unchanged, it just takes the drug longer to reach affective levels the system.

The analgesic affects start after twenty minutes.

High temperatures in children cause parental anxiety and is a common reason for seeking medical attention.

High temperatures that are not causing discomfort or distress to the patient should not be treated with Panadol or Ibuprofen. Also a traditional remedy such as tepid sponging is also not now recommended.

It may be helpful in the very short term in removing perspiration but it constricts skin blood vessels thus preventing the body from perspiring thus temperature rises again.

Prescribers and caregivers should be aware of the risk of overdose and should ensure that the appropriate strength of product is prescribed usually 120mg per 5mls.

The maximum dose over 24 hours is 75mg per kilogram.

The standard unit dose is 15mg per kilogram.

It is best to use weight rather than age when calculating dose as overweight and underweight children may be inappropriately dosed. It is the commonest drug cited in accidental overdose in children and the consequences can be serious.

Common errors leading to overdose: (1) Administration of other over the counter medications containing Panadol which is not recognised.

(2) Exceeding recommended daily dosages (3) Increased dose frequency (4) Children receiving double doses (5) Use of incorrect measuring devices (6) News of different concentrations of Panadol for example 5mls of one preparation may contain a different milligram amount of Panadol to another (7) Failure to understand prescriptions Ibuprofen widely used in children and after Panadol is one of most commonly prescribed medications.

The treatment of fever with Panadol or Ibuprofen is controversial as fever is the normal response of the body to infection unless the child seems distressed or symptomatic fever alone is not an indication to be routinely treated.

Combined therapy with Panadol is commonly undertaken but is unhelpful. It is perceived that it is better, it is better because of the longer action of Ibuprofen not because of the combination.

It can be given orally, rectally or as a gel. Ibuprofen is absorbed right from the stomach in contrast to Panadol thus it is faster acting than Panadol. If gel is used on the skin for a local joint problem, the absorption is about 5% of the oral form.

Ibuprofen should not be used in Chicken Pox as it increases the incidence of tissue infections and other serious infections such as Streptococcus. It should not be used in dehydrated children such as with Gastroenteritis as it increases the risk of kidney damage. When comparing Panadol against Ibuprofen for fever reduction, current evidence suggests that there is no substantial difference between the two but Ibuprofen acts faster and lasts longer and is less toxic in overdose. Dose of Ibuprofen is 10mg per kilogram per dose six hourly.

When comparing Panadol against Ibuprofen for pain relief in the absence of inflammation Panadol maybe a little better. If there is pain associated with inflammation Brufen may have a better anti-inflammatory component than Panadol.

Examination time can be very stressful, both for students and their parents. Stress can lead in many circumstances to tooth grinding. People need to be aware of tooth grinding as it can not only damage teeth but also cause tension headaches, muscle pain in the head and neck and even long term damage to the TMJ- ( This is the joint between the jaw and the base of the skull). If left untreated, clenching and grinding of teeth can cause teeth to fracture, leading to dental treatment that could have been avoided. Many people grind their teeth during daytime activities. It is more common however during sleep. Acrylic night-guards can be made to fit over the teeth and can help to reduce tooth wear and fracture when worn at night. They do not stop the grinding habit. Cerezen ear devices can also be helpful in many cases. These are plastic ear pieces that are inserted into the ear canal and they can help to break the habit of grinding as they keep the ear canal space open and do not allow undue pressure to be applied to the area. Meeting the Real You Think about who you are. Who are you really?

Think about the you that everybody sees – neighbours, colleagues, strangers in the shops. This person may be capable, funny, self-contained. Maybe always ready with a joke, always cheerful and smiling. Perhaps you are always well-groomed, with your hair done and your makeup on. What sort of expression do you wear? Aloof? Disapproving? Confident?

Now think about the you that only your family or very close friends see. Do they see the cranky side? The fearful side? The overwhelmed side? Are you sarcastic and cutting with them? Maybe you vent your frustration with them, or let them see your vulnerability. Now, look at the you that you don’t let anybody see. The you that you hide from everybody, even those closest to you. This is the secret self, the part that you never show, that makes you feel ashamed and worthless.

This is the self that causes lack of self-esteem, feelings of not being good enough or strong enough, or just enough. Interestingly, though, that’s not the real you.

The real you is even deeper still, even more hidden. It is the you that came into the world when you were born, and it is pure light. It is a noble soul, precious and valuable, and nothing changes that. We simply lose sight of it because of what happens to us. It takes time, courage and effort to reconnect with that real self, but it is a vital journey, and one we should all make.

On arrival at the House of Glamour one would think.... wow so much happening in one space, I was seated at a nail station where at least 8 busy nail fairies were creating masterpieces with different styles of nails. I was having the gel style done and have to admit not having them done before was unsure what to expect. The therapist began and we choose a length (which was much too long now that I have had time to reflect on it..) the shaping began and then restructuring. This was amazing to see a finger without a nail being created into something, not for the faint hearted though the placing of nails and binding under the drying machine did cause quite a sting, but all in the name of beauty. Next it was time to choose a colour. The obvious was the old reliable red so again the repeat of the coat of paint/ the drying machine ritual until finally my nails were looking amazing, my therapist then suggested a little décor on one nail, which completed the look. I wasn’t finished there though it was off to the throne (is all I could describe it!) for a pedicure, the chair was simply divine and wouldn’t look out of place in a palace, but the treatment was fit for a queen too to be honest.. began with a gentle soak. Followed by a scrub to exfoliate the skin, with all the hard skin being removed leaving the feet feeling smooth and alive again I as simply in heaven, next up the feet were massaged with an amazing foot wash and finally the feet were dried and nails filed and painted.

I have to say it was a wonderful experience and all in all took about 2.5 hours, all through the treatments the ambience in the salon through it all was fantastic and a few times during the treatments I said to myself I would love to work here. All the girls were extremely busy but still went about their day with a smile and a chat with all the clients and I have to say that three weeks later my nails are still perfect which is definitely a first for me. I would certainly recommend it but I would also advise booking on time to avoid disappointment as they are in much demand at House of Glamour. I am certainly looking forward to going back.

Performance Appraisals

Revenue: Disclosure of Unreported Offshore Assets Revenue has recently issued letters to taxpayers outlining the new regime being introduced by the Finance Act in relation to Offshore.

Who should be worried?

It is not illegal to hold offshore accounts or assets provided any funds has been correctly taxed and any income is being disclosed.

What’s Changed?

Internationally there is now more information being exchanged between governments in relation to bank accounts, investments, and property held in different jurisdictions.

Revenue hopes this information will help identify serious tax evasion.

What is an Offshore Asset/ Income?

Although Cayman Islands, Jersey and other sunny locations come to mind, offshore assets refer to income or gains arising outside Ireland and could just as easily be an undisclosed foreign pension.

Why Disclose Now? As and from 1st May “Voluntary Disclosure” procedures will no longer apply to offshore disclosures. In simple terms, this means very high penalties which, could also impact on any other future disclosures made to revenue.

The first quarter of the year is the perfect time to conduct appraisals with your staff. Appraisals will benefit staff, management and the overall success of the business when they are conducted correctly.

A good appraisal will demonstrate clear communication in a two way process where both parties have equal opportunity to discuss the role, work performance, objectives and future goals.

Ideally it is advised that an employee is given at least one week’s notice of the proposed appraisal.

The appraiser should provide the employee with an appraisal template to be filled out by the employee prior to the meeting. This will allow the employee to take time to review their own performance and ideally identify areas of improvement. In line with this, the appraiser is expected to be prepared for the meeting by also having reviewed the employee’s skills, performance etc.

When conducting the meeting, both parties should be honest and fair in their review and feedback.

The appraiser is required to have the skills, qualities and knowledge to conduct the review. Asking the right questions is essential. The employee should be asked to be open and honest and ask questions and give feedback – they should talk 70% versus 30% appraiser. It is a good idea to ask both open and probing questions in this meeting to ensure you are getting the full picture. Clear, relevant and achievable goals should be set for the year ahead and these action plans should be agreed by both parties prior to the meeting concluding.

At least one follow up meeting should take place during the year to review the progress of the goals.

Poorly conducted performance reviews are a waste of valuable time as they will end in disagreement with no set joint objectives. The employee will leave the meeting feeling demotivated and the likelihood of performance improving after a poorly conducted appraisal is slim.
