Connect | Editor note

EDITOR NOTE Hello and welcome to Connect Business, produced to honour and celebrate our Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards. Last year saw the launch of this great event and since late last year we have had a huge number of enquiries as to when it was happening again, so we set the wheels in motion once again and I have to say I am very impressed at the number of ladies out there operating and running very successful business all over the county. We should be very proud of the strong business community we have and the strong network of women that we have spread all over the county. We would like to thank all who made this possible, our sponsors who have returned from last year and indeed the new sponsors who have joined us this year, all of whom are introduced to you here in this issue. we would ask you to take the time to recognise these businesses and support them when you have an opportunity as they have supported this event and in turn you and your business. It’s all about working local and supporting local, we in Connect Kerry are constantly saying keep it local and save a job, There is a turnaround in the economy so let’s start thinking positive and working together to ensure we all grow together and benefit from this turnaround . As we are celebrating women in business this month I would urge you to support your fellow business colleagues, and tell yourself every day There is no elevator to success You have got to take the stairs. Enjoy our publication

Ballyroe Heights Hotel It is a great honour to host the Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards 2016. I welcome finalists and families from all parts of Kerry to Ballyroe Heights Hotel and I wish you all every success. I hope that our hospitality contributes to an evening of making connections and proves fruitful for your business building. It is a privilege to host this inaugural event and I wish you an enjoyable evening with old friendships renewed and new ones made.

Message from our MC’s Galway native Orlagh has certainly been blessed with the gift of the gab. Having MC’ed events for over twenty years I am honoured to be co -hosting with Brendan and particularly excited to seeing the finalists. Fashion and beauty are huge passions of mine so I’m really looking forward to seeing the winners of these categories. It takes a lot of work to put together a night like this and huge kudos goes to Connect Editor Mags, who has worked tirelessly to ensure that the night is a success. I always advocate the ethos of supporting Irish and it is for this reason that I always urge people to support local businesses. Orlagh is available for bookings by contacting her owinters@hotmail.com 4

Hello! Brendan Fuller here from Radio Kerry’s Afternoon Show to tell you a bit more about myself. I’m a Kerry man through and through, born and raised in Killarney. However, even though I’m from the kingdom I can barely kick a football out of my way and as a result I’m currently warming the bench for the Croke’s C team. I might not be much of an athlete but I make up for that by being able to talk the hind legs off a brand new chair! I can’t wait to MC the Kerry Women in Business Awards, it’s an exciting time for business owners as things are on the slight uptake and I’m looking forward to making some new friends in Tralee! If you’re there on the night, make sure to grab a selfie with me.

FAMILY VALUES L

ocated on the outskirts of Tralee, Co. Kerry and Fota Retail Park, Cork, Ballyseedy Home & Garden is more than just a Garden Centre. Passion, experience and an understanding of exclusive living have earned this family-run business a reputation for quality, experience and innovation. The stores now incorporate a restaurant, homewares departments & clothing to name a few. We met up with the owners of the business to get an insight on how it all began and what lies ahead for the future of Ballyseedy.

Nathan when did you really start to get involved in the business. From a young age, was it something you always wanted to be part of? We always helped out as children after school and at weekends but I suppose it was really from 2005 when I returned from Australia that I took a real interest in the business. The economy was booming and I saw huge potential to grow and develop. We made a decision to expand our current offering from a traditional garden centre operation into a lifestyle

destination centre that incorporated most of what you see at Ballyseedy today. In 2007, we opened the glass atrium that gave us huge scope to extend into food, gifts, clothing and homewares. We have partnered with a number of retailers and service providers since then and this has added value and interest to the business. Meadows & Byrne, Edinburgh Woollen Mills, Designer Landscapes, Steeltech Sheds, Blarney Woollen Mills & Bakestone are now all key licence & lease holders within our facilities in Kerry & Cork.

Bernie, tell us how Ballyseedy began? Ballyseedy was started by my uncle Dermot Kerins in the 1980’s when garden centre’s were almost unheard of. It was a traditional style centre selling plants, compost, trees and all the things you would expect to find or need for your garden. I always had a passion for gardening so I began working in the centre with Dermot & absolutely fell in love with it. Shortly afterwards, I agreed to buy the business from my uncle which was then known as Fernhurst Nurseries. A bold move I am very proud of today considering I had five young children.

It is a real family affair here and even the staff seem like part of a big family. Do you feel this is of huge benefit to the business? Yes, all my sisters have worked in the business at some stage. Naomi now works with Glanbia but would have been very involved at the development stage for many years and had great input into the business at that time. Ruth & Salome were both a part of the business in the past and currently live in Australia. Abigail returned home from studying and working abroad and now manages the restaurant. Extended family members are involved in various roles such as sales, accounts and administration. Our team has grown rapidly over the past 18 months with 60 people now employed in Tralee & another 40 in Cork between concessions and the like. We are very close to all the team and realise that it is a collective effort that makes Ballyseedy what it is. Everyone has bought into our work ethos and there is great camaraderie between them. We’re

all friends and whilst we work hard and sometimes have the odd row, we all have the same goal at the end of the day: to make Ballyseedy one of the best garden and lifestyle centres in the country. You are now known as Ireland’s Premier Garden Centre with a store in Cork too and have won many awards. You must be very proud of this but I guess it took a lot of work to get to this level, would you like to tell us how that journey was? Last year, we were voted into the top 100 retail stores in the country by REI (Retail Excellence Ireland) and just missed out on the top 30. We are the only retailer in Kerry to achieve this so we were delighted. Our aim this year is to go one better and hopefully one day we can take the top award. Other awards include the Bord Bia 5 Star award & the restaurant has been nominated recently for Best Casual Dining by the Restaurant Association of Ireland. Most importantly, It is a nice acknowledgement for the team. Awards do not necessarily ensure

you have a solid business but they do give recognition to our team who all work extremely hard so I am glad for them more than anything. We opened our Cork store in 2011 in Fota Retail Park and whilst it was a slow burner initially, it has really taken off over the past 12 months. We’re delighted with how it has developed and it’s great to meet the same customers in both stores now. We get huge support from our neighbours in Cork so it was nice to be able to bring Ballyseedy to them. What’s next for Ballyseedy? As a family, we will continue to grow, develop and extend the business into what we hope will be one of the leading retail & food operators in the country. Our focus has shifted over the past three years from traditional garden retailing in line with European trends to a big emphasis now on developing our food and restaurants. Gardening will always be at the core of what and

little boys were screaming to go and visit ‘Bernie’s house’. They think Bernie has the coolest house ever with loads of people and other kids to play with! Hilarious, but hopefully they will be our future customers all the same. We’re at advanced stages of developing our new food hall which is very exciting and will bring a market type feel to the centre. Paralleled with developing Cork, the future is very bright indeed. who we are but we cannot ignore the considerable changes in the industry. We’ve invested heavily in our facilities and feel that people will always want a nice place to visit. By serving good quality food at affordable prices in a nice environment, we can counter the huge surge in online buying. My own opinion is that you cannot stay at home

all day on your laptop, pad or phone purchasing products. People will always want somewhere to visit and if we make Ballyseedy into a quality place to visit with interesting lines that are on trend for our customers we will continue to grow. We’ve become a real family place to visit and that’s exciting for us. I was recently told by a customer that her

A MESSAGE FROM OUR AWARD SPONSORS .ie Kellihers Toyota are delighted and proud to come on board as a sponsor of the Kerry Business Awards. You may ask what is the particular significance for Kellihers in becoming involved in such a fabulous event? To answer that question we’ll have to go back a bit – to 1936 in fact, the year Kellihers Garage was founded. Anyone with some knowledge of Tralee back then will tell you, it was my Grandmother, Alice, who performed the CEO duties with great success and aplomb too, she was the brains behind the operation ,as they say, with my Grandfather ,Tim ,spending most of his time repairing anything with a motor. It didn’t have to have wheels –we sold and repaired everything from boats to tractors to sewing machines oh and the odd car too. Denny St was HQ back then but we’ve moved on since to our current peripheral site in Rathass incorporating a Toyota retail franchise , CVRT van test centre, service department and repair workshop suitable for all makes and models. It is, and was even in the downturn ,our steadfast policy to support local events and hats off to Mags for highlighting and rewarding the increasingly significant contribution women make in all aspects of business and Kellihers wish both her and all the contributors, winners or not continued success in the future .

IRISH TV is delighted once again to sponsor the hospitality award as part of the Connect Women in Business awards. We thrive on telling the stories of ordinary people doing extraordinary things and that is very evident through the many wonderful business people in the County of Kerry. With our Munster offices based in Kerry we are proud to support local initiatives and congratulate Connect on hosting these awards again. IRISH TV has been viewed in over 140 countries across the world. We are Ireland’s first international TV channel and our motto is to broadcast local stories to a global audience. As long as there are stories to tell from Irish communities, there will be people at home and abroad who want to hear them in a new and engaging way – on IRISH TV. IRISH TV can be viewed across Ireland, the UK and Europe on the SKY channel 191, Freesat 400, Saorview, eVision channel 191, free to air boxes and online at www. irishtv.ie and www.irishtv.com Looking forward to seeing everyone on the night and keep an eye out for the IRISH TV cameras! Best wishes to all nominees from Brian & Jacqui Hurley and all the IRISH TV Team.

In 1952. Tom O’ Sullivan and this family started a much loved tradition, creating fresh bread and barm bracks for the local area. Passed down through generations of O’ Sullivan bakers, our love for bread and bracks has continued through to today. O’ Sullivans bread packed in the red wrapper and the Kerry brack are synonymous within Killorglin. The bakery has evolved over the years, in 2004 when a family member became intolerant to wheat the bakery looked for alternative grains. Spelt flour intrigued them and this is how the spelt range began, most recently the Spelt health fruit and seed soda bread. Since 2009 the bakery has rebranded, won awards for their Kerry brack range, entered new markets and developed new products. The bread industry has seen huge change– diet, health, functional foods, and convenience are huge factors that are impacting on the industry and Helen herself has been currently working on some Unislim Free to choose breads which she hopes will help secure the bakery’s future. Being the recipient of the Connect Kerry Women in Business Food Manufacturing Award in 2015 it will be my honour to sponsor and recognise Women in this category knowing the hard work and long hours required to maintain and build a successful Food business.

CREATING A DIGITAL MARKETING STRATEGY Digital is one of the largest growing platforms for Marketing, it is vital that it is included in your marketing plan. Planning for marketing is key and so I set out below the key stages to your digital marketing strategy.

1. Define your customer - With any marketing it is key to define your customer. You need to look at their needs and wants and also how you can target them. Begin by looking at simple things like their location, age range and specific interests they may have. 2. Define your objectives - Providing customers with a superb customer service in store is one thing but this must be mirrored online. Social media is SOCIAL so you have to show your personality while keeping to your brand. Set out objectives like: Increased exposure or increased engagement on your pages. 3. Design/Create Content - Create good engaging content try and use, ? and ! as these two symbols mean you are either asking a question or you are really excited or emphasising something. Video is huge in terms of content and can really build you as a leader in your business area. 4. Create a Messaging Calendar - With all your marketing you should sit down and think about what do I want to be promoting and when. Try to pick a few key items or images to promote at any time. This allows your customers to see

similar style items online and in print and will enhance your brand and not confuse your customers. 5. Define your Measurements - Simply put write down your Key Performance Indicators that you want to measure. Look back at your objectives, if you want to increase exposure of your brand then look at the number of followers that you have gained. 6. Execute your Plan - Consistency and execution are key to success in Social Media. A man can starve reading a cook book, ideas and actions are two different things. Have a question for me?
