This month we are delighted to catch up with Maeve McGrath, you would probably recognize Maeve from her role of Lorraine Molloy in Fair city, and most recently she starred in Brooklyn but Maeve is here today to tell us about her new role with Kerry Film Festival which happens later this month. Hi Maeve, congrats on your new role with Kerry film festival, a lot of our readers would recognize you from Fair City as well as other great productions; can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how you got the acting bug? Delighted to join the team here in Kerry. This was a festival that I have always admired so it is wonderful to be a cog in the wheel now! I was always on stage since I was very small. My dad was a theatre producer in the amateur theatre circuit and my Mum did the lighting so we were in theatre venues from a young age. It was actually in Siamsa Tíre when I came to see a show that I decided that I was going to be an actress. My parents didn’t blink an eye when I announced my new career path, at eleven years old, and so the seed was sown! I went to Trinity to study acting and I have spent the last 20 years on a stage or in front of a camera. Even though I wear different hats now, as producer and Artistic Director here at Kerry Film festival, I still love when an acting job comes in.

CONNECT KERRY September 2016
You are heading up the Kerry Film Festival this year; can you give us some insights as to what we can expect over the weekend of events? Kerry Film Festival is now in its 17th year and is going from strength to strength. This year we have an exciting programme of short films, two world premieres of Kerry films, three Irish film premieres and the start of our 1916 film commemoration. Kerry Film Festival is well known in national and international film communities and that is always seen in the submissions that come through. This year the Kerry made short films are very strong and I am delighted that we will open the festival with MAKING IT, a new Kerry feature film and the festival will close with another Kerry made feature film, shot in Killarney, BRACKENMORE. We have connected with the IFI to have an education screening of Oscar nominated film, MUSTANG and this film will appeal to the schools. We will have a screening of the Irish Film board shorts, AFTER 16 and we are delighted to screen Mise Éire during the festival along with a programme of 1916 influenced shorts. We are also introducing an industry event called SHORT FILM MARKET, which will have panel discussions, masterclasses and Q& A sessions. So, something for everyone this year at the festival.

Have you any advice for people out there thinking of testing out the world of film and acting? Go to the theatre, watch a lot of film. You don’t always have to be on stage to be learning. My greatest lessons have been from watching someone else. And read. READ. Read O’Casey and Synge. This is my mantra. Find your favorite playwrights and read all their work. I love Conor McPherson’s writing and Enda Walsh. Read actor biographies. Decide if this is a place you want to go. You will be poor if you take acting on as a career but it is very rewarding. I would do it all again in a heartbeat and look forward to my next chapter!
What’s next for Maeve? Well, the festival is kicking off in mid-October so that will keep me busy and after the festival we start to look ahead to 2017. I am looking forward to some time off in December for Christmas. I like to have my family around me at Christmas and chill out with my son and our rescue dog, Milo.
What do you do to relax? Anyone who knows me would probably tell you that I am always on the move! But I do like to chill out when I can! I love live music and can be found in Dolans in Limerick or Whelan’s in Dublin at a gig. I love to walk the dog in the mountains and I have a few favorite spots like the back beach in Castle Gregory.

Twelve couples have been selected and are currently in training for this momentous event under the experienced eye of Ms Laura Flaherty, Choreographer. The winning couple will be donating their prize money to a charity of their choice. My main interest is in Johnny O’Shea sport which includes basketball which I still play, and my chosen Married 54 years blessed with 4 wonderful Daughters and now 4 Granddaughters and 4 Grandsons. Our favourite past time is dancing and walking. My love of dancing started at age of 5. Johnny didn’t start dancing until we met in CYMS. The first year we had to go to the four corners of hall for Johnny to turn but eventually he mastered the knack of dancing. Dancing has been our source of Enjoyment, Socializing and Exercising providing us with 54 years of Health and Happiness. Every year we go to the Canaries, where we have made many friends with shared interest from all over the world... “Keeping fit has never been more enjoyable or rewarding in my life since I joined Nisus fitness. The variety of classes are best described as dynamic, motivating, flexible and addictive. Joe and his encouraging team of instructors constantly generate innovative exercises making workouts exciting and positively challenging. There is always a great atmosphere in the centre with everyone focusing on individual results while also offering motivational support to one another. MyZone belt enables members to track their workouts both within and outside the club. This belt is an excellent motivational tool during classes as it highlights my efforts to instructors who then offer personal encouragement to maximise performance. Nisus fitness really is on a different level to gyms or training centres I have attended in the past. I look forward to my diverse workouts on a daily basis and any exercise I do outside the club has become much easier due my training in Nisus fitness.”

HEALTH
Routine has arrived into our lives after the summer, kids are back at school, we are thinking about the long dark evenings ahead and snuggling up in front of log fires but the reality is we need to be thinking about our health during the winter too, we are all very active during the summer as the weather is better and we are out and about, going for walks and trips to the beach for a swim, its all so easy to say ‘The weather is too bad to go for a walk’ or ‘I don’t have time to go to the gym, ‘there is so much homework to do with the kids’ we have all said it, but the reality is we need to get ourselves in the right mind-set. We look after those around us but how many of us stop and think about ourselves? It is now widely known that Cardiovascular Disease is the biggest killer of women in Ireland, but 1in 5 women are not aware of this. What is the main cause of this? For most of us stress in our daily lives can have an adverse effect in our heart, brain and our body in general, so how do we lessen this happening in our daily lives? we should all stop for a moment and take a look at our typical day and try make some necessary changes, there is no point having a high powered job with a large income if we are not going to be around at 50 to enjoy life with our family, so while we all want to best of everything maybe it’s time to stop and think what is the best. Here are just a few things we need to review regularly. *Look at our daily routine and ask what we can change to make it more workable for all. *Examine our diet and what we eat each day, this is an exercise that can be done with all the family and we can have some fun doing it and trying out new recipes. *Time out time…. We need to structure our lives in a way that we make time for those around us but also time for ourselves; everyone needs a bit of me-time so when planning the day allocate a little. *Family time- always ensure that at least one day at the weekend is set aside for a little time together as a family, if it’s just a walk on the beach, its time spent together so do make the effort. 12

When you join Victory Fitness you are put on a journey. It can be an amazing journey where you find out so much about yourself. We believe these are the principles for success, you will 100% see results and enjoy them for the rest of your life if you follow these principles. It takes hard work and commitment just like anything else. We have a saying in Victory Fitness which is ‘do the hard things today for an easier tomorrow’ We will teach you the principles, give you the tools to help you achieve your goals. It all starts with you!
Setting up for success
Planning for success means you will be successful. You can take this into account in all areas of your life. Being practical, not procrastinating, or even just making a priority list. When it comes to eating well it means preparing lunches and dinners, being mindful when you go for lunch and dinner, getting portion sizes correct. This will in turn help the next generation see that bigger does not mean better.
Victory Fitness Nutrition – Susanna Kiely “Achieving your goals just got easier. I believe making small changes every day will result in the bigger changes happening without you even realising. I can help you break habits, give you knowledge and awareness around food choices and overall help you become the best you can be.”

Qigong Tai Chi
and Meditation
Habit of a
Lifetime
For the body, mind & soul
Pauline Russell tells us a little bit about the concept of this practice. Because the mind and body influence each other, its impossible to have a truly healthy body without a healthy mind and visa versa. That is why Qigong and Tai Chi are at the top of my list not just for healing but maintaining a well balanced and healthy way of life. Qi or chi means energy or life force, gong means work or benefits acquired through perseverance and practice. Health implies that the qi in our bodies is clear rather than polluted and turbid and flowing smoothly, like a stream not blocked or stagnant. Qigong and Tai Chi are a series of movements when coordinated with the breath and a focused mind , builds, clears and balances our qi or life force, yielding many benefits such as calming the emotions thus helping to quite the mind leading the body to a state where balance can be restored and natural healing can take place. These practices are for people of all ages and abilities, they can be practiced standing, seated or lying down. They are soft, gentle and flowing but build great physical and mental strength. Some of the benefits of a regular practice are, a strong immune system, decreased stress, anxiety and depression, improved mood, improved aerobic capacity, increased energy and stamina, improved flexibility, balance and agility. It enhances quality of sleep, lowers blood pressure and improves overall well being. I run classes throughout the year in blocks of 8 weeks at my studio Anam Su, in Killarney. I also offer one to one classes, workshops and Reiki treatments. My Autumn programme starts this month.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit” Aristotle When we decide to work towards a goal, be it weight loss, learning a new skill or improving our overall lifestyle, breaking negative habits can be a daunting process. So many people fail or regress back to old ways after a short period of time, but many others are successful in their efforts. So how do we make success a habit? Our lives are governed by a series of habits. Many of us get up at the same time each morning, eat the same breakfast, take the same route to work each morning and follow the same daily routine five out of the seven days in our week. This ritual has been formed due to weeks and months of doing the same thing each day; the habit has been formed. But what if the habit that we have is a negative one? And what steps can we take to work towards breaking a bad habit and forming a new, more positive one? Breaking bad habits can be one of the most difficult things to do, whether it is biting your nails or reaching for the biscuit tin for that late night cuppa before bed, but bad habits can be broken with a little work. When we decide to make the break the following tips can be helpful: The ‘Why’: If we begin to understand why we repeatedly participate in a negative behaviour or habit then we are more likely to be able to break the cycle. Thinking about when and why we reach for that chocolate bar may help us identify the reason we feel the need to include it in our diet and can also help us to find a healthier alternative behaviour to replace it with. Go for your Goals: When we are undertaking to improve our lives and remove bad habits we need to have a reason why we want to do it, we need to have a strong end goal. Every time you feel that you want to break back into the old habits look to your goals and how much you actually want to achieve them and use this as the motivation to keep going. Find an Alternative: When changing a behaviour that has been formed over a long period time, it is important that you have an alternative ‘go to’ activity to keep you occupied and on the straight and narrow. For example, if you decide to cut out the late night cup of tea but your body is used to having a warm drink late at night, it can be difficult to go ‘cold turkey’. Replacing the cup of tea with a cup of hot water and lemon will allow you the warm drink at night without the caffeine and the benefits of the added vitamin C from the lemon. Take a Break: No-one is perfect. We all have days where we fall off the wagon and that’s OK as long as we get back on again! Don’t beat yourself up if you slip up; stay positive, review your end goal and get back on the wagon. Self Talk: Tell yourself that you can do it! Trying to make positive change in our lives can be difficult so it is important to tell ourselves that we can do it. Stay positive and celebrate the small victories over your cravings.

After the summer break, families have returned to the school and work routine. Many are planning their healthy lifestyles for the months ahead as they start get fit classes or cookery classes. Your diet is an important part of a balanced healthy lifestyle. Remember that healthy foods and drinks may contain natural sugars. Fruits that contain acids, e.g. oranges, can be more erosive to tooth enamel when they are broken down in a smoothie. Mineral gels and fluoride toothpastes have an important part to play here in the protection of enamel from acid erosion. While people set goals for their general medical health, we should also remember our dental health. Every autumn the Irish Dental Association promote Mouth Cancer Awareness amongst the public. Many lives have been saved by this campaign in the last five years. Everyone should examine their mouth once a week. All you need is a mirror and good lighting. If you see any new lumps or nodules, ulcers, sores, patches with colour changes (that do not heal), you should get advice from your dentist. Examine your palate, tongue and floor of mouth. Remember, you might not have any pain or discomfort, so it is best to check the mouth regularly. Beir Bua agus Beannacht!

Last month, I looked at co-operative relationships versus competitive relationships. This month, I want to talk about expectations. Most of us go into relationships with a set of expectations. Sometimes, we are not even conscious of what those expectations are. For instance, we may fully expect that we will never be lonely again. We make assumptions that we will have children together and share the task of bringing them up. We presume that if we are married, we will spend all our spare time together. This can seem so obvious that we don’t even see the need to talk about it. However, some of the most serious problems in relationships come from failed or unmet expectations. Our expectations of relationships are formed by our experiences, mostly of our parents’ relationship. If you grew up in a family where everybody expressed their feelings, it can be very frustrating to be with somebody who doesn’t do that. If you grew up in a family where the woman did all of the housework, it might be difficult for you to find that you are now expected to pull your weight around the house. The key, as with so many things, is to talk about it beforehand. There are several categories in which we need to look at our expectations and those of our partners – money, children, sex, emotions, time, social – and really understand what we’re getting into. Is your money shared or does it remain the property of the person who earned it? How many children will you have, if any, and how will they be raised? Will you have sex every day? Every week? Any time, any place? Do the flowers and romance end? Look closely at what you expect from a relationship. It will help you to avoid a lot of problems.

Nutrition and Reproductive Health never ignore the basics
By Liadh Fitzgerald If researching terms such as “healthy pregnancy”, “fertility” or “IVF and Nutrition” you may have come across the ‘Fertility Diet’. This refers to a diet that selects certain foods that are rich in specific nutrients said to enhance reproductive function. This is a superb starting point for some couples, however for most of us there’s usually a bit more going on within our bodies that requires a more targeted fertility plan. Significant advances have occurred in the diagnosis and treatment of reproductive disorders over the past number of years but unfortunately one treatment a lot of women and couples omit is that of nutrition. Nutrition is more than the meat and two veg on your plate. Indeed the biological processes of the reproductive system are dependent on your nutritional status. That meat and two veg you’ve eaten metabolise into chemicals that influence the health of the female egg and sperm, fertilisation, the lining of the womb and implantation. A nutritionally dense diet will positively affect these factors whereas a nutritionally depleted one won’t. As it takes approximately 90 days to mature the sperm and egg advice is to seek nutritional intervention sooner rather than later – and ensure that intervention is targeted towards your needs.

As we quickly approach the winter months it is important that we ensure we are protected from the flu virus. Being vaccinated against the influenza virus is likely to provide effective protection against this year’s strain of the winter flu. The vaccine consists of the inactivated seasonal flu viruses expected to affect Ireland over the coming winter and offers up to 80% protection against infection. The service is available from the end of September. After vaccination it takes 10 - 21 days to be protected against flu. This vaccination is especially important for those in the community who are at an elevated risk of infection e.g. the elderly, healthcare workers, expectant mothers or for anyone with a chronic illness. This vaccination service is available in Sam McCauley Chemists Tralee, free of charge for all patients over 65 who hold a medical card or doctor visit card. Furthermore the vast majority of medical card holders over 18 years of age are also entitled to receive the winter flu vaccine and consultation free of charge. The service is also available for all private patients over 18 years of age without a prescription. If you would like further information with regards to the vaccination, please feel free to contact me in Sam McCauley Chemists Tralee. The aim is to develop and promote the various massage techniques which are practiced by experienced Massage Therapists worldwide. The competition will be held June 2017 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Alexandra will be performing Fertility Massage. The massage is a deep; yet gentle, non-invasive therapy that works by bringing the organs within the abdominal area back into alignment, releasing pressure and strengthening the surrounding muscles and ligaments. This in turn will improve blood, nerve and lymph flow. Toxins are flushed and nutrients that help to tone tissue and balance hormones, are restored to normal order. The massage also focuses on breaking down scar tissue, helping to loosen harden debris encouraging a natural movement and clearing both physical and emotional congestion. At the World Championship, focus is on examination, techniques, ergonomics and overall performance in each category – judged by specialists. Wishing Alexandra all the best!

Tips for Healthy snacking!
ooking
Snacking is a problem for a lot of us; I can be tempted by a pack of Taytos late at night after finishing the classes at the cookery school, but in the last few months I have managed to avoid this by having some healthy snacks in the fridge that are tasty and healthy. The problem with sugary snacks is the sugar rush kicks in and then a short time later you get that mid-morning or afternoon slump. Below is my list of smart snacks that will keep you going between meal times and that are packed full of flavour and a lot healthier than the bag of crisps or chocolate bar. Smoothies

Growing Pains with
Health | Connect
ARE YOU HAVing tROUblE witH YOUR hearing
Growing pains can be a very difficult experience for both parents and children. It is estimated that up to 40% of children experience growing pains which can be excruciating and incapacitating. A little like teething, growing pains are often seen as inevitable and something that must simply be endured.
Causes
Growing pains are most commonly attributed to periods of sudden growth, where the long bones in particular stretch at a great length in a short amount of time. It is not however, in the bones that the pains originate but in the soft tissues. The reason being is as the bones grow longer and quickly the muscles, tendons and ligaments are stretched at a painful rate. For this reason pain is almost always experienced in both legs and usually in the thighs and calves. Another theory is that pains may be caused by all the running, jumping and training that many children participate in multiple sports at the same time which may explain why pains are most often experienced later in the day or during the night but, better in the morning.
Physiotherapy
if you answer YES to any of these questions then you should have your hearing tested; is the tV turned up louder than normal? Are you finding it difficult to hear in group situations?
Assessment by a Chartered Physiotherapist will assist establishing the root cause of the problem and identify effective strategies to assist alleviating symptoms. Manual therapy can assist problematic muscles and make it easier to stretch them out. As every child has different physical abilities and limitations the Chartered Physiotherapist will determine which muscles are most problematic and which stretches will be most effective at reducing pain. General exercises could exercise the wrong muscles or exercise them in the incorrect way which would not only be a waste of time but, could make them worse.
Do you suffer from tinnitUS?
Growing pains typically occur periodically over several months but, can last for over a year. They can be quite frequent with some children experiencing pain almost every night so identifying the root cause and following the correct programme can save parents and children from long drawn out period of pain, not only ensuring your children are comfortable but also, that they stay active, happy and you all get a good nights sleep.

Thinking Out Loud
Hi everyone,
How can a weight-loss show possibly be a bad thing?
By Marisa Reidy
I READ with interest the other week how RTE presenter Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh has serious issues with the station’s hit weight-loss and fitness show, Operation Transformation – criticising the programme’s format for ‘fat shaming’ its contestants.
As peculiar as I thought it was for the red-haired presenter to have any sort of pop at her employer, I found her comments quite surprising – absurd even. Bláthnaid took particular issue with how the contestants have to strip down to skin-tight leggings and - in the case of the ladies - vest tops, for their weekly weigh-in, describing the weekly routine as ‘fat shaming. In her interview with the Irish Independent, she said ‘there is no need to fat shame people’ and said that it’s because of this view that she has never watched the programme. While acknowledging that programmes like Operation Transformation ‘do their fitness too’ she suggested that the programme makers’ primary interest was in ratings and ‘creating entertainment.’ What an extraordinary thing to say! Call me naive, but my idea of fat shaming is something entirely different and while of course RTE is looking for high ratings, there is huge merit to producing programmes such as Operation Transformation. Fat shaming, as far as I understand it, means intentionally and recklessly ridiculing a person because of their weight, causing them untold upset. For example, it’s going on line or on the airwaves and slamming an overweight person with absolutely no regard for their feelings. Operation Transformation, let’s not forget, highlights the weight and fitness struggles of five WILLING participants, all of whom have signed up to tell their story all fully aware of what the weekly weigh-ins will entail. These fully consenting adults have clearly accepted that their weight is an issue and have decided to make a positive change by enlisting the help of the show’s experts. I doubt any of the current or previous contestants, if asked, would feel they were being fat-shamed. As far as I see it, the country is nearing an obesity epidemic, which we all know doesn’t bode well for the next generation. Any programme that can showcase the dangers of being overweight and living an unhealthy lifestyle through real life stories need to be embraced and welcomed, not criticised. If one person is frightened into change by watching shows like Operation Transformation, then it’s one life saved. And I’m sure there’s more than one person making a change right now as the current season continues. How can that possibly be a bad thing? 24

It is really hard to believe already the focus is turning to Christmas. Recently some of our customers suggested we should start a CHRISTMAS CLUB. I think this is an excellent idea, with money so tight for everybody this planning ahead takes a lot of pressure off people when it comes to selecting gifts for family and friends - so we have decided to go ahead with this. All you need to do is pay whatever amount you wish from now until December 18th, and select some really nice gifts, you might even decide to give some away and not keep them all for yourself, being in the spirit of Christmas like. There is also the option of putting a deposit on something, handbags in particular are worth booking, paying a deposit and putting it aside, you can pay it off on a regular basis or when you collect.
Now that the Christmas club has been discussed, let me rave about the range of hats and scarves we have in stock at the moment. If I got a Euro every time I heard someone say “Ah Carmel hats don’t suit me” I could retire and live of my earnings, so I am telling you all now we have a hat to suit every shaped head, and every hairstyle. I will sign off and just remind you all again if any advice is needed on any outfit be it special occasion or casual outing please call in or contact me on our Facebook page. In the meantime if anyone is looking for me I will be on Google searching for the name of the saint that one prays to for cold weather...
Until next time - keep smiling, Carmel xxx

We will soon be turning back the clocks and the evenings are already getting darker and at this stage we’ve all probably added a layer or two of clothing so I’d like to discuss casual winter dressing. Gone are the days that the only way to keep warm meant scratchy itchy jumpers this season casual dressing is all about being both cosy and stylish.Any of you readers who have a degree in deciphering knitting patterns have all my admiration(my attempts are a story for another day) and must be delighted at the beautiful wools available.Thankfully jumpers available to buy this year are just as luxurious and very price friendly.Polyester and acrylic are being used to create cashmere, mohair and soft bouble effect jumpers that still feel fabulous and are lightweight yet warm. All usually contain a low % of either spandex or elasten to help retain shape.Spend a bit of time and effort in choosing your knitwear as it will be a hard working item in your wardrobe. Another hardworking item in anyones wardrobe has to be tops and this year there is a lot happening with them. Firstly there is the two in one sleeve look, where a shorter sleeved top is attached to a longer sleeved top, these may be different materials with the heavier material underneath and are both stylish and practical.Tops that have two mixed fabrics such as a light cashmere effect wool with a chiffon blouse attachment or collar are a simple easy way to keep warm and cosy. Finally this season tops are featuring lots of little luxurious touches such as a leatherette trim on the neck or a glitzy panel on the side all adding a sophisticated edge to a casual look.I can not talk about casual yet stylish dressing without talking about the outer layers and this year you really are spoilt for choice. There are beautiful soft to the touch wool capes, coatagans and wraps and which you choose to buy depends on your lifestyle and needs.Suede is huge this season and has a less stiff more casual feel but is still available in practical lined beautifully tailored jackets. Keep it casual yet dressy with a nice long sleeved cotton top underneath or a simple white shirt. The teddy bear faux fur is also going nowhere this season and is a fun way to add warmth and colour to your winter wardrobe. There is such an array of trousers out there that it really is up to you to pick your personal favourite from jeggings to a more relaxed fit or even jeans but all of these will work fantastically with any of your knitwear, tops and jackets. Just remember this season is all about keeping warm while staying stylish -

Our fashion columnist Orla Diffily had eyelash extensions applied in Transformations Beauty Salon & Day Spa in Tralee and was wowed by the result. Read her review below.
Top tips for applying mascara correctly
•Start at the base of lashes and wiggle brush up to the tip of lashes. •Repeat to build. •To apply to lower lashes, hold wand vertically. •Do not pump brush in container-this ads air that can dry out the mascara. •To prevent clumping, let mascara dry between coats. •Remove with your favorite eye makeup remover.
Oksana Sotskova I had Russian Volume Eyelash Extensions in Transformations Beauty Salon & Day Spa, on High Street in Tralee. It was my first time having these lash extensions, and I am absolutely delighted with the result. They look and feel so light and natural, yet open up my eyes and add glamour without having to apply any make up! After a consultation with owner and beauty therapist, Oksana Sotskova, I opted for lashes that would thicken and define my own lashes (as opposed to very long lashes). Oksana is very experienced in applying lashes and is a complete perfectionist. She can advise you on what best flatters and enhances your own eye shape and there is an extensive variety of lengths available.
RIMMEL Volume Colorist Mascara Reveal darker lashes with and without mascara! • Darkens bare lashes in two weeks* • Tapered, lash-intensifying brush wraps every lash with blacker than black pigments No more invisible naked lashes - even in those unplanned moments! This revolutionary new mascara reveals more lashes... even when you’re NOT wearing it! A lash tint complex with natural colorants gradually tints your bare lashes over time. And, in an instant, the volumising formula loads lashes with jet-black impact. GRANDIÔSE METAMORPHOSE! Lancôme goes further in lash transformation, offering an extreme version of its iconic mascara:
Before and After The procedure takes 2 hours as each lash is carefully and individually applied, and is completely relaxing (I almost fell asleep). After application you cannot take a shower/bath or let water near your lashes for 24 hours. You must also use an oil free cleanser. Lashes then just need to be lightly brushed through daily (Oksana supplies you the brush) and you are good to go !
Benefits
At the time of writing, I have had them a week, and they are as good as the day they were applied. They really open up your eyes to give you a more refreshed appearance and lift your complexion. Everyone said once I got them I would be hooked and they were right !
CLINIQUE HIGH IMPACT WATERPROOF Instant volume and length that resists flaking, clumping, and smudging.
Transformations Beauty Salon & Day Spa also offer a wide range of other treatments including holistic body treatments, reflexology, facial, nail care, tan, threading and waxing. Fall in love with Autumn Style
Style | Connect
Tips from our Connect fashion columnist Orla Diffily
Welcome to my first monthly fashion column for Connect Magazine, featuring just a small selection of some of the fabulous looks for the season from our own Kerry boutiques, designers and high street. This month, the focus is on new looks for Autumn.
Look classic & chic in this teal coat by Malene Birger from MacBees Killarney. €610
Glamorous jumpsuits are one solution dressing. Dress to impress this season in this flattering jumpsuit from Jasmine Tralee. €195.
As we live in a mild climate, it’s good to invest in some trans-seasonal pieces which you can wear from this Autumn until early next Spring. I recommend shopping early to ensure you get your size and colour, as popular looks sell out fast.
Stylish and affordable - use colour and print to brighten your look like this top from Paco in Killarney & Tralee & www.paco.ie
Dazzle in this metallic two piece from Hannons of Castleisland. Jacket €225, Trousers €155
The 1970’s Think ABBA. Bright colours, flares, fringes and blue eyeliner!
sweater and flat, laced ankle boots, and for an evening look, swap for a diamante tee shirt with ballet pumps.
Tulle Hello Carrie Bradshaw! For everyday glamour, pair your tulle skirt with an aran
Metallic This trend is everywhere, from bomber jackets to tee shirts to three piece suits and shoes. Best paired with block primary colours (such as white, grey, red, black) to avoid looking like a lost spaceman.
Key Trends
Sports Luxe Hoodies with heels - yes seriously. The Sports Luxe trend is both functional and comfortable as well as funky and fashionable. Military A fashion forward statement - military is the ultimate in power dressing. It can be sophisticated when tailored with fitted army jackets or dresses worn with wide belts, or more grungy with army jackets worn with big knits and combat trousers. Military also looks great with leather and lace, for example wear a military jacket with a feminine lace blouse and leather skirt or pants. Just don’t over do it ! Layer your knitwear for maximum impact. This chic look is from Benetton in Tralee. Wool Colour block coat : €179. Scarf : €35.95, Dress : €69.95
Lastly, remember, don’t be a slave to fashion. What you wear, should express who you are, and be appropriate to your lifestyle, the climate and your budget. So work these trends into your own personal style, be brave and have fun and most importantly support your local fashion stores, designers and boutiques.

ConneCt BUSINESS Kerry Hairdresser comes 4th in the OMC European Championships!
Renowned Irish celebrity hairdresser Cathriona Rohan has been recognised internationally as her and her team have nabbed 4th place is the prestigious OMC European Hairdressing Championships. The awards, which are supported by the Irish Hairdressers Federation, were held in Paris recently and despite the awards being named ‘European Championships’ the team had to fight off tough competition from the top hairdressers from over 54 countries around the world including the cream of the crop in the USA.Cathriona and her team, which is made up of herself and team captain John Coss, competed on both an individual and team basis. The pair, with their background team and supporters who travelled over to Paris with them, celebrated the phenomenal win and cheered proudly as they waved the Irish flag while collecting their medals late Monday night.
The lifestyleBmagazine Kerry usiness | for ConneCt
Speaking about the win Cathriona stated “I cannot believe it, I am so thrilled and literally on cloud nine. To get 4th place is a dream come true and something I never even imagined, especially as we were a team of two competing against full teams of three. I would like to thank everyone who came and supported us in particular our trainer Mike Hoffman, our team manager Maeve Healy Harte and my amazing model Kerry O’Connor who looked fantastic and no doubt helped us clinch the place. I would also like to give special thanks to Julie Clement, Cliona Sweeney and Rebecca Wall who helped put the winning looks together. Now our attention is towards the OMC World Cup in 2017 when we will compete with an extra pep in our step and increased confidence to go all the way and win.” This win will no doubt catapult Cathriona and her salons Cathrionas Hair Salon in both Tralee and Castlegregory to new heights. Cathriona and her award winning team have a never ending celebrity client list Miriam O’Callaghan, Storm Keating & Celia Holman Lee.

World Suicide Prevention Day was on September 10th 2016, its purpose is to raise awareness around the globe that suicide can be prevented. Suicide is regarded as a significant threat to public health & from 2000 to 2013, the national average of suicides was 11.8 per 100,000. Many people spend a large proportion of their time in work so the workplace is a very relevant setting for promoting the mental health of the adult population in Ireland. Staff & Management in organisations who are likely to come in contact with persons in distress could be crucial in preventing suicidal behaviour. A holistic approach to promoting health and wellbeing among staff is an important suicide prevention measure in the workplace setting. Mental health promotion in the workplace is applicable to many aspects of employment including: •Health and safety •Employee assistance •Equal opportunities •Work/life balance •Bullying and harassment •Terms and conditions of •Workplace Wellbeing employment •Performance management In addition to this workplaces can become a positive and supportive environment for rehabilitation and in so doing contribute to the reduction of the stigma of mental illness.

Filing Income Tax Returns
As the Budget nears we remain optimistic of tax cuts which may increase our incomes for once. The looming income tax deadline of the 31st October however, usually causes cold sweats and panic. New Business/ Start Ups
For new businesses realising that brilliant filing system they envisioned never materialised, is a cause of concern. Relax, most information is now 02/06/2016 2 downloaded at some point so it is just a matter of putting it together. Find/ download bank statements, cheque stub and lodgements and you’re nearly there. Find any invoices and statements lying around and drop everything to your Accountant, who should be able to sort out the rest.
Filing Your Own Return
Although we don’t recommend this, it is possible to file your own return. There are online guides on ROS and You Tube which can assist. When filing your own return, consult with others who have experience.
Choosing Your First Accountant
The easiest way to file income tax returns is using an Accountant. Things to consider when initially choosing an Accountant should include: • Qualifications • Experience • Price – Don’t be afraid to ask NB: It is extremely important that you trust and can talk to your Accountant.
Financial Difficulty - CAVA
The Institute of Chartered Accountants offer a free consultation service called CAVA which is run via the Citizens Advice office in Tralee. This is a Free service for businesses, which can help those who can’t afford the services of an accountant but need assistance. John Canty & Co.
