EDITOR NOTE It’s July and the kids are on holiday so here’s hoping for a few weeks of dry weather and maybe a little sunshine thrown in. We are delighted to bring you all the winners and updates from our Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards held recently.

What a wonderful night was had by everyone, lots of connections made, old friendships renewed and new ones carved out, a really good and positive night for all who were there. Congratulations to the overall winners and continued success to them and indeed to all the finalists who were all winners just to be part of it. Business is good in the county and it was evident in the room on the night. June was also a very important month in the lives of two very good friends of Connect... Don O Neill and Pascal Guillermie, they choose to come home to Kerry for their wedding so had a chat with them on life and what family means to them.

Mark gives us top tips on the perfect bbq, while Listowel Chef Lizzy Lyons is giving us a recipe for something sweet... we get some advice from the motor trade on upgrading the car during the 2nd half of the year, so for those of you looking for a 162 reg it’s worth a read.

Bridget at Kellihers Toyota joins us with some advice on getting finance for the new wheels, so it’s worth reading that.

We are also looking at taking a break close to home and have some lovely places we think you should check out.

School is out and this usually means lots of stressed out parents planning childcare for the next two months. Just remember, if you can at all make a little time for them, it can be difficult to do this but they need sometime too, work will still be there, kids grow up, and they usually grow up way too fast, so make some lasting memories over the next few weeks that will last forever.

Enterprise Ireland has just launched the International Business Women’s Conference to be held in conjunction with the Rose of Tralee international Festival on Monday August 22nd in the Brandon Hotel, Tralee. In its second year, the event gathers leaders from across the business and entrepreneurial spectrum to celebrate the business achievements and success stories of women today.

This year’s conference theme is ‘The Changing Face of Success’ focussing on strong female role models leading by example and empowering women to fulfill their ambitions.

Senior female figures such as Eleanor McEvoy and Norah Casey from Dragons’ Den will share their experiences and insights on themes such as leadership, linking the digital age and entrepreneurship. Conference delegates will also hear from the Rose of Tralee, Elysha Brennan, as well as previous Roses including 2005 Rose of Tralee, Dr. Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin.

Speaking at the launch, Enterprise Ireland CEO, Julie Sinnamon said: “Enterprise Ireland recognises the huge contribution of Irish women in business. Last year we invested in a record number of female-led start-up companies. The International Business Women’s Conference aims to inform and inspire women to embrace business opportunities, leverage the Irish global network and reach their full potential.”.”

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry What obstacles do you see as a major problem when starting out in business?

Getting money from the banks is a massive problem. The cost of insurance for our industry is especially high and getting your name out there and having the brand recognised without a budget and is very hard work. Always remember there is no such thing as a 35 hours week when you are self-employed. When I started the business I worked every day of the week for 4 years. Some of the time I had to survive without any income for myself. It is a fact of business that you are the last to be paid after looking after the bills, staff wages and the revenue.

BREEDA IS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT RECIPIENT After all the fuss and excitement of the Connect Awards we chat to Breeda Hurley recipient of Connect Kerry Lifetime Achievement Award , one that is not given out lightly, it’s an award to recognise the achievements of one lady who like many others in attendance has worked hard to build her business, Her business is a tough industry and she relies heavily on her staff to deliver standards that her clients will accept and want to repeat business with, but she seems to have created and bottled the formula for success and she has already won national awards to prove this. She’s an excellent mentor, leader and role model, she employed even

more during the recessionary times and she deals with small medium and large businesses, she is involved in the business at every level personally and has grown her business through the most powerful tool... word of mouth, she now has branding everywhere, She has excellent staff recruitment and staff retention and professionalism is the core of her business, She is a lady to the back bone, and has never forgotten her roots, her family and friends are her number one priority in her life. She is celebrating 21years in business this year and we are looking forward to bringing you exclusive first excerpts from her eagerly awaited book which she is working on at present.

Breeda tell us a little bit about how you began in business I started ABC Cleaning Services and supplies in 1995 having spent 5 years in London. I saw a niche in the market for a cleaning service here as the building boom was just beginning. Ned O Shea builders gave me the first job and we eventually worked for all the main building contractors in Tralee. The business expanded gradually and I was eventually able to create employment and start hiring more people.

Your mum to a big family too, have you any advice for our readers on juggling it all successfully. You are a large employer now do you find the recruitment process difficult and what do you look for in staff?

I have 8 children 6 boys and 2 girls.

Of course being self-employed and raising a family is nearly impossible.

At the start my husband and I would share the responsibility, if one of us was working the other would stay at home.

Throughout the history of ABC Cleaning each of our 8 children worked with us as we developed the family business. It is a tough juggling act and you are always conscious of the fact mixing family life with work life is a constant battle. The guilt is enormous but for me there was no choice as all we wanted is some financial stability and a better future for our children. The kids learned some valuable life lessons by being part of a tough industry as they developed a strong work ethic and acknowledging that some of the world’s hardest workers are cleaners.

My daughter Mairead is still part of the business and has the best work ethic I have ever seen.

We employ 115 people mainly on a part-time capacity. It is difficult to get staff because of the work we do and the unsociable hours, early mornings and late evenings. The contract cleaning industry as a whole tends to have a high

volume of staff turnover. We are pretty lucky as some of my employees are with me for nearly 2 decades. Without good employees you will not survive, you cannot be everywhere and they represent you and your business every day. It takes time to develop a team of people and yes there have been times where I have had to make the toughest decisions, but it is never personal, its business and that’s always a challenge.

What does it mean to you to be our lifetime achievement award recipient?

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect to win this prestigious lifetime award.

I am honoured and humbled to receive this accolade. It makes all the long hours sweat and tears worthwhile. It is the pinnacle of my career.

You have won other awards can you tell us about those?

In 2014 we won two awards, one for best cleaned premises by a small company in

Being honest I don’t get a lot of time to relax. A nice meal and a glass of wine with my family or friends are always nice.

I am currently writing a book, it is going on a good few years at this stage. No better time to put the finishing touches to it now. I have a lot of it written, it is all about my business ventures, the ups and downs, trials and tribulations. I am enjoying doing this at the moment and winning the award has incentivised me to complete it and have it on the book shelves of all good bookstores by February 2017.

I am still on cloud nine after winning the Connect Magazine Readers Choice award.

I had no idea I was being considered for the honour. I must be the luckiest person working as I love what I do. I think I am a good example of the old saying, A woman who finds a job she loves, will never work a day in her life again.

In That’s perfect we always try to meet the needs of the customer If they leave the shop smiling, we know we have gone a long way to achieving that. I am aware that dealing with the customers can be tough at times, but we never know what’s going on in another person’s life. In our business, it is usually for happy occasions that people are buying and yes, including weddings! but we also come across the occasion where there has been a recent bereavement and we always try to take a little of the sting and pain out of this.

I suppose what I am trying to say is, we try our best and put our customer first.

I am humbled by the honour you have given me and hope to live up to it.

Another day and evening out that gives us the chance to dress in our finest are the races and I’d like to give you a few tips on dressing for the races.

The first rule for going racing is to dress comfortably, whether you are going simply for a day out with the girls or hoping to enter the winners circle (best dressed finalists and not the horse owners), if you are dressed comfortably then confidence will ooze from you and enhance any outfit!

Plan your outfit well in advance and don’t be afraid to plan your outfit around your hat or headpiece or shoes instead of the other way around. Dressing for the races is a great opportunity to express your individuality and sense of style and I’m delighted to see that there is a more varied selection of awards being given for things such as best accessories and most classic dresser nowadays.

Accessories can make or break any outfit and I would generally advise to keep them plain and simple if there is a lot going on with your outfit and to make the statement pieces if your outfit is plain and classic. Do not forget to make sure you are able to walk long distances in your shoes as you will be on your feet for a lot of the day, even slip a pair of pumps into your bag and save the heels for when you arrive at the course.

Once you have your outfit planned start to think about the essential basics such as your foundation underwear. A shawl or scarf and maybe even an umbrella may be both stylish and useful as we all know we can get all the elements in one summer day.

CONNECT Cooking TIPS FOR A TASTY BARBECUE

We often use the weather as an excuse not to barbecue that often in Ireland. The barbecue is seen as a way to entertain only when the sun is shining. I barbecue all year round and even cooked my Christmas turkey and potatoes on the barbecue last year!

My top tips for barbecuing will ensure you will be the king of the grill and without a burnt sausage or black chicken leg in sight.

My recipe for grilled pineapple is an ideal end to your barbecue.

CONTROL THE HEAT!

WITH HONEY AND LIME YOGURT Serves 8

GRILLED PINEAPPLE

Don’t fill your barbecue to the brim with charcoal, this will be too hot to cook on, especially items that take longer to cook, such as chicken legs.

For items that take longer than 20 minutes to cook, use indirect cooking.

This means the food isn’t placed directly over the heat source. So move the charcoal to the side of the barbecue or turn of one of the gas burners and place the food to the side of the direct heat.

For the pineapple

8 slices fresh pineapple, each about 1/2 inch thick, peeled and cored 2tablespoons soft brown sugar 1/4teaspoon ground cinnamon For the yogurt

USE THE LID

Cooking with the lid down on the barbecue gives you better tasting food on gas or charcoal. This will capture the smoke and give you a much better flavour. It also means your food will cook quicker and be moist. It will also prevent the flare up of flames that burn the food. If you are looking it isn’t cooking.

BRUSH THE FOOD

WITH OIL NOT THE GRILL Discard the forks!

Get rid of the forks that come with barbecue tool sets. Piercing the meat when turning will mean the juices drip from the food, causing flames and drying out the food.

Don’t forget the dessert.

150g low fat natural yogurt 2 limes, finely zested

1 tbsp honey 1. Mix the yogurt, lime zest and honey together in a bowl.

2. Sprinkle the pineapple slices evenly on both sides with the brown sugar and cinnamon 3. Brush the cooking grates clean. Grill the pineapple slices over medium heat, for 3-4 minutes on each side.

4. Serve with the yogurt.

A SWEET TREAT FOR SUMMER Baked Lemon Cheesecake with Homemade Lemon Curd, Sour Cream, Fresh Raspberry and Mint

Baked Lemon Cheesecake Ingredients: 250g mascarpone cheese 600g soft cheese Zest 3 lemons plus juice of one 2 eggs plus 2 yolks 175g caster sugar

Heat oven to 180c/gas mark 6. Line a 23cm spring form tin with parchment paper.

Whisk all ingredients in a bowl. Pour into the prepared tin.

Bake in the oven for 35/40 minutes till you get a nice even wobble.

Leave in the oven until completely cooled.

When cooled remove the oven and portion out slices without cutting through.

Homemade Lemon Curd Ingredients: 4 lemons 115g butter (unsalted) 225g caster sugar 3 beaten eggs

Zest the rind from the lemon avoiding the white pith.

Squeeze and strain the juice from the lemons.

Using a heatproof bowl over simmering water, melt the butter and add the sugar, lemon juice, zest and beaten eggs.

Stir continuously until the mixture thickens.

When the mixture coats the back of a spoon, it is ready.

Leave to cool.

To Serve: Sour Cream Raspberries Mint

Option 1: 1.

In the middle of each slice lace a nice green leaf of mint and top with fresh raspberry.

Serve with a spoon of the lemon curd and sour cream on the side and a sprinkle of icing sugar on top.

Option 2: 1.

Spread the lemon curd evenly on top and decorate with a cluster of raspberries in the middle and a sprig of mint.

CONNECT Motoring Our 162 Suggestions Its July and it’s the beginning of the 162 registration, and motor dealers all over the county are preparing their best offers to tempt you to new wheels, we in connect take a look at what’s on offer around the county and why you should upgrade. The motor industry tells us that there is an upturn and the sales are increasing so that’s good news for the economy but we do advise to do your research, investing in a car is something that we take seriously, we need to be sure we choose one suitable for our needs, and depending on our personal circumstances are we buying a car that will adapt to changing family requirements? We need to consider all these things before making the decision.

We had a look at some options out there FORD – Known to be the reliable family car ford have introduced some very nice fancy extras to their models this year and we look forward to seeing the Ka+ which will be unveiled in September. The Kuga

is also getting a revamp, and we also hear that the Focus is coming in an Electric model so looking forward to that.

TOYOTA- Class style affordable quality is what Toyota tells us and I think personally the RAV4 ticks all those boxes. But we hear the new C-HR is on the way to be just below the Rav in this range, rivalling some of the others smaller options definitely one to watch. Again the electric version of Prius is due to us soon.

OPEL- two new models on the way from this great car brand the Meriva mini looks interesting and the new INSIGNIA is coming in larger and with more space so an ideal big car choice, we also hear the MOKKA X is getting a bit of alteration, with an extensive list of technical features.

SUZUKI- they have already introduced the new BALENO, its 1litre engine will make it the Suzuki

supermini. Strong reliable fleet definitely worth looking at.

PEUGEOT- This is going to be a busy year for Peugeot as they have already introduced range of new vehicles, and upgrades to their recent fleet. The new 3008 looks amazing. And although it won’t be here until later in the year, its one to watch for the 171 reg.

So there you have it, just a few choices we tested the list is endless so whatever you are looking for there is a car to suit you, just remember support local and buy from a reliable dealer and you won’t go wrong.

16th Annual Tour de Munster Charity Cycle

in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland launched at Lismore Castle Gardens The four day charity cycle, which was launched by cycling legend Sean Kelly, which has become tradition, takes place from Thursday 4th to Sunday 7th August, and will see over 100 amateur cyclists cycle over 600km around the six counties of Munster, raising funds for the Munster branches of DSI. This is the 7th successive year that the national charity has been the beneficiary of the popular cycle, and the official launch event was attended by over 220 invited guests, including members from the various Munster branches of DSI and families supported by the charity, Tour sponsors and many of the cyclists taking part this year. Tour de Munster organiser Paul Sheridan established the popular cycle in 2001, which has had a life changing impact on the lives of countless people through its fundraising efforts; and since its inception, the cycle has raised over €2 million for its beneficiaries; and for DSI alone, it has raised almost €1.6 million. This year’s Tour de Munster begins on Thursday, August 4th in Waterford City and continues over four days around the six counties of Munster until it reaches Cork on Sunday, August 7th.

FROM NEW YORK TO BALLYHEIGUE FOR BIG DAY CELEBRATIONS Don O Neill a native of Ballyheigue but now firmly based in New York, designing creations for stars recently married the love of his life Pascal Guillermie.

They didn’t throw as some would have expected the massive celebrity wedding in the bright lights of New York, instead they choose to come home and pledge their lives to each other in the wonderful setting of Ballyheigue Castle, surrounded by family and friends. It was a wonderful day and we catch up with the happy couple to tell us where it all began and how it’s stood the test of time.

Tell us where it all began for you both, how you met?

Head down at the sewing machine, busy working on costumes for the baroque opera Phaeton, at my first paid job in the design world in Paris, and would be the beginning of our marvellous love story...

Day one buzzed with excitement as the 3 of us were introduced to the 50 choir members and the 12 dancers (4 men and 8 women) in the giant auditorium.

One particular dancer was very cute and intriguing, his hair pulled back in a tight chignon, he wore a pinstripe boxy cropped jacket over a see through black lace body suit, tucked in to enormous wide legged pinstriped pants. Pascal Guillermie was his name. The dancers from companies Karine Saporta had moved from their dance studio in Caen, Normandy to a small hotel near the theatre. They arrived in to the giant space and found the choir had taken over the bleachers so they stood in a group facing Karine Saporta, the choreographer, Marc Minkovski the musical director and the costume team. Pascal’s heart skipped a beat when he laid eyes on the very tall man behind Karine, dressed all in a black.

A Black turtle neck sweater, black tapered wool pants with a waist cinching super wide belt, a large quartz crystal dangling from a silver chain around his neck and brilliant flame red hair in an asymmetrical cut obscuring half of his face, Don O’Neill was smiling and nodding facing the crowd, trying to understand the stream of French conversation that was being

directed at the group welcoming them to their new temporary home. Little Pascal Guillermie standing with his best friend Nathalie and a few other friendly curious dancers made their way over to us afterwards, introduced themselves and began to check out their costumes.

I learned after, that one of the girls in

After that they seemed to spend a lot of time back stage with us, coming to visit and chat during all their breaks.

One day I had my modelling portfolio as I was going to a casting and as I was showing off my book, Pascal pointed to one small picture and said “I love that one”, I made a mental note and was delighted by his remark. I needed help.

On Friday, I asked my good friend Moira to come visit the Theatre to see where I worked and check out Pascal; maybe she could figure him out! She arrived to find him unfortunately suspended in his bungee rope where he sat for hours that day in rehersals, so she didn’t really get to check him out.

At 5.30 p.m. my day was over, though dance rehearsals always continued late in to the night. As Moira and I left, I stopped back stage where Nathalie who played the role of THEIA mother of Helios (whom Phaeton carried across the sky in his chariot every day) was high up on a 25 foot scaffolding dressed in a gold pleated cape, where she stood for hours visible to the audience thru a large circular opening in the back drop. I called up to her to wish her good night, when suddenly I blurted out “Does Pascal like Boys or Girls?” She laughed down at me “BOYS”!!

With that I took the little photo that Pascal liked out of my book and wrote on the back “Dear Pascal, have a good weekend, Don” and asked Nathalie to give it to him. Moira and I headed off in to the centre of Paris for dinner and by 10 p.m. that Friday night I was home tucked up in bed, and sound asleep. Meanwhile on stage, every time Pascal leaped high enough, Nathalie would whisper loudly “Don asked if you liked Boys!! Next bounce “He gave me something for you “... What did he give you ? ... Next bounce “A photo “ .... And on the conversation bounced! Pascal was finally released from the bungee cord at 10 pm when Nathalie excitedly handed him the photo!! Pascal was over the moon BUT, there was no telephone number! (Don wasn’t 26 and single in Paris for nothing ... not knowing to hand out my phone number was definitely helping me remain single). Frustrated but determined to seek me out, Pascal went to my sewing machine and eureka. He found an envelope with my name and address on it, and called information for my telephone number.

The phone rang loudly, beside my head, jolting me out of my sleep. I picked it up

immediately and heard Pascal’s Voice say “Hello Don” I panicked and hung up without saying a word. Pascal thought there must be a problem with the phone and called right back , I was now awake ,I looked at my watch , it was 10.30 pm , the phone rang again ... I let the answering machine pick up! I was annoyed that I had been woken up out of my sleep in the middle of the night ... How rude. (Did I mention I was single?) It was Pascal again, telling me they had just gotten out of rehearsals and if I would like to join them for dinner... Sorry to miss me and he would see me Monday... click... end of call!

Damn it !!! No wonder I am bloody single !! Home alone on a Friday night !! I felt like such a loser ... So mad at myself!! .. So I curled up and went back to sleep!

Later that night I was once more yanked out of a deep sleep ... Instinctively I answered the phone, “Hi it’s Pascal!” I replied “Hi it’s Don” ... “would you like to go dancing with us tonight!?”Pascal asked. I glanced at my watch, it was midnight! Where are you? I asked. “We are downstairs parked in front of your building!!” Pascal replied.” I will be down in 5 minutes “ I jumped in to my clothes , sprayed on some aftershave and literally was downs stairs in 5 minutes and squeezed into the car with what seemed like all 12 dancers. Later that night as we

danced in a group, having so much fun, the music changed, slowing down....the other dancers seemed to all leave us, my heart raced, the room spun, once again I couldn’t hear anything it was as if it was just the two us, sealed with a kiss, the magic had officially begun that April 28th almost 23 years ago.

Just before we left for NY she came to the house and said ‘stay here in Ireland with me’ She has a great sense of humour and just adores me ( and I her ) but the MOST amazing fact from this is that a woman from HER generation found in her heart the right path. Embracing Don s life choice with no judgments and embracing me since the very first day. She knew in her heart that Don and I were happy in love with each other.

Family day out

Was it loved from the beginning and did you always know it would reach this day?

It was always love from the beginning and a commitment ceremony or wedding was something we always hoped to have. But we wanted it to be Legitimate, we thought many times of doing a “ceremony “(even if it did not have the legal power over our 23 years together .....). And when the vote “ yes “ passed in May 2105 in Ireland (and in the USA just a month after), I said to Don “ we have one year to plan our wedding in Ireland and I choose the date of June 11 so to combine it with Don’s 50th birthday ( June 12 ) to throw him the biggest party of his life . He loves to celebrate his birthday so I wanted the wedding / birthday to be the most magical weekend of his life.

In every relationship there’s one who is the boss and decision maker which one of you has that task?

Pascal says- We are partners and take decision always together in peace and harmony . Don‘s reply - everybody knows Pascal is the boss.....

Family is so important to you both and it was very evident on your wedding day with all your family in attendance, is there anything you would like to say to your family now that you have had time to reflect on the day and the time around it? Don tells us the greatest blessing was having our families with us, their love and support means the world to us our families have been by our sides always thru all life’s ups and

downs. The O’Neill’s embraced and love Pascal as one of their own just as Pascal’s Mom (Sylviane) and brother (Laurent) welcomed and loved me. Their love is unconditional and constant and for that we are truly blessed and eternally grateful. Dons mum and Pascal’s dad are no longer with us so this was a huge void in the day but they are sure they were orchestrating proceedings from their eternal home and ensured everything went as the guys would have wanted.

During his wedding speech Pascal referred to ’’ My one and only girlfriend’’ Mai Shanahan ....” She is Don s oldest aunt, 81, his mom’s sister... ‘When she found out in September 1993 that Dons boyfriend was coming to Ireland, she was

We are each other’s biggest fans and supporters and look forward to continuing to grow together in love and creativity. We have been truly blessed and don’t take that for granted. Having now stepped through the hallowed doorway of matrimony on to a new path in our lives, we are excited to see what new doorways may open for us as the positive tidal wave of love from our wedding day carries us in to the future.

Sound familiar? **VISUALISE what you really want and believe enough in yourself to get there...remember YOUR BODY HEARS WHAT YOUR MNIND THINKS. Try to be as positive as you can and picture yourself in the future. Imagine yourself fitter, healthier, having more energy for the kids and wearing those jeans you always wanted. It can play on our minds, trigger forgotten anxieties and fears, and leave us adrift, feeling that everything has changed forever. Most often, we are unable to move forward without help. Sometimes, the support of family and friends can be of assistance or we get some professional help, and we gradually integrate the trauma into our lives. But some of us can get stuck, not able to make sense of what’s happened, and left with questions that dominate our thoughts: Why didn’t I check on the baby; why did I go to that pub; why didn’t I leave five minutes earlier; why didn’t he ask for help?

To move forward, it is important to answer the questions. There is usually a good answer to them – we did something because we’d done it hundreds of times before and it was always fine. We didn’t do something because we didn’t know that something was going to happen and we had no reason to expect it.

We can get caught up in “what if” and “if only”, and the only way through is to answer the questions. We can’t control everything around us, and blaming ourselves for something that we had no power over is just a way of keeping ourselves locked in the trauma.

Indeed, it is important for good health not to be dehydrated. Some of these drinks can cause dental problems however. Any drink which contains sugars or acids can cause weakening of tooth enamel and lead to dental caries (decay). While soft drinks are obviously in this category, many people may be unaware of the acidic nature of fruit juices or fruit smoothies. These drinks, while a healthy option, can leave a residue of acid on the teeth which can weaken enamel. Warm weather always sees an increase in ice-cream consumption and one needs to remember the sugars that it contains.

All of the above can be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. It is probably wiser to consume the items above around the three main meals of the day.

While eating a meal, saliva is produced and helps to clean the teeth. This reduces the damaging effect of these drinks. It is also worth noting that an over consumption of wine can lead to weakened tooth enamel, so everything should be taken in moderation. Between the main meals, try and have some water and keep the juices to main meal times.
