Killarney Lady Winner of The Great Irish Bake Off on TV3 Killarney Lady Tracy Coyne has a chat with us about what it was like for her to participate in this challenge in front of the eyes of the nation. She also tells us about Tracy at home as a mum and how she juggles work, home and now the title.

Tracy I always think cooking or baking is something that’s handed down from generations is this so in your case? My Mother is a fabulous cook and a very capable baker, as well as being a trained butcher...she could skin, bone and roll a chicken in 90 seconds flat! She hasn’t taught me that trick yet but she taught me how to feed a family well on very little, and how to make meal-times family-times. The kitchen was the heart of her home growing up with her three sisters and it was the heart of our home growing up with my three sisters. For us, baking and cooking is about more than the food, it’s about who you are doing it for and why...this is the greatest lesson I learned from my Mother, and hers...the Kitchen is only a Stage! I always think there is a difference between being a cook and a baker is this so? or are the two linked? Would you be more comfortable cooking dinner for ten people, or making that all important desert dish? I’ve always been more of a cook than a baker…! The dinner party is something I could do with one hand tied behind my back, where the

baking I actually have to give some thought to…! From the moment I went to college, my house became the To-Go-To place for student friends, and their friends whose money had run out before the end of the week! Dinner parties are definitely my thing. Tell us about being a contestant on National TV? Being on the show was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I treated it as such...so few people ever get a chance to do something they love with like-minded people without the distractions of daily life diluting it...the absence of phone, work, email and family was novel and a little disconcerting at first but actually quite liberating as it allowed us to focus on the job at hand and be the best bakers we could be in the moment. Another thing that struck me is that we all get tested in our academic, sporting and work lives, but not so much in other spheres such as hobbies, or obsessions like baking is for the twelve of us, and many others I’m sure! The other contestants were fabulous - when I landed in first to the hotel, I was a bit nervous initially as the other contestants seemed to have so much more technical knowledge and confidence... at that stage really all I wanted was to get through the first episode and not make a show of myself! Actually, as the chatter went on between the contestants, I discovered that I definitely had as much knowledge as the rest, but I mightn’t have had the correct French name of the techniques they were describing..! In the end, I think we were a fairly evenly matched bunch of bakers, and that what separated us was our ability to be daring without risking everything, manage our time with absolute precision, stay organised while working in a space that was two foot by two foot, and keep our heads when things didn’t go exactly to plan... The judges were super nice to us and while I’ve been following the twitter ramblings about the harshness of their critique, truly their judging was fair and honest and nobody viewed it as anything other than that... The editing certainly steered the shows towards dramatic TV but really, what we all wanted was a really good and watchable TV show and that’s what the editing suite gave us. Biddy and Paul are both gentle people and it took a lot to make them look harsh, but what we saw both in the tent and the hotel were closer to benevolent parents than critical judges! Anna of course was the star of the show... she’s such good fun and used her neutral position to tension bust when that was the order of the day...her witty little jibes were what put the smile on your face when your buns were doughy or when you burnt your

nuts...as Alex so famously did...twice!! Ali Baker will probably be one of my best friends for life, and Alex Baker has promised to have my sons train under him when he is an acclaimed French Patisserie...and Elaine Baker was my greatest loss in the tent, I was really shook when she was eliminated as I thought she and I would journey together...which would have been epic! Any surprises out of the Bake Off? Well I didn’t think I would win it, for sure! The things that surprised me most were the ease with which the production crew managed the whole filming aspect. I supposed that if you put a team of professionals - the TV crew, together with a team of amateurs - the contestants, that you would have trauma induced mayhem for the duration... In fact, in the whole four weeks of filming and managing the production, I never saw even a glimmer of a scowl pass over the faces of the floor manager, producers or director - despite contestants wandering off set as the cameras were about to roll, going missing between shoots, getting shirty about publicity material or the myriad of other daft things that throw a spanner in the works... I guess that underlines what consummate professionals we were working with really; it was a pleasure to be a part of the team for the short while we were there.

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry

I’m not sure that I learned too many technical skills while filming the show as the focus was not really on mentoring from the judges. I did develop an absolute confidence in myself as a baker in that I didn’t faff any of the technical challenges too badly despite having never made any of them before, and not having even heard of or seen some of them..! I placed first in three, and second in two of the eight technical challenges which was a pretty good result overall. Prior to participating in the competition, I think there were many of those bakes that I might have avoided for being either too complex, or too time consuming. Actually, now I’m much more inclined to believe I can accomplish something rather than not which is a long way to come for a time poor home baker. How do you manage the kids, full time job and still manage to bake… It was the fact that I travel so much for work that started the baking in earnest really...I was leaving three small children at a crèche daily and Mother’s Guilt was starting to bother me seriously. I remembered spending hours in the kitchen with my own Mother, in addition to the memories of coming home from school to the smell or freshly baked queen cakes or chocolate fudge straight from the oven. It was at the table after school, eating freshly baked delights, which we four girls chatted with Mum about the dramas and laughs of our day at school. This was where we learned to share stories and tears and laughs and I wanted that for my children in some way. While times change and the demands of our daily lives are different, I knew that by giving them those moments in the evenings or the weekends, I could make precious memories for our family and they were easy to achieve with a bag of flour and an oven. Thus was the start of the baking, and as you know, children are demanding in lots of ways and soon, old fashioned queen cakes were not enough...they were asking for novelty cakes and chocolate brownies and we had to expand our repertoire to keep up with the times. Once school lunches started, I embraced

bread and tried to make alternatives to sandwiches for the lunchboxes. Some of these were featured on the Bake Off episodes like the Picnic Pie and the Indian Street Roll Bread both of which are regulars in our house. These bakes mean that I was all done for the lunch boxes in one go and that I’m not buttering sliced pans and making sandwiches before work in the morning - sometimes we do that, but mostly I try to give them something homemade if I can. I guess I believe that anything you make yourself is better than anything that comes from a factory so work with that philosophy when I can. How important is it that kids should be educated to food from an early age? I think children should understand where food comes from and that food, in its natural form, doesn’t come cling wrapped. Baking is a kind of ancient magic that we still practice and hopefully always will in the world. Who would ever think looking at flour and water that it could be made into something as perfectly delicious as crusty bread..? I am very conscious of the amount of nasties in mass produced food, the additives and preservatives, sugar and salt that are present and I wanted to arm my lot with something better. There’s a place for modernity in food but where we can, we try to live by a philosophy that takes the best ingredients we can afford to buy and do as little as possible to them...sometimes it’s a struggle but there’s a recipe for every set of ingredients that will yield something wholesome and delicious... all supermarkets now run weekly offers on fresh veg so there’s no reason not to put on that pan of Sunday Soup! One of our Sunday rituals is to make Super 6 Soup which is never the same; it usually goes to school in flasks.

most people...I’d like to share the secrets and the skill or intuition that makes that easy for me...Having a bake shop where people can eat good things and take some time to simply take some time would be a dream... Since the show has ended I have already done some pretty exciting things and there are more in the pipeline…I was invited to demo at The Taste of Dublin in the same tent as two of my absolute food heroes, Darina Allen and Clodagh McKenna - I have the full range of Darina’s Simply Delicious cook books which were the first I’d ever owned after Deirdre Madden’s All About Home Economics and I got a selfie with Clodagh! There are similar events around the country in the pipeline so it’s been really positive so far. I am currently working with Garvey’s and Supervalu on some special evenings so keep an eye out , I will be at the Dingle Food Festival’s Taste Trail in October with some special recipes to tantalise the taste buds! The traffic to my twitter and website has increased even though both are embryonic so that’s inspiring in that people appear to be attracted to my style of food - that’s the real reward I guess, and validation that other home bakers understand what I do and are prepared to try it too. If you would like to see more of Tracy’s recipes log on to www.TracysKitchen.ie or follow her on twitter @TracysKitchenIE

What now for Tracy? I’ve already been rewarded for my success in the Great Irish Bake Off in the way it has allowed me to show my children that anything is possible if you want it enough and work hard enough to make it happen! I have a blog with some of my favourite recipes on it which I would love to grow and develop a little more...and who knows, maybe there’s a book in it..?! My friends regularly moan about not being able to turn ordinary ingredients into extraordinary dishes and I seem to have a knack with that little bit of magic that evades

Tracy now does host evenings in her own home, or in one of the ladies homes where she will demo a soup, starter, main course and dessert, everybody gets to taste everything and see how it’s prepared and finished. The theme being Fast, Fresh, Feel Good Food that requires the minimum input and delivers a big bang of flavour and goodness.

Red Carpet gowns from Theia dazzle 1600 people at Rose of Tralee Fashion Show in the Dome

Proudly sponsored by The Kerryman newspaper, the Rose of Tralee Autumn Winter Fashion Show is the first such event of the season each year in Ireland and it delivered on its promise to fuel dreams and keep the paparazzi cameras flashing. Over 40 designers and boutiques were joined on the catwalk by The Design Centre, Dublin and Dublin-based designer Synan O’Mahony in showcasing their very best styles for coming Autumn/Winter season. The Producer of the Rose of Tralee Fashion Show, Celia Holman Lee, said: “This is a unique event that consistently delivers top quality styles to nearly 2000 people every year. The Festival Dome is the most ideal venue to stage an event of this magnitude for fashionistas who travel from all over Ireland to see style, elegance and sophistication on the longest catwalk in Ireland.” This year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival kicked-off on Friday August 15th and around 200,000 people were in Tralee over the course of the five-day Festival, the highlights of the street entertainment included Union J, Walking on Cars, three parades, two fireworks displays and an air show.

DON O’Neill promised high-octane Red Carpet glamour and he didn’t disappoint after bringing his most spectacular gowns to the Rose of Tralee Autumn Winter Fashion Show in the Dome. The Ballyheigue native, who is based in New York, said the 1600-strong audience was bigger than attendances at any other fashion shows he’s been involved in from New York to London or Paris.

The General Manager of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Oliver Hurley, commended the local business community and the dedication of the team of 150 volunteers who worked tirelessly to deliver a top class event to people of all ages. Planning for the 2015 Rose of Tralee International Festival will get underway in the coming weeks and the dates for next year’s event are set to be confirmed in September.

Be sure to Hi-light your best assets! .... Stop focusing on the negative - focus on the positive. You should always buy clothes for the size and shape that you are now, rather than the one you would like to be! Balance is vital – its shape not size that matters! Remember that sometimes... less is more!! Any valuable tips when thinking about the price tag. Think Quality over quantity. It is very important to remember the true value of anything you buy is not what you initially pay for it but rather it is the price you pay divided by the number of times that you wear it....Think about it!!!...the most expensive item in your wardrobe can end up being your very best investment! HI AGAIN EVERYONE,

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry

Style

AS THE EVENINGS ARE GETTING DARKER AND THERE IS A DEFINITE CHILL IN THE AIR, THIS MONTH WE ARE GOING TRANSITIONAL WITH OUR WARDROBE. DRESSING FOR AUTUMN CAN BE TRICKY AS THE WEATHER IS SO UNPREDICTABLE, WE CAN HAVE ALL THE SEASONS IN ONE DAY. HERE ARE A FEW LITTLE TIPS FOR YOU.

Clever use of layering is a handy way to give your summer wardrobe extended wearability. Light summer dresses and tops can be worn over long sleeved cotton t-shirts, as cotton provides both warmth if the weather is cold and is a natural fabric so is breathable if the weather is hot. Be careful with layering, the general rule is no more than 3 layers, as it is easy to be swamped by your outfit. A simple way to fall into Autumn (excuse the pun) is the addition of a pretty scarf in the rich autumnal tones like orange, red and mustard yellow. There is no need to rush straight for the darker colours as the autumn/ winter approaches, don’t be afraid to experiment with colour. A big trend this autumn is the combination of pastels with primary colours such as camel, wine, winter cerise and blues. Light grey is a great colour on most complexions and less harsh than black. It adds a fresh, sophisticated feel for the time of year. Trouser lengths can be played around with, from the usual standard length to the latest “ankle –biters”. These are a new length of trousers that sit around an inch above the ankle and are perfect for autumn and look great with a high sandal, ankle boots or flats, making them very versatile. Another way of introducing both warmth and fun is by adding a pair of coloured opaque tights under that summer dress or tunic. As the weather gets colder just increase the denier of the tights. One of my favourite must-have items for the transitional season is the old reliable biker jacket. Perfect over everything from flowing shirts and jeggings to that fitted dress, biker jackets are going nowhere! HOPE YOU ALL ENJOY THE NEW SEASON’S COLLECTIONS, GET OUT THERE AND HAPPY SHOPPING, Best regards Danny

Every year the fashion stakes get higher as everyone makes such an effort to look super chic! This year the judges will be looking for outfits that are on-trend for the Autumn season and appropriate for the day. What’s your STYLE?

Colour me creative!

Colour is key in any design process. It creates the design you are looking for as well as impacting moods and athmosphere. Colour is essential, imagine a home without colour, so don’t be afraid to use it. As with all other aspects of design you must carefully think about what it is you are trying to create as the colours will determine alot in the design. Bright and bold colours will boost the mood and athmosphere and attract the eye immediately whereas dark colours will create a more subdued, meloncholic athmosphere. Pastels on the other hand are very soft and gentle and create a light airy feel. It’s very important to plan your colours correctly. If you like bold designs, great, go for that feature wall with that mad colour! But, if you are still a bit shy why not introduce the colour in accessories like in an area rug, curtains or ornaments. You still get the splash of colour but it’s not as dramatic and difficult to get used to or change if need be. It’s very easy to get carried away with colour so take your time and make no rash decisions. If you can buy some cushions or accessories and see if you still love the colour in a weeks time then you are good to go. Don’t forget colours are fun so play around, you might be surprised what might catch your eye. Be playful and let your home reflect you.

I like that it has SPF in it as well. Bronzer is my best friend. I have several but my day to day one is a super cheap brand called Elf. Great pigment and it lasts so long. It comes with a really pretty peach blush too.

Are the eyes important Hi Ladies, this month we meet the lovely Samantha Mumba as she shares her secrets from head to toe for the best looks.

Do you have a daily skin routine morning and evening, or do you like to try new things with your skin cleansing ritual? I actually keep it pretty simple. In the morning I always put some Astral on (oldschool I know!) and if I’ve worn any make up during the day I ALWAYS take it off before bed. I like to moisturise with Unrefined Coconut Oil at night- for my face and my entire body. It’s the best.

What’s your favourite foundation? Do you have a blush or bronzer you would favour? 14

Any special tips for staying young looking like you do? Thank you. I am very grateful for my family genes! One tip I swear by for skin AND hair is I always sleep on a silk or even a satin pillowcase. I never wake up with those awful creases on my face and my hair stays soft and silky because I don’t have cotton taking all the natural oil and moisture out of it.

to you?

Yes!! I adore mink eyelash extensions. Just those alone are gorgeous and make getting ready so quick. Otherwise a cat eye and lots of mascara is my go to. I will happily leave the house without make up on but I always fill in my brows.

Lips are always important what shades do you feel bring out the best look on you I love soft pinks for everyday. At nighttime I love a bright red or a vampy dark colour.

Nails… are you a shellac fan or are you more into the basic coloured nail but nothing too much I actually just ordered my own gel lamp and colours so I’m really excited to try that. My regular beauty treat is a pedicure. Even if I’m not wearing sandals! Don’t neglect your feet ladies!

What are you favourite treatments when you visit a spa or salon? Always a facial. So there you have it ladies you don’t have to break the bank to look amazing.

Until next time

Coco celebrating 10 years in Business the family roots to own and run her own business, which was her first love! So CoCo which 10 years later is now a household name in Kerry and beyond was born. The shop is bright but cosy, welcoming and well stocked with something for everyone, Occasion wear labels including Fee G and Adrianna there are also many casual labels including Luke Lovely, Street One, Yerse and Peppercorn.

It’s always good to see a business grow and we are delighted to meet with businesses that have stood the test of time and are still going strong. This issue we visit COCO boutique in Listowel where Jennifer is of the 5th generation of Stacks in business at The Arcade in William Street, which started as a drapers in 1861. Today Jennifer’s Grandmother Mary, her father Damian and mother Joan operate Stacks Furniture and Carpets beside her on William Street. Jennifer completed a business degree in UL in 2002 and worked part time in Brown Thomas Limerick while studying. The city life was just not enough and in heart she always knew she would go back to

Jennifer tells us ‘’the best part of my job is meeting people and the satisfaction I get when people bounce out the door after their retail therapy brings me immeasurable joy’’ So tell us a little about Jennifer? ‘I am married to Brian for ten years, he is an amazing husband and business partner, always beside me 100% and supporting me in whatever I want to do, he is continuously supporting me to drive the business’. We have three children, Robbie 6, Lila 3 and Ogie 2, so it’s a busy house, I guess this was part of the reason we opened Coco Kids in 2012 in Listowel, stocking casual kids wear for boys and girls from new-born to age 12 years! Business has changed over the past number of years with the dreaded “R” word (one of 2 words that are banned from Coco,

recession and fat) but we stuck firm to our ideal of what Coco is about when it was established in 2004, quality fabrics, reasonable prices and most importantly a shopping experience and customer service that is unparalleled. So looking forward for the Autumn season we asked Jennifer what’s in store for the lovely ladies of listowel and beyond. We have expanded our range to include, ATIR shape wear (Irish made) which has been a great success so far and very exciting is the arrival of Bourbon the Amy Huberman shoe collection and of course we have a host of local designers such as Orla O’Connor designs, Aoife Hannon hats and Pia bags which we love to support!!! We are delighted to be celebrating ten years and are looking forward to many more!

Legal Compliance Writing Your CV – Top Tips

Earlier this year the Irish Government announced that they hoped 48,000 new jobs would be created in Ireland during 2014. This brings to light the importance of CV writing for Jobseekers. Your CV is a thirty second advertisement to get you invited to an interview. Your CV should reassure the reader of three things and three things only. 1. Yes I can do THIS job, not just any job but this one 2. Yes, I am a highly motivated person 3. Yes, I will add value to your organisation

A CV should have a clear format, no spelling mistakes and covers a range of topics.

of each job that is relevant to this role you are applying for.

Some CV’s have too much information that is not important to the employer. There is no need to include your date of birth, marital status or number of children on your CV. Your experience, qualifications and skills should speak for themselves.

It is important to show you have interests outside of a workplace environment e.g. Reading, Full clean driving license, Travelling etc.

Inserting a personal profile on the first page of your CV is a useful way of flagging an interest and skills for a particular career on your CV. This should be inserted at the beginning of the CV and should be tailored to suit the post that you are applying for. This should be 2-3 lines maximum. Educational qualifications should be placed in chronological order from most recent to past. Your employment history should have the dates of employment, the name and address of the company, the job title and details on the roles and responsibilities outlined. It is not enough to simply state the name of your previous company and the role - you should expand on the responsibilities section

The HR Suite offer advice on CV preparation to jobseekers - this is a personal service that ensures you receive a CV and cover letter that is customised to your experience and skills ensuring that your application is relevant and is of the highest professional standards. We also conduct mock interviews and offer advice on interview preparation. For more information please visit our new recruitment website www.thejobsuite.com.

The BUMBLEance Mega Push! Dingle to Dublin / An Daingean go dtí Átha Cliath Kerryman, Ice Explorer & adventurer Mike O’Shea from Dingle, recently visited Tony Heffernan (originally from Cork) in his family home on the Dingle Peninsula to map out his plans to raise €250,000 to fund the

development of “BUMBLEance”, the National Children’s Ambulance service. The Event, launched by Broadcaster Miriam O Callaghan, is asking members of the public to get involved and support this great cause. Aptly named the BUMBLEance Mega Push, involves pushing a special BUMBLEance vehicle from Dingle to Dublin, a total of 355 kilometres. The stress of such a trip is normally left on the shoulders of parents, however with BUMBLEance, this stress is taken away, the parents and the child can concentrate of spending as much quality time together during the child’s remaining days.

Not only will the charity be seeking Corporate and Public support with the fundraising, they are also asking people to TEXT the word BUZZ to 50300 to donate €4 to the charity. FASHION is FUN If I asked you to look around right now. What would you see? I am hoping that you are not alone when you are reading this because normally when we look around us we see people, and what do you notice about all of those people? And once again, I am really hoping that the people around you are clothed so that I can get to my point. We see Fashion because Fashion is a part of every day life; but unlike most things that belong in our every day lives, people haven’t yet fully embraced it. People can often feel very alienated by fashion, and even as a fashion addict myself, I can feel that way too. You see, fashion isn’t just about clothes, it is also a way to express ourselves. This is all fashion is about really (and staying dressed and warm!) but like most things, it has been built into an empire. To some, a very scary empire that just happens to make a lot of money. Because being into fashion is something that people don’t understand, they tend to try and make fun of it. People try and alienate it and avoid it, but it doesn’t have to be that way. You just have to realise that fashion isn’t just about “The Devil Wears Prada”. Fashion is fun. I don’t even know why I have to state that because you know it. If you have ever dressed up for an event, you can’t tell me that you didn’t enjoy

Having fun with fashion on my holidays in Cruit Island, Donegal Tutu by Listowel based designer Orla O Connor. Jumper by Penneys. yourself a little bit? If you didn’t enjoy picking out your outfit or your shoes or the matching handbag, did you at least enjoy the longwinded discussions that you had with your friends about it? I think everyone still wants to live out their Cinderella fantasies and fashion is the outlet for that. You don’t need to enter the Anna Wintour world (even though that is where I am hoping to head ), because I think that is one of the main things that drive people away. You don’t need to analyse the runways or even pore over fashion magazines. You just need to try and embrace fashion in a way that you are comfortable with. It doesn’t need to be something scary

that lives in your closet ( literally ) but it just needs to be something that we are all willing to accept and enjoy. So, just accept it and enjoy it. Then join me in prancing around fields and beaches in tutu skirts, because that is the side of fashion that I enjoy. The fun side. That I have embraced and that I love. You just have to embrace it too. Until next month. Have fun.

Optional additions: Chocolate Chips, Walnuts, Currants or sprinkle each bun with a mix of Brown Sugar and Cinnamon before they go in the oven.

CO

Fold this into the banana mixture. Spoon this runny mixture evenly into the paper cases – each one will be just over half full.

Bake these in the oven for 25-30 Minutes until they spring back to a pressed finger.

FUSSY EATERS

According to recent research from Canada, up to 35% of toddlers and pre-school children are described by their parents as poor or picky eaters. Children’s eating habits are often a major worry for parents. Between 2 and 5 years of age, children’s appetites tend to be erratic and the amount of food eaten at mealtimes can vary quite alot. Although their food intake may fluctuate considerably from day to day, toddlers remain healthy and grow normally. Betweem 2 and 5 years of age, children’s growth rate slows down dramatically. During the first year of life, a baby gains on average 12 ½ lbs in weight and 9 ½ inches in length. During the second year of life, a toddler gains on average 5 ½ lbs in weight and 4 ½ inches in length. This reduction in growth causes a physiological decrease in appetite. It is important for parents to allow children to respond to their internal hunger cues and stop eating when they feel full. The amount of food eaten at each meal will vary from day to day depending on a child’s appetite, activity levels and whether the child is experiencing a growth spurt. Research has shown that the more children are pressured to eat certain foods, the more likely they are to refuse them. It is important for parents to lead by example - children are more likely to try and enjoy new foods if they regularly see their parents eating these foods.

Mouth Cancer Awareness Marcas Mac Domhnaill Welcome to this month’s column. Tá Meán Fómhair buailte linn arís. Every September a mouth cancer awareness campaign is run by the Irish Cancer Society, along with the Irish Dental Association and the dental hospitals. It will be on Wednesday, September 17th, this year. The aim is to promote awareness of mouth cancer, and also to afford people the opportunity of getting a free screening with a dentist. Mouth cancer (cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx) is on the increase globally. In Ireland, around 300 new cases are seen each year. The incidence of mouth cancer has increased faster than any other type of cancer in the United Kingdom in the last 25 years. Like any cancer, early detection is of the utmost importance. In Ireland, only half of the new cases each year are caught at early stages. People have been attending their dentists less frequently in the last few years due to the cutbacks in the medical card and PRSI schemes. It is worth noting that both of these schemes still offer a free dental examination once a year. If you were unaware of this perhaps it is time to get a check-up with your dentist. A mouth cancer examination is usually done at your routine dental examination. Signs and Symptoms. What should I look out for? The following could indicate mouth cancer: A sore or ulcer that does not heal, or difficulty in chewing or swallowing. A swelling in the mouth, a loose tooth or pain in the jaw that cannot be explained, should be investigated. Any unexplained numbness, earache or bleeding nose should warrant further scrutiny. If hoarseness persists more than three weeks, it should be followed up. This list is not exhaustive. In fact any unexplained abnormality should be checked out. During a mouth cancer examination, the dentist will examine the neck, lips, cheeks, tongue, the palate and the floor of the mouth. What can I do to help my mouth stay healthy? 1. One should visit the dentist on a regular basis (remember free check-ups are available for medical card and PRSI patients, once every year). 2. When cleaning your teeth, look out for any changes in the mouth. 3. Use a barrier cream on your lips when exposed to the sun. 4. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, as the vitamins help to protect the body from cancer. Smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, whether on their own or worse still, when used together, increase the chances of mouth cancer. Chewing tobacco and excessive sunlight exposure are also dangerous. HPV, or the human papilloma virus can be a risk factor for mouth cancer, and can be spread through oral sex. Everybody should be aware of the risk factors and what to look out for. Remember, Wednesday, September 17th, is Mouth Cancer Awareness Day. Further information can be found on www. mouthcancerawareness.ie. If you know of somebody that has not had a dental examination for a long while, why not suggest it to them. It might just save a life! MAC DOMHNAILL DENTAL TRALEE, 11 Denny Street Tralee 066 7121457, fiacloir@gmail.com

EAT CLEAN

TRAIN SMART Eating clean and training smart can be as simple as it sound but for some of us knowing where or how to start is the problem. Keeping it simple and uncomplicated is the best way to go. Doing the same thing day after day and expecting different results is the sign of insanity (Benjamin Franklin). In other words if you don’t change something than nothing will change. Change your eating habits and you will either feel better or worse. Change your exercise program or you will never get stronger or fitter depending on your goals. Write down what you would like to change with regards to your body and health and do not let your age or circumstance influence your decision. Weather your goal is to get fit, lose weight or build muscle your food choices will probably need to change. A good place to start is clean up the types of food you eat and go for natural foods and preferable with little or no processing. Choose plenty fruit, vegetables (fresh or frozen), meat, fish, nuts and water. These are good choices in most nutrition plans but may need to be modified if you have specific needs. Reduce your intake of cakes, pastries, sweets, crisps, fried food, takeaways, fizzy drinks etc. Most of us know what types of foods are good and bad but we either choose to ignore that we eat unhealthy or we are so used to having them that we don’t take notice of how much crap we actually consume. Keeping a food and exercise diary for one week is a great way of noticing your habits to food and exercise. Record everything that you eat and ever time you exercise, this will make you very aware of what times you eat, if you skip meals or go along time without eating. More importantly you will be able to see where you can make changes. If you find this exercise helpful keeping a diary is something you can continue to do, there are even apps you can download onto your phone now to make it easier It takes approximately 4-6 weeks for your body to adapt to a particular exercise or stress put on it. So by doing the same exercises each week without changing any variable you may never get stronger or fitter and therefore never get the results you want or need. You need to put a plan in place and set yourself some goals. The goals you set need to be realistic for your currant state of fitness. If you haven’t ran since you competed in your local

community games ten years ago there is a very good chance you won’t run a marathon next week. However if running a marathon is your goal than a good goal may be running a 5km fun run. Once an achievement is met move or change your goals .e.g. next time run it faster or increase your distance. Each time you reach a goal move the marker so you progressively either get fitter, faster, and stronger or a combination of all three. This can be applied to any type of sport, all you have to do is track your results and once you have reached your goal than change it. When starting any new type of exercise you are not familiar with it is safer to get professional advice.

Getting fit and in shape for your wedding! Getting fit and in shape for your wedding? We asked Majella and the team in CURVES for some advice on preparing to look and feel great on your big day Brides to be should make goals that are SMART e.g. Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timed. You need to be realistic in your goals. Give yourself plenty of time and make sure your approach is based on good nutrition and fitness.

are all time poor at sticking to meal plans none more so than a bride to be… don’t be tempted to skip meals, try to eat every 3 hours little and often, be mindful of what you eat, drink at least 1.5 litres of water daily and try to stop eating 3 hours before going to bed. This combined with both cardio and strength training will boost your metabolism and encourage your body to be the best it can be. Remember its quality over quantity in both food and exercise…relax and enjoy all the milestones along the way.

We recommend starting at least a year before your wedding and with a positive mental attitude and consistency you won’t set yourself realistic goals within an unrealistic time frame. Women

The first dance is almost as important as a good meal at your wedding, it’s so important to take time to choose the right entertainment so your guests will participate in the day the party will continue. We catch up with one of the most popular wedding bands in Kerry and they share their thoughts and tips for couples with us. Midnite Cafe has become, for many happy couples, the band to have at your wedding. There is only one thing that all people getting married require of their band; that they keep the dance floor full! So when we started performing together, our aim was to create an act that was certain to do just that. Over the years we have honed our skills and perfected our technique of quickly getting people out on the dance floor and keeping them there. it‘s something that happens night after night without exception. Our show is all about providing outstanding entertainment and fun for you and your guests.

Connect weddings We all know planning a wedding is a stressful time, there are all too many people around you willing to dish out advice on what you must have and what you need….’ you should have blue for your bridesmaids’ and so on… Remember all the advice in the world can come and go it’s your day. We all need some guidelines so the suggestion from the experts is to plan and have a plan. The following points should be the highlight of your plan

Wedding Tips

VENUE Where would you like to have your ceremony, what are your options, would you like to do it all in the one venue or are you opting for the church ceremony and hotel. The time of year is very important to the venue so keep that in mind too, should you want to have an outdoor celebration of your vows or reception. DRESS Take time, don’t rush into it but don’t spend months going from shop to shop either, as that is just stressful and can confuse you even more. We all have a dream dress in mind when thinking of the big day, how often does it become the dress we walk the aisle in… be practical and realistic, wear something that will be comfortable you will be in it all day. Don’t bring too many with you when choosing the dress as it can become confusing. GUEST LIST It’s your day so again don’t be forced into inviting people for the sake of it, your special day to share with friends and family. It doesn’t have to turn into the local festival with your mother’s neighbour’s sister’s best friend (who hasn’t seen you since you were 2) sitting in the room sharing your day… you choose your guest list. Times have changed a lot and now more couples are paying their own expenses on the day so share it with your nearest and dearest. There will always be someone upset over not being invited so just let it happen. THE GROOM Sometimes the groom gets lost in the organising and most of them are quiet happy to sit back and let the bride do all the planning, just remember it’s his special day too, so build memories that you will have when the day is all over, and you can look back and laugh and share, planning the day is as much part of the fun and excitement as the day itself so make sure and include him.

Weddings can be expensive, so plan ahead, before you rush out and buy yet another outfit that will be in the wardrobe after one wear ask yourself how can I change the look? a new wrap, bag and shoes ensemble can breath new life into an old outfit and save you lots. Carmel and the team in That’s Perfect in Tralee have a large selection of accessories to complete any outfit and they can transform a simple dress into a stunning outfit. Shoes, Bag and fascinators are only a small part of the collection available. They also carry a large selection of casual accessories so even for the all important after party you will still look your best. A must on your wedding planning list That’s Perfect, the Mall, Tralee.

THE MAMMIES Every Irish mammy loves to plan her daughter’s big day... don’t forget the grooms mammy, they sometimes can feel left out so ensure that they are included... it paves the way for a smoother relationship in the years to follow. They will both be good to babysit in alter time so let them both have some of the excitement, but don’t forget the gentle reminder that it’s your day...

PREPARING FOR YOUR BIG DAY

Every bride wants to be blooming and gorgeous for her wedding day. Planning involves so much from dresses, cakes and invites that sometimes the importance of being healthy gets forgotten; yet being healthy is the foundation stone of looking and feeling fabulous. So, whether your wedding is one year or three months away there is plenty of things you can do to countdown to being healthy. Here are some pointers for your pre-wedding health checklist! Don’t be tempted to try “quick fix” programmes as it is my experience that when people revert back to their normal eating afterwards they are very likely to put most, or even more, weight on again. If you get into a rhythm of healthy eating and exercise, it can be an important lifestyle change for the rest of your life.

Healthy hair and skin

Once again foods and lifestyle are important to get a healthy appearance. Women who are troubled by facial hair or acne can benefit from medical advice to out rule PCOS and see what medical treatments can help them.

Preparing for your Honeymoon

Fitting into that Special Dress

Obviously every girl wants to be an ideal weight for fitting into her fabulous dress. With someone forward planning this can be achieved with healthy eating and exercise. Most personal trainers and gym now provide excellent nutritional / exercise programmes that you can follow at home or with a gym group/trainer. Simple food adjustments such as increasing your intake of healthy proteins rather than carbs etc. can make a difference. Increasing fluid intake is crucial and getting into the right type of exercise regimen is important. Many women avoid weight training thinking it will “bulk them up”. That is a complete myth-in fact you will have beautifully toned arms and shoulders to flatter your dress. Try and encourage some other people, such as your bridesmaids or future hubby to join you in your endeavours as research quite clearly shows that people lose weight more easily if they are part of a group.

Nowadays many couples travel far afield for that special honeymoon. This may involve travel vaccinations to keep you healthy; do check out what vaccines you will need. Be aware that some vaccines can make you a bit sick so don’t leave it until that last minute-that way feeling unwell before your big day can be avoided.

existing contraception close to the time of the wedding. Hormonal contraception such as the low dose Pill or Mirena can cause irregular, unpredictable bleeding in the first couple of months; so any changes should be planned well in advance. Another area to be considered is having a “Him/Hers Fertility Check” to provide information on future fertility. For couples who do want to conceive in the near future we recommend preconception Folic Acid for a minimum of three months prior to conception. Cutting back on cigarette smoking/alcohol, ensuring any chronic medical conditions are under control and optimising BMI are also important considerations.

Hens and Stags

The hen and stag weekends are a great chance to have some craic and unwind. Stay safe and make sure there is someone to keep an eye out for you! So whether your Big Day is next month or next year, I hope you find the health advice useful. Have a FABULOUS day and we will see your photo in the local papers.

*all advice here is general information for advisory purpose only so please consult with your own doctor for full professional advice on your concerns.

Stress and getting married

There are no two ways about it-if you are planning a wedding stress happens!!! Try to find time out for yourself. Doing regular exercise can be helpful. We are lucky in Kerry to be able to get out on a multitude of beaches to walk or run. Maybe hillwalking would be your thing. Or Yoga-so many options exist. We also know that stress affects your immune system and who wants coughs or cold sores in the run in to their wedding. Stress can also counteract weight loss by altering metabolism and weight.

Maybe Baby… maybe not

Gone are the days when it was presumed the patter of tiny feet happened nine months after a wedding. If you don’t think you want to get pregnant straight away ensure you consider what the most appropriate contraception is for you. I would also advise not changing from your
