Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year

Chris & Colette

First issue of 2016 comes out on Friday the 8th of January Who would have thought, as little as only a few years ago, we would be where we are now. Tralee has bounced back, grown, matured, again in the last few years. The reason I say “again “ is because Tralee, like the rest of Ireland has seen adversity, albeit in different guises before. As the famous quote from Ghandi reads “Adversity is the mother of progress” .Tralee as a town and society has bounced back, through its business growth, through its achievements, through its endeavours, every day week and month, by its people. And we have grown too! The Tralee Advertiser is an important element in the fabric of everyday life in Tralee. We report, we support, we promote, we encourage ...and why? Its all for the betterment of Tralee as a place to live and work . We now publish with pride, a bigger and we hope, better, weekly magazine, and report “Whats happening in Tralee “ as our tag line says! This little publication would in no way exist without you, its readers who demand to read it each week nor without our Advertisers who ensure that we can bring this magazine to you FREE every week. At this time of year , as throughout the year, we urge you to support them, to buy local, because thats where all our livelihoods come from ....the local economy. A big thank you to our contributors, who help keep us fresh, current and topical, Geraldine in Siamsa Tire, Rebecca in BexBlah beauty & Fitness, Miriams Legal Corner, James in Casey & Co accountants, Frances in Citizens information, Joe, Aoife & Niamh from The Barbers, Adam & Mark from Blueteam GSM gadgets, our new guy Billy from HRI with more technology, Chef Noel, Our photographers John Cleary & Domnick Walsh & Pat for all his Sports analysis. Our backroom team, The Keanes & Co at Kingdom Printers and Rafal, our excellent creative hardworking graphic designer from Expose Design, who both ensure we deliver an excellent publication EVERY week! And to everybody else who send us in photos, articles, poems, stories and so much more, a big thank you. Keep doing it ...we really do appreciate it. We are looking forward to a little break now... 50 issues back to back and still here! We start all over again on January 8th with our first issue of 2016 and shortly after that , the launch of the Digital Edition of the Tralee Advertiser which we are very excited about. This will give everybody the ability to read, on their smartphone or Tablet/iPad, any where in the world, the most recent edition of The Tralee Advertiser and see “Whats really happening in Tralee !”

We hope you have a Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year Chris & Colette Shortt 2

GROOMING TIPS FROM THE BARBER...

M: 0873931388

FESTIVE SEASON STYLES Whether the long-haired man bun or the close cropped style of the fade, one of the four hairstyles is sure to get you through this festive season.

The undercut

Kathleen ward signs her new book “A Violation Against Women” for Margaret Lucid Ardfert in O’Mahony’s Book Store Upper Castle Street,Tralee on Saturday.

The simplest way to describe this hairstyle would be short sides and long top. The beauty of the cut is both the simplicity and amount of variation you can choose from. No matter what hair type you have –curly or straight, there exists an undercut for you.

Top Knot

This is a mixture of two of the trendiest cuts of 2015- the msn bun and the undercut. Short back and sides and the top tied up or left down loose and messy. A low maintenance haircut that always looks great.

The Fade

A long or short top and usually very short sides. A fade normally looks better in darker hair as you can clearly see the definition . At the moment it seems at ‘’the barber...’’ that medium fades are proving most popular.

Pupils of Scoil Eoin,Balloonagh,Tralee who took part in the Schools annual Christmas Concert on Monday evening

Comb-over

A short back and sides and a longer top, usually worn up and over. Some choose to put a line in this cut to create a disconnection. Be careful not to get the line too often, however as the further it moves in to the middle of the head the more unmanageable its becomes.

Gift vouchers available

SHORT STORY

Get your business noticed in Tralee’s favourite Friday read

CHRISTMAS IS FOR LOVE Christmas is for love. It is for joy, for giving and sharing, for laughter, for reuniting with family and friends, for tinsel and brightly covered packages. But, mostly Christmas is for love. I had not believed this until a small elfin like pupil with wide innocent eyes and soft rosy cheeks gave me a wondrous gift one Christmas. Matthew was a 10 year old orphan who lived with his aunt, a bitter, middle aged woman greatly annoyed with the burden of caring for her dead sister’s son. She never failed to remind young Matthew, if it hadn’t been for her generosity, he would be a vagrant, homeless waif. Still, with all the scolding and chilliness at home, he was a sweet and gentle child. I had not noticed Matthew particularly until he began staying after class each day [at the risk of arousing his aunt’s anger so I learned later] to help me straighten up the room. We did this quietly and comfortably, not speaking much, but enjoying the solitude of that hour of the day. When we did talk, Matthew spoke mostly of his mother. Though he was quite young when she died, he remembered a kind, gentle, loving woman who always spent time with him. As Christmas drew near however, Matthew failed to stay after school each day. I looked forward to his coming, and when the days passed and he continued to scamper hurriedly from the room after class, I stopped him one afternoon and asked him why he no longer helped me in the room. I told him how I had missed him, and his large brown eyes lit up eagerly as he replied, ‘Did you really miss me?’ I explained how he had been my best helper, ‘I was making you a surprise,’ he whispered confidentially. ‘It’s for Christmas.’ With that, he became embarrassed and dashed from the room. He didn’t stay after school any more after that. Finally came the last school day before Christmas. Matthew crept slowly into the room late that afternoon with his hands concealing something behind his back. ‘I have your present,’ he said timidly when I looked up. ‘I hope you like it.’ He held out his hands, and there lying in his small palms was a tiny wooden box. ‘It’s beautiful, Matthew. Is there something in it?’ I asked opening the top to look inside. ‘Oh you can’t see what’s in it,’ he replied, ‘and you can’t touch it, or taste it or feel it, but mother always said it makes you feel good all the time, warm on cold nights and safe when you’re all alone.’ I gazed into the empty box. ‘What is it, Matthew’ I asked gently, ‘that will make me feel so good?’ ‘It’s love,’ he whispered softly, ‘and mother always said it’s best when you give it away.’ He turned and quietly left the room. So now I keep a small box crudely made of scraps of wood on the piano in my living room and only smile when inquiring friends raise quizzical eyebrows when I explain to them there is love in it. Yes, Christmas is for gaiety, mirth, song, and for good and wondrous gifts. But mostly, Christmas is for love.

SEASONS GREETINGS FROM KERRY RIDING CLUB Kerry Riding Club finished 2015 in style with their end of year dressage and show jumping league. But the excitement didn’t end there as we were celebrating the birthdays of club members Laura Collins Nolan and Ann McGrath. Not only did Ann get to spend her birthday doing what she loves most she also got surprised by her longtime partner with a secret proposal much to the delight of other Kerry Riding Club members. Champagne was flowing and it was smiles all around when she readily accepted.

Kerry Riding Club would like to wish everyone a very Happy and Safe Christmas and should you wish to join us in the New Year please contact us on 087 7971970 or follow us on Facebook www.facebook.com/KerryRidingClub or Twitter www. twitter.com/kerryridingclub

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: PAYING THE LOCAL PROPERTY TAX Question I paid my Local Property Tax in monthly instalments from my wages last year. However I’d like to pay it in a single lump sum payment next year. How do I find out how much is due and how can I change my payment method? Answer Your Local Property Tax (LPT) is based on the valuation of your property on 1 May 2013. The rate you pay for 2016 may vary from the 2015 rate, because of the local adjustment factor. This means that the basic LPT rates can be adjusted up or down by up to15% in different local authority areas. Revenue’s online calculator allows you to check how much LPT is payable in different local authority areas. The calculator is available on revenue.ie. If your local authority has adjusted the basic rate and this is different from what you paid in 2015, you will get a letter from Revenue informing you of this. You can also check how much LPT you owe for 2016 by accessing your LPT record online on revenue.ie using your PPS number, Property ID and PIN. In your case, you must contact Revenue by 7 January 2016 to change your payment method and arrange to pay in full in one lump sum. The easiest way to do this is to use the LPT online system. If you need help with the online system, you can call the LPT helpline on 1890 200 255. You can pay using any of the following methods: • Debit or credit card: This option is available online. Note that if you pay by debit or credit card the deduction will be made immediately. • Bank single debit authority: Under a single debit authority you can authorise your bank or financial institution to pay Revenue the specified amount of LPT due. This amount is taken from your bank account in one deduction on 21 March 2016 and is paid directly to Revenue. • •Cash or debit/credit card payments through certain payment service providers (you can check the list on revenue.ie). A transaction charge usually applies. • You can also pay by cheque or postal order (this option is not available online).

END OF THE TWO-TIER HEALTH SYSTEM IS ANSWER TO WAITING LISTS

Sinn Féin TD Kerry North and West Limerick, Martin Ferris TD has today called for radical reform to the health service in the wake the launch of the new Sinn Féin policy document: Sinn Féin Better4Health, which has universal healthcare as its main proposal. Deputy Ferris said: “The long waiting lists and people lying on trolleys in Kerry today are testament to the failed health policies of successive governments. “Nationally, there were 349 people on trolleys yesterday and this is not acceptable or decent. The truth is that treatment delayed is treatment denied and it is no exaggeration to say that people are dying because of this crisis. “The unacceptable waiting lists for access to consultants, for procedures, for treatments, for outpatient appointments, are all products of a public health system that is lacking staff, lacking resources and which is demoralised because of it. “The private healthcare industry has been a parasite on the back of our public health system and its only motivation is profit. “Our vision is of a quality, accessible, public healthcare system, a world-class system of universal healthcare, accessed on the basis of need, free at the point of delivery and funded by progressive taxation. “That is now not just a vision, it is now also a plan and I am proud as a Sinn Féin deputy to be associated with it.”

MISTLETOE AND WINE 2015

A seasonal entertainment at Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Sunday, December 20th , 7.30pm Tickets available from Siamsa Tire Box office on 0667123055 The 14th annual Mistletoe and Wine concert, staged by Kerry School of Music and directed by Aidan O’ Carroll is taking place in Ballyroe Heights Hotel on Sunday, December 21st at 7.30pm. The annual Mistletow and Wine has become a fixed part of the pre-Christmas Concert Season in recent years. Many music lovers regard the Christmas season as starting with this very popular entertainment. Devised and directed by Aidan O Carroll the evening presents a varied miscellany of items of a seasonal nature performed by some very special guests who drop in as in the rambling house of old. This year’s guest list features the Kerry School of Music Flute Orchestra, Kerry Chamber Choir and Orchestra, actor/director Tim Landers, Poet Noel King and award winning Soprano Aisling O’ Carroll. The musical items as always are interspersed with poems and prose readings and story-telling. And just to ensure that the seasonal atmosphere prevails, complimentary mulled wine and mince pies are served at the interval. Patrons can make a complete evening of it by having a pre-concert evening meal in the hotel’s renowned Palace Restaurant and Bistro. Tickets are available from Kerry School of Music box office on 0667125690. Proceeds go the Kerry School of Music Access Fund which assists talented but needy students.

DONT DUMP THAT IPHONE ! BLUE TEAM GSM CAN FIX IT!!

One of the most popular sights nowadays must be someone talking into their mobile phone and the screen is all cracked ! I personally experience this as a father of 3 teenage kids (sorry 2 and a 21 year old ).All of them carrying iPHONES in their pockets (or should I say in their hands! as it doesnt seem to leave it ) My youngest (14) is doing the best job of keeping his intact ....the other 2 are a disaster !! iPhones seem to be most prone to this (the absence of Gorilla glass maybe ?) but generally as most , smartphones get larger screens then the problem is getting more common . What do you do ? Send it back to Apple or go into one of their stores on your annual trip to the big smoke ? Thats where Adam and his team at Blue Team GSM step in. Based in Barrack lane , beside Pennys in the mall , Adam offers a whole range of services designed on keeping your electronic device fit and healthy . They really specialise in all Apple products , and can carry out a whole host of repairs on your iPhone; Ipod ; Ipad ; Macbooks...from a cracked screen on an iPhone (about €50-60 upwards, depending on model ) to a hard-drive on the MacBook and everything else in between . But they are experts on other brands too , from HTC to Samsungs to Sony Xperias. “We are one of the few outlets that carry a full selection of genuine batteries for all Smartphones , a lot of places just stock generic batteries and these can cause problems down the line “ says Adam “ Shorter battery life , overheating , even damaging your device , could happen “ One of the most popular things to do nowadays is to give your phone a “full service treatment “ and this can breath life back into your sluggish phone . “Most smartphones today are more powerful than computers or laptops of 5 years ago . Yet , people constantly are servicing their computers to keep them going at optimum level and often ignore their phones . “ says Adam . “Our unique Smartphone service will clear all the unnecessary data clogging up your phone , upgrade to the latest operating system and effectively renew your phone , and all at a low cost “ says Adam All repairs and servicing are done by highly qualified technicians and Blueteam Gsm give a secure backup service to all work they do . Recently they have expanded their floorspace and carry one of the largest selection of phonecases and Drones in Tralee, if not Kerry.”The most popular Drones these days are the X8W , which is our best seller , at €140 , which has a HD camera and WiFi on board. Also the X5C at just €80 and the X5SW for €110 which also has both camera and WiFi “ says Mark , Blueteams Drone expert Also they have headphones , Carkits , dual sim phones(ideal for travelling abroad ) and refurbished phones available in their store . So next time you see someone with a cracked screen , send them along to Blueteam GSM in Barrack Lane ....Sorted !! Blueteam GSM can be contacted on 066-7103553 or adam@blueteamgsm.com 30

TRALEE CREDIT UNION ASSETS GROW TO €185 MILLION.

Tralee Credit Union held its Annual General Meeting on Monday 14th of December in Fels Point Hotel with its Board of Directors reporting a very positive and busy year for the credit union with Assets now standing at €185 Million and Local Members Savings growing to €158 Million. The noticeable highlight of the year was the transfer of assets of Killorglin Credit Union to Tralee Credit Union last December. Tom Lawlor, Chairman said that they were aware of the transfer at last year’s AGM but were bound by the confidentiality agreement with the Central Bank not to publicise it due to the sensitivity of the issue and concerns that savings might be withdrawn in Killorglin. The transfer to Tralee Credit Union ensured that credit union services remained in the Killorglin area and that all members are now owners of a stronger credit union. Katrina Rice, CFO highlighted the healthy financial position of the credit union for the year. Total income was up by 18% to €7.5 million, mainly from the interest they received from the interest on members’ loans and their investments, although Katrina mentioned that the level of return from their investments continues to fall. Total Expenses of €2 million was down on last year mainly due to less provisioning in Bad Debts and very strong recovery in loans written off. Delinquency levels for the credit union were at its lowest in seven years with over €500,000 bad debts recovered from the Killorglin area alone, highlighting the number of members who continue to work with the credit union in repaying their debts. The salaries bill increased substantially in the year by 33% to €1.5 million due to the addition of Killorglin and necessary additional staff to deal with compliance and internal audit functions. The credit union paid out €645,000 to cover its members for Death Benefit Insurance and Life Savings and Loan Protection Insurance, highlighting the uniqueness and value of being a credit union member. As a not for profit financial co-operative the good news for its members was the level of surplus income being returned to members by way of Dividend and Loan Interest Rebate to Borrowers. The AGM passed a proposal of .75% Dividend of over €1 million to members. They highlighted that the high DIRT tax rate of 41% will mean that over €433,000 of this Dividend will go directly to Revenue. The proposal to give Borrowers 7.5% Loan Interest Rebate (a refund on the interest they paid on their loans) was also passed with over €320,000 being returned to its borrowers, this is not subject to DIRT. Tom Lawlor Chairman said “loans are the main source of income for the credit union. This year again €4.3 million (almost 60%) of our income came from our borrowing members so we were delighted to reward our members for borrowing with us”. Fintan Ryan CEO said “we have over 42,000 members who can now access their account in any of our three offices in Tralee, Castleisland and Killorglin. The building in Killorglin is a huge asset and we are currently looking at ways to make the building more productive for us”. Fintan highlighted the high volume of transactions going through the credit union, with on average of 62,700 transactions a month and take pride in the level of personal service our members receive. We are working hard to bring you a Debit Card and are presently testing the card among our staff and board members. This is an exciting development for Tralee Credit Union and will complete our banking suite of services” Fintan highlighted the importance of the Loan Book to the credit union’s income and its key to a sustainable future. Tralee Credit Union lent out over €25 million last year, that’s over €2 million going into the local economy a month. Apart from taking on Killorglin’s loan book, the credit union’s overall loan book increased by over €2 million to €56.7 million. Fintan said “this year we have €30 Million to Lend so for anyone who needs a loan, talk to us. We have reduced our Motor Loan rate available on all loans until March and are part of the national pilot Personal Micro Credit Loans for any social welfare recipients who wish to borrow and repay their loan through An Post’s Household Budget Scheme”. Membership of Tralee Credit Union is voluntary and open to everyone who lives and works within Tralee, Castleisland and the Killorglin area. CHRISTMAS MARKET IN THE SQUARE

“MARKET” in your diary! The Square in Tralee has sprung to life with the arrival of the Christmas Market until next Wednesday 23 December as part of the Christmas Spraoi in Tralee. Food and craft producers from Kerry have been trading in the heart of the town since Thursday 17th December offering shoppers added choice when buying gifts for loved ones or to enjoy some tasty treats. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “The decision to introduce a Christmas Market to the Town Centre from 17-23 December follows the success of the recent Tralee Food Festival and feedback from the Shoppers Forum which was held earlier in the year. The market in The Square is open to local/visiting food producers and craft makers with the prerequisite that if they haven’t made it, they can’t sell it.” The number of stalls will vary each day ranging from eight on the quietest days to 16 per day on Saturday 19th and Sunday 20th December. Jewellery, home baking, pizzas, crepes, cordials, dairy products, toffee and pottery to name but a few, will be among the products being offered for sale this week. “Whether it’s fashionable clothes, jewellery, food or toys, you must visit Tralee this Festive Season. Late Night Shopping is now in full swing and remember, many shops will be open late for the coming week to cater for the demand for quality gifts,” said John Drummey. John wished all members of Tralee Chamber Alliance and their families a merry Christmas and prosperous 2016. 32

CHRISTMAS IN TRALEE

CHRISTMAS by Jimmy Lucey

A yellow crescent Moon in a dark blue sky. A firey Star shifting through the heavens. No need to ask the Ancients twice they knew and followed. Wandering alone through the mystic, mounded sands of their desert domain they came together at an unearthly Oasis and grumping camels and parched men gulped deep of the cool, reviving waters. They refilled their bulging goat skins and the hot, dusty journey continued until the night they came to a hill-side village called Bethlehemthere the steering Star stopped. They knew as God knew why it stopped. And when they glimpsed His new-born face, the man and the womanthey knew for certain.

MERCY MOUNTHAWK STAFF RAISE OVER €2000 IN ANNUAL CHRISTMAS STAFF RAFFLE.

The staff of Mercy Mounthawk held their annual Christmas raffle raising a total of just over €2000 last Friday. The raffle raised badly need funds for Recovery Haven, Adapt, KACS (Kerry Adolescant Counselling Services) and Tralee Soup Kitchen. Prizes of hampers and an opportunity to ‘spin the wheel’ were among the 45 given out. “The school is, as every year, immensely grateful to local businesses who donated so generously to the prizes” – Deputy Principal, Pat Fleming, “The draw requires a great effort from the team in the office who run this every year”.

DAITHÍ - ONE MAN’S JOURNEY INTO THE EXTREME

Daithí Ó Murchú is a 55 year old master athlete originally from Co. Limerick. Earlier this year, he braved some of the harshest conditions the planet offers in what was one of the biggest challenges of his life. The Likeys 6633 Ultra race is a true Arctic experience! With participants battling the most extreme weather conditions, the race can be described as the toughest, coldest and windiest ultra-marathon in the world. On taking this challenge, Daithí was aware that only 11 people had ever completed the course and that the race had a failure rate of 99.97%. In a revealing new documentary, Irish TV follows Daithí as he prepares for this ultramarathon. The documentary is produced and directed by well known Kerry native Brian Hurley who heads up Irish TV Munster from his base in Kerry Technology Park. We join Daithí at the Irish Sports Institute, running in the park and at the gym, before seeing him battle average temperatures of minus 30 degrees celsius from Eagle Plains, Yukon, to the banks of the Arctic Ocean at Tuktoyaktuk. The race covers 566km of some of the world’s harshest terrain and climate conditions, and out of the thousands that ever attempted this race, very few finished. Daithí’s aim is to become the first Irish person ever to complete the full 566km distance in less than eight days. Daithí documents some of the most challenging and scenic parts of his journey. On returning to Ireland, he recalls to Irish TV this epic journey of self-discovery and how all the preparation in the world would not have covered the reality of how tough this race really is. Reflecting on the extreme nature of the course, Daithí commented, “My mother, who allowed me to run that first race at three years of age, what would she say if she were alive today?” Will Daithí break the record and become the first Irish person to complete the race? What kind of an impact will the expedition have on Daithí himself? All will be revealed in this hour-long documentary special, Daithí, to be broadcast on Ireland’s only international TV station, Irish TV. See this incredible voyage of discovery, Christmas night at 10pm, on Sky channel 191, all Free to Air boxes, Freesat 400, Eircom’s eVision 191 and online at www.irishtv.ie Tune into ‘Daithí’ on Christmas Day at 10pm on Irish TV SKY 191 Watch ‘Daithí’ promo here: http://bit.ly/1O3bCIl 34

FESTIVE FOOD FAIR WEEKEND AT MANOR WEST

Manor West was buzzing with a fantastic Christmas atmosphere all weekend as The Taste of Tralee Food Fair returned for another extremely successful weekend on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th of November. The event organized in conjunction with Taste Kerry which showcases the massive amount of talent and creativity of local producers. On the busy mall, the artisan producers had the opportunity to engage with a wider audience and promote their top quality goods. With a wide variety of quality locally produced goods to choose from, visitors to the shopping centre were spoiled for choice with an array of tasty treats to sample and purchase. The delicious crepes from Crème de la Crepe went down a very popular treat at the weekend with shoppers in the mall. And not forgetting the ever popular Carlos & his scrumptious Paella which always fills the shopping centre with a beautiful aroma. Regular visitors to Manor West such as O’Donnells Bakery, Rolf’s Fine Foods, Harty’s Jellys, Milseoige, not to mention the refreshing juices & cordials from Full Circle were also here this weekend displaying their full range of products to all the Christmas shoppers. Kids’ favorite cartoon characters Mickey & Minnie Mouse as well as the ever popular Ana & Elsa were here all weekend to keep the kids well entertained which created a fantastic family feel about the whole weekend as people were out and about picking up some Christmas shopping. Radio Kerry were also here on Saturday with Francis Jones broadcasting live from 11-2pm. Centre Manager Derek Rusk said: “We’ve had another fantastic weekend here in Manor West for both the producers and customers alike. As well as that it gives customers to the shopping centre the opportunity to taste some of the wide range of fabulous products that are on display. Christmas is such an exciting time here at Manor West, Santa is here in his throne, the Christmas songs are on, the decorations are up and everybody is out & about enjoying the festive atmosphere.” Manor West are looking forward to another busy week in the shopping centre in the final run up to Christmas. ARE YOU UP FOR THE CHRISTMAS DAY SWIM IN FENIT?

Seasoned and enthusiastic Christmas Day swimmer, Billy Ryle is cordially inviting the thousands of people, who will be driving to swims at venues all over the county, either as participants or spectators, to get fully behind the “Never Ever Drink and Drive” campaign of the Road Safety Authority (RSA), www.rsa.ie. A determined effort by adventure loving people to remain alcohol free while driving to and from the traditional dip will represent a powerful proactive statement in support of the RSA’s road safety campaign. Resist the temptation to drink alcoholic before leaving home for the swim. By all means, avail of the hot refreshments at the swim venue but stick to the non-alcoholic drinks if you are driving home. Abstaining from the mulled wine and hot whiskey when you emerge from the freezing water may test your willpower, but it’s important to do so if you’re getting behind the wheel. The Christmas Day swim is all about safely celebrating a special day with a plunge into the icy water. It’s a day to enjoy the wonderful atmosphere and giddy anticipation as you line up for the charge to the water. You can make a huge personal contribution to the “Never Ever Drink and Drive” campaign of the RSA and still stay warm without alcohol by following a few simple swim survival tips:• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • 42

Enjoy a non-alcoholic hot drink before leaving home Put on your bathing togs under you clothes at home Fill a hot water bottle with warm, not boiling, water Wrap your towels around it and place it in your sports bag Wear light layers of clothing under a jacket rather than too many heavy garments. A hat is vital as most body heat is lost by head exposure to the elements Gradually remove the layers of clothing as swim time approaches Keep your clothes warm and dry in your sports bag during the swim Retain as much body heat as possible before lining up for the charge into the sea Be aware that you are plunging into very cold water, so get in, get out, get warm Dry off thoroughly and change into warm clothes immediately after the swim Pour the warm water in the hot water bottle over your fingers and toes to restore circulation Avail of the hot drinks – non-alcoholic if you’re driving home - provided at the venue Take a warm shower or bath after returning home, if you still feel cold Now enjoy whatever beverage you fancy from the comfort of home TRALEE ADVERTISER

Bexblah Fitness! HELLO EVERYONE! HOPE YOU’RE ALL HAVING A GREAT WEEK, WHO ELSE IS FINDING IT HARD NOT TO FALL OFF THE FITNESS TRAIL THIS MONTH? Yes, it’s Christmas. Yes, you might have 7 different nights out with 50 different people you haven’t seen in years, and yes you might have one(or 4) too many. It’s Christmas it happens. What is very important, is that you have some sort of fitness balance and you don’t go into, “feck it I’ll start in January” mode. Here are my top tips to ensure that doesn’t happen…

Plan your “big nights”: It’s Christmas afterall. You know you’re going to be going hard and do every single one of those 12 pubs, and Jesus, John is feckin home from Oz after two years next Tuesday so we’ll have to hit the pub then, and we all know it’s just plain rude not to go out St Stephen’s night. So, pick your “big nights”, and stick to them. During the day before them stay hydrated, eat a little better(1 pack of taytos instead of 10), and try to get some form of a workout in, 20 mins HIIT cardio, a walk with the dog, ANYTHING. Stay active: Do not, I repeat, Do NOT, walk out of the gym(leave behind your exercise regime) on the 19th and return on the second of JANUARY… well you can but 1) The gym will be packed the second of January and 2) You will not thank yourself, trust me. We all know it’s Christmas, and yes you don’t have to go to the gym for 2 hours everyday, no one is asking you to, BUT, that doesn’t mean you can lie on the couch with a can of roses for 2 weeks, get out, walk the dog, do a few squats, a workout video on YouTube, go ice skating, anything to keep active at least 3 times a week. It’s not much and you will thank yourself in January when everyone is starting their new lettuce diets and freaking out that bikini season(lol Ireland) is only a few months away! HYDRATE: WATER WATER WATER. The least you can do in between the 12 pubs and mulled wine is drink AT LEAST 2 litres of water a day. It will help your body, skin, and energy levels. Dehydration is pretty on nobody. Don’t wait ‘til January: ‘Ah sure Mary it’s the 19th now, practically January we’ll start then”... NO MARY. If you have that mindset you will 1) Eat yourself into a food baby, 2) Put off starting in January ‘til February(Sure isn’t it Women’s Christmas the 11th), 3) Put on lots on unwanted weight. I’m not saying you should start a gym tomorrow and skip out on Christmas dinner, but you can make on conscious effort to not eat a 20 pack box of cheese and onion taytos whilst dreaming of the tin of celebrations for dessert after downing a good two bottles of wine since yesterday. And I know it’s Christmas and I know it’s a time for fun, but that doesn’t mean you’ve to let yourself go like kid in a candy store. If you have a little too much one day, balance it out by watching what you eat the next day, it’s all about moderation. I hope you enjoyed my light hearted tips on how to not completely lose the run of yourself this Christmas, but if you do… You better have a kick ass plan for January, next summer is going to be ALL about the fit toned gym bodies with amazing bums, just remember that before you eat that third helping of Christmas pudding! I also have a kick ass plan and a possible guest writer(no one famous or anything, no really he’s not) starting in 2016, so watch out for that!

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME AT THE PEARLY GATES..

Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. ‘In honour of this holy season’ Saint Peter said, ‘You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven.’ The Englishman fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. ‘It’s a candle’, he said. ‘You may pass through the pearly gates’ Saint Peter said. The Scotsman reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, ‘They’re bells.’ Saint Peter said ‘You may pass through the pearly gates’. The Irishman started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women’s underwear St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, ‘And just what do those symbolize?’ The paddy replied, ‘These are Carols.’

IT WAS CHRISTMAS DAY.....

and the judge was in a merry mood as he asked the prisoner,”What are you charged with?” “Doing my Christmas shopping early”, replied the defendant. “That’s no offense”, said the judge. “How early were you doing this shopping?” “Before the store opened.”

CHRISTMAS GIFT TO A FRIEND...

Me: “Hello, is this the Police?” Police: “Yes. What do you want?” Me: “I’m calling to report about my neighbor Billy Jones! He is hiding marijuana inside logs of firewood in his woodshed” Police:”Thank you very much for the call, sir.” The next day, the Police descend upon Billy’s 48

house. They search the woodshed where the firewood is kept. Using axes, they split open every piece of wood, but find no marijuana. They swore at Billy and left his property. Soon after they leave the phone rings at Billy’s house: Me: “Hey, Billy! Did the Police come?” Billy: “Yeah!” Me: “Did they chop your firewood?” Billy: “Yep.” Me: “Merry Christmas, Buddy!”

GUY JOINS THE ARMY...

... but they are out of bayonets and ammo. They tell him to run into battle yelling “Bangitty bangitty bang!!! “Stabbity stabbity stab!” Much to his surprise, enemy soldiers are dropping all around him. Then, this really big enemy comes over the hill. The guy yells, “Bangitty bangitty bang!!! “Stabbity stabbity stab!”, but the enemy keeps advancing and mows him down. As the enemy walks over him, he hears him shout, “Tankitty tankitty tank!”

A BALDING WHITE HAIRED MAN WALKS INTO A JEWELRY STORE WITH A BEAUTIFUL MUCH YOUNGER GAL AT HIS SIDE...

He told the jeweller he was looking for a special ring for his girlfriend. The jeweller looked through his stock and brought out a $5,000 ring. The man said, ‘No, I’d like to see something more special.’ At that statement, the jeweler went to his special stock and brought another ring over. ‘Here’s a stunning ring at only $40,000the jeweler said. The lady’s eyes sparkled and her whole body trembled with excitement. The old man seeing this said, ‘We’ll take it.’ The jeweler asked how payment would be made and the man stated, ‘By check. I know you need to make sure my check is good, so I’ll write it now and you can call the bank Monday to verify the funds; I’ll pick the ring up Monday afternoon.’ On Monday morning, the jeweller angrily phoned the old man and said ‘Sir...There’s no money in that account. ‘’I know,’ said the old man...’But let me tell you about my weekend.’ Call Chris or Colette Tel: 066 7122982 or e-mail : traleeadvertiser@gmail.com

MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS IRELAND ENCOURAGES CHILDREN IN COUNTY KERRY TO KEEP UP THE READING AS MS READATHON 2015 Ava Battles, Chief Executive, MS Ireland comments: “Children and their teachers in schools all around the country have been hugely supportive of MS Readathon 2015 and it is great to see donations coming in after all of their efforts. Funds raised in each region will directly support people with Multiple Sclerosis locally. We are encouraging young readers to keep it up after a great burst during reading month. Christmas is a good time to immerse yourself in books and there are many great books for children by Irish authors to enjoy.” MS Ireland’s 2015 survey of grown up readers revealed that 98 per cent of us love books and 96 per cent would like to make more time for reading. 4 in 10 of us read to escape and another 4 in 10 read mainly to relax. 17 per cent read to expand their knowledge. 6 in 10 pick up another book immediately after finishing one. Recommendations from family or friends are the biggest influence on what we read for one third, the author is a key factor for 30 per cent, while the mood of a book is most influential for 28 per cent. Ireland’s favourite place to read is in bed (60 per cent) with the couch in second place (26 per cent) and public transport ranking third (6 per cent). Irish author Marisa Mackle makes sense of this: “The best thing about reading is that you can travel the world and even go back in time without having to get out of bed!” More than 9,000 people have MS in Ireland, with thousands more family members affected. Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease, the most common disabling neurological condition affecting young adults in Ireland. MS is usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40. There is no known cause or cure for MS. Each year, Irish authors and illustrators support MS Readathon including Sarah Webb, Cecelia Ahern, Oisin McGann, Claudia Carroll, Marisa Mackle, Nicola Pierce, Judi Curtin, Sheila O’Flanagan and Sarah Bowie, providing inspirational advice and useful tips for young readers and budding writers. They are urging Irish children to explore new worlds through reading. Irish authors on reading: “Reading is the perfect way to get lost in your imagination. My favorite books growing up were the famous five series by Enid Blyton, Sweet Valley Twins and the Babysitters Club. Two books that impacted me the most were ‘Under the Hawthorn Tree’ by Marita Conlon McKenna and ‘The Best Little Girl in the World’ by Steven Levenkron.” Cecilia Ahern “Books are my best friends, my dear companions. They let me step outside my own world for a while and see the world though someone else’s eyes… I re-read children’s books all the time. I love ‘The Red Tree’, a picture book for all ages by Shaun Tan as it makes me think about what is important in life. I also love ‘Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret’ by Judy Blume as it reminds me what if feels like to be a teenager.” Irish childrens’ author Sarah Webb “There’s nothing like taking a quiet hour to dip into a book that’s gripping you and disappearing into a whole new world. It’s my ‘me’ time …books are my bag. I’d never leave the house without a book to hand.” Claudia Carroll “Reading is a way of experiencing life from a different point of view.” Sheila O’Flanagan “Reading is…VITAL. It allows the imagination to realise that there are no limits, and storytelling helps us grow. Reading is something we can do all by ourselves - a brilliant and useful guilty pleasure.” Pauline McLynn

LETTER TO THE EDITOR from Ray Jordan, CEO

GORTA-SELF HELP AFRICA December 2015

Dear Sir/Madam, through your pages can I express my sincere ‘thanks’ on behalf of Gorta-Self Help Africa all of our friends and supporters in Kerry for their generous support in the past year. Our work amongst some of Africa’s poorest people is only possible as a result of the kindness and generosity of people at home here in Ireland. Agriculture remains the most affective and lasting way to lift people out of extreme poverty in sub-Saharan Africa, and as a result of your support and goodwill we are able to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of rural families, each year. It has been an exciting and eventful year for us – and the first full year since Gorta-Self Help Africa merged our organisations. By combining our resources we are able to reach a record number of people, and deliver greater impact than ever before, in 2015. In the year just ending we estimate that by supporting rural farming households to grow more, earn more, establish smallenterprises, and access new markets for their crops we have helped, with your kindness, to improve the lives of more than 1.8 million people. Again, on behalf of all at Gorta-Self Help Africa can I again say a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to the people in Kerry who made this a ‘happy Christmas’ for so many people, who can look forward to the holiday season with hope and optimism for the future. With kind regards and best wishes, Ray Jordan, CEO Gorta-Self Help Africa www.selfhelpafrica.org 52

KERRY’S 120 HACKNEY DRIVERS CAN NOW APPLY TO JOIN THE HAILO NETWORK Kerry’s 120 hackney drivers are now able to join the Hailo network, as Hailo announces that it is extending its current service and is recruiting regional SPSV hackney drivers to supplement its nationwide service. The extension of the service to local SPSV drivers will help service local demand by utilising the many benefits of the Hailo Network. Hailo offers nationwide service and all of Kerry’s SPSV drivers can now sign up to Hailo in Ireland, including taxi, hackney and limousine drivers. Hailo has recorded over 10 million passenger journeys across the country since beginning operations three years ago. This year alone, Hailo drivers will clock up 5 million journeys, with the service supporting up to 45,000 passengers nationwide every day. Kerry’s 467 SPSV drivers are also set to benefit from the launch of HailoPay, a payment solution that will allow drivers accept mobile payments. HailoPay is now live and is a completely free service for both passengers and drivers that is separate to the Hailo app. HailoPay is a simple, safe and secure mobile payment gateway for passengers to pay for taxi journeys hailed off the street. It means that passengers can easily pay for their taxi and hackney journeys via card and don’t have to divert their journeys via a cashpoint. For drivers, they have a quick and elegant payment solution and no longer have to install bulky or expensive card reading machines. HailoPay allows passengers to use their smartphone to pay for the journey with a credit or debit card by visiting a secure site (hailopay.com), entering their driver’s licence number and confirming the payment amount. There is no need to hand over a card or mobile device, meaning a passenger’s possessions and card details remain secure. Upon completing the payment, the driver receives a notification and the passenger receives a receipt on their device, which can be sent via email. Tim Arnold, Hailo Ireland’s General Manager said: “We are calling on SPSV drivers across Ireland, including Kerry’s 120 hackney drivers, to get in touch if they are interested in joining the Hailo Network. Hailo is part of a movement that wants innovation and regulation in Ireland’s SPSV industry, and convenience and safety for our passengers. Hailo customers can pre book jobs, make desktop bookings and pay with card or cash. Our drivers go through some of the most stringent background and local knowledge tests in the world. Hailo plays by the regulatory rules, and always operates on the side of the passenger. With this philosophy, we believe we can continue to lead the taxi market in Ireland, and position for further rapid growth across the country.” Pictured at Andrew Pinnington, CEO of Hailo and Tim Arnold Hailo Ireland’s General Manager

ARTHUR J. SPRING ASKS COUNCIL FOR ADDITIONAL FREE PARKING TO BENEFIT SHOPPERS & TRADERS

Labour TD. Arthur J Spring believes that there is a need to increase the hours of free parking in Tralee in response to the recent bad weather. Deputy Spring stated,”Tralee has its own individual free parking policy for the Christmas period. I strongly welcome this traditional pre-Christmas free parking period as it incentivises people to shop in the town. However the recent bad weather which has been at its worst at the weekends and the continuous weather warnings have served as deterrents to shoppers.” “Local traders in the Tralee have informed me that footfall is down. I am asking that Kerry County Council considers increasing the hours of free parking in Tralee for the rest of the free parking period as an act of goodwill to the shoppers and traders and in response to the large rain fall on the weekends. The rain fall on the previous Saturdays has prevented people from doing their Christmas shopping and is the major contributor to the reduction in footfall. The attraction of the additional free parking hours will add to the shopping experience and make Tralee a more attractive destination for Christmas shopping and the New Year sales.”

WHY TAKE SUPPLEMENTS?

Most surveys of eating habits conducted since the 1980’s show that even people who claim to eat a good balanced diet still fall short of optimum levels of essential vitamins and minerals. Why, you may wonder does a good diet not contain all the vitamin and minerals we need for health? Studies show us that nutrient levels in food are falling. Refining food [turning brown into white] also strips away valuable nutrients. The result of poor intake of nutrients leads to a poor state of health. Most people put up with feeling “all right”, and accept that they are prone to regular colds, have low energy, poor digestion, low moods and much more. Ensure your diet is as rich in nutrients as it can possibly be. This along with increased intake of certain vitamin and minerals can boost immunity, increase energy and promote a healthy life. Some of the supplements to consider include: OLIVE LEAF COMPLEX: a powerful antioxidant, available in liquid or capsule. It also contains immune boosting properties. A GOOD QUALITY MULTIVITAMIN: ensure that your choice contains adequate levels to suit your specific needs. Solo Multi-fifty is packed with high potency nutrients. Always ask in store for professional advice.

Did you know: Smoking serious depletes you Vitamin C levels, so supplementation is essential

DIGESTIVE ENZYME: gut health is a huge part of our immune system so keeping it healthy and in balance is key to good health. One capsule before each meal will help ensure this. ANTIOXIDANTS: these are nutrients that help the body from damage. While too much booze, smoking and poor diet harm the body, damage is also caused by everyday activities such as breathing polluted air, digesting food and fighting infection. The good news is that the body has an inbuilt repair system but needs particular nutrients such as Vitamin A, C, E, Co-Enzyme Q10 and Betacarotene to help eliminate toxins. All of these are available in store. Always ask us for advice to ensure your choice is the correct one for you. Until next time, stay healthy.

HEALTHY RECIPES for 2015

IT’S ALL ABOUT TIMING !! This is the last page of this year! I do hope ye all enjoyed the recipes over the last year and thanks to all of you for the emails . I hope our Christmas goes well and that ye all enjoy it and have a safe one. Time spent making a time plan for Christmas Eve and Christmas day is time well-spent. Not only does it help in organizing the cooking, it also organizes the mind and it is astonishing how many times forgotten jobs are picked up when writing a time plan. Below is a time plan laying out the most important jobs which can then be adjusted to fit with your menu. Don’t forget to build time for you into the time plan. Time to get ready, or have a cup of tea is as important as a perfectly cooked dinner.

Christmas Eve

The day is getting closer and the heat is on. Jobs done on Christmas Eve will take the pressure off Christmas Day. • Set the table. A great way to make sure you have everything. • Sort all the cooking and serving dishes, the glasses, silverware and napkins for the dinner. • Put white wines and Champagne to chill. • Remove all frozen foods from the freezer. • Parboil the potatoes and parsnips for 15 mins, cool and keep refrigerated. • Trim the Brussels Sprouts and refrigerate.. • Stuff the turkey. • Get to bed at a reasonable time, always helps to start Christmas Day refreshed and well rested.

Woo hoo, it’s Christmas Day!

With all your food planning and preparation, you’ll be able to enjoy a stress free Christmas Dinner. Don’t forget to delegate - everyone can help out in some way - and most importantly enjoy! Here’s our step-bystep plan for the day - it’s based on eating at 2pm but you can easily adjust for the time you want to eat.

Time Plan

9.30am - Preheat oven to the recommended cooking temperature 10.00am - Start cooking the turkey 10.30am - Take the already prepared starters, vegetables and herbs out of the fridge to bring to room temperature 11am - Start steaming the Christmas puddings 1.15pm - Heat enough vegetable or olive oil to cover the bottom of a roasting tin. Add the parboiled potatoes to the hot oil - and add in a bit of the juices from the meat roasting tin (saving most for the gravy). Allow the potatoes to cook for around 40-45 minutes. Plus start to cook the parsnips and any other root vegetables. 1.30pm - Check the turkey is cooked and remove from the oven. Cover it in foil and leave to rest in a warm place. Start cooking the rest of vegetables - such as brussels sprouts and glazed carrots. Using the meat roasting tin, make the gravy. 1.45pm - Plate up the starter 1.50pm - Carve the turkey and place everything into warmed serving dishes 2.00pm - Time to sit down to eat - enjoy

12 YEAR OLD FROM KERRY SCOOPS NATIONAL AWARD FOR HER VIDEO “SOMEONE LIKE ME” CELEBRATING HER DISABILITY

Minister of State for New Communities, Culture, Equality and Drugs Strategy Aodhán Ó Ríordáin today presented 12 year old Bríd Courtney from Ardfert Co Kerry with a prestigious national award for her inspirational essay video “ Someone Like Me”. The award was presented at a special ceremony held in Farmleigh House in Dublin. mThe awards saw primary school students from around the country arrive at Farmleigh House as part of a national essay competition hosted by the Department of Justice and Equality to promote positive attitudes towards disability in primary schools. The competition was entitled ‘Someone Like Me’. The students in attendance were shortlisted for their entries, which saw a mix of written and video essays, with many showcasing their own disabilities or those of their friends and families, all with a common theme of celebration. Minister of State for New Communities, Culture, Equality and Drugs Strategy Aodhán Ó Ríordáin commented “ I am absolutely delighted to meet each and every one of today’s finalists and present them with their award. I understand from the judges that the quality of the entries has been exceptional and the enthusiasm of the schools, teachers and students wonderful. The primary schools competition is an excellent opportunity for the youngest members of society to have a carefully thought out conversation around disabilities against the backdrop of the classroom. It is so important to drive this agenda from a young age and teach children to respect themselves and how unique they are and also to respect the uniqueness of the people around them. Brid is a thoroughly inspiring winner and her entry was excellent”. The Judging panel for the competition included Brent Pope, rugby analyst and author of many children’s books including Woody the Whale, The Wheezing Wolf, Bones, Arnold The Anteater and The Adventures of Herbie. He joined acclaimed Galway children’s author Deirdre Sullivan and a range of other judges to choose the national winner. “I was delighted to act as a judge for the competition and was really drawn to the theme of Someone Like Me. I am no stranger to feeling different and really believe it is so important that we celebrate our uniqueness, what sets us apart. Writing and expressing ourselves is a terrific way to do this and I spent a lot of time reviewing the entries. I was really blown away by the standard of the essays and the story many of them were telling. I absolutely loved Bríd’s video the moment I saw it, she is a very deserving winner”. Commented Brent Pope ABOUT BRÍD COURTNEY Bríd lives with her parents, Deirdre and Brendan, and siblings Ailbhe, Eoghan, Iarla and Darragh in Ardfert Co. Kerry. An incredibly creative young lady, Brid is an award winning poet and music aficionado with a smile that lightens every heart of those that are lucky enough to meet her. On receiving the letter from the Department of Justice and Equality, principal Betty Stack, immediately asked Brid and 6th class if they would like to participate. The response was overwhelmingly in favour of submitting to the competition. Such has been the level of inclusivity that her classmates have always displayed; Ardfert N.S. had plenty of footage detailing Brid’s involvement at school going back several years. Sixth class then wrote a script and filmed a few extra sequences to tie all the different events together. The children and staff feel the film is not only a unique way of celebrating the spirit of inclusivity but also reflects on Brid’s time at Ardfert N.S., and gives the opportunity to appreciate and learn values that will stand them all in good stead in the years ahead.

MRS BROWN’S BOYS ALL THE RAGE TO BE CHRISTMAS DAY UK TOP TV PROGRAMME

Now Evens from 5/4 as The Queen’s Speech eased to 7/2 BoyleSports can report that it’s Brendan O’Carroll’s Mrs Brown’s Boys that punters believe will be the Top Christmas Day programme viewed in the UK. Available at 5/4 on Tuesday morning, Mrs Brown’s Boys’ Christmas Special is now Evens to dethrone The Queen’s Speech, which will be shown on ITV and BBC One, from the top spot that it reached in 2014 with a combined audience of 7.82 million. As a result of the plunge on Mrs Brown’s Boys, The Queen’s Speech has been eased out to 7/2 from 3/1 alongside Downton Abbey. EastEnders is next in the betting at 5/1 with the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special available at 12/1. Outsiders to land the most viewers on Christmas Day are soaps Coronation Street (16/1) and Emmerdale (50/1) whilst Doctor Who which had 6.34 million viewers in 2014 is priced at 25/1. Liam Glynn, BoyleSports’ spokesperson said: “One punter certainly has faith in Mrs Brown’s Boys Christmas Special having top viewership on Christmas Day in the UK and placed €600 on it on Tuesday morning alongside numerous bets that has seen it’s price clipped into Evens.” He added “Brendan O’Carroll’s Hit TV series is now a large five figure loser for the firm and judging by the demand on Tuesday, punters are certainly expecting the Christmas Special to dethrone The Queen’s Speech from the Number 1 spot – That’s Nice.”

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE.

The Word was the true light that enlightens all people; and he was coming into the world. No one has ever seen God; it is the only Son, who is nearest to the Father’s heart, who has made him known. Jn1:

Christmas reminds us that in God, the Creator and Lord of all, we have one who is a true Father to us all. He will always be there for us. He has sent his Son Jesus to us. It is wonderful that Christmas is so strong as a “family celebration”. So many people say things like: ‘It is all about children’; ‘Are you going home for Christmas?’; ‘Contact home for Christmas’. God bless all homes and families especially where there are young children. This Christmas we are mindful of families who have no homes or who could be made homeless in the New Year, – the homeless in Ireland, the millions of refugees leaving North Africa. It is so sad, especially where there are children. Christmas challenges us to respond to their plight. Christmas reveals to us that all people on earth are one great family, one family with God as Our Father. As you gaze on the new born Baby Jesus in the crib, see all people as your sisters and brothers. Jesus, whose first home was the stable in Bethlehem, dwells in every home. Under His loving care may we all live loving, gentle and contented lives. One day we will all be a family united together around God Our Father in heaven. People say Christmas is sad for the bereaved: often it turns out to be the opposite. Families have time to be together, to pause and remember the loved one who has died, to recall precious memories, and to support and comfort one another. And Jesus came into the world to open the door to eternal life. The bereaved often experience Christmas as hope and consolation. Be as generous as you can with the local charities and causes who fundraise at this time of year. Their voluntary service is so valuable, something to be proud of. Make time for the faith side of Christmas: sacred Christmas music on radio or T.V. ; EWTN; a Carol Service; the Nativity Play in National School; an afternoon visiting the beautiful cribs in local churches; read a spiritual Christmas article in a missionary magazine; each day spend a few quite minutes before the crib at home. Have Jesus at the centre of your Christmas. A happy and a peaceful Christmas to one and all. God bless all the people of the diocese of Kerry: young and old; healthy and sick; those for whom it is the happiest of years; those for whom it is the most difficult of years. God bless all who cannot journey home for Christmas. Thanks to everyone for your contribution to the life of your parish and of the diocese in the past year. Thank you for the way you live by faith, hope and love. In all our communities let us ensure that there is no one who is lonely or without a visitor this Christmas, nobody without a Christmas dinner or a lift to Mass. All around us there is so much that is good, thanks be to God.

LAUGHTER ....THE BEST MEDICINE ! PARKING TICKET I went to the supermarket today, and I was there for literally 5 minutes. When I came out there was a cop writing a parking ticket. So I went up to him and said, “Come on, buddy, how about giving a guy a break?” He ignored me and continued writing the ticket. So I called him a pencil-necked fat headed cop. He glared at me and started writing another ticket for worn tyres! So I then asked him if his psychiatrist makes him lie face down on the couch cause he’s so ugly. He finished the second ticket and put it on the windscreen with the first. Then he started writing a third ticket! This went on until he had placed 5 tickets on the windscreen .. the more I insulted him, the more tickets he wrote. I didn’t care. My car was parked around the corner.

Try it.” Two hours later Ho Chow calls again. “I do what you say and feel great, I be at work soon. You have a nice house too”

He tells him, “I tell everyone about this kid and what a moron he is. Every time he comes by I offer him two quarters OR a single dollar bill. He takes the quarters every time...never learns.” Right as they’re talking the kid walks by the window. The barber knocks and waves him in. The kid walks up and the barber offers him two quarters or a dollar bill. The kid takes the quarters and leaves. “You see that? Every single time! I feel sorry for our future.” says the barber. Curious, the customer chases the kid down and asks, “Why do you take the two quarters? You know one dollar is worth more, right?” “Of course I do, but the day I take the dollar, he’ll stop paying me”

TWO BLONDES WALK UP TO A BUS STOP...

The first blonde walks up to the bus and asks, “will this bus take me to the city centre?” The driver replies, “I’m afraid not.” The second blonde walks over, smiles sweetly and asks, “will it take me there?”

A farmer and his son go to the big city. They’ve lived in the country all their life, and they don’t really know the wonders that technological process has made possible. In the lobby of a tall skyscraper they see an elderly lady go into an elevator. “Dad, what is that shiny box the lady just went into?” The son asks his father. “I have no idea, my son.” The father says, as they both contemplate the now closed elevator doors.

A few seconds later the doors open again. This time a smoking-hot blonde gets off the elevator and walks past the two, winking at them as she goes. “Dad, what...” “Shut up. Take the tractor. Go home and get mother. Now!”

STAR WARS WILL SHOWCASE SCEILG MHICHÍL AND KERRY TO THE WORLD

The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Heather Humphreys TD, has today (Tuesday) said that the incredible beauty of Sceilg Mhichíl will be brought to an unrivalled global audience this week. Minister Humphreys was speaking ahead of the Irish premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which was partly filmed on Skellig Michael in 2014. Speaking today Minister Humphreys said: “This week, millions of film fans will be treated to the incredible beauty of Sceilg Mhichíl, as StarWars: The Force Awakens is released internationally. This is arguably the most eagerly anticipated film of all time and it is quite something to think that a remote part of South West Kerry is set to feature in it. “I am looking forward to seeing how Sceilg Mhichíl will feature on the big screen. The impact of this global exposure on our film and tourism sector is hard to quantify. There are of course limits on the number of people who can visit Sceilg Mhichíl every day, but the release of this film has the potential to give our already thriving tourism sector a major boost and bring many more people to these shores. “I would like once again thank all of those, especially the local people in Kerry, who made the shoot possible. The Star Wars shoot illustrated, once again, that Ireland is a fantastic location for major movie production. It also showed how, with the right safeguards in place, film making can work in harmony with our stunning natural environment.”

TORQUING CARS! HOW LONG WOULD YOU HAVE TO GRAFT TO BUY RONALDO’S FERRARI? CALCULATOR REVEALS THE NUMBER OF YEARS TO BUY TOP FOOTBALLERS’ CARS (AND HOURS FOR THEM TO BUY YOURS)

Many of us grow up wanting to be a professional footballer, and it’s no surprise when you compare how long it would take most of us to muster-up the cash for one of their cars. For instance, if you wanted to buy a LaFerrari like the one driven by Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo, the average Brit would have to work for 31 years to stump up the £847,000 required to purchase one. But if he wanted to turn up at the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in the UK’s favourite Ford Fiesta, he’ll be able to hand over the full asking price after just three hours of work on his £288,000 a week wage. This is all according to a new calculator launched by nationalnumbers. co.uk showcasing the ridiculously expensive vehicles driven by some of the world’s greatest footballers and how long it would take you to buy their car. Simply add your name, your current salary and the value of the car you own and the calculator crunches the numbers for how long it would take for you to be able to afford the same car the current Ballon d’Or winner, Ronaldo, and seven other football stars own. The figure make for pretty depressing reading, unless you’re a footballing superstar earning a six-figure weekly salary, of course. Take England captain Wayne Rooney, for example. He doesn’t even need to save up to buy his £150,000 Aston Martin Vanquish S. With a weekly salary of £260,000, he can buy one in a matter of days. But for Brits earning £27,600 a year — the UK average wage according to the latest stats from the ONS — it would take five years of labour to pull together the funds to stroll into a dealership to get the keys to one. Flip the tables and the Manchester United striker could pay for a mid-spec Ford Fiesta — the UK’s most bought car — in just 180 minutes, based on an asking price of £13,795. Carlos Tevez, formerly of West Ham, Manchester United and rivals City, currently drives a [now replaced] Audi R8 V10. On his wages at Argentine club Boca Juniors, he can afford to buy one a week. The average Brit will have to wait six years to afford one

FIAT TO TARGET DACIA BUYERS WITH NEW ‘VALUE’ TIPO FAMILY CAR - AS THEY RING THE CHANGES WITH 500 ICON

I’m told it will be heavily focused on price and value with the likes of Dacia buyers among the key targets. A senior executive told me they won’t necessarily be chasing Ford Focus or Volkswagen Golf owners with the new car. There is every possibility we will see a trio of hatch, saloon and estate - which would give the brand a major presence in the segment. Fiat’s arrival in a part of the market it hasn’t really had a car in for a long time should be good news for potential buyers as it could provide an option for those who might otherwise buy a secondhand car. The executive told me: “It will be priced as a ‘value car’. It will be all about value.” He did mention Dacia buyers as prime targets. The only problem is it may come too late for the 162-reg (from July) period next year as it looks like it will arrive ‘probably around August’. But right now Fiat is concentrating on its facelifted ‘iconic’ 500 city car , main picture, which has a lot more changes than meet the eye. While on the one hand Fiat was wary of revising something that has worked so well, it still managed to come up with 1,900 new components. It’s a tricky one but Fiat improved it without in any way altering the look or feel. And it remains a wonderful little drive. Even in the wind and rain on Monday, I had a great bit of fun with it around west Dublin. I thoroughly enjoyed the 0.9-litre Twin Air petrol version (yes it is tiny but can pump 105bhp) though its 1.2-litre 69bhp stablemate is the big seller with the 1.3-litre diesel accounting for 15pc of sales - a remarkable statistic in its own right. The engines are all that bit ‘greener’ as well. And there are seven airbags. It is easy to forget just how much fun this car can be. Despite the changes, the starting price is up just €50 (to €13,450). The front and rear bear most of the exterior changes with new bumpers and light clusters. The seats have been re-designed and the centre stack has been rearranged around the audio system. The latter has the company’s Uconnect infotainment system (there is a five-year subscription) but integrated TomTom satnav and DAB are options. There are three trim levels: Pop, Pop Star and Lounge. Steering wheel-mounted audio controls and USB/Aux-in ports are standard. You can personalise to your heart’s content with all sort of connectivity options and apps. The 500 has been a favourite even through the economic bad times so they are expecting 400 to buy one next year. There is a PCP deal which starts at €150 a month. And I’m sure there will be a PCP ‘value’ deal on the Tipo when it arrives too. Indo Motoring (Eddie Cunningham ) 68

TORQUING CARS! HOW TO DRIVE THROUGH FLOODS

While many cars will get through quite severe floods, there are a number of dangers. In addition to shorted-out electrics, there is a risk of the engine sucking in water which, being incompressible, will smash connecting rods, pistons and even crankshafts. If the water is fastmoving, there is also a risk that the car could be carried off into deeper flood water with you inside. SO WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN YOU MEET A FLOOD?

First things first, you should try to avoid it, but if you can’t, you should make sure there is not more than six inches of standing water or four inches of moving water. Parking up and watching other cars and trucks negotiate the flood can be a good way of checking to see how deep it is. In particular look out for hidden dips and gullies where the water could suddenly get deeper. If you decide to go through, stay on the crown of the road where possible and crawl through the water very slowly in first gear. Keep the engine revs up (by slipping the clutch if necessary) to avoid water entering the exhaust pipe. Also avoid the temptation to make a quick exit, as going at speed can push water into the engine. Even drivers of large 4x4s should take care. Experts at Land Rover advise entering the water slowly (about 1-2mph), before accelerating to about 3-4mph. This creates a bow wave in front of the vehicle, which will create a depression in the engine bay and keep the air intake clear of water. However, this technique won’t work with old, beam-axled 4x4s, as the water tends to hit the front axle beam and squirt straight into the engine bay. Avoid going too fast into even quite shallow puddles as that can lead to aquaplaning, where the front tyres will no longer steer the car and you lose control. It is also inconsiderate and illegal to soak pedestrians. When you emerge from the water, dry the brakes by using them gently, and if there were leaves in the water, check the radiator for blockages. Another thing to watch out for is the lunatics coming the other way. You might be observing all the best advice, but big 4x4s or trucks racing though in the opposite direction can create such bow waves they drown your car. If the worst happens and your car stops, leave the bonnet closed to avoid any further water ingress, climb out, lock the car and wade to dry land. In direst emergencies, you could try winding the car out by operating the starter in first or reverse gear but few starter motors will stand that sort of punishment so don’t rely on it.

Top tips for coping with floods • Make sure there is not more than six inches of standing water or four inches of moving water • Enter the water at 1-2mph • Accelerate up to 3-4mph to create a bow wave and keep water out of the engine • Stay in first gear and keep the revs up • Stay on the crown of the road • When you emerge from the water, dry the brakes by using them gently • Where possible, find another route that will allow you to avoid the flood altogether

The makeover of Toyota, the largest car group, under chief executive Akio Toyoda is facing one of its biggest tests with the launch of the new Prius. Analysts warn that the remodelling of the hybrid car - which has been a pioneer in fuel-saving technology since its 1997 debut - could not have had worse timing. With Brent crude breaching the $40-a-barrel mark for the first time since February 2009, fuel-hungry sports utility vehicles are back in vogue, softening consumer demand for fuelefficient smaller cars. “Toyota wants to make hybrids, not just the de facto standard in Japan but also overseas,” said Masahiro Akita, car analyst at Credit Suisse. “There is concern about whether the new Prius will sell well outside Japan against the headwind of lower oil prices.” Executives boast that the fourth-generation Prius, which went on sale in Japan yesterday, is a testimony to Mr Toyoda’s attempt to build funkier, fun-to-drive cars by fundamentally reviewing the way the company manufactures and designs its vehicles Mitsuhisa Kato, Toyota executive vice-president, said: “This Prius is the beginning of an ongoing, long challenge to develop ever better cars.” The Japanese carmaker said it was aiming for annual global sales of up to 350,000 Prius vehicles, of which roughly 144,000 units are expected to be sold in Japan. The company has already received pre-orders for about 60,000 vehicles, with consumers likely to wait up to five months for the cars to arrive. While scepticism was also strong when the Prius first hit the market in 1997, the carmaker has since sold more than 8m units of gasoline-electric hybrids. The segment, including plug-in hybrids, accounted for about 14 per cent of its car and truck sales last year, and nearly half of its sales at home. But consumers now have a wider option of advanced, eco-friendly cars including electric vehicles by Tesla and Nissan as well as a fuel-cell vehicle launched by Toyota. Diesel vehicles were also popular before the emissions scandal at Volkswagen. The new Prius achieves mileage of 40.8 kilometres per litre under Japanese tests, a 20 per cent improvement on the current model. However, Mr Kato says that fuel-saving technology is no longer the only selling point for the Prius. The hybrid is the first model to adopt revamped vehicle platforms and components, which are expected to cover half of Toyota’s vehicles by 2020. Analysts say the project, called Toyota New Global Architecture, is an attempt to redefine the spine of its production system to meet global trends for quality, cheaper cars. Toyota claims that the system will cut development costs by 20 per cent through a sharing of parts and platforms across continents. For the new Prius body, engineers used sturdy but lighter steel sheets for the body and lowered the centre of gravity for more precise and nimble steering, while engine noise and the door’s closing sound are reduced. But even Mr Kato appears to be less confident on whether the emotional appeal of the redesigned Prius will override the economics of buying a hybrid car during an era of cheap oil prices. “We are confident, but at the same time we are worried, since consumers are different [OVERSEAS],” he said. The Prius, which has a starting price of €31,450 in Ireland should go on sale early in 2016. (Financial Times )

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR CAN YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST 3 MONTHS OF THE SPORTING YEAR? This is the time when we cast our minds back over the sporting year. Some things will spring to mind straight away and we will have forgotten others. Once again it was a great year in Kerry with a huge variety of sports teams and individuals being successful. Everyone cannot win, and for most the fact that we came up just short in the race for Sam will be a little downer. However the great thing in sport for the most part is that there is always another year. And for many once the Christmas dinner is over thoughts turn to the coming season. At this stage we also take a moment to remember those who have passed away in the last 12 months. I am not going to begin naming them as I will forget someone. However each and every one of their contributions to sport in Kerry were important and are rightly remembered whether it was at the highest level or at club level. May they enjoy their rewards in the great sports stadium in the sky. THE FIRST 3 MONTHS – A VERY BRIEF LOOK BACK: (We will cover the remaining 9 months of 2015 in our first edition of the New Year on January 7th). January: Darragh O’Shea was named Kerry u21 manager. In cycling the Moda Kingdom Endurance Team was launched and had great success throughout the season. Motorsport in Kerry is at an all -time high and Noel O’Sullivan Jr joined Paul Nagle on the International front. Later on Rob Duggan also made his WRC debut and won the Billy Coleman Award. Austin Stacks were on a roll on and off the field and the Rory Kirby produced 2014 A Rockumentary won a PPI Award for the club. Ballybunion Golf Club was named as the host club for the prestigious Jacques Leglise Trophy. Then Kerry hurling manager Eamon Kelly made a passionate call to Kerry hurlers to put their shoulders to the wheel and what a success that turned out to be. Kerry began their League campaign missing 7 regulars. International soccer returned to Kerry with Killarney Celtic and Listowel Celtic hosting games between the Irish u15’s and their Scottish counterparts. John Sugrue took over as South Kerry’s senior manager with Peter Keane taking to the helm at Killarney Legion – did they have any inkling how the year would turn out? Ardfert, who took up the option to go senior for the year, had a huge 1 point win over St Peter’s Warrenpoint in the Intermediate semi-final. Valentia Young Islanders showed that it’s not always about the big clubs as they won the Munster Junior B Championship. February: Brosna and Ardfert joined the long and illustrious list of club All Ireland winners when both were victorious on St Valentine’s Day in Croke Park. Brendan Moloney completed a transfer deadline day move to Northampton Town. Tralee Harriers Claire Fitzgerald took two medals at the GloHealth

Indoor Games. Dan Brassil and Feel My Pulse took the coursing world by storm with triple success. Long serving servant to Kerry hurling Tom Murnane called it a day. Kerry approached to enter the U17 League of Ireland and while sadly it didn’t happen then the ironic thing is that as I write this the FAI are about to make a decision on next season with both the KDL and Tralee Dynamos having applications before the Board. St Mary’s were crowned Women’s Division 1 League Champions. Aquablue’s Sean McKenna took the Lacey Cup back to Dublin with Moda’s John Brosnan the first Kerry rider home in 4th. March: Mercy Mounthawk won the 19B Girls Senior Schools League All Ireland winning the first senior title in the 15 year history of the school. Leibherr won the All Ireland Inter Firm title. Paul Galvin returned to Kerry training. Pobail Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne won an incredible 4th Corn Ui Mhuiri title, matching Tralee CBS who completed their foursome in 1934! Sidarian Vega won the GMHD Juvenile Classic in Tralee. Kerry enjoy a good Cheltenham including wins for Bryan Cooper and James Collins who won for the Bodhran Makers Syndicate on Knights Parade. Cathal Moynihan won the St Patrick’s Day Hill Climb organised by Tralee Cycling Club. Kerry defeated by Cork in the Munster u21 semifinal. The Park’s Shane McLoughlin signed a contract extension with Ipswich Town. Ruth O’Reilly who grew up in Tralee was part of the Irish Women’s Championship rugby winning team.

Shield. The route will include 7k of the Tralee Valentines Run so this will be great preparation for those taking part. The 10k is also open to walkers. The event sold out last year and entries are now open on the website. Registration will also take place on Saturday the 30th at the club and all entrants will receive a specially commissioned commemorative ‘O’Rahilly medal for all finishers. Girls Awards Night: The u8,10,’s, 12’s and 14’s enjoyed their presentation night with all age groups receiving plaques and the u13’s getting their medals from the Sandra Keane tournament. The girls who took part in the Kerry Development squads were also congratulated. Senior Club Chairman Frank O’Connor hosted the event and thanked all the players and the mentors who put in such a big effort during the year. Christmas Gift Ideas: The club has a variety of Christmas gift ideas available from the club through Declan Quill. Lotto: There was no winner of the Jackpot from the numbers drawn 3,9, 10 and 27 and the next jackpot will be e2,100. Off the field the weekly activities including cards, yoga classes, Pilates and Weightwatchers plus the weekly dancing sessions all take place as usual this week. Look in on the Neighbours: The club is encouraging all its members to look in on elderly neighbours during these times of bad weather.

PARNELL’S NEWS: Development Workshop: Parnell’s members are invited to take part in the Development Workshop event and details are on the clubs Facebook page. AGM Reports: As part of the reports at the AGM Ger O’Brien spoke on behalf of the u8 management team. They were delighted with the attendance at training sessions during the year. The two North Kerry Blitzes run by Maurice Leahy were wonderful occasions ran in great locations in Ardfert and Causeway as were the 3 in Abbeydorney, Ardfert and Caherslee while the end of year Blitz in John Mitchels finished off the year on a high. 7 clubs took part – Ardfert, Ballyduff, Lixnaw, Causeway, Ballyheigue, Firies and the host club Parnells. The Tuesday night sessions run by David O’Dea were well attended and really benefitted the kids. The club is delighted with the coaches that it has and is always looking for new people to get involved. Planning for 2016 is now underway.

NA GAEIL NEWS: AGM: The well attended 2015 AGM took place this week with club members welcomed by Chairman Tim Lynch. All the officers gave very detailed reports of the clubs activities and of the financial position of the club. One of the founder members Jim Fitzgibbon has decided to take a step back and he was thanked by all for his commitment to the club. There was a lively discussion from the floor on all club activities and plans are being put in place for the 2016 season. The club sends best wishes to Darren Burns who will undergo a transplant in Beaumont Hospital on January 4th and also to his donor Mike Burns. Everybody involved with the club hopes both enjoy a successful operation and a speedy recovery and we all echo this.

KERINS O’RAHILLY’S NOTES: The Kerins O’Rahillys 10k 1916 Commemorative Run will take place on Sunday 31st of January at 10am from the clubhouse where is will also finish.
