Meet H

i Kathryn welcome to Kerry, tell us a little bit about the boot camp you have just completed here at Parknasilla, Thanks! We have had such a wonderful time over the past 7 weeks in Parknasilla in Sneem. It has been lovely really to spend so much time in the Kingdom. My mum is from Kenmare so this neck of the woods is really like a home away from home. What Parknasilla offers their own clients is a very professional but personal service and it has been brilliant to work alongside them. The weather has been with us too which has been a God send as all our classes are done outside and what a setting!!!! Pure Results at Parknasilla has won over the hearts and minds of all of our clients, who I am absolutely sure will return year on year. Is it something you do each year and if so how can the ladies of Kerry start planning for your next trip? Yes, defo! I feel Pure Results will always have a base in Kerry along the Wild Atlantic Way. There is something so unique, rejuvenating and spiritual about working out

4

in the Kerry landscape. We do day trips to Derrynanne Beach, Gleninchaqinn National Park and we hike along the Old Kerry Way. Maybe I’m biased but there is nowhere else like it in Ireland as far as I’m concerned. We need as a country to really focus on our health and wellbeing and I would be delighted to welcome the ladies of Kerry to any of our camps, whether they want to live in or whether they want to avail of our day tripper rates. You’re a busy lady, The Voice, Operation Transformation, to name two, do you like the busy lifestyle and do you have any secrets you would like to share with our readers on juggling it all and still looking as good as you do every day? I won’t lie to you…the last two years setting up this business while holding down two of the biggest shows on RTE has been a real challenge. It has required stamina, a lot of driving, plenty of sleepless nights and more than one or two glasses of wine to stay sane. What do you do to relax? I love waking my dogs, having dinner with my partner Padraig and going for a great girlie night out with my mates I

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry don’t see often enough and dancing until dawn‌. these days that only seems to happen once every 6 months!!! We know you love Kerry, would you like to spend more time here? Absolutely! As I said it really does feel like a home away from home. Where to next for Kathryn? Well we are moving Pure Results to the Temple Lodge Spa outside Moate in Co West Meath and we are really looking forward to the months ahead. The business is growing from strength to strength and we are adding to our product offering all the

time. The end goal for me is and always has been, to make people feel confident in them again. To let them know they can win back their self-belief in a very supportive, inclusive environment, no matter where that is. We are all so busy in our lives, we must remember to take a step back and invest in ourselves. I think as women, by our very nature, we are way too hard on ourselves and we need to remember how brilliant we are and what we are capable of. anielle O’Sullivan from Killarney is the new 2016 Kerry Rose, which was announced by local Kerry host Daithi O’Sé at the 2016 Kerry Rose Selection at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel recently. Danielle was sponsored by the Killarney Grand Hotel. She is currently studying for her masters in human rights law in the University of Limerick, and plans on qualifying as a solicitor when she finishes. Danielle is an avid sports enthusiast having played gaelic football

with Killarney Legion for a number of years, and is also a keen martial artist. She has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has represented her county and country successfully both nationally and internationally. The 23 year old from Killarney is passionate about mental health campaigning and is currently the project leader for mental health as part of the US Embassy’s Youth Council. Kerry Rose judges - 1983 Rose Of Trale Brenda Hyland, Dr George Philip (Bons Secours Hospital Tralee), Caroline McEnry (The HR Suite, Tralee) assessed each entrant through individual and group interviews, as well as their stage interviews at Selection Night. The Roses enjoyed many events including a night out in Killarney visiting the Nathan Carter at the Gleneagle Hotel, Dancing in the Killarney Grand Hotel attended a night at the Kingdom Greyhound Stadium in Tralee. The ladies also enjoyed taking part in the Tralee Pieta House Darkness into Light Walk. MC Daithi O’Sé won over the crowd with his signature style of serious interviewing and hilarious anecdotes as he watched the Roses sing, play the violin and piano, and perform various types of dance. The amazingly talented Bryan Carr provided entertainment while the judges made their deliberations. A raffle was held on the night with all proceeds going to Pieta House.

Looking After Your Eyes

he sun is shining and a promise of a good summer is on the horizon, and automatically everyone reaches for the sun cream and the shades, while we are quiet good at doing research on sun creams and the best ones for coverage while still allowing a nice even tan do we pay as much attention to our sunglasses? Over time, continued exposure to UV radiation can cause serious harm to the eyes and age them prematurely. Research has shown that exposure to UV radiation over a period of months to

years increase the chance of developing cataracts, pterygium (an abnormal growth of the covering of the white of the eye onto the cornea) and eye cancer. Longterm exposure may also cause damage to the retina, which can lead to macular degeneration. Keep in mind that while most UV radiation comes directly from the sun, you can also be exposed to UV rays reflecting from surfaces such as water, beach sand, snow, and white cement. At higher elevations, such as when skiing or hiking in the mountains, the danger is even greater, since there is less atmosphere that normally would filter most UV radiation. The importance of sun protection for children is often overlooked. The lenses of their eyes are more transparent than those of adults, allowing shorter wavelength light to reach the retina so therefore we should also be very vigilant with

our kids and ensure their eyes are protected. “Because the effects of solar radiation are cumulative, it’s important to develop good protection habits early and have infants and children wear proper sunglasses whenever outdoors.” For optimal eye sun-safety, the professionals recommend wearing sunglasses or contact lenses that offer appropriate UV protection, applying UVblocking sunscreen around the eye area and wearing a hat to keep direct sunlight off of the face and eyes. The collection is endless and all the designer labels have produced a pair of some make or description, so our advice is pop along to your nearest optician and have a chat with them, we are spoilt for choice in Kerry with professionals such as Claire Harty CH opticians and Roger Harty in Tralee, Teresa Tangney, Tralee and Kilorglin, Maria Galvin Castleisland, Gerry O Connor Listowel,, Pat O Donogue, urban Optics Killarney, to name but a few, We need to realize the importance of looking after our eyes before it’s too late.

Hi Connect readers I hope you are getting a chance to avail of some sunshine, I must admit people are in a such a better mood and smile so much more after a couple of hours of sunshine. If you are like me, it can take a little more planning in deciding what to wear when it is warm. With cooler weather we were accustomed to accessorising almost all outfits with a scarf, but now we have to think differently about disguising the neck, sorry I meant accentuating other areas!!

We have just got in the most amazing selection of neck pieces into the shop, if your wearing a plain top with contrasting pants or skirt why not highlight the outfit with a necklace the same colour as the skirt or pants. A guide if buying jewellery, if your top is a v neck, think about going for a drop or v shaped chain, if the top or dress is round it is best to consider a circular piece of jewellery . If you are wearing a shawl in the evening Brooches as a clasp are very popular this season and we have many styles of brooches in stock . Until next time Keep smiling

Style

I AM DELIGHTED TO TELL YOU THAT THE SUN IS POURING IN THE WINDOW AS I’M WRITING THESE WORDS AND IT MAKES ME THINK STRAIGHT AWAY OF ALL THE VIBRANT COLOURS THAT ARE AROUND THIS SEASON. SOME OF THE HOT CONTENDERS ARE ALL SHADES OF PINKS, YELLOWS AND CORALS. THERE IS A COLOUR OUT THERE TO SUIT EVERY COMPLEXION AND DON’T BE AFRAID TO TRY ON AN ITEM IN DIFFERENT COLOURS TO SEE WHICH SUITS YOU BEST.

I know it can be hard moving out of the black clothes after the dull winter months but you could try swapping the black for the less harsh and equally versatile navy. An old friend of mine who is always impeccably dressed wears nothing but black and cream in the winter and navy and white in the summer, I have admitted defeat and given up trying to make her life more colourful as she always looks fabulously chic! Talking of navy reminds me that blue is once again huge this summer from baby blue to the regal royal. If you are a bit wary of adding colour a handy way to introduce it, is to keep the bottom half plain and wear a patterned top. Sometimes selecting one of the less dominant colours in the pattern as your base plain garment colour can have a striking effect. There are some beautiful patterned dresses out there this summer and they are a very hard working item in any woman’s wardrobe as you will be able to pick out different colours when matching shoes, headpieces and jackets/shawls to give a variety of looks. Be a bit adventurous and have some fun in mixing up the colours, the old days where blue and green should never be seen are well gone! It can be very flattering to dress in one colour palette and is both relaxed yet highly stylish. I cannot talk about colour without mentioning accessories and this year you will be spoilt for choice with the selection of bright, statement bags, headpieces and jewellery. There is a beautiful soft shimmery gold that is very big in accessories that subtly enhances several bright colours. Finally I have to mention this season’s hottest fashion item, the very versatile jumpsuit. Now I know I’ve gone off the point about colour but it was the real style winner at the V.I.P awards earlier this month, with different styles and colours on the red carpet. Not only can it be worn casually with a little denim jacket but it can be dressed up to the nines with heels and bold jewellery. For the very brave you can even get a patterned jumpsuit, but my personal favourite for versatility is a plain black one as it’s so easy then to add your own personality and style. Well that’s all for now, HAPPY SHOPPING,

Danny

THE CLUTTER OF POTS AND PANS WITH MARK DOE

Good pots and pans are an essential part of your kitchen kit. And good quality ones will last for years, if not a lifetime. You get what you pay for, but often going for celebrity chef brands isn’t always a great move.

POTS

I will begin with saucepans. Stainless steel or cast iron saucepans are my preference. I suggest three saucepans, large, medium and small, all with lids. A large stock pot is also handy for making stocks, cooking larger quantities of soup, or your Christmas ham etc. A Teflon-coated medium pot is also good for making white sauces and custard. Many cheap pans have spot-welded handles that in time will become loose with all the shaking and tossing they go through. So look for screwed or riveted handles. You can tell a good saucepan by the weight of it; the heavier the better.

FRYING PANS

An absolute essential in any kitchen are a couple of non stick, Teflon-coated frying pans. A pan with diameter of 24-26 cm is a good size. I have a few and tend to keep one just for fish. Again, any supplier who supplies to the catering industry will stock these.

You don’t need to heat Teflon pans until they are smoking. Heating them to much will destroy the Teflon coating. Pans that are made for commercial use will last many years. A stainless steel frying pan, with a stainless steel handle is great for cooking from hob to oven, like when you are making pear tarte Tatin.

A GOOD CASSEROLE DISH

GRIDDLE PAN

Griddle pans are brilliant for cooking steaks and brushcetta . You can purchase a cast iron or Teflon-coated one. They are both good, but cast iron will withstand the higher heat better and last a lot longer. You can purchase large griddle pans that will sit on two of your gas or electric rings, allowing you to cook more items on the griddle pan.

Having a cast iron, earthenware or pyrex dish is a must for cooking casseroles and stews in the oven. Cast iron cookware is my preference and great for hob to oven cooking. Having one, good sized cast iron pot is a great investment as they will last a life time.

MensTrends

With our Irish summer upon us I have been looking at some of the latest trends to get you through to autumn. The emphasis is on layering this summer, to the rest of us that’s adding a light jacket or shirt or jumper. Almost every menswear designer showed khaki anoraks for this summer(not a bad piece to have in the wardrobe either way), navy and grey will both be seen more and more in stores in the coming weeks. Personally I love navy, it’s far more flattering to Irish skin tones than black. There’s a lot of grey to be seen this summer, personally I’d say go for darker greys rather than light as they will work better with summer colours and will give great contrast to any outfit of choice. Lots of menswear designers opting for wider leg trousers, I’d recommend turning up to above the ankles just to show a little leg. Remember sunscreen spf15 or higher. TILL NEXT MONTH

CONNECT Motoring HYBRID IS THE NEW FUEL! Before even starting to explain how hybrid works lets get something out of the way first. Hybrid vehicles NEVER have to be externally recharged ,they are never plugged in-the petrol engine does all that for you and aside from that a hybrid is the easiest car you will ever drive ! It is hard to believe but Toyota and Kellihers have been selling hybrid vehicles for 15 yrs. While the hybrid range used to be made up exclusively of the Prius ,Toyota have expanded the range dramatically this year to include the Yaris,Auris and now the spectacular Toyota Rav4 hybrid.Combining an automatic gearbox(all hybrids are automatic) and a 2.4 Lexus powertrain the Rav4 has taken the segment by storm offering a unique blend of silent, serene motoring making for a most relaxing driving experience. It is the closest to silent driving you will get as the hybrid system is totally silent and glides over the surface with effortless power and grace. It is also of course saving fuel, motor tax oh and a few whales as well as its emissions are extremely low. So give yourself a half hour some day and drop into Kellihers and take a Rav4 hybrid for a test drive and believe me you will be more than pleasantly surprised.

PHYSIOTHERAPY AND FITNESS / WALKING “It always seems impossible until it’s done” – Nelson Mandela Walking is one of the easiest ways to be physically fit. How much should you aim for and how it fits into a busy day is up to you. There are many good reasons to walk for example walking regularly: • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

Gives you more energy Makes you feel good Makes you look better Makes you sleep better Increases your stamina Helps you manage stress Tones your muscles Burns up calories Improves your mobility at any age Strengthens your heart Lowers blood pressure Reduces cholesterol Protects against osteoporosis Reduces risk of developing diabetes

For health benefits you need to be physically active for at least 30 minutes most days of the week. The 30 minutes can be broken into 2 or 3 shorter sessions whether you are doing the school run, driving to work, taking the bus or train you can easily get half an hours’ worth of walking into each day. A really simple way of getting started is to step outside walk in any direction for 5 minutes then walk back again. SURVIVING Connect WITH YOUR HEALTH CANCER: NOW WHAT? Connect | Lifestyle

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry

June 2nd marks Cancer Survivors Day around the world. When someone is given the information for the first time that they have cancer their mind is in a spin. It has a huge impact on families and people’s immediate circle of friends. Despite the fact that they will have being undergoing investigations, most people hope for a less serious diagnosis. Many changes in cancer management have occurred since I first embarked on a medical career. Medical advances mean that cancer treatment has improved hugely in recent years. Cancer survival has doubled in the last 40 years in the UK. Half of all people diagnosed with cancer in England and Wales survive for ten years or more. Survival rates are higher in women than men.

physical abilities. It prevents muscles from wasting and bones from becoming brittle. Exercise also helps self-esteem and group exercise is good for keeping up social contacts. Your exercise programme should take account of what you are capable of and how active you were prior to treatment. People often suffer huge fatigue during chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Get fresh air. Look at therapies such as acupuncture or reflexology. Yoga, meditation or mindfulness can help. Issues such as hair loss, changes in skin and hair can affect self-esteem. For women, many treatments may

As healthcare professionals we now communicate in a more open manner with cancer patients. Support services such as counselling and complementary medicine are now an inherent part of cancer care. Early Diagnosis Makes a Difference One of the biggest advances in relation to cancer is that of screening tests. While we can never completely prevent cancer, early detection and detection of “pre-cancerous” conditions allows earlier, and often less aggressive, treatments. People should avail of the free tests such as smear tests for women, bowel screening and mammograms. Living Well During and After Treatment • Good nutrition is important with an emphasis on avoiding unprocessed foods and preservatives. Cancer treatment can affect appetite so advice from a dietician or nutritionist can be very helpful. Avoid gaining weight as research suggests that being overweight can increase recurrences of some cancers such as breast cancer. • Try to give up cigarettes and minimise alcohol consumption. • Regular exercise helps to improve

induce a very immediate menopause. Women treated for womb or breast cancer may be terrified to consider different treatments; they feel they should “grin and bear it” because they should be lucky to be alive- it is always worth chatting to your doctor. For example, weekly acupuncture for eight weeks can ease menopause symptoms. Fear and Guilt It is natural to worry about recurrence of cancer. Being involved in support groups can be helpful as you meet people who have “been in your shoes”. Feeling guilty about surviving when someone else did not is natural; there are many counselling services out there that can provide support.

What To Say To Someone Who Has Had Cancer This can be a situation that makes people uncomfortable. Tell people if they are looking well. Let them know you would like to help and support them if they want you to. Sharing stories or being over optimistic may not help. Just saying “I’m not sure what to say” is also ok. It is better to acknowledge the situation rather than avoiding someone; this can make a survivor feel even more isolated. Children who have a loved one who is unwell can struggle to understand what is happening. Once again, openness is best and your GP can assist you in working through this difficult situation. Resources in Kerry In Kerry we are very lucky to have a team of specially trained staff at our Oncology Unit at University College Kerry. People can have chemotherapy locally and nurse specialists and consultant oncologists run regular clinics-this saves trips to Cork or Dublin. We also have a huge resource of specialists at Recovery Haven and the Kerry Cork Health Link Bus support people travelling to Cork for treatments. There are also many support services through a variety of cancer groups and primary care teams- always talk to your GP.

Self-Help for Depresion Becoming An Adult @ Scotia CONNECT KERRY WOMEN IN BUSINESS

Fibromyalgia syndrome is a common and chronic disorder characterised by widespread pain, diffuse tenderness, and a number of other symptoms. The word “fibromyalgia” comes from the Latin term for fibrous tissue (fibro) and the Greek ones for muscle (myo) and pain (algia). Although fibromyalgia is often considered an arthritis-related condition, it is not truly a form of arthritis (a disease of the joints) because it does not cause inflammation or damage to the joints, muscles, or other tissues. Like arthritis, however, fibromyalgia can cause significant pain and fatigue, and it can interfere with a person’s ability to carry on daily activities. Also like arthritis, fibromyalgia is considered a rheumatic condition, a medical condition that impairs the joints and/or soft tissues and causes chronic pain. Massage is one of the complementary therapies that is most highly rated by people with fibromyalgia. Research has shown that massage can help reduce pain, elevate mood, decrease the need for pain medicines, and increase the quality of life for some fibromyalgia patients

Have you ever felt that, even though you are now officially an adult, you haven’t really grown up yet? Well, you’re not alone. Being an adult is hard, and many of us still haven’t learned how to take it on. We tend now to have an extended period of adolescence before we take on the tasks of adulthood, and often our upbringing doesn’t prepare us for it very well at all. Do you find yourself avoiding situations that may be difficult, or “giving in” rather than standing your ground? Do you become paralysed when things are awkward, not knowing what to do? Do you feel that things are too much for you, and let other people handle them? Or do you become unreasonably angry and enraged when you are challenged or thwarted? All of these responses are childlike, and disempower us. Becoming an adult means taking responsibility, being able to tolerate discomfort and being able to get our needs met, so we don’t have to run and hide when things get tough, collapse under pressure, or become furious at people who challenge us. We can choose our responses and our actions, become accountable for our behaviour, and – finally – grow up. Recently researchers have increased their knowledge and understanding between certain types of stroke and the presence of the oral bacteria Streptococcus Mutans. Studies that were carried out in Osaka, Japan, found that 26% of patients who experienced intracerebral haemorrhage (bleeding inside the brain) were found to have the S. Mutans bacteria in their saliva. Amongst patients with other types of stroke, only 6% tested positive for this type of bacteria. They also found that small microbleeds in the brain may cause dementia and that the number of bleeds were higher in patients with the S. Mutans bacteria. The authors of this Japanese study feel that the bacteria may bind to blood vessels weakened by age and high blood pressure leading to small or large haemorrhages. This study shows us that people need to take care of their oral health because it is good for their brain and heart. The S. Mutans bacteria is found in approximately 10% of the general population and is known to cause tooth decay. Beir bua agus beannacht.

UNDERSTANDING FACEBOOK

Wondering how some businesses get seen on Facebook, and yours doesn’t? Well, you need to understand some simple things: 1. WHAT PEOPLE WANT – Facebook will always prioritise articles and posts that are of interest to people. Facebook watch what people watch, and will push similar stories to them based on what they’ve viewed before. 2. ENGAGE QUICKLY – What you post must engage quickly with your audience, if it’s a slow starter, people won’t stick around long enough to watch it, and Facebook will assume your audience aren’t interested in it. 3. VARIETY MATTERS – Don’t always post about the same thing. Facebook prefers wide-ranging content rather than the same information coming at audiences from different sources. 4. STORIES THAT MATTER – Facebook wants you to provide engaging content that actually matters to your audience, so before you post, think – Is this something my audience are actually interested in? 5. BE PATIENT – Facebook takes its time to be certain that followers find what you post interesting. Over time, if your followers are engaged, Facebook with organically prioritise your posts on your followers newsfeeds. Absenteeism is a substantial cost for every business in Ireland. Previously figures released by the Small Firms Association suggested that absenteeism from work costs small business €793 million per annum. According to research conducted by the SFA the national average for absenteeism is 3.5 percent, or eight days annually. In small firms, this is six days, in medium firms eight days and in large firms ten days. It is estimated that the overall cost of this level of absenteeism could be in excess of €1 billion. Back pain or injury and stress are the most commonly cited problems on medical certs. It is essential that Employers ensure that they are fulfilling their duty of care to their employees by including manual handling and work related stress when conducting risk assessments as part of their review of their Health & Safety Statements. In tackling absenteeism, you must have a clear and comprehensive absence and sick leave policy. The absence and sick leave policy should cover a number of key areas namely: • • • • •

notification procedures certification procedures sick leave payment referral to company doctor procedures return to work procedures

The consequences of failure to follow the absence and sick leave policy must be clearly outlined. All staff should be fully aware of the policy, each member of staff should be issued with the policy in writing and they should be asked to sign to confirm that they have read and understood it. Does It Matter? Yes, the UK remains our largest trading partner and the Irish economic recovery is aligned closer to the UK than any of our other European counterparts. The uncertainty caused by the Brexit debate alone is causing the markets to fluctuate.

What are the Long Term Implications? In reality trade between Ireland and UK will ultimately adjust should the UK opt to leave the European Union. The short term uncertainty will subside quickly and trade will return to normal once changes to practices are introduced. As with any changes there will be those who benefit and those who lose out.

The real fear is that a Brexit would cause an immediate fall in growth in the UK which would have a

whether the UK stays or leaves. The economic model has stuttered badly in recent years and there is a clear lack of understanding about what the European Union now represent. Without the development of a clear vision of what the members want the European Union to represent, more crisis’s are not far away.
