Sinus Health If you are suffering from a chronic sinus problem, you will be familiar with the persistent feelings of congestion, pressure and pain. Sinus problems are extremely common. The sinus are spaces within the skull that connect the nasal passages. The main sinuses are located behind the eyebrows (frontal), cheekbones (maxillary) and nose (ethmoid and sphenoid). Generally, these sinuses are filled only with air, and are lined with a delicate skin tissue, known as mucous membranes. The job of the sinus cavities and mucous membranes is to clean and moisten the air we breathe before it gets to our lungs. Through the sinuses, particles in the air that may irritate our lungs, such as pollen or dust, are picked up and removed by the mucous membranes. The air is also gently warmed and moistened so as not to irritate the delicate tissue of the lungs. The air filled quality of the sinus also serves to lighten the weight of the skull, and they also help regulate sound formation for speech. So, it is little wonder that congested, blocked or infected sinuses can be very uncomfortable. Sinusitis is the term used for inflammation of the sinus cavities. Symptoms of sinusitis include, snoring, blocked nose, nasal discharge, headaches, pressure in the head, facial pain, swollen and irritated eyes and an inability to smell. Many of the factors that can cause irritation can be linked to diet, including dairy, excessive cold, raw, oily and greasy foods and refined carbohydrates and sugary snacks are considered inflammatory, creating a strong immune, mucous forming reaction in sensitive people. You may notice after consuming certain foods you will feel phlegm forming in the throat shortly afterwards, or the pressure in your sinus will increase. To help keep your sinus clear from mucous build-up and infection, a daily rinse using a NETI POT with some added COLLIDAL SILVER solution can be very helpful, (the colloidal silver acts as a natural antibiotic). Adding a few drops of OREGANO essential oil to the shower floor in the morning and allow the warm water to create a decongesting, anti-viral vapour for you to inhale as you shower can also be very beneficial. Some of the natural products you will find in your local HORANS HEALTHSTORE to help with Sinusitis include, SINUFORCE NASAL SPRAY (ideal to have for symptomatic relief ), NEW ERA TISSUE SALTS COMBINATION H and NEW VISTAS SNS formula. As always, we will discuss you specific requirements and recommend the product to suit your needs best. Call in to your local HORANS HEALTHSTORE for more advice and information. Until next time, stay healthy Deirdre

Síle Seoige gets“Ready to Be Real” about life as both a career woman and mother, having everything and juggling it all. By Cathriona Murphy welcomed beautiful baby Clíodhna into your family, congratulations! How has that transition of having both a boy and a girl been so far?

When introducing Síle Seoige, it is hard to know where to start. One of Irelands best loved TV presenter’s, she has gone on to produce her successful podcast “Ready to Be Real” where she presents some of the most hard hitting topics with a delivery that is both compassionate and emphatic. Mother to 4yr old Cathal and 5 month old Clíodhna, Síle juggles motherhood with a hectic career, keeping her social media full of refreshingly honest perspectives of her life and the realities of a mother doing it all. No stranger to hardship, Síle has bravely fought battles of her own with both cancer and two miscarriages, allowing her followers to share in her grief in a most dignified manner. Keeping it real is an ethos and principle that Síle brings to her public and personal life, following through to her career and most predominantly into her podcast “Ready to Be Real”. To find out more about the woman behind the name, we sat with Síle to find out more! Síle, thank you so much for sitting to chat with us today! You recently 6

Thank you! It’s definitely a big change but one we are absolutely loving! We had waited some time for baby number two to arrive so we are just soaking up every minute with her. She is genuinely such a happy, content baby, life with her is so much fun and very busy. Obviously it didn’t matter whether she was a boy or a girl as long as she was healthy, but it is the icing on the cake knowing we have both a boy and a girl. Cathal is really enjoying being a big brother, he has taken to his new role really well which I am relieved about because I had heard from some friends that the transition can be hard at times. I think maybe because of his age, he is 4 years old, he is enjoying doing the little jobs to help out with Clíodhna, being involved, talking to her and playing. Her face lights up once she sees him, she is absolutely mad about him. I am really enjoying the new-born phase a lot more this time around with Clíodhna, I think it’s because we know for sure we are finished with our family, we feel very complete so I am just soaking up every moment with her. The new-born phase with Cathal was so different, it was an absolute whirlwind from having no kids to being a mother overnight. The struggle now for me is juggling work schedules with being a mom and I’m not going to lie, it is very hard. As soon as I have the kids put to bed, I open the laptop to answer work emails, I try and plan interviews during her nap schedules which changes daily so in

that respect it is difficult to plan or commit to anything. For anyone that has children, you will know that the first year is intense and after that it is full on but we do know exactly how lucky we are to be in this position. With your podcast, “Ready to Be Real” you have interviewed guests such as Amy Dunne and Charlene Masterson. How do you feel personally coming away from these interviews in terms of digesting some of the traumatic content you have just heard?

7

“Ready to Be Real” has been a huge success! With a vast array of personalities, it challenges the listener at times with their own belief systems. How do you choose your guests, what qualities do you look for in them?

I feel very different depending on the conversation. There have been times where I’ve had to go for a coffee or just a bit of time out just to process everything I‘ve just heard. I do come away feeling a huge sense of admiration for my guests that I speak to, their strength, their willingness to talk to me about very difficult things, I am always just really in awe of them. After that I do question myself, did I ask the right questions? Did I give them enough space to talk? I am always more conscious of the guests and their feelings than I am about my own. I would be thinking about how are they feeling after sitting to talk, the last thing I would want for anyone that had lived through something traumatic is to re-traumatise them. I like to check back in with them and see how they are doing because sometimes they can feel absolutely wiped after it and then other times they tell me they are glad that they talked to me, that it helped them. It can be cathartic in a way for them? I speak to people from all walks of life such as Geraldine Mullan who tragically lost all of her family in Donegal, her grief is something that I could just never comprehend so I was very conscious about her feelings and just letting her talk. With a podcast like this, you simply are there to just let your guests talk, it’s not about me as an interviewer, it’s about giving them the chance to just feel comfortable enough to open up and talk and if they do, I need to make sure that they feel okay afterwards. It gives me perspective and a feeling of gratitude in my own life..

8

It is a very mixed bag when it comes to the people I feature, I talk to people that are well known and what I would like is for the listener to get a better sense of the real person behind the name if they are an actor or TV presenter. I want the listener to come away thinking “Oh, that’s who they really are” and to learn something new about them. Then I also do topic led conversations based on items such as menopause, sex and grief with a specialist so I do find them very informative. Then I do extraordinary life stories with people who have been through extraordinary circumstances such as Amy Dunne or Charlene Masterson who have both been through some very difficult circumstances but have come through that adversity, it gives the listeners hope. I always introduce my podcast by saying I hope the conversation inspires, challenges and educates the listener and that is exactly what I set out to do. I want to challenge the listener, I want to challenge their thoughts and perceptions of the person, topic or view that will perhaps give them a different perspective or level of understanding. The name of the podcast is “Ready to Be Real” and its about having authentic, real conversations it’s not about saying what people want to hear, it’s about tackling the conversations that people find tricky to listen to. It can challenge your own thinking and a lot of them do inspire the listener and leave them full of admiration for the guest with a new appreciation for what they have in their own life. Sometimes we complain about the small things in life and then you listen toa podcast with someone who has lived through so much and you just think, I actually have a lovely life, I have a lot to be thankful for. I don’t have a set criteria but I do divide them into 3 categories,; well know, topic led conversations with experts and then finally, people with extraordinary life stories. You have been extremely open with the public, but more so you have been very open on your heartbreak with pregnancies. How did it feel to open

up that conversation to your followers and beyond? It’s not easy to make yourself vulnerable or to talk about something that causes you pain but I ultimately knew it was the right thing to do. I knew I couldn’t hide it, I had been absent from social media for some time because I was feeling really down, I was grieving, I was very sad. I knew I couldn’t come on and pretend I was fine when I wasn’t, so the only honest thing I could do was to say “Hi, I haven’t been on and this is the reason why. . .” The outpouring of support and solidarity from people absolutely blew me away, I just didn’t expect it. I think people are really craving more real content and for anyone that has gone through the pain of miscarriage, whether they were able or not to open up to friends and family, they were glad that I had. They felt less alone, whenever we acknowledge something bad or we have gone through something, there will always be someone who had gone through something similar. Miscarriage in this country has been such a taboo subject for far too long, it’s been ingrained in us down from generations that we just don’t talk about it. That was the whole premise behind making the documentary that I did about miscarriage You documented that journey in a documentary, “Deireadh Tochta”, exploring Pregnancy Loss Research Group in CUMH. In your opinion, have you seen changes in the right direction, could more be done? The documentary, End the Silence, was to end that stigma and encourage people to talk about it. I do think services still have a way to go, but CUMH are doing some incredible work down there. I do think the service you receive depends on the hospital you go to, I’ve been hearing some are better than others. When you make a programme like I did, you get a lot of feedback from people and some will compliment hospitals and services, certain doctors and nurses, whereas others will say other services are very behind, that they weren’t spoken to with compassion. My own experience was very positive, I had 2 miscarriages and 2 D&C procedures in the coombe hospital in Dublin. I could not say anything but positive words about how I was treated, I was treated with such care and compassion the whole way through and I just felt like they got it? The pain of it, they understood that this was a big thing for me and treated me with compassion. It’s disappointing to hear that this may not be the case everywhere.

9

You recently said of the pandemic “I hope life doesn’t go back to normal after this, I hope we learn what is important” What have you personally taken from the pandemic that you will try to keep in mind going forward? The pandemic was very subjective, it very much depended on the individuals life to begin with. For us personally, Cathal was 2 at the beginning of the pandemic, being at home with him we were able to go out on the bikes, bring him to feed the ducks, have picnics and just be together as a family. To be honest it was very blissful, when you are used to being very busy and work taking you away a lot. That first March, my work diary had 2 foreign trips booked in, wall to wall work which is great when you work freelance and then the virus came along and all of it stopped. I realized quickly how precious this was for us, but that might have been different for say a couple going through a rough patch and all of a sudden they find themselves isolating together for months, other people living alone might have found it extremely hard to be so isolated. I personally just reassessed everything in my life and what was important to us as a family. When we look back on our lives are we really going to think about all of the hours that we worked or will we remember the people in our lives

that mattered? Being present with the ones you love is the most precious and important thing of all. On your social media you posted a 30’s snapshot where you documented a high or low in every year of your thirties. From Cancer, engagement, pregnancy, miscarriage, you have been through so much. What do you hope for your 40’s and your career going forward? I’m hoping for a lot less drama! All I want is my kids to be healthy and happy, I want to be around for them. Once myself, my partner and our kids are happy, anything beyond that is a bonus, it really is that simple isn’t it? If there are bumps in the road we will deal with it in the best way that we can if and when they come our way. Career wise, I am doing the podcast every week, I am back MCing some are virtual and some are in person. I am currently in talks with some production companies in relation to TV work down the line. So right now I am enjoying the time with Clíodhna and my family, my podcast and I am looking forward to a fun summer ahead.

Síle, thank you so much, it was an absolute pleasure to have you here with us. For further information, Síle’s podcast, “Ready to Be Real”, can be found on all good podcast platforms. Edel Lawlor recognised in

Top 100 Women

in Social Enterprise Europe By Cathriona Murphy Tralee business woman, Edel Lawlor, known for her impressive rise to prominence as one of the worlds leading child psychotherapists and play therapy specialists, has recently been recognised as one of the top 100 Women in Social Enterprise in Europe 2022. Edel founded Expressive Play which is a child and adolescent therapy centre and together with over 20 years of experience in addition to her MA in Psychotherapy and Play therapy, Edel has worked hard over the years to get where she is today. We sat with Edel to chat with her, reflecting back on her career and to get some valuable advice for parents who might feel they are at a cross roads in their relationships with their children. Edel, firstly congratulations on achieving this recognition. When you think back to when you started out on this journey, could you have foreseen the success? When I found out I was included in the Top 100 I was absolutely delighted and honoured. I think more so the fact that all the women that made it into the final 100 all have incredible journeys and stories behind them. It’s an award that is really all about celebrating women that succeeded against all odds and I believe I have done exactly that. I was an early school leaver, I didn’t do the typical journey into college so my path to education would have been quite different being a young mother. I have now been working with children and their parents for over 23 years and have based myself here in Kilflynn. In addition to this most recent accolade, I was also recognised as one of the top 100 female entrepreneurs in Europe, something I was very proud of. Looking back, I am delighted with how far my business and career have come. I am also now teaching all over the world in countries such as Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Dubai, something I would never have imagined before so I do feel very privileged. When did you and your family start to realise for yourself just where your career was taking you and your business? I think my reputation was growing over the years and for me, 12

people had seen what I was capable of before I ever saw it for myself. For example, back in 2018 there were 14 people picked from across the world to go to a forum to discuss play therapy in which I was selected to represent Ireland. It really felt at that moment I could see how my success had grown. For years my focus has been working towards giving play therapy a platform, recognising the importance of children’s mental health and well-being. I wanted to remove the stigma around play therapy and similar supports. I wanted parents to know that if they are worried about their child, it’s okay to reach out to a play therapist or a child and adolescent psychotherapist. So I had been pushing for that change for years and of course it is hard do all that while being a mom and running a business, going to college. But I am fortunate in the way that what I work at actually has huge benefits for me and my family, I’ve always been a very playful mom, very tuned into the importance of play with children. Of course it has downsides but I think mostly my work has blended very well with my family life. I have been so lucky with family support, my Mother has been a huge influence in my life always ready to support me when I needed it. I was also thankfully blessed with the best childminder in the world, Rita. Over the span of your career, have you seen a shift in the recognition of child and adolescent mental health services, perhaps a lifting of the inherent stigma? When I look back to when I first set up my business, people were questioning do children even need therapy? There was such a strong stigma surrounding it and people really believed that children just get over things, that they are resilient. But of course we now know that’s not true, we recognise now that they do

13

need support and its okay for them to get support. Thankfully though it has become more positive to talk to children about mental health, especially in a world where we now have more screen time and social media use than ever before. I’m not saying there should be no screen time but there needs to be a connection and more communication from parent and child. But what I do tell parents is that there is no such thing as a perfect parent and if I ever meet one, I will write a book about them! Its just so important, for the child’s benefit, that parents realise it’s okay to just be a good enough parent. Sometimes parents just need to hear that they are doing a good job with their child and to know that play therapy is there as an option. For example, children don’t always avail of play therapy just because they are going through trauma, it can be for reasons such as a phobia of bee’s or dog’s and even social anxiety. It can be particularly beneficial for children who have been impacted by an illness diagnosis within the family such as cancer, I have been very privileged with working alongside Recovery Haven in that capacity. So in that respect, there is definitely a different view around supports for children and much more in place now. Finally, Edel, what does 2022 have in store for you and your business?

Going forward, the rest of 2022 is pretty full! I have been invited to Saudi Arabia to help set up a clinic over there in conjunction with all of the work I have been doing online. My goal is to write a book, whether it gets done this year or not I wont pressure myself! Before I finish I just want to say that yes, I have achieved a lot over the years with my business and winning awards, but for me, all I want is that parents really understand that being good enough is enough. If they stop striving for this perfect parent model and just being happy with being good enough, things will get easier. There are 4 play therapists working from Expressive now, which is wonderful to work along the other ladies Liz, Maria and my daughter Clodagh, we are all very excited to see what the future holds for expressive play! Given my line of work, I am a huge advocate for self-care for myself and my team. For me personally, I love spending time with my family, I have discovered open water swimming and it’s something me and my girls do together. I have a deep love for Kerry so spend a lot of time discovering the kingdom and new beaches, cafes and restaurants. For more information visit Expressive Play Therapy on both Instagram and Facebook

DO YOU FEAR DENTAL TREATMENT? Attending the dentist can sometimes be a daunting prospect if you haven’t had dental treatment for some time or if you are undergoing more complex dental procedures. Thankfully if you are particularly nervous there is one treatment option which might work for you! Dental sedation allows you to feel more comfortable during treatment whilst still being fully awake during treatment. What is dental sedation? Dental sedation is available in numerous types from oral(tablet ) to Nitrous oxide (happy gas) and IV sedation. What is involved?

During sedation you are still awake for the procedure but the action of the sedative enduces a relaxed state . The feeling is one of complete relaxation with very little memory of the procedure itself.During nitrous oxide sedation a mask is placed over the nose (these can be scented if desired particularly useful for children)The gas is inhaled though the nose during the procedure. The gas is comprised of nitrous oxide and is commonly known as laughing gas.

Is everyone suitable? Nitrous oxide sedation is suitable for both adults and children. It is not suitable for pregnant women. If you suffer from a respiratory condition ie severe asthma, COPD,bronchitis then you are most likely not suitable for treatment. Common colds, and allergies may prevent treatment on the day as it impairs the ability to breath the gas in sufficiently. Dental sedation is particularly useful for children if they are anxious ,or are needle phobic or in cases where a general anaesthetic is not advisable. What procedures can be done under sedation? All treatments can be done under sedation from dental scaling/ cleaning, treatment of gum disease to more complex treatments such as crown and bridgework. Does it work if you have a strong gag reflex? Sedation works particularly well if you have a strong gag reflex as it relaxes the muscle and reduces the gagging sensation. It is excellent if taking dental impressions(moulds of the teeth)are required for those that are very sensitive. Is there any downtime? When receiving nitrous oxide sedation or laughing gas the clinician will monitor you after treatment . You will not be discharged from the clinic until you are fully recovered. For further details contact Dr Susan Crean Dental and Facial aesthetics., 12 Denny street Tralee on 066 7117577 or info@creandental.ie

Pearly Whites by Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill Dental patients are often confused and need advice when it comes to the best way of planning their treatment. It is wise to get the basic items completed initially, in order to create good oral health. This would include fillings, removal of teeth that are beyond repair and gum treatments for gum disease. Once oral health has been restored, you can then concentrate on a long term plan. This may include moving teeth into a more favourable position with clear aligner trays. It is not always necessary to do this. However, when teeth are in their best position in the mouth, they will be less likely to chip and break and it also reduces the chance of decay as they will be cleaned much more easily. Finally, the colour and shape of straightened teeth may need adjusting. Teeth can be whitened after orthodontic treatment. Once whitened, the colour should be left to settle for 10-14 days before re-shaping the teeth with any composite (white filling) being bonded to the teeth or by crowning (covering) teeth with porcelain. To summarise, get your oral health sorted, then move teeth if necessary before whitening and shaping teeth. As always discuss your options with your dentist. They will be happy to advise you or refer you to a specialist if necessary. Beir Bua.

Ask the Pharmacist In the latest edition of Ask The Pharmacist, Mounthawk Pharmacy’s Pat and Maria discuss how to keep yourself safe and well on your holidays. The holiday season is in full swing and we are seeing what seems like more people flying out on holidays than ever before. When planning your holiday itinerary there are a few products available here in Mounthawk Allcare Pharmacy that every traveller will need in their suitcase. What follows is a brief summary of these items. The Irish love the sun but it’s officialthe sun does not love the Irish. We have one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world so it is vital that we do whatever we can to mitigate our risk. Sun-cream is an absolute must when travelling abroad to sunnier climes. It comes in a range of factors and the fairer the skin the higher the factor you should apply. Look for a reputable brand that offers excellent protection against UVA and UVB-if in doubt call in and we will talk you through the many options available. Here in Mounthawk Pharmacy we stock an enormous range of sun-creams, including such wonderful brands as La Roche Posay, P20, Eucerin, Ambre Solaire, Nivea and Calypso. Whatever requirement you may have we have the right product for you. These products are available as face creams, body mists, roll ons and in traditional cream form. Make sure to apply liberally and often throughout the day. One thing to remember is you can get burnt even on an overcast day so sun-cream is something we really need to use more often when we are spending time outdoors over the summer months. If you do get burnt, make sure to take Ibuprofen to bring down the inflammation and apply a good quality after-sun product. Hydration is the name of the game and make sure you consume plenty of water in hot weather. One thing to remember is our eyes can be easily damaged by the sun’s rays so it is always wise to wear sunglasses when out

18

in the sun. Polarised sunglasses offer the best protection and luckily we have a fantastic range of affordable sunglasses right here in Mounthawk Pharmacy. For all the fashionistas out there, we also stock exclusive Karen Millen and Ted Baker sunglasses at very reasonable prices. These are flying off the shelves so pop in to see us quickly before they are gone. An upset tummy can ruin your holiday plans so it is important to lessen the risk of this occurring. Tap water in some countries is not up to the same standard as Irish water supplies so often it is a good idea to use bottled water when cooking. If you do develop diarrhoea, Dioralyte sachets will help to prevent dehydration and Imodium or Arret will help to stop the diarrhoea. Motilium tablets work great to stop feelings of nausea, however you must be over 12 years old to use them. Indigestion can occur when trying exotic food so Nexium, Gaviscon or Rennies will help with the feelings of heartburn. Call into store in Mounthawk Pharmacy where we have all the products you need to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday!

The Advantages and benefits of weight training or strength training for women - of all ages. As a personal trainer working with clients of all ages over the past few years,- most want the same results - to lose weight and "tone up". Simply put, this means simultaneously dropping body fat whilst increasing lean muscle mass, and the most efficient and proven way to do this- is strength training (combined with adequate nutrition). Thankfully, more and more women no longer fear that weights will make them big and bulky.(that's too many cupcakes) If anything, it is exactly what most women need do for how they want to look and to slow down the results of aging. The added bonus is that as well as fat loss and toning - strength training has a wealth of other health and wellness benefits. Here are just a few.

Improved Heart health

Strength training results in stronger muscles - this includes the Heart , lungs and diaphragm. All good.

long after you stop exercising. An increase in lean muscle mass results in a higher metabolism and a higher metabolism means more calories burnt throughout the day.

Mental health

Lifting weights has been shown to alleviate depressive and anxiety symptoms, boost self-esteem, reduce stress and improve overall body image Young Irish people have some of the highest levels of depression in Europe. Women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and women also tend to be less selfconfident and negatively evaluate their physique far more frequently than men. With such worrying statistics on female mental health, recent research has focussed on exploring weight training as a preventative treatment. Lifting weights has been shown to alleviate depressive and anxiety symptoms, boost selfesteem, reduce stress and improve overall body image.

Benefits during pregnancy

Bone health

Strength training increases bone density ie results in stronger bones . Weak bones are more likely to fracture or break than healthy bones, Women are four times more likely to develop osteoporosis - strength training is proven to slow down or prevent osteoporosis.

Improved sporting performance

Strength training can benefit your performance across an array of different sporting activities. Whether your sport requires the ability to run faster, jump higher, tackle harder or go longer, your performance will be significantly inhibited without incorporating resistance training into your training regime. Regardless of the sport, effective strength and conditioning programmes are now paramount to athletic performance globally.

There are many benefits to strength training during pregnancy; decreased incidence of preeclampsia, improved weight management, reduced incidence of gestational diabetes, enhanced body image, easier labour and a reduction in lower back pain through the strengthening of abdominal and back muscles. Supervised and structured training regimes have been shown to be both safe and effective for pregnant women.

Reduced pain intensity

Weight training has been shown to ease pain intensity by strengthening muscles and improving flexibility in those suffering with chronic lower back pain.

Improved sleep quality

Injury prevention

Weight training can help to prevent injuries by strengthening and stabilising muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons and ultimately improving joint stability. , resulting in a reduced risk of falls and injuries both during exercise and daily activities. Similar to bone health, the more muscle mass you have as you get older, the better chance you have of preventing sarcopenia (natural muscle loss due to ageing).

Increased metabolism

Not only does strength training effectively burn body fat during training but your metabolism remains elevated for several hours afterwards meaning that your body will continue to burn fat

Strength training may improve sleep quality by reducing the amount of stress hormones released by the body. It can also help to fall asleep quicker and wake less frequently throughout the night. In a nut shell - get lifting . If you are considering taking up the barbell, you should seek out an educated and experienced trainer who will guide you through the correct techniques and a plan suitable for you. . Makeup Bag Essentials - My go to products for every day glam.

Mighty Mascara It would be rare for me to leave my house without Mascara on. I find I get an instant pick my up the minute I apply it and being fair I need to add some definition to my eyes to look alive. I have two lash hero products to share. First of all is the new MAC Stack Mascara, I honestly think this is my favourite Mascara I've ever used! It's buildable but doesn't go clumpy, it doesn't transfer throughtout the day, doesn't crumble and is so black, literally everything I want in a Mascara, 100% recommend! This next product I was sceptical about due to thigh price tag but it has doubled the length and volume of my lashes. I haven't has extensions since 2021 now and I wouldn't even miss them since using the iGlow Lash Maximizer. You apply the serum along your lash line every day until you get your desired result and then you only need it 2-4 times a week to maintain the length and fullness. It's Vegan and cruelty free and it actually comes with a moneyback guarantee when you purchase directly from their website www.iglow.me

Glowing Skin This isn't strictly makeup but getting your skin care right is as important as applying the makeup that's right for you. I am a long time fan of the PIXI glow tonic. This miracle product brightens, tones and conditions your skin after cleansing. To get that perfect glow I follow this up with an illuminating base or primer and it doesn't get much more glowy than the Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter. This multi-use product offers the blurring benefits of a primer, the glow of a highlighter and the perfecting properties of your favourite filter all in one. Personally I use Shade 2 or 3 for that perfect base

Ready, Set, Go Once you have all of your makeup applied then a setting powder or setting spray are a must for keeping everything put all day. I only use a little powder as I find a little goes a long way and I focus mainly on the undereye but you could also ad a little to T- Zone if you find your skin oily . My favourite Setting powder is the Chanel Poudre Universal it's described as a perfecting powder with an ultra-lightweight and airy texture that mattifies skin without accentuating lines and enhances the complexion with a sheer finish. I find it great for keeping everything where it should be

Get ready for brighter days ahead! A good pair of sunglasses are not just a Spring/Summer wardrobe staple, they are an all-year round, must have essential! Even in the depths of winter, I’ll have a pair of sunglasses on me, especially when driving. They protect your eyes and also the delicate skin around your eyes. Anything to try and avoid fine lines, eh? Definitely go to your local optician and try on what style sunglasses, suit your face shape and complexion. Square, round, wayfarer, cat eye…the list is endless! Think about balancing out your features. For example, someone with strong cheekbones might suit a round, softer pair of sunglasses, but an oval shaped face person might benefit from a pair of square sunglasses to add definition to their face. Don’t be afraid to try on a few different pairs to see what suits you best. Classic Ray Bans

Not a style I personally will be reaching for, but it is difficult to ignore when so many Kim Kardashian Balenciaga A lister celebrities are rocking them. sunglasses

Oversized 70’s

I love an oversized pair

Chloé sunglasses via Brown Thomas

of sun glasses! The bigger the better in my opinion! They are just so glamorous and extra! Chloé is the designer brand that does this style to perfection. Chloé is known for its bohemian, feminine cuts and overall 70’s vibe.

Hope all the Easter Eggs are well gone. I am not going to ramble on this month as the images provided will show ye what we have in the shop. It is the season for Fasinators, shawls and bags as always the advise and banter is free of charge but you will have to pay for the goods

Cat Eye

Another classic shape… Cat Eye sunglasses are flattering on all faces. Retro bold coloured cat eye sunglasses are very on trend right now in colours like red and royal blue. Such strong coloured glasses are not for everyone, but are a real statement and will make you stand out from the crowd.

...La Boheme

This month our Style Spotlight is on La Boheme. Nestled in the heart of Dingle in the visually stunning Green Lane gallery, La Boheme has gained a firm following amongst the fashionistas of Kerry and further afield. To find out more, I sat with owner Elaine Sheehy to find out more! Elaine, it’s a pleasure to have you and La Boheme as this months Style Spotlight! Can you tell our readers a bit about the background of yourself and La Boheme? Certainly! I opened the doors of La Boheme in Dingle in 1998 after spending many year’s working in fashion in London and Dublin in Selfridges and House of Frasier along with Brown Thomas in Dublin. I had studied Business in college so this helped me when starting my own business! La Boheme was originally located on Main St in Dingle for the first 5 years and then when I heard the Green Lane Gallery was available, I knew it was the right move for me. It is a beautiful building, with a very authentic look and feel with the wrought iron spiral stair case leading to a lovely loft upstairs. It also has a very quirky look and feel to it which makes it perfect for a boutique. I will actually be open 24 years this summer can you believe?. When I opened up I didn’t try to hit a particular niche because in Dingle you have to be viable for 12 months of the year so I stocked occasion wear as well as every day wear. I tried to provide every price point to suit all budgets and I think all of those factors are really what has kept me ticking over. I haven’t really made myself a destination for weddings or anything like that either, so you can come into La Boheme and pick up any style of clothing for any age range of adult women. What labels can we expect to see instore? Some of the labels I currently stock are Kate & Pippa, Inwear, Sandwich, Zilch, Whitestuff, Deck, No2moro and Streetone. Kate & Pippa is a beautiful Irish label that is doing particularly well in the shop, all of their dresses have pockets and are button through, very easy to wash requiring no ironing. Deck by Decalage is a beautiful smart leisure wear label which is also Irish. I stock beautiful, affordable occasion dresses starting at €45 up to around €69.95 which I post regularly on social media, they sometimes don’t even make my website because they sell so fast! I do particularly like to stock dresses that can be dressed down with a pair of white trainers and a denim jacket or glammed up with heel’s and a clutch bag for an evening out or a special occasion. We also have a beautiful, affordable range of jewellery from a brand called Envy ranging from €12-€29. In addition to that, we have some beautiful clutch bags priced at €19.95 and cross body bags at €40. After the pandemic there was a huge shift towards smart casual wear with many boutiques rethinking the type of clothing they stocked, what changed for your business in that time?

Coming out of Covid, smart casual is definitely the way things went. Prior to the pandemic I had just started on my new website so during the lockdown in October 2020, the website went live. It proved to be a huge success, it kept us very busy from then until we reopened. I did some features with Maura and Daithí on the Today Show from which the online sales really expanded. I think as well as that, it was a great way to stay in touch with the customers. I’ve had a lot of customers holidaying in Killarney and Kenmare for instance, who had seen my video’s on Instagram or maybe some of my clothing on The Today Show, so they then drove over to shop instore for themselves. They felt an instant rapport with us, a familiarity from having seen us on social media and TV. Some people would ring the store direct to order over the phone when they see a particular piece of ours online, we are always quite happy to take orders like that too. With phone orders, we can talk the customer through sizes as different labels size differently. All in all, the pandemic was an opportunity to reinvent how we did business, reconnect with our customers and like everyone else, we just did the best that we could. What size range do you cater for instore? We carry sizes from XS-XL, that would be up to around size 16 and in some cases a size 18. A lot of our bestselling dresses are one size, they fit a size 10-14 Finally Elaine, can you tell our readers what atmosphere best describes your shop? We are a very family friendly shop! We are always happy see families on holiday, a chance for Mom to shop and try on clothes. We encourage people to come in and browse, never feeling the pressure or expectation to purchase anything. We often get groups of girls who may be staying local in the likes of Benner’s or Skellig’s, they come and visit the store to browse and shop, we have a lot of fun with those types of groups so we would always welcome and encourage it. The girls that work with me have great personalities, they, like myself, enjoy engaging with our customers, it just really makes our day. So what I would like to finish off by saying is, if you are in the area, do pop in for a browse and a chat, no obligation to buy. We will do our very best to guide you along in any way that we can and make selecting an outfit a fun, feel good experience! d r o f g n a Emma L

By Lisa Curran Emma Langford has been on many irish musicians radar for a while now and her star is most certainly always on the rise. Emma has one of the most captivating voices in the country and it’s hard not to fall in love with it as well as her style, honesty, wit and undeniable talent. It is always a privilege to pick her brain! You’ve performed in the kingdom numerous times but you have an amazing intimate gig coming up soon following your songwriting workshop in Valentia over the May bank holiday weekend, tell us where we can catch you? Yes! On the 12th of May Ill be doing a show in Mike The Pies, which will be a full-band affair. We also have aspiring superstar Siún Daly opening for us on the night - she's supported us before and just blew me away so I can't wait to hear her again. For those who may not know you yet, give a description of your unique sound and what to expect at your shows My lyrics draw from the wellspring of theatre, musical theatre, and poetry - they're deeply visual and have a strong story-telling element to them. My sound is compared to everything from Fairport Convention to Laura Marling and Janis Ian. I've been nominated at the RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards for best folk singer two years running, so I gueds that's a good sign? From song to song I drift between folk and trad sounds to rockabilly to 1950s sunshine pop. It's hard to tell folks what to expect, other than a night full of surprises, insightful lyricism, bad jokes, and stories that will whisk us all away to another time and place. What set you on your music journey? Any particular influences? Early on? Musical theatre and my parents' eclectic CD collection including Abba Gold, the best of Garth Brooks, and Les 30

Miserables. In my teens? A desire to have my stories heard, a sense that I had something to say, and a love for connecting with people on a deeper-than-surface level. How was lockdown for you? Did you find it helped your creativity? It stifled me horribly - I felt overwhelmed and anxious and trapped most of the time which is not a good environment for creativity. There were some moments though where I got to connect and collaborate with new people which was really special. I don't think those things would have happened in normal times. Where can people follow you and tune in for updates on all your shows and projects Head to emmalangfordmusic.com/tour for a clear list of all my upcoming shows, and head to facebook.com/ emmalangfordmusic to keep track of all my various projects and adventures!

Championing Women Carers in Kerry “We rise by lifting others.” — Robert Ingersoll The Phoenix Women’s Centre will be Championing Women Carers in Kerry, thanks to Sandy Feet Farm who awarded the Phoenix Women’s Centre €1,000. Sandy Feet Farm invited women’s groups to apply for €1,000 which was to be used to Champion Women. The goal was to support women who were working to improve the standing of women in our community, however they chose to do it. The Phoenix Women’s Centre was chosen for their proposed project to Champion Women Carers in Kerry. The project involves a morning with Astrid Longhurst, themed, ‘Forging Ahead with Hope, Courage and love’. More than 6 in every 10 carers are women. Over 21% of care is provided for 43 or more hours per week and women provide two thirds of this care. (www.nwci.ie). In many instances women sacrifice the opportunity to achieve economic independence or develop their career; they may feel they are not living a life of their own choosing. Being a caregiver impacts the carer, determining the quality and duration of sleep, their ability to work outside the home, their income, their ability to have any meaningful opportunities for self-care, the ability to maintain relationships and to hold onto any semblance of their own identity that is not enmeshed with caring. The aims of this project are:• To deliver a Professionally designed programme • To have a relaxing stress free morning • To learn tools for self care • To create an opportunity for social interaction • To encourage sharing with women who walk in their shoes • To enable women to forge new friendships • To encourage and support the women to form a supportive networking circle facilitated by the Phoenix Womens Centre The date and venue will be announced soon, please contact us if you are interested in attending.
