Its Mother’s day and we have some ideas for you to spoil your mum on her day, and we also have an insight as to how Mother’s day came about, we also check out what’s happening around the county for St Patricks Day. School tours are coming into consideration so we had a quick fly around to see what a good day is out. We chat with young Kerry couple Jazmine and Derek who lost their little daughter Isabella last year. Aidan Dances With The Stars By Marisa Reidy

FOR all the success that Aidan O’Mahony has achieved on the football field for Kerry, he’d be pretty justified in settling into retirement with a well-deserved smug grin on his face. But instead of basking in a career that saw him win five All Ireland titles, three Allianz League titles, 10 Munster championship medals and two coveted All Stars, the Rathmore man seems somewhat embarrassed at the suggestion that he should be justifiably proud of what he has achieved in his blistering career with Kerry. A testament to his shy and humble character, Aidan sees his 13 plus years in the green and gold of Kerry as a privilege and says that while he was honoured to represent his county at the highest level for so long, he is quite happy now to step aside and watch new talent shine through. Aidan’s recent retirement from football has of course allowed him to concentrate on what many may consider an unlikely departure for the famous athlete – taking centre stage on RTE’s Dancing with the Stars. He laughs when asked how on earth it all came about... “I was asked to do it last November and it was definitely months later before I finally said yes. I was like ‘will I , won’t I? Will I, won’t I?’ because I didn’t want to take on something I wouldn’t be suited to,” Aidan tells Connect, just days after making it through Valentine’s Week

of the show. “I was hesitant because, apart from the fact that I had absolutely no dance experience, I knew it was going to be a huge time commitment. I eventually decided to do it because I thought, ‘how often do opportunities like this come along?’ and it was certainly an eye-opener.” In stark contrast to his approach to football, Aidan says that winning the show hasn’t entered his mind, admitting that he considers himself ‘in bonus territory’ with every week he gets through the public vote. Just making it through the gruelling weeks of juggling work as a Garda, home life and rehearsals is reward in itself. “Even though I was told it would be a big time commitment, I couldn’t have known what was really ahead. Because I’m working and my wife is due a baby in a few weeks, I’m literally in Kerry Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and in Dublin for the rest of the week. It means I have about two or three days to learn a whole new routine, so that often means putting in 12hour days in the studio,” Aidan tells Connect. “Then you have the media stuff, interviews and recordings so it’s a huge commitment. You also have the added pressure of not wanting to let your partner down because obviously she has put so much into this and you feel that if you get stressed she gets stressed.” Then, of course, there’s the dreaded live show on Sunday nights...“You could be really confident in your routine going out there on Sunday nights but the live aspect is nerve-wracking. You can miss a step, mess up your frame or slip or something, so it’s very tough,” Aidan said. “Then you have the judges - and let’s face it, that’s not always going to be good, and if you get a low score you’re disappointed for your partner.”

But despite the stress that comes with being a central figure in the hit RTE show, Aidan says he has absolutely no regrets about taking part (well, maybe apart from a few very questionable costumes at the beginning!) “It’s been an incredible experience, whatever happens, and given that I have come from a football background and have absolutely no dance experience, I am very happy with what I have achieved. It has allowed me to be part of something special - that I’ve no doubt will be even bigger and better next year - and to meet people from all different walks of life. I might never get an opportunity like that again.” Much like his decision to take part in the show, equally, Aidan has no regrets about his recent decision to retire from inter-county football after a blustering career. He is happy that the time was right. Again reluctant to accept the praise he deserves for what he gave to his county and supporters throughout his career, Aidan says it was an honour. “I was thinking about retirement since the All Ireland semi final loss to Dublin last year and I knew that I’d have to give it 110% commitment if I was to stay on. I’ll be 37 in June so I figured that it was time for a bit of youth to come through and it was time for me to spend more time with my family,” he said. “Dancing has been a distraction since retiring, but I’m sure when the championship starts up I’ll miss it. Saying that though, I know it was the right decision for me and my family and I left on a high with some incredible memories and some great friends. I have so much respect for the players as I know the commitment it takes to be part of that set up. Not everyone gets to put on a Kerry jersey and I will always remember the feeling it gave me and my family.

My parents would come to games and the happiness it gave them was amazing. When you retire you realise all that and I’m glad I can look back on a great career.” Intent on keeping his ties to sport and the GAA very much alive, Aidan is currently studying for a degree in Strength and Conditioning, but he has one rather more pressing matter on his mind at the minute – the arrival of his first baby. When Aidan spoke to Connect, baby O’Mahony’s birth was just three weeks away and the proud daddy-to-be was only too happy to share his excitement (and some nerves!) ‘It’s an amazing time in our lives and we are really looking forward to it. It’s a fantastic feeling and although we’re both a little nervous, we can’t wait,” Aidan said.“I’ve had plenty of practice with my nieces and nephews but like I tell everyone, it’ll be a lot different this time ‘round because we can’t give this one back. It’s just such a great time because it means that now I’m not playing football, I will have so much more time to concentrate on and enjoy family life. We’re very excited.” Aidan paid huge tribute to his wife Denise, who he says has been his biggest supporter, travelling to Dublin every weekend to cheer him on, as well as coping with him being away so much. “She loves the show and has been such a great support to me. Especially on those weeks when you hit a wall, it’s fantastic that she’s there cheering me on. She’s great and we can’t wait for the next chapter.”

Emotional Health Using Flower Remedies

Dr Edward Bach, M.B., B.S., M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., D.P.H., was a physician and homeopath, who spent his life searching for the purest method of healing. He believed, as do many people today that attitude of one mind plays a very important role in maintaining health. At the time of his death in 1936 he had developed some 38 flower remedies from wild plants, trees and bushes. The purpose of these remedies is to support a person’s struggle with emotional factors such as anxiety or trauma that may impede physical healing. They are also used preventatively during times of stress and are particularly helpful for people who feel generally tired or unwell, without a specific medical diagnoses. The remedies are gentle in action and may be taken by people of all ages, from small children to elderly people. They are also beneficial to animals. People do not have to be physically ill to benefit from the remedies. Many people go through times of difficulty and fatigue, when negativity creeps in. At these times the remedies are invaluable in restoring the balance before physical symptoms appear. When choosing a remedy suitable for your specific needs it helps to focus on the root cause of your particular problem. Try to work out the remedy indicator that applies to the type of person you are as well as your current state of mind. Some of the more popular remedies include: Hornbeam: “Monday Morning Feeling....” Hornbeam is for weariness, mental rather than physical and for those who wake up doubting their ability to face the day’s work. They find it difficult to face up to problems or cope with the day’s program, although in fact, they usual get everything done. Beech: “Intolerant of others, critical....” Beech is for people who constantly criticize, intolerant of other people’s shortcomings and unable to make allowances. They struggle to see the good in situations and can be judgmental. They are convinced they are always right and everybody else is always wrong. Centaury: “Weak willed and easily lead....” Centaury is the remedy for the people who find it difficult to say NO. They let themselves be imposed on and even bullied by others. Anxious to please, they give into others and always “Do the right thing”. They tend to

Health| Connect

lack energy and tire easily Agrimony: “Hide problems behind a cheerful face....” Agrimony is for those that appear carefree and humorous, but this is a mask for their anxieties, worries or even real inner torment, which they may be trying to conceal from themselves and others. They dislike being alone and are very socialable, seeking company as a distraction. White Chestnut: “Unwanted thoughts, mental arguements....” White Chestnut is indicated for obsessive worrying thoughts that seem impossible to control. Sufferers cannot let go of unhappy events or arguments and keep reliving them mentally. This may lead to a troubled mind and it can be difficult to concentrate during the day or to sleep at night Star of Bethlehem: “After effects of shock....” Star of Bethlehem works on the mental or physical as a result of accidents, bad news, sudden disappointments, bereavements, frights, etc. Ideally taken immediately after events, but also works well for delayed effects which may manifest years after the event in the form of physical symptoms. People may be numbed or withdrawn with a sense of loss or grief. Some other remedies in brief include: CHESTNUT BUD: failure to learn from mistakes CRAB APPLE: the cleansing remedy, also for self hatred ELM: overwhelmed by responsibility GENTIAN: discouragement after a setback HOLLY: hatred, jealousy and envy HONEYSUCKLE: living in the past LARCH: living in the past For more information on the Bach Flower remedies or if you need advice on which remedy meets your needs just call into any of our stores and we will be happy to discuss these with you. Until next time, stay healthy,

Remembering Isabella A SOUTH Kerry family who suffered the unbearable loss of their newborn daughter due to a series of heart complications last May has said little Isabella’s death has not been in vain following a significant breakthrough in a hard-fought campaign in her honour. Almost 10 months on from their unthinkable tragedy, Jazmine Sands and her partner Kevin Sheehan have received confirmation from Health Minister Simon Harris that the HSE National Service Plan has committed to the planning and development of vital 20-week ‘anomaly screening’ in all maternity units – a process whereby women receive free, detailed scans in order to rule out any organ deficiencies in their unborn children prior to birth. Despite having to come to terms with her only daughter’s tragic and unexpected death just a few days after she was born, Jazmine tells Connect that she is now convinced that ‘her angel was here for a reason.’ A few months after losing Isabella to a series of heart defects , including a condition known as Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), Jazmine and her partner Kevin set out to ensure no other parents would have to endure the same fate. While fully accepting that Isabella could not have been saved due to a series of other complications, Jazmine says that a 20–week anomaly scan can detect Hypoplastic in other newborns, thus allowing parents plan ahead and access expert medical treatment in Dublin, which could ultimately save their lives. ‘Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome’ is a congenial heart defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. As the baby develops during pregnancy, the left side of the heart does not form correctly.

“Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, we knew that there was nothing that could have been done for Isabella, but had the anomaly scan been available to us we could have been prepared and would have planned things in advance,” Jazmine told Connect. “For example, I would have had Isabella in Dublin and would have had more time with her, but because she was born by Caesarean Section I could not follow her to Dublin until two days later. I feel I lost time with my daughter because this crucial screening is not in place. The staff in Crumlin were unbelievable, but it really wasn’t fair on them either because they were just not prepared.” 14

CONNECT KERRY March 2017

In an amazing show of strength and selflessness, Jazmine set about campaigning for the 20-week anomaly scan to be made available at all maternity hospitals here, explaining that it can literally save babies’ lives.

“This special scan looks for defects in all the vital organs, which I assumed every expectant mother was being screened for anyway, but that isn’t that case,” Jazmine said. “In cases where Hypoplastic is detected at 20 weeks, it allows families to put a plan in place whereby they have their baby in Dublin and the newborn is then immediately operated on. What we want to do is ensure that babies are not being born with this condition, unknown to parents and doctors, and dying en route from Kerry to Dublin, which can so easily happen. This simple scan can prevent such tragedies from happening and can save babies lives.” Jazmine’s campaign snowballed following the immense response to a blog which she admits she started to help with her grief and to help other parents in the same situation. Little did she know that a few months later she would be instrumental in changing the government’s approach to maternity care – and hopefully contributing to saving newborns lives.

“I’m pretty proud of myself that they have actually listened to our story and are committed to doing something about it. That’s the most important thing for us – not having other families to go through this,” she said. “If we can save more families from this unbearable tragedy then I know our angel was here for a reason.” Paying tribute to Kerry County Councillor Damien Quigg and Deputy Louise O’Reilly in Dublin for their relentless support of her campaign, Jazmine confirmed that she is due to meet with newly appointed National Women & Infants Health Programme (NWIHP) director, Kilian McGrane this month to discuss the implementation of the strategy across Ireland on a phased basis.

“If we can get this done in Isabella’s name, that will be absolutely amazing. I know she’s driving this campaign,” Jazmine said.

Kind Wishes this Mother’s Day On 26 March, families in Kerry and beyond will be celebrating Mother’s Day. It is a day to appreciate the most important lady in our lives. Sr. Evelyn McGuire of the Presentation Convent Lixnaw was kind enough to give us an insight into Mother’s Day Mother’s Day was originally known as ‘Mothering Sunday’. On this day, young girls who were out in service in great houses returned home. Once a year they returned home with their wages of seven shillings and six pence. The young girls brought hot cross buns to provide sustenance for their journey and the cross to protect them from trouble-makers. En route they picked flowers to give to their families. These young girls were seen as ‘little mothers’ to their families, hence the title ‘Mothering Sunday’. Mother’s Day we know today became a public holiday in the U.S in 1914, brought about by a lady named Anna Jarvis. Anna’s mother was an activist and cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the Civil War. When she died, Anna wanted to continue her mother’s work so set aside a day to honour all mothers. She wanted people to realize the greatness of motherhood. It is lovely to see people of all ages celebrate this special day. It is a family occasion where the Mother is the ‘Lady of the Day.’ She is remembered for her loving care, unselfishness, kindness and virtue.

Beauty Corner Hi Lovelies,

Spring is in the air at last! With the evenings getting brighter and warming up a little it’s time to shed the old and encourage newer, glowing skin to the surface by exfoliating the face and body. In removing dead skin cells which sit on the surface we enable moisturiser to penetrate the skin deeper and therefore produce much more effective results. Before using a facial scrub it’s important to cleanse the skin thoroughly with your normal cleanser (either a wash or a fluid). Next, apply a warm face cloth to soften up the skin before applying your scrub. Use light circular motions to massage in the scrub paying particular attention to the areas that have a build up of dry skin (usually around the nose, chin and T-zone). Rinse the skin clean afterwards and pat dry rather than rubbing the skin. Finally, apply your favourite serum and cream and bask in the glory of your beautiful skin! When it comes to body exfoliation I find the body brush an absolute must have. Used on dry skin before the shower simply brush in upwards motions (towards the heart). Be careful to avoid delicate areas and do not use too much pressure. As with the face, this will remove dead skin cells and help our body creams to work more effectively. This is a great circulation booster and a super detox for the skin. Getting that skin prepped now before summer couldn’t be easier and when we do finally feel warm enough to get the limbs out from our winter clothes you will thank yourself! Take care and see you next month,

Lorraine xx

Hi readers, As a godmother to 7 amazing god children I have been sponsor to a fair share of said children, which of course has involved dressing up for the special occasion. Personally, I am a lover of dresses, all shapes, colours and textures. So, if you find you are going to be part of the confirmation ceremony, pick a dress that can be teamed up with different colours. A good example would be matching up a blue dress, you have a wide choice accessories to choose from, anything from nude, silver, gold, and even pink. If by chance you can get exact colour of the royal blue in shoe and bag, grab it. Those of you who are blessed with height, could go for something like a smart trouser suit, again comfortable but stylish. I suppose what I am trying to say is, just enjoy dressing for confirmation and maybe just check what you have in your wardrobe. You can call inif you want some suggestions on matching. We will do our best to sort you out. Now is a good time with all the new stock on the shelves. Funny thing is my biggest decision now is how many scarves can I wear in a day. I just love the new range here in the shop Until next month. Keep smiling, Carmel xxx

Austin Stacks Club Celebrates Centenary 2017 marks the year Austin Stacks Hurling & Football Club celebrates its centenary, and on Friday 24th February the club held one of its main events of the year – a corporate lunch – which was held at Ballygarry House Hotel. 430 patrons enjoyed a champagne reception and lunch, the event continuing in true Rockie style ‘til late into the night. There was excellent entertainment throughout the meal, with MC for the day, Darragh Moloney (RTE Sports Presenter/Commentator) co-ordinating proceedings. Events got underway with a video of Austin Stacks 100th birthday, a celebration of the history of our club which can be accessed on the club website on the following link: www.stacks100.ie.

Darragh Moloney then introduced a panel discussion with Darragh O’Se, Ogie Moran, Denny Allen and Kieran Donaghy comparing their football experiences down the years and how the game has changed. A few stories were also shared with the appreciative audience. All present had the opportunity of participating in the raffle, many excellent sponsored prizes were on offer (golf outing to Druids Glen; signed jersey; Munster vs Toulouse rugby tickets etc.), with this writer being one of the lucky winners on the day. Dr. Con Murphy of Cork presented Mikey Sheehy with the no. 14 Kerry Jersey. The Corporate Lunch was a very well organised and enjoyable function for all present, congratulations and well done to Liam Lynch and his team, J.P. Brick, Frank Stephenson, Ger O’Keeffe, Mairead Fernane, Bernie Mannix and many others. Thanks to Ballygarry House Hotel for their excellent facilities and professionalism.

We in Austin Stacks Hurling & Football Club look forward to many more events both on and off the pitch in Connolly Park and on “The Street of Champions” during our centenary year.

Rockies - Naughtons, Shanahans and Jackie Power

McMahons - Elma, Tadhg, Brian and Tim.

ROCKIES ABU!

Club Chairman, Liam Lynch spoke about club development - past, present and future and this was followed by a panel discussion based on the All-Ireland Football Final between Dublin and Kerry of 1978 and that infamous and legendary goal by Mikey Sheehy catching Paddy Cullen off his line. We were treated to a video of that event, with special guests Paddy Cullen and Robbie Kelliher of Dublin joining proceedings to discuss what happened that day. A video was also shown of a recent re-enactment by these players (kitted out in their Kerry/Dublin gear – some sight!) in Croke Park of that famous football incident. The question lingers whether a free should have been awarded at all, one for the annals of football history! Other football legends from those years present were Jimmy Kerrigan, Coleman Corrigan, Denny Allen, Ogie Moran, Eoin Liston, Ger O’Keeffe, Ger Power, Tony O’Keeffe, Dr. Con Murphy, as well as many present day Kerry footballers, with Diarmuid O’Shea,Kerry County Board Vice-Chairman. The meal followed before which Fr. Padraig Walsh, Parish Priest of St. Brendans remembered past and present members of Austin Stacks Club. 24

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT MATTRESS Buying a mattress can be an arduous task with so many options and endless terminology from Pocket Springs to Memory Foam and everything in between. The most important thing to remember when choosing the right mattress is comfort, comfort, comfort...

The key factors influencing your mattress decision: The Pocket Spring count of your mattress which gives support & The mattress material which can range from Gel, Memory Foam to Natural Latex or a combination for comfort

Some definitions to help you understand your choice: POCKET SPRUNG contains individual springs, each sewn into its own pocket of fabric. This provides much more support and comfort than the conventional Coil Spring Mattress. The higher the amount of pocket springs the better the support.

MEMORY FOAM MATTRESS MATERIAL is made from a hi-tech material which softens and molds to body heat, reduces pressure points and increases comfort by providing a warm and cushioned sleeping surface.

GEL MATTRESS MATERIAL has become increasingly common in recent years due to demand for “cooler” sleep. They use gel in the comfort layer of the mattress. The gel comes in many forms, from layers of pure gel to surrounding pocket springs.

LATEX MATTRESS MATERIAL can be found in the comfort layer, support layer or both. Latex offers similar conforming ability to Memory Foam, but is easier for changing sleep positions. One of the biggest “selling points” of natural latex is that it is a healthy and safe material to sleep on.

TOP 5 TIPS TO PICK THE PERFECT MATTRESS! 1. Decide on a budget! Prices of mattresses vary. The most expensive may not always be the best for you.

2. Try the mattress! Go instore, look around and ask questions. Staff are there to assist you with any queries.

3. Aim for the highest spring count you can afford. (Add some amazing Pocket Spring Pillows!)

4. Understand the composition of your mattress but choose the most comfortable for you.

5. If you already have a base or frame, make sure you bring your measurements with you mattress shopping!

John Egan Memorial Appeal Underway

Sneem GAA club’s fundraising campaign to erect a bronze memorial to the late Kerry GAA star, John Egan is advancing well. The Memorial Committee reports that to-date just over half of the €30,000 cost involved has already been raised. This is mainly due to some very generous donations from companies and individuals both from Kerry and elsewhere. Our Memorial Committee has also contacted all of John Egan’s County team mates between 73 and 84 and to date quite a number have already responded with generous contributions. It is hoped that all his team mates will be able to attend the unveiling ceremony in Sneem on June 17th 2017 at 5-00pm. The memorial committee is now appealing to all clubs and the many thousands of ‘John Egan fans’ who would have enjoyed his many outstanding displays during the Golden Era of Kerry football, to consider making a modest donation. Due to the fact that the membership of our own club is less than 100 and that the total population of the Sneem Parish is a mere 750 souls we need a lot of help us to raise the balance of funds required. Donations can be sent to Sneem GAA club, C/o Tim O Sullivan, Sneem . An acknowledgement will be sent to you by return of post. We also hope that all ‘John Egan fans’ will be able to join us in Sneem for the unveiling of the Memorial in June.

RECFEST

This March will host Kerry Enterprise Month and in co-operation, HQ Tralee and IT Tralee would like to introduce: RecFest 2017. Whistles & wheezes, sniffles & sneezes We know that the word wheeze, the hallmark symptom of Asthma is used imprecisely by parents and professionals and other caregivers. It is assumed by the above that they mean the same thing. Caregivers of children often find it difficult to distinguish between the whistles, the wheezes, the rattles and the ruttles and it is often assumed that they mean the same thing, this is untrue.

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry If therapeutic trials of treatment are to be performed they should be focused and children should not be kept on an unproven treatment infinitely. Therapeutic trials should only be carried out when objective measurements such as Peak Flow measurements cannot be made e.g. in under 5 year olds, trials of flixotide 100mg twice daily for three weeks then 200mg twice daily for further three weeks. If there is no response with complete compliance (patient actually taking the drug) then one can eliminate the diagnosis of Asthma. If symptoms have abated and subsequently reappear and respond to Flixotide then and only then can a diagnosis of Asthma be made.

There are three goals for the successful treatment of Asthma: (1)The child should grow normally. If the patient is on inhaled Steroids of less than 400mics a day it is probably safe. Steroid side effects tend to occur starting at the above dose and more but this won’t be the same for every child. It is also known if the dose of the inhaled steroid is greater than needed for the degree of airway for the severity of Asthma or if the diagnosis is erroneous than the risk of the side effects are increased.

A wheeze is a polyphonic musical sound like the sound coming from a violin or from a squeaky door opening and closing or from a concertina. Is there such an entity as a cough that is asthmatic without a wheeze? In all probability there is not. A number of children are put on both Steroid and Ventolin Inhalers indefinitely for the above show little or no benefit. Sometimes there might be a partial benefit and because there is a partial therapeutic response or even what is deemed to be a full response people assume that it constitutes a diagnosis of Asthma, where the child may have got better anyway and children are often left on these drugs at infinitum.

Asthma should only be diagnosed probably after the age of two with certainty.

(2) The child must reach his/her academic potential. If he/she is missing school and affecting this than it is a sub-treatment of Asthma. (3) Must be able to participate in sports of his/her choosing to the best of his/her ability. Parents often limit their child’s participation because it induces an attack from exercise induced Asthma or pollen in the field. Children with Asthma should be treated with a Spacer. The preventative inhalers are usually inhaled Steroids and the reliever is usually Ventolin. Children under four should have a Spacer with a mask, over four they can use a mouth piece.

To diagnose asthma one must demonstrate reversibility of airway obstruction. This is usually done by a peak flow meter. Children over five can be successfully trained in this with the supervision of parents. If one gives a child the peak flow meter and instructs them on the use of it with the supervision of the parent and measure peak flow a few times a day for two weeks and you can demonstrate a variability of an increase of 20% with or without Ventolin or drugs like it then the child can be said to have Asthma. Without this variability, the diagnosis of Asthma cannot be made.

30

CONNECT KERRY March 2017

If there is financial constraints in obtaining a Spacer than a plastic spring water bottle will suffice, if a hole is made at the bottom to fit the inhaler there is no difference in effect. The effect of any of these Spacers is to lessen the deposition of the drug in the mouth and more if it goes into the airway. In up to 20% of asthmatics with associated Allergic Rhinitis, treatment of the Allergic Rhinitis alone can improve Asthma.

PEARLY WHITES

HEALTHCARE MATTERS

Many dental patients often wonder what is the best way to plan

Effective Supplements

a dental makeover.

Firstly, attention should be directed at getting all the teeth and gums into a healthy state. This is done in consideration with the patients overall health and wellbeing. Gum disease, if present, must be brought under control with improved oral hygiene. Teeth that need removal are usually extracted at this stage. There may be a need to have a temporary denture or bridge until such time as the mouth is ready to have the permanent treatment plan carried out. There are many different methods used to restore function and good aesthetics to the teeth. If teeth are to be whitened using whitening gels, it is prudent to do this early on during the treatment plan. This will mean that if you need dentures, or porcelain teeth on crowns, bridges or implants, the colours can be matched together. The best treatment plans are ones that will give the patient an end result that can easily be maintained in good health. As always, ask your dentist about your treatment options.

Hi everyone, Welcome to this month’s instalment of Health Matters. After a flu ridden winter period, we find that many of our customers are looking for treatments to boost their energy levels and immunity for the Spring months ahead. Whilst there are many supplements which are of huge benefit in helping to re-energise our systems after illness, one of which I will explain here, there is some positive lifestyle improvements we can make to help combat lethargy after illness. • Exercise regularly. • Eat a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables and low in saturated fats. • Drink 8 glasses of water per day. • Try to get between 7 – 9 hours sleep at night. One of the most effective supplements in targeting plummeting energy levels is Revive Active. BUSINESSES GO LIVE!

Tax Relief on Home Improvements

Live streaming will just get bigger and bigger in 2017. Not only is it a highly effective way for businesses to connect and engage with consumers, it’s accessible to everyone with a smart phone now on Social Media. Companies should be doing live events for product launches, Q & A sessions and even “Behind The Scenes” sessions in which they introduce their employees to consumers. The two keys to making sure your live events are effective: 1. Ensure that users are engaged at all times. You can do that by encouraging users to ask questions and make comments throughout the event, and also by offering free and valuable content such as competitions, exclusive news and free samples. 2. Ensure it looks good and is rehearsed – Don’t wing it, as it’s live, you need to put the effort in to make sure your broadcast goes well, including rehearsing, timing and crucially how your business looks (Tip: Don’t sacrifice on putting in place the right lighting). As we enter Spring it is the time of year where focus turns to home improvements and gardening. It is important to remember the HRI Scheme. What Tax Relief is available?

The HRI (Home Renovation Scheme) is available for expenditure between €5,000(Incl. VAT) and €34,050(Incl. VAT) provided your builder is HRI registered. Tax Relief is 13.5% of expenditure, essentially between €595(€5,000) and €4,050 (€34,050).

02/06/2016 2

What Works are covered?

Most home renovations are covered and include the following: • Home Renovations • Home Extensions • Driveways • Landscaping • Conservatories

How is Tax Relief Claimed?

Tax relief is spread over the two years after the works are paid for i.e. 50% Year 1 and 50% Year 2.

Do Rental Properties Qualify?

Finance Act 2014 extended HRI Scheme to rental properties so landlords can claim for improvement works carried out on their rental properties.

Important Points:

- You need to Talk to your builder, as most will fill out details online. - Improvements carried out directly by yourself will not qualify. - Tax Relief is a tax credit so you must pay tax to benefit from relief. NB: You won’t be entitled to HRI tax credit unless your builder is HRI registered and information is completed online! John Canty & Co. Connect Recommends It’s March and it’s also the month where many seasonal business’s begin to get back to normality, so this months Connect recommends visits Sammys Restaurant on Inch beach, a little pocket of heaven on your way to Dingle. It was a windy blustery day with the tail end of storm Ewan blowing the waves of inch beach high in the sky, we found a seat by the window and enjoyed the view, while blustery, the beach was home to a few brave kite surfers who took on the weather and surfed in delight. It was time to choose from the menu and wow what a choice, from fresh fish and chips to healthy salads and home made burgers. I choose the traditional fish and chips while the other company in the party went for the home made burger, cooked fresh so there was a little wait one would normally get impatient but the friendly atmosphere and chat from the staff was very enjoyable. The fish was mouthwatering while the burger was somewhat an obstacle course with the amount packed into the burger bun which was enjoyed with each bite, the desert menu was amazing but I choose to say no as I was at my limit from my main course, All in all it was a wonderful experience and one I would highly recommend to ad to your list when your considering a trip round the wild Atlantic way this summer, it’s ideally suited to families with kids of all ages and I certainly look forward to going back on a sunny evening to enjoy some more. If you would like to find out more take a trip along the Dingle road take a left for inch beach and you reach your destination, they also have accommodation so the shoe package can be yours. The Brow Fairy Ecuri Microblading & ILAH brow restyling

We see the photos of celebrities every day envious of theirs, we stare at complete strangers curious as to where they’ve had theirs done – what am I talking about? Eyebrows! To say it’s a phenomenon that’s becoming increasingly more popular is an understatement. For those of us that are not blessed with Cara Delevigne’s enviable full defined brows or who maybe got a bit ‘tweezer happy’ in the naughties, or indeed if you’re recovering from an illness that has left you with little or in some cases, no eyebrows – there is a solution! Eyebrow Microblading is a semi-permanent treatment where natural looking hair strokes are created 36

Freshly Dried Laundry Outside, All Year Round Recruiting for the Best Candidates Employers when recruiting should be mindful of the following key factors when trying to recruit the best employees. • Analyse your reputation as an employer. Where there is shortages of talent in certain key sectors you as the employer may have to sell to the benefits of working for you. • Be open to integrating diversity into your workplace. This entails putting together a work force from different backgrounds. An employer that offers diversity will become known as an employer of choice and will access employees with different back grounds, talent and experiences. • Recruitment has dramatically changed over the last 20 years with the arrival of social media and digital recruitment channels. If you don’t have presence on an online platform to advertise and attract candidates for your role you will have very little success of guaranteeing your role has been seen by the best possible talent on the market. If you are active online and on social media, use it to promote your companies values and your corporate social responsibility updates. Top Talent will often research a company to get an idea of the culture and values to see if they are the right fit for that company or not. • Do a detailed job analysis in order to draft the job description. A good job description which will become your advert will help to attract the best calibre candidates and hopefully deter candidates that are not suitable from applying. • The shortlisted CV’s can either do a telephone screening process or can be called directly for an interview. Face to Face interviews still win out as the most trusted format • Ensure you ask questions relating to the job description and ask competency based questions which require the candidate to describe specific tasks or situations. • More companies now use psychometric and personality tests such as Occupational personality questionnaires to establish if a candidate is the right fit for an organisation. • I cannot stress the importance of conducting reference checks before you make a hire. Unfortunately most companies these days will only confirm title and dates but you should always try to do as much background checking as you possibly can.

THE ART OF ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

Caroline tell us how the idea for the book came about? I know from experience that a lot of managers end up in their roles or positions without any training. I saw a gap in the market for a user friendly go-to guide for Managers and HR managers. This book is a valuable resource for all people managers (whether you manage one person, a department team, or many thousands), and should be on your desk as a ‘go to guide’ that you can dip into as needed to remind you of the key questions that should be asked in different situations throughout the employment journey. Over 17 chapters, ‘The Art of Asking the Right Questions’ both asks and answers everyday questions which re-occur in the workplace. It also discusses key HR issues including Hiring, Induction, Coaching, Grievances and Disciplinary procedures. With simple concise answers, end of chapters Top Tips Summaries and insightful illustrations, it should be on every people manager’s desk as a handy ‘go to’ reference to assist in solving and resolving HR issues within today’s complex modern work environment. There is also a ‘Personal Action Plan Review’ at the end of the book to help readers self-assess their own skills and current management techniques. Ultimately it is an invaluable resource for management at every level.

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry be able to keep our head office in Kerry, work with our nationwide customer base and have the team and skillset to operate successfully at this level with considerable growth . We are now holding a Leinster HR Forum in Malahide on March 10th and are expecting it to be a great success. What do you do to relax and unwind? Luckily I live very near Ballyheigue beach, which is my favourite place to go. I am blessed to have a great circle of family & friends, with whom I love to socialise. I love to cook and to entertain for people and very often have guests to my home for dinner.

We in Connect wish Caroline every success with her book and indeed her growing business. Photos by Domnick Walsh

What would your advice be for people thinking about writing a book? Think about it from a readers perspective. Think about your audience and how they will use the book. It is important how the book adds value to the person who has purchased it. Personally I would like to think that my book does what is says on the tin.

The HR Suite Team

It’s a great advice book for every office desk, can people order it online or is it available in the shops? The book is available in The HR Suite head office in Tralee , in Eason’s, in First Chapter, in local Supervalu’s on line on our website www.thehrsuiteonline.com and also on line on www. successstore.com. This is the go-to guide book for all people managers in business. Many managers conducting interviews use it as a guide to ask the right questions. It also has been bought by parents for students in college. It can be used for self-development, skills improvement and career change & development. You’ve just opened an office in Dublin how is that doing? We have a strong customer base right throughout the country. Our head office remains in Kerry as we grow our nationwide presence. It was a natural progression to open an office in Dublin because we had a large amount of clients in the Leinster area with considerable HR queries. Our growth is considerable in the Dublin market and this works well with the Kerry office, where we anticipate the growth to remain the same as 2017. We are delighted to 38
