Gráinne Seoige Launches Grace Diamonds by Marissa Reidy

WHEN Gráinne Seoige speaks about her new business venture, Grace Diamonds, you immediately sense the excitement and passion she has for her new-found career. Being the astute business woman she is, this is of course a money-making venture for the former TV star, but a single conversation with the Galway beauty is enough to know that Grace Diamonds is so much more than that. There’s a genuine excitement in Gráinne’s voice when she talks about the process of helping couples design their unique engagement rings and seeing their reaction to the finished product - a feeling she says comes from knowing that they are experiencing exactly what she and South African fiancé Leon Jordaan did when they designed their own, custommade ring. Grace Diamonds, Ireland’s newest high-end, bespoke, custom designed diamond jewellery dealer, was borne out of the couple’s very personal experience in choosing an engagement ring, as Gráinne explained. “Leon proposed with a loose diamond, which I had never even seen before, and the idea was that I design whatever ring I wanted,” Gráinne told Connect. “It was such a romantic, exciting, wonderful approach and it was something that just tickled and excited me. This was something that was completely unique to us and the reaction to the ring was phenomenal. It was so much better than I had even expected.” Gráinne’s engagement ring was created by leading South African diamond experts, Your Diamonds – the company that later went on to become partners with Gráinne and her finance to make Grace Diamonds a reality. Gráinne explained that it was her fiancé Leon who first suggested the business venture and it wasn’t long before she was completely on board. “Leon, like all South Africans, is very entrepreneurial, so for him it was instant,” she said. 4

CONNECT KERRY February 2017

“Once we decided to do it, I trained for two years in all aspects of the diamond business until I felt I was ready. I’m so excited about Grace Diamonds because we really believe in what we do and I’ve loved getting the word out there and promoting the business. It’s like everything I do – I’m giving it everything I have.” As well as custom-made engagement rings, which is the mainstay of the business, Grace Diamonds also offers clients an amazing collection of signature necklaces, bracelets and occasion pieces, with the diamonds sourced and certified from the world class South African diamond area of Pretoria. Key to the success and popularity of the new business is that the service provided is extremely personal, with Gráinne taking a very hands-on approach. She explained that she is absolutely loving connecting with couples who are planning their big day, working hand in hand to create not only an amazing piece of jewellery, but a feeling that she knows only too well. “It’s absolutely amazing how much people put into designing their own ring and what’s fabulous is seeing how just how much the finished product really means to them” she said. “This is a chance for people to make something really unique and special. It’s an heirloom that they can pass down to their children and grandchildren. What they have created has so much meaning. For me, for example, my ring not only symbolises my partnership with Leon but the care and thought that we put into it. That’s very special.”

Gráinne explained that consultations between she and her clients are mostly done online, with huge interaction from both sides until the client is 100% happy with the design. Then a 3D design of the ring – or whatever piece they may have chosen - is shown to the client from all angles, and when entirely happy, the piece is created in South Africa within approximately two weeks. This hands-on approach has meant that Gráinne has become extremely close to her clients, telling Connect that the very first couple she designed an engagement ring for have since returned, this time to design an eternity ring as they are expecting their first child. But what about those who feel that a custom-made engagement ring with specially sourced diamonds are simply out of their league? Not the case, Gráinne explained. “Our clients tell us what their budget is and we work with that to design a ring. Whatever the budget, whether it’s €2,000 or €20,000, the key is that we work with them to design something that is unique and is not a mass produced product,” Gráinne insisted. “We’re not pushing anything on anyone - you tell us what you can afford and we make the ring to fit.”

One man who has jumped on board to support the launch the Grace Diamond brand is Kerry fashion designer, Don O’Neill, a great friend and supporter of Gráinne. The pair collaborated on a unique collection of beautiful bridal jewellery last Autumn, which aimed to complement and reflect the boho chic, beach theme of Don’s Spring 2017 THEIA Couture bridal collection. The Sea Queen Collection, was inspired by Gráinne and Don’s mutual love of the west coast and stories of the wild and mysterious powerful and accomplished Sea Queen of Connaught – Grace O’Malley, also an inspiration for the Grace brand itself. It was an instant hit and catapulted Grace Diamonds onto the world-wide bridal scene. “It was so, so wonderful to collaborate with Don, who is an extremely good friend of mine. I love him dearly and I am so grateful for the opportunity he gave me,” she said. “Everyone knows how well loved Don is here at home, but it’s the very same in the US and he is a genuine friend of mine. He suggested I create a jewellery collection for his bridal collection and it was just amazing. I was hugely excited to do it and next thing you know my collection is in front of some of the biggest, bridal fashion influences in the world. It even featured in The New York Times and French Vogue. It was such a wonderful opportunity and I will be forever grateful to Don for that.”

Of course with Valentine’s Day on the horizon, Gráinne is extremely busy helping loved-up couples create their very own special pieces, all the while working on her brand new signature collection. It’s been an amazing few months since the official launch of Grace Diamonds, and with the small matter of her own wedding to plan, there’s certainly no chance of Gráinne Seoige’s sparkle fading any time soon! unnecessary burden on our bodies detoxification process and your immune system, including the skin. Some of these chemicals can build up and remain in the body for long periods of time before they are completely eliminated. Most of us use several skin and body care products daily, but when was the last time you looked at the ingredients in any of the products you are using? By choosing to use natural or organic products you can be assured this will have a positive effect on your body and your skin. Becoming an informed consumer allows you to make smart choices when purchasing your natural product. There is a vast selection of natural products available and are just as fabulous and effective as the more widely known brands. Some of our favourite natural moisturisers, cleansers, body washes, etc in-store include HAREBELL HERBS, DR MAHERS, DR HAUSCHKA, TRILOGY, KINVARA AND ANTIPODES. Remember healthy skin comes from within so some important supplements to consider include Omega 3:6:9 we would recommend ESKIMO, VIRIDIAN or NORDIC NATURALS. Take a ZINC supplement to help maintain healthy skin, hair and nails. VITAMIN B12 may help with the reduction of tiredness and fatigue ( which can show on your skin). POMEGRANATE EXTRACT is high in antioxidants and may help to reduce spots and wrinkles on the skin. SELENIUM: this mineral is essential to the body’s antioxidant defence. May help prevent DNA from oxidative damage.

The skin is the largest organ in the body and covers approximately 20 square feet. It protects us from the elements, regulates the body temperature and allows us the sensations of touch, heat and cold. It is a passageway that helps rid our body of unwanted toxins and prevents chemical and waste build up. If our pores are congested and blocked with chemicals and pollutants this can prevent the skin from functioning properly. Every gust of wind, cough and blast from exhaust pipes hits our skin first and it is our first line of defence.

REVIDOX is an all natural skin supplement. It addresses concerns associated with cell ageing which is backed by clinical studies. One of these recent studies involving Irish consumers who took one capsule each day for two months noted the following benefits:

“Poor diet, poor sleep and stress will effect your skin so address these if they are an issue!”

YOUNGER SKIN: A whopping 72% noticed their skin looked younger.

Like every other part of our body, our skin responds to care and attention. Bright, Vibrant skin can signal health and vitality. Looking after it, can help slow down the ageing process, keeping it healthier for longer (and keeps us looking better!). What we put on our skin is just as important as what we put into our bodies, both have an effect on our overall health. Remember your skin absorbs about 60% of what you put on it and when these products contain artificial ingredients this places an

SKIN WRINKLES: 84% experienced an improvement in the appearance of their skin wrinkles. SKIN MOISTURE: 50% noticed an improved skin moisture level.

EFFECTIVE: 76% of participants agreed the product is effective. Call in to any of our stores where you will find all of these supplements and we are always happy to discuss which product will suit your specific requirements.

To the Dress

1. Have an idea of what you want before you step foot in a bridal shop

Adapt the Dress By Emily Keane

Are you looking for a unique wedding dress? Those perfect shoes or your groom’s smart suit? We took the time to speak with Helena Slattery, Fundraising and Volunteer Co-Ordinator with AdaptKerry Charity Shop. They recently opened a wedding room in the store and supply a limited collection of bridal wear. Tell me about Adapt Kerry? Adapt opened at the end of June 2016. We sell clothes, furniture, bric-a-brac and wedding dresses. All proceeds go to Adapt Women’s Refuge in Tralee. Tell me about the wedding dresses? We just opened a wedding room in the store, to give the customer privacy while shopping for a dress. They come in a variety of styles, ivory, champagne, white. Each dress is original and cater for all sizes. What are the price ranges? There is a price for every budget. The dresses still have the original price tags on them and Adapt are selling them at a fraction of the price.

2. Come with ideas from magazines, google searches, suggestions from family and friends but don’t take too much advice as you don’t want to have your own judgement clouded. 3. Most experts would advise you start looking around eight months before your big day to give yourself enough time for alterations. 4. On the other hand, if you buy your dress too early, you run the risk of second-guessing your choice in the months leading up to the wedding day. So time your bridal shopping appropriately. 5. Would you like to get the dress of your dreams designed? It’s not impossible to get a custom gown made in a short amount of time, but you may have to pay extra for it. If you’re getting married in the next few months and really want a custom gown, some places will do it, but will charge you a steep rush fee. Factor that into your budget, if that’s the case. 6. Be clear on your budget and say it out loud — to yourself, your friends, and the bridal shop associates, so they’re clear about what your boundaries are. And don’t forget to factor in alterations to your budget. 7. Once you’ve found your dress, the next step will be to arrange appointment times for fittings. You’ll probably need two to three fittings to really get your dress to your perfection. But if, after the third fitting, you’re not absolutely thrilled with the way things are, don’t be afraid to ask for another session. You’re entitled to have your dress just how you want it. 8. Most of all enjoy the experience and ensure you have memories that last a lifetime.

Do you provide any bridal accessories? Yes, we have a range of bridal shoes, veils, bridesmaid dresses and flower girl dresses. Do you provide any menswear or children’s? There are a limited number of men’s suits and pageboy outfits. Do you need to book an appointment to view the wedding merchandise? We would advise the public to contact the store, if they’re interested in viewing the wedding dresses. We’d like to set aside the time so the shop assistants can help you to your full advantage. Every bride wants to feel special on her wedding day. There is no reason why a bride shouldn’t check out these one off pieces at Adapt. Adapt Kerry Charity Shop is located on the Matt Talbot Road in Tralee. 14

We all love a good wedding and often the day begins with a lovely ceremony and then it’s on to the hotel or maybe the whole event is in the same venue, so with this in mind it extremely important to keep your guests entertained, extras at the reception are very important and there is nothing nicer than a welcome drinks reception with some nice background music, maybe a sweet cart to entertain the younger guests or maybe the bigger kids amongst the group.. Why not make your pre-dinner drinks reception stylishly different and wow your guests with the beautiful sound of the saxophone. John Collins is a saxophonist with a modern rich tone and high quality sound. Tralee born John is an experienced, trained musician. He played in London for wedding receptions and social events for many years. He now plays regularly at Ballyroe Heights and other venues throughout Kerry. With over 1400 tunes to suit everyone, ranging from contemporary to classic songs, John will create the perfect atmosphere on your special day. He is happy to include something special for the bride and groom. Add a touch of class to your pre-dinner drinks reception and give your guests a unique and memorable experience with something different. Check out a sample of John’s music on YouTube (john Collins sax player Kerry), Facebook (john Collins sax player Tralee), or contact John on 086 2282117. For those with a sweet tooth there are lots of options now, the sweet cart became a big thing a few years ago but this has developed into a sweet table with lots of varieties available to suit all pallets, it’s now stretched out to ferris wheel, pyramids and sweet trees the list is endless and if your big day is in the Summer Sun the traditional ice cream van has become a favourite too, for more ideas and information on how to book these contact Patsy at ‘A Different Day Confectionary’ 087 7537417 So think outside the box and go that extra mile it’s all about being different...

Mary Stapleton Foley, Office Manager, The HR Suite (and renowned fashionista)

It’s the month of love when we all go the extra mile to show someone how much we love them but is it for everyone? We ask some well-known personalities in Kerry what they think of the whole Valentine routine. Brendan Fuller, Radio Kerry Presenter

“February the 14th is the time of year we begin to feel a bit of warmth in the sunshine, and we can finally see some green in the leaves but we need something to give us that bit of a boost into the spring. Cherishing the most important people in your life is the best way to do that. It reminds us not to take each other for granted and makes us appreciate what we have. Myself and Eve have tried to make memories each year. Last year we celebrated it in Galway and the year before that we went to Bantry. This year will be different because we’ve moved in together so maybe we’ll stay put for a change.”

Toireasa Ferris, Sinn Féin Councillor

“Unfortunately for my other half I don’t really buy into commercialised romantic gestures. In response he tends to buy me a box of his favourite chocolates. I can’t remember if I have ever marked the day for him. In the early years of our relationship we did go away for a ‘romantic’ weekend, it proved to be a disaster, so has been my justification not to buy into Valentine’s Day since!! I must admit though I developed a new appreciation for the day when my uncle sent flowers to my grandmother, from whom he had been separated for the first 40 years of his life, to let her know how much he loved her. It was such a genuine display of love, albeit non romantic, that has stayed with me all these years. Inspired by that, Pa (my husband) has given a single rose to our daughter every year on Valentine’s Day and our small man has questioned why I don’t do the same for him - so I guess from now on I will be embracing some aspect of the occasion.”

The Power of a Flower

Billy Keane, Writer, Publican

“Men need guidance on how to look after women on days such as birthdays, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day, which is now upon us. I was chatting to man in the pub around this time last year and he was fighting with his partner over money or to be more specific the lack of it. He was tight and she was a spender. “Go on”, say I, “splash out and get her a nice bouquet of flowers for Valentine’s Day.” “How much would that cost”? He asked. “Just make her feel special.” Was my advice. I told him the story of the man I knew who stole flowers from a grave and was caught out when his wife found a note stuck in between the roses and tulips that read “To our beloved father. R.I.P.” We both agreed that was very bad form indeed. Time passed by and I asked the tight man how he got on at Valentine’s. “I got a bit scared of big money to be spent when I heard that word bouquet so I bought her a bunch instead. She gave out because she said I got them out of a bucket and they had an elastic band keeping them together. Keep your advice to yourself in future Billy.” I’m sure there’s a moral there somewhere and I will leave it to you to figure out what’s what.”

By Emily Keane

Flowers are a simple way of letting someone know, how much you care for them. Flowers are a major symbol of Valentine’s Day. We caught up with Ann Mc Auliffe of Flowers by Ann, to get her thoughts on Valentines. .

Would you say romance is in Kerry? Romance is blooming all over Kerry. It gets better each year. Most people engage with Valentines and most guys like to mark it with flowers.

Is this the busiest time of year for a florist? Yes, it’s the busiest time of year. January is a quiet month so February makes up for it and it’s the beginning of Spring.

Do you send bouquets internationally? We send flowers all over the world. A lot of people who have immigrated, send flowers to their families and loved ones. When you say it with flowers, say it with flowers by Ann.

What is the most popular flower arrangement for Valentine’s? Red roses for love are the most popular. We sell a few thousand roses each year along with mixed bouquets, flower arrangements, teddies, chocolates and balloons for your loved ones.

16

“I have to admit I am a bit of a romantic and luckily my husband, John, is also. We generally don’t get the opportunity to celebrate Valentine’s together as John is always working in Nicks and helping lots of loved up couples celebrate. However, without fail John will always surprise me in some way or another on Valentine’s. It’s one of the few times in the year that I will take time to handwrite a card and really look forward to receiving one. My Mum and Dad recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and they have always made each other a Valentine’s Card which I think is so cute. See you don’t have to spend a load of money to remind someone how much they mean to you.”

CONNECT KERRY February 2017

Do people buy flowers for their loved one’s graves? Yes they do.

Spring into the New Season! Winter is over! February is officially the first month of Spring so now is the time to embrace your new season style and wave goodbye to black and say hello to florals, hues and pastels. If you are like me, and love strong block colours, the good news is that vibrant reds, hot pinks and midnight blues - are also big news this Spring Summer. Kerry is home to many of Ireland’s top boutiques, retailers and designers - so whatever your budget, occasion, age or body shape - there is an outfit to make you both look and feel fabulous. So resist the temptation to shop on line, and keep it local. Most boutiques also offer a complimentary styling service, to assist you in making the right decision for your body shape, colouring, and event. Remember it is what underneath that counts . . . I recently had the opportunity to work with Irish owned shape-wear company, ATIR on the RTE Today Show. I can honestly say, this shape-wear really works. Available in sizes XS - XXL, ATIR

Kerry Expo 2017 The Kerry EXPO is set to host its 2nd annual event. This year organisers have pulled out all the stops and the Kerry EXPO has just launched its own website, www. kerryexpo.ie. With the launch of the dedicated website, businesses operating in Kerry region are invited to register their interest via the website to exhibit at the Kerry EXPO in the INEC, Killarney on April 9th. The event promises a full day of entertainment, including food tastings and sampling, all blended together with an extensive range of business, recruitment, educational and business support showcasing. Organisers have collaborated with the GAA in an effort to spread the word and embed the message into every club in Ireland and abroad. Diarmuid O’Sé Vice Chair of the Kerry County Board said “We were delighted to accept the invitation to join the industry group currently promoting the Kerry EXPO and we believe the collaboration between industry and GAA is certainly the way forward. If we are to keep our players in Kerry they will need to be employed and by coming together we can achieve so much more. We can encourage the brain drain back to Kerry grounds and to do this, the links between ourselves, jobs and education is an absolute necessity. This is a wonderful initiative and we will be actively encouraging everyone to come out and support it”. Schools and secondary schools will be asked to support Kerry Businesses by encouraging attendance to the EXPO, in an effort to instil in the younger generation, the benefits of living, working and studying in Kerry.

This year, nearly 20 of Kerry’s largest employers together with the GAA and Kerry District League, have come onboard to help support and promote the EXPO and they too will be exhibiting alongside the SME’s, high potential start-ups and entrepreneurs. These companies are eager to meet the Kerry community and aim to showcase the fact that they are at the cutting edge of the growth and sustainability of commercial Kerry. Equally they are happy to provide a sneak preview of their operations to EXPO visitors and fellow businesses. At the same time, these corporates and industries alike have embraced the chance to mix and mingle with SME’s and entrepreneurs within the county. Spokesperson for Enercon says, “It’s a great chance for us to meet family’s, students, fellow colleagues and job seekers. We are keen to support and exhibit alongside other Kerry businesses and entrepreneurs as they play a key role in the growth and prosperity of Kerry and overall in Ireland. We believe it’s a great achievement to bring businesses of all sizes across the whole county under one roof to celebrate Kerry in a fun and social setting. We look forward to showcasing ENERCON and meeting the greater community”. Jobs and recruitment will be at centre stage with a number of recruitment companies have already registering to exhibit. Organisers hope to list companies with job opportunities in an effort to assist those looking for a career change or new employment. Any company, sole trader or organisation seeking to fill job vacancies in the near future should contact the organisers at info@kerryexpo.ie. Everyone is welcome on April 9th.

KCFE –

So Much To Offer School Leavers And The Mature Student KCFE, under the auspices of Kerry ETB, is now home to a very large selection of Post Leaving Certificate courses tailored to meet the needs of both school leavers and those returning to education to upskill or retrain.

The college has recently updated their website with details of over 50 courses on offer at its campus in Clash, Tralee. The courses on offer at the college are validated on the National Framework of Qualifications. Upon course completion graduates can either enter directly into the workforce or choose to progress to higher education in Institutes of Technology or Universities. Qualifications are well respected by employers as they are designed in consultation with industry ensuring that graduates are ready to take up employment when completed. PLC courses give people the opportunity to gain a solid foundation in a subject area and the compulsory work experience allows them to see first-hand what is involved in their chosen career area. The nature of the courses are practical providing the skills set required by employers. The progression rate directly to the workforce is quite high particularly for mature students. The points gained from doing a PLC can also be used instead of their Leaving Cert score to gain access to third level programmes. Progression links from PLC courses to University courses and IT’s have grown considerably. Trinity College, UCC, UL, Mary Immaculate College of Education, IT Tralee etc are now all accepting QQI awards from KCFE allowing students a second chance at securing their dream course. The application system for next Septembers intake is now open online at www.kerryfe.ie and interviews for places will take place both in May and August.

An Open Day will be held in the college on Thursday 2nd March and everyone is welcome. The college also plans to have an information evening for parents of school leavers the previous evening at the college. Any further queries can be directed to the college office on 066 712 1741.

KCFE - Graduate Success Story Catriona O’Donnell is a graduate of KCFE and is now employed as a Clerical Officer at Kerry University Hospital. “I joined Kerry College of Further Education, Tralee as a mature student who had left a part time job to better myself. For me I had reached a stage in life where I needed a career change. The college in Tralee has so much to offer adults who make the decision to return to education to upskill. There is such a broad range of courses and until I actually started there I never realised how many adults do this every year. I was accepted onto the QQI Level 5 Office Administration Course at KCFE. It is a very practical course and really well structured. The course covers all aspects of what’s needed to work in a busy office environment and opens doors to a variety of employment. I found the lecturers very helpful throughout the year and I enjoyed the social aspect of going to college each day. I made a lot of new friends. The skills I gained from this course made me very employable. I secured work as a Clerical Officer at University Hospital Kerry. Here I am based in the Accident and Emergency Department which is very busy and requires me to be able to multitask. There is a lot of responsibility attached to this positon. The skills offered on the Office Administration course are very much in line with what employers need in the modern office. I felt well prepared for work after finishing the course. I would advise people who are thinking about going back to education after years of being out to just go for it. There will be so many others doing the same thing and you will enjoy it. Mature students will find a very supportive environment at KCFE which will enable them to succeed. I am happy to highly recommend the college and the course to anyone.”

Ciaran O Coileain is a KCFE Graduate of Level 5 Engineering Technology. He is now studying on the B Tech (Ed) in Engineering and Materials Technology, UL. “My year in Kerry College of Further Education made a positive and lasting impression on me. I had a good leaving cert which I had completed in a boarding school in Roscrea. However, I dropped out of my chosen third level course and found myself a little lost. I spent a while working in retail, became a sailing instructor and also worked as an SNA. It became obvious to me and those around me that I had what it took to make a good teacher and I set about making it a reality. I took up a place at KCFE on the QQI Level 5 Engineering course and used it as a method of getting back into education. I hadn’t done engineering or technical graphics for the leaving cert but I knew it was an area I had an aptitude in. If I wanted to secure a place in Engineering Teaching in University as a mature student I would have to be able to prove at an interview that I was able for it and so making a success of the PLC in the subject area would allow me to do just that. I enjoyed the classes and found teachers had a very practical approach to everything. During my year in KCFE I got involved in an indoor soccer team and a few competitions all of which added to the experience. I am grateful to the college for providing me with the opportunity to get myself back on track. As a result of doing the PLC I secured a place on the B Tech (Ed) in Engineering and Materials Technology at the University of Limerick. PLC opens doors for people. My time in KCFE was inspirational and as I go through my teacher training now I know the difference good teaching can have on an individual.

Beauty Corner Hi Everyone,

I hope you have all survived the excesses of the Christmas season and the long poor month of January! At last we can see the evenings start to stretch a little bit which can be very energizing and inspirational. Spring is classically a very busy wedding planning season as a lot of engagements happened over Christmas (how romantic!). When planning a wedding makeup look I always like to discuss in detail with the bride to be what her preferred style is. If not sure then a good idea is to start a scrapbook or a ‘Pinterest’ account collecting images of makeup and hair looks that you may like to try out. Your hairdresser and makeup artist will of course be only too happy to offer you a trial to see how you like these styles on yourself. The most important aspect of trials and planning is to find a look that you are totally happy and comfortable with for the wedding whether that is a natural look or a full on glamorous look that may not have been worn before. Its all part of the planning and a time to relish and enjoy! My favourite wedding makeup is a look that complements the natural beauty of the bride by choosing colours to enhance her natural eye colour. The general rule is that opposites attract. If the bride has blue eyes then a golden or coral tone looks really vibrant and brings out the blue of the eyes. If the bride has green eyes then a lilac or plum tone looks stunning and makes the green in the eyes stand out. No look is complete without Lancôme’s Hypnose Volume a Porter mascara. This mascara never clumps and has buildable coverage to suit all preferences. If going for a smoky or intense eye makeup look then a more subdued nude lip is best (in a colour complementing the eye makeup). Alternatively, keep eye makeup more low key and simple if you are feeling like wearing a vibrant colour on the lips. My absolute favourite nude lipstick is Lancôme L’absolu Rouge in shade #06. This creamy and nourishing texture is the most perfect neutral that will literally suit any skintone. Your makeup artist will be happy to discuss options with you and try out various looks. If you have any beauty related questions I am also happy to help. Happy Valentines day too : ) Until next month, Ciao,

Lorraine xx

Hi readers, “Isn’t there a grand stretch in the evening” now that’s a phrase we love to hear. February is the month we associate with love and romance, even for us single and looking for love women (a girl can dream). Spring is in the air and so are the lovely new colours. A little trick that used for the “in between season” is to brighten up the winter look with a Spring look accessory, like a pastel scarf, a summer colour brooch or a multi coloured bag. As I have said in a previous issue, the best place to work is retail for the changing of the seasons, all the stock that comes in is exciting and new and when I hear our customers say “wow Carmel the new stock is amazing”, makes me very happy indeed. February, of course, is also the month the wedding season starts properly, so if you have a wedding or special event on the horizon, call in with your outfit, and we will do our very best to take the stress out of getting you ready, we maybe even make shopping a fun and enjoyable experience. Now that would be something, wouldn’t it. Carmel xxx

When Coffee is more than Coffee..

Looking for that romantic break..

It rolls off the tongue every day.. ‘fancy a coffee..’ well if you like your coffee it’s time to pay a visit to The Bookshelf Coffee House. Recently opened by Mother and son duo Anne and Paul O Connell, it promises to give you the best in coffee and tasty dishes. We paid a visit recently to check it out and asked for a few trade secrets as to why the coffee tasted so damn good… they tell us. Their coffee roasters, The Barn, were recently awarded best Speciality Coffee Roasters in Europe. They buy their coffee direct from farms and only buy coffees of exceptionally high quality.

We all love to get away from the rush hour of life as we know it, and now that January is over and we are getting back to some sort of normality I took myself to the beautiful setting of the Sea Lodge Hotel in Waterville. Yes many may say Waterville is a one street town in corner of Kerry but a visit to the Sea Lodge will change this perception pretty quickly, welcomed to an extra-large foyer bright and full of comfy couches you could think you were in a 5 star hotel in one of the larger cities in Ireland, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, beds to die for and the view from our room was breath-taking, I could envisage myself sitting on the balcony with a nice pinot grigio looking out over Ballinskelligs bay in the sunshine later this year.

‘We pay a high premium for our coffee and therefore put a lot of time and training into serving it in a way that showcases the quality of the product’.

The bar is full of old world charm but still has the sharp chic look and what I liked in particular was the privacy of it all, when we arrived in the bar to have something to eat, a family gathering had just arrived to celebrate and occasion and I could see the dining area was reserved for them, not to be a party pooper but I did say to myself so much for a quiet dinner. Well I have to say I was pleasantly surprised when I saw they were whisked off nicely to the main area which was curtained to give them privacy to enjoy their meal and celebrations without onlookers listening to speeches, and also allowing those not attending enjoy their meal in their own company, top marks for this.

Not only that they also offer a number of gluten and dairy free options such as coconut milk porridge, served with fresh berries and nut butter. And the fact that they open at 7.30am weekdays there is no reason for going to work without a healthy breakfast.. The Brunch menu at the weekends is proving very popular and includes a number of sweet and savoury options such as pancakes with caramelised banana and raspberry coulis to Sautéed Mushrooms drizzled in Truffle oil and Parmesan. How else would you wish to spend a Saturday so when we were asked to come and try for ourselves it didn’t take much convincing.. I would highly recommend the Mushrooms.. and I think the younger member of the party was totally sold on the Pancakes. Sitting in the Bookshelf it’s got that feel good vibe so we were curious to find out where the idea came from so we convinced Paul to join us for a coffee and tell us.. Paul says ‘basically the idea behind the whole concept and style of the cafe is based on the fact that we wanted to create a cool funky space with a simple but different menu that would fit just as well in Dublin or London! We like to serve good coffee, good food and we like to do it all to some good music!’ It is worth a trip so put it in the diary…

Dinner was delicious and we couldn’t fault anything really, a few relaxing drinks in the bar after and what choice.. I was in heaven with the gin menu.. so much to choose from.. all in all I would have to say 10/10 for everything from start to finish. It’s a gem within our county and I am sure there are lots more so I am looking forward to checking out lots more and bringing you updates right here on ‘Connect Recommends’ in the meantime if you want to get away from it all call Sharon and her wonderful team at Sea Lodge who will spoil you, you will want to go back.

A healthier diet for 2017

We all know the benefits of a healthy diet. You will certainly feel better if you watch what you eat. It is so easy to open packet and jar of convenience foods, but they are often high in salt, sugar and additives. If you haven’t heard of any of the ingredients in them, leave them in the shop! Healthy food is so tasty and the goods news is it is usually very simple and quick to prepare.

Top tips for a healthier diet Tip 1

Tip 4

Tip 7

Use a good quality non stick pan, this way you need less oil when cooking. Once the oil is added to the pan don’t let it smoke as the oil becomes unhealthy when this happens.

Introduce seeds to your diet. Sesame seed – A wonderful antibacterial seed and high in Calcium, Flax seed – A seed abundant in Omega 3 and a wonderful cleaner for our digestive tract. Sunflower/pumpkin seeds – These seeds are packing a punch on the protein scale so another great addition to our daily diet. Dry fry the seeds in a dry frying pan and grind them in a mortar and pestle. This makes them easier to digest and releases the oils.

Avoid convenience foods as much as possible

Tip 2 Incorporate plenty of vegetables into your diet. The more colour on your plate the better.

Tip 3

Tip 5

Tip 6

To reduce salt in your diet use spices, garlic. lemon juice, black pepper or ginger to add flavour to your food.

Snack on nuts, vegetable sticks or fruit.

Happy healthy snacking!

Instead of using processed meats for sandwiches, steam your own chicken fillets and have them in the fridge.

DECISION MAKING Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate Carl Jung was one of the most important people in the founding and shaping of modern psychology. He worked extensively with the concept of the unconscious self and its power in our lives. Many of the habits that we form, good or bad, are rooted in the unconscious and often we are not even aware of why we do things that may be destructive for us. Jung recommended that we get to know and understand ourselves better in order to better regulate our lives and give ourselves control over our actions and responses. At this time of year, many people make new year’s resolutions, vowing to break bad habits and form good ones, often relying on will-power to stop themselves from reverting to unwanted behaviour. If you are doing this, and finding it hard to summon the will-power you need, perhaps you could consider instead looking at WHY you overeat, smoke, drink, don’t exercise etc., or why you put up with situations that are not good for you. What are the unconscious forces that prompt you to behave in ways that are against your self-interest. The answer may surprise you!

Placenta Encapsulation Comes To Kerry Last March, Kenmare-based homeopath, Sinead Hurley, became the first person in Kerry to offer new mothers the option of placenta encapsulation. Close to one year later she chats to Marisa Reidy about what is fast becoming a hugely popular option for women.

For anyone considering placenta encapsulation, when does the process start? Typically when an expectant mother is in her second trimester, she gets in touch with me and we begin preparing. I take her through the entire process, explaining what it’s all about and how it will work on the day she has her baby. As soon as she goes into labour I am contacted by her birthing partner, who will have saved the placenta as directed and will keep it cool until I arrive and take it away. If she is a private patient she needs to tell her consultant, and thankfully the midwives here are very much on board with the process, which is great. What does the process involve, from your point of view? I take the placenta away and dehydrate it for 14-16 hours before it is powdered and put into capsules. The placenta typically provides anywhere from 150-300 capsules, with mothers taking up to six per day for the first five to seven days. The entire process from when I receive the placenta to when the capsules are delivered takes about three days. What are the benefits of taking placenta capsules? Well there are so many benefits, but the main one is an increase in energy levels. Women feel so much more energetic and really feel good, which helps reduce the risk of post natal depression. Studies have proven that the symptoms of post-natal depression are linked with the severe lack of essential nutrients such as vitamin B6 and hormone CRH (our stress reducer hormone), both which are in high supply in the placenta. What got you interested in placenta encapsulation? Well I’m a homeopath first and foremost, but I had heard about this area and wanted to add something to the business that could help women at what is a hugely tiring and stressful time. I’m now a Placenta Remedies Network (PRN) certified placenta specialist. Do you provide any other such services to new moms? Yes, I also make a homeopathic remedy out of the placenta – one for the baby and one for the mother – and the benefits are lifelong. In my experience and research the placenta remedy may help improve symptoms of emotional stress, depression, anxiety, sorrow and hormone imbalance. For the baby, the placenta remedy may help with colic, crying fits, teething, separation anxiety (usually around 7 - 10 months) and babies struggling with breastfeeding. How much does the process cost? There are two main processes – steamed or dried raw encapsulation – both of which cost €180. This includes collection at the hospital or at home if it’s a home birth, encapsulation and delivery by An Post, next day delivery.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE The recommended age for a child’s first dental visit is age one or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. A pleasant start in Dentistry can positively shape your child`s future dental experience. Tooth decay is the most common chronic disease affecting young children. Tooth decay is caused by sugars that we eat mixing with bacteria in plaque and creating acid thus breaking down the enamel in the teeth. If children experience tooth decay in primary (baby teeth) they will almost certainly develop decay in the permanent dentition. Not all children with tooth decay will experience symptoms and may not show obvious signs of cavities. Untreated tooth decay can spread from one tooth to the next due to the spread of bacteria in saliva. The earlier the tooth is treated the better. Tooth decay in children can lead to loss of appetite, leading to stunted growth, weight loss and poor concentration in school. Tooth decay can be prevented by regular cleaning at least twice daily and after meals. Reduced consumption and frequency of consumption of dietary sugars and regular dental appointments. One of the most common ways a child`s teeth are damaged is through nursing bottle decay i.e. giving a child a bottle at night with sweetened liquids such as orange juice or milk. The sweetened juice pools around the teeth over a long period and produces acid which dissolves the enamel in the teeth and eventually decays the entire tooth. Babies can be weaned off the bottle at 12 months. Primary teeth(baby) are important to maintain despite common misconceptions. The baby teeth act as guidance for the permanent successors indicating where the permanent tooth should erupt. Early loss of primary teeth can result in severe crowding of the permanent dentition due to space loss. Finally, children’s teeth should be cleaned as soon as the first tooth erupts. Initially, this can be done with a piece of gauze Children under the age of two should not use toothpaste due to the risk of ingestion. Children up to age seven will require assistance with brushing. All children are offered a free Dental examination at Mac Domhnaill Dental with every adult examination on Saturdays.Dr Susan Crean has a particular interest in Paedriatic Dentistry and has vast experience in treating children.

HEALTHCARE MATTERS

Dry Skin

with Brian Kearney Hi everyone, As the weather gets colder one of the most common queries we receive in the pharmacy is how best to deal with dry skin conditions. Of course dry skin is something which can occur all year round but it can affect us more in bouts of chillier weather due to a lack of humidity and harsh winds. Our skin is the largest organ in our body. Dry skin is a very common condition which results in flaking of skin or patches of dryness. This can range from a very mild and short-lived complaint to a long term, more severe condition. In more severe cases the intervention of prescription creams/lotions may be necessary, however there are over the counter treatments which prove extremely effective in the management and prevention of dry skin. One of the most commonly recommended dermatological skincare brands in Sam McCauley Chemists is La Roche Posay. This is a French skincare brand dedicated to the treatment of all skin types but in particular that of sensitive skin. It is recommended by over 25,000 dermatologists worldwide. At the core of the brand is its unique thermal spa water which due to its composition of minerals has intense healing properties. Dry skin conditions are varied and can be extremely frustrating, especially when they occur in children. However, from experience we have found that with the proper skincare advice and routine, many of the conditions are extremely manageable if not reversible. • Adopting a skincare routine and remaining consistent is extremely important. • Cleansing the skin with a suitable product and moisturising with an appropriate cream can really make huge improvements in a short period of time. We deal with many patients who are surprised to learn that the skincare products they are using are not effective in treating their conditions and often times can exacerbate the problem. • Always choose non irritating clothes and washing detergents. • Add moisture to the air by using a humidifier. This is important in winter months when we turn up the heating which can really dry out the skin. • Use warm rather than hot water. • Keep hydrated. It is vital that you receive the correct advice and our highly trained staff are always on hand in Sam McCauley Chemists to guide you to the best treatment for your skin type. Please feel free to call in for a free La Roche Posay skincare consultation with one of our dermacare advisors. Until next time,

FRESH START, FRESH EYES Working in your business can give you a blinkered view, with a New Year comes the opportunity to get a fresh perspective on your business. Don’t rush head first into planning your marketing calender, if all you’re going to do is repeat what you’ve always done.

Avoid the ‘We’ve Always Done it That Way’ approach! Find someone with no emotional connection to your business, ideally someone who will be honest with you and won’t sugar-coat their opinions. Input from an outsider with different experiences can provide fresh new ideas to open up new revenue streams for your business. From a Social Media and Marketing perspective, it’s crucial to get a marketing audit, looking at your historical sales and marketing efforts and allow another set of eyes examine your brand and business identity. Paternity Leave The Paternity Leave and Benefit Act 2016 allows parents to take paternity leave from employment in respect of a child. Only one person who is a relevant parent in relation to a child will be entitled to paternity leave in respect of that child. This Act which became effective on 1st September 2016 created an entitlement of 2 weeks’ paternity leave to be taken as one continuous period of two weeks. Paternity leave can be taken at any time commencing on the date of the birth (or placement in the case of an adoption) and ending not later than 26 weeks thereafter. This means that a couple can chose to avail of the leave at the time of the birth, or at the end of the period of paid maternity leave (thus if they chose, they can have 28 weeks continual paid maternity/paternity leave) or any time in between. The period of paternity leave will commence on the date the relevant parent selects in his/ her notification but it cannot commence earlier than the date of confinement or the day of placement and cannot be later than 26 weeks after that date. As there is increased focus on health in the New Year, it is important for businesses to encourage and promote healthy lifestyles for their teams in the workplace. Promoting Healthy Food

This is obviously easier to implement in staff canteens, where menus can be influenced, however, it is not limited to larger businesses. When I worked at Ernst & Young, they provided 02/06/2016 2 complementary healthy food options at various locations in-office. I was amazed at the positive impact this had and fruit was always snapped up. A competition for who has the heathiest diet at work over the course of a week, might encourage positive competition.

Exercise

Although Yoga at the office is probably impractical, getting staff discounts and/or subsidising gym membership, Pilates classes, Zumba or similar should be considered. This could encourage positive interaction between employees in a non-work environment without work pressures.

Positivity

As technology is ever present, there is a trend to email a colleague in place of a conversation in the modern workplace. It’s a great time for team building, but try something different such as half hour staff coffee, think-tank session once a month.

Productively & Profit

It is a proven fact that happy employees are more productive and take less leave of absence due to ill health. The focus needs to be on creating a positive work environment for all, which ultimately increases productivity and profits.
