The first thing to check is whether any hair products are irritating your scalp. Most of these will contain alcohol and harsh chemicals which can dry out your scalp, making it itchy and flaky, so consider using a chemical free shampoo and conditioner, or natural hair colours such as Natratint or Tints of Nature, which are all available in your nearest Horan’s healthstore. Some people find that rubbing pure aloe vera gel or organic coconut oil into the scalp while hair is still wet after shampooing helps. Otherwise there is the inside out approach… Omega fish oils are key when it comes to skin as they keep the skin from drying out and flaking. Flax oil or Udo’s oil are also an option if you are not keen on taking a fish oil. You may also be low in Vitamin A which is important for skin health. Many people find MSM (a type of sulphur in capsule or powder form) helps all sorts of skin problems. It is also important to remember that a healthy gut and digestive system plays a very important role in our skin health (this includes your scalp!) so a probiotic and a good quality Vitamin B Complex such as Macanta or Terra Nova should be considered. As always we are happy to discuss these products with you, just call in to your local Horan’s Healthstore for more help and advice. Until next time, stay healthy, Deirdre 3

Kerry International Film Festival Reveal New Gold Sponsor Partnership with Kerry Airport Connect Kerry are delighted to announce the exciting new sponsor partnership between The Kerry International Film Festival and Kerry Airport. Running for the 22nd year, the festival will take place on October 14th-17th 2021. The acquisition of such a prestigious sponsor has provided a huge boost for the film festival. As both KIFF and Kerry Airport consciously work to promote Co. Kerry, there is a natural synergy with this new partnership. Kerry Airport has played an important role by linking the Southwest of Ireland internationally in recent years, allowing quick and convenient connections between Kerry and Dublin, Frankfurt and London. This has made international business more accessible than ever before for the people of Kerry. A common goal of both Kerry Airport and KIFF is the promotion of Kerry on a global scale which makes this new partnership a perfect match. Speaking to KIFF Board Chairperson, Grace O’ Donnell said “The team at KIFF are very excited about the collaboration with Kerry County Airport. We see this as a natural progressive partnership. For most of our visitors to the festival, stepping off the plane at Kerry Airport is their first taste of Kerry. Kerry Airport is the gateway to Kerry and we feel KIFF is the gateway to film in the County. We look forward to working with CEO of Kerry Airport John Mulhern along with his team at the airport to make KIFF one of the most important film festivals in the World and to continuously support Kerry as a destination."

Echoing the sentiments of Grace O’ Donnell was CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern. Speaking to Connect earlier this week he said “The Kerry International Film Festival is a highlight of any calendar. The benevolent and lasting relationship between the arts and County Kerry is one which is acclaimed all over the globe. In particular, the film industry. Remember when Jimmy Stewarts’ Charles Lindbergh finally spots land, Skellig Michael and the Iveragh Peninsula, a historic event in aviation and experienced by us all through the wonders of Film. Thus, how could Kerry Airport resist the opportunity to partner with KIFF and with them celebrate both renowned and emerging talent in their craft. We look forward to October with much anticipation”. The festival has a great team behind it with high profile and influencial Board members to help put the spotlight on Kerry over the coming years and encourage filmmakers to come to Kerry. Áine Moriarty, who is a Kerry native, is the CEO of the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) and is a proactive KIFF Board member. Speaking about the partnership she said “We have a wealth of creative talent here in Kerry and we want to ensure that they have every opportunity to grow and succeed internationally. The filmmaking industry in Ireland has become an important business for the Irish economy, KIFF and Kerry Airport can together showcase the filmmaking talent and stunning scenery our wonderful country has to offer. An advocate of bringing film making to Ireland is renowned script writer and Kerry native, Ailbhe Keogan. Ailbhe's latest script Joyride was filmed in Kerry this summer and features Oscar winning actress Olivia Coleman. Ailbhe was instrumental in bringing the filming Joyride to Co. Kerry. This brought significant media attention and provided a welcome boost to the local economy. Ailbhe is also a KIFF board member, speaking about the partnership she said “Personally, as a film-maker, I've been grateful to Kerry Airport for many years now. I've travelled abroad to make important connections and brought these collaborators home to Kerry. Partnering with Kerry Airport enables KIFF to do likewise; to make meaningful connections with an international film community so that we can offer the richest festival we can”.

it with us, especially after such a difficult time for the arts both nationally and internationally. I think after such a successful online festival last year; filmmakers trust us with their work even during these rocky times. This is a real honour and testament to quality festival and loyalty of our audience. This year will see further change as KIFF aims to provide both an online and a physical event to the festival, government permitting.’

To celebrate this new collaboration, KIFF have introduced The Kerry Airport Take Flight Award. One of the most important driving forces behind KIFF is supporting emerging talent and the Kerry Airport Take Flight Award will play a vital role in helping the Festival to deliver on this front. This award will recognise up and coming new talent in the film industry, something that is sure to compliment the already widely established Maureen O’ Hara award. The Maureen O’Hara award is exclusively awarded to women who have excelled in the film industry, with recipients such as Juliette Binoche, Saoirse Ronan and Jessie Buckley. Launching the careers of people such as Vincent Lambe and Jim Cummings, KIFF has received international critical acclaim for its world exclusive previews, including 2010 Oscar® short-listed Granny O’ Grimm and The Door, 2012 Oscar® shortlisted Head Over Heels, 2014 Oscar® winner Mr. Hublot, 2016 Oscar® winner Stutterer and 2019 Oscar® nominees Mother and Detainment. One of the most anticipated moments of the festival is its unique offering of live score screenings. Set in stunning surroundings it gives the audience an unrivalled experience, something of which KIFF has become well known for. Encouraging involvement in the festival from all members of the community, school children have been invited along in previous years to a mid-morning screening, an act sure to encourage the love of film from an early age. Head of Programming for KIFF, Eibh Collins said ‘This year we have seen an unprecedented number of films entered, the highest in the festivals history, and we are still accepting feature length submissions for another two weeks! It is fantastic to see that filmmakers are still creating work and are excited to share 6

Kerry International Film Festival was established in 2000 to wide praise however, in 2007, the festival became the fastest growing festival in all of Ireland, with audiences increasing by nearly 600% from 2006 to 2011 when its audience topped 10,000 for the first time. With locations such as St Mary’s Church of the Sloes and Killarney house in the stunningly picturesque town of Killarney, KIFF is a film festival like no other. In fact, it is currently included in the top 100 film festivals in the world where it has gained a 5-star rating. Working hard alongside Cinema Killarney and local business is a testament to the festivals ground level of support and goodwill. The KIFF Board are hugely grateful to all its sponsors, both locally and nationally, and the support they receive is invaluable. They are excited to be working alongside all of its supporters in 2021.

With the last 18 months being tremendously challenging to everyone, each sector has taken a hit in many different ways leaving question marks around sustainability and viability of every industry. The festival Board met the challenge head on with determination. Undeterred by the challenges facing them they adapted to the global climate and launched a virtual Film Festival online in 2020 for the first time ever. They reached an exceptional number of 17,000 live streams, showing exactly why they are Ireland’s 4th biggest film festival, persevering and succeeding in the most challenging of times. Tickets to the festival screenings and events go on sale soon. Further information can be found on www.kerryfilmfestival.com or email info@kerryfilmfestival.com

I have always loved fashion. My grandmother was a master dressmaker and my mother and older sister have always had a love of fashion so it was instilled in me from a young age and has always been a big part of my life. I love dressmaking myself and went on to study fashion design”. “I launched the first, a basic version of style search in February 2020, just as the lockdown started so like all businesses we had to quickly adapt and ensure we were offering exactly what our customers needed at that time. I’m so grateful for the support we received and it was a great reassurance to be able to survive such a difficult time as you feel if we can survive that, we can survive anything. After such a trying year for all businesses, it was an honour to be awarded Best fashion styling consultancy 2021 in the Irish Enterprise Awards”. “Our mission is to make shopping easy and to help all women look good and feel great so we have services that cater to every single budget. the best fashion available online across a whole range of brands and put them all in one place. We do the work for you. Making shopping easy. Saving you valuable time and effort. Other services we offer range from a free body shape calculator, an eBook on how to shop for your body shape, a monthly subscription service, personal styling sessions where I style you in full outfits specifically for your style, shape, occasion and budget. So, there really is something for everyone on StyleSearch.ie”. StyleSearch has had an incredible online traffic of over 100,000 visits in just 6 months with a return rate of 10% as opposed to brand sites figures of 30-40%. The Importance of sleep A Good sleep is hugely beneficial to your fat loss success. Here are some of the reasons why and some tips for a better sleep Zzzzz

#Poor Sleep Can Increase Your Appetite This is likely caused by the impact of sleep on two important hunger hormones, ghrelin and leptin.

SOME TIPS THAT MAY HELP WITH SLEEP QUALITY

• Increase bright light exposure during the day especially natural sunlight • Reduce blue light exposure in the evening - turn off the phone/ computer at least 1 hour before bed. Read a book or listen to relaxing music

Ghrelin is a hormone released in the stomach that signals hunger in the brain. Levels are high before you eat, which is when the stomach is empty, and low after you eat.

• Don't consume caffeine late in the day - I avoid tea or coffee after 5 pm

Leptin is a hormone released from fat cells. It supresses hunger and signals fullness in the brain.

• Try to sleep and wake up consistent times - even at the weekend

When you do not get adequate sleep, the body makes more ghrelin and less leptin, leaving you hungry and increasing your appetite.

• Take a melatonin supplement or indeed try ONE of these - change it up every month or two

#Sleep Helps You Fight Cravings and Makes Healthy Choices

• Exercise regularly - some form ever day but not before bed

Lack of sleep actually alters the way your brain works. This may make it harder to make healthy choices and resist tempting foods.

#Poor Sleep May Decrease Your Resting Metabolism

Your resting metabolic rate (RMR) is the number of calories your body burns when you're completely at rest. It's affected by age, weight, height, sex and muscle mass. Research indicates that sleep deprivation may lower your RMR

#Sleep Can Enhance Physical Activity

A lack of sleep can cause daytime fatigue, making you less likely and less motivated to exercise. In addition, you're more likely to get tired earlier during physical activity.

#It Helps Prevent Insulin Resistance

Poor sleep can cause cells to become insulin resistant. Insulin is a hormone that moves sugar from the bloodstream into your body's cells to be used as energy. When cells become insulin resistant, more sugar remains in the bloodstream and the body produces more insulin to compensate.

• Reduce irregular or long daytime naps - (I wish)

• Don't drink any liquids before bed - avoid those trips to the bathroom (with eyes shut) • Invest in a comfortable bed, mattress and pillow - we do usually spend 1/3 of our day in bed.

Suggested Supplements • Ginkgo biloba: A Natural herb with many benefits, it may aid sleep, relaxation, and stress reduction, also helps with cognitive function. • Valerian Root: Several studies suggest that valerian can help you fall asleep and improve sleep quality. • Magnesium: Responsible for over 600 reactions within your body, magnesium can improve relaxation and enhance sleep. Also helps with muscle repair. • L-theanine: An amino acid, L-theanine can improve relaxation and sleep. • Lavender: A powerful herb with many health benefits, lavender can induce a calming and sedentary effect to improve sleep. • CBD oil: Improves sleep and joint health.

We offer affordable options for all your fitness needs. Services - Building Strength - Losing weight - Personal Training - Fitness Classes 10

A " lways ready to give customers a warm welcome and a dining experience they will not forget."

No trip to Killarney is complete without a visit to the well-established Kitty O’ Se’s Seafood and Grill. Opening its doors for the first time in Killarney in August 2019 on College street after establishing a successful brand in Kinsale, County Cork, it has become a favourite amongst locals and visitors. From the moment you enter you are greeted with the warmth of welcoming hospitality, the type of ‘Cead Mile Failte’ that endears the Irish in the hearts of visitors. It is clear to see just why Kitty O’ Se’s was the winner of Best Newcomer in the Hospitality Awards 2019. The biggest problem you will face is trying to decide what to order with the delicious options on offer. A personal favourite for starters is the Mussels Mariniere in a white wine, garlic and cream sauce with shallots. Bursting with flavour from the first bite, the rich creamy sauce marries so well with the mussels.

If mussels aren’t for you then I can recommend the Tempura Prawns, cooked in Kitty’s beer tempura batter served on a bed of mixed leaves with sweet chilli mayonnaise. The batter is divinely melt in the mouth, accompanied by the kick of the sweet chilli mayonnaise, it is a starter that will be hard to beat.

For the mains you will have to try Kitty’s famous fish and chips at least once in your life! Coated in Kitty’s top secret recipe light beer batter you can choose between Haddock, Cod or Hake to have with the fresh home cut chips, mushy pea’s and Kitty’s very own tartare sauce. The batter on the fish in itself is something to be experienced, full of flavour and melting on the tongue, it evokes memories of holidays by the sea. For the pasta lovers amongst us, the Seafood Tagliatelle is something I have never tasted as good elsewhere. With beautiful fresh tagliatelle, it is cooked with smoked haddock, salmon, prawns and cod in a rich cream sauce. This is a dish not to be shared because you will want every last bite for yourself! Speaking of sharing, Kitty’s famous Seafood Tower is made to be share with both hot and cold options it offers and array of seafood delights including freshly opened oysters served with potatoes or home cut chips. For those not so fond of seafood, Kitty’s offers beautiful locally sourced meat such as prime 10oz sirloin steak or Kitty’s own chicken curry.

If you have room for dessert, because let’s face it there is always room, thenKitty’s rhubarb crumble with custard is the perfect option. Bringing back memories of home baking and comfort food at its best, it is a winner for sure. For those with a more savoury palette the cheeseboard option is definitely for you. With a beautiful selection of cheese, fruit/nut crackers along with a shot of house port or prosecco. Open 7 days a week from 12 noon for coffee, lunch and light snacks and Dinner from 5pm. Ask the Pharmacist

In the latest edition of our multi-award winning Ask The Pharmacist feature, Mounthawk Allcare Pharmacy’s Pat Harmon and Maria O Meara discuss all things skin related. “Here in Mounthawk Pharmacy, there are only three causes that we feel passionately about. Number one is the need for harsher punishment for parole violators. Number two is the DIRE need for more pancake outlets in Tralee and Kerry in general. Number three is the importance of good skincare. In last months issue, we discussed the importance of skin protection when outside in the sun. In this article we are going to discuss some common skin conditions and the tried and tested products that we use ourselves to manage these ailments. In our humble little pharmacy on the outskirts of Tralee, many people will not realise that our staff of seven have a combined age of 654. You would not believe the amount of people who mistake us for people in their twenties and thirties. There are two reasons for this. Number one is the fact that each and every one of us has had more cosmetic procedures than Kerry have All Irelands. Number two (and most important) is that we know the importance of taking care of our skin. Read on for how we do this. Acne is a common skin condition that mainly affects adolescents and young adults but it can strike at any time of life. Certain conditions can predispose you to it (eg PCOS) as well as it being a side effect of certain medications. These days it is increasing common to experience break outs with the wearing of masks (maskne). It generally occurs on the face and neck but can also appear on the upper torso and can cause great distress in extreme cases. Here in store, we highly recommend the Effaclar product range from La Roche Posay for treating acne-prone skin. There are a range of products in this range from purifying foaming gel to micellar water to moisturising cream. When used regularly, this product range helps to control excess sebum and gently cleanse and remove impurities. It contains a unique blend of ingredients with antibacterial properties and helps to unblock pores. Another product that we love for its convenience is the Serozinc mist spray. This can be sprayed directly on the face but also on the back and is a miracle worker for clearing bad breakouts. Over the counter, there is a topical cream that contains benzoyl peroxide (Acnecide) and this is effective in mild to moderate cases. Some cases will require a trip to your GP however and luckily there is a huge range of medication, both oral and topical, available on prescription for use in these cases. 20

Skin dryness is a common side effect of acne treatments and we recommend the Hydraphase Intense range from La Roche Posay to help alleviate this. If skin irritation occurs, Cicaplast cream is a miracle worker for nearly any skin condition you can imagine (nappy rash, minor cuts and abrasions, eczema) and Toleriane cream is wonderful for reactive skin and is particularly suitable for irritated skin around the eyes. Here in Mounthawk Allcare Pharmacy, we are proud to stock the full range of La Roche Posay products and there are many more products available in addition to the above mentioned. Pop into store to browse the range and we also have loads of samples if you would like to take some home and try a product out before purchase. We are truly passionate about looking after people’s skin. Rosacea is skin condition on the face that resembles adult acne and typically presents on the cheeks and bridge of the nose. The Rosaliac range from La Roche Posay is specifically formulated to manage this condition. It comes in a range of serum, cream and make up remover. A particularly excellent product in this range that we use ourselves is the Rosaliac CC Crème which has inbuilt cover providing an even tone and corrects colour flaws. It also contains SPF as am added bonus. Eczema and psoriasis are increasingly common conditions and there are a huge range of products available to help manage these conditions. This requires an article all of itself so we will cover these in a later issue so stay tuned for that. One thing we would like to stress is that when it comes to skin what works for one person may not always work for another. But with so many products available to choose from we are confident that we will be able to help you find the right product for your skin. So call into store to us today to view our extensive range of skincare options. In addition to La Roche Posay, we also stock CeraVe, Aveeno, Nuxe, E45, Elave, Trilogy, Green Angel, The Inkey List, Loreal, Garnier…. the list goes on! As always, we are happy to help with any issues our customers may have. Remember also to follow us on Facebook and Instagram to see our latest offers. We love a good promotion. Finally don’t forget to pick up our Loyalty card which gives you points on all purchases that you can redeem in store and also access to exclusive discounts. All the cool kids have one.

Pearly Whites by Dr. Róisín Boyle Toothbrushing alone only reaches 60% of tooth surfaces. The main aim of brushing our teeth twice daily is to remove the plaque and to deliver fluoride to the teeth. This helps to reduce tooth decay and inflammation in the gums, which can lead to gum disease and bad breath. By using interdental brushes, such as Tepe brushes, you can reach the areas in between your teeth where the toothbrush will miss. We recommend cleaning between your teeth every day and these interdental brushes are the most effective way to do so. Initially, you might find that there is some bleeding when you use the brushes, but with daily use this bleeding should stop. If you do not notice any improvement, contact your dentist. The interdental brushes come in a variety of sizes. The brush should fit snugly between the teeth, the bristles should touch the tooth surface and gum tissue. The wire should not touch the sides of the teeth or gums. Don’t force the brush between the teeth. Move the full length of the brush back and forth between the teeth 2-3 times. You will likely require 2-3 different sizes for different areas and floss in some places. By working interdental cleaning into your daily routine, you will improve your oral health and maintain a clean and healthy mouth. 49, Sráid na Carraige Uachtarach, Trá Lí, Co. 2. Toning

I love a toning spray. I find a lot of toners can be very harsh and stripping on the skin. The awardwinning Trilogy Hydrating Mist Toner is always on me, one in the bathroom and one in my handbag! It is a revitalising allin-one toner and floral moisture mist that instantly delivers moisture to skin, leaving it lovely and dewy. It’s also a great setting spray for make-up and perfect for sensitive skin. Available in local pharmacies and Horan’s Health Shops.

3. Moisturiser

Hi everyone, my name is Laura Holly and I started my blog, ‘Laura Holly Beauty and Fashion’ a few years ago as a hobby. I want my blog to be a place where ladies can take a few minutes to enjoy fashion, everyday outfits, beauty and interiors. There is a mixture of high street, local boutiques and the odd designer piece here and there. When Connect Kerry asked me to do a monthly column I jumped at the chance! This month I am going to focus on my top 10 Beauty Must Haves!

1. Cleansing

I love an oil cleanser and the Caudalie Vino Clean MakeUp Removing Cleansing Oil is absolutely beautiful. Taking off my make-up and jewellery when I come home, is my favourite part of the day! And this little gem, makes your skin squeaky clean. It is a mix of 100% natural origin plant oils. It nourishes, cleanses and removes the skin’s impurities, all while enhancing the eyelashes thanks to the castor oil. A little tip is to ALWAYS double cleanse - you’d be surprised what comes off on the second cleanse! Available at McAuley’s Pharmacy Tralee or Lynch’s Pharmacy Castleisland

24

Number three has to be a good moisturiser. A new discovery of mine earlier this year, was the La Roche Posay Hylau B5 Aquagel SPF30 moisturiser. I have such sensitive skin and have to be so careful about what I use on my face. I actually love the whole La Roche Posay range. This moisturiser is so intensely hydrating and gives a fab glow to the skin. Especially on those no-make up days. Add a bit of concealer, bronzer, do your brows and you’re good to go! I also love that it has SPF in it. Most SPF moisturisers aren’t great to put under foundation, as they leave a residue. This however, is a lovely base for your make up. Available at All Care Pharmacy, Mounthawk, Tralee.

4.Foundation Next up is the all-important foundation! The IT Cosmetic’s Illuminating CC Cream is unbelievable! It feels nourishing on the skin, whilst giving amazing coverage. I suffer from eczema on my neck and eyes from time to time and this CC cream completely hides it without getting crusty. Its available at CH Tralee or online. Another lovely foundation and more purse friendly is the L’Oreal True Match Foundation, light but buildable and available in tons of shades!

5. Eyebrows

Up next, the ‘New CID Cosmetics I - Groom Neutral Eyebrow Pencil’. I get this from the Eyebrow Queen herself, Joanne at Plush Brow Skin Beauty, Maine Street, Tralee. If you haven’t had a Brow Define done by Joanne yet, I cannot recommend her more! This is an award-winning eye brow pencil and brush. It’s a waxy pencil that can be used on all shades of eyebrows, making it so easy to use. Apply lighter or heavier pressure to the brow, depending on your colour preference.

6. Eyeliner This Cult favourite has been in my make up case for over a decade - the Charlotte Tilbury Rock ‘n’ Kohl eyeliner in Eye Cheat. It is the universal nude tone and creates the optical illusion of wider, fuller and more awake eyes. Line around your waterline to make your eyes appear bigger & brighter! Available from Brown Thomas and online.

7. Mascara I’m all about the eyes! And let’s face it, these days no one sees the rest of our faces, since most of us spend half the day wearing a mask! I love the Maybelline New York Falsies Lash Lift Mascara. Dubbed Best Lengthening Mascara of 2020 in the Allure Best of Beauty Awards. It just shows, you don’t have to spend a fortune for a good mascara. This mascara rivals all of the designer brands. I love the chunky brush and it delivers dramatic length and volume. As the name suggests - a lash lift look in a tube! Available in local pharmacies.

8. Hair

For all my curly haired girls, the Umberto Giannini Curl Whip Curl Activating Vegan Mousse is the one! It doesn’t make your hair sticky or crusty and really gives a lovely bounce to your curls - no frizz in sight! Available from Boots or online

9. Bronzer Next on my list is pricey, but so worth it! I’d say I get more than a year out of the Chanel Healthy Glowing Bronzing Cream. It comes in a massive jar and is so lightweight and easy-to-blend! For a natural sun-kissed glow, use a large brush and buff it all over your face. Or for a more sculpted look, smooth the bronzer where thesun would hit, such as across cheeks, nose, forehead, chin and don’t forget your neck and décolleté. No make-up lines allowed! Available at CH Tralee or online.

10. Sleeping Beauty Last but definitely not least, is a silk pillowcase and scrunchie! I have been sleeping on a silk pillowcase now for years and cannot recommend them enough. I buy most of mine from Lily Silk on Amazon. They are made from beautiful Mulberry silk and are so soft. These pillowcases help prevent sleep wrinkles, by allowing your skin to always stay hydrated. They prevent breakouts by keeping out harmful bacteria that usually build up on cotton pillowcases and clog your pores. Silk pillowcases are also great for your hair, as it allows your hair to retain moisture from products and natural oils and reduce friction that could cause tangles and breakage. So much so, I now only wear silk scrunchies! Again, no breakage and they also don’t leave a mark where your hair has been tied up. These are a little bit of an investment, but I have mine for years! Buy well and buy once!

In next month’s issue, it is going to be all about Autumn/Winter fashion! For any fashion or beauty queries, please email laurahollystylist1@gmail.com Laura x

le p eo P l ea R s g in d ed W l ea R e o J d n a m o T f o g in d The Wed Will You Marry Me?

A romantic proposal on the set of Neighbours in Melbourne, Australia in 2017 began Tom Ahern and Joe Burkett’s journey up the aisle when Tom got down on one knee and proposed to Joe. A gleeful Joe’s answer to ‘Will you marry me?’ was of course, ‘Yes’. The couple tied the knot on 1st August 2021 in the stunning Castlemartyr Resort, Co. Cork. Jackie Day, the couple’s wedding coordinator was an immense help and executed the day to perfection. Joe, director of the Joe Burkett Theatre Company and Performing Arts tutor for Inspired is the son of John and Teresa, Ballyheigue. Tom, a financial controller and son of Michael and Josephine, Glasheen.

best friend Karen Best walked up the aisle along with the page boys and flower girls Rhys Power, Finn Ahern, Freya Godley and Ellen O’Donovan to Canon in D. Tom choose Come What May while Joe opted for Love Thy Will Be Done. The groom’s mothers gave them away.

An Emotional Ceremony

An emotional spiritualist ceremony followed and was filled with beautiful moments including readings and music from the grooms’ sisters Mag Power, Avril Godley, and Sheila O’Donovan with the grooms, wedding party, and guests sobbing tears of joy throughout.

Salute the Suit

The couple met by chance at the Killarney Races, struck up a conversation and a spark were ignited. Aoife Hurley, the celebrant worked tirelessly with the groom’s to create a ceremony that was personal and true and before long the couple were suit shopping. And didn’t they look dapper?

Tom’s suit was hand-made in Turkey. Joe opted for a tailor-made suit from Savilles of Cork and turned to his good friend Carmel Russell of That’s Perfect to help him pick the perfect mask to compliment his suit. Joe enlisted the help of Stephanie Kerins to ensure his hair was looking the best for his wedding. Joe trusted Steph completely when working his hair towards the style he wanted. Yvonne from Chique made sure that Joe was glowing on his big day with the perfect tan to compliment his suit. Cathyanne Kelleher of Cathyanne Bridal Hair and Michelle Ryan, Makeup artist created a natural make-up look teamed with classy and subtle up-styles for the wedding party.

Music from the Heart

The couple exchanged their vows in an outdoor ceremony at the Castle mote. Joe’s close friend and musical director Claire Adams was accompanied by Orpheus Duo and together with the couple, Claire created the perfect playlist. Tom’s best man and brother Denis Ahern, his first lady Bridget Dunne and Joe’s best man Dave O Shea and his first lady and 26

A jigsaw ceremony was introduced by the couple who had a Love Heartshaped jigsaw made for the wedding. Pictures of the couple, their family, and friends were presented to the couple by their godchildren.

Danced down the Aisle

Higher and Higher sung by Joe’s best friend Karen Farrelly saw the couple dance down the aisle. Tara Aherne of Tara Aherne Photography and Eamon Dennehy of Aisling Productions captured the entire day. Professional and sincere, Tara and Eamon formed a bond with the boys that ensured the wedding day was a video and pictureperfect day. Rachel from Ina McCarthy for Flowers ensured the floral displays were perfect. Following a five-course meal in the banqueting hall of the Capel Suite, the couple cut their 3-tier cake made by Louise Byrne from The Little Love Knot Bakery.

Mr. and Mr.

Joe and Tom’s first dance was to Affirmation by Savage Garden followed by evening entertainment in the form of a specially made bingo game, a Mr and Mr Quiz, and Tayto sandwiches. The grooms agree that their wedding was the perfect day filled with love, laughter and tears of joy and are now looking forward to a lifetime of creating memories with their family and friends.

Dip in the Nip Kerry in aid of Recovery Haven Cancer Support House Cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry is thrilled to join forces with Fenit-based Wild Water Adventures to organise Kerry’s first ever, women’s-only charity Dip in the Nip this September! The exciting collaboration is the first of its kind in the Kingdom, where women of all ages are being invited to bare all and take to the water on September 18th 2021 to raise funds for the wellknown cancer support charity. Billed as a fun, exciting and empowering event for women right across the country, this fundraising event is open to all women – including those who have experienced cancer themselves, those who are supporting a friend or family member on their caner journey or those who want to remember and honour a loved one who they lost to the disease. The location of the event will be kept top secret until a few days the event, but organisers are promising a truly fun and exhilarating morning for all involved with music, refreshments and some great prizes up for grabs after the dip. “This is a completely new departure for us here at Recovery Haven Kerry, but we are really excited at the thought of all amazing women of Kerry and beyond coming together in such a novel way for charity,” said Recovery Haven Kerry manager, Siobhan MacSweeney. “We truly hope that women everywhere will embrace this fun, empowering and important event and make it a truly memorable one for everyone involved.”

The team at Wild Water Adventures are equally excited about the upcoming event. “We had the pleasure of running a Wild Swimming pilot project with five wonderful ladies from Recovery Haven last year and spent six Saturdays exploring, having wild swims, eating cake and laughing. To say it was the most personally rewarding work we have ever done is no small statement, as we have worked with many types of groups in many different outdoor settings for many years. We are hugely impressed with the work Recovery Haven does and are honoured to help in our own small way.” Registration, priced at €40 (plus booking fee), is now open through Eventbrite by searching ‘Dip in the Nip Kerry’ or on all Recovery Haven and Wild Water Adventures’ social media platforms. Everyone who signs up will receive a custom swimming cap, a medal to mark their participation and will be automatically entered into a draw for some great prizes. Pre-registration is vital, however, as entries cannot be processed on the morning of the event.

House or Home

Hello Connect Readers, this month Im thinking about making a house a home. So Many of us get bogged down with material things, things that we ‘need’, the majority of them being far from essential, yet we still convince ourselves that we need them. This too is true for our homes. I often meet people looking for the perfect house, or have just built or purchased their perfect house. So many of us will aspire to have what our neighbours have, or what society says we should have. This week I want us to try and understand, having a house is very different to having a Go BOLD be BRAVE home. In order to have a home, we need to look

at our own needs and wants rather than those of our neighbours. Just recently a good

make yourself smile when you walk in to the utility

Insta friend and fellow interior Designer had a tough battle with cancer and after a long hard road, she was given the choice to continue with a trial treatment or return home with palliative care. She chose to come home and passed peacefully a month later in her much loved home. In her last few years, she had put so much of her love and energy into making her house the perfect home. When I found out she had passed, my immediate reaction to myself was a bit angry with questions like ‘what was it all for’ all her hard work and achievements wasted, for nothing, however after the initial shock and slghtly negative thoughts, my opinion quickly shifted and I was reminded of the importance of making our homes our ‘happy place’ and if that means purchasing those non-essential items then so be it, our happiness whilst here, is worth it right ! In her last few days, she referenced many my favourite yellows quotes of encouragemen as well as listing thethings she was greatful for, with the first FARROW COLOURTREND LITTLE GREENE & BALL thing on her list being her beautiful home, ‘Sassy Yellow’ ‘Yellow Pink’ ‘Babouche she was so greatful she had created this No.223’ space for her to be able to come home to and as she said ‘good design can make people happy’ so with that in mind I want to look at some ways in which we can all achieve this.

‘Retrain Rejuvenate and Return to work’ by Cathriona Murphy

Within each and every one of us, we hold the potential to become the best versions of ourselves. However sometimes life takes us down roads that leave us feeling defeated, uninspired and full of self-doubt. This is something that Dee Keogh, development officer at NEWKD, noticed regularly amongst women whom she met through her support services. Recognising that in front of her stood women who fought battles no one knew about but persevered raising families, she knew something had to be done. She could look beneath the exterior and see the potential waiting to come through. The Women’s Returner group was developed by Dee and piloted with the delivery by Margaret Brick of Connect Kerry. A course specifically targeting women who have reached a cross road in life and feel like there is no way forward, each week out of the six is specifically designed to motivate, nurture and support. With the inclusion of guest speakers ranging from career advisors, motivational coaches it works to guide the women into a career direction and help them achieve it through work experience, education and practical assistance.

"

Ann is a lady who recently participated, she has spent all of her life hairdressing and knew she needed a change. “Originally I was apprehensive about doing this course as I have been out of education for many years. Following a phone conversation with Dee I was convinced. From the first morning it was a pleasure and I found Margaret and the variety of guest speakers to be so encouraging and informative that I feel now I am ready to begin my new journey and embrace the next chapter of my life” Ann’s words echo the sentiments of Marion whom also completed the course. “I was so happy I went with it and really enjoyed it. Now I have an idea where I want to go in life and I finally feel motivated to do so”.

Human Potential, though not always apparent, is there waiting to be discovered and invited forth.

"

-William W Purkey.

Course facilitator Margaret Brick says ‘ it was a pleasure to work with these wonderful ladies over the duration of the course, arriving on zoom from totally different backgrounds each lady had one thing in common, finding a new path for themselves in the work force, retraining and redeveloping themselves to meet the changes in our world. It gave me great satisfaction to watch these ladies find a ‘new me’ and to nurture that new person unveil skills they didn’t know they had. Giving them the encouragement to take the step and try something new was wonderful, I wish them every success as they go forward and find new paths in life. The course is also particularly helpful for women who have enjoyed career success but with the current climate may have to adapt and are unsure where their place in the employment market lies. Sabina is one such lady, having enjoyed success in the tourism industry she found her working life suddenly full of uncertainty due to covid. “The course was fabulous. I learned so much about myself and what I do not want to do and what I have to stop doing. I am cutting things out and saying no to things that do not serve me. Mags put a great content together, all speakers were exceptional. I got a lot of information and have a plan now which is brilliant.” From the first session each woman started with nervous uncertainty. By the last day the enthusiasm and sense of excited anticipation of what was ahead for them shone through. By helping them uncover the self-confidence and self-belief they had but just needed to find, The Women’s Returners is here to change lives.

For more information on taking part in these courses contact Dee Keogh on 0876356353 Register with annkennelly@newkd.ie

Donal's early life, growing up on the paternal farm, was much influenced by horses, cows, dogs, foxes, rabbits, the sound of the corn crake at dusk, the soothing sound of flowing water and the shadows of the clouds creeping over the landscape. He sometimes says “you can't get much more rooted than that", referring, primarily, to the two ancestral farms! That's the backdrop and the soundtrack to his life of philosophising, contemplating, reflecting (soul searching) and wondering about life's purpose, meaning and possibilities.

About twenty years ago, a new, deep and insatiable interest in health got added on top of 'that base'. He feels that the 'whole sculpture' is a summary of his life

Fundraising Campaign for 4-year-old Kerry girl with rare genetic condition Huge thanks to everyone who has contributed and helped us to reach almost €80,000 of our target of €250,000. We are very appreciative of all the wonderful support we have received on our fundraising journey to date. The month of August saw several events held to support Rose. We had a great day at The Barracks Gym in Castleisland where Stephen Cahill and Niamh O’Grady (Owners) Lorna Mallon (Organiser) and Donnchadh Callaghan and their team raised almost €1400.00. The KVVCCC 11th Annual Ballymac Vintage Car and Honda 50 Run took place on August 8th. The event which was expertly organised by the club raised in excess of €6000.00 to support Rose. We are also very grateful to Mary O Donnell Beauty and Born to Run Tralee Marathon Club who are currently hosting events on behalf of Help Rose Bloom. Further updates on these events next month. Rose has continued with her weekly intensive physiotherapy sessions at Barefoot Physio and is exceeding expectations with her progress. She managed to stand upright and unaided for almost 20 seconds recently. This would have been unimaginable when she was initially diagnosed with SMA Type 1 over three years ago. Preparations for Rose's scoliosis operation continue however it is unlikely to happen now until October / November. Like lots of other children Rose will return to playschool this week and is excited to show her friends her new wheelchair. Finally we are thrilled to announce a very exciting fundraiser sponsored by Ian O'Sullivan of O'Sullivan Bathroom Renovations, Liber House, Monavalley who have donated an amazing Bathroom Makeover worth a staggering €6000.00.
