Hi everyone.

Its May, the evenings are getting longer, and the weather is not too bad to go with it, so all is good.

This month we look at exam time, changing my hat from editor to mum of an exam student, it’s a tough ole time for them, lots of study brings a lot of stress, but there are lots of other things to understand for them too, eating properly to have the body fuelled up, sleep and exercise are both important in their own right, as is time management, and most of all realising that these exams are not the entire world, there are so many options out there now I always say to my son, ‘there are lots of options for you’ so take the time out to listen to your teenagers and understand what and where they are going. We have some tips and advice here for everyone so have a read and best of luck to all in the final studies before it begins.

We also had a great chat with the leading roles of a new series starting on RTE on May 14th Charlene McKenna and Barry Ward star in Clean Sweep which I think will be a ‘worth watch’ so put it in the diary.

Tralee Food festival is happening this month and I am looking forward to sampling the delights available across the town over the two-day event.

Nominations are still open for the Connect Women in Business awards; we have some amazing ladies so far and looking forward to welcoming so many more.

We hope you enjoy reading this on your phone, laptop or iPad and we look forward to chatting to you again next month.

Until then

Take care of each other

Brain Health

As we age our brain starts to slow down and lose nerve cells, but there are a number of things we can do to keep sharp.

Looking after our brain as we age is as important as keeping our bones and heart healthy. Some foods can negatively affect brain cells while others can positively boost your grey matter. High consumption of added sugar, alcohol and processed foods can all have a negative impact on our brain health. There is a growing understanding of the link between diet and brain health.

Some foods which can have a positive effect on our brain health include:

AVOCADO, EGGS, BEETROOT, DARK CHOCOLATE, COCONUT, VITAMIN C, TURMERIC AND GREEN TEA. There are some excellent supplements available instore to help support your brain function, these include:

OMEGA 3S.....fat is very important for proper brain function, but it needs to be the right fat! Omega 3 fatty acids are the essential building blocks of our brain and are important for learning, memory and focus.

VITAMIN K..vital for cognitive function and brain power ZINC...for enhancing memory and thinking ability.

VITAMIN D..for anyone whose mood is affected by lack of sunlight.

MAGNESIUM ..involved in healthy brain development, memory and learning.

PROBIOTICS...help with gut health which has a huge impact on our brain health.

B-COMPLEX...vitamin B6, B9 and B12 are often linked to brain health.

LECITHIN..contains choline which is a chemical your brain uses to communicate.

If you would like to arrange an instore consultation for advice on any of the above products just contact me at the MANOR WEST STORE, 066-7180690.

Until next time, stay healthy Deirdre
