EDITOR NOTE Hi everyone Welcome to Connect online, as you know we always feature our magazine online, but this month due to circumstances at present it is not possible to produce our print version so having the online connection with you all is even more important to us. We have some great bits for you to catch up with this issue other than the statistics of covid in our country, Kerry lady Zoe O Connor launches a new serial for all of us to check out, we also chat to charities in these times and what they are doing to keep up the funding they so desperately need, and we have a throwback to our recent Hair and Beauty awards to remind us all of what great fun we had just 10 days before all this happened in our lives. Nora Butler keeps us eating healthy and lots of health tips too. We always pride ourselves in being connected with our clients, doing our best to support and promote their businesses while always enduring to bring you our reader the very best of what’s going on in Kerry. It’s not an easy time for any of us and the uncertainty of where it’s all going is a very worrying time for everyone especially those of us with small businesses. Being stopped suddenly doing what you love to do everyday is a shock to the system, not to mention the change to lifestyle, but our eye should be firmly focused on the end goal and that is staying safe and keeping those we love safe. Young Kerry Author releases first Serial Connect caught up with young Kerry author and blogger, Zoe O Connor who has used her time in lockdown to write her first fictional serialised story - Duplicity. So Zoë tell us what inspired you to write Duplicity? Without realising it, I had the seeds of the story growing in my mind for quite some time, and when lockdown happened, I no longer had the excuse not to explore it! I never even considered writing a story like this before, but after writing a very rough draft of what is now chapter one, I realised that there really was a story there which I could build upon and flesh out. In essence, it’s a moral tale which explores the naivety which many girls carry forth into the dating world, and I wanted to deal with the idea of a ‘princess syndrome’ which can affect so many girls well into adulthood. As a personal venture, as my first fictional pursuit, it’s something that I’m really proud of, as it was something I never thought I would achieve. Who are the main characters? The story revolves around our narrator, a young female college student, and a guy she meets in the dating realm, called Will. I wanted to build Will as a character who displays all the signs of a Prince Charming figure, but who has this underlying edge to his personality which makes everyone uneasy, as if such shining qualities are all part of an elaborate facade. The narrator is never named, as I wanted her to be a figure with whom a female audience could resonate with. Since it comes from her perspective, the language itself is highly emotional and romantic to display some of the naive notions which she houses, which might just get her into trouble. decide to do this, instead of writing a book? After studying the early concepts of serialisation in college, I immediately really resonated with the idea, as I think such a form of publication possesses a power that is largely absent from modern media these days. With Netflix and all the streaming giants, everything is available instantly and I think that takes away from some of its power. I loved the idea of making people wait, because it gives an audience more opportunity to dwell on specifics and guess at plot lines, which wouldn’t be achievable with a regular novel. It also means that as an author I can rely on audience feedback and expand on certain plot lines or themes which people really respond too. It gives the story new life each
week, and I hope that as a concept it will become more common. Who is it aimed at? I would like to think that it would be very relatable to anyone who has had interaction with the modern dating sphere, with all of its pitfalls! Although I’m aiming it primarily at those in their twenties, with direct access to such a sphere, I wouldn’t
rule out any demographic as I think there is something for everyone in the moral message of the tale. If it were made into a movie, who would you like to play the main characters? Wow - this a fun one to even imagine! After watching Normal People being cast so beautifully in my opinion, it makes this question even more exciting to consider. I think I would like the narrator to be someone like Florence Pugh, and perhaps Will to be played by someone like Douglas Booth, even though I would favour an Irish cast! Tell us do you have any other projects in the pipeline? Having just completed my third year of college, and with a thesis looming next year, I’d hope to return to the roots of blogging and journalistic ventures while I still have the time! ‘Duplicity’ has really reawakened my passion for writing again, and reminded me of how much I’ve missed it! So I definitely don’t plan on stopping any time soon, and already have a few ideas which I’d hope to be able to expand on in the future! So how can people read Duplicity now! Even though I’m reviving the tradition of serialisation, I’m also adopting to modern times by solely publishing ‘Duplicity’ online in a format which I hope is accessible to all those who wish to read it! LOCKDOWNS, MELTDOWNS & SHUTDOWNS through the eyes of our regular contributor Tanya Whilst nobody can underestimate the surreal situation we are all in at the moment, we can take comfort in knowing we are all in it together. The global Covid-19 pandemic is affecting livelihoods, physical contact with loved ones and above all precious lives. Watching the news 24/7 can leave you feeling anxious , lonely and a bit unsettled about the future. So, I’ve been thinking of the positive and funny things I’ve experienced since we began lockdown. Here are a few to boost your spirits and give you a bit of a giggle. Yesterday I watched two people come across one another on the road. One of them instantly sprang back and nearly fell over in his effort to let the other know he was NOT to get too close. The other guy rose his hands in a kind of “I surrender, I come in peace “ gesture. Then there are the ones you meet who every time you take a step back they take one forwards trying to close the gap. This continues until you are either backed into a wall and contemplate jumping over it or they finally twig and re-open the gap allowing you your 6 feet of acceptable distance. It’s a veritable minefield but as the Tralee to Mallow train advises..... Mind the gap lads!!! Walkies..... I have Never seen so many dogs of all ages, sizes and breeds get so many walks. From the moment I open my curtains in the morning until I close them at bedtime I see madra upon madra ag siùl. At the beginning they looked like they couldn’t believe their luck and skipped along with dotey doggy grins of joy. Lately though I hear they are now hiding their leads and faking limps in their desperate attempts to get a bit of rest. They now whine when they hear the word “walkies” and really think they have it very woof. Being locked down with your family 24/7 means you start getting to know them now, warts and all. LBC ( Life Before Corona) your teenagers legged it from the house, only reappearing to eat and sleep. Shur they thought it was a hotel they were living in!! And 6 | Connect Kerry | May 2020
you were treated like a pariah and given a wide berth and the odd grunt now and again. Now that they are trapped you can finally get to know the stranger in your house better and vice versa. And it’s actually not as scary as you imagined..... most of the time. This also applies to partners. LBC you and your partner were like ships passing in the night, so hectic were your daily schedules. Now you realize that your other half is tooootttallly different to what you had in your head the past 14 years. For some it’s a pleasant surprise and you pat yourself on the back for choosing well. Others however start discreet inquiries about the best divorce solicitors in town and mentally divvy up the house contents a few times a day. Keeping in touch....Since lockdown began I find that not only am I in constant contact with my own family but I’m also reconnecting with people I’ve not heard from in yonks. Granted every call has the same ring to it ( “Isn’t this surreal “ “I wonder how much longer it’ll go on for” etc) but shur at least we are all talking. And who knew grannies would actually take to Skyping, FaceTiming, whatsapping etc like ducks to water!!! DIY... Houses and gardens have never looked so smart, and not a tidy towns competition in sight. Grass is cut on average 4.587 times a week and if your next door neighbor starts up his mower you feel obligated to follow suit. Nobody seems able to let the grass grow under their feet anymore. Ditto with the painting of houses.. Since we have all the time in the world now to watch paint dry, it appears to be something we seem to actually like...... and not in the least boring as was always rumored LBC. Husbands are being shooed out of houses (their own) with firm instructions to paint and not to come in until it’s done. And when they eventually come back in they are sent back out to collect the preordered paint for the

Word on the street is that some husbands ( who will remain anonymous) are now feigning falls off ladders, lending friends their ladders and the rise in tennis elbow is rising rapidly. LBC- We complained when we had to cook 3 meals a day. Nowadays we prepare 284 meals a day on average and consider it a great pastime altogether, and have the extra padding to show how much we actually like cooking now. *LBC- If someone asked you LBC where were you going you’d quip “Shur the guards wouldn’t ask me that”! And now....
times of crisis and we come together to celebrate in times of joy. This too shall pass and we will once again celebrate birthdays, weddings and anniversaries. We will meet for coffee and play dates. Hello to all our lovely readers, What strange times we are experiencing at the moment. I hope you are all keeping safe and healthy and that you are all get used to the new " normal" !!!!!. We have been closed for the last 6 weeks which is something I have never had to deal with before but we are only one of thousands of retail shops that had to do the same. I have always worked and the only way that I can function is to keep structure to my day, so my typical day is wake about 7.15, check Facebook, emails etc, get up have shower, breakfast, then I have mass on St Johns Parish website at 8.30,. I dress and do make up as if I am going to work in That's Perfect, I do an hour or 2 paperwork to do with shop, go for 2km walk, A bit of colouring, jigsaw visit my mom, staying at the gate, visit Mary O Mahony stay at gate, go for another walk, cook dinner, watch a bit of telly, keep in touch with my pals then bed. It isn't the most of exciting of days but it works for me. I suppose what I am trying to say is what ever we need to do to get through the day, that is what we need to do. When ever the ban is lifted and we are allowed open up Paul , Mary and myself will be so delighted to have our customers back and I want to let ye all know if any of ye have got accessories for weddings that had to be cancelled, and ye need to change outfit as it mightn't be suitable for new date, be assured we will exchange for more suitable colours or styles. We all have bad hair days but I think this pandemic has taken things to the limit so we catch up with expert Sean Taaffe to get his point of view on it all and maybe a few tips too . The salons are closed since mid March so most people at this stage are gone way beyond their 6 or 8 week time frame for a salon visit . Hairstyles have grown out of shape , greys are showing . Blondes have dark roots people are cracking up .... As hairdressers we are missing our clients terribly and can’t wait to get back behind the chair again . But we have to look on the bright side , the one thing we have more of now is time , time to do and time to think so here’s a few things that may help by using that time ...

No one normally has time to treat their hair the way they should, as in putting in regular treatment masks, most people will have one in the bathroom but haven’t used it, now is the time. However bad your roots are if you’re hair is super healthy and shiny it will look much better.

Get creative, if you have roots showing look at using hair bands which are very fashionable at the moment and can hide roots very well.

If you cannot cope with your roots and have to use box colour then a few things need to be followed . Make sure to skin test this is an absolute must as reactions can be severe and then try to apply to just the visible areas , for example if the hair is long the parting and hairline area ,or if the hair is short just do the roots , if you are blonde and have dark roots however I really would say stay away , dark roots will never be as bad as brassy coppery roots and the likelihood is this is what will happen .

Aim for 8 glasses a day for optimal hydration
Tip 2: I came across this next tip in on online article by one of the top facial specialists in New York. Within 60 seconds of stepping 0ut of the shower get a product on your face that is going to moisturise your skin.

Tip 3 I'm a big fan of products with Hyaluronic Acid as i think it's the ultimate ingerdient for hydration but what I didn't know is that to maximise your results that you should be applying it to wet skin. This is because it the molecules in Hyaluronic Acid actually draw water to it so if your skin is wet then applying any products with this ingredient are going to give your hydration levels a massive boost I have been using The Ordinary Hyaluronic 2% plus B5. Tip 4 I have touched on this before so I'm sure people are sick of hearing about it but I cannot stress how important the next product is and that's sun screen! I speak from experience as I have a lot of pigmentation from years of not heading this advice. SING YOUR WAY THROUGH COVID
I have Singing Groups in Killarney, Blackwater and Tureencahill. I am also Choir Director for Ard Churam Community Choir with over 100 members all over North Kerry. The Choir was founded in 2018 by Mairead Hanlon ( Age Activity Co Ordinator HSE) to create a social outlet for older people.I was asked to Direct the Choir and have enjoyed every minute of it ! We (used to) rehearse every Monday in the Chapel of Ard Churam Day Care Centre in Listowel. To date we have raised over E25,000 for the new Dementia Day Care Centre in Listowel, Sung with Fr Ray Kelly during Listowel Writers Week (2019) and made an EP( Together in Song), so it has been very exciting! Ofcourse due to Covid 19 and the many restrictions, people are just so lonely and isolated. They are missing all the social activities and meeting people etc. Anyone who is in a Choir or a singing group is really missing the Vocal Exercises, Songs etc...the joy of singing in a group is phenomenal and it puts people in great form ! I knew my singers were missing me so I decided to put the Classes online and people are loving it! The feedback is wonderful...it really is part of their day to sing! I start with Simple Vocal Exercises which involve Breathing from Diaphragm and filling the lungs, stance, diction and stretching the voice. Then I read through the song that we are about to sing... then I sing it and talk about how we would sing it with louds and softs etc... then we sing it up to speed. Even though this started for my Choirs and Singing Groups I am welcoming everyone to join in and enjoy it! The videos are uploaded each Wednesday and are accessible anytime worldwide to sing from your own home! No previous singing experience is necessary.

In the midst of the Covid crisis many distillers have decided to assist in the shortage of hand sanitizer by producing their own and newly opened Skelligsix18 in Caherciveen are one of those, they presented local services and frontline staff with supplies. Norma O Shea of Skellig six18 tells us ‘We have had great feedback from our local community in supplying World Health Organisation standard hand sanitiser. At the request of the local community we have now produced some bottles for use at home. Nora's Kitchen Recipes
A few quick and handy recipes this month The Chipotle Steak with Sweet Potato Chips Sweet potato chips make a delicious change from regular fries – and they go so well with steak
Ingredients · 1 Large Sweet Potato, peeled and cut into chips · Low-calorie cooking spray · 1 Small Red Pepper, deseeded and cut into wedges · 8 Baby Sweetcorn · Large pinch of chipotle chilli powder or flakes (see tip) · Large pinch of paprika · Pinch of garlic salt · 1 Lean Beef Steak, such as fillet or sirloin, visible fat removed · Juice of ½ lime, plus a wedge to serve · Small handful of Fresh Coriander, roughly chopped
Method
1. Boil the sweet potato chips for 5-6 minutes, or until just tender. Drain well and tip into a bowl, then toss with a little seasoning and spray with low-calorie cooking spray. 2. Put the red pepper and sweetcorn in another bowl, spray with lowcalorie cooking spray and set aside. 3. Mix the chipotle powder, paprika and garlic salt in a small bowl. Spray the steak on both sides with low-calorie cooking spray and rub with the chipotle mixture to coat. 4. Place a large non-stick griddle pan over a high heat. When smoking hot, add the steak, red pepper and sweetcorn and cook for 2 minutes. Turn the steak and peppers over and shake the pan to move the sweetcorn. 5. Add the sweet potato chips and cook for a further 2-3 minutes, turning the vegetables frequently. Remove the steak from the pan and leave to rest for 1-2 minutes. Sprinkle the lime juice over the vegetables and shake the pan to coat well.
Hunters Chicken Ingredients
- 1 tbsp red wine vinegar - 1 tsp sweet or hot smoked paprika - 1 tsp garlic granules - 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce - 2 x 400g cans chopped tomatoes - 4 smoked bacon medallions, visible fat removed - 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts - 250g of Kellys Vegetarian Pudding* - 200g grated mozzarella cheese - 400g green beans, trimmed - 15g fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped, to serve - 4 microwaved or oven-cooked baking potatoes, to serve
6. Put everything on a plate, scatter over the coriander and serve with a lime wedge.
Method
1. Preheat your oven to 200C/ fan 180C/gas 6. Put the vinegar, paprika, garlic, Worcestershire sauce and chopped tomatoes in a large, shallow, flameproof casserole dish. Place over a medium-high heat, bring to a simmer and cook for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. Season to taste. 2. Cut a pocket in each chicken breast and insert 75g of the vegetarian pudding. 3. Meanwhile, gently bash the bacon medallions to flatten them out and lengthen slightly. Stretch a piece of bacon over each chicken breast. 4. Nestle the chicken breasts into the sauce and spoon a little sauce over the top. Divide the mozzarella over the chicken breasts and bake in the oven for 20 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked through. 5.When the chicken’s almost ready, steam or boil the green beans for 3-4 minutes, then drain. Scatter the parsley over the chicken, then divide the chicken and sauce between 4 plates, and serve with the beans and baked potatoes.

KEEPING HEALTHY WHEN MEDICAL SERVICES ARE LIMITED DURING COVID -19 RESTRICTIONS
Since the Covid-19 pandemic hit our shores, medical services have been somewhat restricted in an effort to minimise the spread of infection and to protect both healthcare professionals and the general public. However, it is also important to utilise medical services so that you and your family remain healthy. Many people had reservations about the fact that face-to-face consultations have been replaced by telemedicine in many instances. We use SKYPE, Zoom and WhatsApp to communicate. They are obvious situations where patients need to be seen and that is facilitated with safe infection control measures. Feedback from patients has been very positive.
Minding Your Mental Health
Undoubtedly, the social restrictions are a challenge to everyone’s mental wellbeing. Dr. Mahadi, Consultant Psychiatrist at The Scotia Clinic stressed the importance of not stopping or reducing medications without talking to their doctor. Doing so could increase the risk of relapse. Our counsellor Mary Casey recommends that anyone who is feeling stressed should connect with family, friends by whatever means possible. Remember that exercise, healthy diet and mindfulness can help. Don’t hold back on linking into professional services if you feel a need to talk to a professional. Thankfully modern IT technology makes this possible.
Women’s Health, Pregnancy and Fertility
Understandably, women who are pregnant are very concerned about the effect of acquiring COVID and both themselves and their unborn baby. All of the evidence is very positive that the effects are not significant. Antenatal visits and scans are continuing. However, we are limiting the numbers in clinics so women attend on their own. Some consultations can be on social media so partners can FaceTime or WhatsApp to see scans and participate in decision making. Most of our antenatal education including breastfeeding classes are online and a new Patient Portal will be available in May where these classes can be
accessed. Many women are worrying about delays in getting contraception sorted. Pharmacies can extend prescriptions if you cannot get to your GP. The Mirena can be safely used for up to a total of six years until the restrictions are over. For lower dose coils such as Kyleena or Jaydiss a progesterone pill may need to be taken as additional protection. Always seek advice from your pharmacist or doctor if you are unsure. Menopausal women also have worries about accessing HRT, particularly as there are shortages of some medications such as patches and gel at present. These worries can be sorted by a reassuring chat with your pharmacist. Fertility care is an area that has been restricted significantly. At present IVF, IUI or any other fertility treatments are not possible at present. That restriction is about to be lifted and staying in contact with your clinic will keep you in the loop. Fertility restrictions have caused huge stress but it is an area that has a potential to trigger problems with infection. The Scotia Clinic will help couples to access emotional support though this. We are presently providing telemedicine consultations and all necessary tests. Couples will be ready to start treatments the minute restrictions are lifted.
Sick Children
Never ignore the possibility that your baby or child might be unwell. You can contact your GP or SouthDoc for advice. Both Dr. Leahy and Dr. Rizwan Khan are providing telemedicine consultations and can see emergencies when necessary. Our Speech and Language Team, Dominika and David have continued to provide on line care for patients. They have all new ideas such as communication boards and families and parents are being trained to provide the interventions. These interventions are so important for long term progress that they should not be interrupted or delayed. Remember there are professionals there to answer your questions and ensure you remain well. We keep our FB page updated with all new information. The key factor is to follow the professional advice- social distance, good hand hygiene, maintaining healthiness, avoid being in contact with people who are unwell. COPD Support Ireland Unveils New “Cocooning with COPD” Information Pack A new “Cocooning with COPD” information pack with tips and advice for protecting physical and mental well-being for people with COPD has been announced by COPD Support Ireland. People with COPD are one of the vulnerable groups more at risk of serious illness if they contract COVID-19 and are estimated to number half a million people in Ireland. The pack contains the COPD & Me self-management booklet, the Staying Well – Cocooning from Coronavirus booklet, and a COPD communication card which patients can complete with their healthcare professional in making an action plan to help them manage their COPD on a daily basis. It features information on COPD, its risk factors, symptoms and diagnosis, as well as providing techniques to cope with breathlessness, exercises that people can do at home, tips for minding mental health, and guidance on nutrition. The pack has been developed in conjunction with the HSE National Clinical Programme Respiratory and the COPD Adviceline. The pack is available to download at www.copd. ie or can be ordered for postal delivery free of charge by texting the word “COPD”, plus name and address to 51444 (standard network charges apply). .Prevent infection. Keep all your equipment such as nebulisers clean by wiping down or washing after use. Wash your own hands with soapy water before and after use. You should also keep your distance from other household members when using a CPAP or non-invasive ventilator as these are considered aerosol-generating devices. Remember to stay at home, wash your hands and don’t touch your face.

.Check your supplies. Make sure you have one month’s supply of your medicines so that you won’t run out unexpectedly. If you have a back-up prescription for steroids and antibiotics – a “rescue pack” – ensure that you have your supply of these and that they are in date. Many pharmacies are now offering a delivery service. .Breathe. Now is the time to really get into a routine of doing the controlled breathing exercises and chest clearance techniques you have been taught to help get rid of phlegm. They will help with relaxation too!

.Exercise. While you may be cocooning and advised to stay at home, you can still engage in physical activity which is so important to help improve breathlessness. The more you do, the more you will be able to do. Go out for a breath of

A phone call to ask them how they are doing in terms of managing their symptoms and to ask whether they might need to see a doctor, or to pick up some prescription items for their rescue pack, could make a huge difference to them. I would also urge people with COPD to pay close attention to their own signs and symptoms. They will know if they are having a flare-up of COPD and, if concerned, they should seek medical advice without delay so that they can be monitored. The COPD Adviceline is available on Freefone 1800 83 21 46 where people can speak fresh air in your back yard, garden or balcony or, if that’s not possible, why not do sit-to-stands, or march on the spot in the comfort of your own sitting room? .Eat well. Try to maintain a well-balanced diet, eating little and often rather than having big meals. Eating the right food can provide the energy your body needs to breathe and build a strong immune system to help prevent and fight infections. If you need help with your shopping being delivered, get in touch with your local authority which can help. Don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids too. .Don’t delay seeking help. .Mind your mind. Stress and anxiety are a common feature of living with COPD and likely to be even more so at this time. Take care of your emotional health and talk to family and friends, or your fellow COPD support group members, over the phone or online. COPD is perhaps more familiar to people as emphysema or bronchitis. While there is no cure for this lung condition, it is treatable and can be managed to give the best possible quality of life. The most obvious symptoms are a persistent cough with or without phlegm, and difficulty in breathing. While smoking is the predominant risk factor, recent research has shown that family history, chronic asthma, air pollution and occupational exposure to harmful fumes, dust or gases, also play a significant role. There are approximately 500,000 people in Ireland living with COPD yet, worryingly, only half of these have been formally diagnosed. According to the most recent statistics, there were 890 people hospitalised from Kerry as a result of COPD between 2016 and 2018. Indeed, COPD is the most common diseasespecific cause of emergency hospital admission among adults with Ireland having the highest hospitalisation rate for COPD of all OECD countries in 2015, the last year for which international data is available. COPD Support Ireland is the national umbrella body for COPD support groups nationwide and works to raise awareness of the condition, to advocate on behalf of patients and their families, to enable peer support and self-management, and to support research and educational initiatives.
People who have questions about how best to manage COPD, and who wish to speak to a specialist respiratory nurse for information and advice, can telephone the national COPD Adviceline on Freefone 1800 83 21 46. This is a call-back service and an appointment will be made for a nurse to return the call at a time to suit you. The line is open Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm.

Light Electric Ireland call on the public to support Pieta’s urgent appeal for donations and join together for ‘Sunrise’ on May 9th to mark the postponed Darkness into Light event Electric Ireland & Pieta are launching an urgent appeal for the public to donate at darknessintolight.ie to ensure that Pieta’s essential frontline services can remain in operation and continue to be delivered free of charge. On May 9th, it was expected that over 250,000 people would have come together on every continent to walk together highlighting the fight against suicide and self-harm. Darkness Into Light is the main annual source of funding for Pieta. As the walks cannot now take place as planned in May, a Darkness Into Light ‘Sunrise’ appeal is taking place on that day. This special appeal encourages people to donate what they can to this vital charity and to come together while remaining apart by getting up at 5:30am to watch the sunrise and to show community and solidarity with those impacted by suicide. Pieta are also asking people to spread the message and offer hope by sharing their sunrise moment using the #DIL2020. The need for Pieta's lifesaving services is greater than ever as COVID-19 impacts not only on the nation's physical health but its mental health too. As people find themselves worried, anxious, under strain, financially impacted and in many cases isolated and alone, the effect on mental health is significant. Recent research has also confirmed that 1 in 5 Irish people are experiencing clinically defined levels of depression. Even before COVID-19 the public need for Pieta’s services was on the increase, with calls to Pieta’s helpline up 49% year on year while text messages to Pieta had increased by 46%. Elaine Austin, CEO of Pieta said: “As a result of Covid-19, our helpline has seen an increase in calls from people all over the country who are in crisis right now with many others presenting with high anxiety. Our bereavement counsellors are supporting people who have lost loved ones and who are struggling to come to terms with their loss in a world where 32 | Connect Kerry | May 2020
friends and family cannot grieve together as a result of the lockdown. Funding from the public has never been more vital to keep Pieta’s door open. The Darkness Into Light walk will hopefully take place later in the year, but we can’t wait - we’re urgently asking people to donate, whatever they can. This will help fund our services, ensuring we can continue to support those in their darkest hours and to keep delivering our one-toone counselling. While we are devastated that we won’t come together physically on May 9th , we will share a special moment of togetherness by getting up at 5:30am and watching the sunrise. We would also appreciate if people can wear yellow or a previous year’s t-shirt that day to show support for those impacted by suicide.” Marguerite Sayers, Executive Director, Electric Ireland, said: “At Electric Ireland we believe that when people rally together, we can achieve anything. We have been committed to supporting Pieta through the Darkness Into Light event for the last
seven years. Given the unprecedented challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic, now more than ever, we are conscious of the importance of caring for people’s mental health and the urgent need to support Pieta’s vital work. We are appealing to people all over Ireland to come together, while remaining apart, and support this urgent appeal to ensure that Pieta, who are on the frontline of suicide prevention, can continue saving lives.” Darkness into Light has been postponed but Pieta needs support more than ever before. 80% of Pieta funds come from the general public and these funds have been greatly impacted due to social distancing restrictions. BUMBLEance BBQ 2020 People are being encouraged to get on-board and BBQ for BUMBLEance over the May Bank Holiday weekend. BUMBLEance is an invaluable FREE service which helps Ireland’s youngest patients and prides itself on delivering smiles. Due to the Covid19 pandemic the charity’s fundraising has been devasted and they are asking for the public’s help to keep the wheels turning into the future. Charity Co-Founder and voluntary CEO Tony Heffernan said “BUMBLEance is 100% reliant on public support and fundraising; the impact of this pandemic has almost annihilated our income streams. BUMBLEance continues to support sick children week in, week out, with our free service. We are kindly asking people to fire up the BBQ this May Bank Holiday weekend and text BUZZ to 50300 to donate €4 toward helping our King and Queen Bees.” There is a special significance around the date which has been chosen for the event as Mary Heffernan, Co-founder of the charity explains “Our Liam grew his angel wings on 4 th May 2014, on our 13 th wedding anniversary. We want people to cherish this time with their families and do some good too along the way. Tony and I know first-hand the importance of the service as Liam had his Angel Trip from hospital to home on BUMBLEance before passing away in our arms. This is our children’s legacy and we are pleading with people to help us protect it and allow us help many other children across
Ireland” There have been over 11000 trips nationwide since B U M B L E a n c e ’s inception and there are hundreds of families availing of the charity’s services, all of which are FREE. BUMBLEance continues to work tirelessly during the Covid19 pandemic and one of the King Bees availing of the service during this time is Noah Quish from Co Limerick. Una, Noah’s mother said “BUMBLEance means so much to us, as Noah has a lot of serious conditions it’s a relief to have a safe and stress-free trip. We used BUMBLEance two weeks ago for Noah’s emergency appointment and it was nice to have a safe and stress-free trip during this pandemic. I think with everyone saving money on diesel/petrol etc, a donation to BUMBLEance is such a worthy cause and so much appreciated by us families. BUMBLEance is part of The Saoirse Foundation which was founded by Tony and Mary Heffernan in 2010 after their young daughter, Saoirse, was diagnosed with the rare and fatal neurological condition Batten Disease. This brave little girl grew her Angel wings on 18th January 2011. She was only 5 years and 7 months old. Tragically the Heffernan’s
son Liam was also diagnosed with Batten Disease. He became the first child to travel on BUMBLEance in September 2013. He sadly lost his battle against Batten Disease at the tender age of 5 years and 10 months. BUMBLEance is the world’s first fully interactive, state of the art, Children’s National Ambulance Service. It provides a national service for critically and seriously ill children, who require transportation between their home and children’s hospitals, hospices, national treatment centres and respite centres. “BUMBLEance also provides a very unique and specialised service through its end of life Angel Trips. An Angel Trip is designed for a child in palliative care who is making his or her final journey on earth. Before the Angel Trip service, parents would often have to drive themselves home with their loved one or to take a taxi. We work to provide some comfort during a heart wrenching time for families,” says Tony. PLACES FILLING FAST AT KERRY COLLEGE Dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic is no easy task. Its effect on our society in Kerry has been swift and wide ranging. For so many of us, there is a growing desire to return to normal or to make plans to move on. Meanwhile, school leavers have more questions than answers about exams, exam corrections, CAO offers and third level enrolments.
In recent weeks, we’ve have seen an increase in calls and emails to our Admissions Office. It seems that parents and students are starting to rethink their plans for academic year 2020/21. Many school leavers we speak with are thinking about third-level but arent sure what to do this year. A lot are looking at a year in a College of Further Education and Training (FET) to assess their options. And this is where we can help. Figuring out the next step in anything is often difficult. So many choices. So much to read and think about. The fear of getting it wrong. Further Education and Training (FET) offers progression opportunities to suit every interest. Kerry College is a new, integrated FET college which offers both Further Education (FE/PLC) and Training courses. We have 3 campus locations in Tralee – at Clash Road, Denny Street and Monavalley. Our Listowel campus caters to the wider North Kerry area. We offer qualifications at QQI Level 5 and Level 6. Our website offers clear, concise information on what we offer. You can pick a course based on the outcome you want. Choose from courses for employment, courses for third-level progression and apprenticeships. If the FET route is something you're looking at for the Autumn, here are a few things to note: RANGE OF COURSES Our courses for progression are geared toward getting you into third-level. APPLY EARLY Our courses have limited capacity and many are already half full. We are advising students to apply early as we fill our courses on a first come, first served basis.
SINGLE FEE OF 130 EURO Kerry College removed it’s online application fee this year. You only need to pay the 130 euro registration fee. You can do this on our website or at registration. 390 POINTS You can achieve a total of 390 points during your year at Kerry College. These points provide entry to a range of thirdlevel programmes. PERFORM BETTER AT THIRD-LEVEL SOLAS released figures last month that show the clear benefits of studying at a FET college. 75% of FET students who move on to higher education complete their degree. By contrast, only 50% of 300points students who get to third-level via the CAO finish their degree. INTEGRATED WORK PRACTICE Many of our courses have work practice baked in. This is valuable as you can start to build links and contacts in your chosen sector. When you start at third-level, the experience and connections you have are a real bonus. GET READY FOR UNIVERSITY For some school leavers, making the jump to independent living is too much, too soon. A way around this is to consider a year at a FET college to get used to living or travelling away from home. You'll experience a college environment, semesters, independent learning and research assignments. This is a very useful bridge – getting you ready for life at thirdlevel.
MAKES FINANCIAL SENSE Making the decision to study in Kerry saves time and money. There’s less travel. There are no direct accommodation costs. FET students can apply for a SUSI Grant, Training Payment or Back to Education Allowance. SUSI’s online application system is now open. You need the details of your course choice to apply. Kerry College graduate Erica McGlynn did Sports and Recreation Studies with us. She is now a first year Sports Studies and Physical Education student in University College Cork: “I’ve always had a passion for sport and the Kerry College course taught me the key skills to achieve what I wanted as well as giving me a positive learning experience. It was a vital stepping stone for me to achieve my goal to attend university.” We also get many queries about our courses for employment and apprenticeships. For now, these courses are on-pause, but our advice is to apply and we'll confirm start and re-start dates when we can. Even though these are uncertain times, remember there are always options.
