EDITOR'S NOTE Hi everyone Its August, Kerry are All Ireland Champions, The Rose of Tralee International Festival is about to happen, so it is a wonderful time to be a Kerry person.

It’s a bit strange talking about a Kerry win in August but look a win is a win anytime of the year so let’s celebrate and thank the great team of 2022, their management and their families for the many sacrifices they have made all year to bring us such enjoyment and sense of pride in our County.

We also chat to Kerry Rose Edaein O Connell, a fabulous lady who is looking forward to the next few weeks.

Kerry is renowned for good food, and great hospitality so we took a trip around to see what is on offer in the county, be it a nice coffee and cake or an evening meal with a difference Kerry has lots to offer.

We also have lots of news of other events happening around the county in festivals and race meetings and lots lots more so enjoy reading it all about it.

And of course, its nearly back to school time so we chat to a few experts to share their thoughts on getting your younger members of the family focused again for another year of education. There are some great points in this feature so make sure to read through it, Until next month Take care

NATURAL SUPPORT FOR URINARY TRACT INFECTION A URINARY TRACT INFECTION can involve any part of your urinary system including the bladder and Kidneys. Symptoms typically include needing to urinate often, pain when urinating and pain in your side or lower back. Anyone can get a UTI, but they are more common in women. This is because the urethra (the tube that carries urine out of the body) in females is shorter and closer to the anus, where E.Coli bacteria are common. Though a UTI more commonly happens in the urethra and bladder, bacteria can also travel up the ureters and infect your kidneys. It is important to treat symptoms of a UTI as soon as you begin to experience symptoms to help prevent a more serious infection such as a kidney infection.

Drinking plenty of fluids especially water can help remove extra bacteria from your urinary tract, 6 to 8 glasses daily is recommended. Urination can play a big role in helping rid your body of bacteria. Urinating frequently may help reduce your risk of developing an infection, especially if you have a history of reoccurring UTI’s. Urine is a waste product and each time you empty your bladder you are removing that waste from your body. Be aware of liquids which may irritate your bladder, these include, alcohol, citrus juices, caffeinated drinks and spicy foods.

D-MANNOSE is one of the most effective natural remedies to help treat and prevent symptoms of urinary tract infections. It works by stopping certain bacteria sticking to the bladder walls, the bacteria sticks to the D-Mannose instead. This allows the bacteria leave the body along with the urine. Fewer bacteria in the bladder helps lower your risk of urinary tract infections and helps alleviate any symptoms you may be experiencing. You will find D-MANNOSE in your local Horans Healthstore, along with some helpful tips and advice which can help reduce your risk of reoccurring symptoms.

You should always speak with your GP if you have symptoms and experience fever, back pain or vomiting.

A few tips for purchasing scented flowers The beauty in plants is not just always in the scent. The hydrangea represents gratitude, grace and beauty. It also radiates abundance because of the lavish number of flowers and the generous round shape. Its colours symbolise love, harmony and peace as the flower is available in pinks, blues and whites. This flower looks amazing in the garden, but just as beautiful on a dinner or book table.

Hello August from all at Ballyseedy, especially the garden centre team. At this point I’m sure your gardens are in full bloom with butterfly, bee and ladybird activity, creating a magical world especially for those of you with young children.

A very fond and magical memory in my world was my beautiful daughter Abigail at four years of age, running through our meadow, her blond curls bouncing with her dog Timmy, where she ‘believed’ she was being ‘chased’, by a butterfly!!!

A walk around the garden in the evening will help you relax after a long day, especially a garden with scent.

A few tips for purchasing scented flowers include; • Follow your Nose, everyone has different senses, so take some time in your local garden centre to smell the beautiful flowers and enjoy the range of fragrances nature has to offer • Aromatic herbs such as mint, sage, rosemary and lavender, to complement your culinary creations in the kitchen • The heavily scented David Austin and Hartness range of Roses can be planted either in a rose bed or in an existing shrub bed to create that extra uplift • Summer offers the best scent, for example, dianthus, rosemary, lemon verbena & lavender to name but a few • If you are gifting plants, make sure to do a little research, as scented plants to me represent caring 4

Lavender has a strong, distinct, and calming effect. One of the most used floral scents for perfumes, potions & lotions all over the world.

It is warm and soothing to our senses and reminds us of those BBQ evenings.

Lemon Verbena has an extremely strong, lemony scent when crushed, essential potpourri and can also be used as a culinary herb.

Nepeta/Catmint is an aromatic herb that is commonly grown in the garden.

Cats can safely nibble and eat catmint leaves, stems and flowers. Catmint is very attractive to bees and other beneficial pollinating insects.

Dianthus is a tried and trusted plant, offering a long season of scent and colour in borders and containers with minimal maintenance. This plant is also a very successful coastal plant.

Édaein O’ Connell becoming this year’s Kerry Rose

Édaein O’Connell was recently selected out of 23 finalists as winner of the Kerry Rose selection at the Siamsa Tíre theatre in Tralee which was hosted by Daithi Ó Sé. She follows in the prestigious footsteps of a long line of Kerry Roses who have done the County proud, including our most recent, SallyAnn Leahy who has been Kerry Rose since 2019. Growing up in Glenderry, near Listowel, Édaein is a proud north Kerry girl. A former pupil of both Dromclough National School and the Presentation Convent Secondary School in Listowel town, she then moved on to attend NUIG in Galway city to study Civil Law. With her thirst for knowledge strong, she went on to complete a higher diploma in Business Studies in NUIG and then achieved a master’s in digital marketing from DIT in Dublin. The youngest of three with 2 older brothers and the very first baby born in 1995 a fact that her parents get great pride and enjoyment from! Mom, Mary O Connell was a civil servant in Listowel whilst her Dad Séan O Connell, was the local postman and both retired now. A thoroughly remarkable, accomplished and fascinating individual, I recently sat with Édaein to catch up on what can only be described as a whirlwind few weeks for herself, her family and the town of Listowel.

going to enter it would only ever be for the Kerry Rose. When the selection process came along this year I saw it as my chance to finally enter so I said I would go for it. The timing was right and I also had a “healthy” nudge from my mother who herself is such a huge fan of the festival! So I just went for it and thankfully it worked out well in the end for me.

Édaein, how did the idea of you entering for this year’s Rose selection come about?

Growing up so close to Tralee, the Rose of Tralee was always such a huge part of my life so I suppose it was always something that was in the back of my mind about entering the selection process.

I was living in Dublin up until March 2020 so the timing was just

never quite right for me? Going for the Dublin Rose was never going to be an option for me, if I was

How did it feel to hear your name when Daithi announced the winner?

To be honest it was all such a blur I think I was so shocked having been selected? I know people say this but I genuinely was not expecting my name to be called. I remember sitting back and looking around at all the girls and thinking which of these girls will be picked out? So when I heard my own name called out it just turned into such a blur! I do remember turning to Daithi and saying is this actually really happening and he said “It is, It actually is!”. I just think there is something extra special with being selected as the Kerry Rose, being local you are just absolutely delighted. I have to say, my own locality and the town of Listowel in particular have just blown me away with the support they have shown me since my selection. My mother, as I previously mentioned, is a huge fan of the festival so she was just over the moon and like myself, she said it’s all a blur it happened so quick!

But funnily enough, my Mom and myself attended the Dublin selection about 3 weeks after my own selection night. When they announce Claire Connolly as the Dublin Rose I started crying as did my Mom and the other Rose’s in attendance it was such a happy and emotional time! We had no recollection of my own night really as strange as it sounds so it was just lovely to see someone else’s from the outside. On a personal level it was such a huge boost for my family, Unfortunately the last few years have been difficult in that the end of last year my Nan passed away.

She was a lovely lady and had lived to 96 so she is very missed by all of us. Following on from losing Nan, just 4 weeks later my

What was the selection process like to experience?

It was an amazing process, unfortunately I missed the first two events due to work commitments. I work as a freelance journalist so I had to honour the work I had committed too. But the rest of the process was incredible. The day of the selection was so enjoyable, meeting up with all the other girls was fantastic and meeting Daithi for the first time of course! The interview process with the judges was really lovely, I think people feel that its this really tense day and interview but it really isn’t. It is such an enjoyable day and I remember coming out and ringing my mom afterwards and telling her it was such a lovely experience. In Kerry the selection process is a full day culminating in the evening event. It was such a lovely experience getting ready, putting on the dress and sitting with the girls, it was great and so much fun.

uncle passed away after a battle with cancer so it really was a difficult end to 2021 for all of us. When I told them I was entering the selection they were all behind me every step of the way. All of them said it just gave them such a boost, the entire family so I am just so happy I got to do that for them. It has put everyone in great form, we are now talking about something happy and exciting so it has been just great really.

What are you most looking forward too over the next few weeks besides the night itself?

I am really excited about attending the Rose ball because really, it’s the first night coming into Tralee. But I have to say I am so excited about the parade because I have great memories of attending the parade as a child. My Mom would take me in every year to see it and to get to see all the Roses up close. She only mentioned lately to me how much she is looking forward to seeing me in the parade so it has really come full circle. I am a freelance journalist so I work for myself which can be a huge balancing act at times so I am looking forward to the tour starting August 11th to take the opportunity to switch off from work and just immerse myself in the Rose experience and enjoy every minute of it. It is a really busy itinerary but sounds like so much fun so I am so excited about it.

Have you received support and tips from previous Rose’s?

SallyAnn is an absolute angel and has genuinely been so supportive to me. I met her out 2 weeks ago and gave me so much practical advice! She said to make sure to have comfortable shoes on and to get an ice bucket and soak my feet in it at the end of the long days on the heels! But besides that, she did something that really meant a lot to me. She made me a scrapbook so that I could make a record of my journey as a rose and she actually started it off for me. She has been texting me throughout and even Celine who was the Rose before SallyAnn, she reached out to me too. Ann Marie Hayes who was the 2012 Rose contacted me during the week to so I was just completely blown away by the level of support offered by the girls. They are genuinely looking out for me and so supportive. The sense of community between previous Rose’s and current is phenomenal. It really is a case of once you are in you are in for life! On the Sunday after my selection I was at Listowel races, while I was in the bathroom at the race course a woman approached me. She was Muirne Hurley who was actually the 1994 Rose of Tralee and we had a lovely chat. Also, seprately to that, Trudi O' Sullivan who was the 1993 Rose of Tralee, she sent me the most beautiful card to my house it was really nice of her. So the support has just been incredible.

When it comes to being a Rose, style is a huge part. Have you started choosing outfits yet?

The local boutiques and designers have been amazing to me. As part of my prize for winning Kerry Rose I received items from the likes of Jasmine in Tralee, Macbees in Killarney and That’s Perfect in Tralee.

Previous to my selection I would have admired their products and only dreamed of owning some of them so I am so grateful to them.

for me also so to even think about that is a dream come true. Carol Kennelly will also be designing pieces for me which is something beyond my wildest dreams so really I feel very fortunate to be supported by so many wonderful, generous individuals and companies. I must also mention that so many wonderful boutiques in Listowel have reached out to me offering items for me to wear so I would like to acknowledge them and thank them too.

On a personal level, how has your own style and idea’s merged with the typical Rose style?

I love the fact it has also made me look more closely at my own wardrobe and to be conscious of reusing items I have already.

The festival organisers have been encouraging us to be a lot more sustainable and to reuse where we can and that is an ethos to which I am very familiar with. My Mom would have always told me growing up not to buy clothing if I couldn’t wear it at least 5 times so this notion of wearing something once and once only is not for me. With that said, some boutiques have offered to loan clothes too which I think is a fantastic idea. I wouldn’t accept items just for the sake of it, I want to make sure I can reuse them, mix and match and that also I feel like myself in them. Being comfortable in what I am wearing is very important to me.

Finally Édaein, what does it mean to you to represent your county?

I live only 20 minutes from Tralee and here in Listowel we have our own festival, the Listowel races so I understand just how important these festivals are. It’s not just economically, while that’s fantastic in its own right, I think just for the general morale especially in Kerry where we are so proud of our traditions. We have Listowel and Killarney races, Puck Fair, but the Rose of Tralee is just unique. What I have even found in my time so far as the Kerry Rose, people are just so proud of it all. Even for the calendar, the Rose of Tralee is such a signifier of what time of the year we are in, people plan holidays around it. It is such a big part of the summer here in Kerry almost like a celebration of the end of the holidays. The Rose of Tralee is an International festival which is so unique in itself. Especially this year to see the changes in the rules also has been fantastic and so welcome, I’m all for it! I was never a sports type of girl, I was never any good at football so I was never going to be representing my county in sports so for me this is like my opportunity to represent my county. I am such a proud Kerry woman, I adore the county so this has been the biggest honour I have ever been afforded. To be part of a festival that I have watched all my life and has been such a big part of my life is just incredible. I’m still pinching myself I can hardly believe it is happening to me! I am so excited not just for myself but for my family, the own of Tralee to have it back again it’s fantastic.

Festival season is finally here! Whether you’re dancing till dawn or getting your groove on at the Silent Disco!!

By planning ahead, using your choice power at mealtimes and maximising your Body Magic, you’ll have all the tools to enjoy every minute while keeping your weight loss singing.

As with any holiday or special occasion, you have three choices when it comes to Food Optimising:​ • Follow the plan, as usual, making the most of all the Free Food available • Give yourself the freedom to enjoy eating out while staying in control, with a little flexibility • Leave slimming behind (knowing that you might gain a little) and get back on track 100% as soon as you get home

Headlining Food Choices

You might not be able to control every aspect of the food you eat, but you can make some savvy decisions at the food stalls: Jacket Potatoes: Have your spud without butter and load it with Free toppings like beans, tuna and salad.

Barbecues: Choose lean cuts of beef, lamb, chicken or pork.

Pasta: Tomato-based sauces such as arrabbiata are much lower in Syns than their creamy counterparts (think carbonara and alfredo) and they’re more likely to contain plenty of Speed Free Foods.

Mexican: Veggie chilli and rice is a great alternative to nachos laden with soured cream and guacamole.

The importance of strength training for women.

Thankfully us women are learning the importance of including weight training or strength training into our fitness regime. We are beginning to ditch the endless hours on treadmills for deadlifts and dumbbells and the myth of 'weights make women big and bulky" is being put to bed. While we still need Cardiovascular training for heart and respiratory health, strength training is a must for Fat loss, toning, injury prevention and much more.

Heart health

Cardiovascular diseases are one of the leading causes of death of adult women. Though aerobic exercise, such as running or swimming, is beneficial and beneficial for heart health, weight training has additional benefits providing a greater increase in blood flow and a longerlasting drop in blood pressure after exercise. Strength training results in a stronger usually bigger heart which will be more efficient at pumping blood around your body. All good.

Bone health

Bones become weaker with age, a key risk factor in developing osteoporosis, Women are four times more likely to develop osteoporosis than men and postmenopausal women in particular are at greater risk for brittle bones due to hormonal changes in their bodies Weight training increases bone mineral content and bone density and can help to prevent or delay osteoporosis. Strength training not only means stronger muscles but stronger bones too.

Fat loss and toning

When we chat with a new client at the gym 90% of them want the same thing to " lose a little weight and "tone up" and I don't want to get bulky" . This basically means dropping body fat whilst increasing lean muscle mass, and the proven most effective way to do this is strength training (combined with adequate nutrition). Thankfully, more and more women no longer fear that weights will make them big and bulky.

Not only does strength training effectively burn body fat during training but your metabolism remains elevated for up to 24 hours afterwards as our bodies repair the tiny tears made to your muscles during training meaning that your body will continue to burn fat long after you stop exercising. Adequate protein and carbohydrate should be consumed after training to maximise this process. An increase in lean muscle mass results in a more efficient metabolism and a higher metabolism means more calories burnt throughout the day just to maintain your new toned body.

Win win situation.

Improved sporting performance

Though not necessarily femalespecific, strength training can benefit your performance in other sporting activities.

Whether your sport requires the ability to run faster, jump higher, tackle harder or go longer, your performance will be hugely improved by incorporating strength training into your training regime. Regardless of the sport, effective strength and conditioning programmes are now paramount to athletic performance globally.

Injury prevention

Weight training can help to prevent injuries by strengthening and stabilising muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons and ultimately improving joint stability. Greater balance and stability are associated with a reduced risk of falls and injuries both during exercise and daily activities. Since Strength training often revolves around functional movement- ie squats and Deadlifts it maintains strength in these areas as well as improving mobility. Thought properly it also ensures the correct execution of lifting which will transfer into everyday living.

Mental health

Young Irish women have the some of the highest levels of depression in Europe. Women are twice as likely to be diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and women also tend to be less self-confident and negatively evaluate their physique far more frequently than men often feeling under pressure to look a certain way. Lifting weights has been shown to alleviate depressive and anxiety symptoms, boost self-esteem, reduce stress and improve overall body image.

Lifting weights not only releases "happy hormones" but also gives us a huge sense of achievement. Nothing feels better than lifting weight safely and confidently. It is empowering.

Improved sleep quality

Strength training may improve sleep quality by reducing the amount of stress hormones released by the body. It can also help to fall asleep quicker and wake less frequently throughout the night.

Bathrooms4U has developed and grown into one of Irelands most recognisable brands. From the quality delivered to the infamous yellow duck, you are never in doubt as to the brand.

Recently, company owner, Alan O Sullivan took on the decision to open a brand new HQ premises in Manor West. I sat with Alan to chat about how that has been for him.

Alan, the new HQ is a welcome addition to Manor West, what prompted you to go ahead with the move?

The move to Manor was a very welcome and an overdue one! It’s an 8,000sq ft premises which has allowed us to finally have the showroom that represents Bathrooms4U. The main purpose was to provide a bigger retail showroom to sell the product directly to the customer, to give them the option to call in and see for themselves exactly what we have to offer. Be it a shower or a hot tub, we would like customers to be able to get a feel for products as opposed to buying from a website. This premises will allow us to expand our operations in Kerry while establishing it as our new business headquarters. Over the years I have opened premises in Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Kerry so to bring our HQ to its permanent residence in Tralee is something I am proud of. I have worked tirelessly to build a brand that I can be proud of.

What do you think has been behind the success of Bathrooms4U? I take great pride in that I trained and produced some of my top competitors, which is fantastic for the customer to keep a sense of healthy competition, but Bathrooms4U has remained first and foremost, Irelands top bathroom fitting and supply service, something I am immensely proud of. I have kept it a standalone brand, not linking in with other companies because it is important for me that I can stand over and guarantee all works carried out in a customer’s home or premises. When you buy into Bathrooms4U, you are buying into a company and product that is steeped in experience and expertise. I personally have over 30 years’ experience in the profession, my company director, Seamus Scanlon has over 20 years with me, our higher end staff have over 100 years combined experience and there really is no price on that. Our front of house staff and team leaders have developed a strong infrastructure that I can proudly promote to every customer that comes through our doors.

Can you tell our readers why they should come to Bathrooms4U? Budgeting and planning are our two biggest strengths. We have a warehouse of over 100,000sq

A Peek in my Wardrobe and my go to Outfits I was scrolling through my grid on Instagram and couldn’t help but notice my style patterns and go to outfits. I am talking easy, fail-safe uniforms for every occasion, be it work, every day or date night. So here is a snapshot of my style and gander inside my everyday wardrobe.

Werk it!

Workwear takes up the majority of my wardrobe.

Not surprisingly, as most of us work 5 days a week! Still waiting on that EuroMillions win! I have curated quite a big collection throughout the years of winter and summer Dress - Lavish, blaze blazers that I wear on rotation. r - Riverisland and Most of them are Zara or Riverisland.

Mules - H&M When choosing a blazer, I always look at the material content and try to invest in ones that use high quality fabrics. I try to also go for blazers that have a lining material that’s breathable, i.e. Tencel, cotton etc. Blazers smarten up every outfit and make me feel polished and put together. For work, I tend to opt for one of two options…. If you have been following my page for a while, you won’t be surprised to hear it’s a knit dress and blazer. So comfy and effortless. Local boutiques, as well as the high street like H&M, Zara, River Island and Dunnes all carry a great selection each year of knit dresses. I tend to go for a plain block coloured knit with no pattern. In winter I team the knit dress with ankle/knee high boots and a coat and in summer time it’s a pair of nude mules and blazer. Everyday errands

What I wear depends on my mood and the type of day I have planned. When I get dressed each day, the first thing I do is check the weather forecast. For those everyday outfits, be it for shopping or chasing your three-year-old around the park, comfort is key. Its either a pair of leggings, trainers and oversized sweatshirt or a pair of jeans and a linen shirt, teamed with 22

Yes, they were a BIG splurge but they are so comfy, go with everything and the amount I wear them, has brought the cost per wear right down. Zara and Massimo Dutti also do good dupes from time to time.

Girls night

Jeans and a nice top. I know, how predictable!? But it’s a go to option for most of us.

However, the nice top bit, is often hard to find! I always go to the high-street for tops and tend to go for a neutral colour. That way it will go with everything. In this picture, I Blazer, jeans and mules - Zara, have teamed this plain white, Top - Gallery at Dunnes Stores, high necked top from Gallery Bag - Louis Vuitton in Dunnes, with a pair of jeans, blazer and high sandals from Zara. It’s a classic outfit that wont date and can be pulled out, year after year.

Out out!

For date night or a big night out, I often go for a dress or mini skirt. I tan the night before with my beloved St Tropez tan and rinse off the next morning. I have always loved a mini and feel so dressed up when I wear one. Legs out, so the top part is always a bit Skirt – Zara, Linen Shirt - H&M, more covered up. In this picture, Denim Jacket – Next.

I am wearing the most beautiful shade of blue mini from Zara and a H&M white linen shirt. Also, how can I write an article about go to outfits and not mention the LBD. Keep it simple and it never fails!

Who’s 4 Shoe’s is one of Kerry’s primary footwear destinations.

With a highly regarded reputation for impeccable customer service, attention to detail and the fabulous warm welcome offered by sisters Grainne and Maria, it’s no wonder they have enjoyed 22 years in business. We popped in for a chat to find out more about the business.

Grainne, it’s a pleasure to sit and chat with you and best wishes to your sister Maria who is hopefully enjoying the fine weather whilst on maternity leave! Can you tell our readers at Connect how you came to start your business?

Absolutely, our introduction to the world of retail came from my parents, they had a furniture shop at the top of High Street, Killarney called the Killarney Carpet Centre. So really we have always been involved, we all grew up in the shop helping and working through our teen’s there too. We took the lead from them as such and carried through to where we are today. My own love affair with shoes began when I was seven years old and about to make my First Holy Communion…. an advert on television captivated me, it was for “Magic Steps – Shoes fit for a Princess” and I begged my Mom for them. A trip to Hilliard’s Department Store on Main Street in Killarney was promised and from that day on, I was hooked on shoes. Along with my love for shoes, I also love children, so at 19, I grabbed life by the horns and opened First Steps Footwear in 2000. I threw myself heart and soul into the business, working in the shop by day and waitressing at night. I was no stranger to hard work, my dad has built the family business from scratch, so I was learning from the expert.

I completed every shoe fitting course available to me, constantly updating my knowledge and skill set, and thankfully, I am a real people person, so customer service came naturally to me. In 2006, my sister, Maria, joined the business and opened Who’s 4 Shoes, a Ladies shoe shop in the premises next door. However, in 2010, we decided to join forces in the one premises and we haven’t looked back since.

How did you decide what kind of products you would bring in to you store?

We were young when we started and very much interested in fashion, we would have always considered ourselves very fashion forward in what we wore and what we liked. But we have really found the brands that we want to work with and our niche in the market too which always helps! We are very proud to be stocking some beautiful Irish labels including; Bourbon by Amy Huberman, 24

4 Shoe’s

Una Healy Footwear Collection, Lloyd and Price by Tommy Bowe and Kate Appleby. We also stock Tamaris, Geox, Pitillos and Menbur. So really it came down to stocking footwear that we ourselves would wear, ensuring the quality is of high standard and a reasonable price point.

You stock an extensive range of children’s footwear, can you tell us more about that and the service offered?

We know how important shoes are for children, and we are lucky enough to be part of children’s lives in Killarney, from fitting their first shoes, Communion Shoes and School Shoes to helping them choose shoes for their Debs Ball, we now have some of our customers buying their wedding shoes with us and continuing the tradition by bringing their own children for new shoe fittings!

At First Step Footwear we stock all the top brands available in the children’s market in Ireland, we cater for all the children’s needs and our service includes special fittings, AFO’s and orthotics. We were delighted to be contacted directly from Cork University Hospital to come on board as a linked in service for providing orthotics, it is a service we are immensely proud of. Also, for children with additional needs, we have a specialist service, in that we can offer appointments or even out of hours service if the child needs extra attention.

How has the last 3 years affected your business with the pandemic?

We had just received a full stock of spring summer when the first lockdown was announced and like everyone else, we presumed it would be fine and we would reopen after the two weeks which then turned to 12. But I will say this, our locals were absolutely phenomenal, they did everything to try keep us in business when we were closed and when we reopened. In the middle of the pandemic we actually went online for the first time so that was a very positive thing to come out of it.

Finally, Grainne, what would you like to say to any customers reading this today?

We have always been proud of the service we offer, our relationships with our customers who have been so loyal over the years. We would like to thank them for their custom and look forward to welcoming them and new faces into the shop for many years to come.

Ask the Pharmacist In August’s instalment of Ask The Pharmacist, Mounthawk Pharmacy’s Pat and Maria discuss the management of several common eye conditions that people struggle with.

Dry eyes is an extremely common complaint that we see people asking us about on a daily basis. It occurs when tear production is not sufficient to provide enough lubrication in the eyes. At best it can be merely a nuisance but in severe cases it can cause a lot of distress and discomfort. There are often aggravating factors-it’s prevalence increases with age and any activity that may cause you to strain your eyes will increase the likelihood of symptoms developing. Many people who look at computer screens all day as part of their work will experience eye discomfort for example. Dusty and polluted environments will also wreak havoc with your eyes.

Contact lens wearers will also likely encounter this problem from time to time. Luckily, there are a huge range of products available here in Mounthawk Pharmacy to address this issue. The following are some of our tried and trusted remedies that are proven to make a difference.

The Optrex range is probably the most popular and cost-effective product available to treat dry eyes.

It comes in a range of drops, an eye spray and also an eye wash. Many people struggle with the correct method of putting in eye drops so please ask us at the counter where we will happily demonstrate for you. Despite some people’s best efforts, drops are not always the most palatable of medicines to administer so this is why the eye spray can work so well. It is sprayed onto closed eyes for instant relief and is also enriched with Pro-Vitamin B5 which moisturised the skin around the eyes. The eye bath is a wonderful product and is our go to for anyone who may feel a gritty sensation inside the eye or suspects some dirt may have gotten in. It is suitable for adults and children alike and flushes out any particles that may be causing eye discomfort. This should be an essential part of your home medicine kit. One thing to bear in mind about eye drops is that many of them contain a preservative that lasts for 28 days after first opening. After this time the drops should be discarded as they will begin to harbour bacteria and this could lead to a nasty eye infection.

A good idea is to mark on the container the date of opening to avoid this.

Another extremely popular range of drops on the market is the Hylo-range and this offers a specialised treatment for most dry eye complaints that you can think of. Happily it is also designed to be compatible with contact lens use. For example the

Hylo-Care drop is designed for people who may have damage to the surface of the eye due to recent surgery and aids natural healing.

Hylo-Forte is an excellent intensive drop for people with severe cases of dry eyes and is probably the most popular of the newer range of eye drops available. Hylo-Night is a wonderful eye ointment that is administered at night and due to its thick consistency it lasts a lot longer than the other drops. An advantage of the Hylo range is they all last for 6 months after bottle opening. What many people do not realise is that the Hylo range of eye drops is covered on the Medical Card and Drug Payment scheme. So if these products are something you need on a long term basis it might save you money to ask your doctor to write them on your prescription.

Many people are experiencing itchy eyes at this time of year and often this can be attributed to hayfever. While tablets will help, many people will need eye drops to manage their symptoms. The Otrivine-Antistin Eye drop is a very popular choice for hayfever sufferers aged 12 years and over and needs to be administered up to three times daily for optimum effect. The Opticrom Allergy drops are suitable for everyone 6 years and above and are a good alternative.

Unfortunately there is often no magic bullet when it comes to which product will work best for you so a bit of trial and effort and a lot of patience is sometimes necessary. As always, if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to call into store and ask us as that is what we are there for!

Eye infections can cause a lot of discomfort and will often require a trip to your GP for antibiotic eye drops. Over the counter we sell Brolene eye drops for minor eye infections. Fun fact-many people think that the popular Dolly Parton song is called Jolene but it is actually called Brolene and she was singing about how she had an eye infection and if anyone had any Brolene handy to treat it. Lets hope somebody helped her out. If you have any concerns that you may have an eye infection, please seek medical help as eye infections can turn nasty quite quickly if left untreated.

For those with sensitive eyelids, a great product is Blephaclean wipes which are preservative free and help to clear any pollutants or particles around the eyes that may be causing discomfort. The skin around the eye is very sensitive and we need to be careful what products we put on it. The Bioderma range has some excellent creams for this very purpose. One last thing to consider is that the preservatives used in eye drops can sometimes themselves cause discomfort. For this reason some eye drops are formulated as unit dose vials and these are designed for single use. Just sometime to keep in mind.

The above is really just a snapshot of the many more products available in Mounthawk Allcare Pharmacy to treat eye complaints so pop into store where we will be delighted to go through the range with you. There is a product to suit everyone and there is no need to suffer from the discomfort of dry eyes when help is available.

20 Years of Beauty by the Beach for the Ladies of Ballybunion and Beyond

This year marks a very special milestone for Karina over in Ballybunion’s Beauty by the Beach salon. Celebrating an astonishing 20 years in business, Karina told us about her journey of getting her business to where it is today.

Karina, can you tell our readers how you got into the beauty industry?

I started in the Beauty industry very young, I was only 18 when I did a course to achieve my qualifications in Tralee. After then working in a pharmacy for a year I took the chance to travel and moved to Australia. I started working in a beauty salon over there and I really fell in love with the beauty side of the job. I stayed there for a year and came home in 2000 and really felt that there wasn’t a lot of beauty salons in the area, particularly in Ballybunion there was none at all so I spotted a niche in the market. Myself and my sister-in-law opened a salon together in July 2002, it was a small premises actually just downstairs from where we are now. We worked together for 3 years and then we parted ways in a business capacity and I took over completely then.

With 20 years in business you have come through a recession and a pandemic alongside owning a business in a predominantly tourist town, how has that been?

I have absolutely gone through it all! I remember when I first started it was busy in the Summertime and then I had to face into the Winter when things where quieter. There were hard days where I cried at my desk thinking how will this ever work; it was said to me that a beauty salon will never work in Ballybunion.

But I persevered and the turning point came in 2014/2015 when I started using social media. I got Kevin Ross of KR Communications to come in and set up the social media pages and he showed me how to use them and it took off from there!

What do you feel your salon offers that draws such a strong clientele base?

There are 6 of us here and we really do bring something different with our own niche’s. But personally, I started off doing nails when nobody was doing nails really so they would be a particular favourite of mine to do alongside

makeup and eyebrows, they would be my specialities.

As a salon, we really enjoy having Bridal parties in.

The morning of a wedding, it’s such a beautiful atmosphere, the excitement and just to be a part of that special day for someone is amazing. Particularly now even wedding guests, the excitement for them to actually be going somewhere! We constantly upskill and I always look for new and exciting treatments to bring to my clients.

With 20 years, how do you keep your salon so upbeat and positive?

I am so lucky with the staff that I have, I’ve had them for years.

They always say that it doesn’t feel like coming to work at all because it’s just such a relaxed atmosphere and we all get along so well. Even in terms of the pandemic, we really missed being in the salon with customers and each other. It had a huge knock on effect on people’s mental health so to be all back in the salon working together, its lovely.

Will you be marking your 20-year anniversary in any special way?

We are so excited to be celebrating our 20-year anniversary! We will be hosting a customer appreciation evening on the 6th of August from 6pm-8pm. Just a chance to meet up with all of our customers new and old with a glass of prosecco, a few nibbles!

Really without our customers we just wouldn’t be where we are today. Understanding Dyspraxia Q & A Q: What is Dyspraxia / Developmental Coordination (DCD)?

A: Developmental Coordination Disorder is the term used to describe difficulties in the development of movement skills. It becomes apparent in early childhood as a difficulty in learning or carrying out skills that require motor coordination. This condition affects a child’s performance of everyday tasks in the home, play and school environments. The cause of DCD is unknown. However, we know that the difficulty arises in the processing of the information between the brain and the body, which affects the child’s ability to move effectively. Studies suggest that DCD is present in 6% of children between the ages of 5 to 12 that is approximately one child in every class at primary school level. Evidence suggests that children do not “grow out” of DCD and difficulties may extend into adolescence and sometimes into adult life. Consequently, early diagnosis and intervention is important for both child & family.

Q: When and How is DCD identified?

A: Though formal identification of Dyspraxia/DCD rarely occurs prior to a child’s 5th birthday; parents & teachers may notice that a very young child has coordination difficulties or delays in motor development when compared with peers. Multiple sources of information are used when assessing a child for Dyspraxia/DCD. These will be collated from parents, teachers, and the child/young person. In addition, formal testing is often carried out by a health professional (e.g., Occupational or Physiotherapist) and confirmed by a medical practitioner. A diagnosis is made when there are significant motor difficulties that are not due to a visual impairment, neurological disorder, or other medical condition.

Q: How can DCD affect a child at home / school?

A: Your child’s movements may generally appear awkward or “clumsy”. They may have difficulties with some/all the following: · Self-Care: washing, dressing, buttons, shoelaces, zips or putting clothes on the right way around. · Physical play & sports especially in playing team games, including ball skills. · Handwriting & drawing. · Using tools e.g., a toothbrush, cutlery, scissors, ruler. · Doing crafts & playing with construction toys. · Learning new motor tasks. · General organisation/planning difficulties relating to themselves & their belongings e.g., losing clothing & books.

· Social difficulties e.g., difficulty in groups especially maintaining friendships. · Emotional difficulties e.g., low self-esteem.

Q: What can I do to help my child?

A: There is much that you can do to help your child at home.

For your child to succeed, you will need to support his/ her learning & encourage him/her to participate in activities. · Make adjustments at home to encourage greater independence & participation (e.g., elasticated shoes, trousers, easier fastenings on clothes, strategies for organisation & time management). · Provide opportunities for regular practice of activities & exercises by involving your child in everyday activities such as cooking (mixing, spreading), household chores (folding clothes, putting away cutlery, mopping the floor) & simple games (catching a ball, hopscotch) · As your child practices & improves, gradually increase the demands of the task e.g., catching a smaller ball, cutting around more complex shapes. · Let your child choose activities that they particularly enjoy or wish to try. · Praise your child for effort, as well as achievement. Celebrate successes & attribute them to your child’s hard work & effort. · Try to make sure your child practices meaningful, ‘functional’ tasks that he/she will come across in everyday life e.g., decorating biscuits with icing rather than meaningless finger exercises. · Use your child’s interests as a focus for motivation e.g., cutting out newspaper pictures of their favourite sport. · Encourage practice at every opportunity. ‘Little & often’ is best for learning – ten minutes every day rather than one long session each week.

Back to School Blues Easing your child’s fears and anxieties around educational changes

By Cathriona Murphy As the summer comes to a close, the realisation of lazy mornings in bed, late evenings playing with friends outside all coming to an end will start to hit home with our children. This can bring on a whole range of emotions and difficulties. For some, it will be a highly anticipated time to reconnect with friends and all the social activities that come with the school calendar, but for others it is a different reality.

Students often complete homework but the concept of “study” in addition to homework is completely new. Every one of them will feel nervous initially and are all in the same position irrespective of how confident they may manage to appear!”

From first day in Junior Infants to making that milestone transition from Primary to Secondary, each change is as big as the next. As parents, it can be a worrying time while we struggle to figure out the best way to help our child navigate through this period of transition.

With that in mind, I recently spoke with some of Ireland’s leading experts to get some insight and tips on the topic.

Edel Lawlor is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s leading child psychotherapists and play therapy specialists. Edel founded Expressive Play which is a child and adolescent therapy centre and together with over 20 years of experience in addition to her MA in Psychotherapy and Play therapy, Edel has proved how invaluable her knowledge and service is. When I asked Edel what her advice would be she told me “Some children can be very excited around starting primary school, but for some they can become very anxious. I would say to parents to avoid saying things such as “I will be heartbroken, I will be crying when they are going in the gates”. Just to be mindful of conversations in front of them because they pick up on emotions. I would recommend driving past the school a couple of times before they start, talk about it, mention the teacher by name, show them pictures of the school using google etc. Play “school” games during the summer holidays, incorporating lining up, talk about friends, practice within the game school drop off/ collection so that the child is aware of what is happening. Involve them in the build up by letting them choose items such as pencil case, lunch box etc. I like to talk to them about being nervecited, its normal to be excited but still a little nervous. But really to keep in mind that junior infants still incorporates a lot of play which is wonderful to see, it will help children relax into their environment.”

Mary Lucey is highly regarded as an Education and Career Consultant. Mary has worked in Education, Training and Career Management for many years in both third level, further education and apprenticeships.

I recently asked Mary her views on the topic, she told me “While starting secondary is an exciting new adventure – many students are terrified at the prospective. I believe in normalising the transition over the summer. Discuss concerns openly and honestly, do not over-emphasise the impending change as this will only cause stress. Sort out practicalities – location of classrooms, canteen, gym, toilets, lockers, location of the bus home, location of the car outside, etc. These facts can play on a student’s mind but can all be well-established in advance of the first day. Be organised with correct uniform, sports gear, books, etc so that the student will not appear any different to the students. Aim to be-friend just one or two people

Michelle Corr is one of Badminton World Federations highly regarded coaches.

Establishing the Tralee juvenile club whilst also being a prominent member of the Munster coaching team, Michelle told me “I believe introducing kids to sports from a young age promotes social, emotional and developmental skills. Badminton, for example, is a fun activity where children can be part of a team, giving them a sense of achievement whilst learning good sporting behaviour. It encourages a sense of wellbeing and belonging which will nurture their self-esteem and self-confidence. All of these can contribute to easing anxiety and developing good social skills which will follow through to teens and adult life” With such a range of expertise, we hope you can take something from this to help you and your family in the coming school year.

A White Bright Healthy Smile

by Dr Roisin Boyle The best way to ensure a bright and healthy smile this summer is to ensure that your brushing technique is effective. When we brush all the surfaces of the teeth well the gums will have a pink and healthy appearance and the teeth will be stain free.

If we miss plaque, particularly at the gum line or between the teeth the gums become inflamed and red and bleed easily.

The teeth can also become stained, and decay can start. It is important to brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste.

A few simple steps we can use to improve our brushing technique is to look in the mirror when brushing to see that the toothbrush is getting right up to the gum line. Also, consider using an oscillating rotating electric toothbrush. Always use either floss or interdental brushes daily. Attend your dentist regularly for exam and hygiene visits.

Have a chat to your dentist to see if you are suitable for tooth whitening, which is a safe and effective way to whiten teeth further.

& SHED IT’S ALL HAPPENING AT THE NEW PHOENIX WOMEN’S SHED The Phoenix Women’s SHED has now held three events and an Official launch. We are delighted to say that the word is spreading and support for the SHED is growing rapidly.

We had a fun session of Drumming with Drum Dance Ireland; we have held a public meeting attended by 40 women to ask women in Kerry what they would like to do in the SHED. We have had a TAI CHI and Tea Party morning attended by 50 women.

We also held our official launch at the Meadowlands Hotel, where we enjoyed a fabulous summer buffet, music and dancing.

Our next event is Chakra Dancing with Elaine Clancy.

The SHED events will take place every Thursday 10.30a.m. – 1.30p.m. Pipers Band Hall, Matt Talbot Road.

Forthcoming SHED events will include a Multi Cultural Cooking Demonstration with Sonali Ralliaram, Origami, Yoga, Upcycling Furniture, Fashion Show hosted by PACO, Tralee Our walking group meets on a Wednesday morning, 11.00a.m. at Wetlands; no need to book, just show up. A casual ‘Walk and Talk’ followed by coffee.
