Hello and welcome to Connect Business. We are delighted to bring you Connect Business, our aim is to serve the businesses of Kerry with a magazine they can feature their good business news stories in, we will feature all that’s happening in the business community. It will be published 4 times a year. This month we meet David Moran who has just joined Casey and Co Accountants. David will be giving advice each issue on keeping your accounts in order so feel free to email any questions you may have on this. We also visit Antoinette Butler in Listowel where she has expanded the education business, it’s great to see good news stories happening in the business world. Speaking of good news we took ourselves along to HQ in Abbey street Tralee where Ken and Tom have created a wonderful work space for those starting out in business but can’t afford all the overheads involved with a big office, this is a super idea and one to be watched for expansion. It’s our first issue so as with everything new it’s impossible to get to everyone, so we invite you to contribute to us with your business news. We would be delighted to chat with you. David Moran Joins New Kerry Team Connect Business took a trip to Casey and Co accountants based in Day Place Tralee where David Moran has recently joined the team there. Popular for his mid-field place on the football field for his county we catch up and ask him why the move back to Kerry and also a few tips on keeping the books right in business. David you have just returned from Cork to live and work in Kerry, why the move? I was always keen on moving back to Kerry and to build a career here. I probably moved home sooner than I thought but that was down to the exciting opportunity to join Casey & Co. I spent four great years in the Transaction Advisory Services Department of EY where I received great training and experience in the corporate restructuring and the transactions world. I was also fortunate to be involved in the Entrepreneur of the Year program which I found fascinating, seeing people putting their lives and dreams into an idea and seeing it flourish into a successful enterprise. From a football and training perspective I hope it will make life a bit easier logistically. I won’t miss the road between Ballyvourney and Macroom at 6pm! Moving to Casey & Co was always going to be very different to the world of the ‘big four’ but what was very attractive is the ambition the staff have for the firm. I can honestly say I am delighted with my move. You are now based in Casey and Co accountants tell us a little about the business? Casey & Co has been serving the South West since 1981. Over the past number of years the firm has grown to meet the diversifying needs of our customers. The firm is a four Partner practice and a very strong team of Accountants and support staff. Starting a new business can be daunting enough without the headache of keeping the books in order, have you any advice for our readers? The most important thing when starting your own business from a financial perspective is being organised and maintaining up to date records. It’s very difficult at the end of an accounting period to go back over the year’s transactions. The fundamentals to starting up your own business from an accounting perspective include: • Complete all chequebook stubs; • Keep all Visa/Bank statements; • Keep all invoices in date order, clearly marking those paid by cash; and • Maintain a simple cashbook which records all receipts for easy reconciliation with sales and lodgements. This can be done initially on Excel and through an accounting package as the business grows. This will save new business owners a lot of time and money at the end of the financial year or most likely in the run up to a tax deadline!

The “Small Wins” campaign combines modern day technology with the vast experience and knowledge of the Nisus Personal Trainers. The campaign encouraged a diverse body of staff to improve and promote a healthier lifestyle. Online coaching enabled us to offer Small Wins to a broader geographical audience thereby including more staff. Online effort level challenges and leader boards added a fun element while also maintaining a focus on the desired outcome. Since all was published online you didn’t have to be meeting with someone to compete with them. Comparing effort rather than fitness provided motivation and this helped/encouraged everyone to make a better effort.

It’s close to end of year for many sole traders and it’s time to organise returns ,what’s the number one tip you would give in relation to this? From an Accountant’s point of view you cannot receive financial records early enough. If sole traders have items/ accountants queries outstanding or have yet to drop financial records to their accountant I would encourage people to act as a matter of urgency. This will avoid any interest and penalties being charged by Revenue on late filings. For those who have presented financial records to their accountants make sure all available tax credits and allowances are claimed eg medical receipts, tuition fees etc. Make sure your accountant is up to date with all personal circumstances that may qualify for tax credits. Your passion for sport and your place in Club and County football has been prominent over the years is this something that you hope to continue for a few years to come? I hope so. Unfortunately I’m in the second half of my sporting career and I get a fright when I see the date of births of some of the new guys coming into the panel! I love being involved in a team environment, both in work and in sport. I spent the most part of two and a half years out of football with two cruciate and a torn retina in my eye and I found this period particularly difficult.

I missed the camaraderie and sense of collectiveness that goes with being involved in a team. Nothing lasts forever but as long as I’m enjoying it and can add value to a team I’ll stay involved. Work and football are obviously hectic for you, what is chill time for David? In reality I’m a sports fanatic! I love watching other spots particularly Rugby, Soccer and Racing. During the season I can’t be as active as I would like as I’m trying to recover from a game/training or preparing for the next session. This means a good bit of TV time at weekends! Now that football is finished for the year I have tried to get out golfing a few times which I enjoy (depending on how I’m playing and the weather!!). I’ve also had a chance to go to the Listowel races and catch up with friends I went to University with that I don’t get to see during the season.

Call for nominations for the Lee Strand/Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2016! The official launch of the Lee Strand/ Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2016 was held this week at Lee Strand, in Tralee. Since 1998 the awards have acknowledged the achievements of young people from Kerry between the ages of 14 years and 19 years. The winners will be announced at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel, Tralee on Friday, January 27th, 2016. Awards will be presented for the Overall Winner, Certificates of Distinction, Certificates of Merit, a Voluntary Group Award and the Hall of Fame Award. Speaking at the launch Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan stated “An Garda Síochána are delighted to be associated with the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards. We often underestimate the worth of our youth who are both innovative and important to our future. It is important to recognise their excellence in the area of sports, arts, culture, charities or caring for a relative or friend.” John O’Sullivan, General Manager, Lee Strand stated “Lee Strand has a strong commitment to supporting initiatives within the local community and we are delighted once again to support the Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards. The awards provide a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the young people of Kerry, who have made a positive impact within their local community. This year we are also calling for nominations for the Hall of Fame Award. This award will recognise the community service of individuals of all ages who have made a positive impact working with Kerry’s youth over the years.” The closing date for receipt of nominations is Monday, December 5th, 2016. Any member of the public can nominate a young person whom they feel has made a contribution to their local area. Nominations are available from any Garda Station in Kerry; K.D.Y.S. According to co-founder Tom O Leary “The idea to set up a Co-working space came out of a conversation Ken and I had around November last year. Both of us were working with start-ups and small businesses for years and we were looking at what types of supports small businesses need. Most of our clients were either working from home or unsuitable premises and we knew that this was an issue for them in developing their business. We were both familiar with the concept of co-working spaces and had looked at successful spaces in Ireland and abroad. At that point we started researching suitable premises to lease and develop. HQ Tralee is the first location we have developed. It is located on Abbey Street and occupies 3 floors over the Abbey Inn and House Café. The space is a mix of office suites and hot desk co-working space. The hot desk space is a flexible space that can be rented on a daily, weekly or monthly basis. Other facilities on site include a coffee dock with free tea and coffee, and a training/meeting room 10

According to Ken “the business model we have developed can be replicated elsewhere. If there is any auctioneer, building owner or developer with property sitting idle in towns around the Country we can work with them on developing a HQ Co-working space in their property. Our main aim is to provide local start-ups and small businesses with office space equivalent to what they would get in large cities. Photographer Produces Book Of Memories Top Kerry Photographer John Cleary has a keen eye for catching the moment, and this is certainly visible in his most recent creation. ‘THROUGH THE LENS ‘ is the first production in what we hope will be a series, which John will bring us all through a journey back in time to the 1970’s when he covered nearly every event that happened in the county, there was never any escaping John, always armed with the camera photos were taken and memories recorded amongst families and sporting teams, schools and clubs, and we are delighted that John has now decided it’s time to produce a collection of these in his new book, John opened his first shop in April 1967 and three years later joined forces with his business partner which resulted in extra staff and more employment for the town. He is an established press photographer and the Cleary name has been linked to wedding photography for over 50 years with John capturing over 2000 happy couples in that time, his son Martin now carries on that tradition. They offer individual attention from first contact, through your stay and even when you return home. Ireland becomes a second home to many as the saying goes “Forever Irish”. Many students have returned for various programs bringing family and friends along the way, and so the success continues with expansion in the horizon. Antoinette would you give us a bit of background on Irish Host Family and how the Butler Education Centre came to being? Irish host family.ie developed from the desire to give European students individual programs in our area, through a variety of programs while boosting employment and tourism in our town. The demand increased through students marketing the programs in their own towns after their own successful stay. Why did you choose Listowel? We were looking for a building with character and history, we spent over 1 year looking for a suitable building and site in Castleisland, all avenues were exhausted, so we went looking a bit further. Irish host family.ie has spread the students all over Kerry from Tarbert to Rathmore which gave us scope to look outside of Castleisland for a suitable building. It was brought to our attention that the National bank was for sale, and on viewing the premises it was clear that it had the wow factor. Does this expansion mean more jobs being provided in the county? Irish host family.ie is now developing the Butler Centre which will have many aspects, Education and Business. The building is at present been set up not only for meeting/interview rooms and Conference possibilities, but as an Educational facility to send Irish students abroad for TY year, Summer stays, or short periods of time to perfect their language skills which will in turn benefit the student when it comes to school & state exams. By having this facility we can increase our employment level in the Kerry region again. Any advice to someone starting out in business or thinking of expanding in the current times? For any person starting off a business it’s important to seek advice and tick boxes to ensure that the idea is clear and that you get a professional team for advice behind you. Local enterprise office is a great facility which not only provides mentors, grants but a link to people that you may need advice from. 16

I was recently accepted into the Acorns program which is an absolute honour, as only 57 ladies from all over Ireland were chosen to particiate. This will help me focus on our target market. What do the next 12 months hold for Antoinette? Promoting Irish host family.ie and the Butler Center will be my focus now in relation to business development and how this can increase tourism and employment in each area.

Tralee Hosts National Circus Festival JUST when you got your eyeballs back in their sockets we are back! The 15th annual National Circus Festival of Ireland will get underway in Tralee from Thursday 10th to Sunday 13th November 2016. At the heart of the festival is Circus Siamsa, a cutting edge contemporary circus show, held at 2pm and 5.30pm on Saturday 12th November in Siamsa Tíre Theatre where top acts from the UK, Italy, America, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Israel and France will enthral audiences of all ages. There is a four day circus convention happening at Moyderwell Hall, KDYS Hall and Tralee Gymnastics Hall where participants enjoy a full circus, acrobatics and aerial master class programme. On Friday 11th the Grand Hotel Denny St. will play host to Circus Sideshow, a bespoke festival club full of pop-up performances and amazing music from gyp-hop originators The Latchikos. Circus Sideshow also features 5 x 5, a new initiative supporting upcoming Irish circus. Saturday night is the Renegade Stage; a totally unique evening of absolutely no-holds-barred-anything-goes circus, the open mic of circus. Children will get an opportunity to run away with the circus, for at least one day, at the Children’s Circus Workshops in The Grand Hotel on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th November, 11am and 12 noon both days. O’Leary’s Family Butchers win gold at Blas na hÉireann O’Leary’s Family Butchers in Millstreet, Co. Cork, have won gold at the prestigious Blas na hÉireann Irish Food Awards recently announced at the Dingle Food Festival. Owners Jerry and James O’Leary scooped top place in the ‘Other Meat’ category in Dingle, for their Mushera Venison Burgers. Speaking about winning gold, Jerry O’Leary of O’Leary’s Family Butchers said: “We are delighted to have won this coveted award. It really shows the hard work and dedication of our team at O’Leary’s Family Butchers. In 2014, the north Cork butchers won gold at the Blas na hÉireann awards with their Easy Carved Gourmet Chicken and were silver medal winners for their Homemade Spiced Beef. Jerry and James O’Leary have also been awarded “National Champions” for the best Traditional Sausage in 2009, and the title of ‘National Champion Spiced Beef’ in 2010 by the Irish Food Writers’ Guild. Radio Kerry is the 2016 PPI Local Radio Station of the Year Radio Kerry was named as the 2016 PPI Local Radio Station of the Year at the annual PPI National Radio Awards Ceremony at the Lyrath Estate in Kilkenny recently. It is the fifth time that the station has received the accolade, which is awarded by a panel of peers, in the past 11 years.

The PPI judges’ citation which accompanied the announcement of Local Station of the Year reads …. “Radio Kerry: Compelling Radio that pulls you to the place its coming from. Organic in its connection with the community. On the point in terms of what local radio should be”.

In a year where the Kerry Minor Football Teams brought a third All Ireland Championship title back to Kerry this award for Radio Kerry brings further All Ireland glory to the Kingdom. The Station was also successful in three further categories winning Silver in the Innovation Category for the Just Once series developed by the students of KerryETB/ Radio Kerry Training under the stewardship of Shane O Connor. The Just Once series also took Bronze in the Short Feature category. The third award was for Weeshie Fogarty who won Bronze in the Sports Broadcaster of the Year category. Radio Kerry General Manager, Fiona Stack, said that she is extremely proud that the station has been awarded PPI Local Station of the Year for a fifth time, a record unrivalled by any other station. This year is the 16th year of the PPI National Radio Awards. Radio Kerry has received 94 PPI Radio Awards nominations and won 48 awards - 15 gold, 13 silver and 20 bronze – in that time. The serial entrepreneur plans to launch three franchises a year, up to a total of 20+ across the North and South.

I still can’t believe that little ol’ me has been selected in an awards ceremony of this calibre, and my main worry right now is what to wear! Your website is written by a teen (you) for teens and the parents of teens. What inspired you? I started teentimes.eu to talk honestly about issues that I believe interest the teenagers of today. I have a ‘no filter’ policy on what I can discuss - and although a lot of the posts are about what inspires and makes me happy - such

31st October sees the deadline for income tax returns and is a timely reminder to ensure you are claiming all available tax credits. Below are two tax credits that can be claimed at the standard rate. Medical Expenses

Relief can be claimed for expenditure incurred on medical care or non-routine dental treatment for yourself or any person you claim tax allowances for.
