EDITOR NOTE Hello and welcome to Connect Business ... This issue is especially produced to honour and celebrate our Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards. Now in its third year, it’s wonderful to see the different ladies in business each year, so refreshing to see so many new businesses beginning each year also. We should be very proud of the strong business community we have and the strong network of women that we have spread all over the county. We would like to thank all who made this possible, our sponsors who have returned from last year and indeed the new sponsors who have joined us this year, all of whom are introduced to you here in this issue. We would ask you to take the time to recognise these businesses and support them when you have an opportunity to, as they have supported this event and in turn you and your business. Cora Creed who is Vice President with Universal Music Group, talks to us about her amazing career and tells us she will always be proud of her Kerry roots ....
Cora, can you give us a little background about your Kerry roots I was born in Listowel Hospital, and grew up in Lyreacrompane. My mother is originally from Rathea and my father is from Inchicore in Dublin. We lived in Lyre until I was about 17 before moving to Bedford in Listowel. I have 4 siblings, 2 brothers and 2 sisters all of whom now live overseas. I went to secondary school in Listowel, starting with the Presentation Convent but switched over to the Vocational School after Inter Cert as I really wanted to study Wood Working and Technical Drawing for my Leaving Certificate.
After returning from our honeymoon, I took all the paperwork that Thomas had submitted to the embassy, and completed it with my details, then we sent them a letter along with our marriage certificate stating that we were married and wondered how would that change his application status. That was in August, we heard nothing until early March the following year when we both received letters from the American Embassy inviting us to Dublin to interview for Green Cards. We were thrilled, we got our green cards and had 120 days in which to activate them or they would go to the next in line. Thomas moved to New York in May right before our first wedding anniversary and I joined him a month later. The rest is history!
How did you find You are Vice President with Universal yourself in the US? Music group; tell us a bit about your role After finishing my and the daily job.
Leaving Cert, I worked in the Listowel Hospital for the summer while trying to get into Fás to get an apprenticeship in the construction industry, preferably carpentry. I was ahead of my time though, and unfortunately, the industry wasn’t ready to accept women – I was gutted. I got a temporary job in the accounts department at Kerry Ingredients to fill in for someone who was on maternity leave, that’s when my husband and I starting dating (he was also working there). Thomas is from Beale, but had the travel bug and really wanted to go to New York as a lot of his friends were there already. I wasn’t quite ready to go that far away from home. Two of my siblings had already moved to London, so I decided to join them. I got a job working for Lloyds of London and gained an interest in computing and began designing and building tools to help simplify existing manual tasks. Thomas moved to London and we eventually got engaged. A couple of months before our wedding while we were at home in Beale finalizing arrangements, Thomas got a letter from the American Embassy in Dublin saying that his application for a Donnelly visa had been accepted. The letter included lots of paperwork for him to complete and return to them. We got married in June of 1990 and went to the US on our honeymoon for a few weeks, and I fell in love with it. 4 | Connect BUSINESS | June 2017
I’ve worked in the Music industry for almost 20 years now, on the digital distribution side. People look at me with a little sideways glance when I say that, as it’s not very clear what that is. Basically think about the music that you steam on Spotify or download from iTunes – we get to put that there. When I started, the industry was totally against making the music available online, especially as Napster was making peer-to-peer sharing so easy. They were afraid that they would be enabling pirating of their content. It’s hard to believe that we started working on

digital almost 20 years ago, it still seems new. But iTunes actually launched in 2002 and there were other initiatives before that. At the time no one knew what an impact this would have on the industry. iTunes was created to help market Apple’s iPod, more as a marketing tool – now they have significant market share of the digital music download business which is now bigger than the physical music business. Surprisingly, the industry is still evolving and I get to lead large transformational projects to support that evolution, both process and system. Every day is different and I really do enjoy the challenge.
The Irish are loved everywhere they go. Do you find being Irish in the states is a big thing? Despite being one of the smallest nations on earth, the Irish have left an indelible mark on the world. Irish music, dance, literature, sport, and other aspects of the culture have propagated to the four corners of the world, and nowhere more than in the US. Having lived outside of Ireland more now than I have in Ireland, I am always struck by the incredible goodwill towards the Irish. Doors have been opened for me and countless others because of our great heritage.
Do you get home to Ireland very often? I get home at least once a year, but in the past few years, I find myself coming home more and more often. I’ve been in Ireland twice this year so far, and have plans for another trip.
Do you think you will ever return home for good? I’m definitely open to it, if the right opportunity presented itself. Even though I’ve lived in NY for 26 years now, Ireland is still home and has a special place in my heart.
What does Cora do to unwind? I’m one of the founding members of Swazi Legacy – a charity that was set up to honor the memory and lifelong work of Father Pat Ahern. Father Pat, originally from Ballylongford, was ordained in 1960 and set out for Swaziland on his first mission in 1962. He immediately felt a connection and knew that he could help the children there. He only left Swaziland to come home to visit family 6 | Connect BUSINESS | June 2017
and friends and while there would raise money for the children of Swaziland. Father Pat passed away in 2009 and is buried in his second home, Swaziland. When Father Pat passed away, members of his family travelled to Swaziland for his funeral. It was during this visit that they realized the full impact of his life-long work and how important it was to the people there. The children of Swaziland depended on him so much that we could not turn our backs on his important work and vowed to continue his legacy. We held our first fundraiser on the anniversary of his death in 2010 and it is now an annual event. Since that first fund raiser we have raised over $600,000 to help home and educate hundreds of orphaned and marginalized children in Swaziland. We have taken two trips down to Swaziland to visit the homes and the children, taking secondary school children from both the US and Ireland with us. More information can be found at www.swazilegacy.org. Thomas and I love to travel, so when we get the opportunity to explore new countries or cities we do. We don’t get a lot of holidays in the US but we make good use of them when we do. I also like to play golf, I’m not very good at it but it is the one place I can completely shut down for 4+ hours. Dinner with friends is always on the agenda as well.

TRALEE CHAMBER recognising people making an impact Breeda Hurley, Billy Nolan and Dan Horan, three outstanding business people who have shown extraordinary commitment to their customers and the town of Tralee, have won Tralee Business People Awards for January, February and March 2017. The new monthly award from Tralee Chamber Alliance recognises people who have made a positive impact to Tralee through their business and working lives. The President of Tralee Chamber Alliance, John Drummey, said: “Breeda, Billy and Dan employ over 200 people between them and deserve to be recognised for the work they do to improve and enhance life the lives of those around them every day. We are delighted to shine a light on them for contributing to the economic and community development of the town over the course of their careers.” Breeda Hurley, a Tralee-native, is the Managing Director of the multi award-winning family-run ABC Cleaning. She is a business woman, author, wife and mother of eight children. Breeda has worked tirelessly throughout her life to support her family and create employment for hundreds of people in the locality. Over 20 years ago and after a number of personal and business struggles, Breeda set up ABC Cleaning which now employs over 140 people, many of whom are in Tralee.

In 1993, Billy took over Hilsers Jewellers on Castle Street and along with his wife Margaret and two daughters Ciara and Louise, they have forged a brand name which is well known in the locality and beyond. Billy has always had a great interest in local affairs. He’s responsible for the establishment of the Tralee Tourist Kiosk during the summer months and he’s involved in the Model Railway Exhibition at Blennerville Windmill. Dan Horan opened his first store in Abbey Court in 1988 with a fruit & veg store – he now has 21 stores employing 81 people across Munster in Kerry, Cork, Limerick and Tipperary. Dan is an extremely genuine caring person. All of his staff hold him in the highest regard and they we feel that he deserves this award after all his years of hard work and dedication. Dan takes great pride in all of his stores and in serving the community giving both employment as well as a great service to all of his customers. He values each and every one of his customers as well as supporting local suppliers. The secret of Dan’s success can be attributed to taking care of both his customers and staff. Dan also supports numerous sporting and charity organisations including Kerry GAA, John Mitchels GAA and Tralee Soup Kitchen to name a few.

ABC has supported the local community in many ways without making a big deal about it. It has volunteered its services to charities and people who were affected by flooding and fire damage over the years. Breeda is always giving her time and knowledge to help other young business people in the town and is a very active networker and supporter of town initiatives. On May 12th next Breeda will launch her first book entitled ‘Survive and Thrive’ at the Rose Hotel, Tralee. Billy Nolan, began his business more than 51 years ago in Tralee, starting out to provide quality service and products to his customers in 1966. Since then his family and staff have built up a reputation among his customers for providing quality goods and a superb customer service. The proceeds from the sale of the calendar will be donated to Tralee charities.

Meet the Judges Shane Finn is a 24 year old
entrepreneur & endurance athlete from Dingle Town. Shane is the Co-Owner of WK Fitness Training, founded in 2013, it quickly grew from strength to strength and WK Fitness is set to make expansions both nationally & internationally over the next 10 months! Shane is an avid endurance athlete, having completed numerous Ironman Triathlons, running 12 Marathons in 12 Days and in the Summer of 2017 24 Marathons in 24 Days around Ireland. With the aim of raising €100,000 for Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus Ireland. In his spare time Shane spends time speaking & travelling to speak to young people, at schools and organizations around Ireland.
John Canty, Accountant, john
is a native of North Kerry and boasts over 13 years extensive accountancy, audit and taxation experience. Before returning to his home county, John worked successfully in Large, Medium and Small accountancy firms nationally including Russell Brennan Keane(top 10 firm)- Athlone, Devaney & Durkin- Dublin and Ernst & Young Dublin. He has enjoyed working with business of all sizes from small start-up to some of Ireland’s largest multinational companies in Ireland and is passionate about business development and client service relations. John added to his accountancy experience in 2007 when he became a Registered Tax Consultant, which provides clients with technical tax expertise advice. The Art of asking the Right Questions There are lots of reasons you might ask a question in the employment context – for example, to help unstick employees, to signpost our team, to mentor and coach, to gather information …the list goes on. But, before you ask a question of an employee, you need to ask yourself a few questions to ensure you are on the right track. First, ask yourself whether you are the right person to ask this question to get the desired information or result. If you are not, then pass the baton to the person who is. Second, it is really important to ask the right question. If you ask the wrong question, you risk getting the wrong answer or perhaps you will find that you do not have enough information to proactively progress to the next step, whatever that might be. TEN STEPS TO COPING WITH REDUNDANCY 1. Take Time: Don’t rush into making a hasty decision. If you’ve been working for a long time, this might be the ideal opportunity to take a couple of weeks to chill out and unwind. Set yourself a deadline to come back refreshed and give yourself the right amount of time to research your options. 2. Research: Research new roles, areas and sectors. Seek advice and find out more from others already working in the sector. This is particularly important if you are thinking of changing career. Try interim management roles or a contract role to first get experience in a new sector. 3. Set Career Goals: Ask yourself where would you like to work and who are the people I need to contact? What does success look like to you? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Know what they are and improve on both. Stay committed – continually take steps to move towards your goal. Ask yourself, do I have an up-to-date CV? Do I need to update my LinkedIn profile? If there are gaps in my CV, are there any courses I should consider doing to help me attain that career? 4. Stay Structured: If you’ve come from the banking world, you’ve come from a very structured organised environment where you went into work at a certain time every day and your duties and tasks were laid out for you. Sometimes people really struggle when that structure is taken away. Try and maintain a structure. Use the mornings to try and do any administrative things, such as research, CV updates. Try and start at 9am. Be strict on yourself. Remember you’re not out of work. You’re in a job to get a job. 5. Revamp CV: Do a personal review of your career to date. What key roles, skills and expertise have you developed? What achievements did you have? Revamp your CV, LinkedIn and online profiles to reflect these skills and results delivered. Think about what motivates you? What are your areas of interest? Play to your strengths. It will give you more job satisfaction in your next role. 6. Remember your transferable skills: When doing your CV, sit with a blank piece of paper and write down all the things that you’ve done over the years.
From that, pull out skills that you might have forgotten that you have. Look at those skills and think what areas can I apply those in. Most of us have skills, like good with people, attention to detail, working in a team, etc. that we take for granted. They can be applied in lots of different industries. Sometimes you may think you’re very pigeon-holed when you’ve worked in an industry for so long but try and get out of that mindset. You bring a huge amount of experience and a huge amount of transferable skills. 7. Network: Use your current network of contacts and try to broaden it. Establish new links, meet someone for lunch or coffee, join a group, club or society. Reach out and let people know that you are looking for work. Be bold and be brave. Contact people through LinkedIn. 8. Apply: If there is an organisation you would really like to work for; send them your CV and cover letter, even if they haven’t advertised a job vacancy. Remember somebody, somewhere may be handing in their notice today and you may be the answer to that employer’s prayers. 9. Ask others for advice: Ask family, friends, former colleagues what they see as your main strengths. If you were to change careers, what else do they think you would be good at? Don’t be afraid to ask them for advice. 10. Stay Positive: It is really important to stay motivated and focused on the prize. Remember your task now is to find another job. Don’t let the demons take control. Stay positive – it may take time.
