Miriam O’Callaghan
Kerrywoman by Heart By Marisa Reidy
SHE’s probably one of the best known female faces on RTE - from hosting her own summertime Saturday Night show to spearheading the station’s flagship current affairs programme, Prime Time. But mother of eight, Miriam O’Callaghan, appears to take her hectic lifestyle in her stride, telling Connect that she never really gets stressed. It’s just not worth it! Speaking to us ahead of her visit to this year’s Women in Media event in Ballybunion at the end of April, the glamorous TV and radio star said she’s really just like every other working mum – proving her point to perfection as she made lunch for her youngest child (11) during the Easter holidays as we chatted. “I often get asked how I juggle such a big family and such a busy career and, to be honest, the question doesn’t bother me because, although there are some exceptional men out there, more women than not carry a lot of that stuff and take responsibility for much more. That’s just the way it is,” Miriam said. And like most working mums, Miriam also relies heavily on her loyal childminder Lorraine, who she says has been her ‘right hand woman’ for the past 21 years “I’ve been blessed to have the same lady with me for 21 years and I often joke to my husband Steve that it would be a tough decision to choose who I’d lose first if I was forced to pick between them,” she laughed. Although born and reared in Dublin, Miriam, of course, is extremely proud of her Kerry roots – her dad Jerry grew up on the family farm at O’Callaghan’s Cross in Currow, which is still farmed by her cousin. Although her dad, like so many others, moved to Dublin to take up a job in the civil service, Miriam has always made sure she returns to Kerry as often as she can. “The only holiday I ever knew growing up was going down to the farm in Kerry and it was wonderful,” Miriam said. “I still go down as often as I can. In fact I was there two weeks ago to visit my cousin. I have loads of relatives in the area so I really try and get down as often as I can.” While in the Kingdom, 4 | Connect Kerry | May 2017
Miriam also likes to treat herself to a stay at Dingle’s Skellig Hotel – something she and her entire family have been doing since her children were young. “There’s just something so special about that place. It’s just stunning there, so I love getting a chance to relax and unwind there as often as I can.” When speaking to Connect, Miriam was preparing for her now annual trip to the Women in Media event in Ballybunion – an occasion she says she relishes. “The first year I was invited because I was receiving an award, but ever since then I’ve loved supporting the event because it’s a wonderful showcase for women in media and it’s a great way to promote the industry, especially for young students coming through, “ Miriam said. “It’s just one of those events you have to see and believe to understand just how important it is.” Joining Miriam in Ballybunion, among others, was her Prime Time colleague Katie Hannon – another Kerry woman for whom Miriam has a huge amount of respect. “She’s a fabulous Duagh woman who has had a really great year so we’ll be doing a session together at the festival. Katie and I share a tiny office at Prime Time and we call it the ‘Kerry Women’s Office.” When not taking to the airwaves on RTE Radio One on Sunday mornings, or anchoring Prime Time during the week, Miriam also hosts her own Saturday night chat show on RTE television during the summer. But while she loves the temporary change from the more serious side of Prime Time to the lighter chat show

“I’d love to chat to my precious late sister Anne who died of cancer at the age of just 33. She left behind a baby and a four-year-old (they’re now in their 20s), so if I had a choice it would be her I’d love to talk to. Just for a few minutes, to tell her how everything is going and how the kids are,” she said. Just looking at Miriam O’Callaghan, it’s clear that she takes very good care of herself, but she insists she is neither a health nor fitness freak. While she has returned to the gym of late, she says life is too short to obsess.
format, current affairs is definitely what gets her adrenalin going. “I love the chat show, and it’s the longest running summer filler chat show in RTE history, which I’m very proud of, but I’ve always said I could never do it full time. I could never let go of Prime Time. It’s part of my DNA.” But with such a high profile, highly acclaimed television programme such as Prime Time comes a lot of serious and heart-wrenching stories – something which Miriam admits isn’t always easy. “I’m sure some people might think it’s a bit dull at times, but then you have those big stories and for me that is an absolute privilege. One of my biggest faults – or maybe it’s not a fault - is that I get over emotional and sometimes find it hard to rein that in and try and hold it together. But I always say I’m not a robot so just be yourself,” she explained. “Some people have commented on it and said they could see my genuine emotion when I was discussing a particular issue, so I think it’s nice that people see I am feeling exactly what they are. It makes it more real.” And far from having a list of potential famous interviewees that she would love to sit down with, Miriam says she loves hearing from the ordinary person and telling their story. “I’m the type of person who loves to interview ordinary people who’ve been through extraordinary things. Of course you have the big stars, but for me it’s all about the ordinary people and communities who may be through tough situations yet still invite you into their world and tell their stories. That’s what stands out for me.” However, if she could wave a magic wand and speak to just one person in particular, Miriam has one very, very special person in mind. 6 | Connect Kerry | May 2017
“My mother tells me I need to slow down or I’ll crash but that’s just the way I am. I live life in fast forward. But I’ve always believed that if you wake up in the morning healthy and can get out of bed then you’re blessed,” she said. “I try to never get worked up or annoyed about small things because at the end of the day, most of it doesn’t even matter in the great scheme of things. I just let it bounce off me.” So while her hectic career is likely to keep her in Dublin for many years to come, Miriam says she would love to at least invest in a property in Kerry – her little piece of Heaven. “I can’t really ever see myself retiring to Kerry, but if I was to win the Lotto I’d love to buy a little house overlooking Dingle Bay . I always say that must be what Heaven looks like.”

Connect Travels During the summer months we in Connect like to take few trips around the county to soak up the festive atmosphere that’s only too well known in Kerry, with so many festivals and events happening in the county over the coming months we check out the different towns and see what there is to offer so if you would like anything covered in your town do contact us.
Our first stop is to Listowel Located in the northern half of the County of Kerry, along the beautiful coastal N69 route is the lively market town of Listowel, situated on the banks of the River Feale. Described as the literary capital of Ireland, Listowel, and indeed North Kerry has produced an abundance of world famous writers, giving it a uniqueness not to be found in any other part of Ireland. Home to Kerry Group, one of the world’s largest food producing companies, Listowel is indeed a traditional agricultural centre; however, in recent years the town has developed with the opening of many new businesses in the fashion and beauty sector. Retail is the lifeblood of every community and just a few weeks ago local employer the Garvey group showed their commitment to Listowel town when they launched their newly renovated store, which is definitely a must visit when you are in the area, the array of fresh local produce is breath taking and tempting to any palate. If its fashion you are looking for you will be spoilt for choice, from the older established names in the town such as Chic Boutique, Coco, Dress to impress and footprints to name a few, it’s refreshing to see some new names arriving, Blossom Boutique on Market street was a really nice find for us 8 | Connect Kerry | May 2017
with some amazing looks for all tastes and budgets. Another great sector to see thriving Is the hair and beauty with two relatively new establishments just launched Sandra’s on Church street and Tracey Grimes Hair and Extensions has just launched on William Street, this is a must stop its absolutely fab. As well as retail, Listowel has an abundance of eateries and pubs to entertain you and with so many events held in one small town at the end of the country these establishments always have characters and fun filled evenings with good food and excellent entertainment to ensure your stay in Listowel is a memorable one. With one of the finest racecourses in the country Listowel’s welcomes crowds following the races three times a year, the first of those kicking off the June bank holiday weekend. This is always a great local meeting and people travel from the four corners of the county to be part of it and enjoy the craic. As we say in Connect keep it local and support local, and with so many great towns in our wonderful county you will be spoilt for choice... watch this space and see where our travels take us next month ....

Dealing with Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) What is PMS? It is simply the way your hormones change during your monthly cycle, a combination of symptoms that will usually appear a week or so before your period and linger until the first few days of your period. Type and severity of symptoms do of course vary for every woman but there is no doubt that the impact it has on a women’s day to day life is not pleasant. Each woman with PMS will have her own personal pattern of symptoms some of which may include: cramps, bloating, mood swings, breast tenderness, emotional issues, headaches and skin problems. The most effective way to identify if you are suffering from PMS is to keep a diary of any changes you notice coming up to your period, do this for 3 to 4 months, note how severe they are and how long they last as your doctor may need to rule out any other condition before confirming you have PMS. It is worth noting that approx 85% of women will admit to having suffered from PMS at some stage so you are by no means alone! A lot of women will also admit that they tolerate these symptoms every month as they are not aware of the natural remedies which may help with symptoms and allow them to go about their day effectively during this difficult time. Some of these include: AGNUS CASTUS: effective in dealing with breast tenderness, cramping, headaches and heavy painful periods. KRILL OIL FOR WOMEN: Take 2 capsules a day to help ease irritability, bloating and tiredness also beneficial for the skin. EVENING PRIMROSE OIL, MAGNESIUM, B-VITAMINS especially B6 are other products to consider. There are also some excellent homeopathic remedies which can be very effective, worth asking about!. As always food plays a major role in our hormone and overall health so be smart about your food choices when dealing with PMS, reduce your sugar, salt and caffeine intake as these can lead to bloating, mood swings and anxiousness. Look instead to STEVIA or XYLITOL in place
of sugar and try some of the delicious herbal teas available. It is important to remember that insulin sensitivity may be reduced around the time of your period so try not to give into those sugar cravings as this will only make the situation worse. Eat regularly leading up to your period to stabilise blood sugar levels. Include plenty of high fibre and protein rich food such as wholegrain cereals, seeds, nuts, root vegetables and fruits, to keep your digestive system moving and your energy levels steady. Drink plenty of water, rather than causing you to retain more fluid, additional water will stimulate your body to flush away toxins and remove excess fluid in the process. Remember that stress can have an effect on your blood sugar levels which may lead to cravings so try keep this under control. Keep a bottle of Rescue Remedy or Emergency Essence handy to help with this. Exercise helps to release feel-good chemicals known as endorphins, these can help with mood swings and keep stress levels under control and may also help keep your mind off those food cravings!! Until Next Time, Stay Healthy,
Deirdre x

Kerryman is voted ‘Irelands Favourite Designer’ All eyes were on international designer Don O Neill at the recent VIP Style Awards in Dublin, and as always Kerry’s favorite son didn’t disappoint when he took home the first ever coveted ‘Irelands Favourite Designer Award’ Always a night of glitz and glamour this year was no different and the who’s who of style, fashion and fame arrived in their glory to the industry night of the year at the Marker Hotel in Dublin. The man from Ballyheigue won the ‘Favourite Irish Designer Award’, beating off stiff competition from other national designers like Paul Costello, Simone Rocha , Helen Cody, Joanne Hynes, Helen Steele, Umit Kutluk and Emma Manley. Don, who is the Creative Director of THEIA in New York, was thrilled with the win, the partying went long into the night but Don and husband Pascal took the first mode of transport out of the city lights to come home to Ballyheigue and celebrated in style with family and friends, the sun shone brightly and a delicious barbeque and lots of bubbly was the order of the day before the stylish couple swished back to New York to be at their desks again on Monday morning, We are thrilled for Don who has always been a huge support to Connect, we wish him well and congratulate him on another wonderful award to add to the showcase.

Party Planning Guide Family occasions happen all year round and we like to celebrate them be it a birthday, christening, wedding anniversary or maybe you just want to get the whole crew together for a catch up, well we checked out a few of the many venues around the county to see what they had to offer, asked a few of the experts for some tips on planning your party and also checked out what food options to consider. We called to see Heather in Meadowlands hotel (always a great place to party.) to get some tips from her on planning your event.
Party Planning Time
Plan in advance. The events team at the Meadowlands Hotel is on hand every step of the way to guide you with your party planning.
Type of Party & Menu
Decide on what type of party you would like. Do you want a formal party, relaxed occasion or casual dinner? Meadowlands Hotel offer a choice of menus which include finger food menus, barbecues, buffets, lunch, dinner & social menus. Cocktail and Drinks receptions can also be considered at this stage.
Decide on a Suitable Venue
When deciding on where to have your party you need to take into account many factors such as how many people you need to cater for, atmosphere and entertainment. Meadowlands Hotel offers a choice of venues- A Meitheal Ballroom, Lios Beag Private Dining Room, An Móinéar Restaurant and Johnny Frank’s Bar & Lounge.
16 | Connect Kerry | May 2017
Party Budget
It is important to decide how much you are willing to spend beforehand. Look at how many people you want to invite and see what the cost is per person. If it’s too little, you might want to reconsider your guest list or your budget. Knowing the type of party will help determine the cost per person.
Invitation List
Building a guest list is a very important task. Knowing how many people are coming and who is coming will help you make other decisions. When you send out the invitations be sure to request RSVP’s so you can give final numbers to the venue and know how many to cater for.
To Do List
To keep your event planning stress free it is best to create a “to-do list”. Keep track of when you want to have each task completed and what you can do in advance. It is also a good way to see if anyone can help you with your party planning.
Getting Help
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Friends and family are usually very willing to help. Matching a task to the right person is very important.

Hi Everyone,
Beauty Corner
I hope you all had a fabulous Easter and are looking forward to the summer holidays which are quickly approaching : ) The makeup trends coming through for summer this year are simply stunning and if there’s one obvious message its to rip up the rule book and just go for it! Bold matte lips are going to be a big look this summer and Lancôme have just launched 7 stunning new shades in ‘Matte Shaker’, which is a fun, long wearing burst of colour that really lasts and lasts. In addition to this there are 3 new shades in the iconic Absolu Rouge range which are also a matte finish and will literally suit every skin tone this summer. I have been asked recently about sunscreen and whether or not it is very important, considering there is sunscreen in most foundations on the market now. The simple answer is yes, it’s absolutely important. Not everyone wears foundation every day but even so there is everything to gain from wearing a good sunscreen. UVA rays (which are always lurking around even on a cloudy day) are what leads to acceleration of ageing in the skin, and UVB rays are what causes burning. Let’s face it, nobody wants that! When choosing a sunscreen its best to avoid anything that contains parabens as these can leave the skin exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Have a chat with the pharmacist to get advice on a good option for you. I am off to the South of France for a little break this month so next month I will be looking at French beauty rituals : ) Until next month, Au Revoir xxx

Hi all I am going to concentrate this month on bags to finish outfit, when you have purchases your outfit, be sure you enhance that look with a suitable bag to match. Bags can have a dual function, one to look good and equally as important to be useful.. There is not golden rule with bags but what I tend to do is a pretty simple approach, If I am matching up for a dressy occasion and my outfit is ‘busy,’ by this I mean multi coloured, jewelled or has lots of embellishment, I just go for a plain dress bag. If the outfit is plain and simple, I tend to be more adventurous with the bag. We have just received some of our spring/summer 2017 range of bags of which I have included some photos. This might give you some ideas and a glimpse of the range and style of bags we keep in stock, Anyway remember that dressing up should be fun and an enjoyable experience, so enjoy

Summer tips for... Party Hair • Keep your hair covered with a hat during the sunny days to protect it from harmful UV rays. • Invest in a good treatment to retain the moisture in your hair, swimming can cause your hair to look dehydrated and dull “Milk_Shake” have an amazing “argan deep treatment” which eliminates frizz, seals the cuticle, preserves hair colour integrity and makes hair soft shiny and manageable • To me .... nothing screams “summer party hair” like some beachy tousled waves, weather your going to a BBQ or the bar, beach waves are the raw embodiment of summer and work on both long and short hair! Gigi Hadid is the ultimate inspo when it comes to wavy hair!
Occasion Hair The summer season is a very busy time for special occasions from weddings and races to the rose ball
Hair styles for these occasions are usually based on the type of dress you have decided to wear but given the warmer weather putting your hair up may be the best option and eliminate the possibilities of frizzing hair or making you hot and sweaty. If your dress is a certain style e.g. Vintage, boho it is nice to go for the same themed hair style to really compliment your whole look. Victory rolls and Hollywood waves are always effective glam styles for any occasion while fish tail Braids and crown Braids are on trend summery styles with a boho’ie vibe. For weddings and races it is nice to finish your look off with hats, fasinators of some hair jewels, “That’s Perfect” in Tralee has a wide range in all colours! Some recent summer make inspo done at Brush n Blush! Brush n Blush’s product of the month “Milk_Shake Argan Deep Treatment”

Sports Injuries As dentists, we often hear accounts of how teeth were lost through sporting accidents. There are a few simple steps which should be followed if an adult tooth is knocked completely out of the mouth. Firstly make sure that it is an adult tooth. Once children have lost their front baby teeth, the adult teeth soon replaces them. Then, hold the tooth by the crown (white enamel) and do not touch the root. This is to preserve the connective tissue on the root surface which is needed when reimplanting the tooth into the mouth. If there is surface dirt on the tooth wash it for 10 seconds in milk, saline or in cold running water. Then the tooth can be put back in its socket. Bite on a piece of cotton to keep the tooth in place. If it cannot be put back into its socket, then store it in milk (or between the teeth and the inside of the cheek) and go and see a dentist. Either way you will need to see a dentist as soon as possible. The longer the tooth is out of its socket, there is less chance that it can be re-implanted successfully. The tooth is usually splinted to keep it in position once it is re-implanted. As always, time is of the essence. Beir Bua agus Beannacht. Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill. Why
Losing Weight Somebody recently said to me that he didn’t want to be alive anymore. He was anxious about his job, and felt that he was inadequate at it and would be found out and fired. He was very upset that a friend of his hadn’t got back to him when he said he would, and felt that his friend must be angry with him and was rejecting him. He felt very lost and troubled, and couldn’t see a way out of his anxiety. This person had been overweight for a lot of his life. His weight had gradually crept up, and he was getting to the point where it became a big worry for him. We had done some work around this, and he started to lose weight. Indeed, he had lost almost twelve kilos over the past few months. He didn’t associate his emotional turmoil with his weight loss, but they are very closely linked. Often our weight can be part of our defence system; we armour ourselves against our feelings, and eating can become a way of preventing our feelings from overwhelming us. It can be very helpful if we understand the emotional reasons why we overeat, but it is also important to understand why losing weight, even though it feels good in the short term, can sometimes precipitate difficult emotions that cause us to put the weight back on. When that happens, it become necessary to develop different coping mechanisms for dealing with those emotions, otherwise we get the “yo-yo diet” effect.

At various times throughout our life we all experience challenges of some kind or another, be it emotional, physical, relational, parenting issues, grief or loss, financial, addiction and so on, the list is endless. A lot of the time we can cope without additional help, but sometimes we hit a” bump in the road “that threatens our sense of personal security and safety, and we can begin to feel “stuck”, overwhelmed tense or anxious. Life intrudes and we can’t seem to find the “headspace” that allows us to make the changes we need to relieve our pain and improve our situation. No one can or should “make “you go for counselling, it has to be your own personal choice. People often wonder is the situation “bad” enough to go to a counsellor? Again it is a personal decision, however If you are dealing with an issue that is impacting negatively on your ability to rest, parent, work or enjoy your free time over a sustained period of time, then I would encourage you to consider counselling. In my professional experience to date, the majority of people who have come for counselling are glad they have done so. For many, engaging with a trained

therapist who listens empathically, without judgement and in confidence is a new and welcome experience. This allows the person to explore their problems in a safe space perhaps for the very first time. In many instances they experience a subtle change in perspective around the issues they have brought to the counselling room, and it’s like a beam of light illuminating what was for them a very dark place. As the therapeutic bond grows between therapist and client, the client becomes more aware, empowered and secure in identifying what needs to change so that they can begin living rather than enduring their life. Stop enduring your life and start living it, don’t wait the time will never be just right! Rita O’ Sullivan Crean R.P.N. B.A. Counselling and Psychotherapy

Connect recommends Us ladies love to get the locks treated so when I was invited to Hairworks Monavalley Tralee I was only too willing to offer my head for trial.. They are launching the new Kadus professional colour collection from Wella, a rich and vibrant colour that gives your hair body, bounce and the ultimate shine with minimal damage to your hair. What makes it different to other colours? Well it’s the ‘Vitaflection Microspheres’ I hear you ask what this is.. I know I did.. well its basically locking in colour for a vibrant long lasting look, how does this happen.. the vitaflection microspheres are activated by mixing the formula with the developer, the rich formula contains waxes and lipids that allow applications of the microspheres into each hair fibre. They are so small they easily enter the pores of the hair shaft. They enter each hair fibre where they couple together and lock inside the hair. The waxes and lipids envelope the hair
5 Things you need to know about Eyebrow Microblading/ Embrowdery 1. This is a semi permanent treatment whereby the illusion of hairs are created using a pigment under you skin therefore, to maintain your brows long term, top ups will be necessary every 12-24 months. 2. Up to 2-3 treatments are necessary to achieve a desired result – Rome wasn’t built in a day! 3. Removing unsatisfactory work is not easy and can be costly do ensure your Microblading Specialist is fully qualified and has a background in eyebrow shaping & tinting etc. 4. Microblading is a skin treatment not a hair treatment, therefore regular maintenance of your brows will still be necessary as stray hairs will still grow! 5. You may still like to apply Brow product to add extra definition to your microbladed eyebrow as the result from this treatment is a natural day to day brow. conditioning it to a super shine. And a pleasant fragrance from the mix ads to the comfort of it all. I have to say I really enjoyed the treatment, I get my hair coloured regularly but for some reason this seemed to take less time, the colour was rinsed through and the shampooed as normal, A colour Radiance post colour treatment was massaged and left to work for 5-10minutes then is was rinsed and styled as normal, the results speak for themselves. I felt the shine was certainly visible and the one thing I took away was the comfort of it all, I do suffer from irritable scalp and can sometimes ‘know all about it when I colour my hair but this treatment left my scalp feeling great. Kerry Business Woman to launch new book
A new book by Breeda Hurley explores the Kerry woman’s determination to survive and thrive in the face of life’s challenges. In “Survive and Thrive: The Journey of a Lifetime”, Breeda gives a fascinating insight into the world of a woman who, over the journey of a lifetime, has juggled the demands of family and business life, sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding but never, ever giving up. She writes with honesty, compassion and humour as she describes a life that, at times, tested her to her very limits. ‘I am an ordinary woman who decided as a young mom to work for myself. From my early teenage years, I worked very hard for other people and then I thought: “Why don’t I do this for myself?.” I started a number of these businesses without any capital; all I had was the belief that I could do it. I did not become a success overnight. It took a lot of trial and error and necessitated a lot of sacrifices before I finally made it,’ Breeda said.
Born into poverty, Breeda decided at a very young age that she would forge a better life for herself and ensure that her family would have what she never had - education, physical comforts, a secure home. She got married at twenty and made her first forays into selfemployment at the age of thirty when she had four children. She started running her first serious business when she was thirty-seven. Less than three years later, when she was forty and the mother of seven children, she had lost everything. Breeda, however, was determined not to give up and moved to London with her husband and children, determined to work hard and save so that they could return home, pay off their debts and start over. The challenge of resettling the family in a foreign country, of finding work and dealing with the emotional struggle of being away from familiar supports are all outlined in a manner that is simultaneously gripping, heart-rending and humorous. The family’s return to Kerry is a moment of great joy tinged with great sadness but they start out again and, after a roller-coaster ride into the world of business before, during and after the boom, Breeda describes the place of contentment she found herself in, when, in 2016, she received a lifetime achievement award for twenty-one years in business. Now a grandmother, Breeda is ready for the next part of her journey as an inspirational speaker ready to share her life story with both readers and audiences who cannot but stand back in awe when they encounter the determination, passion, joy and never-give-up attitude of this feisty north Kerry woman.
The official launch of the book takes place at The Rose Hotel, on the 12th of May 2017 Doors open at 7.30pm. All welcome E: info@breedahurleycommunications.com T: 066 712 2674 / 087 265 7549 W: www.breedahurleycommunications.com

2017
Since its inception in 2001, Tour de Munster has raised over €2.4 million for its beneficiaries, with over €1.9 million for DSI alone, with a staggering €285,655 raised in 2016. All cyclists cover their own expenses. Tour de Munster’s annual Partnership Spin coincided with the Charity Partnership Announcement. A new route for the cycle saw the cyclists going west to take in West Kerry’s finest spots through Camp to Annascaul and back to Tralee via Castlemaine. Cyclists paid homage to Tom Crean along the way and adventurous participants tested their stamina on Caherconree. This year’s Tour de Munster begins on Thursday, August 10th in Cork City and continues over four days around the six counties of Munster until it culminates back in Cork on Sunday, August 13th. Cycling legend, Sean Kelly, who is an avid supporter of Tour de Munster, will once again cycle with the group for the full four days of the Tour. Employee Assistance Programme
Revenue – Making a Voluntary Disclosure Revenue has been prominent recently with offshore disclosures being discussed in media. In addition, Revenue interventions have increased, in the form of audits and revenue enquiries. So what should you do in the event of a Revenue Intervention? Presumption of Innocence All taxpayers are entitled to be treated with the presumption of innocence. Revenue are required to follow their Code of Practice which can be downloaded from Revenue Website. Why was I Selected? Revenue interventions are very rarely random anymore. Systems such as Reap (risk analysis system) and CRISP(Customs Risk Intervention Selection Programme), tip offs and sector reviews usually identifies high risk tax payers who are likely to be selected for review. Keeping tax returns and payments up to date usually keeps your risk level lower. Should I make a Voluntary Disclosure? In circumstances where tax has been underpaid it is always better to admit an error or mistake and correct it, rather than wait for revenue to uncover it. Advantages of Making a Voluntary Disclosure • Substantially Lower Penalty • Should prevent publication in List of Tax Defaulters NB: It is a requirement that payment is made of underpaid tax, interest and penalty, before a qualifying disclosure will be accepted. Failure to make Disclosure Sometimes matters will come to light during audits which result in additional tax liabilities. When this happens, it is beneficial to co-operate with revenue and argue your case based on relevant tax legislation not on feelings of injustice.

There are times when we all need some extra support to balance the strains of life whether that be at work or at home. Living in a stressful age - millions of people living in modern countries find themselves stressed out, depressed or sick. Modern living brings with it many stresses for people to face whether it is a grinding commute, finical pressures, work pressures or family concerns. Everyone would admit to feeling stressed on occasions, but very few people are possibly aware of just how stressed they are. Considering this employers may consider introducing flexible working hours, part time working, job sharing or an Employee Assistance Programme. To help support employees an Employee Assistance Programme – offered free and confidential to the employee - can provide advice and counselling supports to employees should they need it. The support staff of EAPs are specialists in fields such as well-being etc. The service is designed to help employees with a wide range of work, family and personal issues. Topics include, but are not limited to: • Relationships • Disability and illness • Bereavement and loss • Anxiety and depression • Bullying and harassment • Workplace pressure
• Health and well-being • Debt • Stress • Family issues • Consumer rights
The benefits to the employer of introducing the service are vast and overall will result in improved employee performance and motivation. The Economics of Mental Health Care in Ireland estimated the direct annual cost of poor mental health is at least €3 billion or 2 per cent of GNP. By taking positive actions employers can reduce this figure and encourage staff to deal with the challenges they are facing in a supported and structured way. By putting these structures in place employers and managers are in a better position to deal with issues as it can be difficult to know what to say when these issues are evident amongst staff. Employers will also reap the rewards of a happier, healthier and more productive The HR Suite can help you set up an Employee Assistance Programme at a reasonable cost which we are happy to provide a quote on please contact us on 066 710 2887

BY: KEN TOBIN AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS STORY! I’m sure you’ve all heard of an overnight success story, the business who went viral and drove their sales through the roof. You would be forgiven for thinking that marketing on Social Media is that easy, that for little to no money you can transform your sales funnel and drive your business to a whole new level. The truth is, the overnight success story is a myth, nothing happens by accident! Most of those overnight successes didn’t actually happen overnight, they were strategically planned over a period of time, with a well-financed marketing strategy. For most business owners, Social Media should simply be the glue that ties all your other marketing together, it’s your R&D hub, your customer feedback area, your lead generator, your market research, your ‘about us’ page….and when you need it to be, it’s a very effective paid marketing tool. There are lots of things we can do with Social Media, but the one thing it won’t do is make your business an overnight success – That takes time, hard work, planning and investment. WeeBiz Media are a Kerry Based Social Media Consultancy, offering Training and Social Media Management for Businesses, Groups and Organisations weebizmedia@gmail.com 0868162105 (Ken) www.weebizmedia.com
