EDITOR NOTE Hi everyone, School has resumed, late nights playing in the garden are limited to weekends and in general we are all back to routine, but the fun and frolics haven’t stopped. We may not have made it to the AllIreland with our senior team but our minors certainly put on a wonderful display so I encourage you all to give them the support they deserve on AllIreland Day. We met with new Rose of Tralee, Offaly Doctor Jennifer Byrne and we have lots of pictures from what has been happening through festival week. We look forward to catching up with Jennifer later in the year for an in depth interview on how her year is going but for now it’s off to Listowel for the ever popular Harvest Racing Festival. It’s a tradition in Kerry now really, the summer is not officially over until you have spent a day at Listowel Races. Kicking off on September 10th a bumper week is promised with the very popular Ladies Day on Friday the 15th. It’s the men’s turn on Thursday 14th for best dressed with Saturday being vintage day, and yes we have tickets to giveaway to all three days so check it out inside. We have a great wedding feature with lots of tips and ideas for those thinking of getting married, so we hope that if you are planning your big day you will get some ideas from this. So all in all there’s lots for you to catch up with, get the kids to school, boil the kettle and take a little time out with your cup of tea and your favourite monthly read, we all need a little me time…. . Until next month,

Dr. Jennifer is our
New Rose of Tralee JENNIFER Byrne, a doctor from Clonderrig, Co Offaly is the 2017 Rose of Tralee and the first from the Faithful County to take the title in the Festival’s long history. RTÉ’s Dáithí Ó Sé announced the result in front of nearly one million television viewers and an audience of 2000 people in the Festival Dome. Jennifer (24) was presented with her sash and tiara by 2016 Rose of Tralee Maggie McEldowney and Robbie Scanlon, Managing Director of Tipperary Crystal, lead sponsors of the Festival. Top Irish country singer, Derek Ryan serenaded Jennifer in the Dome and again on Denny Street in the heart of Tralee where thousands of people turned out for the Midnight Madness Parade and fireworks display. Speaking straight after the announcement, Jennifer Byrne said: “I think my heart is about to jump out of my chest but I’m really, really excited but I genuinely can’t believe it, it’s fantastic. My first thought was ‘did Dáithí actually just say my name, I wasn’t really expecting it at all’. I thought ‘this is going to be incredible’. Maggie McEldowney is an unbelievable representative for the Rose of Tralee and I’ll be asking her for a few tips because I have got big boots to fill now.” A sports enthusiast, Jennifer has played soccer and Gaelic football from a very early age, and has represented Ireland in soccer at U17 and U19 level and in the World University Games. Jennifer tells us a bit about herself? My name is Jennifer Byrne and I am 24 years old. I’m from a small rural area in Offaly called Clonaderig. I went to primary school in my local village, Ballinahown, and then went to secondary school in Our Lady’s Bower in Athlone. I studied Medicine at NUI Galway and thoroughly enjoyed my college years. I am currently working as a junior doctor in the Accident and
Emergency department of University College Hospital Galway. It can be challenging at times, but I genuinely love my job and I’m very fortunate to be working in such a rewarding profession. Sport has always been an enjoyable part of my life. I’ve played soccer and Gaelic football from a very early age, and have been fortunate enough to represent Ireland in soccer at U17 and U19 level and in the World University Games. I’ve made so many friends and have some fantastic memories through sport. I am currently playing with Galway WFC in the Women’s National league. I also enjoy spending time with my family, socialising with friends, travelling, table tennis and tea! As a medical student, I volunteered at Barretstown, a charity set up for children living with a serious illness and their families. It was an incredible experience and I really learned a lot from it. I also volunteered in Mpongwe Mission Hospital in Zambia through a charity called Volunteer Services Abroad. It was a life changing experience and opened my eyes to how fortunate we are here in Ireland. I am honoured to be the 2017 Offaly Rose and I was so excited to meet my fellow Roses, Rose Escorts and everyone involved in the Rose of Tralee International Festival. I am really thankful for all the support I have been given and so grateful for this fantastic opportunity. We will as always follow Jennifer’s year and will catch up with her in our Christmas issue to bring you all the news on what she’s been up to and her plans for 2018.

Some other events during the week included the dazzling Rose Ball Friday night which saw over 1200 people descend on the Dome to dance the night away and really kick off the Rose of Tralee. A delicious meal was provided as always by the very professional Brook Catering. Roses present and past mingled with guests and a fun night was had by all. The parade on Saturday night was a fantastic family affair and it was wonderful to see the throngs of families lining the streets with young kids eyes glistening in awe of the Roses, the escorts were most entertaining on the streets and stopped to chat with many families. Of course the highlight of the parade was the spectacular array of Fireworks, they were outstanding and the dry weather added to the atmosphere of the event.
Sunday of course is all about fashion, we first took ourselves to Ballygarry House Hotel and Spa where blogger ‘Lisa Lust Loves’ mingled with the ladies who were treated to an array of Cocktails and Canapes. Lisa spoke about her love for fashion and of course her association with the rose of Tralee with her being a former Rose contestant. After that it was off to the Dome for the ever popular Rose of Tralee Fashion Show, which year after year seems to hold the interest of the ladies of Kerry and beyond.. Style and fashion was the order of the night with a few entertaining additions including the performance of Dancing with the Stars champion Aidan O Mahony. A great night was had by all. No rest for us here at Connect as it was an early start on Monday morning as we headed to Siamsa Tire for Women’s Academy, hosted by Norah 6 | Connect Kerry | September 2017
Casey and supported by Caroline McEnery and the HR Suite. It was a morning of reflection and getting into the zone with where you are in your own life. We heard some wonderful people speak about where they are now and where they started from, amongst the speakers business women Carol Brick of ‘Her Money’ and Colette Twomey of ‘Clonakilty Foods’ spoke of their journey in business and were inspirational, the morning was finished off with a walk around the park with the roses. Of course we all watched with anticipation as all the roses were put through their paces with Daithi on stage but we must remember the Rose is not chosen on this interview alone and they are in fact put through a series of tough interviews through the week of events so the judges can get to know the girls and choose who they feel is best suited from the group to be an ambassador for the year. Tuesday night at midnight Jennifer Byrne was presented to a packed Denny Street. The weather duly performed and it was a crisp clear night as the skies welcomed yet another spectacular performance of fireworks to officially close what was a wonderful week in the town. To all involved in the Rose of Tralee we send you our congratulations and say well done on yet another great year. Tralee and Kerry should be very proud to have this production each year that puts it so strongly on the map and I would encourage everyone to support it in any way they can. Looking forward to 2018 already as I am sure the plans in HQ will begin immediately.

HEALTHY BONES AND JOINTS One of the most familiar physical signs of ageing is aching hips, knees and soreness in our bones and joints. All of us suffer from aches and pains from time to time either due to a specific health condition or perhaps from exercise or gardening or generally over doing things. Of course wear and tear and walking around on the same pair of hips and knees for decades can lead to soreness as can serious sporting activity but the good news is that there are natural ways to help yourself.
OMEGA 3 FISH OILS: potent anti-inflammatory and alleviates pain and swelling GINGER / BROMELAIN: both of which are known to aid inflammation in conditions such as arthritis.
Avoid fizzy drinks as these leach calcium from your bones!!
DEVILS CLAW: traditionally used for over 30 years to relieve everyday aches and pains in the joints. Suitable for all types of joint pain such as back/ muscle ache and pain and rheumatic pain. Available in both gel and tablet form. ZINCUFLEX: combines Ginger, Curcumin and Vitamin C. The main role of this complex is to help reduce friction between moving joints and help contribute to normal collagen formulation and function of bones and cartilage.
And adequate intake of calcium at all stages of life, in combination with an active lifestyle will help ensure that bones are as strong as possible. Remember that without sufficient Vitamin D the body cannot absorb calcium. There are numerous calcium and vitamin D supplements available in both liquid and tablet form if you think you may be deficient in either.
NHP OSTEO SUPPORT: a special mineral and vitamin food supplement providing Vit D3, Calcium, Magnesium and Zinc to help maintain strong healthy bones.
It is common sense that carrying any extra weight will put added strain on your joints so try to lose weight if you are experiencing pain or stiffness. Weight –bearing exercise such as walking is ideal or pilates which corrects the posture and strengthens muscles, alleviating pressure on joints. Make sure you are eating enough protein from meat, fish and eggs as well as adding lentils and seeds to your food, protein is needed to maintain bone mass.
Another supplement to bear in mind is GLUCOSAMINE SULPHATE, taken to stimulate cartilage production and may also help to reduce pain and improve joint function.
Most bone pain is caused by inflammation so taking natural anti-inflammatories may help. Some of the better known natural anti-inflammatories are:
Until Next Time, Stay Healthy
Antioxidants such as VITAMIN A, C and E also play a large role in joint health so up your intake of fruit and vegetables, or purchase a good quality ANTI-OXIDANT FORMULA.
This is just a brief look at some of the natural products available to aid joint health so please ask in store where we are happy to discuss which products suits your specific requirements.

THE THATCH, Lisselton The Thatch Lisselton is a family run business based in North Kerry on the Wild Atlantic Way. Established in 1832, it is one of the few thatched bars remaining in Ireland. In June of 2017 husband and wife John & Joanne O Connor and sister Elaine Riordan, took it over. Joanne and Elaine are Lisselton natives and it was always a passion to go into the hospitality and tourism sector. The old traditional style thatch bar remains and features a welcoming open fire with an original pot and crane. The lounge and restaurant has been remodelled whilst retaining the old traditional style. Work is continuing on reopening the kitchen and it is hoped to be ready by mid-October. Located in the centre of North Kerry The Thatch is the ideal venue for all family parties and functions.
The restaurant and courtyard has recently been remodelled and is an idyllic venue for a vintage wedding or party.

Catherine’s Fashion Fix Hi, My name is Catherine Keane and I have a fashion blog on Facebook called ‘Catherine’s Fashion Fix’. I hope you had a great summer. This month I am going to talk about transseasonal dressing as we move into autumn. Do you find yourself struggling like me to know what to wear in the morning? Are you wondering how to dress to be comfortable when the day warms up and that you are not freezing first thing? WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF TRANS-SEASONAL DRESSING!
You may be wondering what on earth this actually means? Well, trans-seasonal dressing is actually the transition from summer towards winter and from winter towards summer again. Especially with our unpredictable weather in Ireland where we see all four seasons in one that means the majority of months.
weather cools. Blazers can be worn over tees, dresses and shirts. It’s time to replace your strappy sandals with mules and ankle boots. A denim jacket, leather jacket and trench coat are must have pieces for this time of year and will also stand the test of time.
Tip 3. Accessorize! Accessorize! Accessorize!
Nothing keeps your look more vibrant and fabulous during this transitional period than great accessories. Whether it’s a printed scarf or statement neckpiece accessories are key to making your outfit work.
Well the answer to this problem is LAYERING. In order to master this type of dressing you need to be able to take something off or put something on. Below, I will give you some simple tips to get more wear out of your wardrobe while maintaining your own sense of style without breaking the bank.
Tip 1. Have the Basics Covered
I believe in beginning with quality basics such as long sleeved t-shirts, crisp white shirt, jeans, black trousers and leggings. These really are the foundation of your look but also need to be good enough to stand on their own if you need to delayer during the day.
Tip 2. Key Layering Pieces
You can still wear your favourite summer dress or top (depending on fabric and colour) or cropped trousers during this period but layer with lightweight cardigans, wraps, and gilets. Try adding leggings under tunics and dresses as the
Scarves are a great accessory all year round, but are particularly functional during this time of the year. Printed scarves instantly add detailing and colour to an outfit. They are always great to use when layering, and when it gets a little too warm during the day you can take it off. If you are still finding it a little too warm for a scarf, a statement necklace is the perfect replacement. I use colour as an accessory as this can really bring an outfit to life. Just because we are moving into winter does not mean you have to start wearing dark colours. Have you ever noticed how well colours look during the dark days of winter?
Tip 4. Always Remember!
Know your body type and dress for it. Look forward not back! Until next time,
Catherine x

Choosing the Correct Dress Weddings are such a wonderful time and if we are to be honest about it the dream every girl has is her ideal wedding dress but this can turn to a nightmare without preparation, the extravagant white dress is not for everyone so we asked award winning designer Hazel Comyn for some looks on other styles that may suit someone looking for something less traditional and also some tips on the all-important dress shopping etiquette 1. Be careful who you bring with you when you’re looking for your perfect dress. Too many opinions can leave you with a dress that suits someone else’s style instead of yours. Bring someone who knows you and is honest. 2. Wear the right underwear and bring heels when looking and for fittings. It will give a
more accurate idea of fit. 3. Please don’t wear fake tan. Wedding dresses are expensive and it’s very difficult to get it off the dresses if it transfers onto the dress. A lot of Designers and Boutiques have a ‘No Fake Tan Policy’. 4. Expect to pay a deposit and sign a contract when you choose your dress. It protects everyone involved. Ask about hidden costs for alterations etc. so you know about them before you sign. Always get a copy of the agreement and make sure you read it before you sign. 5. Try on dresses and have fun!!! Don’t forget to speak to Bridal wear Designers. They can sometimes be a better option than buying off the rail as they design for you and your individual style. Having a dress designed for you usually costs the same as buying a dress. The difference is it’s unique and original. Hazel Comyn, 19 Main Street, Cahersiveen, Co Kerry, V23 YX62. Hair Care for your Big Day Everyone says your dress is the most important decision however we think hair and makeup are just up there in the priorities so we chat with award winning stylist Tricia O Sullivan to give us some top tips for your perfect wedding day hair. To have an amazing hairstyle on your wedding day you will need to have amazing condition hair, especially if you plan on wearing your hair down. For that reason your wedding day hair starts long before your hair trial. - To achieve prime condition hair the first step is to trim your
hair regularly.
- Avoid heat styling by cutting down on GHD use and blow-
drying your hair.
- If you wash and style your hair daily have at least 3 days
where you dry naturally and tie back your hair loosely. When you do use heat always use a heat protection spray.
- If you colour your hair regularly it is never a good idea to
opt for a drastic colour change prior to your wedding. - Where possible use a semi-permanent
colour. If you have to use a permanent colour then use a colour bomb in between colouring, a colour bomb (also known as a colour ball) contains no peroxide and will give great shine to faded colour, you can also use a clear bomb the
24 | Connect Kerry | September 2017
week before the wedding to give extra lustre to the hair. - Consider adding a few subtle
highlights to really show off the detail on an up style or to add to a down style.
- Bond builders like olaplex are fantastic if you highlight your hair, reducing hair breakage and improving condition. - Stop all conditioning treatments the week prior to the
wedding, treatments are invaluable to the hairs condition but a recent treatment application can add weight to the hair which is not what you want on the wedding day.
- Meet up with your stylist 6 months prior to the wedding to
discuss your hair care plan, book in all you treatments, trims and colours so they are spaced out to have your last colour and treatment 7-10 days before the big day.
- Have your hair trial around 3 months prior, your wedding day stylist will advise you if you need extensions, if you don’t fancy clip ons but don’t want to have extensions long term then tape-on extensions may be a good option for you. These extensions are super safe on the hair as they are repositioned to the root every 6 to 8 weeks. Triona & Clement
Triona Brick, Tralee and Clement Egan, Kildare recently got married at Barberstown Castle. A fun filled day, to the theme of many wonderful movies. It was a truly lovely day with family and friends. We asked the bride for her thoughts and she replied: ‘It was honestly the best day we could’ve hoped for and we can’t thank everyone who helped make that happen enough. We decided long ago that we were going to enjoy the day and do our best to make sure everyone else did too. Anything that compromised that just wasn’t worth it. We spared expense where we could (I’m very happy to say my flowers were from Tesco!) and used it instead for the things we believed definitely were (such as good wine!)”

Hello lovelies,
Beauty Corner
Here we are in September already - how did that happen? This month we are all about weddings and bridal beauty and if you know me at all by now it won’t come as any surprise that I am going to recommend a great skincare plan now in advance of the big day! Planning beautiful skin should be on every brides ‘to do’ list before she says ‘I do’ (see what I did there?) No matter how well organised and calm a bride is in the run up to the wedding there are bound to be the inevitable moments of stress which are pretty much unavoidable. Stress can manifest itself on the skin in many ways but some of the most common symptoms are redness, inflammation, sensitivity, dullness and lack of radiance. Luckily our friends at Lancóme have recently launched a beautiful new serum in the best selling Advanced Genifique range to combat these issues. I have had the pleasure of trialing this serum over the last 4 weeks and I can tell you honestly that my skin looks the best it has in a long time and considering I have spent the last month travelling long distances and also moving house this is a miracle! Advanced Genifique Sensitive is a fusion of probiotics and antioxidants which work in harmony to sooth the skin and at the same time protect it from the negative effects of stress. The recommendation is to wear at night under your cream but you can also wear it daytime too (again, under cream). Use for one month and prepare to be very impressed with the results. This really is an ideal treatment for anyone to use before a big event to help the skin look it’s absolute best. Pop into your Lancóme counter the next time you are in town to try this beautiful serum yourself and don’t forget that you can have your exact foundation shade matched for you in Teint Idole Ultra Wear and receive a 5 day sample in your perfect shade from Lancóme while you are there- now how about that for bridal beauty service?!! Wedding Skincare The date is set and you are making it Official with the love of your life. A lot of planning goes into making your Wedding Day special for both of you, your families and guests. It happens all too often where the Bride forgets about the planning necessary for her own beauty and well being needs. There has to be a plan for flawlessly radiant skin and the earlier you start the better. Schedule an appointment with your skincare therapist for an indepth consultation and make sure you address your own concerns. Once this is completed a treatment and product plan can be put in place. To have a perfectly flawless complexion on your wedding day you need to start having a regular facial at least every 4 to 6 weeks from 8/6 months prior to your wedding day. Your skin needs consistent care leading up to your Wedding Day. For brides we recommend the HydraFacial MD, known as the VIP Red Carpet Facial, the go to facial by the stars for the Oscars, and on our shores highly recommended by The Skin Nerd, Jennifer Rock and Pippa O Connor. The products we use here at The Sanctuary are SkinCeuticals, the Gold Standard in Skin care, which is a key factor behind fresh, radiant looking skin. The proper use of Hyaluronic Acid and Ferulic Acid is a good way to balance skin hydration and the correct use of retinol for fine lines. If you have skin concerns like acne, pigmentation, its best to get this under control in advance. In addition fine lines, pores, loss of skin tightness, redness can all be attended to with the correct treatment and products. Don’t forget the lips, use a SPF Lip Balm every day, it will not only restore and nourish your lips it will also keep them hydrated. SPF for the Face is a MUST EVERYDAY. Do you know that spf in your moisturiser only gives you protection for a few hours, the best protection is a specific oil free SPF applied after your moisturiser. No bride or any of us like the look of puffy eyes and dark circles a good eyecare routine works wonders along with controlling stress levels and plenty of sleep. A lot of brides will have brows and lashes tinted and apply lash extensions. They can make all the difference to your face. The brows frame the face and a good eyebrow shape or the perfect HD Brows will enhance the eyes. Make sure that you have a trial of this about 2 months before the wedding so that you are happy with the overall effect. That is the face taken care of now let’s look to the Body. It goes without saying that regular exercise, a healthy diet and at least 2 litres of water a day go a long way to keeping us healthy both inside and out. But us ladies can have the odd problem with cellulite or those few inches that will not budge no matter what we do. Within reason there is a remedy for everything. If Cellulite is the problem LPG Endermologie will get rid of it. This treatment is FDA Approved for the permanent reduction of Cellulite, a course of treatments are necessary at weekly intervals and on the plus side it also helps to shape and contour the body. If you have tried diet and exercise but still have fat and inches you just can’t lose Its time for Verju. Verju targets stubborn fat areas 30 | Connect Kerry | September 2017
and painlessly emulsifies the fat under your skin, it is then safely eliminated using the lymphatic system. Exfoliate the body once a week and use a good body moisturiser to keep the skin soft and hydrated. Now, The Hands, there is going to be a lot of focus on your hands on your wedding day, so keep your hands and nails in peak condition. Manicures and Pedicures are an essential part of preparing for your wedding, get these started at least two months before the big day. You can then decide if you want to go for Gels, Shellac or the main choice of brides a French Manicure. Waxing, should be a routine at four or six week intervals started months before your wedding day. Nearer to the big day 2 to 3 days beforehand. Keep in mind if you are having a Spray Tan I would suggest 4 days beforehand. There will be no problems then with pores or dry skin patches. Always trial your spray tan. For those getting married I wish you all a lifetime of Health and Happiness, Relax and enjoy your Wedding Day, leave the worrying to the professionals , that is their job. .

WeddingSeason by Zoe O’Connor
Tis the season for celebration and more than that it is the season for weddings. I’m a sucker for a good cry at a wedding, but more than anything else I enjoy the dressing up and glamour that is involved in all of these things. Personally I don’t like the regular ‘wedding dressing’. You know what I’m taking about, the floral extravaganzas and the array of fasteners. In many cases, and of course there are a billion exceptions, people feel obliged to wear these kind of looks even though they don’t suit them. There seems to be so many unwritten rules about wedding attire that people feel too scared to break - leaving them pretty boxed in, and obliged to choose an ensemble that is a) not white or black b) not OTT so they don’t steal attention from the bride and c) something resembling Kate Middleton. I do agree that someone else’s wedding day is definitely not the time to be an attention stealer, but that doesn’t mean you have to blend into the background with the usual dreary & dull dress. I don’t know about you, but personally I am never happier when I see something a little different stepping up to a wedding. Something that is classy yet colourful, conservative (in some cases at least!) yet cute. Thankfully,

there is a huge selection of beautiful pieces in all of the boutiques dotted around the country. Why not make the whole occasion even more fun by grabbing a few friends and going shopping - even if it ends up being window shopping, you are bound to leave with an abundance of ideas that you could pick up for a steal somewhere else. Since people often choose the outfits that are more ‘wedding safe’ which means that you never get to wear them again. Why waste your money? Just think a little more outside the box when picking up your ‘wedding outfit’ in the first place and you can get something that, with a few different accessories, can be worn to a million different occasions. I know I sound like your grandmother but you might as well get your money’s worth! For people my age, I know that for any event ASOS (or any of the other leading online sites) are the first place that we visit. Which isn’t a bad thing, as at our age, we tend not to recycle our clothes as much as we should. But if you want to invest in a beautiful bag or a delightful dress - hit up the shops in your local town, and I can guarantee that you will find something that will last longer than anything that Penney’s can provide. Enjoy this wedding season,
Zoë

PEARLY WHITES AN DR MARCAS MAC DOMHNAILL
Beatha agus Sláinte chugaibh, As the autumn creeps in, many families have to make the annual back to school purchases. Uniforms and books are often discussed but we seldom hear a discussion on mouth guards. If your child plays a contact sport, then a mouth guard is an essential piece of their kit. Always make sure that the mouth guard fits the mouth. The best mouth guards are ones that are made specially for the patient from a dental impression. This will ensure that it will fit tightly over the teeth and will not be dislodged on impact. The alternative to this is a standard ‘stock tray’ which is heated and moulded into place over the teeth by the patient and/or parent. These trays will loose their shape when the temperature changes. They are not the ideal protective mouth guard as they are easily dislodged on impact. Keeping your mouth guard clean is necessary for overall oral health. Always wash with luke-warm soapy water and then rinse well before storing them away. Beir Bua.

Insight Last month, I said I’d write more about insight and agency. This month, I’d like to focus on insight. Insight is the capacity to understand the nature of an issue beyond the obvious. It requires willingness to examine the motivation and origins of our perceptions, beliefs and behaviours, which can sometimes be uncomfortable. We are inclined to attribute a lot of our decisions and actions to fate, or “that’s just the way it is”. Very often, people use the phrase “That’s just me” to explain why they behave in a particular way, especially if that behaviour has poor outcomes. With insight, we can determine more clearly WHY we do certain things, particularly things that are not necessarily good for us. Do you keep getting into relationships that are unhealthy? Do you have habits or obsessions that don’t help you in your life? Do you find yourself unable to stand up to certain people, or repeatedly get yourself into situations that are out of your control? Understanding why this is the case is the first step to being able to manage your life more beneficially. Examination of the self requires that you ask, and fully answer, questions that lead you to the root cause. In therapy, a therapist will lead a client through this process in such a way as to bring the benefit of insight to the client, but it is also possible to adopt this as a habit to become more aware and more powerful in your life. Next month, I will discuss techniques and methods to use in developing this capacity, and how this leads to increased agency.

Charlie Chaplin COMEDY FILM FESTIVAL
Lifestyle |Connect
Large crowds descended on the small village of Waterville to welcome followers and fans of Charlie Chaplin and to celebrate the Charlie Chaplin Comedy Film Festival. Now in its seventh year it’s growing each year with new additions to the festival. The opening parade on Thursday night got proceedings underway and some short film screenings and the Charlie Chaplin picture gallery were visited by guests to the village. Friday had a an action packed day with entertainment, short films from the Chaplin era, a Charleston workshop in the big top for those who wanted to learn to dance, the BBQ and street entertainment welcomed the dry evening and lots of fun was had. Saturday morning the awaited exclusive interview of Samantha Jane Power (United States Ambassador to the United Nations from 2013-2017), drew many visitors. She gave a frank and honest interview about her time served and the challenges she faced. She referred to her position which was a strong commitment to the USA and also how she juggled being a mother / wife with such a high powered role. It was a wonderful and interesting interview and she spoke to a full house at the Sea Lodge Hotel for two hours. She is an absolute lady who loves to come back to Waterville to relax and unwind. I would advise those of you that haven’t already read her book ‘Chasing the Flame’ go and get it. Saturday evening saw the very popular world record attempt at entering the Guinness book of records for the most Charlie chaplins and family and friends got together for the parade. We don’t think the record was reached but it certainly was lots of fun. The Fossett family are a great support to the festival and provided their big top for many events thoughout the weekend which added to the atmosphere. All in all it was a wonderful weekend, the committee put huge work into it, the bars and restaurants pull out all the stops to ensure all visitors to the village are fed and entertained so I would highly recommend it for the diary next year when deciding what events to visit locally.

FACEBOOK: Lisa Curran Soprano
This month be sure to keep Friday 22nd of September free for ‘Culture Night’ there is activity happening all over the county, I myself am involved with teaching the junior singing starz choir(ages 5-8) in Killarney with Voiceworks studios in conjunction with Kerry county council for a performance that night and it will be very exciting for them. Culture night is not just music the Kerry county museum and Siamsa Tire have a lot planned for the event too. There are performances everywhere so keep your eyes peeled for information on what is happening and do try and go to listen to something new and of course support Kerry talent.
GIG OF THE MONTH The Riptide Movement - Inec fri 15th September €20 The riptide Movement are anIrish band formed in 2006 in Dublin, the have a great mix of pop, rock and indie in their albums so they really do appeal to a wide audience. Theyre big hit was ‘All works out’ Thebvand is made up of vocalist and guitarist Mal Tuohy, guitarist John Dalton, bassist and harmonica player Gerry McGarry and drummer Gar Byrne. They are upbeat and Im sure it would be a great night in the INEC. If they are not your style though Crystal Swing are also playing the INEC that night in the ballroom for €10. Crystal Swing are a new wave country and western and Irish family group from Lisgoold, they went viral in 2010 with the release of their video for ‘he drinks tequilla’ and have since claimed international success even being featurd by Ellen DeGeneres on her Patricks day video the same year. When I play a song and it brings a person back to a special place/moment/time in their life - What projects are you working on at the moment? Will I go with a ten letter word - What is the stand out moment of your career for you personally so far? A few but Id say interviewing Kenny Rogers would be up there - What is the most important piece of advice you’ve ever been given regarding music? None really but I would advise that it has a way of making someones day or into a fit of depression - What kerry/Irish musician/band really inspires you? Walking on Cars and Karrie to mention 2 But Tommy Flemimg and Marc Roberts are also up there as the nice guys in the business - Knocknagoshel Pattern Rose This was my last year being the MC for the the Knocknagoshel Pattern Rose. What started out as a “lovely girls” competition now sees the winner going forward to the Kerry Rose selection and the proceeds going to the Kerry /Cork health link bus. One word..Proud. BE SURE TO TUNE IN TO RADIO KERRY WEEKDAYS 11-1 TO LISTEN TO FRANCIS JONES
GOING BACK TO OR BEGINNING MUSIC LESSONS Going back to music lessons no matter the instrument can be daunting in September after the Summer break, as I said last month, make sure you give yourself a goal to work towards and you and your teacher will experience learning curves together and overcome them. If you are heading back to or indeed looking to start music lessons, do your research, yes a schools name and reputation can be appealing but look into the actual teacher, the school is just the building or person that pays the bills, the teacher is who you will

be relying on, independent teachers are widespread across the county and in multiple styles, ask some of their past pupils, current pupils, parents of those students and if possible contact them directly with plans of what you or your child are hoping to achieve. (confidence, new skill, looking to do it for a state exam etc.) I personally use the first lesson each term to draw up a plan based on any previous achievements and weekly write in a ‘homework journal’ any work that needs to be done as well as recording lessons on a regular basis to listen back on to point out any improvements which can be hard to hear in the lesson for the student themselves and I find this is very important and greatly encouraging for the student as well as helping the parents of younger students to know how to help at home (it also avoids the dreaded conversation ‘what did you do in class today?’….’Nothing!!’) Happy learning to all you musicians heading back or beginning in September, it is always wonderful to know there are so many musicians in the county at different levels. Be sure to follow me on social media for updates on workshops from artists coming up in the county, sinigng exercises, behind the scene rehearsals and feel free to ask any questions.

MAKE A BORING BUSINESS STAND OUT! You might think not all businesses should be on Social Media, especially some of those ‘less exciting’ ones. What’s exciting about Refuse Disposal, VAT returns, or even Software Installs! And in many cases you’d be right. Some businesses just don’t excite a mass audience. However, shying away from the massive audience on Social Media because you’re business doesn’t offer engaging content is wrong, you need to look deeper into what you have, that can engage with your audience. Here are some Simple Tips you can use to help your less exciting business engage on Social Media: 1. Your Culture – Showcase the People that work in your business, post pictures of your workplace, highlight your employees – put a face to the name. 2. Be the Expert – Write Blog posts that showcases your knowledge, not just on your business, but on your entire industry – engaging people interested in your entire field. 3. Take-Over’s – Allow your Employees to ‘take-over’ your Social Media for a week, giving your audience a new perspective and
visually demonstrating the employees work week from early morning start to weekend activity. 4. Testimonials – No matter what industry you are in, you are in the business of satisfying a customer – well showcase those customers who are happy with the work you’ve done – Aim for recording Video Testimonials for better engagement. 5. Show Personality – Just because you’re being more personable on Social Media doesn’t mean you’re not being professional – People buy from People, and don’t be afraid to make a personal connection with your audience! 6. Know Your Platform – Not every Social Media Platform is right for your business. Not because you aren’t able to produce content for that platform, but actually, because your target audience isn’t on every platform.

- RECRUITMENT - KEY POINTS TO CONSIDER -
GETTING MARRIED TAX TIPS While getting married is rarely about the money, it always helps to ensure any potential tax saving are availed of.
Income Tax Most married couples will normally benefit at some point from favourable tax treatment of married couples. This allows unused tax allowances of one spouse to be transferred to the other. o Year of Marriage In the year of marriage spouses are treated as single persons, but can claim a tax refund for any unused tax allowances of the other spouse from the date of marriage to the end of the calendar year. o Subsequent Years Three options are available: 1. Joint Assessment 2. Separate Assessment 3. Single Assessment Normally couples elect for Joint Assessment, as it is the simple option. Separate and Single Assessment are normally used where couples want to keep financial affairs separate.
How? Writing to Revenue and electing for Joint assessment, or using Revenue My Account (Online).
Capital Gains Tax Transfers between spouses are exempt from Capital Gains Tax. Annual Allowances of ₏1,270 is per person, so double annual exemption is only when assets are disposed in Joint Names.
NB: Transfers prior to marriage are subject to Capital Gains Tax so be careful of timing.
Inheritance Tax Transfers between spouses are exempt from Inheritance Tax.

When a position arises within a company a recruitment strategy must be put in place to recruit the best possible candidate. There is various ways of filling a position including: - Reallocation of Work - Transfer of Staff - Internal Recruitment - Short Term work - Permanent New Recruit Once you have chosen which option suits your organisation better you must now chose your recruitment strategy. Your options include: - Local Recruitment - International Recruitment - Headhunting - Cross National Advertising - Internal Promotion - Graduate Programmes The advantages of Internal Recruitment i.e. internal promotion firstly saves time and money but also acts as an incentive to all staff regarding possibilities of career progression within an organisation. It is also easier to access the strengths and weaknesses of the applicant due to the employment history you already have with the applicant however it may also create another vacancy due to an existing employee being moved / promoted. External Recruitment offers a wider range of talent in the external market. It also allows to bring new talent and fresh new ideas into the business. The Key documentation in all recruitment campaigns to have in place when recruiting includes: - Job description - Personnel Specification - All Applications/CV’s - Terms and conditions - Interview assessment forms - Feedback from mangers re suitability of Candidates. Recruitment campaigns should always be done with the purpose of Best Practice recruitment in mind in order to recruit the best candidate which will help the organisations competiveness, reduces labour turnover, reduces costs both direct and direct, and eliminates issues with manging poor performers. Hiring managers should always consider the Legal aspects of recruitment. Under the law the recruitment interview may become subject to third party review should a candidate express dissatisfaction: The Freedom of Information Act, The Employment Equality Act, The Equal Status Act. Also any information held on the candidate that can be processed automatically can be accessed by the candidate under the Data Protection Act. An organisation should always be able to clearly show transparency of their recruitment process by having a clearly defined Job description, Personnel Specification for the post, Specific competencies required for the Job, specific interview questions decided upon in advance, and values in terms of marks that are assigned to possible answers. The recruitment process is not as straight forward as many organisations think but if an effective strategy and process is put in place it will enable you to hire quality candidates that are a good fit for the organisation who also can contribute positively to success of the organisation. For advice on recruitment related issues for employers contact any of the team at The HR Suite on 066 7102887 to discuss your requirements.
