TRALEE IS PREPARING TO BLOOM... Kerry Rose Mary Hickey tells us her thoughts as she prepares for her big week in Rathmore. I have always had a keen interest in drama and I am a member of the Marian Players Pantomime Group in Rathmore and Banteer Drama Group also. I love the camaraderie and fun involved in each production. Your family must be very proud?
Of course Festival week is packed with lots of entertainment for all of the family. It’s an event that is recognised worldwide and certainly is a brand that has put Tralee and indeed the entire county on the map all over the world... We catch up with one lovely lady who is representing her own county and welcoming all the other Roses to her home county. Mary Hickey was chosen to represent Kerry in this year’s final so we decided to see how her preparations are going. Congrats on becoming Kerry rose was it always a dream for you? Absolutely! As a little girl I would always watch the Rose of Tralee in the hope that one day I might too take to the stage as a Rose. My cousins and I took proceedings very seriously and would compile our own judging criteria for the selection nights. It is such an honour to have been chosen as the Kerry Rose. The excitement at home, in my local community and around the county is tremendous, it has already been an unforgettable experience. I feel very blessed and fortunate to be going forward and I can’t wait for August. Tell us a little bit about Mary at home and what you like to do to relax and chill out? I am a primary school teacher which is a fantastic job that gives me ample freedom in the evenings to pursue my hobbies and interests. First and foremost I love traditional music; I have a concertina and really enjoy learning and playing the instrument. I have a keen interest in volunteering and for me it is a wonderful way to relax. I supervise at the Social Action Group’s youth centre each week 4

My Mom was never a Rose but she definitely emulates all the qualities of a perfect one. She is extremely proud and excited about the adventures ahead of us in August. She is an exceptional lady, a widow from a very young age, she has always shown great strength and courage in everything she has done and has taught me so much. Her belief in me is unfaltering and she is encouraging and positive about everything I do. She has been my personal assistant, my stylist and my confidante since I became the Kerry Rose in May. I am extremely lucky. You have the advantage of being the home girl and the Kerry Rose do you feel there is extra pressure on you because of this? Not at all! It is certainly a huge honour to represent my favourite place in the whole world but I don’t feel any added pressure. Every Rose will be representing their home, or their home away from home the best they possibly can. I don’t think being from Kerry offers me any advantages, each Rose has an equal chance, however, I do get the extra privilege of welcoming the ladies to Kerry and I think this will be a real highlight of my Rose experience.
Have you got the wardrobe sorted for the week? I am almost finished buying and borrowing at this stage. Now I need to get planning!!! I am extremely lucky, as I am following in the footsteps of last year’s Kerry Rose, Gemma Kavanagh who has been a tremendous support to me and she has given me lots of tips and advice. But Mom has everything under control, our sitting room has now been converted into a style studio and accessories adorn the hallway. What do you think your highlight for the week will be? Is there anything in particular you are secretly looking forward to? I cannot wait to meet all the Roses! I think the highlight will be those special moments when we are having a chat and a little laugh together, enjoying one another’s company, forming lasting friendships and creating life long memories. What would it mean to you to win the title? It would be a beautiful added bonus. It has been an absolute dream to come this far, now I want to live every minute of this experience, enjoy each little thing and make lots of wonderful new friends.
We wish you the very best for your week ahead and we are all very proud of you.

Another amazing event that never seems to loose appeal is the Rose of Tralee Fashion Show, every year over 1600 ladies arrive to take notes on what’s hot for autumn with the first show of the year launching collections from Kerry and beyond. NEW York fashion designer, Don O’Neill will showcase high-octane Red Carpet gowns from THEIA’s Fall/Winter 2014 collection at The Kerryman Rose of Tralee Autumn Winter Fashion Show 2014. Guaranteed to fuel dreams and keep the paparazzi cameras flashing, the Kerrynative will be among a star-studded line-up of designers and boutiques in the Festival Dome on Sunday 17th August. The Producer of the Rose of Tralee Fashion Show, Celia Holman Lee says “The Rose of Tralee International Autumn/ Winter Fashion Showcase will provide an opportunity for 1600 people to view the first of the Autumn/Winter Collections from over 40 designers and boutiques including The Design Centre, Dublin, Synan O’Mahony Designer and Don O’Neill Creative Director of Theia, New York.” Another key aspect of the annual Rose of Tralee International Fashion Showcase on Sunday 17th August will be the exciting Rose of Tralee Fashion Designer Awards 2014.
to refine and cultivate their ‘look’ while still experimenting and having fun with fashion. Local established designers as well as the crop of up and coming designers are providing unique and original clothes that are fashion forward and exciting. With so many weddings, race meetings, fashion luncheons, fundraisers and awards shows.” Don O’Neill has just completed his Resort 2015 Collection which was favourably reviewed by Women’s Wear Daily and well received by the buyers. Four actresses wore THEIA on the TONY AWARDS Red Carpet, Cassadee Pope (winner of season 3’s The Voice USA) wore THEIA on the Red Carpet at the CMT Awards and American rock star Melissa Etheridge’s wife Linda Wallem wore THEIA at their star studded wedding in California. One lucky person in the audience will leave the venue on the night as the Best Dressed Lady with a prize valued at €1000 from The Loop at Dublin and Cork Airports. It’s definitely a night not to be missed so get looking through the wardrobe ladies and get ready for an evening not to be missed.
This is an awards ceremony to salute all the Irish design talent that is emerging in Ireland at the moment. Renowned designer Aideen Bodkin one of Ireland’s most successful Designers will be on hand as Head Judge for this award. Don O’Neill, who will take part in his third successive Rose of Tralee Fashion Show, said: “ Fashion in Ireland is going from strength to strength as Irish women continue CONNECT MAGAZINE August 2014

AURA BEAUTY SALON 2014 marks the 10th anniversary of Aura Beauty Salon @ CH Chemists Tralee. To celebrate, the team hosted an open day where clients and future clients were invited to call in and receive free 10 minute massages, tanning application and make up demonstrations. “It was a huge success, a great turn out”, said Angela Curran, Aura salon manager. “We wanted to showcase our salon to the wider public and give the people visiting the store a treat. Who wouldn’t love that!!” Needless to say the team were inundated and the feedback from the customers was overwhelming. BENEFIT COSMETICS SUMMER LAUNCH AT CH
Steph Conway,Sandra O’Sullivan Elaine O’Hara and Siobhan Foley got to meet Mark Rogers at his Talk Over on Make Up on Thursday evening in CH Chemist Tralee.
MARK RODGERS - HEAD ARTIST WITH BENEFIT IRELAND So Mark with summer in full bloom and the sun shining brightly on all of us, can you tell us what the latest trends are for this summer? Summer my favourite time of year because the focus becomes all about the skin! At benefit we believe that a well hydrated dewy complexion is the ultimate accessory this season. I am addicted to our B.right raidant Skincare range which packa hydration punch! Then just a small amount of ,our bigger than a BB cream, big easy. It gives just enough coverage for the summer with an SPF 35 (WOW!) What does Benefit recommend for special occasion looks this year? Attending a wedding or that special race meeting what look do you recommend? I think for any occasion the most important elements to get right are the eyes . For the eyes this year it is all about the liner. We have just launched our They’re Real Push up line which is literally a god send. It is criminally easy to apply. For women who are terrified of liner this is the perfect liner for you. Perfect for the slim and natural liner look but you can take this all the way a full winged out wow. I think this is 2014 ‘s must have product of the year. Every woman should have this in their handbag at all times. Who knows when you will need to take your look from desktop to dancefloor. Are there any definite No No’s when applying your eyes? We often see the burnt look, how can we avoid that? Never use a bright coloured eyeshadow past the crease in the eye. Purple eyeshadow up to you eyebrows is not a good look however I do encourage everyone to embrace colour! Can you give us some tips on the ultimate look and how to apply the face properly? No woman should wear anything more than a medium cover age foundation. If you happen to have areas where you need ful coverage then you should use a concealer in those areas and a
medium coverage foundation everywhere else. You need to let your skin shine throung. Your make up shouldn’t act as a mask. With such a range of products available how do you know what’s right for you? Its simple ! Go get yourself to the nearest benefit counter and our benebabes will find the right products for you.

WHAT’S MAKING US FAT
AND KILLING US? Year by year we are getting fatter, obesity is on the rise along with type 2 diabetes. Along with this rise is the rise in sales of low fat products in shops and the abundance of quick fix products in every health store offering us that magic pill that will fix our problems. If any of these magic potions and low fat products actually worked for the benefit of our health why do we still struggle with weight and have an increase is disease. Today we are suffering from chronic fatigue, obesity on the rise, diabetes is reaching epidemic proportion, polycystic ovaries effecting many woman and also heart attacks and strokes. According to Irish heart foundation 2 out of every 5 adults -1 out of every 5 teenagers and 1 in every 10 kids 5-12 years are overweight. The number of people who die each year connected to obesity is approximately 2000. The truth is we have gotten lazier, looking for the easiest solution, convenience food, pre packed, pre prepared and ready for the microwave. I bet that if any of our readers go to the kitchen and open your press and fridge the most of you will find more packets and tins of manufactured processed foods filled with salt, sugar and trans fats (man made unsaturated fats created artificially) than fresh food with nothing added. We have turned the way we are meant to eat upside down. Instead of eating the way we evolved to
eat which is fresh meat and fish with naturally fats and in season fruits and veg. During the last 100 years we have gone from farm fresh, all natural food to a supply of highly processed food. Natural food has been sacrificed for convenience. We are eating low fat and high carbohydrate foods and we are getting heavier and unhealthier as a result. I don’t believe fat is the only problem and I certainly don’t believe low fat products is the answer. The price we pay for convenience is that nearly every convenience food is loaded with too much sugar (Carbohydrate) and when we eat sugar our body releases Insulin. Insulin’s job is to regulate the amount of sugar in our blood and guess what happens when we have too much? Insulin does a fantastic job storing the sugar we don’t need as fat until we do need it. This is all well and good but as long as we keep loading our body with too much sugar we will never need to use our fat reserves but we will continue to store the excess sugar as fat. Now I’m not saying all carbohydrate are bad, its perfectly ok to have moderate amount of carbs as long as they are in their natural form e.g. fruit and veg but its not ok to overload your body with too much and definitely not from manufactured processed products or we will continue to get bigger and increase the chance of getting seriously ill. Sugar (Carbohydrate) comes in many forms and it is in all processed foods, alcohol, pastries, pasta, rice, fruit, vegetables and much much more. Just look at the label of any food product and check how much carbs are from sugar added. Normally when fat is taken out of any product to make it low fat
● Obstetric (maternity care) ● Antenatal and parenting education ● Pediatric- with Dr Fergus Leahy ● Fertility and Shared Care Assisted Conception (IVF)
they will add sugar and Trans fats to add back in the flavour. My advices take it or leave it, if you would like to keep your body healthy for life. Don’t be afraid of fat as long as it’s natural and comes from meat, fish, butter, nuts, seeds etc products that have grown out side of a factory. Stay away from manufactured processed food with a long shelf life and that is loaded with ingredients you can’t pronounce or understand, they will only make you fat. If we were meant to live on processed foods I’m sure Mother Nature would have provided us with a ready meal tree. Please seek medical advice from a professional before starting any type of exercise or nutrition program.

What’s your STYLE?
Our top TIPS for your home interior:
Have you ever wanted to try something new but played it safe with neutrals just in case and never been happy with the result, it’s just not the wow you were looking for! Well, with our top tips we can give you the wow you want without the heart attack! 1 - Start with something you love Start with something that excites you and build your design from there. It could be a fabric, piece of furniture or a painting. You will find that this little step alone will make the decision process much easier. 2 - Keep it consistent Aim to keep the one style throughout the design. Whatever the style is make sure all the elements tie into that. 3 - Keep it out in the open I always advise clients to keep their samples together and somewhere you can see them everyday. This serves two purposes, you never know when inspiration can strike and while you are finalising the decorating you will learn if you will be able to live with the style and colours you have chosen or if it was a passing fad.
4 - Bring in colour Traditionally colour was a very daunting thing for most people but it really doesn’t have to be that way! You can bring colour in on the walls with paint or wallpaper or for those less adventurous bring in colour with your ornaments and soft furnishings. if you get sick of the colour down the road it wont cost a fortune to change some cushions and a rug!!
5 - Don’t be afraid to ask If there is something you are not sure of trust your gut or ask for advice. We provide a free in store consultation service! If you are asking friends and family just be aware of asking too many people as that can make it more confusing! Pick someone you trust and go for it!

Inside the Beauty Bag don’t want to splash out on the Clarasonic brush this is an excellent alternative as it’s a gentle fruit acid peel made from sugar cane and is the smallest of the AHA family. For my daily foundation I go between Buff HD foundation and Benefit’s Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow (honey) this is easily available and is a fantastic foundation for cover and natural look. I like to finish with another favourite of mine ‘Blank canvass contour palette’ and I love SLEEK blusher.
Do you like to highlight the eyes and lips to add the finishing touches?
This month we are delighted to meet the lovely Pippa O Connor. Model, Blogger, TV Personality and busy Mum to Ollie who has just turned one. She has her own website pippa.ie which is packed with lots of tips and ideas but she took time out from her busy schedule to tell us what she loves to have in her beauty bag
Pippa do you have a special cleansing ritual or certain products you love? Oh yes I think it’s so important to give the skin a good cleanse each morning to start it for the day. I just love the dermologica cleansers and moisturisers, I cleanse with DERMALOGICA

Special Cleansing Gel and I moisturise with Dermalogica’s Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF30. I like to use a clarins toner and again the eyes are so important I use Dermalogica’s Multi Vitamin Power Firm
What’s your secret tip to the fab clear looking skin you always have? I would highly recommend the Clarasonic skin care brush available in BT and although it’s pricey (@€200) I think it’s AMAZING for exfoliating the face. Also brilliant to minimise pores. I have also just got my hands on the Glycolic Neostrata treatment peel so for those who
Minimal eye make-up regime works best for me by day and I like a ‘Smokey’ look by night. Once I have groomed eyebrows and emphasised my lashes I’m good to go! I think the pigment in MAC lipsticks are the best and usually go for something nude by day but love ‘Girl About Town’ for a night time look
Have you any secret beauty tips for our readers? Oh indeed…..My main tips are to drink plenty of water with a drop of lemon and to invest in your moisturisers, foundations and SPF, Look after your skin always.

weardrobe ‘Shopping should be a pleasurable experience’ wise words from Sandra and her team at Weardrobe Tralee and Killarney. At Weardrobe the girls love nothing more than to help their customers put a look together and perhaps try something that they haven’t before. We caught up with the lady behind this fantastic brand that carries everyday clothing with a twist but can also provide something for that special occasion. Sandra tell us a little bit about Weardrobe its seems to be here forever, when did it all begin? Well having qualified as a fashion designer and worked in the fashion industry I felt the need to branch out and do something myself so in 1997 I opened my first shop in Tralee with my sister Moira. Quickly followed in 2000 with the birth of Killarney. What made you want to open the shop and why did you choose the brands and the look you have gone for in Weardrobe. Women think nothing of spending a small fortune on an outfit for a wedding that they will wear once (if ever) again…yet do not spend money on their everyday clothing. Your clothes make you feel good - Spend money on your everyday clothing – this is where we spend most of our time! At weardrobe we specialize in quality garments that can be dressed up or down depending on your occasion. Remember - The true value of anything you buy is the price you pay divided by the number of times you wear it! Don’t get caught up in the latest ‘fashion trends’ - be sure to ADAPT them to suit your body shape. A bug bear of mine is that In Ireland we do high glamour so well… and then we do the tracksuit.
Tell us abit about yourself Sandra and your background as we clearly see your passion for the industry. Well I always had a love of fashion and I practically grew up in my family’s Dry Cleaning business (Rusk Dry Cleaners, now in Boherbee) where I learnt all about fabrics. , I qualified as a fashion designer - Graduate of the Cork College of Fashion Design 1991, my work experience included Penney’s where I worked in Tralee, Naas, Newbridge, Artane, Dundrum, Dundalk and Galway stores and finally in the Buying office in Mary street Dublin! I also worked with Irish Group Carrig Donn where I worked as manager of the flagship store in Westport and as Senior Buyer for the group before leaving to set up weardrobe. I trained with ‘The Image House’ in London as a colour analyst and image consultant. (In fact all of the staff in Weardrobe has a very good understanding of colour analysis.) This I feel is vital in the fashion business. Can you tell us about the upcoming season, any brands you are really excited about bringing to the ladies of Kerry? Lots of beautiful collections due in from Isabel de Pedro, Sandwich, Part Two and Mexx but I have to say I am really looking forward to receiving Irish Designer Liz Quin’s (formerly of Quin & Donnelly) new collection in mid to late September. We really missed Quin & Donnelly and were sad to see it finish in 2011.I have seen Liz’s collection and she still has beautiful tailoring, great fit, luxurious, vibrant fabrics with her unique design twist. The collection has a fashionable designer edge without the big spend. So Ladies you’re in safe hands with weardrobe – these girls know their stuff when it comes to dressing you! I would definitely recommend that you to follow Wardrobes very active facebook page – it’s a great way to keep track of what’s happening in-store.

Rose Ball Fashion
Well Friday 15th is this year’s date for the biggest social event in Tralee and beyond! The Kerrygold International Rose Ball will take place in the world famous dome and I know that every fashionista in Kerry will be in attendance. This year there will be approximately 800 people in attendance and for many it is the highlight of their social calendar. The Rose Ball allows us to see all of the carefully selected 32 Roses in their stunning ball gowns and I have no doubt that each one of them will do their centres proud. Red is always a popular colour for the candidates and I would nearly place a bet that this will be the same this year. While I know that us ladies sometimes get a little peeved when we compare the little preparation that our menfolk get away with I think we also appreciate that for one night only we are surrounded by our very own OO7’s. The 32 escorts will also be there looking dapper I am sure. Speaking of preparation gals I know that for a night like this you need to start the beauty and fashion regime days in advance. On the beauty side, exfoliate with a good exfoliating scrub three days before the big night. Have your tan done professionally, I personally love the natural look tan that Expose Beauty use. Kate and her team are also incredible at lash extensions so why not have them applied this year?

Closer to home Jasmine Tralee and Killarney is well worth a visit and having seen the amazing creations at a recent fashion show, I know that you will be not disappointed. On the day itself, take the time to get the hair and make up done and make sure that you have a big lunch as these nights tend to be long with lots of champers and wine consumed. Our favourite Kerry presenter Daithi O’Se will be there as will the King of Fashion, Ballyheigue native Don O’Neill who I am sure will see some of his Theia creations worn on the night. HOPE THE SUN IS STILL SHINING FOR YOU. IT MIGHT SEEM STRANGE AS WE ARE STILL IN THE SUMMER BUT THIS MONTH I AM GOING TO BE DISCUSSING AUTUMN/WINTER TRENDS FOR 2014. Two of Kerry’s major fashion events Kerry Fashion Week and the Rose of Tralee fashion show provide us lucky Kerry people with an opportunity to preview the coming seasons hottest trends fashions and must-haves both from our stylish boutiques and talented designers. I don’t wish to spoil the show, but I want to share some insider information from my travels to various fashion weeks on what to expect this autumn. One of the big trends is the “cosy” dressing style favoured by designers. This translates to comfortable and very wearable items from casual to dressy. It is reflected in the texture of the materials used from “touch me” blanket coats to luxurious imitation furs. I am a big fan of this fashion as it suits all shapes and sizes and being comfortable in something means you will feel more confident in it. Velvet has been bubbling away under the surface for the last few autumns, but will be making a big comeback this year. With solid colours such as royal blue, smouldering red and shimmering black and lengths just skimming the ankles. This will also include accessories for example scarves Although prints are going nowhere next season, block colours such as black, grey, brown, wine and winter white will be infused with vibrant splashes of colour. This will allow for individual interpretations and preferences, and let us all be as colourful as we choose. There are several more trends going to emerge for autumn/winter but I believe these ones are going to be around for a good while, with the perfect mix of present, past and future making them all modern classics for us to wear again and again. Enjoy the rest of the summer and make sure to take some time out to appreciate the pale moon rising above the green mountains and the sun declining beneath the blue sea. Tooth Whitening Fáilte romhaibh thar nais! Tooth whitening has become very popular in Ireland in the last 15 years or so. Until recently it was not regulated, which meant it was open to abuse. Thankfully, since October 2012, regulations now exist to protect patients. The Dental Council and Irish Medicines Board have issued guidelines which comply with EU laws. In Ireland tooth whitening can only be carried out by a registered dentist. Hydrogen Peroxide is the active ingredient in whitening gel. Tooth whitening products containing less than 0.1% hydrogen peroxide can be sold directly to patients. If the hydrogen peroxide is between 0.1% and 6%, it can only be sold by a dentist. The dentist must show the patient how to use the gel during their dental visit. The patient can then continue to use the product safely at home over a number of days. Products with more than 6% hydrogen peroxide are considered unsafe for use, due to possible toxic effects. The process should start with a dental examination with your dentist. Tooth whitening should only be considered in a healthy mouth, i.e. no tooth decay, gum disease or other pathology/diseases present. If all is healthy, moulds/impressions of the mouth may be taken and sent to a dental laboratory to make bleaching trays. When made, these trays fit over the teeth and hold the whitening gel in place. The newer gels need only 30 minutes of use each day, and can be stored at room temperature. The dentist must instruct the patient in the safe use of the whitening gels. It must be noted that whitening gel can only whiten natural tooth enamel. It will not whiten fillings, crowns or dentures and cannot be used on a person under 18 years of age. Hydrogen peroxide can be present or released by other whitening products e.g. carbamide peroxide, whose maximum allowed concentration is 17% in Ireland. The dentist’s supervision is for patient safety. It means that the
dentist will make a tray that fits properly to the patient’s mouth and they will make sure that the patient has the ability to seat the tray properly on the teeth. The dentist should teach the patient how to properly load the trays with whitening gel. During the period of whitening, alcohol or tobacco products should not be used as they may exacerbate the possible toxic effects of hydrogen peroxide. Weak teeth that are sensitive are not very suitable for whitening. The sensitivity should be eliminated with a suitable gel or high fluoride toothpaste before using whitening gels. Tooth whitening gels with hydrogen peroxide present or released, are a great advance in modern dentistry. It should not be treated casually. It is a product that needs to be treated with due care and attention. The regulations are there for the protection of patients. It has often been used to give that wow effect. INTRODUCING GLUTEN TO YOUR BABY’S DIET ‘By Therese Dunne paediatric dietitian in Fuchsia Medical Centre, Tralee and formerly in Temple Street Children’s Hospital’ Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley and oats. Gluten is found in many foods including flour, bread, pasta and breakf ast cereals. Introducing gluten too early i.e. before four months of age or too late i.e. after 7 months of age increases your baby’s risk of developing coeliac disease. Babies exposed to gluten in the first 3 months of life have a five times greater risk of developing coeliac disease. From 1982 parents in Sweden were advised to delay the introduction of gluten until after 6 months of age. Between 1982 and 1995 the incidence of coeliac disease in Sweden doubled.
WHEN SHOULD GLUTEN BE INTRODUCED? Introduce very small amounts of gluten close to 6 months of age. Introducing gluten to your baby’s diet while still breast feeding offers extra protection against developing coeliac disease. Under no circumstances should gluten be introduced before four months of age. HOW BEST TO INTRODUCE GLUTEN TO YOUR BABY’S DIET? Week 1 One portion of gluten- containing food every 3 days Week 2 One portion of gluten-containing food every 2 days Week 3 One portion of gluten containing food every day Week 4 Gluten containing-food can be given to your baby every day and more than once a day if desired WHAT IS ONE PORTION OF GLUTEN? 5 – 6 level teaspoons of gluten containing baby cereal made with milk or ½ slice of white sliced pan or ½ Weetabix or 1 Rusk or 1 heaped teaspoon of couscous or 2 – 3 cooked pasta shapes

Legal Compliance Bring your own device In the policy employees should be informed that any personal device used by an employee for work purposes should be listed with the company. Remind employees of the issues that may occur if they mistakenly use their personal email. This could lead to e mails not including the appropriate legal disclaimers usually included in work emails. Many employees are now using their own electronic devices for work purposes. This can have many benefits but employers should make themselves aware of any risks before allowing their employees to bring their own device to work.
Implement a social media policy and review other related security policies to reduce risk. The social media policy should outline what access is authorised during working hours and should apply to personal devices if they are been used for work, as well as work devices.
If a company introduces the use of personal devices for work it is important that employers draft a BYOD policy. It is important to set out a clear and wellpublicised policy to inform employees of their responsibilities and expectations for privacy. Keep the following in mind when drafting your tailored company policy:
When employees are using their personal device for work they will inevitably combine personal and company information. It is important to ensure that the Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) is adhered to and that suitable measures are adopted to keep personal data secure
by preventing unauthorised or unlawful processing of personal data or accidental loss of personal data. Employers should include provisions for the ownership and control of company information, how data security will be managed, and outline the procedures for when employees leave the employment of the company or what should happen if devices are lost or stolen. If you require any assistance with implementing a BYOD policy in your company please do not hesitate to contact one of our HR Advisors in The HR Suite.

Kerry People Stimulate Savings and Are Paying Loans Back Quicker
Kerry people have been saving their pennies and are paying off their loans quicker, Killorglin Credit Union Manager, Pat Duffy said today. The first signs of economic recovery have stimulated consumer confidence and the Credit Union has seen an increase in members saving more. The impact on family finances that had been hit by the recession was overwhelming. However 22

Pat Duffy, Manager of Killorglin Credit Union believes that this is changing “We have more members saving who now have an opportunity to put these savings against a Home Improvement Loan which we are now offering at 7.8% APR. People had been putting off home improvements and vital jobs they needed to get done around the home because of a reluctance to borrow in the recession
and the attitude of some financial institutions towards loan approval.” In the 5th annual RepTrak 2014 study based on consumer ratings while the financial sector still receives the cold shoulder from consumers, the Irish League of Credit Unions received the award for having the best reputation in the financial services category. Pat Duffy, Manager of Killorglin Credit Union commented, “Our members come to us because the Credit Union has always been based on trust and community and growing the wellbeing of our members. We believe that our members are in a far better position to apply for a loan than they have been in recent years.” Small community based Credit Unions have endured their own suffering throughout the recession times with some members not being able to make loan repayments and reductions in assets but have weathered this with service and consistency. With actions speaking louder than words the Credit Union is still the community’s preferred place to do business.

FROM LITTLE GIRL TO WOMAN - Dealing with the changes As signs of adult body changes occur for girls this should be a happy and proud time. However, for some young girls the changes aren’t always seamless. Understanding what is happening can make things easier.
find the onset of periods inconvenient but a chat can sometimes help to devise a strategy. Equally a very irregular menstrual can be a marker for disorders such a PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). It is important to deal with such problems if they persist for long periods. Excessive exercising or extreme weight changes can also have an impact on hormones and menstrual cycles.
Because of our improved nutrition girls now start their periods much younger; this can happen as young as 9 but the average age is about 12.5 years. Before a girl’s periods commence she will have noticed her breasts are growing and adult body hair appears. The female hormones will subtly create changes in body shape and, even vaginal secretions increase. All in all-forewarned is forearmed and providing good information can take the fears out of what is happening. The pressures to be the “same as everyone” can cause its own problems. Young girls see pictures in magazines of small or big breasts and can be confused about what is normal. They overhear adults talking about body shape and all of this can be confusing. It is important for young girls to have a female adult that they are comfortable discussing their concerns with.
Periods-what is normal?
Girls should understand that a period can vary in terms of pain and the amount of blood passed. In general, a period should not be excessively heavy. Yes there may be cramping but if it requires more than some paracetamol it may be prudent to seek medical advice. In the first year the cycle can be irregular- there are many smartphone apps which provide good advice and are a way of plotting periods. If periods are very heavy i.e. leaking through a young girl’s clothes this can be distressing. A chat with their mum or a GP or practice nurse can help to judge what is normal or abnormal. It is uncommon for teenagers to suffer from conditions such as endometriosis. There are occasions when hormonal treatments or Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory (NSAIDs) can help. It can also be reassuring to have an ultrasound scan or series of hormonal blood tests. Young girls who are very involved in sport can

PCOS in Adolescence
Irregular periods Acne Excess body/facial hair Difficulties with increased weight
The condition is extremely common, occurring in at least 1:10 girls. As many of the symptoms such as acne can impact on a young girl’s appearance, it is scientifically proven that the condition affects self-esteem and psychological health. There are many simple lifestyle strategies to reverse the physical problemsthese include dietary changes and weight adjustments. Occasionally we use very mild Pills to reverse hormonal changes. If severe acne or facial hair is not tackled at an early stage they can create permanent physical scarring. The teenage years are the ideal time to manage PCOS so professional help should be sought; particularly as the condition can have a significant impact on psychological health.

Body Image and Appearances
Sadly, our social media portrays quite a skewed image of what is acceptable in 21st century women. Many young girls succumb to eating disorders in an effort to be thin. Even body hair is less acceptable nowadays. Another pattern emerging in recent years is the belief that vaginal secretions are unacceptable. I cannot reiterate enough the importance of young girls having a knowledgeable adult to confide in; sadly many of these fears can go on to cause unnecessary fears and concerns about being abnormal. Being able to spend a few minutes every weeks checking to see how they are getting along can help. Using proper terminology to describe our bodies rather than words such as “the curse” to describe periods can help to take away negative feelings that can persist for the rest of their lives.
Becoming Sexually Active
Young people are now sexually active at a younger age than in our day. It is important that they don’t feel pressurised but feel able to wait until the time is right. It is also important that they have knowledge to avoid Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) and pregnancy.

HATERS typically, as an Irish Nation, we seem to look to the negatives. Or it just seems like some people have a life mission to put others down. these kind of people, are known as “the haters” in some social media circles and “the trolls” in others. with the hope of keeping this as “politically correct” as possible, I think I will leave the term “trolls” for the mythical creatures… If you are lucky enough to have not experienced any haters, let me give you the insight.
But the thing is, you can stop the haters. something that I didn’t believe until recently.
Haters are everywHere.
Until I actually started to be me. So yes, I wear what I want now and, shockingly, I even walk into town with my mom when I want too. All because I realised the wonderfully odd saying of “haters gonna hate” is actually true. Because truthfully, it doesn’t matter what you do to try to convince the haters that you are actually normal, they will always find something to criticise you for.
They are the people who prevent me from being myself. They dictate what I wear, how I act and everything that comes in between. Why do I listen or why do I even care? It’s this little disease that most people tend to have raging through their systems. It’s called “trying to fit in” and it kills. This is the disease that the haters thrive on. You step one toe out of line and they pounce. The worst thing for me is that I am genuinely afraid to walk into town by myself for fear of the “look”. This look literally makes me feel like I am nothing. Like I am the most insignificant human being on the planet for ever wanting to be myself. For ever wanting to go into town in a dress or hang out with my mom. I have even planned out an odd regime for myself so that I can try to avoid the people that brew this negativity, and when I find myself stepping out of that safe timezone, I am a ball of nerves until I can crawl back under the rock where they have sentenced me to live.
scared yet?
Fearing that you are one of these haters? Because if you ever ridicule someone for being “different” or give them that “look” that couldn’t make them feel worse, you are no better. The world is full of cutting comments and killing looks that could make anyone feel like scum.
You just need to realise that no matter what you do, it will never be enough for these people. And then you just need to take that high road and be above them.
Because believe me, those haters will never be able to see beyond the negativity that traps them in that state of mind. Don’t give them the satisfaction, do what you want and be yourself. They are still going to look at you with those judgy little eyes, but you just have to look back at them with the air if a queen and show them what they are missing on the path of individuality. Or you could just tell them to go f…. Right politically correct Zoe, politically correct… Until next month . . . stay true to your own self

My ultimate mission and passion is to help woman help themselves achieve a better life through exercise, nutritionist and a healthy mind and by education we can empower woman to not only help themselves but also their families. I am a qualified Biochemist and after graduating in UCC I worked as a medical rep before going to Australia for ten years where I had many jobs before finding Curves. I was fortunate enough to be trained in the global head office in Waco Texas and was exposed to all their Bayler University findings and worked extensively with Curves in Florida for over two years before returning home. I have great empathy with people as I have been on my own weight loss journey. I am forever learning and firmly believe with improving our health there is no finish line, and I want to help women to live and not just exist. HORSE & PONY RACING TO RETURN TO BALLYBEGGAN PARK FOR 2014 ROSE OF TRALEE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
IT’S been six years since punters could enjoy horse racing during the Rose of Tralee International Festival, but there’s good news for race-goers because Ballybeggan Park will host the Kerry International Horse and Pony Racing Championship in August.
established in 1959 with a view to boosting attendances at the horse racing while attracting tourists. This year’s revival of the sport in Tralee during August should prove to a great spectacle where runners will compete from all over Ireland and also from across the water.”
Tralee Chamber Alliance has announced that the action-packed, fun-filled and family-friendly two day event will take place at the famous Tralee venue on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th August.
The two day event will see top class racing under the rules of the Horse and Pony Racing Association with cast weights applying.
The CEO of Tralee Chamber Alliance, Kieran Ruttledge, said: “Horse racing and the Rose of Tralee International Festival go hand-in-glove as the Festival was originally

and Richard Hughes, Pat Smullen, Jamie Spencer and MJ Kinane on the flat. The organiser of the event, Colm O’Connor, said: “Horse and pony racing is where these people learned to ply their trade from an early age and this has helped them in no small way once they made the transition from outside to inside the rails and realising their dreams and ambitions of becoming top class jockeys. There will be a number of categories on the race card during the Ballybeggan event on the 16th and 17th August to suit ponies of varying heights and varying distances up to two miles for the horses.” Saturday 16th August is Ladies Day while anyone planning to go racing at Ballybeggan during this year’s Rose of Tralee International Festival will be spoiled for choice with a quality race card, full catering facilities and numerous entertaining side-shows for all ages. CONNECT BOOK CLUB Introducing you to some more exciting titles this month from our Book Club Editor Kathy Cronin. If you have a particular book you would like to recommend to our readers email us info@connectpublications.ie
“The Road” by Cormac McCarthy “The Road” by Cormac McCarthy is an intriguing literature classic. Beneath a hard layer of charred, grey, post-apocalyptic hardship is a raw, bleeding sense of humanity. Detailing the journey through land scattered with the dead, characters known simply as “The Man” and “The Boy” travel on through sickness, looming death, and the constant threat of the blood cults. I finished reading this in twenty-four hours, because of a plot that kept me turning pages. This is a novel for the science-fiction fans among us, but I would recommend that everybody reads this masterpiece at least once!
“The Eyes of the Dragon” by Stephen King “The Eyes of the Dragon” by Stephen King was a step away from King’s usual tales of horror. Instead, he gives us a fantasy work that is both classic and original at the same time. This tale of royalty, dragons, magic, and a battle between good and evil, may sound like something written exclusively for children, but I only read it two weeks ago, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. This work is a good introduction to Stephen King’s work, as while it is not his usual genre, it is easier to read than his horror stories. A great story for teenagers and adults alike!
“Haunted” by Chuck Palahniuk “Haunted” by Chuck Palahniuk is one of the most disturbing, gruesome, terrible, brilliant books that I have ever had the fortune/misfortune of reading. This is a collection of short stories that you will not read to your children, but to yourself, as you shudder with revulsion and resist the urge to throw the book away from you, and never, ever open it again. These short stories, all tied together by one main plot, are imaginative, traumatising and truly disgusting in places, each one featuring a different character from the story. Disclaimer – I will not be held responsible for any psychological damage caused!
