The lady behind

THE KERRY FASHION WEEK KFW is the Brainchild of Orla Diffily and is now jointly organised by UP FRONT Event and Model Management and Midpoint Creative. She created Upfront PR 1995, and has since gone on to develop the business to incorporate Upfront Model Management which is now recognized as one of the leading Model Agencies in Munster. Her Specialties are Public Relations Planning and Campaigns (consumer, hospitality and fashion), Media Relations, press launches, photo calls, crisis PR, Excellent verbal and written communications skills, Management of Press Office, to name just a few, and when you meet Orla you can be assured that your business is secure and will get the best possible coverage in her capable reign. Asking Orla about Kerry Fashion Week she tells us that the original idea was born in 2008 during a conversation in the office with herself and a few members of team Upfront, The planning began and now KFW in association with IMAGE Magazine is the social highlight of the Calendar Orla is an amazing person to promote local talent and lots of new milliners, designers and the likes have been discovered because of Orla and KFW. The agency has recently won some awards in the industry but this does not mean that Orla will sit back and rest on her laurels in fact the opposite it gives her more drive and determination to strive on to do more. So a bit about Orla at home, well as the saying goes behind every good man and all that... Orla has an amazing team at home , her husband Barry (pictured here with her) is a talented photographer that can capture the perfect moment in any situation, his work has been featured in Vogue, Social and Personal and the Sunday Times Magazine to name a few, he is passionate about his work and this reflects on the finished product if you see his work, he enjoys down time in his home in Killarney and loves to take the odd trip down the road to the local to catch up with friends. Zoe Orlas daughter at just 15 she is wise beyond her years in the industry, under the professional guidance of Mum Orla Zoe has cut her teeth in the industry and can be seen at many an event ‘clipboard in hand’ producing amazing shows, she recently won Editors Choice award at The Hi Magazine Style Awards for her upcoming blogging and coverage of events that she attends, You will see some of her work later on in this issue and I am sure you will agree its excellent. So all in all an amazing team this trio, professional, capable and most of all great fun to be around.

Joan Freeman

CEO and Founder of Pieta House

Pieta House Opens is Castleisland How did pieta House begin? What services are available at the house?

Pieta House began in response to a gap in services. It opened its door in January 2006 in Lucan. We provide one to one, face to face therapy for people who have attempted suicide but survived, those who have a strong urge to take their lives and those who engage in self-harming behaviours.

Why establish it in the first place, with the vast numbers of counselling services and the likes what makes pieta house different? Our professional service is free of charge, no GP letter is required and anyone can make an appointet.

How many staff are involved in the running of it and how many branches are now developed? We have 9 centres nationwide with a staff of 170 people

How is it funded and in these past few years as funds tightened is it harder to get funding or voluntary support? 90% of our funding comes from the general public, we receive 10% from the government. We find the generosity of people extraordinary

Why chose Castleisland as a base?

It’s the most central place for access in Kerry

Do you feel more could be done at a younger age to prepare kids growing up for what’s ahead thus reducing the rising numbers of suicide and self harm? Yes, children from as young as 4 or 5 should be taught how to cope with life issues

Is there a typical type of person or do you meet many different varieties coming to the house for help?

We have seen children as young as 6 to people in their 80’s. Everybody is different – their one common denominator is distress and despair

Pieta House has been nominated for many awards, what do you attribute this success to? To a genuine hunger to help people in our community

How can people contact Pieta whether to get some advice or to maybe volunteer support ?

They can visit our website www.pieta.ie or telephone or branch in Castleisland 066 7163660

ON TRACK

GET BACK New years resolutions now might seem like a distant memory. All those great intensions we had at the start of the year slipping away and some of us gradually starting back to our old ways of skipping training and eating unhealthy food. Before we know it weight starts to creep back on and our clothes start to feel a little tighter each day, feeling demotivated and annoyed with ourselves we give into all the temptations and we’re back to where we started.Im here to tell you it doesn’t have to be that way.Health and fitness is on the rise with so many options out there.Maybe you just haven’t found that one thing, that type of exercise to make you want to come back for more. You can’t walk into a shop, supermarket or even turn on your TV without being bombarded with clubs and fitness classes being advertised. Everybody has the opportunity to train weather you want to join a gym, your local fitness class or even go it alone from the comfort of your own home. Each option of exercise has specific benefits from the fantastic feeling of being fit to camaraderie of training with a group. If you are getting bored with the type of training you are doing than why not change the type of training you do rather than given up. Try something new or treat yourself to some new exercise equipment that can be used from home. Home equipment can be as cheap or as expensive as you want it to be. Whatever your choice always incorporate strength training and cardio into your workout. These types of training can be done on the same day or separate days. Strength and cardio training can be done using your own bodyweight or adding equipment like kettlebells, dumbbells, suspension training, bicycle or treadmills

to name a few. This type of training can be done from home or with a group class but if you are not familiar with any of this training than make sure you get professional advice. If training with equipment is not for you than body weight work can be very effective. You can mix some strength and cardio exercises to form a circuit style workout at home with very little space needed.

HERE IS A SAMPLE WORKOUT YOU CAN DO FROM HOME WITH NO EQUIPMENT NEEDED 1. Pushups 2.jumping jacks 3.squats 4.mountain climbers 5.dips of a chair 6.jogging on the spot 7.sit ups 8. Plank 9. -10. Back raise. Do each exercise once for 20sec-60sec depending on fitness level. Time each exercise and when completed move to the next until all are completed. Once the circuit has being completed you can repeat the same sequence either increasing or decreasing your time per exercise depending on your fitness level. Keep track of your progress and either try and match or beat your workout. This type of training is extremely effective for increasing your fitness level, muscle strength and endurance. Please seek medical advice from a professional before starting any type of exercise or nutrition program. Welcome to Connect Fashion Fix Each month we will be giving you tips and advice on what’s hot and what’s not in the style stakes, and who better to send out and about on the streets of the county than Kerry’s leading Stylish Lady the lovely Orlagh Winters, Orlagh will be taking a trip around Kerry monthly to find the latest looks and some new ideas when it comes to fashion, Advice and tips on dressing for that special

occasion or maybe just hitting town at the weekend but no idea what to wear, well look no further, Thankfully the time has come to pack away the winter woollies and lock the wellington boots in the nearest available trunk with a very strong padlock. We need to embrace our inner angel and don the crisp clean shades of white. According to every fashionista in the world the hottest colour to be seen in this Spring/ Summer is white. The rule is to keep it sharp, simple and sophisticated. Thankfully with the array of boutiques available in Kerry, this is going to be an easier task than one may think. Personally I have to admit that white scares me! Why? The skinny jeans trend was hard enough to carry off but how in the name of God will this work in what I believed to be be an unforgiving colour? The truth is I was wrong to believe this and now I know having browsed through various shops that skinny whites are indeed our friend. Paco have a wonderful pair of white jeans/ trousers available at €30.00 that suit all shapes and sizes. Their new store located at The Mall Tralee has an array of bright beautiful colours that compliment the white trend. I had the pleasure of been looked after by Fiona and her team who are a breath of fresh air to pop into, the day outside might be dull and dreary but the atmosphere inside is bright fresh and lots of fun, the collection this spring is perfect for those long summer days we are all looking forward to. Plus size ladies also have the opportunity to share the trend and the curvy ladies are spoilt for choice as always by Danny Leane at Annuburys in Central Plaza Tralee. Danny always puts his vast knowledge into buying a wonderful collection for the plus size gals. At all the recent fashion shows in the Kerry region the audiences were wowed with the up to the minute styles available. The colors available this spring are fresh and vibrant and the collection of cool and chic coordinates will no doubt ensure you are dressed to impress for any occasion. With over 75 years experience in the fashion business Hannons of Castleisland are a must see when it comes to planning your Spring/Summer wardrobe. If it’s a casual or formal look to be bang on trend then look no further than this stalwart fashion house. Jill and the girls will dress you for any occasion and now with the new OUI collection there is a fantastic range of casual co-ordinates. Definetly worth a visit.

BEST FOOT FORWARD! While we all dread getting the toes out after months of hibernation nothing cheers us up more than buying our first pair of sandals or peep toes for the season. Footprints of Listowel really have an amazing eye for the needs of our precious feet and we the women of Kerry will be eternally grateful to them for this. If it is a wedge or a kitten heel for everyday wear or that special occasion then a visit to Listowel is a must. Walsh Brothers Shoes of Tralee and Killarney a name for shoes for many decades now have a lovely selection of footwear and accessories from the Orla Kiely collection, the eycatching window display of colour makes us all long for those summer evenings ahead. Finally for this month’s trip to the shops I had all these beautiful clothes but needed some bling and finishing touches so I popped to see Carmel in That’s Perfect the mall Tralee, with the range of casual scarves, bags and bling to the matching shoe / bag collection for weddings or special occasions Carmel can complete any outfit for you so make sure and include a trip here on your day out. So folks until next month happy shopping...

Orlagh.

HI AND WELCOME TO CONNECT CURVES, EACH MONTH WE WILL GETTING TOP TIPS FOR THE FULLER FIGURE FROM OUR RESIDENT STYLIST DANNY LEANE, DANNY RUNS THE VERY SUCCESSFUL ANNBURYS BOUTIQUE IN THE PLAZA TRALEE, AND STOCKING FORM SIZE 12-30 HAS A STYLE TO SUIT EVERYONE, SO WHAT MAKES ANNBURYS POPULAR, IT’S THE PERSONAL ATTENTION FROM DANNY AND THE TEAM SO WE ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME DANNY WITH TIPS AND ADVICE EACH MONTH. IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS FOR DANNY FEEL FREE TO EMAIL INFO@CONNECTPUBLICATIONS.IE OR DANNY@ANNBURYS.COM Hi Everyone, As springtime has finally sprung, we can turn our attention to all the spring colours among us .the beautiful bright yellows, blues and greens of the season are reflected in the new fashions. Wearing colours can be a daunting task especially for a curvaceous lady, but any colour can be flattering as long as you stick to a cut that suits your shape. Until you feel more comfortable with wearing an outfit in full colour, try dipping your toe by adding colour with your accessories, a scraf, handbag or shoes in a vibrant colour can transform an outfit. But please be careful with shoes, as it is very easy to shorten the leg rather than elongate them by your choice of footwear. If you are wearing dark trousers keep the shoes a similar colour. With a dress or skirt add a coloured shoe to achieve that leggylook. The bright pinks and more subtle corals are all in for spring /summer and look great teamed with a classic white jeans or linen pants. If your problem areas are in the upper body then keep the darker colour on top advice versa if your bottom half is heavier, As mentioned earlier, cut is everything, never judge a book by its cover and never judge a dress by its hanger - you must try on!!!, something can look totally different on the hanger or mannequin and all it needs is your fabulous curves to bring it alive. Prints are another good way of injecting colour into your wardrobe and enhancing you’re aassets, one of the hottest trends for 2014, is “Art ATTACK” a subtle brush stroke that gives a bold but delicate design. This has been seen on catwalks in Paris, New York and Berlin and transferred to the high street. I hope this has been of some help to you all and inspired you to bring more colour to your life . Happy shopping till next time Kind Regards Danny danny@annburys.com

Helen Wilson, Chairperson, Derrynane In-Shore Rescue commented On behalf of Derrynane In-Shore Rescue, I want to thank everyone involved in organising and running such a successful and entertaining evening. The cost of running a unit, even as small as Derrynane, is in the region of €13,000 a year, and that is before replacing equipment and training. So the monies raised on the evening will go directly towards funding the unit going forward. Thanks in particular to the Nicola Duggan and Louis Moriarty of the Sneem Hotel, all the models, hair and make up teams and our own committee for all their hard work.” For more information Derrynane In shore Rescue, visit their Facebook page.

So you want publicity for your brand? Then - be professional, write like a journalist and think like a reader. I have been working as a professional PR practitioner for over 25 years and, despite the changing media landscape, the question I get asked the most is . . . ‘How can I get into the papers”? Normally I am asked this, after the individual or company has made several unsuccessful attempts to secure coverage for their brand / company / themselves!. So if you want to secure positive PR / publicity, you need to do the following ... 1. BE PROFESSIONAL Public Relations - (PR) is reputation management. One of the ways you can build the reputation of your brand, is by securing positive publicity. As everything you do represents your brand, you must approach this professionally. The first step is to research the media and their audiences. Identify which media communicates with your target customers / publics and then devise your PR strategy. The next step is to learn how to write the perfect news release. (More about this below) Then visualize it . . . It always helps to illustrate a story - and sometimes a clever photograph can bump up the news value of an otherwise dull story. As the cliche goes . . . a good photograph is worth a thousand words. But, also note that badly taken photographs just say you don’t know what you are doing or, worse, don’t care how you visually communicate your brand. So my best advice is to switch off your i-phone (or the ‘expensive’ camera you bought in Duty Free) and hire a professional press photographer. Remember also

that photographs are no longer limited to print media, as now on line news sites, blogs, social media as well as most radio stations, TV channels require quality imagery. 2. WRITE LIKE A JOURNALIST Learn how to write a good news release. The key word here is ‘news’. It is essential that you put your news in easy to understand language, in the opening sentence of the release. Who, what, where, why, when and how. All in the first two lines. Then give contact details on your brand/event. Other information, such as quotations from company personnel, background information, should be supplied if relevant, but it is best to be succinct, relevant and ideally under 500 words. Although we all do . . . it’s best practice not to use un-necessary adjectives (fabulous, amazing, sensational etc) and it is essential you are accurate, truthful and can spell! Lastly give contact details in case the journalist needs more information/clarification or an interview. 3. THINK LIKE A READER Newspapers do not exist to print news releases or give free publicity ! They are reader focussed - so you need to be also. Ask yourself what would the reader be interested in? Obviously readers of different publications / sites have different interests, so you need to create angles and tailor your news accordingly if you wish to secure coverage.

KERRY BUSINESSWOMENS NETWORK CELEBRATE INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2014 new customers and can play a critical part in revenue growth for almost any enterprise”. The audience then had an opportunity to interact through Q&A with Susan, Breda, and the team, which lead to great open floor discussion with lots of small business getting the opportunity to query issues they may have in relation to their own business or one which they intend to start in the near future. Etsy-International multimillion Euro global companies, was next up to show us how it’s done. Etsy’s very own Zane Selkirk, head of International Operations was present to cover her presentation called “Online Business and Getting It Right”. We got to speak with Zane so you will see the exclusive interview here in this feature. On Friday March 7th Kerry Business women’s Network in association with the Institute of Technology Tralee hosted a half day seminar “Getting your business on line”. The event which was open to both male and female audience saw nearly 200 attend on the day. The aim was to highlight the importance of having a website, particularly if you are selling goods or services. Online sales and the power of social media cannot be underestimated and more and more businesses are beginning to realise the power of the web. Liz Maher, KBN, says “we wanted to show how online customers whether they are local or global, can become the backbone of any Kerry business”. Minister for Small Business, John Perry opened the event at 9:30 and Susan Hayes, positive economist and author of “The Savvy Guide to making Money” gave an excellent and engaging presentation on “Savvy Online revenue streams”. Susan believes that we need to look further afield to bring in that extra much needed revenue. Even though we all try to shop local, with rising taxes and utility bills, passing trade or word of mouth business is not enough to keep the business door open. It’s time to open up to a whole new world. Breda O Dwyer lead manager of CEED 20

CONNECT BUSINESS MEETS POSITIVE ECONOMIST SUSAN HAYES Susan Hayes was one of the Key speakers at the KBN Event on March 7th at Tralee IT, Susan spoke to the delegates in attendance with a very direct approach to looking out for their business, we decided to catch up after and ask her a bit about herself and her thoughts to the economics of the country at present but we also wanted people to get to know the real Susan too, as we brought away some very interesting tips from her talk , but what we got most was the infectious passion she has for life and everyday business, she is a get up and go lady who can call it like it is, a pleasure to listen to. TELL US A BIT ABOUT SUSAN HAYES? I was born and reared in a village called Dripsey, near Macroom in Cork and grew up there as the eldest of two. I always wanted to run a business; as a child I used to run a travel agency with my imagination and my teddies as my clients! I went on to study financial maths and economics in NUI Galway where I joined the Business Society. It so happened that I met my first employer (a stock market training company called GillenMarkets) through the group and that had a dramatic impact on my career’s direction. Up until then, I had intended becoming an actuary but then I deviated into the world of training and education. After five years of working with them, I set up Hayes Culleton Ltd in 2010 with Ardle Culleton who I married just under two months ago.

WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO CHOOSING THE PATH YOU DID TO BECOME AN ECONOMIST? I studied everything with a number in it for my Leaving Cert; accounting, honours maths, applied maths, physics and chemistry. Therefore when it came to picking my course in college, I really liked the outlines of actuary in UCD, mathematical sciences in UCC and financial maths and economics in NUI Galway. However, I was conscious that I was very young and in order to give myself the best platform, I decided to opt for a wider course and specialise after. My experience in Galway lent itself in the direction of financial economics which is an interaction between the financial markets and economics.

YOU ARE WIDELY KNOWN AS THE POSITIVE ECONOMIST- WOULD YOU LIKE TO TELL US HOW YOU FEEL ABOUT THIS TITLE? I love it! My interpretation of “The Positive Economist” is that I always, always focus on what you can do when faced with an opportunity or an issue that needs to be sorted. There is always somebody you can talk to, somewhere to research, someone who

22

CONNECT MAGAZINE April 2014

has gone that road before, some resource available, some organisation to help or something you can Google. It’s so important to focus on what’s within your own realm of influence and pursue that rather than lament what’s out of your control.

YOU DON’T HOLD BACK AT YOUR PRESENTATIONS AND SPEAKING EVENTS, YOU TELL IT AS IS; DO YOU FEEL THIS HAS ATTRIBUTED TO YOUR SUCCESS TO DATE? No vested interest I don’t know really – I’m just me! I’m truly independent in the financial world, because we don’t give advice; we are totally devoted to up skilling and educating people to take control of their own economy so I don’t have any vested interests. As I take to the podium in any scenario, I always tell people my own personal stories about the topic that I’m speaking about because that’s what makes any theme come to life. If I’m not authentic, then what’s the point? I never try to just show the sunny side of my experience, because it’s not realistic and it’s so crucial for me that my audience knows that I can truly empathise with them. It’s not always easy to talk about my mistakes, my failures and times that I’ve got it wrong, but if somebody can benefit from that, then it’s more than worthwhile.

YOU HAVE SOME BOOKS AVAILABLE FOR PEOPLE TO ASSIST IN THIS CLIMATE CAN YOU TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR BOOKS? I’ve written three to date; “Positive Economics” is a Leaving Cert Economics textbook that I cowrote with Trudie Murray and Brian O’Connor. In addition, I published “The Savvy Woman’s Guide to Financial Freedom” which is written like I’m sitting down with a very good friend as she tells me about her financial dreams and I support her right the way through, with practical direction and guidance, to her betterment. A number of readers have commented that this is exactly what it feels like, so I’m delighted that the tone I wanted to foster came to pass! Finally, I’ve recently launched “The Savvy Guide to Making More Money” which is designed for those who want to participate fully in economic recovery by pursuing all opportunities available to them. It’s brimful with my own examples, stories and highly practical direction for graduates looking towards their career, the employee who wants more and the person who wants to or already has a business.

UP TO RECENTLY THE MARKET YOU ARE IN WAS QUIET MALE DOMINATED, DO YOU THINK THIS HAS CHANGED AND WHY? I never took much notice to be honest. I have to say that I think that I have a lot more opportunities in many areas of my career

because I’m a woman. There are networks, grants, organisations and initiatives for women. There is soft positive discrimination that goes on all the time whether it is for the composition of a media panel or a speaking event. It has to be said that the previous generations of women who were warriors for equality allow my generation to stand on their shoulders.

WHERE HONESTLY DO YOU SEE THE ECONOMICS OF IRELAND IN 10 YEARS TIME? I think that projections that far out are broadly blind with wildly volatile assumptions underpinning them. As I choose investments in the stock market, I live by my own rule of thumb which is “don’t try to predict the future, just analyse the present”.

HOW OR WHEN DOES SUSAN CHILL OUT AND RELAX IF AT ALL? I do, of course! I wouldn’t be much craic otherwise!! I go to a gym class a couple of times a week, I absolutely love to cook and I’m very fortunate to travel a lot with the business, so I always make sure to plan an hour here and there to be a tourist. I also have an absolutely wonderful family and an amazing husband, so I’m never bored. I have to say that when you love what you do, truly look forward to getting up in the morning before you drift to sleep, it doesn’t feel like I need all that much time “off” per se. However, I must emphasise the point that I’ve really learned to focus on whatever I’m doing; so when I’m at home in Cork for the week-end with my Mam, Dad and brother, the contents of my e-mail inbox are the furthest thing from my mind. I’m just a daughter and sister then.

Does Etsy zone in on a target market to suit my product or is it a general selling arena?

Can you give us some background on the company and the service it provides?

Etsy is a general selling arena but you can tailor your shop to suit your product by providing recent images and concise information on the product you are offering for sale.

• Etsy was founded in Brooklyn in 2005. We are a marketplace where people around the world connect to buy and sell unique goods. Our platform enables independent, creative businesses to reach a global audience.

Spring Brights Hi Guys! I wanted to start my time with “Connect” with a bright and happy approach. Since we are in one of the cheeriest times of the year, I thought that it would be perfect to write about all the different elements of Spring. In particular I want to talk about Spring Brights. For most, this sounds like a fashion and beauty term. Which of course it can be, but the way that I am thinking about it is in relation to positivity as well as fashion. Hope that you enjoy my “bright” approach to Spring!

MATTE IT UP!

This spring it’s all about the bright matte lip. Being a fan of gloss myself, it has been a difficult and painful process. Not only has it been painful to let go some of my glosses but particularly painful on my lips themselves!! Matte lipsticks suck all the moisture out of your lips and they leave them all dry and cracked in their midst, and we all know that dry lips will never come into fashion! To keep your lips from succombing to the “cracked” trend that no one wants, try the good old fashioned 8 hour cream before and after you apply your matte lip. Give it a good time to soak in before you apply your signature matte lip and if you are super picky about how matte you want your lip to be, then you can pat off the excess balm before you apply! This way you and your lips are happy!

THE CANDY COLOURED ASSORTMENT

A bright fashion and fun trend that has been gracing the catwalks has been the pastel craze. We have all turned into cute ice creams floating around the streets. Most people think that you have to dress up as a full sweet assortment, but you can always mess around with the trends so that they suit you. If you want to add an edge to your outfit, it isn’t against any rules to incorporate small elements of this trend. Feel free to add your usual statement black boot and leather jacket to a candy coloured ensemble. Or, if you are on the fashion scene but you don’t feel like you can quite stand this trend, then you can subtly introduce it into some of your ordinary outfits by wearing a pastel nail varnish or carrying a pastel coloured tote.

SPRING BRIGHT POSITIVITY

warm blankets and re-runs of television series. I can happily live in that world too but not all year round! I wanted to write this so that everyone can know that it is okay to breath in the fresh spring air and wear the bright colours. Sometimes people feel that they need to remain eternally dampened by the mood of others around you. The birds are chirping, aren’t they? Even if you feel like you are the one that will stand out in your bright fun pastel colours, so what? You need to feel alive in your life and Spring is the perfect starting point. Life is too short and people can’t be afraid to live in the land of the light and the bright!!! So turn on the Pharrell Williams song and be HAPPY!!

I can speak for myself when I say that I am so happy when I see the bright colours facing me everywhere I look. the daffodils start to grow and all the magazine covers are laced with happy people dancing around the fields. So why can’t we embrace this happiness? Spring gives the perfect opportunity for us to embrace the ways of the people on those magazine covers. We can’t live in the deep, dark winter forever. I know that some people are perfectly content to live in the world of

Thinking about a Baby? IT PAYS TO PREPARE Having a baby is an exciting and significant time for most couples. While we would never embark on a major project such as building a house without plans and the help of an engineer to get the foundations right; many couples embark on pregnancy without ensuring that they are at peak health. Women are born with a reservoir of eggs or “egg bank” in their ovaries which gradually declines in number over their reproductive years. Eggs are not renewed and it is acknowledged that the optimal time to become pregnant is before aged 35. A healthy 30 year old has a 20% chance of getting pregnant each month compared to a 5% chance for a 40 year old. Your egg reservoir can also be affected by previous surgery to your ovaries, certain chronic medical conditions known as autoimmune diseases. This is not to say that many women in their forties do not succeed in having healthy pregnancies. Occasionally, if women have had complicated pregnancies in the past, a consultation with an Obstetrician/ Gynaecologist can be helpful. At the end of such a consultation a plan can be put in place, where appropriate, to minimise similar problems recurring. When to seek advice if pregnancy is not happening. Generally, we advise that a couple should try for a pregnancy for a year before seeking medical advice. However, women may be aware of underlying conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, endometriosis or other medical problems and earlier intervention could be wise in such situations. Men may be aware of injuries in childhood, infections such as mumps or STIs, or previous surgery.

Eat Healthily – an apple a day or three or five!!! We also know that eating healthily is helpful to achieving a pregnancy- a diet which is full of healthy, unprocessed foods is the key. I recommend that looking at a list of low GI foods and trying make up the bulk of your meals with these is good. A healthy and balanced diet including leafy vegetables such as broccoli and spinach; dairy products for calcium and Vitamin D; oily fish for omega 3s; seeds and nuts /meat for protein and iron is important. Unfortunately modern cooking techniques can diminish the nutrients in our foods which is why we require supplements of folic acid. Approximately three months prior to becoming pregnant women should start taking folic acid 400 micrograms; folic acid has been shown to reduce the risks of spina bifida and other neural tube defects. This can be bought over the counter in any pharmacy. There are a number of women who would be recommended to take a higher dose of folic acid 5mg- these would include women: • Who have previously had a baby with anencephaly or spina bifida or women with a family history of spina bifida/anencephaly • Women on certain long term medications especially those for epilepsy – the pharmacist who usually dispenses your medications can advise you!!! • Women with a high BMI Avoid excess caffeine and alcohol in the lead in to a potential pregnancy. Remember by the time you know you are pregnant the most crucial weeks of the baby’s development have already occurred. Exercise is good for everyone It is recommended that women strive to have a normal Body Mass Index (BMI) prior to pregnancy. Too skinny is not good for you and being very overweight puts both you and your baby at risk. Women who are overweight have a higher risk of miscarriage, are more likely to develop high blood pressure and diabetes. They are also more likely to have problems becoming pregnant. Give yourself three months to get as close as possible to a normal BMI; this should be done with a healthy eating plan and an exercise programme that includes both cardio and resistance training. It can be very useful to consult with a dietician and perhaps a Personal Trainer. Equally, recent research is demonstrating that men’s weight also affects male fertility. Men who are overweight are likely to have problems with sperm production. Some forms of exercise can be risky in pregnancy such as weight training-you may need to alter your programme or, if you are exercising for the first time a physiotherapist

can guide you on what is safe for you! Pilates is an excellent exercise for pregnancy as it will strengthen your core muscles and pelvic floor.

LIFESTYLE FACTORS

The evidence that smoking is dangerous for babies is incontrovertible. Babies of smokers are more likely to be low birth weight or suffer from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Smoking also affects the quality of both sperm and eggs and thus, may be associated with difficulties in getting pregnant. The HSE employs Smoking Cessation Officers who can help people who want support to give up. Most pharmacies can provide one to one consultations to explain what options could be tailored to you either as you plan your pregnancy or to help you cut down/ quit once you get your happy news. Alcohol should be avoided and a check on Rubella (German measles) immunity should be checked. An up to date smear test is also advisable.

MEN HAVE A KEY ROLE TOO

We know that a father’s health is crucial also. Approximately 20% of infertility cases are due to a male problem. Another 30% show combined male /female issues. All of the nutritional advice normally given to women is also important for fathers. Wellman supplements containing specific vitamins for sperm production can be found in all pharmacies and health food shops. Lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking and diet are also important. Some men may unknowingly be using anabolic steroids or other supplements affecting sperm production. The lifecycle of sperm production is three months so any changes in health or lifestyle will take three months to see an affect.

KEY POINTS

• Planning for a healthy pregnancy is important • A healthy lifestyle is as important as medical help in many cases • It is always worthwhile seeking advice at an early stage

T he Importance of Dental Care As we all look at the importance of beauty Regimes and cleansing toning and moisturising do we think of our dental care. Our teeth are just as important as our skin so we are delighted to Welcome Marcus Mac Domhnaill award winning Kerry dentist to the contributors team to give us some tips each month on ‘The Importance of Dental Care’ Everybody likes to think that they are doing a reasonable job in caring for their gums and teeth. Our first impressions of a person are often based on their facial features. Good teeth and fresh breath can make all the difference in a job interview! However, when maintaining good oral hygiene, we not only protect our teeth and gums, but also our heart. Plaque is a creamy coloured substance and contains harmful bacteria. Studies have shown that bacteria in plaque around teeth, can enter the bloodstream through the gums, and cause narrowing in blood vessels and at the heart valves. This gives us a good reason to floss and brush twice daily. Teeth need looking after from the moment they first appear. Habits gained in childhood can last a life-time. Regular dental visits throughout childhood are essential to maintain good oral health and to pick up on problems before they become major issues or cause pain. Dietary advice for children can be very important in their overall treatment plan. Don’t be afraid to ask your dentist or hygienist any questions. This is especially important with first-time parents. The aim of cleaning teeth is to remove plaque, which can not only eat into teeth causing tooth decay but also cause gums to shrink back (gum recession). Prevention is the best cure in both of these cases. The prevention of heart disease is important for all patients, so the less plaque in the mouth, the better the blood vessels and heart valves will operate. Dental plaque can cause specific problems during pregnancy or in people on medication for certain medical conditions. It is always good to talk to your doctor if you feel that medication is leading to dryness in the mouth, as this dryness can increase plaque levels. So how should we clean our mouth? All the advice now states that we should floss and use interdental brushes to begin with. This will remove the bulky particles of food and plaque. This can be followed with mouthwash. If your gums are swollen and bleed a lot, your dentist may advise a mouthwash with chlorhexidine, for a time. This can encourage the gums to heal. Brushing should be the final part of your cleaning regime and should not be rushed. Fluoride toothpaste should be used with a brush that is suitable for you. Rotary heads on battery operated brushes should not be used forcefully. Brush gently and slowly, doing one tooth at a time. All the outsides should be brushed before starting on the insides. Finally, the chewing surfaces can be brushed. It is advised to leave the toothpaste in your mouth for an extra three to four minutes before spitting it out. This allows the enamel to absorb fluoride which strengthens teeth. Regular dental visits will help to prevent small problems escalating into large problems. In next month’s issue, I will look at the options available for people who are fearful of dental treatment and feel free to email any questions you may have to info@connectpublications.ie and we will pass on to Marcas.

wine

Wow! At the time of writing anyway the sun is absolutely splitting the rocks for the first time in 2014. Coinciding with the launch of this exciting new Magazine for Kerry it bodes well for the future. The very best of Luck with it Margaret, I’ve no doubt that it will be a huge success. Righto! Who am I and why are you reading my column? Quite simply wine and food is my life. I simply I love it. Every single aspect of it! Luckily I get to taste thousands of wines a year (someone has to do it folk’s!) and not to have anyone thinking that I’m an alcoholic or anything, but I do enjoy a glass or two most nights to un-wind. So that’s my dirty washing aired. Here in each monthly article I will try to de-mystify some aspect of the wonderful world of wine you our readers. For too many people wine can be intimidating. For far too long there has been too much pretentiousness surrounding wine in this country. My task here is to try and make you the wine drinker more comfortable when it comes to selecting your wine the next time you are in your local wine merchants or indeed given that arduous task of choosing the wine for the table the next time you are in a restaurant! And speaking of Restaurants aren’t we just blessed here in the Kingdom with the quality of the restaurants we have at our doorstep. The Kingdom we may be known as in GAA circles but in terms of food, and our food producers we most certainly are a foodies “kingdom”. Each Month I will suggest wines that are “in style” at any given time however I will always suggest wines that are great value for money, Quality/Price. I will suggest wines that you may never have considered trying yourself. I will suggest Restaurants with wine lists and menus that stand out to me. Do yourself a favour and be adventurous. Try different grape varieties. Try wines from regions you may not have even heard of before. It will greatly enhance your taste buds for the better. Ok, it may be a wee bit intimidating for some but nowadays there are so many quality wines available from Irish wine merchants that choices are endless. Personally I have been lucky enough to have experienced and enjoyed many amazing wines over the past decade that it is near on impossible to suggest just one alone as the be all and end all, but I do have some favourites! These are merely personal choices, but remember the key here folk’s is to drink the wines that you enjoy yourself and even more importantly to enjoy the occasion! Hopefully you enjoyed our recent spell of fine weather and I look forward to adding some favourites to your wine drinking enjoyment over the coming months!

Conne Don’t Feel Alone Hello. My name is Angela Kerry and my Guardian Angel is named Frank. So o.k. I can almost hear some of you saying you don’t believe in Angels and some wanting to know how I know. But here’s the thing, whether you’re a believer or not every single one of us on this planet Earth has a Guardian Angel. They are assigned to us from the very beginning of our life through to the very end and their whole purpose is to give us unconditional love, no matter what we may say, think or do and to import wisdom and knowledge And there’s nothing they’d like better than to connect with us and work with us. Guess what? If we only take the time to stop and ask them, the connection will happen. It may not be at the first time of asking, but don’t give up because it will happen and when it does it’s the most wonderful feeling. And do you know what’s the best of all ? The knowing that whatever may happen, where ever we are, we are never alone and that’s a feeling that’s absolutely priceless, isn’t it? Now some of you are probably wondering how you’ll know that you’ve really really connected with your Guardian Angel or not. Well, first you ask, you check in with the feelings you have are warm and loving and giving you a sense of peace, security and overwhelming love. If they don’t then chances are you’re not connecting, so switch off, get up and walk away. You know, I’d actually recommend you read “Connecting with Your Angels” by Doreen Virtue. You’ll find her in most good bookshops and I know she’ll give you all the help and guidance you’ll need. UNTIL NEXT TIME. ANGEL BLESSINGS. MINUTE COFFEE BREAK FICTION

The Waiting Room I sit in the waiting room, my leg bouncing impatiently. I look around at nervous faces, an old couple holding hands, a mother trying to soothe a crying child, a young man tugging at the sleeves of his jumper. I close my eyes and try not to worry. Waiting in reality is not like the movies. There is no kind stranger to comfort you, no sudden realisation about the fragility of life. You are alone, struggling to suppress the dark thoughts that rise to the surface. And the minutes tick by, endless. An hour passes, then another and another. I feel my head fall as I drift into an uneasy sleep. Nightmares creep across my consciousness recalling all my darkest fears. All the mistakes I’ve made and secrets I’ve kept flash before me in that moment. Then I wake up. Back in the white room filled with nervous people. I continue to wait. I am counting the tiles on the floor when they finally call me. I move from the seat my muscles stiff. I walk through the hall making the journey longer than necessary. The bright lights and white walls burn my eyes. My breathing turns shallow as panic sets in. I try to calm myself by reciting parts of my favourite novel. It doesn’t help. I reach my destination and open the door with trembling fingers. I move into the room and see my mother’s smiling face. The fluorescent lighting reflects off her bare head. She looks sick and weak but still she smiles. No matter how sick she is or how bad it gets, she always smiles. I take the seat next to her and hold her hand. My eyes cloud as she grips it lovingly. I watch the doctor as he scans through his notes, his face 38

blank. After a time he looks up at us. I study his expression but am unable to discern what he is thinking. “It has been a difficult few years for you. Dealing with this illness is never easy and sometimes we don’t get the results we had hoped for” Panic sets in once again as the meaning of these words sinks in. My chest tightens and it becomes difficult to breathe. I keep thinking that this can’t be happening, it’s just another nightmare, it’s not real. But it is and the horrifying reality is crushing me. “Thankfully though this is not one of those times” I look up at the doctor hoping beyond hope that it’s not a trick, that all the pain and suffering is finally at an end. He’s smiling at me. Tears of joy pour down my cheeks and I laugh for the first time in forever. The doctor leans over to my mother and clasps her hand in his, “Ms. Lahey, you are cancer free.”
