HEALTHY WINTER SKIN Exposing our skin to central heating and harsh cold air may well leave it feeling de-hydrated. Increasing our intake of water is vital to hydrate the skin and it also helps to flush out unwanted toxins. If you experience exceptionally dry skin you may benefit from taking a daily supplement of HYALURONIC ACID during the winter months. It is naturally found in the body as part of the connective tissue. Hyaluronic acid holds up to 1000 times its own weight in water so is vital to retain moisture in the skin (available in capsule form). GIVE THE SKIN A GOOD NUTRITIONAL BOOST
Vitamin A, E, B, Zinc and Essential Fats are important for healthy skin. Foods which will help provide these nutrients include Fish, carrots, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, berries, avocados, and pumpkin seeds. If you are struggling to get these in your diet supplementation is a good idea. Choose a good quality multivitamin, such as SOLO MULTIFIFTY (one capsule per day). Another good choice to help with healthy skin is ONE NUTRITION POWERGREEN (available in capsule or powder form) GOOD FATS
Are essential and act as another internal moisturiser, may help to prevent flaky, dry skin. Oily fish, nuts, seeds and avocado all help to boost the intake of essential fatty acids. A daily dose of a good quality Omega 3 oil, such as ESKIMO, UDO’S or MOREPA will ensure your skin is kept hydrated and glowing. EXERCISE
Helps boost oxygen and blood flow bringing important nutrients to the skin and working up a sweat naturally removes toxins. Ensure you drink plenty of water afterwards to stay hydrated. GRAB YOUR BEAUTY SLEEP
While you sleep your body repairs its cells including the skin. Skin cells can be damaged by stress, UV light, dust and pollution causing the skin to become dull, dry and pallid. Lack of good sleep can also lead to dark circles under the eyes and sagging and lack lustre skin. Aim for 7-8 hours a night and reduce your caffeine intake so it isn’t interfering with your sleep. If you find it difficult to get off to sleep or stay asleep some excellent products worth checking out include MELISSSA DREAM which contains magnesium, L-Theanine, B Vitamins and Lemon Balm, two tablets one hour before bed time will help to relax you and help you to switch off. A. VOGEL DORMEASAN contains valerian and hops, 30 drops in a little water 30minutes before bedtime should have you nodding off in no time!! SUNSHINE AND FRESH AIR
Neither of which we will get a lot of over the next couple of months!! So ensure you are taking a good quality VITAMIN D supplement, such as Nature’s Plus, Pharmanord or Viridian. It is important to maintain our levels of Vitamin D during the winter. Is a good facial serum part of your beauty routine? If not, it should be!!!! Some of the benefits include: anti-ageing, restores natural youthfulness, deeply moisturizing and helps to firm, lift and plump. One of my personal favourites is the DR. MAHERS 7 BERRY FACIAL SERUM. Use at night as part of your skincare regime.
Until next time, stay healthy.

Trish Gallagher talks family, work and the campaign trail Delighted to chat with Sean and Trish Gallagher during the recent presidential campaign trail, a family man to the core we had a wonderful morning in their company. We spoke to Trish about it all. I grew up on a farm in Fairyhill in Kanturk, one of 7 children where everyone worked very hard so I was never idle. The active lifestyle didn’t end with the farm. I started my career in the leisure industry teaching sailing and adventure sports and then went on to run my own coffee shop. During the campaign trail recently Sean and I visited Kinsale, where I trained in adventure sports and also Mallow where I owned the coffee shop. It was lovely meeting people from way back, to re-connect and talk about the old days! I trained in beauty and worked in business development for a skincare/cosmetic division of L’oreal. Most recently I launched an online business called BOBOLU where I design and create products using inspirational & motivational quotations. I called my business BOBOLU after our 2 children Bobby and Lucy. As they get older I hope they’ll understand how important it was for me to have a career & calling my business after them encompasses my love for them as well as doing a job I love. When and where did you and Sean meet? We were introduced by my friend, Niamh Barry. She and her husband Jim Barry were holding their annual Costcutter conference in Cork in 2009. Niamh was sitting next to Sean, figured out he was single & suggested he meet a friend of hers. We met a week later and the rest as they say is history! You have two small children, how rewarding is that for you both? We have a 5 year old boy called Bobby and a 2 year old girl called Lucy. They are just the best thing to have ever happened either of us. We adore them. Obviously, like any parent, they keep us very busy & at times it can be difficult to get the balance right & lack of sleep can be a challenge but we wouldn’t have it any other way. Bobby is strong willed but has such a sensitive side and really looks out for his little sister. Lucy is a very typical 2 year old – my way or no way but she has a smile that melts our hearts every day. Can we ask how you and your husband came to the decision that he would run for president again? When Seán sent out the letters to each of the local authorities, urging them to utilise their right to nominate a candidate, the
4 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
responses he received were overwhelming, so many of them asked him to consider running again and pledged their support if he did. He suggested it to me, which came as a huge surprise. After taking some time to dwell on it & get my head around it I thought, yes this is the right thing to do. What drove that decision for him or you both? Did you have doubts? Again, the decision was driven by the level of support we received from people following the letters sent to the Local Authorities. The doubts don’t really come into it where I am concerned when it comes to Sean. I know Seán and I have such faith in his abilities, just seeing him out and about with people reinforces that faith and I trust. I believe he has the ability to be an excellent President. For myself - having experienced the 2011 election campaign and knowing how hectic it can get, I had some initial concerns about the children, how it might impact them, impact on their daily lives during the campaign. I wondered how I/we might manage being there for them while also being available to the campaign and to Sean. I sat with this for a while and put in place the right supports for them and for the family so that we could do this campaign and still have good quality family time. Last week we visited Bobbys school, St Laurences in Greystones. When we walked into his classroom, and as Bobby hadn’t seen Sean in a while, he leapt out of his chair and ran into his arms. No matter what the outcome those are the precious memories that we will always hold dear to our hearts.

Putting yourself in the limelight as a presidential candidate is not an easy task, as your life is under media scrutiny 24/7.....how do you and Sean deal with that pressure and sometimes negativity? You must have a very strong bond.... It definitely isn’t an easy task and yes we are under media scrutiny. At the same time we are mindful that people want to know about the presidential candidates, their vision, values and views, their lives and we are happy to share that with them as much as we can to let them know who we are. I personally decided from the outset to stay away from the negativity which is often associated with social media. I won’t look at it and I won’t be taken in by that. I try not to be upset by anything I read in the media. That said, it can be hard at times. When that happens we have a few go-to tools that we do. We take a little time to step back from it, we remind ourselves why we are doing this and focus on what’s good in the campaign. We find that depending on where we are at that given time, meditation, exercise, yoga always helps both of us. We always focus on our family and are grateful for the simple things in our lives. We know who we are and who we are not. That always grounds us and gives us perspective. How did you and Sean cope with the disappointment of the 2011 election, in particular the ‘tweetgate’ episode. Was it hugely difficult to overcome that? The aftermath was very difficult. It is very hard to see someone you love suffering in such a way and it took a while to come back from it. We had to pick ourselves up and start afresh, the manner in which Seán did that never fails to impress me. Sean is a hugely positive person, he takes the learning from situations and he moves on. What do you think of our current president Michael D Higgins? I believe Michael D Higgins has provided a lifetime of admirable service to the Irish people. There’s a well-known saying that ‘behind every strong man is an even stronger woman’....how do you feel you support Sean, particularly in this campaign? I really believe in Seán’s abilities, I always have and so that makes it very easy to support him. I am out and about on the campaign
6 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
with him quite a lot and while it can be challenging at times I am really enjoying the experience and just living in the moment of it. Sometimes it’s the basic things that get forgotten. So I always check in to see has he eaten, is he getting enough sleep, is he managing to get some exercise, vitamins etc. And most importantly is he having good quality time with the children. What are the biggest pressures on you and Sean amid this campaign? It’s a busy campaign, we are both on the road a lot and of course it’s hard being away from the kids, but we’re very grateful to have such support and a good structure in place at home for them. Sean has been pretty clear in why he feels he would make a good president.....but if you were asked the same question, why do YOU feel he is the right man for the job? I’ve been very fortunate to have attended many events with Sean where I see first hand how he connects with people. Even when we are out and about on a daily basis I see how people feel heard and acknowledged after meeting him. He has a unique ability to connect, encourage and inspire people. He also has a very varied background and skillset that he would bring to the role. I truly believe he would represent the entire nation at home and on the world stage, to such a high standard, that I would be not only very proud of him as my husband, but also proud that we have a great leader holding office. Have you allowed yourself to think about what it would be like to be Ireland’s First Lady? I don’t get time to think that far ahead. I am taking it one day at a time. Each day I look at where am I going, who will I be meeting and are the kids ok! Of course, I realise it would be a huge change for us and for the kids but they are small and very adaptable. It would be the most amazing honour and one that I would commit to 100% and work extremely hard at but there is a very big mountain to climb in the coming weeks so I’m taking each day as it comes. Tell us something about Sean that not many people know.... Sean has a hugely soft side and is mush when it comes to the kids. He phoned his mother every single day when she was alive. Sean has a practice every day where he meditates in gratitude for all the simple things in his life, for example that he can walk, see, hear etc. He likes to take some time away on yoga retreats, has been to the Plum Village in France to the Buddhist Monk, Thich Nhat Hanh. He has also been to India to visit the spiritual temples and Ashrams.
We were delighed to recently meet Sean to discuss all things Connect.

ELAINE CROWLEY TV Star & Fashion Fixer
Prototype design from Elaine's debut fashion collection
By Marisa Reidy SHE grew up in the small north Cork village of Newtwopothouse outside Mallow, never really intending to pursue a career in front of the TV cameras. But as fate would have it, Elaine Crowley went on to do exactly that - and is now one of the most recognised faces on Irish daytime television, fronting her own show Elaine on Virgin Media One (formerly TV3) weekdays at 3pm. The beautiful, bubbly brunette is as friendly and open about her life as her TV persona would have you except, and was happy to chat with CONNECT about everything from family life, work and her new clothing line – to her own weight struggles and what she jokes is the media’s unfathomable ‘obsession’ with her love life. Elaine told us that while she never had any grand desires to work in TV, her secondary schooling in north Cork probably steered her slightly in that direction. “I went to a great secondary school, Nagle Rice in Doneraile, and we were always doing plays and performances and musicals, so I suppose, in a way, that was half the reason I went in the direction I did,” she said. “After school, I studied Communications in DIT and once I graduated I came back to Cork to work for C103 and then worked in News at 96FM.” Following on from her spell in radio, Elaine got her break at TV3, where she worked as a news reporter and then news anchor. She also made regular appearances on some of TV3’s flagship daytime shows such as Ireland AM and Midday, ‘chipping in’ as she calls it, when regular presenters were on leave. Elaine explained that she went on to produce and present the Midday Show for six years, before it ‘morphed’ into her very own Elaine show over a year and a half ago. “I definitely never had this big plan to work in TV or anything, but I have to say I absolutely love what I do and am really delighted with how the show is going,” Elaine told CONNECT. “What I would say though is that it would not have happened without my strong news background, which is probably important for people to remember if they’re simply hoping to be famous or want to work in front of the camera.” Elaine has free rein over the show’s format and the guests she features and she says that the feedback has 10 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
been really good, which makes her very proud. “It’s really great to see how the show has come into its own and it’s doing a lot better than I expected if I’m honest,” Elaine joked. “People seem to love the show and love the panellists so it’s just wonderful to be able to do a job every day that I love. Too many people struggle through a job, dreading going to work and wishing it to be the weekend, which is pretty awful, so I’m very luck really.”

Never one to shy away from talking about her personal struggles with her weight, Elaine says that she still gets ‘fat shamed’ on a regular basis, but says she is a strong enough person to deal with it. She does believe, however, that the obsession with women’s appearance is totally unacceptable, particularly for young people who may not be able to handle it as well as others. “My entire life, I have never been thin, and my weight is always being commented on, even still,” she said. “There is an obsession there with women and how they look and it can be bloody hard being a woman, particular in the public eye. “I still have to deal with nasty comments on a regular basis and people can be very cruel, but I believe that if you are strong in yourself then you can deal with it. The problem, however, is for kids, who I feel so sorry for. It’s bad enough for someone like me, but for kids it can really affect them psychologically, which is pretty disgusting to be honest.” Elaine says that thankfully, women with a similar body shape to hers are now becoming more common than not and she wants to remind those who may be victims of nasty abuse to know their self-worth “Thankfully there are more women like me around now who don’t fit the skinny narrative so just remember that you are beautiful just as you are,” she said. “If telling me I’m fat is the worst that someone can say then do you what, let them at it.” What is hugely important, Elaine says, is being happy and healthy and living being pro-active about fitness. “Everyone is an individual, but what’s important to me is that my body is functioning very well and that’s the key,” she said. “Whatever people may say, what’s most important for me is being very, very pro-active about health and fitness and if your body is in better shape because of it then that’s what’s important. I lift weights, I go to the gym and I have a strong, healthy body and mind.” And if the constant discussion about her weight isn’t enough, Elaine also has to contend with what she terms the media’s ‘obsession’ with her love life. She laughs if off as she talks about it and says she simply just doesn’t understand it - particularly when there is so much more to focus on! “It’s just annoying to be honest, but I don’t really give it a second thought – but I really don’t get it,” she laughs. “I find it ridiculous that the media is worried about who I’m going out with rather than focussing on all the other things I’ve achieved – like becoming the first female TV presenter/producer in the country for example. I mean I have a brain too,” she said, 12 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
“It’s one thing when your partner is in the limelight too, but to be honest it’s just lazy. It’s easy to focus on that aspect of my life to get clicks. I really don’t understand it at all.” As she looks ahead to a new season of Elaine following the August newseason launch and rebrand of TV3 to Virgin Media Television, Elaine is also working on another hugely exciting project – away from the TV screens. She is currently working on her selftitled clothing collection for the ‘larger lady’ – a project which she tells CONNECT she is very excited about. The 41-year-old explained that it was her own challenge to find elegant, comfortable cocktail and evening wear that prompted the collaboration with ‘So Amazing’ – the brand which has been dressing her for the past few years. “Sadly a lot of designers just don’t want to dress you if you’re fat, so it can be very frustrating to get something elegant and comfortable and that looks great,” she said. “Over the past number of years, anytime I’ve had a red carpet event I have had my dress custom made by ‘So Amazing’ and we found that once I wore them people were asking, ‘Oh can I buy that dress’ – but because it had been custom made it wasn’t available." “So I decided that I wanted to design evening and party wear that, I suppose, is aimed at ladies who are over a Size 14 but might not necessarily be the 18 or 20 ‘plus sizes’ either. The collection is all about women being able to walk into a shop and know they can pick up a size that fits them and is made by people who know what they’re talking about. It’s about dressing women with a H cup who need to wear a bra, or others who need sleeves because they’re not comfortable with their arms - and not having to spend more on their underwear than the actual dress to look great and feel comfortable.” While a launch date has not yet been confirmed, Elaine confirmed that the collection will be available nationwide well in time for the Christmas market.

Joanna DONNELLY
The Great Irish Weather Book By Marisa Reidy SHE launched onto our TV screens as RTE’s newest weather forecaster back in 2016 and since then, Joanna Donnelly has become one of the stations most recognised faces. But keeping the nation up to speed with the latest weather fronts is just one of this lady’s many important roles, as she is also the co-founder of a charity that helps couples access IVF – and if that’s not enough, she is also preparing for the release of her first book. Speaking to CONNECT ahead of the September 21st release of children’s book – "The Great Irish Weather Book" - Joanna explained just how she went from studying Maths in college to becoming one of RTE’s most familiar ‘weather girls’. “I studied Maths in University and had been doing a thesis on the weather and air pollution and always felt I had more to do on it,” she said. “It was looking like it was going to be a Masters Degree and having done the thesis bit, I had spent a lot of time in the Met Office and really liked it.” Although Joanna initially took up a post in a private college after graduating - working in the administration office in the computer department - she later got a call from Met Éireann inviting her for an interview - and the rest, as they say is history She worked initially in the meteorology office in a support role and after five years was promoted to meteorologist and then to forecaster. After taking some time out to have her three children, Joanna eventually returned to Met Eireann – but felt she needed more of a challenge. “My husband is an aviation forecaster and I thought at the time ‘well I might give that a try’ because it is very different to general forecasting” Joanna explained. “Unfortunately with the roster required to train for that, I just wasn’t able to find the time to make it work, so I decided I might give TV a go. I began training for that in 2015 and went live in 2016 and I do really like it – it’s very different than what I was used to. While Joanna jokes that forecasting the Irish weather can often be quite repetitive – describing it as ‘Goldilocks weather – not too hot and not too cold, but just right’ – one of her biggest and most pressurised career challenges came back in October 2017 when Ireland was battered by Strom Ophelia. The pressure Joanna felt to safely and accurately forecast and deliver the true danger of that storm was overwhelming she
18 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
Image: Ruth Medjber said, so much so that she didn’t sleep. “This storm was something completely new to us and these things really don’t happen here, so that was a huge responsibility for all of us. I remember I was so nervous that people’s lives were potentially in my hands because Met Eireann was the centre that issued the warnings, so I didn’t sleep that Saturday and Sunday worrying that I wouldn’t communicate the warnings right and people wouldn’t understand the seriousness of it. It was a huge responsibility and it did weigh very heavily on me – on all of us [at Met Eireann]. As well as enjoying a successful career with Met Éireann, Joanna is also the founder of charity Pomegranate which provides help for those suffering from infertility. The charity was founded following Joanna’s owns struggles to conceive her second child, Tobias (now 10) who did arrive via IVF. “I had my daughter Nikki naturally but when it came time to have my second child, I was totally oblivious to secondary infertility and only learned later how common it was,” Joanna told CONNECT. Tobias stubbornly refused to take so after two years of trying I remember feeling so desperate and stressed.” Having suffered a number of miscarriages, Joanna and her husband made the medical decision to opt for IVF and thankfully got pregnant with Tobias on the first attempt. They later went on to have a third child, Casper (8) naturally, but Joanna was determined that she

“Good help to those in need"
Kerry lady fulfils personal goal to pay it forward Cara Buckley Nurse Chef and Mother The time has come for me to 'Pay it forward ' and fulfil a goal of mine which is to travel to one of poorest places in the world this October. I have been invited by a charity called the ‘Mustard seed Ireland' to nurse and care for abandoned children in Kingston, Jamaica. There are a number of children living with disabilities, HIV/ AIDS and young girls who have been subjected to horrific crisis pregnancies. My goal is to bring them hope, to inspire them to dream big and to not let their past define their future. Through education and support we can make their futures brighter. As a Nurse, Chef and a Mother I feel the time is right for me to utilise my life skills and help in any way I can. One of the Bon Secours mission statements greets me on the
ward where I'm privileged to work each day “Good help to those in need “. This one sentence is the foundation to my day... then followed by a short and sweet prayer by my CNM2 "Oh God help us get through the day ". Its faith, hope, caring, hard work and teamwork with compassion and kindness that makes my role as a nurse so inspiring and possible. I love my job as a Nurse in the Bon Secours, caring for the patients, making patients pain disappears or educating them about their illness or procedure. I'm as privileged as a nurse to listen to patients, to hold confidential stories in my heart and ease their burdens of life's troubles. Sometimes patients just need someone to listen, someone to hold their hand or someone to simply care. If I can make one child smile, laugh and feel safe in Jamaica then that would just make my day. I have been blessed in my life with two healthy and happy children. I have qualified as a professional chef and also as a nurse. I'm hoping that my trip to Jamaica will inspire me on my next mission. Possibly a role where I can motivate, educate and bring about fairness to this troubled world. A big thank you to The Bon secours Tralee for their generous donation towards the Charity. wanted to help other families who found themselves in the same position as she and her husband, but who may not be able to afford IVF. “We were lucky that we had the money set aside for IVF, but I just thought this is really not fair on people who simply can’t afford it,” Joanna explained. From that came her charity, Pomegranate, which she founded with Fiona McPhillips – a dear friend she got to know through an online parenting community while on her own IVF journey.
three released her first book – ‘The Great Irish Weather Book’- on September 21st through Gill Books. In it, she explains what weather is and how it happens - from cold fronts to climate change, satellites to storms. Filled with everything you've ever wanted to know about the weather – and beautifully illustrated by Fuchsia MacAree – Joanna says that while the book is billed as a children’s book, it will also be of equal interest to adults.
The charity, Joanna explained, funds the cost of one course of IVF for couples – paid directly to the clinic – and although it is quite a small charity on a very limited budget, it has already paid for 19 couples to access IVF, with Joanna aware of eight babies being born as a result.
“When Deirdre Nolan at Gill Books approached me about writing a book I immediately said of course, because I do a lot of talks in schools anyway teaching young kids about meteorology and weather forecasting so I probably had half the book written anyway,” Joanna said.
“We know the pressure on people when undergoing IVF and that feeling that you’ve let everyone down if it doesn’t work, so we never ask those we help to let us know the result,” Joanna explained. “However, we do know that there have been eight babies born through the charity already which is just wonderful,” she said.
“I suppose because I know how to explain it, it just fell out of me, but I really want people to know that although it’s essentially a children’s book, many adults who have seen it have loved it and some have come back and said ‘oh I never knew that’. It’s really a book for everyone on the theory of meteorology and how it works.
And it’s that not enough for Joanna to juggle, the mum-of-

AUTUMN COMFORTS By Nora Butler
As summer draws to an end and for us as members 'normality' ensues. A bid to banish the post holiday pounds and to focus on feeling, eating and looking good is enough of an incentive to get us eating well. Stocking up the store cupboard with fat free dressings, canned goods, fry-light, stock cubes, herbs, passata, oil free tomato puree, soy sauce and spices which can give depth and flavour to your meals. To ensure you are getting enough calcium and fibre in your diet choose foods such as milk or cheese that are high in calcium. Options for high fibre foods are wholemeal bread (small 400g loaf or 60g roll) wholegrain cereals, seeds, nuts and crispbreads. In Slimming World we call these A Choice (Dairy rich food) and B Choice (Fibre rich food). These can be enjoyed as part of your meals or as part of a snack. Choosing one portion of fibre and one portion of calcium will optimise your weight loss success. 6-8 cups of fluid per day to keep you hydrated choose water, sugar free drinks, tea and coffee. You really can have lots of fun with your food, eat nutritionally balanced meals and lose weight. There's a psychology behind weight loss too and that's the struggle that most dieters have. As individuals we have triggers, emotions, negative thoughts and disbelief in our abilities. A positive vibe and group support is really important for individuals to successfully lose weight and keep it off. We all hit obstacles or walls and need support. Too often a person embarking on a lifestyle change may have a bad day or more and decide to write themselves off!!! If we are working together and in a supportive environment you feel connected, motivated and you realise that you are not alone! Group can help you to prepare yourself in advance for difficult times. Creating new habits and coping strategies can take time. Sometimes members don't want to speak initially at group but as the weeks pass by they start to feel more comfortable to ask and receive help. Groups are where the fun, friendships and magic happens!! Exercise gives you energy and improves your overall health. It's an important element of losing and maintaining weight. Choose an activity that you like to do. Walking, running, working out at a gym; dancing, zumba, martial arts, playing a sport; exercise at home; swimming or biking. If you are not currently exercising, try and organise your life around exercise instead of viewing it as an optional 'add on' to improving your lifestyle. FITTING IN OTHER EXERCISE OPPORTUNITIES CAN ENTAIL; • Taking the stairs instead of escalator. • Park furthest point away from the entrance. to the shopping centre. • Pace the corridor at work several times per day. • Stand where possible. • Get off the bus a few stops early. Autumn comforts to enjoy that can help you to lose weight without going hungry!!

Facing the Winter
At this time of year, the children are back at school or college, holidays are over, leaves are falling and we are seeing Halloween and even Christmas merchandise appear in the shops. If you have a tendency towards depression, it can feel like a very difficult time. The encroaching dark evenings and bad weather can actually have a profound effect on our mood and our ability to regulate it. There is a simple reason for this. The neurons responsible for producing the so-called “pleasure hormones” thrive in light, and are reduced in activity by darkness, so when we get smaller amounts of light, it affects our emotional state. This can range from mild melancholy to full-blown depression. Studies have shown that increasing the amount of light you get can make a real difference. Your body clock, or circadian rhythm, is vital in regulating mood, and it is really disrupted by modern lifestyles. Our bodies require light during the day, and dark at night. Now, unfortunately, we have dark days and spend our evenings either in front of the television or on electronic devices, both of which emit disruptive light. Some steps you can take are to ensure that you get out and about during the daytime as much as you can. Combine it with exercise if possible, as this is also effective at improving mood. Try to have bright lights in your home, and particularly use them in the morning. In the evening, have dimmer lighting, particularly when preparing for bed, and avoid using devices if you can. Reading a book by soft lamplight is much better preparation for a night’s rest than scrolling through Facebook or Twitter on your phone! We will look at some more tips for surviving winter next month.

FIX THAT CROOKED SMILE WITH CLEAR ALIGNERS! Are you happy with the general appearance of your smile? Do you tend to hide your teeth when being photographed? Do you hate the idea of having to wear conventional braces but would love to straighten your teeth? If the answer is yes, to any of the above questions then clear aligner therapy with Invisalign might just be the option for you! Invisalign treatment uses cutting-edge technology to create a series of virtually invisible and removable plastic trays (aligners) that are custom-made for an ideal fit over a patient’s teeth at every treatment stage. Invisalign aligners gradually and gently shift teeth into their correct position based on the exact movements a dentist or orthodontist plans out using ClinCheck 3D treatment planning software. 3D software allows you to see the proposed treatment journey and the likely final tooth position. More than 5 million people have started using Invisalign treatment worldwide. There are many benefits to straightening(aligning) teeth. Straighter teeth are easier to keep clean than crooked clean with less food and plaque getting trapped on teeth. Gums fit more tightly around teeth. Alignment will help to improve you smile giving you more confidence and self-esteem. It can also create more space for restorative work i.e. veneers, such that tooth preparation is less aggressive, or more space can be created for placement of prosthesis such as implants. The aligners are very comfortable and easily removed when eating. Some patient`s will complete treatment in as little as 3 months. Benefits are many! Neostrata is a cosmeceutical brand, so the active ingredients are able to penetrate all the skins layers to give amazing results for all issues like dehydration, rosacea, acne, pigmentation, dryness, dullness, clarity, texture, scarring, lines and wrinkles.
1.
Explain the process of a peel The process starts most importantly with a detailed consultation to acquire the correct information about my client’s skin health; to insure I prescribe them the correct treatment plan. Once that is established, the treatment begins with: • Hot cloth cleanse • 3minute microdermabrasion scrub • Extractions if needed 4. • 15minute pressure point facial, shoulder, and neck massage • The peel is applied, and left for anywhere between three and ten minutes • A customised masque is applied • Hand and arm massage is then 5. carried out • A serum and eye cream is then chosen • Finally the all important SPF I’d recommend a course of 4 treatments for best results!

Allergic Rhinitis in Children Allergic Rhinitis is a common childhood condition. It is an inflammation of the lining of the nose when airborne allergens cause release of inflammatory agents such as Histamine and others. This causes itching, inflammation and outpouring of fluid or mucous in the nasal passages, eyes, eyelids and itchy throat. It affects up to 20% of children and is often associated with Asthma. Children with Allergic Rhinitis may suffer from poor performance in school, snoring leading to sleep apnoea, leading to tiredness during the day and also recurrent ear infections. Two Types: (1) Seasonal -during the pollen season from May – September (2) Perennial – occurs all year round and common in younger children who spend most of their time indoors. Causes: (1) Seasonal: Pollen, most common cause is grass (2) Perennial: dust, house dust mite, animal dander, tobacco smoke (3) Vasomotor: due to cold air, tobacco, may predispose to Allergic Rhinitis.
About 20% of cases are seasonal, 40% are perennial and 40% are mixed Symptoms: (1) Sneezing (2) Runny nose / nasal congestion (3) Itchy nose, eyes and throat. (4) Itchy eyelids (5) Nosebleeds (6) Fatigue Signs on physical exam: (1) Dental Malocclusion (2) The Allergic Gape -continuous open mouth breathing (3) Allergic Shiners – dark circles under the eyes, the skin looks like silk, purplish. (4) Swollen eyelids, red eyes (5) Nasal crease – from rubbing itchy nose with the palm of the hand in upward direction, called the Allergic Salute. Other non-allergic conditions that may mimic Allergic Rhinitis: (1) Infective Rhinitis, purulent nasal discharge (2) Deviated septum post injury (3) Overuse of medications, such as Sudafed like drugs, should only be used for five days per month, can cause Chronic Rhinitis Medicamentosa which leads to scaring of the lining of the nose from loss of blood supply. (4) Untreated Hypothyroidism Complications / Associations: (1) Chronic Sinusitis (2) Asthma often associated with Allergic Rhinitis in up to 20% of cases. 80% of Asthmatics have Allergic Rhinitis, 40% of Allergic Rhinitis Children have Asthma. Treating Allergic Rhinitis aggressively sometimes improved Asthma control. (3) Eczema (4) Food Allergies Treatment: Tripartite approach includes: (1) Environmental control (2) Drug therapy (3) Immunotherapy 28 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
(1) Environmental Control: Avoiding or reducing exposure to airborne allergies is an effective means of alleviating symptoms of Allergic Rhinitis – covering pillows and duvets with antiallergic fabric and mattresses with plastic works well if the offending agents are listed in the perennial category. Substituting synthetic materials for wool and removing dust collecting household fixtures such as carpets, drapes and spreads. Air purifiers and dust filters may also help. With seasonal Rhinitis staying indoors when lawns are being mowed is also a help and loose grass should never be left on the lawn, it should be collected in a proper container. (2) Drug Therapy: Nasal irrigation with Saline is often helpful and can decrease the use of Antihistamine and Steroid Sprays. Antihistamines: non-sedating Antihistamines are preferable to the sedating Antihistamines such as Piriton which has other effects on the brain besides sedation. The non-sedating histamines such as Loratadine, Certirizine and Levocetirizine and Azelastine are also less sedating and if sedation occurs it usually passes off in a few days. Certirizine and Loratadine may be used in children over two years of age. Levocetirizine should only be used in children over the age of six. Intranasal histamines such as Azelastine is as effective as oral antihistamine, they work faster and last longer and have fewer side effects. Combination antihistamines with steroid sprays such as Dymista are also very effective. Intranasal Steroids: such as Flixonase or Beconase are very effective if administered properly but are slower to act than the antihistamine nasal sprays. Intranasal steroids should be administered with the head tilted forward and the base of the nose should be parallel to the ground. For allergic eye disease, Opatanol Eye Drops should be used. I am not in favour of steroid eye drops. Singulair orally is also quite effective and may be used in addition. (3) Immunotherapy Immunotherapy or Desensitisation involves exposing patients to increasing amounts of allergens to induce tolerance. It is proven to be very effective for Hay Fever, that is seasonal Hay Fever due to grass pollens. It is started in February every year and stops at the first sign of frost usually early October. It takes three years and maybe five years. It is given as a tablet under the tongue orally on a daily basis. Immunotherapy for perineal rhinitis due to dust mites or dust at present does not seem to be effective. Immunotherapy for grass pollens should be considered if standard treatment fails. Get Your Body Ready For Winter By: Majella Forde of Kuleana Group
Christmas is coming…… there I’ve said it, but more importantly Winter is coming and this means it’s a season that can be busy and exciting with plenty of distractions to keep us occupied and we don’t think about our health and taking care of ourselves. It’s natural for us to feel a lull in ourselves and this lull can have consequences in a variety of means.
Let’s talk about a weakened immune system How can this be, I’ve exercised all summer and I got loads of sun” you’re asking. This may be true but how many of us will sacrifice exercise for a night in, in front of a warm fire, feet up, watching a match on television, or curled up with a good book that we hadn’t finished from the previous Winter Our good habits we had all year, fall off by the wayside and that’s natural. I’m not going to be a hypocrite, I’ll be the first one found watching the football match on a Tuesday and Wednesday night. It’s a balancing act and we don’t always get it right. With shorter days and colder weather, finding the motivation to stay healthy and fit can be difficult. And that can lay the footing for a declining immune system, posing a greater risk of developing illness or injury. “I guess that’s why they call it the blues”.
Diet and Exercise While the winter season might increase the risk for weather-related injury, the biggest risk to our overall health is a lack of attention to diet and exercise routines. During the winter, we find ourselves so looking towards Christmas that we forget to prioritise our healthy habits. As if all the insanity of the season isn’t detrimental enough to our healthy habits, the chilly and unpleasant weather can also make it very difficult to find the motivation to get to the gym or head outdoors for exercise. In tandem with this, the additional time spent indoors means many of us snack more than we would typically at other times of the year. This combination that can quickly add on the pounds and reduce our happiness and self-esteem over time.
1. Calm Your Carb Cravings ....The cold season tends to ignite
our cravings for more carbs and comfort foods. Why? After you consume these delicious treats, your serotonin levels rise; this makes your brain think you are happier. And as the day wears on, your carb cravings get stronger and stronger. To counter this, try eating a protein-packed breakfast to keep your energy levels up throughout the day. If by the time the afternoon rolls around you’re still craving sweets or carbs, be sure to have low-fat and healthy snacks on hand. However, if you can, finding a way to increase your serotonin levels without food is the best way to beat the carb cravings
2. Add Omega 3 Fatty Acids ... Omega 3 fatty acids are a
healthy type of fat that are naturally found in many food types including fish, plant seeds and nuts. Omega 3 fatty acids are great for reducing joint pain and stiffness as they are a natural anti-inflammatory
3.Eat More Fibre ... Soluble fibre found in apples, oats and nuts is an important way to decrease inflammation and boost immune system function. 4. Eat More Green and Orange Vegetables... Sticking
primarily to vegetables and fruits that are dark green and orange is important in ensuring you’re getting healthy nutrients, sugars and fats. Spinach, kale, Swiss chard, squash, carrots and oranges are all delicious during the winter.
30 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
5. Cook with Spices .... Onions,
garlic, ginger and cilantro are the perfect items to add flavour to your food. Not only do they make food taste great, but they’re also shown to help improve immune function. Turmeric is a spice traditionally used in Chinese and Indian medicine. Its main active ingredient is called curcumin, which gives curry its yellow colour. This spice helps to combat a number of conditions including inflammation and heart disease, and it acts as a powerful antioxidant.
6. Plan Your Exercises a Week in Advance .... Try to stick to a
weekly exercise plan so you don’t put off your regular exercise activities. On Sunday night, write down your exercise schedule for the next seven days. Choose your exact workout routines, activities or exercises for each day and how long they will be. Children and young people (aged 2-18) All children and young people should be active, at a moderate to vigorous level, for at least 60 minutes every day. This should include musclestrengthening, flexibility and bone-strengthening exercises 3 times a week Adults (aged 18-64) Adults should be active for at least 30 minutes a day of moderate activity on 5 days a week (or 150 minutes a week). Older people (aged 65+) Older people should be active for at least 30 minutes a day of moderate intensity activity on 5 days a week, or 150 minutes a week with a focus on aerobic activity, muscle strengthening and balance. Adults with disabilities People with disabilities should be as active as their ability allows. Aim to meet adult guidelines of at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity on 5 days a week.
7. Sleep Longer and Better ... When the days
get shorter, your body will naturally want to sleep longer and will adjust its rhythm to the hours of daylight. Use the longer evenings to wind down and begin relaxing before bed. Try to go to bed as early as possible to give your body enough rest during the times it craves it the most.
8. Finally, talk to someone.... If you’re not feeling well, talk
to a friend, family member, your GP, counsellor, psychologist psychotherapist, you can find a list of accredited person on www. psi.ie. There are loads of options available to you, when you start to feel the winter blues, anxiety and stress, it’s important to know how to manage it in a healthy way. Don’t bottle it up.

Hi Lovely Readers, Can some one please tell me where has 2018 gone ..... Here we are at the beginning of October can you believe it. I would like to take this opportunity to wish my twin nieces a very happy 16th birthday on the 1st. Dear lord I am feeling old! I have to admit I love the Autumn/Winter season in the shop, we have new stock arriving every other day, as I mentioned in my last piece, it is possible to survive without a winter coat but for you cold creatures among my readers, we have scarves, hats and gloves to suit every style coat and every shaped face/head. We have oversized scarfs in stock at the moment and when you wrap them around you they are better than any significant other as a hug (that's my excuse for being single!!). If you are passing feel free to drop in and have a look around, you can also start thinking about gifts for Christmas...... Yes I know it's only October but we started our Christmas Deposit service last year and it was a great success as our customers didn't have the stress of trying to get all the pressies in one go. Take the pain out of Christmas shopping and start early after all you will have a better choice. Must sign off now as I must go in search of my over sized scarf as I am in need of a hug! Until next month Keep smiling

Maria Murphy
A Kerry woman in Dublin Maria Murphy of Ballydaly Rathmore Co.Kerry. She is a past pupil of Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra Rathmore. She completed her undergraduate studies and her post graduate studies in business commerce at UCC. She subsequently moved to south Dublin City for employment and to a career which she thoroughly enjoys. Living in Dublin has proved a positive in every way. Maria has always had a keen interest in style blogging and modelling in general. She was asked on a few occasions to enter miss Kerry but refrained from doing so. Since moving to dublin she was asked and encouraged again to enter the miss Ireland contest but on this occasion as a Dublin contestant. She decided to give it a go and having got through a few heats began to feel the excitement of it all and on the final of the heats went through again as Miss Dublin having been voted through again by the judges. What an overwhelming and amazing position it was and all of it proved to be such a positive experience, meeting wonderful young talented educated and fabulous young women, involved with top sponsors, getting to interact with previous winners of Miss Dublin and also previous Miss Ireland’s among them last years winner the beautiful Lauren McDonagh from Donegal. Meeting Rosanna Davidson, previous Miss World was a lovely moment also. I feel so privileged to wear the Dublin sash and I look forward with excitement to the year ahead as ms Dublin. Entering Miss Ireland was a wonderful experience and I have made great friends friends which I will forever keep in close contact with. It has been a huge learning curb for me personally and I feel has enhanced all my social skills and has opened up avenues of opportunity and allows me to embrace challenge very positively. Maria kicked off her reign as Miss Dublin on Sunday September 30th by partaking in the Dublin mini marathon in aid of her fundraiser cancer research. Over 5,500 Euro has been raised in the last 4 weeks which is phenomenal to say the least. I feel so so gratified at the huge generosity of all the people who have Donated to my charity and I must say a very Special Thank you to all the generous people who have donated either on my link or in person. This fundraiser is open for a further two weeks so anyone who still wishes to Donate can do so on my Instagram link mariaa_murphy or on Facebook. Maria is looking forward to a very busy and rewarding year as Miss Dublin. She looks forward to partaking in promotions, modelling and cat walk shows in Dublin and elsewhere. I am very grateful for all the support and good wishes and go forward proud and privileged to wear the Dublin sash as a Dublin contestant in Miss Ireland 2018. Connect Kerry | October 2018 | 41

What’s Trending for Autumn/Winter 2018?
After a seemingly endle ss finally arrived on the hig summer, the new fashion season has h with it a batch of fresh street. Autumn Winter as usual brings ideas, from heritage loo revival of eighties style ks, to another with new ways to wear neon. But the chief of the tribe has to be fou nd among the large sel ection of animal print this season. I have picked some of my favou rite trends hitting stores near you right no w!
Animal Instinct
This AW18 fashion is really wild for animal print. Forget any trashy preconceptions you had about animal prints as they are back in a big way. Leopard-print coats and tops will undoubtedly be the two most prevalent ways this trend presents itself on the high street this season. However, for a subtle nod you should try injecting the trend into your footwear. But if leopard print is not your thing there is also an abundance of snake and python patterns, with zebra, cheetah and faux-croc coming in classic, neutral tones. Alternatively, if you like a walk on the wild side try the multi coloured versions out there with a nod to the 80s. Why not pair your animal print with a pop of acid pink or bright orange. Whether you are someone who likes a timeless wardrobe, or something a bit edgier you will find an animal print for you. How to choose your wild side this season is up to you!
White ankle boots
White ankle boots have come straight out of the seventies to be one of the most significant trends for AW18 gracing the feet of nearly every fashion blogger, model, designer and celeb during fashion weeks. From flat boots to high heels and even over the knee boots, it was obvious to see that black was out and white is most certainly in. From preppy to punky, rocker to country, white ankle boots are just as versatile as their black counterparts. Throw on a pair with a plaid pencil skirt or a long dress in striped, floral patterns or plain colours for an edgy look. Alternatively pair with jeans, tees and denim or leather jackets for a laid back style. White boots don’t have to be prim and proper and it’s always more fun when a little unexpected is thrown into the mix. Essentially, you can wear your white boots with anything! 42 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
Catherine’s Fashion Fix
By Catherine Keane
Glossy fabrics
Whether vinyl, latex, plastic (a key look for summer 2018) or leather, glossy fabrics are key this season. Trousers, heels, coats, jumpsuits, gloves... you name it, we want it glossy. Lacquered fabrics are having a moment right now, and it's shinier than ever for this season. This season wear your leathers with less of a biker chick attitude and more of a sophisticated feel. It also not just jackets hitting the shelf in leather, it's all about the leather dress. We're talking belted maxi shirt dresses, pencil dresses, pleated midis and high-necked minis. Paired with other materials, such as a cable-knit jumper, tweed jackets or faux fur, glossy fabrics pack a serious punch!
The Trouser suit
This is the season to go shopping if you've struggled to find a trouser suit that flatters your figure so far. Jackets come in all shapes and sizes: doublebreasted, single-breasted, oversized, cropped, peplum and belted. When it comes to the trousers it comes in easy peasy to wear palazzo or angle length cigarette trousers. Add an air of heritage chic this season by nodding to the check trend. Plaid, Prince of Wales check or tartan in all forms are key. Some fashionista’s believe that the hard working LBD has taken a back seat with the sophistication of a trouser suit coming to the forefront. The high street options are endless, however you can also choose an investment suit that will stand the test of time. The choice is yours!
Brown is the new Black
This season has seen the emergence of traditionally "awkward" autumnal shades. Deep, rich tones are always popular for the AW collections and this season brown is revealed as the biggest trend of the season. In fact, it's a retail myth that you can't sell brown but designers have tried to challenge the myth this season. From chocolate shearling coats to toffeecoloured accessories shades of brown are everywhere. All you need to do is find the right hue for you! The only question to ask yourself now is which trend should I try first?

It’s October; Breast Cancer Awareness Month
What you can do to reduce your risk!
It’s October- so we are thinking Pink and Breast Cancer Awareness.
Approximately 2000 Irish women develop breast cancer each year. 1:10 women will develop breast cancer at some stage in their lives. While most the illness is more common in older women, it can occur in any age. Men can also develop breast cancer, although rarely. So can we do anything to reduce the risk of breast cancer? Lifestyle changes are scientifically shown to help to reduce risks of breast cancer. - Weight Management, Healthy Eating and Physical Exercise Being obese is strongly associated with developing breast cancer. There is also some evidence that women with breast cancer who are treated, but remain overweight, are more likely to develop recurrences. The best way to lose weight is with a combination of healthy eating and exercise. The best way to do this with the assistance of a dietician or personal trainer rather than crash / fad diets. You should be able to access dietary support via your GP. The more unprocessed foods you eat the better. Avoid high sugar foods. By doing regular exercise such as walking or swimming you will keep your weight healthy. You will also feel better- even when the weather isn’t good there are lots of options such as classes, swimming (if you don’t swim aqua aerobics or aqua jogging are options). Always build in some strength training. If you are worried about what’s right for you or a physiotherapist can guide you on that. - Limit Alcohol Intake Heavy alcohol intake is associated with developing breast cancer, and also other cancers. - Cigarette Smoking - People usually associate smoking with lung cancer. However, research is now showing an association between cigarette smoking and breast cancer. By giving up smoking you will improve your general health and help to reduce your risk of osteoporosis. Pharmacists have all the training to help you find the best aid to giving up smoking. In recent weeks, public health specialists in the UK and US have come out supporting e cigarettes as a safe tool for smoking cessation. In some situations your GP may offer prescription medications to help you.
44 | Connect Kerry | October 2018
- Toxins -Avoiding exposure to unnecessary toxins, radiation and chemicals is important incl BPAs. - Breastfeeding - Medical research suggests that breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer in the future. There are lots of supports nowadays to help women to successfully breastfeed.
What about being on the Pill? Current medical research does not show any link between being on the Pill and developing breast cancer. What about HRT? All international guidelines state that being on HRT, in itself, does not increase the risk of breast cancer. In cases where there is a strong family history advice from a breast cancer specialist can be sought. For women who need HRT their prescription can be reviewed at 5 years when there may be a marginal increase in risk. Vaginal oestrogen tablets are safe overall. Is there a genetic link? In cases where there is a strong family history of breast cancer a woman’s risk may be increased and extra checks can be put in place. In recent times there has been a lot of publicity surrounding the option of surgery to remove breast tissue in women with significant risks. This should not be undertaken lightly. Checking Yourself Out In the end nothing beats regular self-examination by women. Identifying lumps and bumps at an early stage is always important. Mammography is available through Breastcheck to women aged 50-64. While prevention is always best please remember that medical treatments are now so good that breast cancer is treatable and curable. HOW I GOT HERE .... Maire Twiss
By: Mary Lucey (Principal, Kerry College of Further Education)
Maire Twiss is a recent Sports Therapy Graduate and is employed as a Physiotherapy Assistant. As a newly qualified graduate, I wanted to establish how she successfully secured employment so quickly in this sector ….
About yourself… My name is Maire Twiss, I am 21 years old and come from Milltown, Co Kerry. I completed a two year Sports Therapy/Physiotherapy course in Kerry College of Further Education which qualified me to work as a Physiotherapy Assistant. I have been employed in a Physiotherapy Clinic in Tralee upon completing my course working as a Physiotherapy Assistant with the Kerry Senior Ladies and as a Masseuse with the All-Ireland winning Kerry Minor Boys. What does your job actually involve….. Physiotherapy is required for a variety of reasons such as illness, injuries, post-operation etc. A Physiotherapist sees patients and carries out a full assessment on each, followed by an appropriate individual treatment plan for each. This is when the Physiotherapy Assistant’s role comes in, helping patients with their treatments. Massage is a big part of some treatments as it can help to loosen out stiff, sore muscles. One element of my job that I find really rewarding and enjoyable is the fact that I am helping patients get immediate relief from discomfort and pain. What skills/characteristics are important in your job…. Good communication skills are essential as you are not only dealing with different patients during the day; but must also give good clear instructions to each patient. Confidence is vital as the patient needs to feel that they are in competent hands. Finally, good people skills are necessary to help reassure patients and make them believe you are going to help them. Did you always want to follow this career path.. From a very young age I have always loved sports and wanted to work in that environment. During secondary school, I completed work experience in a Physiotherapy clinic and enjoyed every minute of it. This ignited my passion for Physiotherapy. Upon leaving school, I initially applied to Carlow IT to study Physiology and Health Science. After completing one year of the course, I did gain an insight into what was involved in the Physiotherapy profession however, I found the course too theoretical and wanted a more practical hands-on course. I researched a variety of courses then identified the Sports
Therapy Course in Kerry College and that ticked all the boxes for me. As part of the course I got to volunteer and work with a local Physiotherapist and with the Kerry teams. I displayed an aptitude and passion for the work and this resulted in me being offered fulltime employment upon completion of my course. Did your family have an influence on your choices……. My family had a major influence on my career choices. They were huge sports fans and from a very young age, sport was a major part of my life. I was always brought along to football matches. Here I would be seated in the corner of the dressing room or in the corner of a dug out on the sideline. Being involved in sports at such a young, I saw the work of the physiotherapist during a sporting event, and knew it was an important role for an athlete’s fitness and to prevent injury and enhance recovery. I grew to love the sports environment and this made it very easy for me to decide on my future career. Upon reflection would you change any of the decisions you made… I wouldn't change anything because every course I completed, full-time or part-time resulted in both personal and professional development and enhanced my ability to function well in my role. What do you love about your job… Variety is what I love the most, meeting new people is definitely a major highlight of my job as I get to meet new patients on a daily basis. Also working in a variety of locations, sometimes I am in the clinic, sometimes in the dressing rooms, sometimes on the pitches….this ensure the job is so interesting. I love my job and am constantly striving to be better and better each day. Mary Lucey may be contacted at MaryLucey@kerryfe.ie or at 066-7121741.

Our Charity Partners for this year St.Brendan's NS, Blennerville It was a hotly contested race for our school of the year, the winning school benefits from the raffles held at all events hosted through the year with Connect and Blennerville School came out on tops in a very tight race at the end. We paid a visit recently to catch up with all there and find out about the school and what they plan to do with the funds we raise through your generosity at our events. Blennerville is based just outside Tralee in a picturesque setting, the school which has recently undergone a complete facelift was glowing in the autumn sun the day we arrived and we were warmly greeted by Louise Brassil, it really is a beautiful school and Louise speaks with pride of the benefits of the new makeover for her and the 19 teachers and 192 students, there is a real feel good feeling as you walk through the corridors and hear laughter and enjoyment coming from every classroom. When asked what they are going to do with the funds they tell us they have decided they are going to also like last year’s school increase the technology in the school and they hope to purchase some bean bags for the chill out areas in the school. Learning through fun and understanding is the core of this beautiful school and we are delighted to have them as our charity partner for the year, each event we host through this year will raise funds for Blennerville and we hope you all will play your part in supporting this and remember it could be a school in your area next year. Please take a minute to have a look at their Facebook page to see all they do with their students on a daily basis. We could write pages about the school but Connect Photographer John Walsh tells the stories beautifully here as he captures a day in the life of Blennerville National School.

UNFAIR DISMISSAL Please see below details of an interesting recent unfair dismissal case: • A bus driver requested to view the CCTV footage to prove his claim that he had been verbally abused by his manger a number of times that day. • While viewing the footage the Company noted that the bus driver was seen speaking on his phone while driving the bus. • The Company dismissed the driver stating ‘gross misconduct’. The Company advised that the bus driver was in clear breach of the mobile phone policy. At the WRC, the bus driver claimed that: • He had only been driving the bus for a matter of five seconds while occupying a parking space vacated by another bus. • He had been accepting an emergency call from his wife at the time and that he would never ordinarily answer his phone while behind the wheel. • He had no passengers on the bus at the time. • He was in a car park. • The WRC Adjudication Officer reviewed the CCTV footage and concluded that the movement of the bus was occupying a space that was vacated by another bus and it only lasted for a number of seconds. • It was suggested the bus driver’s actions did not warrant dismissal for ‘gross misconduct. • The Company did not follow best practice when the Operations Manager had conducted both the investigation and disciplinary processes in relation to the incident. • It was noted that the Company gave “little consideration to the complainant’s grounds of appeal” as the letter upholding the decision to dismiss was sent on the same day as the appeal. The bus driver was reinstated back into his job with back pay of his salary since his dismissal in August 2016. It is vital to note that regardless of whether you feel that the process used to terminate the employment was fair, the employee still has a right to have it referred to the WRC and the onus of proof is on you, as the employer, to prove that the dismissal was fair. If you require further information or advice on the above, please do not hesitate to contact us on (066)7102887.

Income Tax Returns As the Budget looms the Income Tax becomes the most pressing issue for many businesses. The process of gathering information together for their tax return and scraping together any money they can to pay tax bill is often very stressful. The deadline is fast approaching so don’t leave it too late. Income Tax 2017 Businesses have stabilised over last few years, so tax should be comparable to previous year but don’t rely on that assumption. Calculating your tax liability rather than guessing is a much better use of your time. Cash flow constraints often mean the full tax or preliminary tax liability cannot be paid. Where payment difficulties exist make a structured plan to deal with it. NB: Don’t file your return late and ignore letters requesting payment. This will usually cost you more and cause a lot more stress. Preliminary Tax for 2018 Preliminary Tax also becomes due on the 31st October. This is normally calculated based on 100% of the 2017 Tax liability. It can also be based on 90% of the liability for 2018 provided an accurate calculation can be made. Late Filing The deadline is the 31st October unless you are using ROS. There is an immediate 5% Penalty for failure to file your income tax return on time. This increases to 10% if your return is filed later than 2 months. In addition interest for late payment may also be charged by the Revenue. Revenue on Line (ROS) As is the norm now there is an extension until Thursday 14th November for anyone who is paying and filing online using ROS. NB: Extension only applies if full payment is made online when filing return.
