Natural Help for Back Pain Do you suffer with back pain? Is it Acute or Chronic? Acute pain begins suddenly and may be short lived, whereas chronic pain persists over a period of time. Either way, pain has the ability to turn any life into a living nightmare. What causes back pain? The short answer, LIFE! The back is a very large area of the body, and back pain can encompass a wide range of symptoms and underlying causes. You have a huge amount of nerves radiating from the spine, so the causes of back pain are numerous. Some people put off going to the doctor, because they think pain is a part of ageing, and nothing can help – this is not true. It is always best to see your GP if you have ongoing pain. The good news is that there is a variety of ways to treat pain. Some treatments may involve medication, but some do not. SOME COMMON CAUSES OF BACK PAIN MAY INCLUDE:

Do not stay too long sitting or standing or in any other position causing an overload or tenderness in the joints

Stress: There are many types of stress and they may affect the structures of the body. The body is very adaptable, but like everything, it has its limits, and when it reaches this limit, pain may be the unfortunate result. It could lead to LOWER or UPPER back pain. Most people are familiar with being “Stressed-Out”, which refers to mental or emotional stress, this kind of stress usually involves, worry, fear, anger, resentment, grief and other thoughts and emotions. The body reacts to this stress by tensing the muscles, which creates strain on the muscles and the skeleton, and may involve nerve irritation. Physical Stress: includes pain from trauma such as an accident, fall, sports injury or a sudden jolt or may be as a result of poor posture or sleeping in an awkward position. SOME OF THE NATURAL REMEDIES WHICH MAY HELP INCLUDE: OMEGA 3 ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS: May help to lessen the intensity of joint pain and stiffness and help lower inflammation within the body. ZINCUFLEX: Perfect for anyone looking for a natural way to help reduce inflammation and pain. Combination of Vitamin C, Ginger and Curcumin; which contributes towards the normal function of bones and cartilage. It may also help to control inflammation and pain associated with arthritis. QUERCETIN: Has potent anti-inflammatory activity DEVIL’S CLAW: Shows good results in cases of lower back pain, has anti-inflammatory properties TURMERIC: May be useful in reducing inflammation and symptoms such as pain and stiffness MAGNESIUM: A very effective muscle relaxant and also plays a role in the maintenance of normal bones and muscle function as well as helping to support energy release. REVIVE ACTIVE JOINT COMPLEX: An all in one solution to support cartilage, bone and connective tissue with powerful MSM to cool inflamed joint tissue

Until next time, stay healthy.

GLENDA GILSON A Woman of Many Talents By Marisa Reidy SHE’S known across the country as the face of TV3’s flagship entertainment show Exposé, but model and now successful jewellery designer, Glenda Gilson, is about to add a new and exciting role to her CV – that of devoted mum. The stunning TV star recently announced that she is pregnant with her first child and says she and husband Robert McNaughton are absolutely over the moon with the news. Chatting to Connect fresh from a Special Olympics photo-call, the mum-to-be says she is feeling great and cannot wait for her November arrival - but admits that she is naturally nervous about what lies ahead. “We are so, so thrilled and so excited but I’m not going to lie, I’m dead nervous too just because it’s all new to me,” Glenda said. “I’ve always wanted to be a mom and I love kids, but I suppose there’s part of me that doubts myself, but I think that’s natural. Robert and I are so excited but it’s going to be a game-changer for both of us. I just hope I won’t be a complete disaster,” she joked. Glenda rose to fame as a model, a career that began thanks to her mom, and saw her reach phenomenal heights in the Irish modelling circuit. “As a child, one of my mom’s great friends owned a modelling agency so naturally she sent me to castings all the time and basically it went from there. I started off when I was only three years old, stopped for a bit while I was at school, but it was always something I loved and so got back into it again years later,” Glenda explained. “It gave me a great platform and I honestly met loads of friends along the way and it was because of modelling that I eventually got into TV.” Now of course, modelling in Ireland is a lot different, Glenda explained, saying that when she was at the pinnacle of her career, it was a very tough slog. “We literally traipsed around town to ‘go-sees’ with our portfolio, hoping to get booked, but nowadays you don’t even have to leave your own home to get noticed. Social media has become such a huge platform for aspiring models now, where they can create and edit their shots before posting. We weren’t afforded that opportunity in my time, we just had to pose and that was it. 4 | Connect Kerry | July 2018

“Young guys and girls are far more confident too in front of the camera now, which is a great thing and the modelling industry here in Ireland is very friendly, so that helps a lot,” she said While Glenda loved her career as one of Ireland’s top models, and appreciated every opportunity it presented her, she admits that she always wanted to branch into TV. After working for a number of years on music channel Bubble Hits, Glenda moved on to TV3, where – 11 years later - she now fronts the hugely popular evening entertainment show Exposé. Often seen chatting with some of Hollywood’s A-list celebs on red carpets across the globe, Glenda says that the job is not all glitz and glam and takes a lot of work and commitment to get it right. “Obviously anyone in this kind of job has to be intelligent and composed and know what they’re doing,” Glenda says. “You can’t just walk into a room and start screaming in excitement or you’ll never again be allowed in. You have to be composed and have to have your questions ready and be professional, no matter who’s sitting in front of you. “Sometimes, you can be completely at ease with someone but other times it’s not so easy, so you have to be able to go with it.”

In her time at TV3 Glenda has been blessed to meet and interview a host of celebs, her favourite being Robbie Williams, Meryl Streep, Amanda Holden and surprisingly Simon Cowell, who she says is one of the ‘kindest, sweetest men’ she’s met in her career. But regular viewers of Expose will know that in her years as host and anchor, she has built up a great relationship with renowned crooner, Micheal Bublé. Their first encounter, however, was somewhat of an embarrassing one, Glenda admits. “A friend of mine was outside the venue before I was about to go in and do the interview and he told me that Michael loved motor racing and to be sure to ask him about it,” Glenda begins. “So, of course I did, and straight away he looked at me really confused and said: ‘Ahh, motor racing, no - where did you hear that?’ “I was left with a right humdinger and my friend still says it to me and laughs about it. It wasn’t very funny at the time I can assure you. I suppose because I’ve interviewed Michael so many times we just seem to have a really good relationship. Plus, he’s such a sweet guy and loves a good chat so it makes my job easier.” Anyone who knows Glenda Gilson knows that she takes very good care of herself, something that was instilled from her modelling days. But if you think her amazing physique comes from countless hours in the gym and an endless supply of carrot sticks, you’d be very wrong. “Because I was modelling for years I suppose I was always trained to look after myself, so it’s beaten into me in a sense from a young age, but I’m really not one for going to the gym or rigidly watching what I eat. I’m lucky that I have a very high metabolism and am very active so I believe in everything in moderation, but since I’ve gotten pregnant I’ve an appetite like a horse,” she joked. Glenda is also considered one of Ireland top style icons and admits that while she loves to mix high street fashion with a few choice designer pieces, the most important thing for her is to just go for what she likes. Speaking of designers, we had to ask her thoughts on Kerry’s very own designer to the stars, Don O’Neill - and unsurprisingly, she’s a big fan. “Ah I just love Don and (his husband) Pascal. They are the nicest guys around and I love everything Don does. I’m a huge fan, yea. Fair play to him for all he has done.” 6 | Connect Kerry | July 2018

Glenda’s most recent endeavour is designing her very own jewellery collection – G by Glenda Gilson – a project which she is extremely proud of. Her new summer collection is out now featuring a selection of beaded necklaces and bracelets. Previous collections also feature stunning silver pendants and bracelets, all which are available at www.gbyglendagilson.com. “I love jewellery, particularly necklaces and bracelets, and I found that people were admiring what I was wearing and what I liked so I thought, why not just bring out my own rage, so that’s what I did. I’m very proud of what I have come up with and I really enjoy when people wear and admire my pieces.” Asked what lies ahead for her in the future and whether or not she would ever considered moving across the water to pursue a TV career in the UK or US, Glenda says she is quite happy where she is. “Don’t get me wrong, I love travelling to the UK or New York or LA for work, but for me there is no place like home. I’m a real home bird and I’m so lucky that I love what I’m doing here right now, so long may it last. Ireland is where my heart is.”

Presentation to Moyderwell Mercy Primary School Connect were delighted to present 15 tablets to Moyderwell Mercy Primary School this month to be ready for the new school year in September. This was a result of fundraising efforts through the year. We in Connect decided last year that our events would support schools around the county, we hold a number of events throughout the year and before gave the proceeds of the raffles to a number of deserving charities. Moyderwell was chosen as the beneficiary for the rollout this year as my own son Thomas has just completed his primary education there and I was delighted to be able to launch the initiative with such a wonderful school. We raised over €3,500 from our events and this went to purchase tablets for the school, equipped with educational apps which allows school Management to include the technology as part of students learning for the next school year. We in Connect feel that learning about technology at a young age should help educate children on its safe use, like everything we do if we learn at a young age we learn the correct way, so hopefully this will help the students going through Moyderwell to understand technology better. Moira Quinlan Principal of Moyderwell welcomed the donation to the school saying: ‘ We are delighted to be associated with Connect on this great initiative that they have launched to support schools. We are lucky to be the first school recipients and we welcome the tablets that will enhance the daily life here. We thank Margaret and her team for her support’.

COULD YOUR SCHOOL BE OUR FUNDRAISING PARTNER FOR THE NEXT SCHOOL SEASON? Schools out and our call is out for the next school to join us! You can choose what your school needs most from our fundraisers and we will do our best to support the cause as much as we can. SO HOW DO YOU BECOME THAT SCHOOL ... Email us to margaret@connectpublications.ie or message us on social media with the school you want to nominate and why ...... and we will choose the TOP 5 NOMINATED in August and put it to a public vote with the winning school announced on September 3rd. We look forward to hearing from you all!

Recovery Haven Kerry Founder MARIAN BARNES SHE’S the 2018 Connect Kerry Community Champion, but Recovery Haven Kerry founder Marian Barnes is almost embarrassed by all the fuss being made of her since her win last month. Anyone who knows Marian knows that she is probably the most humble lady you are ever likely to meet, and that the passion, dedication and love she has for the charity she founded back in 2009 comes purely from a desire to help those going through cancer and their families – and not about seeing her name in lights. That being said, Marian is absolutely overwhelmed and honoured to have been chosen by judges as this year’s Community Champion, saying that she feels truly humbled, given the ladies she was up against. “I just couldn’t believe that I won because all the ladies in the category deserved the award too. They have all done amazing work in the community, so for me to win was a real honour,” Marian said. “I can’t thank Mags (Kissane) and the judges enough because my win brings huge awareness of Recovery Haven, which is great. I am truly honoured and feel very privileged.” Well known the length and breadth of the county for her unyielding charity work, Knocknagoshel native Marian worked for 20 years as the Breast and Stoma Care Nurse in Kerry General Hospital until her retirement in 2012. Through interaction with others in the profession, it became apparent to Marian that there was a lack of professional support for patients once they had departed from the medical model of diagnosis and treatment, with many left worried and alone. With that at the forefront of her mind, Marian wanted to create a safe ‘haven’ where these people could get that support, and so in early 2009 the plans started in earnest. A committee was formed, a premises was purchased with donated funds that had become available when Breast Cancer services were transferred to Cork - and by November 2009, Recovery Haven Kerry was a registered charity. “FÁS came on board and transformed the 12 | Connect Kerry | July 2018

premises into a wonderful, tranquil place for welcoming and helping our visitors, to allow them to regain control of their lives,” Marian explained. “After much work and several fabulous fundraising events by the people of Kerry, Recovery Haven officially opened on September 3rd 2010.” To this day, the charity continues to offer caring and therapeutic services to those who have experienced cancer, their families and carers in a tranquil environment in Tralee - with outreach services in Killarney and most recently Killorglin. Since the foundation Marian has worked tirelessly on the ground to support, promote and fundraise for the charity she dearly loves, and despite stepping down from the Board of Directors this March after almost 10 years, she continues to form an integral part of the busy team. “When we set about creating Recovery Haven, I could never have imagined just how important a facility it would become to so many people around the county,” Marian said. “We now have outreach services in Killarney and Killorglin, as well as the main house in Tralee, which is wonderful.” Knowing just how much the charity is helping people is also hugely important to Marian. “ I feel so privileged when I meet someone who has been though the trauma of cancer and has used the centre and are now getting on with their lives thanks to the support and understanding they received at Recovery Haven,” she said. “I also get most satisfaction from driving past Recovery Haven and knowing that I was part of creating a much needed service that I hope will continue to grow and flourish.” Since opening its doors, Recovery Haven Kerry has continued to deliver caring and therapeutic services to those who are experiencing cancer, their families and carers free of charge in a tranquil and safe environment. Last year, there were just over 2,000 attendances to the cancer support centres across the county – a record for the charity – and already this year, attendances have reached over 1,000, with counselling sessions increasing by 100 per cent in the first five months of the year.

The charity also provide free complementary therapy sessions such as Reiki, Reflexology and Massage; we run a men’s and women’s cancer support group, bereavement support, arts and crafts, mindfulness courses, Pilates classes, walking groups, a wig clinic fitting service, HSE bra and prosthesis fitting service and information talks. While Marian’s dedication and commitment to the charity she helped build from humble beginnings is inspiring to everyone who works alongside her, an ever-humble Marian says that the charity simply would not function without its amazing volunteers, fundraisers and manager, Siobhan MacSweeney. “Without our volunteers and Siobhan as manager, we simply could not open our doors. It’s these people who oversee the day to day running of Recovery Haven that keep the doors open and I am extremely grateful to them for their ongoing support.” Marian also paid tribute to the people of Kerry, whose goodwill and incredible generosity never cease to amaze her. “Unfortunately, we don’t get any funding from the HSE so our fundraisers and the people of Kerry who continues to support us are the ones we really need to thank,” she said, “The support we receive is overwhelming and I just want to acknowledge that and say how grateful we really are.”

The Newly-Crowned Miss Kerry BRÓGAN O’SULLIVAN IF ever you needed proof of just how much positive mental health and a determination to succeed can help overcome the tough world of naysayers, then look no further than the newlycrowned Miss Kerry, Brógan O’Sullivan. The stunning 20-year old Tralee woman encountered – and thankfully conquered – an onslaught of ‘mean girl’ mentality in her teens, but says that entering the Miss Kerry competition was not about getting revenge on those girls who made her life so tough, but to prove to herself that she was worth it. Brógan doesn’t want to use the word ‘bullies’ as she feels it gives those girls power which they don’t deserve, but says there were certain people who made life very difficult for her in her late teens. “Let’s just say I came across that mean girl mentality from a lot of people who humiliated me in public and on social media and who, even to this day, still try to put me down,” Brógan told Connect. “I left school early and my confidence was knocked quite badly over the past few years, so entering Miss Kerry was about doing it for my confidence.”

Brógan entered the Miss Kerry competition a few years ago but was unsuccessful, but says entering again was something she wanted to do for herself. “I was still unsure even a few days before the competition and once I decided, I only told my mom and sister, no one else,” she said. “It was one of the best decisions I made because I just felt I was standing there with these other girls rather than against them, and no one was knocking each other.” 8 | |CC onnect KK erry || MJarch 2018 16 onnect erry uly 2018

By Marisa Reidy

Hearing her named being called out as the 2018 Miss Kerry was an absolute dream come true for Brógan, who is still reeling from the shock. “I was absolutely shocked and delighted when my name was called. I couldn’t believe it. I was always such a quite person who, even at sports days, didn’t want to get involved for fear of losing. So this was amazing,” she said. “It was such a fabulous feeling to get up there and smile, with all these other brilliant girls. I was told so many times by so many people that I’d never go anywhere without a Leaving Cert, so this was very special. ” Despite finishing school early, a determined Brógan went on to do a PLC course in Applied Social Studies, graduating this summer with seven distinctions and two merits. She is now hoping to secure a place at IT Tralee this Autumn to study Social Studies. She is adamant to use both her course – and her Miss Kerry title – to help promote positive mental health and is keen to visit schools and speak to younger children about the issue. “I really want to raise awareness around mental health and it’s something I believe needs to start at a young age. We need to start talking to our children about it earlier than we are at the moment,” Brógan said. “Unfortunately we live in a non-realistic world and, for me, I really want to work with children and promote positive mental health.” Her desire to work with children undoubtedly comes from her inspirational mum, Edel Lawlor, who owns the awardwinning child and adolescent play therapy service, Expressive Play in Kilflynn. Edel is also the founder of the renowned Kilflynn Fairy Festival, where Brógan proudly takes on the persona of the hugely popular and loveable character, Ruby the Rainbow Fairy. “I’ve done fairy workshops with mum and I get to see firsthand the benefits and how it keeps children’s heads and hearts happy,” Brógan explained. “We speak to children about keeping themselves happy, how they should and shouldn’t act and get them to go around in a circle and say

something nice about themselves and each other. It’s great to be part of. “The fairy festival is something we are all so proud of too because it’s an amazing feeling to see these children really believe in magic and look so, so happy.” Following on from her Miss Kerry win in June, Brógan will now go on to represent her county in the Miss Ireland competition in September – a role she says she will truly embrace. “If this allows me to raise awareness of mental health then that is brilliant,” she said. “It’s not about a beauty pageant or a title for me, it’s about inner beauty and helping people find that.”

Catherine’s Fashion Fix

By Catherine Keane

With summer finally kicking in and the sun making more frequent appearances what better way to embrace the new season than with a new pair of sunglasses. Once simply used for their sun-shielding properties, today sunglasses have taken on a new status: that of a fashion staple. And even when it’s not sunny, they’re still a useful way to hide those under eye bags after a night out. They’re not just a seasonal trend, but an all-year-round must.

This season sunglasses have got a complete makeover. People are certainly breaking out of their comfort zones that bit more when it comes to eyewear in recent years, and this season is no different. The boring functional glasses have been ditched and we have seen a return of mini-lens, colourful glasses, embellishment and much more. This season, they’re cooler than ever. Sunglasses are the kind of thing you can justify spending on as if you buy them right, you’ll have them forever. But, if you’re looking for a quick fix, there are plenty budget friendly pairs on the high street that will do the job. So whether you’re looking for an everyday pair of shades or something a little more special, I have picked some of my favourite trends to take your shade collection to the next level!

Tinted

One of the biggest trends of the season is definitely the tinted lenses from pink to light blue and Tinted sunshine yellow but orange is definitely Sunglasses.ie coming out on top. Thin metal frames work best €91 for this trend, but when it comes to lens shapes and sizes, the sky is the limit. Wear them as your favourite everyday glasses or pop them out whenever you need an extra dose of cool.

Micro

Cool Flat Top Sunglasses

Stay in style this season with a pair of trendy flat top sunglasses. This style works really well for both men and women, and it’s got a very cool allure Flat top thanks to its angular details. Paul Galvin

Retro Revival

There’s no denying that fashion is always looking to a bygone era, and this year it has never been truer. While sunglasses are now definitely smaller than their oversized cousins of the past, 2018 has seen retro revival. This year, the industry sees a shift towards interesting material combinations with a throwback to the 70s and 80s.

Bling & Embellishment

Catherine x

It’s all about the tiny little glasses this season. Even though the small frame isn’t really big enough to give you the best sun protection, every fashion-forward celebrity has been spotted wearing this style. Trendy and easy to style with an array of outfits, micro sunglasses are a staple of style worn by the fashion savvy, so you better get them while they’re hot.

Oversized

Oversized Sunglasess.ie €133

Well, it’s time to welcome back the bling and embellishment because it seems that this bedazzling trend is making a huge comeback. PEARLY WHITES AN DR MARCAS MAC DOMHNAILL

LINKS BETWEEN GUM HEALTH AND HEART DISEASE Tooth loss can often indicate that a person has a history of inflammatory oral diseases. In a study carried out by the University of Helsinki in conjunction with The National Institute for Health and Welfare, an association was found between tooth loss and future cardiovascular (heart) events, diabetes and death. The researchers suggest that the number of missing teeth could be a useful additional indicator for general medical practitioners, when individual risk factors for chronic diseases are assessed. The results showed: • More than five missing teeth increased the risk for coronary heart disease events and heart attacks by as much as 140%; and • More than nine missing teeth indicated an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases (51%), diabetes (31%) and death (37%). Non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes are the most common cause of death worldwide. They are known to be linked with inflammatory oral diseases, such as periodontitis (gum disease). Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease in the gums, which appears as gingival bleeding, increased tooth mobility and deepened periodontal pockets. It may result in the loss of teeth if left untreated. We advise everybody to attend their dentist on a regular basis to check for gum disease and treat it, thus reducing their chances of getting heart diseases and diabetes. Beir Bua agus Beannacht.

Boundaries

When we set boundaries, we do so in order to put limits on our behaviour or that of others around us. The first step in doing this is to know what our limits are. A big factor in establishing our limits is to understand that social pressure has a huge influence on us. How often do we hear that “everybody does it”, or “there’s nothing wrong with it”? Of course, just because everybody is doing something doesn’t mean that it’s right for us. We have to learn to listen to our own instincts and make our own decisions. One way of listening to our instincts is to measure if something causes us discomfort. Are you uncomfortable about doing something, but go along with it because other people seem to be ok with it? If it causes you discomfort or stress, then it might be worth looking at your boundaries and your ability to set them. Another indicator is if you experience resentment after the event. If you resent somebody for asking you to do something, it might be because you are unable to set a boundary that would allow you to say no. If you agree to do something and resent it afterwards, that is also a sign that your boundaries are poor. It can be helpful to measure these feelings on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being slight or negligible and 10 being acute and serious. Try to evaluate your degree of discomfort and resentment in different situations. If you are experiencing higher than a 4 or 5 on a regular basis in relation to a particular area of your life, then you might need to look at the boundaries you have set in that area.

POLYCYSTIC OVARIAN SYNDROME: What’s New BY: DR MARY MCCAFFREY FRCOG, CONSULTANT OBSTETRICIAN / GYNAECOLOGIST, THE SCOTIA CLINIC, TRALEE AND KERRY GENERAL HOSPITAL

Polycystic ovarian syndrome, usually referred to as PCOS, is a complex hormonal disorder affecting at least 1 in 10 women. It is the most common hormonal disorder in women and is particularly common in the Western counties of Ireland. PCOS can affect girls as young as 10 years of age. Medical research now demonstrates that PCOS is a genetic condition; relatives of women diagnosed with PCOS should be carefully monitored for PCOS. Male relatives are not even immune; they can be at risk for related metabolic issues. The most recent research published shows that mothers who smoke and are obese during pregnancy are more likely to deliver daughters who will go on to develop PCOS. Who Might Have PCOS? Girls and women with PCOS may develop any of the following symptoms: • Bad acne • Facial hair or excess body hair • Loss of head hair- some women report clumps of hair coming out when they wash or shower • Irregular or absent periods • Weight gain and difficulty losing weight Many young girls with PCOS present in mental health clinics with anxiety and depression- this could be related to body image issues; poor self-esteem is very common in these young girls. We also know that girls with PCOS may present with eating disorders. This may arise because of difficulties in controlling their weight. One aspect of the hormonal problem is that women with PCOS are more “insulin resistant” and break down carbohydrates less efficiently than other people. As a result, women store their carbohydrate intake as fat. Later on in life women may have difficulty conceiving. Diabetes also occurs more commonly in pregnancies of women with PCOS. How Would My Doctor Diagnose PCOS? The diagnosis of PCOS is based on a good medical history of any of the symptoms mentioned above. Combined with a series of detailed hormone blood tests and an ultrasound of the ovaries a diagnosis can be made How Do I Cure My PCOS? PCOS is never really cured. The ovaries remain polycystic but the symptoms can be managed. The cornerstone of treating the condition is to keep weight gain under control. A low carb/ high protein type of diet, combined with exercise, is the best way forward. 26 | Connect Kerry | July 2018

Symptoms are treated individually: • The Pill is a cornerstone treatment in many cases as it helps to “inactivate” male hormone • An older “tried and trusted” diabetic medication called metformin (Glucophage) is also used, particularly for women trying to conceive. Another medication called myo-inositol is occasionally used. • A prescription cream called Vaniqa can help facial hair. A medication called Spironolactone is also useful, particularly for loss of head hair. • Cosmetic and aesthetic treatments such as electrolysis, laser hair removal can be useful but the underlying hormonal issue must be treated. When Should Treatment Start and Finish? It is never too early to commence treatment. One Spanish doctor has produced got research on treating girls as young as 8-10 years; this is important as the condition can have debilitating consequences both physically and emotionally for teenagers. As the underlying condition always remains, lifelong care and monitoring is necessary. We know that women with PCOS should have at least 4 periods a year; if not they can be at risk of womb cancer. Heart Disease, Type 2 Diabetes and breast cancer are also long term risks for women with poorly controlled PCOS. Key Points • PCOS is a very common condition in Ireland • It is treatable but treatment should start as early as possible in life. HOW I GOT HERE .... Stephanie Lynch OnTheQT.ie

By: Mary Lucey (Principal, Kerry College of Further Education) Stephanie Lynch is 28 and Founder of a Company called ontheQT. It is a travel blog, vlog and digital marketing company. She is a globe trotter who is passionate about travel. She loves to showcase her adventures, hidden gems and unique places around the world as she discovers them! She has travelled to over 90 different countries, written 1000’s of blog posts and had a lot of fun along the way. Stephanie is a travel blogger and content creator at OnTheQT. ie with a background in the TV industry. In 2013 she set up OnTheQT.ie a travel blog, vlog and digital marketing company which has seen Stephanie win Cork’s Best Young Entrepreneur 2015, while also winning Ireland’s Best travel blog 2017. Tell us About Yourself I studied TV, Radio & New Media Broadcasting and throughout my time at college I gained experience in the production world by working with a range of different production companies and on a number of different RTE series. In my final year as a student I decided to enter the Young Entrepreneur Programme. This gave me a taste of the entrepreneurial world. Upon graduation, I decided to take my future into my own hands and decided to bring a business idea I had to life. I was accepted into the Ignite graduate business innovation programme at UCC. Through mentorship with leading entrepreneurs, workshops and valuable advice, I turned my innovative idea into a successful creative business and launched OnTheQT.ie. OnTheQT.ie is a worldwide travel content creation company, digital marketing company and an award-winning travel blog and vlog. Describe your Industry Sector The online world is fast. You have to be a few steps ahead all the time. You have to be creative and willing to take risks. Nothing comes without hard work. I always say the harder you work, the luckier you get. What plans did you have when leaving school? I went to school in St. Angela’s College in Cork. I graduated from College with First Class Honours Degree. I remember leaving school and knowing I wanted to work in the TV world, that is why I studied TV, Radio and New Media Broadcasting. I knew that I needed to gather as much hands on experience in the video production world as I could so that was my goal. Throughout my studies, I also gained lots of experience working with production companies and as a runner on different RTE series. Did your family influence your decisions? My family are very supportive and always encouraged me to pursue my dreams. My parents would have both been 28 | Connect Kerry | July 2018

entrepreneurial and I always admired that growing up. They are my number one supporters. They always encourage me to dream big. When did you first become passionate about your current career? I knew I always wanted to work in the video production world and loved every minute of growing my skills in College. I also loved working on set and seeing the behind the scenes of many series. Throughout college there was always a focus on entrepreneurship which I loved. We were encouraged to think outside the box. I decided to mix my creative skills with my business skills to create a business that I love. I made a career for myself doing something I love. I always had a passion for the production world. I decided to make a career and mix two things that I love together – my passion for creating videos and my passion for travel. I think if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. Passion is something you need to have in your career to succeed. Did you always believe you were on the correct career path? I wouldn’t say I was ever on the wrong path as I use my TV skills every day in the online world, creating online TV shows. The online world of content creation and online series really expanded since leaving college. It opened up big opportunities. I saw an opportunity to bring my business outside of Ireland and build a global audience online and I took it. If you had your time over again after leaving school, what would you change or do differently? I wouldn’t change a thing as it has made me the person I am today. I have learned from mistakes and grown a business I am very proud of. I also get to say I love my job and to me that’s the most important thing. Music in the Kingdom By: Lisa Curran

This month I am focussing in on local talent, local bands, local venues that are giving local musicians regular gigs and being just an overall support to their years of hard work and dedication. To be able to perform in your own area and get support from your own community is a huge deal, when you are booking music for an event (shop openings, weddings, birthday parties etc) please consider your local and regular visiting musicians first (they will also probably cut you a deal in price because it’s on their own doorstep!) kerry is filled with an abundance of talent of all genres from classical to rock and of all ages so get behind your local talent. .......................................................................

RENOVATOR Renovator are one of Ireland's best party bands, who always keep the dance floor hopping by playing a mixture of modern hits as well as classic rock anthems. RENOVATOR are Celebrating their 10th Birthday for the Month of July with a selection of Venues in their Home County before heading back out on the road again in August for their next tour. Catch them at a venue near you for a Great night’s entertainment. Sat 7th July - The exchange Inn, Ballybunion Sat 14th July - Castlegregory Summer Festival Fri 20th July - McSorleys, Killarney Check them out on Facebook for more info regarding bookings. .......................................................................

KIRBYS BROGUE INN TRALEE KIRBYS are situated in the centre of Tralee, a bit of a landmark to all who live in or indeed visit the town, (they have wonderful food too so you could really make an evening of it in the one venue) their musicians are regulars throughout the summer 7 nights a week! and their line up is: Monday: Danny Goggin Tuesday: Ross & Noel Wednesday: Trad Session Thursday: The Rockettes Friday: Dreams of Freedom Saturday: Early Trad Session 8 - 10, Followed by Various Acts 10.30 - 1.30 Sunday: Trad Session

PHIL N THE BLANKS Phil N The Blanks are an electrifying, dynamic, multi-talented group of musicians, ready to perform for any occasion. They specialise in weddings and functions in Munster. They will be playing in McSorleys Killarney this July 22nd and 23rd. .......................................................................

THE K-TOWN BAR AND GRILL KILLARNEY This beautiful venue is set right in the centre of Killarney town and pride themselves in hiring local bands, cover artists and Djs for their events each week. They promote their upcoming gigs over on their Facebook page but here are some highlights of what they have coming up. July 7th- live music all day for the ring of Kerry cycle (all local kerry talent) July 21st - the Irish brigade €5 entry for a great night of Irish music with a twist. SAN MINIATO: Quality Early

Years Education – A Tuscan Perspective On Sunday June 10th, 2018 I had the privilege of travelling to San Miniato, Italy in my capacity as an Early Childhood Care and Education Teacher with Kerry College of Further Education, with a group of 15 like-minded individuals from the four provinces of Ireland, on the Early Childhood Ireland, Erasmus+ Léargas Study Trip in pursuit of international perspectives on quality within the Early Years Education Sector. Our host Barbara at La Bogetta Di Gepetto afforded us the opportunity to visit three unique Early Years settings for children 0-3 years old. The image of the child as a protagonist of learning and a competent being is at the heart of the San Miniato approach. Vertical grouping of children from babies to 3 years old is the norm. Children are active agents in their learning and the oldest children support the development of the youngest children in an almost ‘familial’ way. Early Years Educators in Italy must have a minimum qualification of a 3 year Degree to work with children aged 0-3 years. In contrast Educators of the 3-6 years olds Pre-school children are required to have a 5 year degree , this enables the educators to teach children up to age 11 within the Primary School System. Similar to Irish culture, the family is at the heart of our traditions and theirs. The Early Years Education system in San Miniato not only values families, it also embraces and includes families in the activities in the centre. The parents attend workshops and create artefacts for display in the setting, they provide natural materials and resources for use within the setting and are the actors in the end of year dramatization of popular stories within the centres. Children are supported to engage in meaningful indoor and outdoor activities, predominantly child led. The use of natural materials within the settings afforded the opportunity of rich open ended activities in which the child led the way both individually and cooperatively. Their unique journey within the service is recorded in individual diaries from the moment of entry to the service until the child transitions to pre-school at the age of 3. Interestingly when children enter pre-school at the age 3, classes are segregated by age, this is different to the vertical grouping within our pre-schools and to our Aistear Curriculum, and perhaps in this regard our way is better.

too much for children . Meal times within the schools that we had the privilege to visit were social times, with neatly laid tables of real delph and cutlery, glass jugs of water for the children to pour, serving dishes with serving spoons for children to use for each of the courses on offer. A true celebration of food, family and culture. It was an eye opening experience to see the children navigate the activity with ease, while also supported by educators eating the same meal with the children. From an Irish Perspective, many aspects of our provision are excellent particularly as we embrace the Aistear Curriculum Framework (NCCA, 2009) and Síolta, National Quality Framework (CECDE, 2006). However, the vision of the child 0-3 years as a protagonist of their learning, an independent capable child from the youngest and earliest moments gives food for reflection and thought, and warranted a visit to Ikea to purchase new resources such as real glasses and delph for our nursery to reflect home from home at meal times at my setting at Mounthawk Montessori School & Busy Bees Nursery! It was truly a worthwhile CPD experience and will influence future quality provision for the youngest children in our nurseries . Through the reciprocal opportunity to present and share the Irish Perspective of both Curriculum & Quality Frameworks to our hosts during our visit, hopefully we too can influence the quality of the early years provision (3-6 years) of our Italian neighbours. For further information please contact Susan Quirke-Crowley: 086-8153757

The San Miniato approach to the provision of Early Years Education for the 0-3 years offers food for thought around quality delivery for younger children in Ireland. Similar to the Montessori Approach it lends itself to the belief that one should never do anything for a child that they can do for themselves. Perhaps as educators we inadvertently may do Connect Kerry | July 2018 | 33

Connect ONLINE BY: KEN TOBIN, Marketing Strategy Consultant

BUILD TRUST ONLINE Social Media is a two-way street for communication that can engage your customers. Your interactions help build trust and a form a community around your business. You need trust to create a strong relationship with your customers and to encourage repeat purchases and referrals. Social media is a platform for a community of people, and they are more likely to trust those who are helpful than those who are not. Being helpful means commenting and answering questions. It also means sharing helpful content from a wide array of sources, not just your own. Each time you post an article or a link that promotes one of your products, services, or articles, you’re being self-promotional. If everything you’re sharing on social is about you, then your trust with your followers will decline. In order to respond to people, you need to actively monitor your social media platforms for mentions of your business and also of the services you offer. When you’re responding to questions, do it quickly and be genuine. WORKPLACE STRESS Hans Seyle the physician coined the term stress as

‘The non-specific response of the body to any demand for change’.

Our body has been designed to respond naturally to threats in our environment. Once upon a time this threat may have been due to an attack, war or another reason for us to believe our safety was being threatened. We were designed to respond to this threat in a fight, flight or freeze fashion. When this occurs the sympathetic nervous system is activated and hormonal changes in the body occur. So what makes us stressed these days? Every day we face stressors now; tight deadlines, long commutes, lack of autonomy in work, aging parents, long hours, relationship difficulties, sick children etc. What is important when it comes to stress is not what happens to you but how you perceive what happens to you. People will not always react the same to life events - perception will determine the response. Therefore how we perceive the threat will determine how we react to the threat. When we become stressed there is many influences on different areas of our system: Psychological, Behavioural and Physiological. Psychological effects may be anxiety, depression, low selfesteem & burnout. Behavioural effects may be excessive smoking or substance abuse. Physiological effects may include high blood pressure, muscle tension, headaches or ulcers. There are many ways of coping with stress in the workplace and in our whole lives. Practice creativity, exercise, manage our time, talk to someone, keep a stress diary, get more sleep, avoid caffeine, practice abdominal breathing and relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation. Using these coping systems activates the Parasympathetic nervous system. This reduces the body to its natural state and controls the balance within the body. The Parasympathetic nervous system activates the rest and digest mode and allows the body to relax and repair. The stress hormones go back to normal and balance is restored in the body. The immune system and digestion system work effectively again, the heart rate drops and muscles relax. Activating the parasympathetic nervous system helps the body become resistant to the negative effects of stress. Employers have a duty of care to employees and this is reinforced in the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act, 2005. It would be wise for employers to have a procedure in place to tackle the issue should they identify an employee experiencing such stress. This not only empowers the employer to take action to help the employee, but it also shows the employee experiencing stress and other co-workers that the company cares and that they can help alleviate stress where possible.

Foreign Property – Tax Issues As we prepare for the summer holidays, for those lucky enough to own a foreign property, it can be a time to relocate for an overdue holiday! Foreign properties are often a great investment, but they do raise some tax issues as outlined below: Rented Foreign Property Foreign rents are normally liable to tax in both Ireland and where they are located. Please note a tax credit or deduction from rent will be given for the tax deducted. For higher earners, the tax paid in other countries may not be sufficient to cover the tax due in Ireland. Expenses which are tax deductible include Mortgage interest, insurance, property management fees, repairs, advertising or similar expenses. It is important to claim these to avoid overpaying tax. NB: Ireland and most European countries now exchange data. Therefore it is imperative that tax returns in different countries are consistent. Capital Gain Tax Although not located in Ireland, foreign property disposals are normally liable to Capital Gains Tax in Ireland, if you are Irish resident. It is imperative that the tax position is checked, particularly for properties, which have increased in value over time. It can happen that little or no foreign tax is applicable on a sale, but substantial Irish tax could arise, therefore tax planning is important. NB: Losses on foreign properties may be allowable against Irish Capital Gains so don’t ignore when a loss occurs!
