It’s been a busy March, we had a wonderful day once again at the Rose Hotel for our Connect Kerry Hair and Beauty Awards, recognising the industry in the county it was great fun and we are delighted to bring you a taste of the day here in this issue. Everyone partied long into the night and we look forward to seeing you all again next year.

Mary Black is coming to Kerry once again for a concert and she tells Marisa about her love for the kingdom. We also chat to Kerry Business Woman Cathriona Rohan celebrating 15 years in business she tells us the secret of her success.

And it’s no time for rest here in the office as the search for ladies for The Connect Kerry Women in Business Awards is now underway for the fourth year. We have lots of wonderful nominations coming in and we are still taking nominations so we invite you to nominate yourself or a lady you feel worthy of a nomination. While we all welcome the longer brighter evenings and it may encourage us to enjoy a little time outdoors in the fresh air, unfortunately, it can cause misery for the 15-20% of hayfever suffers in Ireland. Also known as Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis, hayfever is an allergic reaction to airborne substances, such as tree, flower and grass pollen that gets into the upper respiratory passages, nose, sinus, throat and also the eyes.

The pollen that enters the bloodstream through the tissue of the throat, lungs and gut, is regarded by our immune systems as foreign and potentially dangerous, so it rushes to defend it, resulting in the release of lots of histamines.

Histamine irritates the respiratory passage causing swelling and inflammation that produce typical hayfever symptoms, including itchy watery eyes, a bunged up or runny nose, frequent sneezing and coughing.

Many people take anti-histamines and other medications which offer relief, alternatively there are plenty of natural remedies available, which can help to ease the unpleasant symptoms of hayfever.

Mary Black and

her love of the Kingdom

By Marisa Reidy SHE is undoubtedly one of Ireland’s best known and much loved singer songwriters and despite having been in the spotlight for over 40 years, Mary Black is every bit as enthusiastic about singing and performing now as she has ever been.

Chatting to Connect ahead of her INEC gig on April 13th, the Dubliner says she really loves coming to Killarney and has a genuine fondness for her Kerry fans.

“The INEC and Killarney have been part and parcel of my Irish tour for nearly 20 years now and I love it,” she said. “I find the audience in Killarney really enthusiastic, which is great. I can honestly say, I’ve never had a bad night at the INEC. It’s wonderful.”

It’s no secret, however, that Mary’s love of Kerry and its people spans further than the Killarney stage, with the star admitting that despite owning a home in West Kerry, she doesn’t get to stay there nearly as often as she would like.

Mary explained that her grá for The Kingdom goes way back to when her three children – Conor, Danny and Róisin – were very young, when they would visit here on their summer holidays with family friends. The family in question, she explained, were the Knox family, whose son Graham is still best friends and band mates with her son Danny in The Coronas.

“Our family and the Knoxes used to take a week around Ireland every year when our kids were very small, as they were around the same age, and on one particular occasion we travelled to West Kerry and in the Feothanach direction,” Mary told Connect.

“We rented what was then The Round House, overlooking the sea, and used to love relaxing there every evening watching the sunset. We absolutely fell in love with the place and began to rent out the same place for years after that.”

Eventually, Mary and her husband Joe and the same family friends bought a site in the area, where their home away from home now stands almost 20 years on. Mary says she loves spending time here as it offers her a peaceful get away from her hectic schedule and a place where she always receives a céad mile fáilte.

Interestingly, the area also brings out the artist inside, she says – more so than anywhere else she visits.

“Whatever it is about the place, I love to paint when I’m in the house in Kerry,” Mary explained. “I wouldn’t be a great painter by any means, but I do love to paint and whatever it is about that place, it just brings that side out of me.”

Having toured the world extensively for decades, Mary has now limited herself to one Irish tour per year, saying that being away can take its toll – something she particularly felt years ago when her children were growing up.

What she very much appreciates here is that she is treated just like everybody else when she’s out and about in West Kerry and Dingle town – something she loves about the Kerry folk.

“Being away from the kids when they were small was the toughest part of it all, as four weeks on the road is a long time in a child’s life,” she said, “Saying that, I had great back up from my husband, my mom, and Frances [her equally famous sister] and I don’t regret doing what I did, because I was always a hands on mother when I was home. But it wasn’t easy with a small family that’s for sure. It broke my heart at times.”

what she missed out on.

“The fact that I’ve taken a step back from touring [overseas] means that I have more time to be a hands-on granny and I love it, it’s fantastic,” she said. “You often hear it said that you don’t always appreciate your own kids when they are small because you’re on the run and juggling everything and I certainly see that now. There are many milestones that I sadly don’t remember from my own kids growing up, but since becoming a grandmother I notice all these things and it’s a wonderful feeling to see everything they do and say. I just love to see their faces coming in the door.”

Now mid way through her ‘Mary Black sings Jimmy Mac tour' – which sees Mary perform Jimmy McCarthy’s most renowned songs, plus several other favourites – the Dublin singer says she is often amazed that she is still doing what she loves to do all these years on.

“I remember once asking Joe if he thought I’d still be performing when I’m 40,” Mary laughs. “I’m a long way from 40 now and I’m still here, doing what I love, so yea it’s amazing, even though I do know it can’t go on forever.”

Mary says she is fascinated that, decades later, her fans are still out in force at every gig – and says she is particularly shocked by the amount of young women who now follow her.

“I’m amazed that the audience now is as good, if not better, than it was at the beginning and I’m loving the groups of young women who are coming to the show, singing songs and belting out the chorus. It’s brilliant and I could never have dreamt of a career with such longevity.”

Coming from such a musical family herself, it came as little surprise that all three of her children developed her love of music – her son Danny and daughter Róisín probably the most well known.

Danny O’Reilly is of course the front man of super popular Irish band The Coronas, while Róisín – who goes by the stage name, Róisín O – is also blazing a trail as a hugely talented artist.

Their talent and ability is something that Mary noticed - and nurtured – from a very early age, with the proud mum now revelling in their success.

“I remember always encouraging them to write songs and learn instruments and if they wanted to go to lessons or whatever I would always take them and encourage them. Danny was singing

before he could walk almost, and because he was under my mother’s wing a lot of the time as an infant I’ve no doubt she was a big influence,” Mary said.

“I still remember the words of a song Danny wrote on the way home from school in first year,” Mary said, before singing the chorus of the song.

“For him and Róisín it was part of who they are, in their DNA I guess.”

Oozing with pride of their success, Mary insisted that they worked hard for what they have achieved and went into the music business with their heads very much screwed on – never using their mother’s name to get places.

“They went out there and worked so hard and knew that they would have to be willing to do the work for little or nothing at the beginning. They weren’t blinkered and knew it was going to be tough, so I am extremely proud of them,” she said.

Looking ahead to her Killarney gig on April 13th, Mary said she is confident of another party-like atmosphere that has now become part and parcel of her live shows.

“My gigs are more inclusive, if you like, and I absolutely love the idea of people singing along to the chorus at the top of their voices.

I love and encourage that,” Mary said. “A lot of my songs lend themselves to that so it feels like a bit of a party where everyone can join in. The tour has been going really well so far and I’m very happy with it, so I’m really looking forward to coming back to Killarney.”

Cathriona Rohan

Celebrating 15 years in Business IF ever you needed proof of the rewards that can be reaped from years of determination, perseverance and honest to God hard work, then you’ll definitely find inspiration from award-winning hair stylist Cathriona Rohan.

Celebrating an impressive 15 years in business this year, the Castlemaine native has built up a renowned enterprise which she is hugely proud of - opening her first salon in Castlegregory in 2003, followed by further salons in Tralee and most recently Dingle.

A self-confessed workaholic, Cathriona says that her willingness to put in long hours and take risks is what ultimately helped her carve out such a successful career in hairdressing world – a route she admits, however, she took some what accidentally.

Cathriona told Connect that as a teenager it was always her dream to become a chef – that was until a part-time hairdressing job after her Leaving Cert, while waiting for a place at culinary college, changed her life forever.

“I actually wanted to be a chef when I left school, and while I was waiting for a place at Cathal Brugha Street [DIT School of Culinary Arts] after my Leaving Cert I got a summer job with a hairdresser in Tralee,” Cathriona explained. “I loved it so much that I never went to college in the end. In fact, I didn’t even check to see if I got my place, I was so happy where I was.”

Following several years working at various hair salons in Tralee, Cathriona decided in 2002 to set up on her own business in her adopted Castlegregory, initially taking appointments in her own home. The following year, she decided to make take the giant step and open her own salon in the west Kerry village – and the rest, as they say is history!

“It was a big step for me at the time and I was mostly there on my own at the beginning, apart from one more girl I had there every summer for a few years,” Cathriona explained. “It was

hard to know what way it would go, but thankfully it was the right move.”

To help promote her business and broaden her customer base, Cathriona joined forces with the Killarney-based Norma O'Donoghue Model Agency, working on fashion shows across the county. She soon became recognised as a top creative talent for catwalk shows and magazine shoots and over the years, Cathriona’s styles appeared on TV, while she and her team were the chosen stylists for a number of high profile fashion shows including the Simply B fashion Show, Rose of Tralee Fashion Show, Miss Universe Kerry and Style Squad.

“This was an area I always wanted to delve into and when we began working with Norma (O’Donoghue) it really took off for me,” Cathriona explained. “It meant long hours and weekend work, but I loved the buzz and pressure of it all and it was great to see my name being recognised.”

As the years went on and Cathriona’s business began to expand, she and her staff began to become even more established, with the team taking part in a number of high profile hairdressing competitions across the word.

The highlight for Cathriona, however, came almost five years ago when she was chosen along with a handful of stylists from across the country to represent Team Ireland on an international scale.

“I went to Paris with Team Ireland and finished fourth, which was an amazing honour for me,” Cathriona said. “To be chosen on Team Ireland was amazing enough, but to finish fourth out of dozens of hair stylists from all over the world was a really special.”

premises a complete overhaul and redesign.

Initially taking just one unit at Mary Street, Cathriona quickly purchased the adjoining unit to expand event further and now enjoys a hugely successful business in the heart of the busy town.

“I am blessed with the incredible team I have with me, as well as my loyal customers - some of whom have been with me since the very beginning in Castlegrogory,” she said, “But as well as that, I wouldn’t have any of this if I wasn’t prepared to take the risks in the first place and I suppose that’s what I would say to anyone thinking about branching out. You won’t know what lies ahead until you try and if you don’t take that risk, you’ll never find out.”

The Importance OF WATER

There are several extremely important benefits that make water a most vital component for a healthy diet and lifestyle.

The body is made up of at least 60% water. Each day the body loses water through several means – urination, in the skin through sweating, bowel movements and through the lungs as water vapour in the air. This water must be replaced in order for the body to function properly.

Water is essential for life. It is the primary component of all bodily fluids – blood, lymph, digestive juices, urine, tears and sweat.

Water is involved in almost every bodily function – circulation, digestion, absorption and elimination of wastes and transportation of nutrients.

Water helps to energise muscles. When muscle cells do not have adequate fluids, this can result in muscle fatigue and they will not work so well. Drinking enough fluids is important when exercising. During exercise, it is recommend that people start drinking fluids early, and drink them at regular intervals to replace fluids lost by sweating.

Water helps skin to look good.

The skin contains lots of water, and functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. Dehydration can make skin look drier and wrinkled, which can be improved with proper hydration.

Water supports kidney function. Water helps to eliminate waste and toxins through the kidneys. Drinking water can lower the risk of kidney stones and infections.

Water helps maintain normal bowel function. Adequate hydration helps to move food along the gastrointestinal tract, assists fibre in working properly and prevents constipation.

Inadequate water intake causes the colon to pull water from stools to maintain hydration and the result is constipation.

On average it is recommended that we need just over 2 litres of water daily to stay hydrated. However there are many other factors which can determine an individual’s water requirements including exercise, climate, illness (fever, vomiting or diarrhea causes loss of additional fluids), and women who are pregnant or breast-feeding may need additional fluids to stay hydrated.

SYMPTOMS OF DEHYDRATION CAN INCLUDE • Dry, sticky mouth • Sleepiness or tiredness — children are likely to be less active than usual • Thirst • Decreased urine output — no wet diapers for three hours for

infants and eight hours or more without urination for older children and teens

• Few or no tears when crying • Dry skin • Headache • Constipation • Dizziness or lightheadedness

TIPS TO CONSUME MORE WATER: • Experiment with different flavours

of herbal teas (please ensure that any of the ingredients of herbal teas do not interfere with medical conditions or medications)

• Boil water and allow to cool until lukewarm before drinking.

Flavour with slice of lemon / lime / cucumber / strawberries / orange segment / mint leaves (whatever your personal taste) • Opt for water rich foods i.e. watermelon, tomatoes, peaches,

pineapple, strawberries and oranges, cucumbers, carrots, celery, squash and bell peppers

• Homemade soups aid hydration • Plain coconut water – good for hydration

Headaches in Childhood Headaches are a common problem in children. The effect of headaches on a child’s school performance, personality, interpersonal relationships depend on their cause, frequency and severity. Occasionally a headache may indicate a severe underlying disorder in the brain. Infants and toddlers respond to headaches in nonpredictable ways.

Toddlers cannot communicate the characteristics of headache: • May become irritable and cranky • Vomit • Hold their head • Put their hands over their ears • Rub their eyes • And may prefer a dark room because the light hurts their eyes, called Photophobia.

The commonest causes of headaches in children include migraine, tension headaches, visual problems which is overrated as a cause of headaches, sinusitis, teeth grinding or clenching during sleep called Bruxism which is associated with anxiety /tension.

Migraine is the commonest type of headache in childhood.

Type 1: Migraine without aura symptoms. Onset of headache called Aura such as pins and needles, various visual phenomena such as flashing lights and various colours. Migraine usually starts on one side of the head and is pounding or throbbing associated with nausea and vomiting. Other symptoms may include pallor, light hurting the eyes, light headedness, intolerance to noise which is caused Phonophobia, aversion to odours which is called Osmophobia, pins and needles of the hands and feet which is called Paraesthesia.

Family history is present in 90% of children with migraine particularly with an aura. Thus, must be cautious in making migraine diagnosis in the absence of a history in the family. Additional features of all migraines may include association with peri menstrual timing, precipitation by food, odours and stress. Manifestation suggestive of a more serious condition would include rapid onset, worst ever headache, progressive headache lasting for days, change in characteristics in the headache, headache made worse by coughing, sneezing or bending down.

Type 2: Migraine with aura, with foregoing symptoms including temporary visual or sensory disturbances that strike before other migraine symptoms. Young children may find it hard to describe visual aura such as blurred vision or decreased vision within the visual field, flashes of light called Photopsia and distortion of objects. Some children may have dizziness and light-headedness. Sensory symptoms include pins and needles 14 | Connect Kerry | April 2018

around the mouth, hands or feet. Distortion of body image called the “Alice in Wonderland Syndrome” may occur.

Sometimes they may develop temporary paralysis on one side of the body or sensory symptoms such as numbness down one or other side of the body.

Treatment: Migraine attacks may be prevented or ameliorated by avoiding known initiating stimuli most common precipitating factors are stress, fatigue, anxiety, may be under stress at home or at school. Certain foods can precipitate migraine such as chocolate, nuts, cocoa drinks, citrus food, cheese, Chinese food due to monosodium glutamate used in the food.

Treatment of acute attack: Panadol or Brufen for the headache. Anti-vomiting drugs such as Dramamine usually by suppository because they will not work orally if vomiting is associated with the attack. If these painkillers fail -Imigran. The nasal preformulation is the most satisfactory for children.

The decision to use preventative therapy depends on the severity or frequency of the headache and the impact of the migraine on the child’s daily activities.

Drugs: (1) Inderal starting with a low dose and then increase for maximum effect may take three to four weeks.

(2) Sibelium (3) Sanomigran Behavioural techniques can be effective in children over eight years such as relaxation therapies and biofeedback which requires the services of a specialist Psychologist trained in such technique.

Type 3: Tension headache, common in teenagers and often overlap with migraine. Tension headaches more commonly occur in school hours or anxiety promoting attacks or stressful situations. The character of tension headaches is aching or hurting not throbbing, most occur in the frontal area and are not associated with nausea or vomiting.

Treatment: Determine origin of stress / anxiety, Panadol is helpful, facial muscle tension may be relieved by a mandibular brace akin to a mouthguard footballers wear to be used at night for three months. Physio to the neck muscles also helpful.

Warning overuse painkiller headaches If painkillers are used for three out of seven days or more, painkillers themselves can cause headaches which can be a serious problem.

Celebrating the Hair and Beauty Industry in Kerry Now in its second year the Connect Kerry Hair and Beauty Awards took place at a glamorous Ceremony on Sunday March 11th at the fabulous Rose Hotel, Tralee. It was an amazing day with over 270 people from all over the county enjoying a fabulous event. It honour's all who work on a daily basis in salons and spas all over the county. These people deserve to be recognized and we are delighted to reward them for the work they do on a daily basis to make us all look good and feel great. It’s the first of its kind in Kerry and we are delighted it’s now an annual event in the calendar. It was a wonderful day for networking and connecting in the industry and lots of new friendships were made. We look forward to doing it all over again next year.

He has, along with a Co-Founder, set up a Company developing technologies for awareness and inclusion of Autism in the Retail, Entertainment, and Hospitality Sectors and in the Workplace in general.

About myself…

After graduation, I started a Company, called “myAccessHub”, along with a partner and I was lucky enough that i was accepted onto to the Enterprise Ireland New Frontiers Programme based in the Tom Crean Centre, Tralee. The aim of this programme is to identify Kerry start-up companies that they believe can be grown on a global scale. It was a major bonus to be accepted on this programme.

The Company promotes inclusion and respect in the workplace and in the Business World. “myAccesshub” allows all employees within a business to learn about neurodiversity and to become aware, develop empathy and learn about the barriers presented to people who are neurodiverse on a daily basis.

The Company was entered into an international start-up competition entitled the Bridge to MassChallenge which is an international startup competition, in partnership with the Cork County Council. This competition identifies and accelerates the top healthcare and life sciences start-ups in the Republic of Ireland, and connects those start-ups to the global market and MassChallenge's global network. “myAccessHub” was identified as one of the top 12 Entrepreneurs and as a result, on the 2nd of April, 2018, I will be heading off to Boston along with another eleven Irish Start-up companies to compete with the very best.

MassChallenge are one of the largest business accelerators in the world and the potential opportunity for “myAccessHub” through this forum is enormous.

After Leaving School After I left school, I decided to travel and work and this afforded me the opportunity and allowed me the time to identify my strengths and weaknesses. I could also explore which career path to take. After returning from New Zealand, I enrolled as a mature student and spent three years studying Computer Science. During my time studying in College; I developed a vital skillset that I now put to use every day - to build and grow my business. What is important to realise is that this skillset is not just related to the technology skills such as programming and web development that I studied, but generic vital skills like critical thinking, user centered design and project management.

I developed great confidence and an ability to present and pitch my project ideas to a group of people. Being able to stand up in a room and articulate your project takes a lot of practice, but is so vital in the business world.

Looking Ahead The future is looking bright for me and my Company “myAccessHub”, I am currently working with a number of Multinational Tech and Retail Companies around Ireland. The plan is to scale up the company from the Tralee headquarters.

Regionally, Tralee is a perfect location due to the number of highly skilled people graduating on a yearly basis from Colleges.

Over the next three years, the plan is to expand and to take on a number of employees in key areas such as Sales, Marketing, Business Development and Software Development.

Briefly Describe your Industry . . .

I work in the Software Industry sector. This is a hugely expanding sector in the Kerry region. Working with software, the developer usually specialises in writing the programmes and teams up with another expert from another areas and the result is the build of an amazing product. This is exactly what I did too, my business partner is an expert in Autism. With her expertise in autism and my expertise in Software Development, we combined our expertise to enable us to develop a product that allows a business to offer an “inclusive experience” to employees and customers who are potentially on the Autism Spectrum. We

“You get what you pay for” has never been more true than when comparing box hair colour to professional, hair colour services.

While it may seem like a good option for the budget-conscious DIY-er, box hair dye can destroy those healthy locks.

CONSIDER THESE FIVE DETAILS BEFORE PICKING UP THAT NEXT BOX DYE . . .

1. Ingredients - There’s a reason the price point for box hair dye is lower than its professional counterpart. Most manufacturers of box hair colour include the lowest amount of pigment possible in order to control costs. Salon hair colour, on the other hand, considers individual hair quality and necessary level of pigment to deliver superior results. Boxed hair colour manufacturers typically leave the post-colour reconditioning to you, making recommended treatments based on generalizations and leaving a lot of room for fading, breakage and even hair loss. Salon treatments, on the other hand, typically include additional conditioning agents.

2. Formulation - Developer, is responsible for the chemical processes that allow hair colour to be deposited into the hair shaft–the activator for the pigment in your hair colour. Professional hair colour companies offer a range of developers—10, 20, and 30 volume, typically—that are designed to protect different hair types while delivering the desired color results. Hair with higher porosity or existing damage, for example, is better served by a lower volume developer and a stylist in a salon will pick a developer based on your current hair colour and health. Box hair colour uses one level of developer across the board, making for unpredictable and often disappointing results.

3. Customization - The perfect hair style is personal and quality results require a lot of customization. A box off a shelf simply can’t deliver.

When it comes to creating a colour look that works for you, consider this: - Skin tone and eye colour: These are the first things you and your stylist should take into account when choosing your perfect shades.

- Hair type and porosity: These are major considerations when deciding what type of colour and level of developer to use.

- Existing colour and/or percentage of grey hair: colour treated and Grey hairs take colour differently than other types of hair.

4. Application - The “one-shade-fits-all” approach of box hair dye typically ends in a flat, one dimensional head of hair. Professional stylists usually don’t stick to just one shade when colouring a client’s hair, instead using tonal variations to add the dimension and body you’re looking to achieve in a new style. How to place colour so that it looks natural and healthy? Just a few of the questions and results your stylist is capable of answering and providing.

Not to mention the back of the head and making sure it’s fully covered— almost impossible to do on your own!

5. Cost - Corrective colour often costs more what a standard full foil service does. Why? ...... The work involved.

Multiple appointments for restorative conditioning treatments, an outgrowth of healthy hair, restyling, trimming damaged strands, preventative maintenance and touch-ups are all common in returning hair to optimal health. A month or more of hair re-growth can be common before a stylist is ready to attempt a full head recolour. In the meantime, you might be left with the less than flattering results of your box hair colour job while your stylist does their best to repair your hair.

To correct a previous color job, a stylist will first attempt to: 1. Strip out the unwanted colour 2. Treat the hair, using a restorative deep conditioning treatment 3. Colour in stages to preserve and improve hair health and integrity 4. Treat between every stage, to restore hair health.

A complete colour correction could take several 2-3 hour appointments over the span of a few months, it can really add up.

Whether cost, hair health or style is the reason behind your next big hair transformation, consider the benefits of salon quality service before you pick up that next Drug Store box colour. While you might be saving some cash up front, the unpredictability of store bought colour is something to consider. Is it worth the money now if you’re unhappy with the results?

Catherine’s Fashion Fix Which body shape are you?

Fashion trends change fast, and it’s not always easy to know how to adapt them for our unique body shapes. So instead of buying every fashion trend going, dressing for your particular shape, rather than working against it, will ensure you’re more comfortable and confident. Women come in all shapes and sizes, so how do you find clothes that are flattering for your specific body type and work for you? The key is to know your proportions, and use fashion to accentuate your best features--and hide everything else!

There are 5 body types that best define the female form. The hourglass, inverted triangle, rectangle, pear and apple. The first way to identify your body type is to stand in front of a mirror in leggings and a fitted top and analyze your silhouette from the front.

Check how your hip width compares to your shoulder width. Check whether you have a defined waistline. Another way to identify your body type is to use a measuring tape to measure your shoulders, bust, waist and hips.

Are you an Hourglass?

Your shoulders and hips are around the same size with a defined waist. You upper body is proportionate in length to your legs and you are the shape most women desire.

What to wear: When dressing for an hourglass your goal is to highlight your curves, not hide them, by emphasizing your waist. Pencil, flared and short skater skirts all look great on your curves and show off your great legs. Tops that end just below your hip line will make you look instantly taller and slimmer.

Wear necklines that draw attention to your décolletage and bust for example boat neck, V-neck, scooped or sweetheart necklines.

Choose form-fitting dresses that nip in at the waist — wrap dresses and fit-and-flare dresses will fit you like a dream. Your options are limitless when it comes to trousers as you can wear any type once you pair with the right top.

Are you an Inverted Triangle?

Your shoulders or bust are larger than your hips.

When dressing for an inverted triangle your goal is to add volume to your lower half.

What to wear: Create more width and overall balance on your lower half with A-line or full skirts and dresses. You have a wide choice of pants and jeans to choose from to include, boyfriend jeans, culottes, wide leg trousers and bootcut. Embellishments and pocket detailing on your trousers or skirts also work well. Use bold colours on your lower half to create more bulk. Wrap, v-necks and any top with nipping at the waist work well. Avoid shoulder pads, oversized collars on coats and jackets or anything that accentuates the shoulders.

Are you a Rectangle?

Your shoulders, bust and hips are the same size with no defined waist. So you are basically an hourglass without the defined waist. As a rectangle you essentially have two choices.

Either use structure to embrace your straight lines, or use fit to create curves to enhance your silhouette.

What to wear: This body type is quite easy to dress as a lot of clothes will usually suit you and fit well. If you are looking to create curves wear tops, blazers, jackets and coats that emphasize the waist. Be sure to wear a good bra with padding to add shape to your upper body. Choose tops with pockets, ruching, pleating and ruffles to add volume. Accessorize with belts to accentuate your waist. Halternecks and high necklines work well on rectangle shapes as they show off your great arms and shoulders.

Your frame was made for boyfriend jeans, slouchy trousers, wide legged or cropped pants. A line, fit and flare and shirt dresses with or without a belt also work depending on the shape you are looking to achieve.

Are you a Pear?

If you are a pear shape your hips are wider than your shoulders. When dressing for a pear shape all you have to do is strike a balance. Your goal is to elongate and balance your figure by accentuating your top half.

What to wear: Layering garments can balance a pear-shaped body by adding visual interest to the top half of the body. Choose tops in bold colours and prints. Wide necklines like boat-necks and scoop-necks visually widen your shoulders. Shirts, tops and dresses with embellished necklines naturally draw the eye upward toward the slimmest part of a pearshaped body. A-line dresses and tops emphasize the upper body while slimming the wider hips. Keep the hems of pants, skirts and dresses wide to visually balance a pear-shaped body. Ensure that all tops wall just below your hipbone as this will extend your torso.

Avoid tops or tunics that extend down to your thighs as these only highlight your widest area.

Are you an Apple?

Your body is top heavy with wide shoulders, full bust, large waist and upper back. Apple-shaped women tend to have thinner arms and legs and gain weight at their waistlines.

What to wear: When dressing for an apple your goal is to minimize your midsection by highlighting your best assets. If you have an apple-shaped body, then you must have a great bust, so don't be afraid to flaunt it as it will also take attention away from your middle. Wear v-neck and plunging necklines. Avoid elaborate necklaces or tops with ornate patterns near the neck. You already have a great bust, so it needs no adornments. A-line, empire and wrap tops and dresses draw attention to your bust and skim over your midsection. A great pair of legs often comes with the apple-shaped body. So, whether you're tall or on the shorter side, don't be afraid to show off your great legs. Avoid wearing leggings or skinny jeans as these will make your legs look smaller. Opt for straight, flared, wide legged or boot cut trousers to help balance out the volume of your upper body.

However, don't panic if you’re not one of these shapes as every body is different. These dressing guidelines are best used as a starting point to understand the basics. And, let’s be honest—most women are a combination of several! It’s all about mixing & matching until you find what’s best for you.

Replace those missing cheekbones!

Now it is possible to actually look as young as you feel with the new range of facial aesthetic treatments available at Mac Domhnaill dental with our aesthetic clinican Dr Susan Crean. Natural products are used such as belotero acid to soften fine lines and wrinkles that appear when we age. Hyaluronic acid stores deplete in our body as we get older. However, this can be replaced by administration of a natural filler to replace volume lost around the cheekbones and soften the lines that appear around the nasiolabial folds (sides of nose and mouth). A full consultation in our clinic, will comprise of an assessment of suitability for treatment with subsequent tailored treatment plans concentrating on the areas that would benefit most from treatment.

Belotero can be used as seen in figure 2.1 and 2.2 to soften nasiolabial folds through adding filler to the cheekbones and replacing the lost volume.

Botulinum toxin Type A (Bocouture) can also be administered if required to the upper half of the face where dynamic lines have appeared (lines developing through movement of the face eg frown lines, crows feet etc. Figure 3.1 and 3.2 shows the effects of administration of botulinum toxin to the procerus and corrugator muscles used during frowning.

Whilst non surgical treatments are not suitable for everyone, they can produce some very pleasing cosmetic results for the right candidate. All patients are invited to attend for a free consultation if considering non surgical therapy.

Happy easter to you all, and happy Autism Awareness month (April) to those of you in the Autism world like myself.

This month is filled with a variety of entertainment in Tralee and Killarney especially for the kids while off on their easter break at the beginning of the month. Make sure to check out the Facebook pages of your local pubs too for bands playing, I would highly recommend heading to ‘renovator’, ‘Zeds dead’ or ‘sweet F.A’ if you spot them! Also ‘Wyvern Lingo’ rescheduled their March 8th gig in Mike the pies for April 12th if you can get over to it, it will be a gig not to be missed. Some highlights this month are....

SIAMSA CHILDREN OF EDEN TMS April 11-14th Presented by the award-winning, Tralee Musical Society. This fastmoving, uplifting and creative show is a portrayal of two biblical stories - the story of creation following Adam and Eve as well as Noah and his family. I’m very excited to see this again, they staged it in 2004 and it was nothing short of an experience to be a member of the audience.

SCIENCE MAGIC With Donal Vaughan April 15th 3pm A fantastic mix of science magic and comedy for younger audiences ages 5+. Join triple-award winning comedian and scientist Donal Vaughan and prepare to enter the magical world of science! I’ll be bringing my little man along to this, it’s something so different to do with kids! I just hope he doesn’t get any mad ideas when he’s back home!

INEC KILLARNEY MARY BLACK IN CONCERT - Friday, April 13th 2018,€35 'Mary Black is delighted to be returning to the INEC on April 13th as part of her 2018 Irish Tour. MIKE DENVER IN CONCERT WITH MARGO - Saturday, April 14th 2018, €33.20. A night of country and Irish classics performed by two of the great Irish cabaret acts out there at the moment. The INEC and The Brehon hotel are providing some lovely overnight and dinner deals for this concert so why not have a look and make a weekend of it.

SONG OF THE MONTH - ‘Through your eyes’ by Tom Lucey This song is being released to coincide with the Autism awareness campaign on snapchat and Facebook ‘through their eyes’, Tom Lucey is from Killarney, he wrote the song and teamed up with Brendan O’Connor from ‘little Dylan studios’ to record and produce it so that ALL PROCEEDS,100% every last penny will go directly to the charity ‘my canine companion’ which provide service dogs specially trained to those on the Autism spectrum that would benefit from them, the dogs cost €10,000 to train and the charity receive no funding, Toms beautiful song is doing the rounds on Facebook at the moment with the promotional video for the campaign and will be available on iTunes and Spotify in April.

I hope those of you that get a break over Easter thoroughly enjoyed it and remember after our very snowy spring.... hopefully we will have a fabulous summer ahead, keep those voices warmed up.

The Joy of Movement Everybody knows that your feelings can affect how you move. We talk of people walking with a spring in their step when they’re happy, or describe people trudging along when they’re sad. When you’re anxious, you can become jittery and move in short, sharp bursts, or even become paralyzed with fear. Those suffering from depression become more and more sedentary, and can find it hard to get out of bed in the morning. What’s less obvious is that this is a two-way street, and movement can have an enormous impact on your feelings. In fact, studies have shown that regular exercise can improve mood disorders or other forms of emotional dysregulation. The holy trinity in improving our emotional health, in fact, are breathing, movement and diet.

With anxiety, regular exercise and correct breathing help to process the effect of your brain’s “fight or flight” system and lessen its impact. Depression also responds very well to regular exercise, particularly in the short-term. In the longer term, depressive symptoms can be alleviated by slower, more meditative movement that brings one’s attention to the body, its position in space and subtle changes within. Exercises like tai-chi or some form of yoga can do this. Indeed, regular yoga practice has been shown to help with post-traumatic stress symptoms. Biodynamic exercise is also very useful in accessing emotional issues and resources, and helping to resolve deepseated neurotic patterns. Unfortunately, when people are suffering from emotional dysregulation, it can be very difficult for them to motivate themselves to exercise. On the other hand, any form of movement at all – walking, swimming, dancing, cycling – will begin to have an effect very quickly, so if you can do even a little exercise, it will help you a lot.

Revenue Audit The mere mention of Revenue Audits is often enough to make most wake up in cold sweats in the middle of the night. Why did they pick me?

What did I do wrong? How much will I owe?

Who is Selected?

Although some Revenue Audits are still random, the majority are now based on a Risk Evaluation Analysis and Profiling (REAP) system. It allows Revenue to analyse data across individuals, companies, business and sectors, identifying inconsistencies. In addition, Revenue often targets specific sectors.

Assurance Check These are not Revenue Audits and happen very frequently to allow Revenue to try explaining inconsistencies without the need for a full audit.

Take these seriously as there is a reason Revenue has selected you. In absence of proper response it is likely to lead to a full audit.

Revenue Audit Essentially if you are fully compliant you have nothing to worry about but be careful. Although revenue audits are for specific periods they can be extended. Do a review of information prior to the audit and if necessary make a voluntary disclosure of any errors at the start of audit.

NB: Penalties and interest will be applied to any underpayment of tax. Penalties are much higher when errors are not disclosed.

Recommendation Filing tax returns on time consistently reduces Risk so stay compliant even when you cannot pay liabilities.
