WHAT’S INSIDE

Hi everyone. So calm has been restored in Kerry, the silver ware is safely tucked away in the shelves of the Kerry County Board for another year, every little boy and girl in the county has seen their idol deliver the promise of keeping Kerry champions in the GAA field, and the celebration goes on, we are so proud of our boys in green senior and minor, well done one and all. Speaking of sport, we decided to catch up with some ladies who play with Munster and Connaught and indeed some have played nationally with Ireland, yes it’s our Rugby ladies, they may play for different provinces but they all have one thing in common they are Kerry ladies, so we decided to find out what it’s like to be part of a predominantly male orientated game. We also did some wonderful photos with them so we get to see a totally different side to them. Fitness and getting in shape is also very important this issue and we have a look at the different options of getting back on track with our recommended fitness providers. We have all the usual tips and advice as we do each month with a selection of pictures from some of the many events happening around the county, including ladies day at Listowel which is always amazing in the style stakes, we also catch up with the Kerry Film Festival who are celebrating 15 years this year. It’s full of lots of interesting stories and features so we hope you enjoy it.

s ’ y r r e K t e e M Rugby Queens We were delighted to catch up with some young ladies from Kerry who started out playing rugby with their home teams but have gone on to play with Munster and Connaught and indeed some of them have had the achievement of playing with Ireland too. We are very proud of them and just wanted to share some of their thoughts with you about the game the training and what it’s like to be a lady in the game of rugby. Siobhan can you tell us were you always interested in Rugby from a young age or was it something that developed later in your teenage years? I was a late comer to rugby; it wasn’t until my late 20’s even before I started playing with Tralee RFC, and something I simply took up in order to just keep fit and to try something new. I was always big into sports growing up, so as a sport mad person it’s often nice to try out different sports from time to time also. How about you Riona? I played Gaelic football from the age of11/12. It wasn’t until I played tag rugby that I found out there was a ladies team in Tralee. A few girls on my tag team played rugby and sold it to me. I really enjoyed tag but the physicality of rugby was a bit daunting. I never imagined it would be one of my favourite parts of the game, that and the camaraderie and commitment within the team. You really have to give everything for each other on the

field. This is my 5th season playing with Tralee Ladies RFC and I am totally hooked. Christine Have you always been into sport too? I was always interested in sport growing up - horse-riding, football, hockey...I was at a salsa dancing class aged 15 when a friend of my sister’s suggested I give rugby a go. The next morning I was up at the pitch and was bitten by the bug! Siobhan tell us a bit about the day jobs are employers flexible to meet the needs of the team for extra training or matches etc. I work as a Special Needs Assistant Monday to Friday in Currow National School until 3 o’clock and continue on from there in the evenings to another job I have in an office until 6 o’clock. I am fortunate enough thou to have weekends off when all club and provincial matches are played but when it comes to the six nations competition I often need to get time off work during the competition for games or travelling, thankfully I work for some great people who truly appreciate sport and the sacrifices and commitment needed, so when it comes to needing a day or two off or having to leave work early they are more than accommodating, I am very lucky!!!

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry towards women playing rugby is definitely changing which is the important thing right now. It’s something that has to be constantly worked at thou. It’s also important that the woman’s game is not just portrayed as a game for “big strong women” and the beauty of rugby is that there is a place on the team for all kinds of players of all shapes, sizes and skill levels. It’s a sport like any other that requires skill, talent and hard work combined no matter what your gender.

thick of it all you don’t really take much notice of it, it becomes part of your norm. Christine give us an idea of the schedule When I was with the 7s squad a typical week involved 2 morning gym sessions before work, 2 evening conditioning sessions, 1 skills session and weekend camps involving 5-6 training sessions.

Christine what are your thoughts on the game? Is ladies rugby becoming more acceptable in recent times? I think so. Before when you’d say you play rugby, people would wonder if it was tag rugby or touch rugby - people could hardly get over that the rules were exactly the same as the men’s game - full contact, fully contested scrums and the like! Whereas these days’ people are able to watch women’s rugby on TV and have been able to see the girls in action in the World Cup & 6 Nations - the awareness and support is growing! Riona you play Gaelic too do you find it hard going with both? I play football with Na Gaeil ladies as well as playing rugby. During the summer once football, Munster and club rugby training started it was seven days a week. It’s important to look after yourself and not to over train. It’s very easy to burn yourself out if you don’t take a common sense approach to it and allow for a recovery day. This is important mentally as much as physically.

What did it feel like to win a six nations medal? Winning a six nations medal is something that I still can’t really believe I have done myself, at the time it was just so surreal. For me it was like living someone else’s life or like watching a movie or something strange like that. It was and still is hard to fully appreciate what we achieved in the height of all the craziness and excitement. The support I received when I came back home was unbelievable and this support made my achievements even more special. I have great memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Siobhan do you think rugby is changing, it was always known as the strong man’s sport, is this turning a corner now and do people take it seriously when ye say we are the ladies rugby team? I believe that rugby will probably always be known as a strong man’s sport. Change takes time as we all know but opinions

Siobhan you are currently Munster Women’s player of the year for 2014 has this had an impact on your life? It’s not the awards that we win that have the impact on our lives, it’s the journeys we have to take and the people we take them with that has the impact. It’s extremely humbling when you get selected for an award when deep down the reality of it is that without the people such as your team mate’s beside you it never would have been possible. Also for me I have to specially mention my Tralee coach Paul “Yak” McMahon who dedicated and sacrificed so much of his own time away from his family training me to become the player I have become, along with my training partner Riona Kennedy. I get the glory of the awards when the reality of it is that without these people to mention but a few it would not have been possible. Is the training schedule hectic? Training schedules vary depending of the time of year and the various competitions. It’s all a matter of habit and when you’re stuck in the

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry What do ye do to wind down? Is there time out from training to chill and have fun? Siobhan - When I first started out with the Irish ladies I always remember having a conversation with one of the established girls and the topic of having time to have fun came up as I was still getting into the swing of all the training, travelling etc. on top of work I wondered where you’d find time for anything else but she assured me “there is always time to have fun”, and she was dead right. No matter how crazy the schedule got you do always manage to have a laugh. Very often the best crack is at training, you’re with your friends and the banter and tricks are never in short supply. Plus rugby is a season sport so the schedule allows lots of time for socialising during the off season also. Christine - It’s very important to be able to switch off and relax. I try to meet up with friends and family regularly - I head home to Kerry when I can! Riona they tell me you are a bit of a live wire and don’t do winding down is this true? Me and winding down don’t really go together. I always have to be on the go. I am very fortunate to have strong friendships within the teams I play with so there is never a lack of activities outside of training. It is important to spend time with friends outside of sport when you can as once the season starts most weekends are taken up with games. I have nieces and a nephew who keep me busy and there is nothing better than spending time with them, I look forward to introducing them to rugby and football. It will be interesting to see if they will develop the same love of sport that I have.

Spread the Good News ! Money can’t happiness.

buy

you

Well at least it can’t buy you long lasting happiness. A new dress or a new pair of shoes still manage to cheer me up every once and a while. Everyone in the world strives to be happy. That is like the main goal that lives within us, because there is no feeling like happiness. One thing that I do wonder about is if happiness is a main goal of ours then why do some of us cling to the negatives? Whether we like it or not, it is true. Whenever any of us walks down the street we will hear who has failed, who is ill or who is in trouble. Those are usually the things that fill our minds and those are usually the things that we discuss when you go that one step beyond small talk. We don’t focus on the positive, we focus on the negative. Now correct me if I am wrong but I don’t think that by listening in on the hear-say or repeating gossip, we will achieve happiness. Don’t you think this negativity is ironic considering the number one song this Summer was titled “Happy”… ? Anyway, being the loving, caring and considerate person that I am, I want to do something to help fix this. When I walk down the street and I see someone

All smiles and happiness at Listowel Races with (from left) Jade Diggins, me and top model Pippa O’Connor Ormond

that I know, I want positive conversation and even if that means a few too many conversations about the weather… At least it will be positive.

To start us off, let us focus on the people around us. The next time that someone tells you that they have won the lottery or they just met their hero, please be happy for them. Don’t be the person to fake a smile, and then turn around and complain about them to the next person you see.

Spread the good, not the bad. Let me say it again . . .

Spread the good, not the bad.

Next time you see someone you know, or even a person you have never seen in your life, and they look stunning. Don’t just walk on by and pretend you didn’t notice that they made the extra effort, tell them that they look great. That comment could make their day, which will make them happy and make them more likely to be positive towards someone else. It’s all a circle. So as enjoyable as ‘tittle tattle’ or gossip can be, try to step away from it. Smile, enjoy life, buy yourself a new dress. Well maybe you don’t need the new dress, but I think you get where I am coming from… Until next time, Zoë x

LIVING BEYOND BREAST CANCER

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Approximately 2000 Irish women are affected by breast cancer each year; men can also develop breast cancer but less commonly. Treatments for breast cancer are improving all the time and can include combinations of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy. As treatments improve so do survival rates. Therefore, life after treatment for breast cancer should be one of quality. be avoided, immature eggs are harvested and allowed to mature outside the body before being fertilised or frozen. Harvesting of ovarian tissue to freeze is still very experimental and may not be the best option. There are also some drugs which can incorporate into chemotherapy regimens to “protect” the ovaries through treatments

Infertility Awareness Week runs from Oct 28-Nov 3 Facts

Fertility and Childbearing after Breast Cancer

While the majority of women who get breast cancer are older, women who have not completed their families can be affected. NICE (National Institute for Clinical Excellence) UK guidelines highlight the importance of younger women being offered Fertility Preservation treatments. While such an option may be the furthest thought from a woman’s mind at the time of treatment it is important that the chance to have a baby in the future is not overlooked. As fertility treatments are continually improving this increases options for women with cancer. Drugs that will not encourage the growth of breast tumours are now readily available to allow IVF between surgery and before chemotherapy starts. Egg freezing techniques are now much improved and this is now an option for women who do not have a partner. Some women may opt to undertake IVF treatment with donor sperm and freeze embryos for the future. Where there are limitations on the types of drugs used for IVF for a particular case a treatment known as In Vitro Maturation (IVM) can be performed. With this treatment hormone treatments can

Fertility declines with age, most especially after age 35 • 40% of cases of infertility are unexplained • Increasingly the importance of a healthy lifestyle including incorporating low GI foods into one’s diet

General Health after Breast Cancer Treatment

In cases where treatment includes chemotherapy a woman may enter the menopause immediately and very suddenly. Symptoms of menopause include hot flushes, sweats, sleeplessness, memory issues and vaginal dryness. Osteoporosis i.e. bone thinning is a silent problem that women will not be aware of. Many women suffer with their menopause symptoms on the presumption that they cannot take HRT and unaware that other options exist. There are many non-HRT options available; many lifestyle and dietary changes which may help and should be explored. Bone health can be helped by taking Vitamin D, eating healthily to increase calcium intake, beginning weight bearing exercise and strength training.

DO’S

DON’TS

Do put in 100% effort into your workout… if you only put 50% effort in you’ll only get 50% of the results. Do re-rack your weights…if you can lift them up you can out them back. Do wipe the equipment after you have used it. Do ask a trained professional for help or advice. It’s there job.

Don’t talk on your phone. You’re here to workout. Don’t stare. It’s rude. Don’t neglect training your legs!!! Don’t hog all the equipment. Other people are there to train too. Don’t be late for personal training sessions or group fitness classes.

Do share the equipment and let other people work in with you.

Don’t make very loud noises.

Do eat healthy and make sure you’re not starving yourself.

Don’t get to close. Give each other plenty of space.

Do adhere to the fitness centre rules.

Don’t come to the gym dressed for a night out. Wear comfy and sporty clothes.

Do your part and keep the gym and locker rooms clear. Do warm-up and stretch before and after any activity.

Don’t go to the gym if you’re sick. You’ll spread the germs and make everybody sick.

Do bring a bottle for water.

Don’t forget to shower and wash your hands.

weardrobe 3/4 Market Lane, Tralee 066 7180522 82 New Street, Killarney 064 6639933

So we are back again with Sandra to see what's happening in the wonderful world of Weardrobe for this time of year.. September is over and the kids are all back to school and college by now. You have spent a small fortune on books, uniforms and accommodation but now it’s finally time to think about you! Have a look through your winter wardrobe and eliminate anything that you are never going to wear again. Think about your lifestyle - home, work, hobbies…how well does your wardrobe match your lifestyle? ie..Do you have a wardrobe full of dressy clothes yet hardly ever go out? By doing this and really thinking about it you will see what you need to buy – and you should end up with a wardrobe that you thoroughly enjoy using. We spend about eight months of the year in our Autumn clothing so be sure to think ‘outfits’ rather than individual items. Accessorise your outfits too – a scarf can transform a look. Don’t forget putting an outfit on deposit is a great option and most boutiques accept deposits. That way you can pay at your ease, all the sizes are there for you and very importantly you build up a great relationship with the shop. They will get to know what you like and suggest other outfits to you. Sometimes when you are not looking for it you can stumble across an item that ticks all the boxes. It’s just perfect -the right colour, the right fit, it’s just you… but you don’t have a function! – BUY IT!! – You will not regret it! Remember that style is all about learning how to look your best every day, making the most of your natural attributes and balancing you with your clothes - Style never goes out of Fashion! Happy shopping!

Medi Spa Laser Clinic

Medical Micro Needling

The Sanctuary Medi Spa and Laser Clinic has recently up dated its treatment menu with the addition of Medical Micro Needling so we wanted to find out a little more about the treatment, what is involved and most importantly, what the treatment will do for us. Firstly, the DERMICA PEN is the most professional high speed micro-needle system for semi medical use and that is why the team at the Sanctuary choose this type of needling system. It enables a greater stimulation of collagen and elastin production, and increases the capacity of introduction of the vitamin C or hyaluronic acid for hydrating and plumbing during the treatment. The results are a faster and a more visible rejuvenating effect is achieved. The treatment takes one hour and the downtime is 24 to 48 hours and the clients must wear a sunscreen after having the treatment. The treatment is not painful; however the client depending on skin sensitivity will feel the procedure as it is taking place. The benefits of having the treatments are immense and these include the treatment of lines and wrinkles, slows down the ageing process by stimulating the collagen and elastin production, skin tightening, lifting and firming, improves skin texture and acne scaring, reduce pores size, improves skin hydration, boost skin radiance and overall rejuvenates the skin. A client is recommended to have 3 treatments for optimum results with a two week interval between these treatments. This treatments is fast becoming a sought after treatment because of the results you get. It is most widely used on the face but can also be used on the body for the treatment of scaring and stretch marks.

For more information or to book your free consultation contact the team at the Sanctuary Spa on 066 7185776

HI AGAIN EVERYONE, THIS MONTH WE ARE GOING TO BE DISCUSSING WARDROBE WEEDING. TO WEED YOUR WARDROBE YOU WON’T NEED A TROWEL BUT A QUIET HOUSE AND SOME HOURS TO SPARE. DON’T BE OVERWHELMED, IT CAN BE A BIG TASK BUT IT WILL PAY DIVIDENDS IN THE END. IT CAN HELP TO DIVIDE YOUR CLOTHES INTO 4 PILES AS FOLLOWS:

1. KEEP

The clothes you decide to keep should be things you wear often, are in good repair and fit perfectly. Keep all designer or occasional wear, as these are often investment classical pieces that will never go out of style e.g. a good leather jacket.

2. THROW OUT

Any clothes that are worn discoloured and beyond repair must find their way to the local charity recycle facilty. Some items can be recycled at home, make your own cotton dusters from old t-shirts.

3. GIVE AWAY

Be realistic when you are wardrobe weeding, anything you haven’t worn for 18months -2 years should be considered. There is a reason you haven’t worn these items be it they no longer fit or were an impulsive trend purchase. Donate them to a local charity shop.

4. RESTYLE/REPAIR

Styles and fits have changed dramatically over the years, and getting to know a good seamstress/tailor can be a great asset to anyone’s wardrobe. A simple hemline change can bring that dress bang up to date or tailoring that favourite old jacket can give it a new lease of life. For those of you lucky enough to be able to sew, get the needle and thread out!

Before we finish weeding do not forget your underwear, shoes and accessories should all come under close scrutiny. Once you have cleared out the wardrobe, you can then see what you need to purchase. Build a capsule wardrobe around your existing favourite pieces for that ultimate sleek style. If the idea of attacking your wardrobe is too much you can always hire a personal stylist to help you out. Their advice can make the job less daunting and more enjoyable. Whatever way you achieve it, wardrobe weeding will have you more organised and fashion ready for any occasion. Till next time, happy shopping, BEST REGARDS

Missing a tooth? Marcas Mac Domhnaill Fáilte romhaibh a chairde. The majority of people have at least one tooth missing and are often concerned about it. The tooth may be absent naturally. More often however, it has been removed due to decay, gum disease or for orthodontic purposes. When people have a number of teeth absent, it can create cosmetic problems as well as functional problems with chewing and speaking. Unfilled gaps can allow other teeth to drift apart, causing food traps and associated decay and gum disease. This leads to the need to fill in the spaces with artificial teeth. The three main options of filling a space, to replace missing teeth are: 1 Removable dentures. 2 Bridges. 3 Dental implants. It is worth noting that no two cases will be the same and that a combination of the above options may be necessary to get an acceptable result. The most important factor in choosing your most appropriate option is to have an assessment of your oral and dental health. After all, there is no point in making a bridge if the gum health is poor and unable to give long term support to the associated teeth. Dentures Dentures, or false teeth as they are often called, were the traditional way of replacing natural teeth in Ireland. Ní mór na daoine atá mantach, sa lá atá inniu ann. It is becoming less common now to provide full upper and lower dentures. This is because people are tending to keep their natural teeth for much longer than before. Partial dentures have become popular however, to replace natural teeth, when the patient still has some of their own teeth. The most common ones are made from a cobalt-chrome metal frame, which clips onto the natural teeth. It is very sturdy and hard wearing and has surpassed the traditional acrylic partial denture. Bridges Bridges are usually porcelain or metal teeth covered with porcelain, which fill a space and are attached to the natural teeth adjacent to the space. There are different types of bridges, but all need good adjacent teeth to support them. This of course means good supporting gums also, which are free of gum disease. Dental Implants Dental implants are becoming quite popular in recent years. They are still the most expensive way of filling a space but have little impact on the adjacent teeth or gums. Dental implants are made from metal and are usually inserted into the jawbone, where the natural teeth once stood. A false tooth can be attached to the top of the dental implant. Some may be attached immediately while some may have to wait for the bone and gum to heal. As mentioned, the dental assessment with radiographs , should give the clues as to the best way of filling gaps in the dentition. Your dentist will discuss your options with you, to achieve the best result. Always remember that maintenance is necessary to keep everything healthy after treatment. Even patients with full dentures need an annual examination to check for denture wear and mouth cancer. Beir Bua agus Beannacht. FISH AND CHIPS

WITH MARK DOE

BEER BATTERED COD WITH TARTAR SAUCE Fresh battered fish takes some beating One of my favourite food memories as a child was eating from a fish and chip shop called Jacks in my Grandparents home town. The fish and chips were cooked in beef dripping, and the fish was brought into the harbour, only 5 miles away on a daily basis. Jack always used to give us a bag of scraps (crispy bits of batter) as we were waiting for our fish to cook.Jack’s fish and chip shop was up for sale a few years ago, and I would have loved to have purchased it and carried on the legacy!

, BATTERED FISH SH FOR YOUR FI E IT H . W KE Y A K H A YOU FL DOCK OR POLLOCK, HAD T TO ENSURE SUCH AS COD, N A CLEAN D HO IS IL O R U YO ENSURE CRISP BATTER.

INGREDIENTS For the cod and batter

4 portions of cod fillet, bones and skin removed 100g self raising flour 125ml cold beer or water Pinch of salt Sunflower oil for deep frying

1 2 3 For the Tartar sauce 4 100ml mayonnaise 1 tablespoon. onion finely chopped 1 tablespoon. Capers, finely chopped ½ teaspoon of English mustard 2 tablespoons of gherkins finely chopped 1 tablespoon parsley, chopped Juice of ½ a lemon

Mix all of the above and keep in the fridge.

To make the batter, whisk the flour and beer (or water) until you have a smooth, thick batter. Leave in the fridge until you are ready to fry the fish. Heat the sunflower oil to 180-190c in a deep fat fryer or wok. Toss the fish through a little self raising flour and then pass through the batter.

5

Carefully place in to the hot oil and cook for 6-8 minutes until the fish is crispy and cooked through.

6

Remove the fish from the oil and drain on kitchen paper. Nothing beats freshly cooked battered cod. Serve with chips and mushy peas Serves 4

Connect DIARY

Just a taste of what’s happening around the county of Kerry for September. Friday 26th of September

Girls rev up for Chartiy

A group of Kerry women bikers have become calendar girls to raise money for a voluntary group working to prevent suicide. The calendar “Girls rev up for Chartiy” features women from Tralee, Listowel, Killarney and Gneeveguilla and the lauch night will be held in the Porterhouse Bar and Restaurant in Killareny on Friday 26th of September at 7.30pm. Shot in scenic locations around Killarney and Tralee the calendar will be sold in aid of the Kerry charity, Be Aware Prevent Suicide, which organises mental wellness exhibitions in Tralee and Killarney to foster mental health and help prevent suicide. Biker Deirdre Stack originally from Asdee and now living in Tralee is one of the promotors of the charity calendar. The other women bikers taking part are Eilish Coffey, Brid Coffey, Dervil Fleming all from Killarney, Kathryn Browne from Listowel and Deirdre Staak from Gneeveguilla. “I met a friend at the Bike Fest in Killarney last June and told her about an idea I had about producing a calendar for charity with motorbikes and women as the theme ”, Deirdre said. “I was really thrilled to see her enthuasism and the idea took off from there”. “We gathered six women in total who were fantastic in supporting the idea , and we had great fun working on the calendar” she said. Deirdre said they had got “great sponsorship” from business whose logos would appear on the calendar. “We decided on the charity Be Aware Prevent Suicide as we all know that suicide has become very prevelant in the last number of years”. “By selling this calendar, we can raise some money which will help a very worthy casue to hopefully go on to help save a loved one”, she said. Be Aware Prevent Suicide, Chairwoman Deirdre Fee of Killarney, said they appreciate the support very much because the charity relies totally on fundraising. Be Aware Prevent Suicide is a voluntary group, totally reliant on the donations of the public and does not have any paid employees so all monies donated or raised go directly to help those who need it.

CONNECT BOOK CLUB Introducing you to some more exciting titles this month from our Book Club Editor Kathy Cronin. If you have a particular book you would like to recommend to our readers email us info@connectpublications.ie

“Doctor Sleep” by Stephen King

“Doctor Sleep” by Stephen King is a fantastic sequel to his legendary novel, “The Shining.” For those of you who are worried that no sequel could ever be as great as its predecessor, don’t worry. You will not be disappointed by this amazing book. Dan Torrance is now an adult; a troubled alcoholic working in a variety of hospices, using his “shine” to help people pass on when their time comes. But when Abra Stone, a young girl with the brightest shine yet, contacts him, he must help her to fight the deceptively innocent-seeming True Knot. A brilliant read for all fans of King’s writing.

“Lone Wolf” by Jodi Picoult

“Lone Wolf” by Jodi Picoult is another gripping story by the queen of moral dilemmas. Some may find the novel too similar to her earlier work, “My Sister’s Keeper,” but I found this book to be different enough to keep my interest. The intriguing secrets shrouding the car accident that left Luke Warren in a coma, and injured his daughter Cara, unwrap slowly but artfully, drawing the reader in more and more with each chapter. I would recommend this wonderful book to all fans of Picoult’s writing. It is a highly enjoyable read.

“No One Here Gets Out Alive” by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman “No One Here Gets Out Alive” by Jerry Hopkins and Danny Sugerman is, in my opinion, one of the greatest biographies of all time. Detailing the background and chaotic career of Jim Morrison, it is a must-read for all fans of The Doors. Prepare to get lost in the morbidly fascinating world of darkness, philosophy and pure chaos. While, of course, I would recommend it for fans of The Doors, it is such a well-written and captivating book that even non-fans could enjoy it.

“The Little Friend” by Donna Tartt

“The Little Friend” by Donna Tartt is a truly spectacular book. If you are looking for an intricately detailed story featuring richly-portrayed and colourful characters that seem to step off of the page, look no further. This is the book for you. The protagonist, Harriet Cleve Dufresnes is scarily easy to imagine. “The Little Friend” reads like a broken fairy tale, with darkness seeping through the cracks in a sparkly mirror of childhood innocence.

KIRBY’S BROGUE INN A LANDMARK IN TRALEE Well it’s back and open for business Kirby’s Brogue Inn has been a tradition at the bottom of Rock Street for many years now, it has played host to many celebrities, gatherings and events and has been the centre hub for all that’s happening in Tralee and indeed Kerry. We catch up with owners Fiona and Kevin and they tell us what it means to have it opened again. Fiona you are back at the bottom of the rock as it has been well known for many years, how does it feel? To turn the key and open that door again meant the world to me. It just means everything - for mom, for dad and for everything they did. It would have been unthinkable to see someone else’s name over the door. Since we’ve taken on the business we have been overwhelmed by the goodwill of people from town and from further afield. It’s been a rollercoaster 18 months but now we’re on the crest of a wave with great staff and loyal new and old customers. We know that there are challenges ahead but that’s to be expected in any new business. Nonetheless, these are exciting times for us all. The Brogue is an institution in the town and indeed the county for many years

was it always your goal to get the doors open as quick as possible? Naturally, we wanted to get the Brogue reopened as soon as possible after the sudden closure in April 2013. It was equally important to keep it someway in the Kirby family. There were many obstacles along the way but once we closed the deal, there were lots of reasons why we needed to get the doors open quickly. We have only one chance at this but if the food it right and the service is right, then we will succeed. Kevin your Fiona’s husband and business partner so obviously ye work together and are partners in life, what’s the secret that all couples working and living together want to know? How do ye spend all day and night together and still stay smiling all day? We have a mutual respect for each other’s opinion. No matter how wrong she may be, Fiona is always right (lol)! Seriously though, we have a common goal, to succeed and while we might not agree about everything, we do know that we need to listen to each other, to our team and our customers. It’s easy to smile when you enjoy what you are doing. Of course we all miss Dad the great legend that was Bill Kirby but your mum is very much behind you in this venture supporting you, is this a great source of strength for you this must mean a lot? The fears that are associated with making such a big investment have been eased by the words of encouragement from our family, friends and the people of Tralee and

surrounding areas. My mother has always supported all of her children in everything that we have done over the years. Naturally, there have been ups and downs but she’s been a behind us all the way. The Brogue still offers all the services as before parties, dinner, lunch coffee, and any different services you have to offer that you would like to tell our readers about? It’s a focal building and is the first thing you see when you come onto Rock Street and it just means a lot to a lot of people. We’re placing a strong emphasis on offering quality food all day everyday - serving breakfast, confectionery, carvery lunch and dinner in the bar, food court and restaurant. We’ve invested heavily in redeveloping the new Cobblers’ Restaurant, complete with lounge and rooftop smoking area. This will help us to establish a reputation for being the venue of choice for Christenings, anniversaries and birthdays as well as corporate functions. We’re open daily from 9am until 11.30pm with late opening at weekends. Tralee needs a live music venue to showcase established and up-and-coming bands/ musicians. We are delighted to be that venue every weekend. We’re on the Street of Champions and who knows, by the time October comes, a few of the Rockies on the Kerry team may have further enhanced that reputation. So as mum and dad of a family of kiddies how do you juggle home and work and is there time out Our children are the most important people in our lives. Everything we do, we do it for them. They have been so good and patient with us while we’ve been reopening the Brogue. They’ll all be rewarded soon enough with a big holiday. It wouldn’t be possible to juggle work with family time without the support of our own wider network of family and friends, for which we are all truly grateful.
