his month we catch up with the ever glamourous Lorraine Keane, Lorraine we all remember from her radio days with her traffic reports, but she has many things achieved and completed since those days, she was voted “most influential person in fashion & beauty for 2015” at CFW for her Keane On Style event. She is very proud of that, she is also putting the plans in place for the new Keane on Style roadshow which will bring her team of hair, make up, skincare, anti-ageing and body shape experts, fashion designers and lifestyle gurus on a nationwide tour of Ireland in Autumn/Winter. She is delighted to announce her new event sponsors for this are Renault Ireland .she works with a number of charities and currently works with ‘make a wish Ireland’, Trocaire, world vision Ireland, the Down syndrome centre, Laura Lynn children’s hospice and the Dublin rape crisis centre. And on top of all that is a busy mum to two beautiful girls. Lorraine tells us a little bit about yourself where did your media life all begin for you? In senior college ballyfermot. My friend Ali was reading the prospectus for herself and found this course that she thought was ‘made for me’. After one year I qualified I broadcasting & journalism and was on my way to DCU to do a 4 year degree course in media communications when I my course coordinator at SCB Brenda Harnett sent me for an interview and audition with AA Road watch. 2 weeks later I was broadcasting live to the nation on Morning Ireland on Radio 1 and the rest is history. I never DID get to be a college bum that summer or any other

LORRAINE LOVES LISTOWEL summer after that but I’ve always loved working so no regrets. AA Road watch was an amazing start for me. I adored my time there. We all remember you as the AA Road watch lady on the radio does this still follow you around a bit? Yes gladly. I’ve such fond memories of my time there. People ask me to say my sign off regularly for fun. I’ll forever have a double barrel name Lorraine Keane AA Road watch You then moved to TV was this a big change from radio? For me they are the same as I’m the same although I find TV easier in some ways as on radio you only have your voice, your words. On TV an expression can tell a thousand words. You always look amazing have you any tips for our readers on getting the look right? Knowing what suits your shape is so important and feeling comfortable. If you feel confident and look happy you’ll look better. Recently you have done a serious of events ‘Keane on Style’ would you like to tell us about them? They are great fun nights out for women with yummy food and wine, a great fashion show with some of my favourite Irish designers and independent boutiques, on stage hair & make up demonstrations and expert talks, presentations and advice from the best people working in skincare, anti-ageing, body shape, nutrition and health in the business here. These are people that I have been lucky to work with over the course of my career. I love gathering these wonderful professionals under
one roof and ‘staring’ them with other women. You will go away having had a great night out and having leaner bed a thing or two too. With the ‘all important’ fabulous goody bag! You’re a mum too so I guess like the rest of us you juggle work and home life to suit do you find this difficult with the demands on your time? Some days I get it right, some days I get it wrong but I’ve learned not to beat myself up about it. The juggle is a struggle but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I adore my work and my favourite thing to be and do is a mum so I’ll be ‘winging it’ for the rest of my life on both counts. My girls know they are number 1 and I will always but their needs first but they also appreciate that I want to work and having a career makes me happy so we all try to be understanding and facilitate each other when we need to. You’re on your way to Listowel very soon to judge best dressed for their annual Bank Holiday Weekend Race Meeting, Do you like judging these events? I love it. I’m a people watcher and this gives me the perfect excuse to look people up & down (laughs). I also love the races so it’s a great excuse to take the time out to enjoy the day. What do you look out for on the day? Can you give our readers some tips on dressing for the races? It’s generally a pretty glamorous affair but I believe it’s important to dress a little practically too when it comes to the elements. It’s important you enjoy your day. In saying that I do like to see where someone has put a lot of thought into an outfit and made a real effort to accessorise from head to toe. Check the forecast in advance and be comfortable. Finally what does Lorraine do to chill and unwind if there is a spare minute at the weekend? Hanging out with Peter and the girls and my two furry babies. We love going for walks and outdoor adventures. Being

The lifestyle magazine for Kerry with my family is my happiest time. And a little retail therapy or a nice bottle of wine is also nice. So there we have Lorraine and if you would like to catch up with her go along to the Listowel June Bank Holiday weekend race meeting , Listowel is a great town and the spirit of traders working together in a small town is very alive and well here. Even though the September meeting is the highlight of the racing calendar the people of Listowel look forward to this weekend in June and it’s a great event for the town,
,dress to impress keeping in mind it is the start of the summer meetings ,so a burst of colour would be nice and of course our Irish weather a umbrella wouldn’t go astray. Is it a good day out for the men in our lives? Of course it is, it’s a lovely days racing and also a great family day out so bring all the family and have fun and let’s hope for a little sunshine too. And as Eilish says it’s a fun day out for all the family so make sure you don’t miss it, we had a little trip around the shops, local boutiques Coco and Glamourous
Shanahan who has a good news story of her own, having worked from home for some time she is now branching out on to Church Street where her new base opens at Tan–n-Go this month, Sandra is delighted with the move and looks forward to welcoming you for all your hair requirements. They specialise in bridal and occasion hair styles as well as the wonderful treatments they offer it’s definitely worth a visit. She styled Shauna in this issue and we think she is amazing. The look was completed by the very talented Sharon Heffernan of Harmony Beauty rooms Listowel, Sharon
Glamourous Boutique is always introducing new products and treatments to leave you feeling and looking beautiful and she certainly did that with Shauna, so you too will look amazing after a trip to Sharon.
but we met up with one lady who does incredible work to ensure the highlight that is Lady’s day on the Sunday meeting is a success. Eilish you are the lady behind the successful Ladies Day for the June bank Holiday meeting in Listowel, how did you get this role? I nominated myself really to be honest, Ladies Day needed to make a comeback for the June Bank Holiday week end. I approached the Race Company and they gave me great support so here we are and it’s getting stronger each year.
and award winning local Milliner Aoife Hannon agreed to feature some fashion looks for us for your day at the races. While doing our fashion shoot this issue we met with local hair stylist Sandra
That’s a sample of how to get yourself organised for the day, but don’t forget to make your way back into the town where all the wonderful eateries and pubs have a great line up planned to ensure you will enjoy your trip to Listowel.

Sandra's Tan-n-Go
It must be extremely hard work getting it all together do you enjoy it? Yes it is a lot of hard work, but it’s worth it when it all comes together on the day it’s wonderful. When I see all the stylish Ladies arriving to enjoy their day it’s a job well done. Are the businesses of the town supportive of it? Yes, all the businesses and Publicans give me great support and sponsorship for this event, it just would not be possible without each and every one of them so a massive thanks to them all. What advice would you give ladies planning the trip to Listowel Come early the judges will be on course at 1.30

THE UNCOUNTABLE LAUGHTER OF THE SEA
W
e recently attended the premiere of this powerful moving film which is written and directed by Ballyheigue Native Patrick O Neill, We sat down with Patrick to get a feel for where the movie came from. Hi Patrick tell us a little about you? On leaving Casueway School I went to The Priesthood, to Kiltegan in County Wicklow. Here I was inspired to begin to think and feel in a new way. My consciousness was opened to spirituality and on leaving I entered upon a jounrey of study and experince in Mystical thought. Poetry became a focal point as well as three years learning from The Rosicrucians. I went to England and studied Alternative Economics at Schumacher College where ecology and sustainability are the core values. After this and leaving for London where I set up a number of bands and moved with The Art World and Fashion World of that time. I was part of a collective entitled ‘United Aliens’ with Roberto Henrichsen the then designer of Missoni, and Eric Wright designer of Fendi, Jodie Kidd was our house model and Jemma Kid did her sisters make up. We were creating beauty products for the mind, conceptual products that didn’t exisit and yet were advertised in al the major magazines via high end art presentations, such as ‘instant aura crystals’ or ‘astral time capsules’ the product was the idea and the idea was yours as soon as you saw it, it was an anticonsumerist collective. Later I went to LA and began writing film scripts, and then to NYC to set up another band. Back in Kerry in 2007/8 I Produced my first feature film entitled ‘Spiderhole’ which was the first Red Camera feature

film to be completed in Ireland. Where did you get the inspiration for this movie? I own a vintage car who happens to be ‘gay’ and his name is ‘Padraig The Silver Shadow’ he has his own facebook page, the core idea here is that I am attempting to assisit him to express himself and not hide behind his magnificent exterior, he is a black ‘Rolls Royce Silver Shadow’ the premsis is that he is afriad to reveal himself fully to life as in life there is ‘love’ but there is also ‘loss’ and so he had choen to hide from the ‘loss’ so I make little video of him driving kids and friends and strangers around Kerry and he then writes his reflections on his facebook page about the joy and wonder of sharing magical moments set against the majeesty of County Kerry. Fr.Padraig appears in many of these vidoes and I had wanted to celebrate him for what he has done for Irish Culture via his writing/publications and establishing of The Diseart in Dingle, a centre for Irish Spirituality and Culture. I wanted to celebrate his life now while he is still with us and celebrate what he has lived for, languague, light and landscape. While he is not the central charcater of the film, as the central character is all of us where Mother Nature is our source and vulnerability is our common virtue, we need each other and we need Mother Earth and perpahs have to begin to explore into our relationhsip with these elements in our daily lives.
What difficulties if any did you encounter while making this movie? I made every effort to raise money to make this film but could not. The vision for the film may have been too obscure and perhaps not fashionable so to speak. Now the dificulty is in getting the word out so that people in Kerry can come to the cinema and experince it. It was difficult to get coverage even though it was screened in The Museum of Modern Art in NYC and has powerful woman such as Susan Sarandon and Rosario Dawson supporting its ideals, as well as influential men like Deepak Chopra and Russell Brand. The score alone for the film was composed by a 5 time oscar nominee J. Ralph and the subject matter of the film I feel merits sharing. It is not easy to make a film on this scale which celebrates the glory of Kerry and yet get no support for it, but it was wonderful to have the president of Ireland attend its premiere recently in Tralee. Where to from here? More films of a similar sturcture, which is basically a contemplative and meditative journey reverencing age and wisdom are planned, potentially one in Australia with an Aboriginal woman and another in Jerusalem with a retired Rabbi who now acts as a tour guide.

UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL KERRY WELCOME’S THE
“LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER”
T
he Oncology Unit in University Hospital Kerry has been open since 2001. It is a satellite unit of Cork University Hospital. The Oncology service in Kerry is evolving and is reflective of international trends with activity increasing yearly due to an aging population and the impact of improved treatments. In 2015 alone there were over 6,700 patients seen and treated by both the Oncology Outpatients and the Oncology Day Units. The Oncology Unit is run by very dedicated nursing staffs that have extensive clinical knowledge and expertise in this much specialised area. Kerry has a unique model of care whereby the same cohort of nurses run the Oncology Day Unit and also the Oncology Outpatients Clinics. This provides patients and their families with continuity of care and is very reassuring as staff will be extremely familiar with all aspects of their care. Due to the increasing demand for Oncology services in Kerry we have outgrown the current unit facilities and are in the process of looking to relocate within the hospital in order to provide a purpose built facility where patients can be treated with compassion, respect and dignity at all stages of the treatment process. The unit is delighted to be involved with “Look Good Feel Better”. Patients that attend the Oncology services are going through what can be one of the most traumatic times in their lives and the Look Good Feel Better Programme is providing an escape from reality. It allows the ladies to leave their illness behind for a short time and relax in the company of other women and be pampered by a team of beauty professionals. Look Good Feel Better also provides the women with
PROGRAMME
practical tips on how to manage their changed appearance following the side effects of their treatments. It is positive, friendly and relaxed atmospheres which can help women regain their identity and self-esteem. The Look Good Feel Better (LGFB) Programme is an international charity operating in 26 countries. The aim is to help women combat the visible side effects of cancer treatment. LGFB is supported by companies in the cosmetics industry who provide donations in the form of products and of course the expertise of their volunteer beauty consultants. It is because of their generosity that LGFB is able to help over 1,000 Irish women each year through workshops. This unique programme of free skincare
and makeup workshops is now available at University Hospital Kerry thanks to mother and daughter team Clair McEvoy and Leonie Flaherty who were instrumental in bringing forward the proposal of having this service available to the women of Kerry. We spoke with Leonie who says “Our first workshop took place on Monday 18th of April where we had 10 ladies attend. It was both an emotional and proud moment to see the months of meetings and preparations finally pay off and to see how much enjoyment our ladies got from their session. The basic thinking behind LGFB is that if you look good, it can help you to feel better and this is recognised by the different medical professions involved in patient care and treatment’’. Clair would like to thank the support they have received to date and says “We are very fortunate to have such a fantastic team of volunteers willing to give their time and expertise to this project every month, and also a huge thank you to Tara O’Halloran from FAS for coming on board and helping with fundraising”

Nutri Fit for Women Curves Tralee recently celebrated 12 years in business .When we initially opened our emphasis was primarialy on exercise --circuit training--a system developed in America where there had been huge research done and millions of dollars invested in it .Our machines are specifically designed for womens bodies and we have had tremendous success with this system over the years.....but over time I realized that exercise was only part of the equation and that education on food and lifestyle was crucial. Having always battled with weight myself I was curious to know more...it was one thing to loose weight but what was the ‘secret’ to keeping it off??? I am a qualified Biochemist

All of this combined with the learning curve of my own weight loss journey has lead to a much more comprenhensive approach in our business. So this has lead to the birth of our new business ‘’NUTRI FIT FOR WOMEN’...it has been a long time coming but I a m very excited about the future .My true passion is education and helping people.I have an empathy and understanding that only comes with having walked the walk ...being over weight and obese for huge portions of my life .My mission is to help women to not only help themselves but also their families .I believe that the greatest gift we can give our children is the gift of health ..my approach is simplify everything and just go back to basics. Our core business will still run as before because I truly believe in the ‘Curves way’ but there will be many more services on offer .When we are fully launched I will be offering ‘one to one ‘consultations ,will be available for educational talks to schools ,womens groups, families and as a Nutritional Advisior will help anyone who wants to better their lives. She came into the shop with her hands straight up in the air, about 2 feet apart, asking “would you have a headpiece this size, tis me cousin’s weddin’?” Having made sure that I wasn’t on candid camera, I told her that they were completely sold out, and wouldn’t be coming back in. Hardly an hour later, Noel Ryan, manager at Kerry airport, called into the shop and said “Carmel, I’m looking for a ladies’ hat to put planes in”. “Holy God Noel, don’t you have an airport for that?” I replied. “No!” he exclaimed “something to put paper airplanes in for a photo shoot, it’s an ad campaign”. Not every day is like that; most ladies are looking for a headpiece to enhance an outfit for a very special occasion, and that’s where we come in. From only €20 to €90, we have a wonderful range of colours and sizes in headpieces that would suit any outfit and occasion. You might be Mother of the Bride, or the babysitter from 20 years ago. WELL WE’VE FINALLY GOT THE SUN SHINING AND IF WE ARE TO BELIEVE THE OLD WIVES TALES SUCH AS THE CROWS BUILDING THEIR NESTS HIGH IN THE TREES BEING A SIGN OF A GREAT SUMMER THEN WE ARE IN FOR A SCORCHER…..JUST DON’T QUOTE ME!
As the summer casuals are in all shops at the moment and are obviously brighter and lighter you may need to layer up as our weather is unpredictable. Summer casual dressing is a very broad area and can mean dressing for several less formal maybe even outdoor events such as bbq’s, day after a wedding etc. so I’m going to try and give you a few tips to create that casual ,comfortable yet chic summer look. Let’s start with trousers. Well the ultimate summer hero has to be the white trousers; it will go with everything in your wardrobe, from the vibrant yellows to the more classical navy or black. There is a style of trousers out there to suit every age, taste and shape. The old reliable jegging has gone nowhere and is a very hardworking item in any wardrobe, for the summer swap the black for a neutral taupe or grey. Natural fibres are great for hot summer days and cotton and linen are both breathable fabrics. Generally linen trousers are a flowier look that is both comfortable yet stylish. Cropped, cut offs or 3/4’s whatever you call them are another trousers that are ideal for summer. Printed or patterned trousers are around again this season and don’t be afraid to try them, just keep the top simple and in one of the base colours in the trousers. Before we move on just a word about footwear, if you put a dark shoe/ sandal under a white trousers it can make you look shorter, so opt instead for a silver/ nude or white to elongate those lovely legs! Let’s talk about tops, there is such an array of tops from classic plain tees, vest tops/ camis to more dressier luxurious silks and depending on your lifestyle you may need a wide variety. This summer statement t-shirts are huge with graphic prints and 3d effects being the main contenders. The 3d look is where there is print on a base layer but there is also another layer with print over it to create a 3d effect, this is ideal for covering the problem tummy area. Necklines are also changing and the lower scoop neck of some tops can be just as flattering as V-necks to your upper silhouette. I am going to be daring here and state that dresses should not just be kept for formal occasions. Summer dresses are usually full of fun and print and a dress can take you from night to day by cleverly changing your shoes and accessories. Finally knitwear is always needed whether you are holidaying abroad or heading out at home in the evening. Both wool and colours are lighter and you can choose from loose knit jumpers, cropped boleros or longer cardigans. HAPPY SHOPPING,
Danny

IT’S WHAT THE DOCTOR ORDERED
EXERCISE IS MEDICIN… AND IT’S FREE!!
Over the last few decades our lives, from birth, have become increasingly inactive. Now machines replace the physical activity our parents and grandparents undertook both in the home, at work and on the farm. Even for children there is very little exercise compared to years ago. A recent study suggested that children now get less exercise than people who are confined in prison. This change is clearly co-inciding with the rise in obesity and illnesses such as diabetes and osteoporosis.
BENEFITS OF REGULAR EXERCISE
Exercise burns off some of the calories (fuel) we eat. Exercise, combined with healthy eating, reduces our risk of diabetes and heart disease. Other chronic illnesses may benefit- a recent study suggested people with Parkinson’s disease benefitted from cycling and this exercise may reduce their medication needs. Many people find that regular exercise reduces stress; patients often cite the buzz they get out of a run or gym session after a hard day at the office.
GETTING CHILDREN INTERESTED IN EXERCISE
A recent American study showed that only 15% of children achieve the guideline of 60 minutes of moderate/ vigorous exercise per day. Girls fared less well than boys. It is an important habit to incorporate into a child’s life from an early stage.
30
CONNECT MAGAZINE May 2016
Exercise helps them to build sufficient bone and muscle. It helps to develop balance. Taking part in team or group activities develops social skills and negotiation. We do not have to think of exercise as only sport based. Dancing provides great exercise. Many pre-schools and crèches have fun-based exercise programmes in their schedules. This could an important factor to consider when deciding where your child will go to school.
EXERCISE AND PREGNANCY Many women believe they should not exercise while pregnant- we get asked about this all the time. Most forms of exercise are safe apart from contact sports such as martial arts or “risky” sports like rock climbing etc. Always consult a professional such as a physio if you are unsure what is safe and what is not. Pilates is an excellent form of exercise for strengthening a woman’s core muscles and pelvic floor both before, and after, delivery. One American study in mice showed the babies born to mothers who exercised were fitter. And they believe this also applies to humans. www.rcog.org.uk has an excellent leaflet on Exercise and Pregnancy
EXERCISE FOR ADULTS
If you haven’t developed a love for exercise in your younger years it’s never too late to start. Regular exercise prevents diabetes, heart disease, arthritis. It is good for mental wellbeing. Most importantly, it prevents osteoporosis. We develop our peak bone mass in our 20’s and weight bearing exercise is crucial for this. By protecting our bones when we are young we can avoid problems later on. As women age they also lose muscle mass and, again, exercise is key to avoiding this. Osteoporosis causes major morbidity in older women so regular exercise from a young age helps to prevent it. Nowadays most trainers understand the
importance of preserving balance- this is an important factor for preventing falls later in life. Regular exercise can incorporate aspects of falls prevention.
GETTING STARTED WITH EXERCISE
There is an exercise out there for everyone!!! You don’t have to pay for expensive gym membership. Walking is free and can be done 24/7; you can start by walking for 30 mins a day. Then you can build up to 45/60/90 minutes a day. Once you are comfortable at a certain level you can then increase your pace. Even if you have an injury such a knee problem you can adapt-cycle rather than walk. Exercising in water is easier on your joints and if you can’t swim aqua aerobics or aqua jogging are alternatives. If you are unsure what is safe for you it is always better to consult a physiotherapist who can guide you. At Kerry General Hospital there is now a physio-led class for people with knee injuries. People with cardiac problems have access to nurse specialists to help them get fitter and healthier. Your GP team can also help you! So the message this month is.. Exercise is a form of medicine to treat and prevent illness. It doesn’t have to cost lots of money, it can be free. An early start is best. But it’s always “better late than never”. Summer is here-Get Started!

How is your self-esteem? Do you like yourself? Forgive yourself easily when you make mistakes? Find it easy to tolerate others’ negative view of you? Our self-esteem is shaped by our experiences of growing up. Because as a society we tend to discipline children through punishment and criticism, we often grow up feeling that we are not good enough, or somehow bad inside. All of this can leave us feeling not enough – not good enough, clever enough, pretty enough, thin enough, successful enough – and we internalize those feelings of inadequacy. We stop trying because we’re afraid of failing and somehow looking stupid. As we grow, the critical voices grow. If we dare to be happy with who we are, we are told we’re full of ourselves. If we like how we look, we’re called conceited or vain. If we are proud of our achievements, somebody will find some way to bring us down a peg or two. And sometimes, we take on the job ourselves, and become highly self-critical. Even worse, we begin to run others down so that we don’t feel so bad when we compare ourselves to them. We look at others and instead of being happy for their successes, we find things to criticize in them. We continue and reinforce our patterns of criticism and fault-finding, with ourselves and others.Wouldn’t it be nice to switch off that critical voice? We could be confident and try new things without worrying about failing. That’s why self-esteem is so important, and why we should make it our mission to increase our own. Fáilte Romhaibh By Dr. Marcas Mac Domhnaill Orthodontic Assessments Fáilte Romhaibh Parents often ask dentists whether or not orthodontic treatment is necessary for their children’s teeth. If children have crowded teeth, they may indeed need an orthodontic evaluation. Your dentist will refer you to an orthodontist if necessary. It is much easier to move teeth into their correct positions as the jaw grows. At least then, new teeth can be guided into their correct positions. There are a myriad of different types of braces available to today’s patients. Removable braces are often used in younger children to tilt teeth. The palate sometimes needs to be widened as it grows. This makes it easier for teeth to line up correctly beside one another. Fixed braces may still be the braces of choice for some treatments but nowadays other types have become available e.g. clear tray type braces. The important thing is to consult with your dentist if you feel your child has dental crowding or a jaw alignment that may need to be altered. Tús maith, leath na hoibre. As an employer why should I consider having a Drugs and Alcohol policy in my workplace?
WeeBiz Me Media Consultants
5 EASY STEPS TO SOCIAL MEDIA SUCCESS
There are five simple things any business can do right now to improve their Social Media. 1. PLAN AHEAD – Plan out what you want to achieve and when it has to happen by. Every business regardless of size should have a marketing calender and a social media strategy. Always plan month’s in advance so every element of your marketing is ready in time. 2. KNOW WHAT IS RIGHT – Not every Social Media platform is right for every business. Understand who you’re target audience are and where they are. 3. COMMIT – Be prepared to commit time and resources to it. It’s pointless having a plan in place, and then lose faith before you’ve given it the necessary time to happen. 4. CONTENT – Social media is multi-media. You need to develop a resource of articles, blogs, videos, imagery and graphics to engage with your audience. 5. CONVERSE – Social media is a two-way street, stay engaged and converse with your audience, don’t just post and disappear – be prepared to respond and interact! WeeBiz Media are a Kerry Based Social Media Consultancy, offering Training and Social Media Management for Businesses, Groups and Organisations weebizmedia@gmail.com 0868162105 (Ken) www. weebizmedia.com
It is absolutely essential these days that employers consider drawing up a policy on use of Alcohol and Drugs in the workplace not only for the purpose of raising in disciplinary matters, but to also serve as guide and reference document for both employers and employees. When it comes to addressing complex employment law provisions an employer may find him/herself exposed where such policy is not in place. The general duties of employers and employees are provided under the Safety Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. The general duties of an employer are: •
Managing and conducting work activities in such a way as to prevent, so far as is reasonably practicable, any improper conduct or behaviour likely to put the safety, health or welfare at work of his or her employees at risk;
As well as this the Labour Court has upheld the principle that alcoholism is a disability under the Employment Equality Acts 19982004. The decision confirms the principle that those with alcoholism cannot be treated less favourably at work. For advice on drafting a clear policy on Drugs and Alcohol in the Workplace to protect your company or if you require information on an Employee Assistance Programme please contact one of our HR Advisors on 0667102887.
Back to Work Enterprise Allowance (BTWEA) This scheme is aimed primarily at getting unemployed individuals to start their own business. The economic recovery has gathered pace, offering many unemployed workers the potential to pursue new business opportunities. Who Qualifies? Most individuals who are in receipt of social welfare and/or part of a community scheme for more than 12 months should qualify. Anyone interested should check with their local social welfare office. A similar scheme, the Short-Term Enterprise Allowance may be available for those who don’t qualify for BTWEA. What happens to my Welfare Payments? Individuals get to keep a portion of
their primary social welfare payment under BTWEA as follows: Year 1 100% Year 2 75% It should be noted that rent supplement and other extra benefits may be affected. What are tax implications? Individual should register for tax. The BTWEA payment which replaces your existing payment is not taxable. Individuals should qualify for Start Your Own Business Relief which provides a two year exemption from income tax.
The individual would be required to make a minimum 20% contribution. Other Things to Consider • Do you want responsibility of being your own boss? • Have you the necessary skills and/or experience? • Is this an opportunity to set up your own business?
Are There Any Other Supports? The Enterprise Support Grant (ESG) may be available for those who qualify for BTWEA. The ESG can pay up to €2,500 in a two year period towards cost of setting up business.
