DR. Ciara Kelly By Marisa Reidy
MANY know her as the straight-talking doctor turned media star, but Dr Ciara Kelly says she still finds it quite peculiar when people refer to her as ‘outspoken’. The former GP and now full time Newstalk radio host says that she has always been someone who just says what she thinks and not what she’s supposed to say. “It never occurred to me until a number of people starting saying it - that I was outspoken, but I don’t see it that way,” Ciara tells Connect. “If I believe in something, I say it and although it’s never nice to be in the firing line for those views, I’m not just going to say what I’m supposed to say. Even if I’m in the minority of one, I shouldn’t change my view – that’s quite weak isn’t it.” Now a familiar voice on
her week day ‘Lunchtime Live’ radio show, Dr Ciara Kelly began her career as a GP - but not before a very short-lived shot at the world of finance! Ciara laughs when she recalls how, having been refused entry into drama in Trinity, she turned down an offer to study Law, and opted instead for Commerce. It was a decision she would live to regret. “I went in to Commerce in 1988 and I was very young at the time and thought this would get me a job, but it turned out I absolutely hated it with a passion,” Ciara admits. “I hated accounting and finance and this was the worst course imaginable, so half way through the year I said to myself ‘I think I’ll do medicine.’” Thankfully, Ciara had had a very good Leaving Cert
which allowed her to reapply through the CAO, and the rest, as she says, is history! She graduated from UCD until 1997 and went on to complete her internship at the Mater Hospital. She began work as a GP in a practice in North Strand in Dublin’s North Inner City, then moved to a practice in Bray, before becoming partner in her own practice where she worked for close to 14 years. Asked how a full

time GP decides to switch career to full time media star, Ciara says it happened somewhat by accident – and was not a decision she took lightly. “My daughter, who is now 17, went to school with a girl who’s mum worked in the Sunday Independent and we would often chat about health-related stuff that was on the news,” she explained.

Connect | Lifestyle “One day, this lady said she was talking to her editor about me writing a piece and I nearly had a heart attack. I had never written a health piece before and the idea of offering my opinion to the public was quite terrifying. I remember thinking, oh my God I can’t do this.” But so it she did – and the pieces became more regular, which ultimately led to Ciara writing a weekly column for the Sunday Independent, which she does to this day. With her new found media fame writing for one of Ireland’s leading Sunday newspapers, more media opportunities came up for Ciara, including regular guest appearances on TV and radio panels – including of course, resident doctor on RTE’s Operation Transformation By 2015/2016 Ciara was working round the clock, juggling her general practice work with her media commitments, including at this stage her own weekend radio show on Newstalk. It wasn’t until the end of 2017, when she was offered her current weekday show at the station, that she realised she could no longer do both. “It was a very tough decision to leave medicine behind, as it’s what I did all my adult life so it was like I had to give myself permission. But I wanted to focus actively on
the media. Being a doctor is kind of an identity too and there was a sense of ‘I don’t know who I am if I’m not a doctor’. And then of course there’s the attachment and responsibility that you have for your patients and you think ‘I can’t believe I’m going to walk away from that.” But after much soul searching, Ciara made the decision to concentrate fully on her media career, and says she is very happy with her decision . But while she’s no longer working directly in the medical field, that doesn’t mean she’s not still passionate about the health of our nation. Asked what she felt was the country’s biggest failings from a health system point of view – she didn’t hold back. “There are two major issues really – access and communication,” Ciara told Connect. “Access is a huge problem for patients. Waiting lists are terrible and we use our emergency departments semi inappropriately because our outpatients and elective procedures process is so banjaxed. I did it myself as a GP – if I was worried
6 | Connect Kerry | September 2019
about a patient and they were vulnerable I’d send them to the ED, but that needs to change because while people are languishing around on trolleys and on waiting lists they will get sicker and die. So we really need to streamline our access to services.” Equally frustrating for Ciara is a distinct lack of communication with patients and the consequences that brings – case in point being the recent Cervical Check scandal. “Communication with patients is simply not what it should be and they are not being shown enough respect in terms of communication,” she says. “We need to seriously up our game – as doctors, nurses and all health care professionals in showing respect to patients and providing a patient-centred support where things are explained to people in full and with dignity.” Now living in Greystones where she was born and reared, the mum of four is just recently back from a trip to a refugee camp in Ethiopia with GOAL – an experience she describes as a privilege.
As the charity’s ambassador, she was there to see a new nutritional programme the charity is offering to mothers and babies, and says what she witnessed was a real eye opener. “I was in an area called Gambella, where there are a huge amount of refugee camps holding people from South Sudan. There are 400,000 Ethiopian people living in this region and about 500,000 refugees so it kind of puts things into perspective in relation to all this nonsense about countries taking in too many refugees. This place has done more than its fair share to help what is a humanitarian crisis,” She said. “I went to see GOAL’s new nutritional programme for mothers and babies and they are really doing some magnificent work. I have been to west Africa and south East Asia before, but I have never seen

For any bride or groom to be...
Connect | Lifestyle
For any bride or groom to be, there is so much to look forward to, but with a plan in place you will enjoy the journey even more. I suggest that you start as you mean to continue, and the key is to start in time, 1 to 2 years before the wedding not with a month to go!!! As a Wellness Coach/ Nutritional Advisor I would recommend you start early to put healthy habits in place ,and have SMART (Specific ..Measurable .. Achievable..Realistic and Timed ) Goals, so that you are stronger, fitter and healthier as a couple .Planning is key, as is time management. I look at 4 pillars of health.. FOOD, EXERCISE, SLEEP, REST AND RELAXATION. (Supplementation if necessary like B Complex especially for the Brides to help cope better with Stress) FOOD Choose real food, eat in season , batch cook, have a weekly plan, and avoid
any quick fix or weight loss gimmicks. Always eat breakfast , never skip meals, add protein to all meals and snacks and do not be afraid to add healthy fats like nuts/ seeds /avocados /oily fish to your daily routine. It is important to NOURISH your body so you can FLOURISH!! Drink at least 1 1/2 litres water /day and avoid too much caffeine. Go decaffeinated or have herbal teas after lunch.
EXERCISE..You need a combo of cardio and resistance training that will challenge and change your body and help you cope with stress. Our motto its 'Exercise is King.. Nutrition is Queen ..Put them together and you have your Kingdom' . A bride and groom work better as a team, so too do food and exercise .. SLEEP..A body heals when it sleeps and also is better able to deal with stress .Aim for 7/8 hours a night otherwise you are
in Sleep Debt, where your Immunity is compromised, you have more cravings for sugar and carbohydrates and you suffer brain fog !!!
REST AND RELAXATION..is an integral part of any wellness program. Otherwise our poor brides and grooms will be burnt out and living on their nerves!! The build up to any wedding needs to be enjoyed. There will be stress but if you, as a couple follow the 4 pillars, you are more resilient and can enjoy the journey even more . This advice is for life, and these healthy habits are setting you up for parenthood in the future if you so wish . A life lived in health is a life well lived ..We all in Nutrifit for Women wish that Health and Happiness are constant companions to all our Brides and Grooms to be in the future!!

Top tip #5 Borrow wisely
If you are borrowing for your wedding, compare rates from all the financial providers. Many credit unions offer specific wedding loan products with competitive rates. They may also offer short term bridging finance to cover costs until wedding cash gifts are received. Borrow as little as possible and don’t be tempted to spread the payments too far into the future. This will cost you more in interest and could have an impact on your future plans.

Avoid putting wedding expenses on credit cards and overdrafts as the APR on this type of finance can be high. By borrowing from the credit union you benefit from free loan protection, no hidden fees or charges and flexible repayment terms. Insurance (of all types!)
Consider taking out wedding insurance as it offers you more security if something does go wrong -such as cancellation, or a trader failing to deliver a service. Many insurance providers offer wedding insurance so make sure you know what the policy covers and compare costs before you buy. If you are planning a honeymoon of a lifetime, ensure that you have all the cover you need when it comes to travel insurance. The credit union in partnership with Coveru.ie can offer competitive travel insurance rates that are exclusive to our members and will make sure you have the right level of cover for your honeymoon.

1. always suggest doing something with your hair that you would normally do if your were going to an occasion yourself. Be Open - Your hair trial gives you full range to try styles you have never tried before and at least when you have the time at the trial its when both you and your stylist can be honest with one another on whether your comfortable with the style or not that is being created. Accessories -There are so many great hair accessories available now to add to your hairstyle. This would also all depend on the look you are going for and whether you decide on a veil or not! Extend Yourself - Don't shy away from having hair extensions on your wedding day!! No one needs to know only you and your stylist, takes the drama out of trying to grow your hair or looking for that fuller look. All of this can be created with extensions. The good thing about extensions is that if you are worried about a certain hairstyle falling down and loose on the day the extensions will hold it. Keep Having Regular Haircuts & Treatments - Having regular haircuts will keep the hair fresh especially as your day grows closer also having regular hair treatments means your

hair will be like gloss on your wedding day. I always say start at least a year before the big day. But Don't Get Your Hair Cut Just Before The Wedding - Better to be safe than sorry! Especially avoid a big change of hair style. Look After Those Locks - Pay special attention to your hair care in the run up to your wedding. If you're unsure of what you need to be doing and using as home care call into us and we will be happy to help! Be Product Free On The Day - On your trail day and wedding day, have clean and dry hair. Avoid using a lot of conditioner that morning especially a leave in one as this can make the hair silky and sometime hard to work with. Be Flexible - Relax, be flexible (you never know what the weather could be like on the day but you just have to go with it if small changes have to be made to the hair to suit the weather) and especially enjoy your day!!!

Marriage Ceremony Music
Congratulations! The big day is coming up soon! Here is what to think about re ceremony music Waiting music - Instrumentals are lovely here and you really can have any style you would like here as if in a religious ceremony the mass has not begun so once it is respectful it is ok. Something personal to family/friends here really engages the crowd before the bride/groom even arrives. Entrance music - Here is the big moment for the bridal party walking down the aisle. Bridal Marches are very popular here as instrumentals as there is no defined end to the piece so there is no rush down the aisle. Examples I would suggest listening to are ‘Gabriels Oboe (Instrumental).Bridal Chorus – Wagner (Instrumental),Wedding March – Mendelssohn (Instrumental) and Pachelbel’s Canon in D (Instrumental) or for the more pop music inclined ‘a thousand years - Christina Perri’,’ how long will I love you - Ellie Goulding’ Candles - Here again an instrumental can be great as some priests/celebrants take no break between the bridal party arriving and the lighting of the candles but some may say a quick welcome beforehand. This only lasts about 30 seconds so those It is important that your guests experience a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere as they arrive at your wedding reception. Having the right live music at your drinks reception is very important. It will set the tone for the rest of your special day and create the right ambience for you and your guests. Having a musician who can respond to your guests and deliver music to suit their needs rather than sticking to a routine set of tunes will make the day special for everyone. The music at your drinks reception should have something for everyone - regardless of age. This will break the ice and help guests feel relaxed and included. When you arrive, your guests will be mingling and chatting and ready to celebrate your big day. John Collins is a saxophonist with a modern rich tone and high quality sound. Tralee 20 | Connect Kerry | September 2019
suggested in the entrance music are good options here too. Psalm (religious ceremony) - In a religious ceremony you are quite limited here as you want to keep it upbeat and happy but it does need to be religious examples that are nice here would be ‘eagles wings’ ‘ag criost an sial’. Sign of Peace (shaking of hands) - again a happy instrumental here is lovely and with regards songs ‘let there be love’ is a great uptempo happy piece. Gifts- Instrumental here or a verse of a peaceful song e.g ‘fields of Gold’, ‘Amazing Grace’ or a pop/music theatre/trad song that is respectful. Communion - Ideally at communion you should stick to liturgical music. You will need to pick one possibly two hymns or one hymn and one modern/trad song here depending on the number of guests receiving holy communion. ‘Ave Maria’,’Pie Jesu’, Panis Angelicus’,‘You Raise me up‘, ‘fields of gold’, ‘Amazing Grace’. born John is an experienced, trained musician. He played in London for wedding receptions and social events for many years. He now plays regularly at venues throughout Kerry. John is passionate about making your day really special. He has over 1500 tunes to suit all tastes, ranging from contemporary to classic songs. John will create the perfect atmosphere on your wedding day and will include a special tune for the bride and groom to make the day more personal for them Add a touch of class to your pre-dinner drinks reception and give your guests a unique and memorable experience. You can hear John live at The Cork Jazz Festival on Sunday 27th October from 23.30 to 1.30 in The River Lee
Signing of the Marriage register (and usually photos taken) - The mass part, if a religious ceremony, is over so again once kept respectful you can have any choice you would like here. I suggest maybe have ¾ songs ready for here for photo opportunities to happen too. Do not rule anything out! Pick songs that are personal to you as any song can be slowed down and made suitable, for example look up ‘500 miles- sleeping at last’ which is a cover of the famous proclaimers song and it is beautiful! Bridal Party exit - This is the song you and your partner begin your journey as a married couple! Be creative and personal here, anything goes! I hope you found this helpful and please do not hesitate to ask any questions. Looking Forward to hearing from you Lisa Curran T: 0851442124

THE PERFECT BRIDAL BOUQUET

Choosing your bridal bouquet
Hi everyone, Jennifer from Flowers by Jen here. This month I want to share a few tips with everyone about how to choose the prefect bridal bouquet. From romantic cascading bouquets to traditional hand- ties bouquets brides have many options when it comes to choosing their wedding bouquet. Wedding bouquets and flowers are an integral part of any wedding and effectively make your special day more colourful, vibrant and memorable. They can bring a whole picture together – tying together colour schemes and themes, as well as providing sweet scents. Picking the right bouquet can help make the dress even more beautiful and romantic.
1.
Choose the wedding dress before your bouquet Before you choose your wedding bouquet, you should choose your wedding dress first. The design and floral components of your bouquet will depend on the colour, style and overall design of your dress. So, when you first meet with your florist do bring a photograph of your gown with you and this will help you both to decide on an appropriate bridal bouquet to accompany it.
2.
Consider the shape and size of your wedding bouquet Wedding bouquets come in various sizes and shapes, so it is very important to consider this when choosing your wedding bouquet style.Make sure the shape and size of your wedding bouquet perfectly suits the feature details of your dress. Bouquet fashions are changing day by day, but the most important thing is that the flower arrangement perfectly complements your wedding dress.
3.
Consider the colour combination of your wedding dress and bouquet Not all wedding dresses are plain and simple

white. You must consider that there are various shades of whites, ivory and creams available. Off-white and white dresses can be difficult to match with the same colour flowers, so be sure to bring a photo of your dress or a piece of your dress material that will help your florist when designing the colour scheme of your bouquet. You should, of course also consider the colour of the other flowers and the wedding colours in general. Spare dress material can also be used to wrap around the stems of your bouquet to perfectly match your wedding day ensemble.
4.
Choose seasonal bridal flowers Certain flowers won’t be available all year round. Choosing flowers that are available in your wedding season will help you save a lot of money. Your florist will be able to tell you what flowers will be available and will go through the most appropriate and attractive seasonal blooms to incorporate into your bouquet. Also, choose flowers that represent your wedding day and the emotions you will be feeling but don’t compromise the overall look.
5.
Choose a comfortable bouquet and one that you can hold easily It’s obvious there will be some nerves before your wedding, so it’s important to choose a bouquet that you feel comfortable holding. I suggest try holding the bouquet in one hand and below your hip, slightly away from you, so that the shape of your dress can be easily seen. This will make you more relaxed and create the best pose for your photographs

MY TOP 3
for dressing for Ladies Day These are my three tips for Listowel Races. As it is one of the first race meetings of the Autumn, I would suggest a beautiful winter coat, (start that as your base) and either a nice pair of classic trousers or a good tailored dress . Another suggestion and one that is very current for Autumn is the trousers suit with a pussy cat bow blouse. Hats which are a always a favourite of mine, I would suggest a soft felt fabric as it is ideal for that time of year, My other suggestion when it comes to accessories are Gloves and use them to introduce a splash of colour. Your bag and shoes put the finishing touches to an outfit, When you are purchasing a bag, scale is very important I e if you are tall make sure you have a good size clutch bag to complement your height, if you are a little shorter my suggestion is you keep the bag a neater size. Shoes are wonderful to complement an outfit and this season the 70s vibe goes right through to the shoes, block heels are fantastic to walk around in especially at the races. My tip here weather it is shoes or boots is to make sure they are comfortable otherwise it can throw your posture, so no matter what you spend on your outfit if you don't carry yourself correctly the outfit won't complement you. My last tip is to, bring your shoulders back and down and enjoy a great day at Listowel races. 26 | Connect Kerry | September 2019

Finding your Ideal Wedding Dress Firstly Congratulations! Let the Planning begin. Lots of things to think about so its best to be prepared.
TOP 10 TIPS 1.
on buying your wedding dress
Most Bridal Boutiques work by appointment so its best to call in advance.
2. 3.
It is advisable to go shopping at least 8/9 months in advance as there is an ordering period of 20 weeks for delivery of your dress. You also need to allow 6 weeks for alterations. If you do have a short engagement it is possible to buy a dress in Finesse off the rail at a reduced cost. Shopping for a wedding dress can be overwhelming so It is advisable not to take too many people with you as too many opinions can confuse the bride. Bring people that you trust 2/3 people is sufficient.

4. 5. 7. 8. 9.
With regards to the dress.... It is best to go shopping with an open mind, try all the different styles on and see what style suits your body shape best. When that is determined you can then concentrate on the detail that you like. Put trust in your assistant, remember we are serving brides for 19 years so we will have a good eye for what suits you best. Don't go to too many boutiques as again this can be very confusing.
6.
Payment...Most boutiques take a 50% deposit when you order the dress and the balance is paid when the dress arrives.
If you have a budget let your assistant know so she can guide you in the right direction. Alterations..... Finesse provide an alteration service in-store. By offering this service we can ensure that the bride is 100% happy when leaving the store. The alteration fee is paid directly to the seamstress by the bride. Don't spend hours looking at dresses on-line because what may be beautiful on the model may not suit you. Trying on wedding dresses yourself will educate you far more than hours of thrawling the net.
10.
Last but not least, try to relax and enjoy the experience of being treated like a princess for the day!
Looking forward to seeing you in Finesse where you will receive a warm welcome from

THINKING ABOUT A FAMILY?
YOUR FUTURE:
We are a generation that leaves nothing to chance, the ultimate planners. When wedding bells are on the horizon it can take two years, a wedding planner and a flurry of helpers to get to the altar. Building a house can involve architects, engineers, interior designers and a myriad of helpers. Yet we just presume that having a baby will just happen. Unfortunately, in my daily practice I meet women and couples who find out that it won’t be easy or may never happen. This often comes as a huge shock. In the past few years I have met women who have undertaken Fertility Checks by chance only to find that their ovarian reserve is so low that they may have to go straight to IVF or egg donation. This comes as a shock. People often say “But we are in the middle of building our house.” “We have a wedding planned for two years’ time, can we wait.” “I’m not in a relationship yet, but I do want a baby in the future” What Are The Facts About Future Fertility? We know that 1:6 couples will have difficulty conceiving.
34 | Connect Kerry | September 2019
A woman is born with the number of eggs that she will have for all of her life. Over the time the number and quality will diminish. This can be affected by lifestyle such as smoking, exposure to chemicals, surgery or chemotherapy / radiation. We know that the decline in fertility is most dramatic from age 35. Pregnancy is 25% less likely in women over age 35. While men produce fresh sperm on an ongoing basis, it now known that age is also an important factor. Lifestyle, childhood surgery in the testes, mumps, medical conditions can all affect fertility. However, in men lifestyle changes can reverse fertility issues. In women this is not so easy. Testing and Assessing Future Fertility Potential In recent times we see many women coming to check out future fertility potential. This involves a blood test to measure Anti Mullerian Hormone (AMH) combined with an ultrasound scan to visualise the ovaries. For men a basic semenalysis provides a lot of information.
Are There Options If Fertility Is Diminished? When fertility could be an issue we would ideally like couples to start trying for a baby straight away. However, we are fully aware that circumstances are not always ideal i.e. women may not have a partner. Couples may not be in a position to have a baby right now. But technology is advancing so much that the potential for egg freezing is now a very realistic for women. Those eggs are frozen to be used many years down the line. It is also great to see women being confident and independent to go down the road of using donor sperm (we provide this service at The Scotia Clinic) to create a family. IVF can allow couples to create embryos to freeze and create babies in future years. Life’s big decisions can be helped by having the information that allows you to make that decision. Fertility counsellors can be very helpful to facilitate your decisions and choices. So we would like this generation to plan their future family as much as they plan other aspects of their lives.

While many of us choose to go further-a-field in search of a good time in the summer months, it is important to remember what great places we have right on our doorstep in County Kerry. One such place is the town of Killorglin, located on both the Ring of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic way, the area hosts a number of festivals throughout the summer including K-Fest, the returning Flavour of Killorglin, not to mention the infamous Puck Fair. I headed to Killorglin for the day to check out some of the great dining and experiences the town has to offer. My day in Killorglin began with a spot of brunch at the Mill Coffee Shop. Located on Mill Road close to the centre of town, the small but bright cafe was busy for the afternoon but my order was soon taken by a friendly member of staff. The cafés interesting selection of crepes on offer caught my eye from the moment I set eyes on the menu and I chose a Strawberry Nutella crepe
to accompany my latte. I awaited my order at a table on the street outside where I could enjoy my meal in the warm afternoon sunshine. My food soon arrived and I immediately tucked into my crepe. Sprinkled with icing sugar and filled with fresh strawberries and a healthy serving of chocolate nutella, my crepe proved to be a deliciously sweet treat, further enhanced when partnered with a revitalising latte. My fantastic opening meal of the day at the Mill Coffee Shop left me full of optimism for the rest of my day in Killorglin.
beach and its beautiful surroundings, made even more so by the rare but fabulous weather. I strolled the beach for the rest of the afternoon, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere until finally my appetite got the better of me and I returned to Killorglin in search of lunch. Following the heavenly scents of freshly baked breads and cakes, I headed to Jack’s Bakery and Deli, on Lower Bridge Street for my lunch. I was in amazement at the variety of cakes, breads and wines on display in the small premise and after a quick scan of the sandwich menu hung by the door I decided on ‘The American’ toasted sandwich. Promptly prepared by a welcoming member of staff, my lunch was soon ready to consume and I took a seat at one of the tables just outside the premise where I excitedly unwrapped my sandwich. Containing an interesting combination of ingredients including ham, cheddar and gherkin, all served in a crisp olive bread, I savoured each flavoursome bite of the tasty sandwich as I relaxed outside the premise. After an amazing lunchtime meal courtesy of Jacks Bakery & Deli, I was ready to go and continue exploring Killorglin once again. I set off at a gentle pace
Now re-energized and eager to make the most of the sunny day, I hopped back into the car and took the tenminute drive to Cromane beach. The beach was populated with likeminded dog-walkers, families and tourists all enjoying the pebbly

and took time to admire some of the local monuments dotted around town including the celebrated ‘King Puck ‘statue and ‘The Diaspora’, an expertly crafted wooden sculpture commemorating all those who have emigrated from Ireland. Making my way up town I stumbled upon the Railway Bridge Trail, leading me to the Metal Bridge which the old Killorglin railway once used to cross the River Laune. From this vantage point I could take in the stunning sights of the beautiful scenery surrounding the tranquil river. While the short trail was an intriguing escape into the past, I soon headed back to the present, walking back to town in search of dinner to complete my day. The Manor Inn provided the perfect setting in which to spend my dinner. Located on the Iveragh Road, just away from the hustle and bustle of town, the bar was filled with locals enjoying a pint while the restaurant provided a quiet space in which to relax with one’s dinner. I was quickly welcomed by a member of staff and seated in a cosy nook where I studied my menu, settling on a Beef Lasagne to quell my appetite. Served with generous portions of french fries, salad and coleslaw, my beef lasagne was well presented as well as flavoursome and filling, making for a hearty dinner, the perfect antidote to a hungry stomach after an active day. A friendly waitress
made sure to check if everything was alright as I enjoyed my delicious dish and reflected on my trip. My dinner at the Manor Inn Killorglin was wholly positive, delicious food combined with great hospitality and a welcoming atmosphere combining to create a fantastic dinner time experience. While we all need to get away times, my top-notch Taste of Killorglin left me in no doubt that our local towns in Kerry can provide as good a day out as anywhere on the planet and should not be overlooked.

PIETA HOUSE Support and Care for Kerry By Marisa Reidy
“We are here if you need us just reach out and connect. We can help and support you and your family” – truly comforting words from the manager of Pieta House, Tralee, Cora O’Brien, who has seen firsthand the life-changing effects the service can have on people. The Listowel native, who has been at the helm of the suicide and self-harm crisis service since 2015 says there is absolutely no shame in reaching out for help, insisting that it should considered the same as seeking the help of a doctor if you were physically ill. Thankfully, she says, a lot more people are finally beginning to think like that and the stigma around suicide is slowly being broken down - but there is still a way to go! Pieta House, which operates 15 centres across Ireland, opened its doors in Tralee in 2014, offering free, professional support to those who are suicidal, are self-harming or have been bereaved by suicide. Already this year, the Tralee service has offered almost 2,300 hours of support to hundreds of people across the county – from one to one counselling hours, assessments, family support and bereavement support and counselling. The fact that the centre is so busy is a very positive thing, Cora says, as it means people are finally reaching out for help and support. And contrary to what some may believe, it’s not just young people who are accessing the service, she says, but people of all ages and of all walks of life. “There’s not a ‘typical’ person who we see here at Pieta
House – it’s right across the board,” she explained. “We have young people who are self-harming but equally we have the same amount of older people who come to us with suicidal intentions. “And again, the reason that people come varies so much too. Lots of people think that people are depressed or have mental health issues, but that’s not always the case. People come to us for so many reasons, from a life event, to a relationship breakup, to financial worries.” In the Tralee centre, manager Cora is ably assisted by bereavement manager Amber Kavanagh, a Ballydesmond native who oversees the suicide bereavement service at the Tralee base. She deals primarily with those who have been bereaved by suicide, assessing their individual needs and ensuring they receive the maximum support they require from Pieta House. The Tralee centre also employs five fully trained, accredited psychotherapists who, in addition to their own qualifications, are also trained by Pieta House. It also has four clinical support staff, a child therapist and a suicide bereavement liaison officer (SBLO) – a relatively new post in Kerry offering immediate support and assistance to a family or community who has lost a person to suicide. In terms of the one to one counselling offered at Pieta House, Cora explained that after an initial assessment, a client will be matched with a therapist based on their individual needs. “They offer solution focussed
40 | Connect Kerry | September 2019
therapy, so during the course of the counselling clients will work closely with their therapist to help move past suicidal thoughts and, if they are self-harming, teach them different ways of coping with their emotions,” Cora explained. “During their time with us, we will help them leave despairing thoughts behind and focus on reasons for living.” Hugely important for client to realise and remember, Cora says, is that self-harm and thoughts of suicide are more common than most people think and can affect anyone – so it’s important to remember that negative feelings and emotional pain are temporary. “With the support of family, friends and professional services like ours, you can move on from this dark place,” she said.
explained. If a person is suicidal, their behaviour may change. They may have isolated themselves and become withdrawn or their performance at school or work may be suffering. They may talk about death or about feeling hopeless. If you notice any such worrying changes in behaviour, Pieta House advises that you should never be afraid to ask the question: ‘Are you suicidal?’ The person will either say yes or no and experience shows that many are actually relieved to have their fears out in the open. It may be understandable that you may be afraid or not know what to do, but the involvement of friends and family is crucial, as a person who is feeling this way would need love, support and understanding.
INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES: If you are concerned that your loved one is suicidal or selfharming you too can refer them to Pieta House in Tralee, Cora

Connect | Lifestyle events to keep its local services operating. The Tralee centre has its own fundraiser on board responsible for all the fundraising in the South West and that man is Con O Connor a native of Tralee (Direct line 066 714 3420). The local community also plays a vital role in ensuring the day to day services continue to run, however. Cora says that the people of Kerry have been immense in helping support its services by organising fundraising event rights across the country, adding that this support is very much appreciated. She says families and individuals who have been through the service realise the positive impact it has had on them and are keen to give back, and it is this immense support that plays a vital role helping the charity touch so many lives in such a positive way. Importantly, all funds raised through local fundraising events stay in Kerry. “Pieta House is so lucky to have some great committees, volunteers, local fundraisers and indeed the local communities around the county. Without the great work they do, there simply would not be a Pieta House in Kerry, and we can’t thank them enough for all that they do," she said. The charity’s flagship fundraiser
is of course its Darkness Into Light 5km walk, which, from small beginnings, has grown dramatically year on year. In 2018 over 200,000 people took part in 150 locations, in 16 countries across 5 continents. Cora explained that the walk provides an opportunity for people to connect with their local community and to show their support for those who have been bereaved by suicide. The experience, she says, is a hugely rewarding one for those who take part and that, as well as raising funds, also helps the charity continue to raise awareness in the global fight against suicide and self-harm. Since Darkness Into Light began, almost €20 million has been raised. FEEDACK There is probably no better validation for any charity than knowing that what you’re doing is making a real difference, but particularly for a charity like Pieta house, where people’s lives are in your hands. Cora says that nothing gives her and her colleagues more pleasure than seeing the lifesaving work that is being done in Kerry and hearing from those very people whose lives have been touched. “The feedback we get is brilliant and there is nothing more rewarding that seeing a client

You have to ask yourself too, where would those people we have seen this year have gotten the support they needed if Pieta House wasn’t here?” ‘FEELGOOD FOR PIETA CAMPAIGN’ This time of year can be difficult for many so in the Autumn of 2018 Pieta launched a Feelgood for Pieta Campaign .It was a great success with thousands of people ,companies and organisations doing everything from Coffee mornings, Yoga, Mindfulness sessions, Walks, Auctions, Raffles, Tractor and Motor Runs, Quizzes, Concerts, Bikeathons, Floatation Therapy/Wellness sessions and even having lunch for Pieta etc . STRESS URINARY INCONTINENCE Deirdre Fanning Consultant Urologist, Bon Secours Hospital Tralee and Limerick Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) is the involuntary leakage of urine, which can occur when a woman coughs, laughs or sneezes. Indeed any activity that increases the pressure within the abdominal cavity can cause the leakage, as excess pressure is placed upon the weakened pelvic floor muscles. Dancing, trampolining, bouncy castle activities and star jumps in the gym are common provoking factors that are mentioned in the clinic. Embarrassingly the complaint can occur during intimate activities causing women to withdraw with a potential negative impact on relationships.
abdominal and pelvic region is performed to out rule any abnormality of the vaginal skin condition or opening of the bladder, to assess pelvic floor strength and for prolapse.
SUI represents a major health problem for women as they age. But it is important to note that the complaint can occur in women of all ages. The demand for treatment is increasing as the population expands and ages. It is estimated that just over 50% of women suffer from SUI to some degree. There is an 11 to 20% lifetime chance of a woman undergoing a single operation for SUI or prolapse by the age of 80. A number of women undergo a repeat operation as they age, particularly if their weight increases significantly, if they suffer from chronic constipation or a chronic lung disease.
• • •
In many women, SUI can be present in combination with Overactive Bladder (OAB) symptoms, which I have discussed before in Connect. OAB is urinary frequency, urgency and leakage of urine, which occurs when an individual (man or woman) is racing to the toilet to pass urine. When the two types of incontinence are present together, it is called Mixed Urinary Incontinence. When I see a woman with SUI or MUI a thorough history is examined with a particular focus on fluid intake, bowel habit, and gynaecological and obstetric details. Thereafter an examination of the
Conservative measures are always advised in the first instance and most women will have received this advice from their GP: • •
Elimination of bladder irritants from the diet A concerted effort at pelvic floor exercises (ideally under the supervision of a physiotherapist as the technique can be difficult to master) Weight loss where appropriate Elimination of constipation Smoking cessation
using a sling made from the strong tissue from a woman’s own abdominal wall tissues can be formed. This is known as an autologous or Rectus Fascia Sling. If you have an issue with SUI or indeed MUI, I would advise having a pelvic examination at a minimum and observation of conservative measures to improve your situation.
In women who have failed to become satisfied by following conservative measures and who feel that their quality of life is badly compromised there is the option of surgery. There is no good medication to treat SUI. Surgery can be an injection into the drainage tube of the bladder (the urethra) to offer short to medium term relief from SUI to a sling procedure that supports the urethra during times of increased pressure within the abdominal cavity. The synthetic transvaginal tape (TVT) surgery is currently on hold in Ireland and the UK. A sling procedure

My Journey so far. Talking about ourselves can difficult at any time, but when you have gone through an addiction and you are willing to talk to help others it’s a huge step, we are delighted to chat to Seamus Kelly, Adopted Kerryman whom I had the pleasure of meeting last year when his wife won a makeover with ourselves here in Connect, I guess his honesty at the time of nominating her swayed the judges no end and I thought it would be encouraging for people going through the same thing to hear that there is light at the tunnel so we caught up and he told us about life over the past few years the good and the bad. Seamus tell us a little about yourselfI’m Seamus Kelly and I’m 38 years of age. I'm happily married and work
by Seamus Kelly
in my dream job. To look at me you would think that I'm a happy go lucky person who loves to laugh and joke. Behind my smile and my personality lies a recovering alcoholic. Drink has always played a part in my life, growing up in an unstable environment my mother was an alcoholic from the age of 13, my grandmother who raised me was always wary of me drinking and wouldn't allow it. When did you have your first drink and where did it lead to; At the age of 27 after moving to Kerry and being free from parental pressure I tried my 1st drink. 11 years later I'm picking up the pieces on a daily basis. I have lied to my wife, to my friends to others just to get a drink it's an all consuming selfish addiction one that was intertwined with my mental health. The addicts mind can be an explosive
and dangerous place, it can become a problem so very quickly. It takes over your whole life. I remember being in a certain former job drinking during my lunch hour in the bathroom and still thinking that everyone around me was against me. My lowest point or my rock bottom came after a failed suicide attempt, when I came home from hospital to give out that my wife had thrown away all the drink and still refused to beleive I had a problem. When did you realise you had a problem and needed that help? December 7th 2017 was the day I knew I had to change, my wife and myself were driving to Tralee to bring our dogs to Santa Paws and an argument started. My wife pulled over and yelled at me "How good of a husband do you actually think you are to me" that moment, that question, the realisation that I knew the answer but couldn't reply (it took me 24 hours to answer that question) was the moment I knew I had a problem. What made my mind up was the fact we weren't even married a year and my wife was asking me a question no husband should have to be asked nor a question a wife should ever have to ask. I took myself to pieta house to sort my mental health issues but also went to Brandon House to talk through my addiction issues. How long before you could actually talk to people other than family and support and admit that you had a problem?
it was Dec 3rd 2018 I stood in a room for the first time and said "My name is Seamus and I am an alcoholic" I have repeated this phrase so many times in the last 20 months but nothing will ever be as powerful or emotional as that first time. Where are you at presently with it all? I'm here sober 20 months later, my wife is a more relaxed person, my job brings me stability and I'm understanding who I am daily. I'm slowly getting back to who I know I should be. The journey is hard, there are days and moments when I want to taste that drink so bad. I have my meetings which I attend regularly, I have some great friends who I can talk to. AA for me is a unity we are all bonded together by an addiction we fight daily to defeat. To anyone who thinks they have a problem don't be afraid to seek help. Don't be afraid to admit you may have a problem. It took me 10 years to admit mine. I'm a better man today because of it.
Seamus
We in Connect would like to express our sincere gratitude to Seamus for sharing his story with us and we hope it will go some way to helping others, if you need help please don’t be afraid to ask, Pieta House is featured this month and are only willing to help you, you are not alone.
Your Wedding,
YOUR WINE! A very important part of your wedding menu is when you have to decide which wine to serve to your guests. Traditionally every couple were offered a limited choice of wines by the hotel or wedding venue at their standard price or with a symbolic discount. But in recent years couples are paying more attention to their wine choice and they demand better quality and value in their wines, so they are asking us to bring their own chosen wine to the venue (where you might be charged just a small “corkage” fee) but by buying your own wine, you are availing of many advantages: • Saves money: Even taking into consideration the “corkage” fee by your venue, you will end up paying less for your wine (average savings of €500) • Personalised wine: Make your wine unique and original by personalising the label with a customised design, your names and wedding date, at no extra cost* • Hassle free: Once you have decided your favourite wine and label, we will take care of everything else and have it ready and delivered to the reception venue. • Massive range of choices: at Terra, you will be able to choose from a wide variety of wine varieties and styles and always guided by one of our team members that will be happy to assist you.
44 | Connect Kerry | September 2019
Here are also a few tips to keep on mind that will help you when choosing your wine: • Wine style: There are always a few safer choices like Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Merlot and Tempranillo that will please most of your guests because they are easier to drink with lower alcohol level, medium bodied and fruitier choices. Other varieties like Chardonnay, Shiraz, Malbec or Cabernet Sauvignon tend to be full bodied, oaky, spicy and higher in alcohol content and they won’t suit most of your guests at your party. • Seasonality: It is also important to consider the weather conditions as, generally speaking, summer months with warmer weather and sunny skies tend to consume more white wine than red as they will be a more refreshing and lighter choice. • Your guest’s “profile”: As an average, your guests will drink ¾ of a bottle per guest, but you need to keep on mind too of how many of them will be underage, non-drinkers or more of a Guinness drinker style guest. To be safe always go a bit higher than the average to ensure no one at your reception will be left unhappy. • Sparkling choice: for your cocktail reception or toast you have a wide selection of sparkling choices, from sparkling white wines and Prosecco to Cava or Champagne they all vary
in styles, quality and prices and they can be that extra touch to your special day. Beauty Tips By Romy Romy Birdthistle, makeup hoarder, beauty enthusiast and owner of Paradise Beauty Tralee. With over 13 years in the beauty industry. I'm here to share my best tips and tricks when it comes to beauty makeup and skincare.
How to get the look Makeup look that's right for you on your wedding day
Preparation is vital
Doing your research is so important for you wedding day look and your makeup will be such a big part of it! You should research looks that you like and have them ready for your makeup artist and I would highly recommend investing in some treatments for your skin such as microdermabrasion or mironeddling on the run up to your big day, invest in some new Skin care products too to have your best skin looking it's best! I especially love the Triology Skin care range, you can pick it up quite easily in CH Chemist or McCauleys Pharmacy. Drink plenty of water on the lead up also as this will keep your skin hydrated and looking fresh. Always do a makeup trial! Take a look at the makeup artists previous work and don't be afraid to try out a few different people. Every makeup artist has a different style so some may suit you and others may not. Bring along some photos for inspiration, pictures that you haves seen off other brides or picture of yourself when you have had makeup on that you really love will be so helpful for your makeup artist. Ask your makeup artist what brands they use as you want good quality products. My personal favorites for brides are MAC, estee Lauder, IT Cosmetics, Charlotte Tilbury, Chanel and NARS One of my personal favourites for foundation, esepecially for Brides and bridal parties is Chanel Vitalumier, it's lightweight and so glowy, I love the radiant finish it gives and it has great staying power too. Available in CH Chemist
Ask how long the makeup trial will be also, I always aim for about 2 hours with each bride as I want them to feel comfotable but I also want to get to know them and their style, It something neither you or your makeup artist should really want to rush. After your trial try to keep your makeup on for a couple of hours to see how you feel about it and to see how it lasts To Tan or not to tan?
Decide well in advance if you are going to wear fake tan or not and try to wear your chosen tan to your bridal trial so your makeup artist can match your foundation shade to it. I no longer use spray tan on our clients faces as I find it tend to sit in their pores and can look a little patchy depending on the clients skin type, I now use the SOSU woder water on clients faces The wonder water is specifically designed for the face and it gives such a beautiful snkissed glow. It's available in a lot of Pharmacies and also in Pennys If you are tanning your body then I always recommend that you tan your face also. It's so important for photography. Even if your makeup artist matches your foundation to your tan on your body if you don't have it on your face then this will cause flashback in your pictures and your face will look lighter than your body. Decide if you are going to do lash extnesions well in advance. If they aren't something that you usually wear you will need a bit of time to see if they're your style or what look you want to go for with them. Also make sure to ask your makeup artist if they have experience in applying make up with lash extensions as it can be tricky to achieve the look you want while lash extensions are on.
Start looking after your brows sooner rather than later! There are so many options nowadays when it comes to brows. Find a brow technician you are really happy with and stick with them. If your brows are sparse then a great option would be Henna brows which also stain the skin for a period of time. Or if you're fair like me then Phi Brows or microblading could be ideal, this is a much more permanent than an eyebrow tint but you will be left with a long lasting result.
Tips for your big day
Ensure that your makeup artist has used waterproof Mascara! It can be an emotional day and you want to be sure that if there are any tear (of joy obviously) that your makeup won't be destoyed by black streak marks Purchase your lipliner and lipstick for top ups throughout the day (and watch out for the dreaded lipstick on your teeth) so you can reapply throughout the day! I usually reccomend a rosy shade or a nide and my 2 favourites are Velvet teddy by MAC and Pillow Talk by Charlotte Tilbury The Pillow talk lip liner and lipstick is what I'll be wearing on my own wedding day and I find it suits the majority of skin tones. Get a look at the finished makeup in natural light, use a handheld mirror in front of a window or outside and make sure you're 100% happy with the finished look before your makeup artist finishes. My final tip is to wear a zip up top or a robe on the morning of the wedding, you would be surprised how many brides I've seen being cut out of tshirts as pulling them off over your head will ruin your hair and makeup
Wishing all you future brides a fabulous day! For more information email: makeupbyromyb@gmail.com 46 | Connect Kerry | September 2019

What’s trending for AW19 Connect | Lifestyle
Catherine’s Fashion Fix .... By Catherine Keane
Just as we’re enjoying those last few beach days Autumn has a way of sneaking up on us. Suddenly, the frantic search for a winter jacket or pair of boots leads to some regrettable last-minute purchases. All that can end now with a bit of forward planning and brushing up on the AW fashion trends coming your way for 2019. The runways had a little something in store for every style this season: the working woman, the risk-taker, and even those who’d prefer to stick to the classics. Here are some of the trends catching my attention this season! Suit up Shoulder pads, cinched waists, detailed tailoring, and classic textiles will define AW suiting. This look has been popular for the past few seasons and shows no signs of slowing down. From day to night, work to weekend brunch, a matching blazer-andtrouser outfit always looks sharp. The belted jacket makes up the new power suiting for AW19. The best part about this trend is that you don't need to invest. Simply buy a cute new belt and style it with what you already have in your wardrobe. The Cape If you're in need of a new coat next season, then you better make it a cape. The armless style was seen all over the catwalks and will likely be one of the must-have pieces of AW19. You will feel like a superhero in one of the strongest outerwear silhouettes to come out of the AW19 trends. The cape is having such a moment this season from military-inspired to downright dramatic and everything else in between. Capes are a fashion-forward alternative to a coat if you're seeking a touch more drama. Asymmetric necklines If you're on the fence about off-the-shoulder silhouettes, this asymmetric neckline is a nice compromise. The asymmetric neckline that bares a flash of shoulder is subtly sexy and has a more laidback approach than its 48 | Connect Kerry | September 2019
counterpart plus there is a nod to the 80’s trend which is coming to the forefront again this season. The Power Shoulder The '80s is a difficult decade to pull off but power shoulders are back with all the major fashion houses showcasing a wideshouldered, slim-waist silhouette. Runway looks included coat shoulders highlighted with extra ridges of fabric and suits with sleeves raised slightly above the shoulder. Will it turn out to be as big as it has been on the runway? Only time will tell. Rust – The colour of the Season Of course - rust in autumn is hardly breaking news. A mix of brown and orange, this colour is surprisingly easy to wear. Get ready to wrap up in the shade, whether it be in an oversized coat, a belted trench or embraced through heritage tartans. For vintage lovers this is a trend where pre-loved fashion also comes into play. No decade has loved the shade more than the '70s, so look for shops that specialise in the era and you'll quickly find your perfect rust piece. Romantic Florals Have florals ever been off-trend? We think not, but next season they're more extra than ever, with full floral. Florals were in full bloom across all the runways at fashion week conjuring up memories of Grandmother’s wallpaper print. You can opt for styles with a muted base colour with romantic florals splashed across for a feminine look. The trend will be everywhere this season from cherry infused dresses to magnificent rose skirts and is guaranteed to give your wardrobe a much welcome refreshing update. Feathering A trend that’s associated with glamour feathers have been an increasing fixation of the fashion world of late. If sequins aren't your thing, add a bit of jazz to your look with
playful feathering. Feathers were shown in various forms in the AW19 shows some extravagant and some more subtle. Pair a feathered coat over a slip dress for a chic look or go full-throttle with a feathered dress for drama but you will have to forget any concerns for a sleek silhouette and embrace the bulk. This trend spans from clothes to accessories and back again with the high street I’m sure adopting it big for the party season later in the season. Into the wild For quite a few seasons now, leopard spots have hogged the spotlight, but finally, for AW19, zebras will have their well-deserved moment. Designers have put a colourful spin on the classic monochrome look incorporating some colour making this look more striking. If an overall look is not your thing why not incorporate some zebra into your footwear or accessories keeping your look bang on trend for the season ahead. So there you have it. Start looking now and you will be ahead of the game come September!

Red Flags One of the red flags that I referred to last month is when you are in a relationship with a partner who withholds affection if you are not behaving in a way that suits him. This is very common, where people who are unable to ask for their needs to be met, or who find it difficult to express their emotions, will withdraw, perhaps going into a sulk or becoming cold and distant, and have to be “won around” or pacified. This is very controlling behaviour, and it can create real anxiety for the partner, who becomes frightened of displeasing the other person, “walking on eggshells” around him, restricting their own behaviour so as not to create disapproval. The opposite side of that coin is the partner who becomes very angry, also creating anxiety and fear. One can end up always placating, or giving in, so as to avoid provoking the anger. Typically in this scenario, one partner is blamed for “making” the other angry by their behaviour. This leads to a dynamic of domination and submission, where the dominating partner uses anger or withholding to control the behaviour of the other, and that is an enormous red flag. If you notice your relationship falling into this dynamic, if you are in any way fearful of your partner’s responses to your behaviour, look closely at the relationship. Either sort it out (you may need some help to do this) or consider whether you want to continue to be with somebody who creates that kind of fear in you.

PUTTING THE SPOTLIGHT ON MOUTH CANCER
Routine dental check-ups are about more than just the teeth. As part of your exam the dentist will also carry out an exam of the soft tissues as a basic mouth cancer screening. Mouth cancer is on the rise with more and more cases being diagnosed annually. There are currently 400 new cases diagnosed in Ireland every year. In the UK since 1970, there has been a 93% increase in the number of cases. Early detection is the key to a good outcome and your dentist is in an ideal position to identify any abnormal changes in the mouth. Traditionally, this type of cancer has been associated with older men, however, that is now beginning to change with more women and young people being diagnosed. Risk factors include smoking, chewing smokeless tobacco, drinking alcohol, over exposure to the sun (in the case of lip cancer), a diet low in fruit and vegetables, poor oral hygiene and exposure to HPV (Human Papilloma Virus). Signs and symptoms that your dentist will look out for include ulcers that do not heal, white or red patches inside the mouth, lumps, thickening of the cheek or tongue, difficulty chewing or moving the tongue, numbness, persistent sore throat or hoarseness or unexplained loose teeth. Often these symptoms can be due to other complaints but if they are present for more than 2 weeks it is important to get them checked out. We recommend people with complete upper and lower dentures come for a check-up at least annually and for everyone else six-monthly exams are best. Check out www.ltamc.org for more information or ask your dentist! Má bhíonn amhras ort, bain an t-amhras duit! When in doubt, get it checked out!

Hi Lovely readers! I for one have no idea where the year has gone, in Kerry everything is measured to either before or after the “The Festival”. Well that’s done for another year and what special one it was 60th anniversary. The start of September is very exciting in our particular shop as all the new accessories in the autumn/winter are arriving daily and as Paul does all the buying for That’s Perfect it is like opening “ A Parcel from America” when we were young. Paul has always done the buying and I can honestly say he is doing a superb job. This time of the year is hard to call as to what to wear it isn’t cold but it isn’t warm enough to go without some sort of outer wear .,this is where the trusted pashmina/shawl comes into its own. I find that if ones shoulder s are covered you can stay warm, how many of us growing up remember our moms saying “ I will need something to throw over my shoulders in case it gets cold”. Fact… If what you are wearing is a made up of block colours ie black top and a blue/mustard/red pants or skirt you could wear mustard/red/blue pashmina to pick up the colour of your bottom half. If on the other hand you if you only wear one colour you can wear a multi pashmina. At the moment we have lots of different types, shades and textures of scarves and shawls in stock and I have included some images. As I have said in earlier issues please please feel free to call in and ask us anything you need to know about matching jackets , coats, scarves or any accessory after all without our lovely customers I would only be sitting down inside counter drinking tea and checking my Facebook… Until next month Keep smiling and always be kind to each other

Music in the Kingdom by lisa curran
Brenda O'Connor is one of Kerry’s most well known busking artists and has proven her talents over and over again performing at some well renowned venues and festivals over Kerry. Here I got the chance to find out what makes her music journey worth it! Hey Brenda thanks for chatting with me! It’s been a pleasure to get to know you over the past year or so being part of all the events in tralee especially! So tell me, where do you get your musical ability? Is it in the family or is it something you were drawn to yourself? I think my family definitely influenced my interest in music. I’m the eighth child of nine kids and my house was always busy and alive with music. In our house there was always a guitar or keyboard around - some in working order - some not so much. Seeing my brothers and sisters learn to play music made it an important part of my life and our family dynamic. All my siblings are musical in some way but it’s my eldest sister Katie who showed me that music could be more than just a hobby. As a busker, Katie lives and breathes music. Seeing her life so imbued with music and getting to be a part of that has really encouraged me to pursue music with pride. How would you describe your music sound and vibe to those who have not heard you yet! I love country music and would be inspired by artists like Brad Paisley and Miranda Lambert. I also listen to a lot of indie and folk music for example, Hudson Taylor and The Lumineers. I play acoustic guitar so it can be difficult to find a unique sound and vibe
so I do find myself jumping from genre to genre and trying to play music from different eras to keep myself and audiences entertained. I also perform with my sister, Isobel who harmonises and adds a certain sweetness and unique twist to our sound. We both love Taylor Swift too so that adds some country pop to our music. Overall, I would say my sound and vibe is quite “chill”. How has being involved in local festivals and events helped your music journey? I feel so lucky to be a tralee busker because the local festivals like the Food Festival and the Rose of Tralee offer such an amazing platform for music. I think being involved in these festivals and events gives buskers a chance to perform with the support of the council as well as from the public. Busking at these festivals is a wonderful way to connect with locals and other musicians. I have become involved in groups of buskers which has opened the door to new opportunities. This has all helped in allowing me to do what I love in pursuing music. Is there a goal you’re working towards music wise? College? Recording an ep etc? I think for the most part I’m just seeing where music
takes me. I finished my leaving cert exams in June and since have moved to Galway where I busk and pay bills - which is new and a bit daunting - but having the ability to pay those bills and support myself solely on my music is exciting. I am taking a year out to pursue music so I’m hoping to busk, travel and record. If I’m honest, I don’t know if this is what I want to do with my life. I love music and right now I love what I’m doing but who can say what the future holds. I have been looking at applications for The Voice - but we can talk about that later! Who are your biggest influences from the past and present? This is difficult because so many people come to mind. As I mentioned previously, of course, my sister Katie is an amazing influence. She is not only an exceptional performer but a beautiful songwriter. Her encouragement and support is the reason I get to do what I do today! My sister Isobel is also a big influence in my music as we perform together so my musical journey is very much intertwined with hers! I think it’s fair to say Taylor Swift is a big reason why I picked up the guitar in the first place and to this day I still play and listen to her music. My family really influences my music too. As there’s so many of us, I am introduced to lots of different styles and this is reflected in my set list - Johnny Cash to Peter Gabriel to Adele. If you could give any fellow young artists advice on how to get out there what would you say? I would say busking is a great way to get out there and anyone can do it! I would say to do your absolute best - practice and know your set list. Also, don’t worry about what’s going on around you your music is your music - if some people don’t like it that’s okay, it's not for them it’s for those who do. If you’re nervous to jump out on the street or if you want to build a sort of portfolio I think Instagram is a great place to post covers and get feedback. I also think it’s a good idea to record your music and listen back to it to get an idea of what’s good and what needs improvement - I do this all the time and I know it seems strange but after a while you get used to it and it does help! Other than that - surround yourself with honest people who love and support you! Where can we check out your music and where are you performing in the next few weeks? You can find my music and updates on Instagram @ thebrendajean, Facebook: Brenda Jean Music and SoundCloud: Brenda Jean. Thank you so much for taking the time Brenda! Can’t wait to hear you again soon! SNAPCHAT: lizzieraisin INSTGRAM: lizzieraisin

INCOME TAX RETURNS BY: John Canty
As summer ends the Income Tax deadline come into focus for many businesses. The process of gathering information together for their tax return and scraping together any money they can to pay their tax bill is often very stressful. The deadline is fast approaching so don’t leave it too late. INCOME TAX 2018 It is much better to get an accurate calculation of your tax liability early rather than guessing and getting a nasty surprise. Cash flow constraints often mean the full tax or preliminary tax liability cannot be paid. Where payment difficulties exist make a structured plan to deal with it. NB: Don’t file your return late and ignore letters requesting payment. This will usually cost you more and cause a lot more stress. PRELIMINARY TAX FOR 2019 Preliminary Tax also becomes due on the 31st October. This is normally calculated based on 100% of the 2018 Tax liability. It can also be based on 90% of the liability for 2019 provided an accurate calculation can be made. LATE FILING The deadline is the 31st October unless you are using ROS. There is an immediate 5% Penalty for failure to file your income

tax return on time. This increases to 10% if your return is filed later than 2 months. In addition interest for late payment may also be charged by the Revenue. REVENUE ON LINE (ROS) As is the norm now there is an extension until 12th November for anyone who is paying and filing online using ROS. NB: Extension only applies if full payment is made online when filing return.
