In the meantime get that shopping finished, shop local and keep our county moving, I would as always ask you all this year to make the effort to support our local shops instead of scrolling through online shopping, and don’t forget to say thank you to all our wonderful retailers and their staff who always do their best to look after us in our daily shopping trips. There is no extra charge for being nice!!! Christmas is not for everyone so spare a thought for those around you that may be alone or not getting the Christmas spirit as you are. Visit your elderly relatives and take some time out to sit and chat, it doesn’t have to be all about the biggest present under the tree it’s who is around the tree that matters most… we have all lost loved ones since this time last year, remember time is precious so share it with family this season and say a silent prayer for those not with us to celebrate the festive occasion that is Christmas. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to connecting you with the county in 2019 Merry Christmas from all the team here at Connect.

Lucy Kennedy By Marisa Reidy SHE’S funny, she’s beautiful and she has a blistering TV and radio career – but best of all, TV star Lucy Kennedy is genuinely one of the loveliest ladies in showbiz. Always up for a laugh, she tells Connect about her crazy route to a career in front of the camera – which came about somewhat by accident while working in radio sales. “When it came to my career, I honestly changed my mind on a daily basis in school. My poor careers guidance teacher must have been the most patient lady in Europe. I flitted between wanting to be a pilot and journalist for about four years and then ended up not pursuing either,” Lucy explained “At the age of 22, I completed a television presenting and production course with Bill Keating and worked behind the scenes in production, happily, for seven years. Then when a dating show host opportunity came up, I said ‘why not’? And shockingly, I got the gig. My friend Maia Dunphy called me and said that she’d heard about a dating show host audition with Adare Productions. I was working with Spin 1038 at that time, doing radio sales and literally went to the audition after work, for the craic. No one was more shocked than me when I got the job. That show was called ‘The Ex-Files’ for RTE and I loved it.” From there, Lucy went on to host the original Podge & Rodge Show – a project she thoroughly enjoyed and which still holds a special place in her heart. “Myself and the boys auditioned together and within seconds I think it was obvious that we were meant to be,” Lucy tells CONNECT. “I worked on the show for nearly three years and then the decision came up to continue with them for another series or to go out on my own. I mulled over it for a few weeks and decided 4 | Connect Kerry | December 2018
- having had a good cry - to go out on my own with ‘Living With Lucy’. I always have and always will adore the boys and I’m a viewer for life - they never fail to make me laugh.” Although the decision to pursue ‘Living With Lucy’ was a hugely difficult one, Lucy says she has absolutely no regrets – describing the show as ‘her baby’. She said she is hugely invested in the show and loves the concept of living with celebrities and learning more about them. “I love the show, I really do - it’s my baby and I’ve looked after it adoringly for nearly 10 years. I never get bored or tired of the format because there’s so much variety living with celebrities. That show is a part of me now and it’s as me as I’ll ever be. I think that ‘Living with Lucy’ can last forever,” she said. The show, Lucy explained, sees her move in with a chosen celebrity for two nights and three days, which she jokes can either fly by or drag, depending on the guest. One person she could have lived with indefinitely, however, was our very own Michael Healy Rae. “I have to say my favourite housemate was Micheal Healy Rae – and he knows it. I laughed solidly for three days and his family were so welcoming and great fun. Since then, we’ve become friends and I honestly just love him. He’s so hardworking, so kind and such fun. I really love being in his company,” Lucy explained. “I didn’t know him prior to moving in so I didn’t know what to expect to be honest, but what I hadn’t expected was how much I’d genuinely like him. We just clicked. By the way, he gets up at about 3am which is not normal. I think he’s a vampire.” Lucy also revealed that she is currently working on an idea that involves she and Micheal getting together again, joking that she thinks they could be the new Ant and Dec. So

remember you heard it here first!! When not living it up with famous celebrities in Ireland and the UK, Lucy is also the presenter of Ireland’s Got Talent on Virgin Media One – season two of which is due to begin filming soon. Lucy says she absolutely loves being at the forefront of such a great show and is always impressed by the talent on display. “I really, really enjoy presenting ‘Ireland’s Got Talent’. It’s right up my street - family fun at its very best,” Lucy said. “And I’m so impressed with our talent. For a small island, we can certainly match other countries. I’d like to see more comedians this year though - comedians and bands.” Of course Lucy’s talent is not confined to TV – she is also co-presenter of the Lucy and Colm Breakfast show on Radio Nova, which she presents with her close friend Colm Hayes. “Colm and I met eight years ago when Gerry Ryan sadly passed away as we filled in on Gerry’s show on 2fm. I then went back to telly and he moved to another slot on 2fm. We obviously stayed in touch over the years and had many great boozy lunches,” Lucy joked. “Then, last November, he asked me to meet and asked me how I’d feel about hosting a breakfast show together - and I said yes. I’ve been offered lots of radio work over the last few years but the timing was never right. I absolute love it and I love Colm dearly. Nova has big plans so I’m delighted to be a part of such a successful, exciting company” While currently living the dream with a highly successful media career, Lucy’s number one priority, and indeed her greatest achievement - is her family. She is mum to three small children, aged 9, 6 and 2 – so being there for them will always be top of her agenda, she says. “The most rewarding thing about being a mum is when you see your child laughing. You know that they’re happy and secure. I am very protective 6 | Connect Kerry | December 2018
of our children, we both are, and so I worry a lot about them, like all parents,” she said, “The most challenging thing has to be dividing myself between them. Because they are at different ages and stages, sometimes I feel like I’m being stretched in all directions. That said, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Our three babies and our family are my favourite thing about my life. They really are my world.” Asked if she finds it difficult to juggle family life and such a demanding career, Lucy says it’s all about planning. “I am so organised that I can tell you what they’re having for dinner on the 3rd of December,” she jokes. “You have to be ten steps ahead. I’m a natural planner and I love making lists, so that helps. I’m also very lucky though. I work part time hours so I’m at the school gates every day to collect them all and I don’t work on a Friday, unless I’m filming. It’s taken me a long time to get it right but I’ve finally found the perfect balance for us. I’ve always made sure that I chose the job that worked around my family. Family first, always.” And speaking of family, and Christmas just around the corner, Lucy says there is a huge buzz of excitement in her house this year. While she and her husband will be hosting Christmas dinner, she admits she will be getting a little help from her mum. “I am obsessed with Christmas. I get excited as soon as Halloween ends - we all do, we’re a very festive house. It certainly adds that extra level of excitement when you have small children at home. Holly (6) has had her Santa wish-list ready since June,” Lucy told Connect. “We take it in turns to host Christmas, so this year, myself and Richard are hosting Christmas Day. There will be twelve of us in total; seven adults and five children. It will be very loud and very good fun. We’re a very close family so there’ll be plenty of slagging and laughing. My mum is making the turkey and the gravy as I’m useless at both and then I’ll do all the veg, roasties, desserts, cheeseboard etc. Booze-wise, I stock up each month, so at the moment I could open up a small pub in our back garden.” Asked, finally, if she would ever consider a TV role reversal, where she became the focus of a reality TV show like Dancing with The Stars or Big Brother-type series, Lucy was adamant that it’s never going to happen.... “Absolutely no way. I wouldn’t like it. I have a private side of me and our lives that’s only for me. But more importantly, no one - and I mean no one - ever needs to see me in Lycra.”

The story of Ballygarry House begins when it opened its doors as a 16 bedroom hotel called the Manhattan Hotel in November 1958. Who would have known that it was to become one of Kerry’s leading hotels - a hotel that would touch the lives of generations of Kerry people during its 60 year history.
lovely memories of our wedding day back in June 1959. The best advice that Jeremiah can give is (don’t drink or smoke) & Love is the foundation of marriage, be good to each other!!
As this year marks the milestone of the hotels 60th Anniversary, we have a very special story about one family’s tradition to get married at Ballygarry House. The Manhattan hotel was only opened 6 months when the management and team were preparing for a special wedding ceremony of Marie (Murphy) Moriarty & Jeremiah (Jerry) Moriarty on the 2nd June 1959.
Jeremiah & Marie met at The Gaelic League Irish dancing event in the Manhattan which was newly opened and was establishing itself as a well-known venues for local dances and socials. Jeremiah recalls how he proposed and on Marie’s lunch break from Woolworths, we went across the road to Hilsers Jewellers, Denny Street to pick out the ring. Jeremiah tells the reason why they chose the Manhattan was that they had attended the Boot factory socials there and liked the décor and maple sprung dance floor. One of the special memories from their wedding day was the drive over to the Manhattan Hotel and arriving to the hotel reception. Jeremiah recalls another fond memories of the wedding day, was when his grandparents arrived into the function room for the meal. Jeremiah said that Catriona & Frank’s wedding day in September brought back 14 | Connect Kerry | December 2018
One of most memorable moments was having all my family and friends together in the one room celebrating our special day. Catriona’s most memorable moment was our first dance and very lively and it set the tone for the rest of the night. They booked Spalpin for the drinks reception in The Pavilion and they got all our guests in great spirits. The staff at Ballygarry welcoming us into the Ballroom it was very heart-warming experience and we felt like royalty.

memorable experience, walking through the same doors that my grandparents and my parents walked through meant everything to us.
Catriona & Frank said they would love to get married all over again and we are looking forward to celebrating the 4th Generations wedding at Ballygarry in the future.
The second love story continues the family tradition on the 27th of February 1982 when Catherine (Moriarty) Walsh & Patrick Walsh were the second generation to create magical memories at Ballygarry House. Catherine & Patrick met at a disco in Count down, Bridge Street Tralee. Patrick went to Cork to pick up the ring and he proposed on my birthday after asking my father’s permission. The reason they chose Ballygarry was Catherine’s parents held their reception in the Manhattan and they spoke very highly of the venue and wanted to follow in their footsteps. Special moments from the day was it was magical, the hotel and especially the ballroom looked fabulous and the staff were so courteous. Owen McGillicuddy (Padraig’s Father) made us feel very special and proud. The best advice that they can offer is honesty and respect for each other and plenty of love and laughter. When Catriona Walsh & Frank Ryall got engaged they knew there was only one venue for their wedding, it had to be Ballygarry House. On the 22nd September 2018, a magical

Nurse Cara Buckley
Returns from Jamaica I'm back from one of the most inspirational trips of my life. I have visited children who have been adandoned by their parents and left on streets and slums in Jamaica. These children have been rescued and given a second chance at life by an incredible charity called the Mustard Seed. When I made my visit to one of the care homes, I gravitated towards a baby boy who I believed to be around 2 years old. He loved being held and soon fell asleep in my arms with a grin on his face. One of the nurses told me that this "little boy "was 9 years old! I just cried and began to question if there really was a God. Each day I visited different care homes and performed different tasks, such as helping feed disabled children, massaging some of the children who had contractions, painting houses, organising a concert, playing a football match with bare footed teenagers and teaching young mothers how to cook. I had the privilege of listening to their personal stories and hearing about their aspirations of a better future.
I was amazed by the extreme hard work that the nurses and health care asssitants carried out each day with caring for a vast amount of children with disabilities and challanging behaviour. They were so dedicated to the care of each child to a point where 20 | Connect Kerry | December 2018
they were more like family than their carers. The children called me "auntie" and welcomed me into their Mustard Seed family with the most heartfelt and meaningful cuddles that I have ever felt in my life. It was truely moving. By the end of my trip, I reflected on the childrens happiness and constant inclusion of spontaneous prayers throughout the day. I realised that without their belief in God, they would have no light in their hearts and no dreams of a better future. So not only did I see the importance of God in their lives, I saw no sad faces. I saw how they appreciated what little possessions they had and most of all I saw no greed, no jeaously, no fighting and no bullying. I saw unselfish children who looked out for each other, they shared their love of life and their contagious smiles. I returned home with a different view of life. After living in a compound for a week, I have never felt as free in my life since returing back from Jamaica. I have so much apprecation for what I have, and I have learnt that what you have, you should share with others. Be it, your time, your talent, your money or a place in your home. "For it is in giving that we shall recieve". These children have been abandoned once and no child should be abandoned twice. I will definitely go back to Jamaica and bring my children with me so they can see the world how I see it now. Thanks to everyone who donated so generously especially the Bon Secouors Hospital Tralee.

The Child with
Chronic Headaches Defined as headache occurring for more than 15 days a month for at least three months. Prevalence: About 1% of teenagers and it increases to about 4% in adults. There are two challenges regarding chronic headaches: (1) To rule out serious cause. (2) To outline a robust strategy to cope with the distressing symptoms. (3) Thus, reducing consequences such as decreased quality of life, school refusal, poor sleep and anxiety and depression which is common among sufferers. The most common type of headaches in children are migraine and tension type headaches. Headaches become chronic when the existing episodic primary headache increases in frequency over time so that the headache becomes continuous, called headache transformation. Headaches may change from migraine or tension type and may have features of both or may become vague in description.
(12) Difficulty swallowing (13) Changes in foot or hand preferences e.g. if they were right handed and changed to using their left hand All these warrant assessment. Assessment of impact of the headache: (1) Absenteeism (2) Parental time off work (3) Miss recreational opportunities (4) Impact on relationships (5) Effect on mental health which is common (6) Effect on sleep Serious causes have to be out ruled by the family doctor and may be referred if he/she deems it necessary. Less serious causes can be teeth grinding, other jaw joint problems and sinusitis or ENT problems. Assessment of trigger factors:
Painkillers for headaches and standard migraine treatments used for more than three days a week for more than a few weeks, this can cause medication overuse headaches.
(1) Analgesic overuse. (2) Psychiatric conditions, anxiety/depression. (3) Missing meals. (4) Caffeine or alcohol. (5) Poor hydration. (6) Stress
Red Flags:
Treatment:
(1) Persistent headaches in a child less than four years is very unusual and warrants investigation. (2) Persistent headaches that awake from sleep or on waking. (3) Confusion, disorientation with the headache. (4) Personality change or deterioration in academic performance. (5) Seizures in association with headache (6) Change in character of the headache. (7) Headache with persistent nausea and vomiting. (8) Persistent visual abnormalities such as a squint and eye sight changes (9) Head tilt (10) Change in motor skills such as becoming clumsy or deterioration in hand writing. (11) Focal or local weakness in an arm or a leg.
(1) Try to avoid standard migraine and headache analgesia particularly if analgesia overuse is a factor. (2) Anti-Depressants are often effective even if there is not a depressive element to the headache (3) If one has to use analgesics, one should be careful and limit their use. (4) Drugs such as Clonidine and Inderal which are not likely to cause headache overuse problems may be helpful. (5) Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or other psychological therapies. (6) Lastly, a lifestyle change.
Medication overuse headaches must not be missed:

The Goose Prepare the stuffing first, Allow at least 1lb (450g) uncooked weight per diner. Assuming the goose is already gutted, you just need to wash and dry it and cut away any excess fat around the neck cavity. Prick the skin all over and rub it with lemon and seasoning. Season the main cavity with salt and freshly ground pepper and fill it with the cooled stuffing. Place the goose in a roasting tin and roast in a very hot oven 240C for ten minutes. Reduce the heat to 180C, and cook for 2-21/2 hours but remove the bird from the oven three of four times to pour off excess fat. (Keep the fat for the roasties)If you don't do this, your goose will taste very greasy. To test whether cooked, prick the bird at the thickest part. When the juices run clear, Christmas dinner's centrepiece is ready.
Apple & Potato Stuffing, for a 10lb (4.5kg) goose: 2lb (900g) potatoes 1lb (450g) cooking apples, peeled and chopped 1lb (450g) roughly chopped onions 2oz (55g) butter 1tbs chopped parsley 1tbs chopped lemon balm salt and pepper.
Method: Boil the potatoes in salted water. When cooked, mash without using milk or butter. Melt the butter into a pan and, over a low heat, fry the onions for five minutes without allowing them to brown. Add the apples and cook until they are softened. Stir in the mashed potatoes, parsley and balm. Season. Allow to cool before stuffing the goose.

Perfect Brussel Sprouts Serves 6 1 kg Brussels sprouts, trimmed and outer leaves removed 100 g smoked streaky bacon, chopped, or lardons 50 g walnuts 1 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1. Put the sprouts in a large pan of boiling water, bring back to the boil and boil for 3 minutes. Drain and immediately place in a bowl of iced water – this will stop them cooking any further and help retain their lovely green colour. 2. Finely slice the bacon and chop the walnuts. Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the bacon pieces for about 5 minutes until crisp and golden – use a slotted spoon to scoop them out, leaving any residual fat in the pan. Toss in the chopped walnuts and fry for 1-2 minutes until starting to colour. Return the bacon to the pan. Drain the sprouts and tip them into the pan. Sauté together for a further 3-4 minutes, adding a generous dash of balsamic vinegar just towards the end.

Add the egg yolk, vanilla and salt, scrape down the side of the bowl and beat at low speed until smooth. Gradually add the flour, beating until the dough just forms a ball. Pat the dough into a disk and cover with plastic wrap. Refrigerate the dough for at least 1 hour or overnight. Step 2 Make the tart shell Roll out the dough between 2 sheets of parchment paper into a 12-inch round. Carefully peel off the top layer of parchment paper and invert the dough onto a 9-inch fluted tart pan with a removable bottom. Peel off the parchment paper and gently press the dough into the pan. Trim the dough flush with the rim. Patch any cracks with the dough trimmings. Lightly prick the bottom with a fork.
Refrigerate the tart shell until firm, about 30 minutes, or freeze for 10 minutes. Step 3 Make the tart shell Preheat the oven to 165c. Line the tart shell with foil and fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake the tart shell for about 30 minutes, until the rim is lightly golden. Remove the foil and weights and bake the tart shell for about 5 minutes longer, until it is lightly golden all over. Set the tart pan on a baking sheet. Increase the oven temperature to 180c. Step 4 meanwhile, make the filling In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar with the water and cook over moderately high heat, stirring, until the sugar dissolves. Add the cranberries, cover and cook over moderate heat for 3 minutes, stirring once or twice. Remove the pan from the heat and let the cranberries cool to room temperature. Drain the cranberries well; reserve the cranberry syrup. Step 5 meanwhile, make the filling In a medium bowl, beat the eggs with the brown sugar and flour. Whisk in the milk and the almond extract. Spread the cranberries in the tart shell. Drizzle 1 tablespoon of the reserved cranberry syrup over the cranberries, then pour in the almond custard. Step 6 meanwhile, make the filling Bake the tart in the lower third of the oven until a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean, 16 to 18 minutes. Transfer the tart in the pan to a rack to cool completely, at least 2 hours. Dust the tart with confectioners’ sugar. Cut the tart into wedges and serve with whipped cream.

Another progressive move by hotiliers and eateries we are seeing is that they are now supporting our members to eat out and to stay on track.... and are very accommodating be brave and don't afraid to ask for sauces on the side, and to swap butter laced veg and potatoes for salads. Some restaurants are offering items such as baked potatoes which can be topped with filling and vibrant choices. It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the year after all Now is the time for glitz and spangle, for glitter and glimmer. Fancy footwear, sparkling arm candy or jewellery gems – whatever accessory you pick for party season why not bling yourself out! Our diaries are filling up with events and the Christmas spirit is definitely catching on. The outfits are finally sorted and now you need to accessorize. Where to start! The little black dress a timeless favourite for any classy social occasion will never go out of fashion. It also provides the perfect understated backdrop to showcase a little sparkle.
Zara - Statement necklace €15.95
Think glitz and glamour, with diamonds for a contemporary twinkle, or if your Christmas budget can't stretch to the real deal, many of the high streets shops are doing super sparkly crystal earrings. Bold and chunky statement necklaces also have the wow factor and are a sure fire way to add some bling to your party dress. However if bling is not your thing, understated jewellery can also make a strong style statement. Animal prints are a great way to add some sass. Throw on a leopard print fur jacket. If this is too much, try some animal print earrings or bracelets. Nude coloured accessories can also pair exceptionally well with the little black dress especially if you want to be more understated. When you're wearing a sequin dress, all eyes are sure to be on you. That makes choosing the right accessories and accompanying pieces even more important and difficult than with a more subtle outfit. Since sequins are so bold and eyecatching, you should allow the dress to stand on its own by keeping the rest of your look more low-key. Instead, keep your look simple and understated. Don’t pair your dress with a clutch and shoes in matching sequins or rhinestones and avoid large, heavy jewellery. Delicate stud earrings are a better match with a sequin dress than a dramatic chandelier style. If your dress is strapless or features a scoop or V-neck, a simple pendant necklace with a thin chain works well.
New Look - Leopard Faux Fur €49.95
River island Leopard print earrings €10
River island - Court shoes €80
When it comes to choosing shoes and a bag to pair with your sequin dress, choosing materials with a similar

shine to the sequins can make you look overdone. You might wear your sequin dress with black Catherine’s Fashion Fix suede shoes and a By Catherine Keane matching clutch. If the sequins are a neutral colour like black or silver, you can also play with colour. If a velvet dress or a two-piece suit is your choice for the festive season let the velvet be the star of your look. You don’t need to worry too much about accessorizing a velvet outfit, because the fabric is a wow piece in itself. Just toss on a pair of plain shoes, grab a simple clutch, and maybe add on something like a simple piece of jewellery to add a little something extra.
Carrig Donn - Gold Pendant €18
You can also accessorize with velvet. Velvet chokers have been in for a while, and now is the perfect time. You could also try a luxe velvet scarf or shrug if you are looking for ways to keep warm. Littlewoods - Velvet bag €40
One of the best velvet fashion accessories you’ll be able to find right now is a handbag. You will be able to find your dream bag in no time if you browse around your favourite high street stores. It’s a super easy way to add in some luxurious velvet to your looks, and you’ll find just how easily velvet can transform a look. Remember don’t over accessorize. Balance your accessorizes well and have fun. Less can be more as you don’t want to end up looking trashy, not classy. So, let’s get this party started!

Hi Lovely Readers, Has the madness reached ye yet, I am sure if every other year is anything to go by it is in full swing, I must admit the magic of Christmas has dimmed a little for me since some very special people in my life have gone to heaven but when I see the faces of the girls and boys that call into the shop after a visit to Santa it's a wonderful treat. As the year draws to an end I would like to slightly change my piece this month and take the opportunity to say a heartfelt thanks to our very very special customers who continually call to us and who tell their friends who in turn call to us. We are an independent accessory shop and have lots of competion from the larger shops and from online sales but those amazing customers that have become friends have once again made us their first port of call and for this we are so grateful. We changed the interior of the shop during the year and the comments we received were so encouraging and it makes all the late nights and broken finger nails worth it. We also tried short videos on our Facebook page and the response was way beyond our expectations so again for this we say "Thank you". Then finally in October we had our window broken and the kind comments and response to our dilemma was once again heartwarming, I suppose what I am trying to say in a very round about way is we would be nothing without our very loyal and incredibly lovely customers so on behalf of Paul, Mary and myself we want to say thank you and to wish ye all the very best for Christmas and for 2019. Now that the important message is said let me remind ye if you are stuck for last minute gifts for a favourite teacher, godmother or super Aunt call in and we will get you sorted Boxed Brooches at €15, necklace and earring sets in beautiful Velvet boxes €10 and lots and lots of Scarves ranging in price fro €6.00 to € 30.00. I will sign off now and look forward to joining ye again in February 2019! Keep smiling
Carmel xx

When we fly on an aeroplane, we sit through the safety announcements given by the flight attendants. Most of it relates to fastening our seatbelts, being aware of the emergency exits and operating our lifejackets in case the plane crash lands in water. But there is one piece of advice that is slipped in quietly, and it is a piece of advice that translates really well into just about every other situation in our lives, and we would do well to remember it. In the event of loss of pressure in the cabin, oxygen masks will drop down in front of you. The advice is “always fit your own mask first before attending to anybody else”. This advice is given on the basis that you can’t actually help anybody else if you yourself are unconscious, and it is an excellent metaphor for how we look after ourselves emotionally and psychologically. If we put everybody else’s needs before ours, we will be in no fit state to look after ourselves, let alone anybody else. I have to stress that this is not a policy of selfishness or putting ourselves before everybody else, but we should try to ensure that our own needs are met and that we are doing what we need to do to remain healthy. This is because nobody else can do this for us. As adults, we have to take charge of meeting our own needs because it is nobody else’s responsibility. Staying well ourselves is the best way to help others around us.

This is the ninth successive year that DSI has been the main beneficiary of the popular charity cycle. Cyclists also had the option to select their own beneficiary and raise funds and awareness for it. The incredible sum raised was announced, and a cheque presented to DSI and individual beneficiaries at a special celebratory event attended by cyclists, branch members, and their families at Clayton Hotel Silver Springs in Cork on Saturday, December 1st. This year’s charity cycle saw over 120 amateur cyclists travel over 600km through the six counties of Munster from August 9th – 12th, supported by friends, family and the many volunteers who fundraised along the route. Each cyclist covered their own expenses, so all funds raised go directly to DSI and the individual beneficiaries. Sean Kelly, a dedicated supporter of Tour de Munster, once again took to the roads of Munster with the group for the full four days of the Tour, covering an average of 150 km per day through the beautiful towns and villages of Cork, Waterford, Tipperary, Limerick, Clare, Kerry. The funds raised for the Munster branches off DSI will be shared among their six branches to fund services for people with Down Syndrome. Phil Keohane, Tour de Munster Branch Liaison Officer and cycle participant thanked all those who supported this year’s tour, “I’d like to thank all involved for their incredible dedication and hard work, their tremendous fundraising work and awareness campaign improves the lives of so many Munster families, and this is what makes Tour de Munster so special.

TOOTH WHITENING BY: DR SUSAN CREAN BDS(NUI)MFD RCSI
What is tooth whitening? Teeth whitening is a somewhat controversial topic, with lots of products being made available over the internet leading to misinformation about whitening from the famous charcoal Tooth whitening, to DIY whitening strips, at home laser whitening, and finally professional dental tooth whitening However, if applied appropriately it can be an effective way of lightening the colour of your tooth without removing tooth structure .It should be undertaken by a trained dental professional.
What does it involve? Professional tooth whitening is usually undertaken with a dentist.Your dentist will assess you and check if you are suitable for treatment. If you have cavities in your mouth, these will need to be treated first, as the whitening gel could irritate the nerve in the tooth if it is exposed. All plaque and tartar need to be removed first. All superificial stains should be removed through polishing the teeth, prior to tooth whitening. The active ingredient is usually hydrogen peroxide or caramide peroxide. As the active ingredient is broken down, oxygen is released into the tooth, and this gradually whitens the tooth. Dentists usually take before and after shades to compare the colour change. The dentist will usually take moulds of your teeth (impressions) and fabricate custom made whitening trays. It is important that the trays are specifically made for you and adapt to the shape of your teeth. If the tray is ill fitting , the gel can leak out of the tray and onto you gums and damage them !The trays are usually worn for 1-2 hours per day over a 2 week period. However, the instructions will vary depending on the product used.
How safe is it?
Don’t forget Brush n Blush do the full package to make you look beautiful Now offering a rage of treatments including: Makeup, Spray Tanning, Eye Lash Extensions, Waxing, Billion Dollar Brows and Facials you are guaranteed to look amazing for that Christmas party Or treat someone you love to an amazing facial Call to the team today and choose for yourself‌
If used appropriately the product is very safe. However, it is important to be assessed prior to treatment by a dentist. In Europe tooth whitening can only be legally undertaken by a dentist. It is illegal to sell bleaching material which contains more than .1% peroxide or its equivalent carbamide peroxide to any individual other than a dentist. These regulations are in place to protect the public and in Ireland are enforced by the Irish dental Council. It ensures that the person undertaking the procedure is adequately trained preventing risk to teeth and gums.
Where is the service available? If you are looking to have your teeth whitened in time for Christmas you need to start making an appointment with your dentist now! At Mac Domhnaill dental , Tralee Co.Kerry you will receive a complimentary tooth cleaning with each of our dentists Dr Susan Crean or Dr Marcas Mac Domhnaill. Please contact us on (066)7121457 or www.macdomhnailldental.ie or fiacloir@gmail.com.

Music in the Kingdom CHRISTIE HENNESSY CELEBRATION WEEKEND
The Christie Hennessy celebration of music and songwriters was an absolute roaring success this year. After a rocky journey the past year as to whether it was going to go ahead or not and even a question of moving it out to Killarney the event proved it is wanted, needed and indeed needs to stay right where it is.
The Friday Night Troubadour gig was a night that was full of all types of music, styles and characters. Huge talent was shown on the stage, the night was kicked off by Pam and Joe O Connor from Tralee with their tribute to Christie, next up was Mr.Patrick Pearse with eclectic mix of trad and country, Luke Clerkin from Dublin sang a fabulous song highlighting mental health, ‘Chapter 2’ a Tralee band blew everyone away with their showmanship and catchy songs with such high energy it was unimaginable that they are not full time performers, Kieran Kelly of Dublin city Fm was brought on stage by the master that is Francie Conway for an impromptu performance, next up was Karrie with her haunting melodies and soulful lyrics. Mr. Pete Holidai of the band ‘trouble pilgrims’ caught all of our attention with his witty song introductions and amazing vocals, Susan O Neill absolutely blew me away with her vocals and use of loop pedal even using her army band training and adding brass instruments into her loops

live on stage, Liam O Connor was as usual the showman he always is joined on stage by his son on percussion and daughter on keys but the highlight of the night was most definitely the return of ‘The Righteous Dudes’ their set had the room on its feet and it was an absolute experience to watch the local talent we have so alive on the stage. The Saturday was filled with workshops during the day. I had the pleasure of giving a workshop on Vocal technique and science and it was an absolute joy to have so many attend and soak up all the information, this was followed by a music industry workshop from Pete Holidai whose experience and expertise as well as stories of his music journey was mesmerizing to hear. The IMRO ireland songwriters competition was the Saturday evening and it was a unanimous decision in the judging room that we all were blown away by Gemma Bradley with her song ‘Beserk’ her energy, talent and huge personality shone through from the minute she walked on stage and her song is beautifully written and harmonized with lyrics anyone can relate to. Looking ahead to next year I hope that it continues to be current and in its hometown, it was an absolute joy to be surrounded by artists that are in the business only recently and also the veterans in the one room, not something we get the pleasure of having in Kerry very often and something that is so badly needed to feed the minds in music education.
MUSIC IN THE MALL IN THE RUN UP TO XMAS
This December keep an eye out in The Mall as there is music on everyday in the marquee, We have amazing acts lined up from Samba Cuisle to traditional music groups, magicians, school choirs, vocalists, string quartets and so much more, Im hoping the streets will be alive with music and everyone can take a second to appreciate local talent whilst doing their Xmas shopping. All these groups will be providing entertainment for FREE so if you are passing at any point be sure to give them a smile and throw in a few cent.

SEASONAL CONTRACTS As we approach Christmas, many companies are looking at additional staff to cover this busy period. Seasonal staff hired for Christmas should be employed under a Fixed Term Contract of Employment. It’s important to note that Under the Protection of Employees (Fixed Term Work) Act 2003, employees on a Fixed Term contract must be treated in the same manner as permanent staff members including their entitlements to annual leave (holidays), public holidays, minimum wage and wage slips. A Fixed Term contract should state the end date of the employment. Prior to this end date the employer must meet with the employee and confirm that the Fixed Term contract is coming to an end. A letter should then be issued in advance of the finish to confirm the finish date, allowing to the relevant notice in line with the Minimum Notice and Terms of Employment Acts 1973 – 2005. Even though this is a temporary contract, it should still include a probationary period and should allow for this period to be extended. A Fixed Term contract is legally binding therefore if a contract finishes for any other reason that the contract was issued then this is an unfair termination which may lead to a case of unfair dismissal. If you require further information or advice on the above, please do not hesitate to contact us on (066)7102887.
What is PAYE Modernisation? From the 1st January the Revenue is introducing a new system for operation of payroll. The new system should in theory make it easier to deduct and pay the right amount of taxes for both employees and employers. WHAT HAS CHANGED? Previously only P30’s, P45’s and end of Year P35(payroll summary) were filed with Revenue. The new system will require all payments to employees to be filed with Revenue in advance of making the actual payments. There will no longer be P30’s, P45’s or P35’s. IS THERE A TRANSITION PERIOD? No, Revenue will allow for the system to get fully operational and will accept genuine difficulties or shorty term issues which may occur early next year. IS PAYROLL SOFTWARE THE ANSWER? Payroll Software is already common place and it will undoubtable make it easier. Please note that registration with ROS is required for it to work correctly. ARE THERE ANY EXEMPTIONS FOR SMALL EMPLOYERS? Unfortunately, all employers are treated the same. The changes will impact small employers the most as they may not have the expertise to run payroll themselves. HOW OFTEN DO I HAVE TO FILE PAYROLL WITH REVENUE? Weekly 52 Times Fortnightly 26 Times Monthly 12 Times In addition, any payments outside normal payroll with have to be filed in advance with revenue. TIP Consider Monthly payroll as it should be cheapest option is you are outsourcing payroll.
