Location

Located in the waterfront next to the Navy Yard in Brooklyn, NYC. This social housing complex for artists stands between Kent Avenue and the Wall-about Channel of the East River, providing a connection to the waterfront and clear views to the south of Manhattan; By trying to extend the urban environment of Brooklyn into the site, a building on the southern-most end of the site is arranged into interlocking 2-bedroom apartments/lofts which extends to both ends of the building, allowing residents of each apartment to have views of the East River and also the interior of the Social Housing complex.

Understanding and looking at the city scale can inform the project on the types of construction around the city, connections around the city, commuting patterns, and more. Looking at green spaces around the site and taking into perspective time troughout the years and how these changes may affect the project in the near future.

Surrounding building programs

Researching and analizing programs throughout the neighborhood to understand what happens around the project site may lead to new decisions. Helping and making connections with adjacent buildings can help the local residents and at the same time the people living next to the site have a better living experience.

Site scale

Analizing the site scale consists of been aware of the adjacent buildings, connecting streets, ways of how people traffic the space, and more.

Locating the buildings on the site in a way that they create different type of spaces for human interaction within openings and enclosements all throughout the site for alternating types of activities such as artists performing, presentations, community gatherings, concerts and more.

Master Plan Three main buildings with different function and personality each one to sustain the artists living in them. The one being focused in this project is the southern-most facing building on the site which contains 30 apartments, gallery spaces and workshops. Adjacent to this building stands a retail building which connects the street into the site giving it a semi-public quality to the space.

Waterfront connection from Kent Avenue to adjacent building. Providing a public space for the residents and neighbors to interact.

Unit scale

The unit scale focuses on the destribution of the residents on the proposed building and at the way in which residents interact with one another on a daily basis within the building and also on the egress.

The proposed apartment building consists of 15 modular boxes which each one contains two overlapping apartments with a corridor in the middle of them, creating an apartment which expands from both faces of the building generating more access to views of Manhattan and the buildings in Kent Avenue.

Study focusing on the social interaction between apartments owners and how to show the idea of the modular overlapping apartments from the outside of the building.

Module M O D U L Eresidence RESIDENCE

Section trough proposed building on the southern-most space of the site which contains 30 2-bedroom modular apartments.

Perspective from the south looking at the closest part of the site to the interception of Kent Av. and Division Av. Kent Av. and the waterfront are connected by a 86’ long sloped path that continues laterally with the proposed building.
